2 churches catch fire in Maywood in less than 2 weeks

The first church caught fire a day after Christmas. The second bur ned four days later. And now, two cong re gations housed in historic church buildings in Maywood are working to rebuild amid what remains of their houses of worship.
At around 3 p.m., on Dec. 26, the New Life in Christ Bible Church, 1642 S. 15th Ave. in Maywood, caught fire, resulting
in major structural damage and a collapsed roof. No one was injured in the blaze, but the loss was widespread since the church was once home to the historic Rock of Ages Baptist Church before the me gachurch moved to its current Maywood location in 1995.
A week before Christmas, Rev. Ronald Beamon, the pastor of New Life In Christ Bible Church, 1642 S. 15th Ave. in Maywood, was bursting with pride. The sanctuary was decorated with Christmas trees and lights. And Beamon was reveling in some of the updates he’d recently implemented
“Two weeks before Christmas, I spent every day here,” Beamon said in an interview on Dec. 29. “We hadn’t cleaned the church in two years because of the pandemic. I was here repairing broken windows. We just bought an organ, a keyboard, brand new speakers — we even bought new Bibles over the last
year.”
Beamon said his cong re gation opted to worship on Dec. 17, allowing them to spend more time on Christmas Sunday with their families. Two weeks later, the facility in which New Life in Christ Bible Church had worshiped for 27 years was engulfed in flames.
Beamon said the fire was the biggest he’d seen in his life. The ordeal, he said, has been tough.
“This was pretty devastating,” he said. “It feels like somebody died. Right now, I’m just going through the stages of grief. I know you’re not supposed to love stuf f, but a house worship is different.”
There were no injuries and no surrounding properties sustained much, if any, damage, the Maywood Fire Department said.

Judge inva in so
Cook County was not par t of the lawsuit
By JERRY NOWICKI Capitol News Illinois
SPRINGFIELD – A Kankakee County judge ruled Dec 28 that lawmakers over reached their constitutional authority in passing a measure to abolish cash bail in Illinois, while other provisions in the wide-ranging SAFE-T Act criminal justice reform were not af fected by the ruling.
The ruling by Judge Thomas W. Cunnington leaves the impending cash bail reform in limbo in at least 64 of Illinois’ 102 counties that had joined the consolidated lawsuit ahead of the reform’s scheduled Jan. 1 implementation.
The reform remains scheduled to take ef fect in the more than 30 counties that did not sue, which contain roughly two-thirds of the state’s population. Of the state’s 10 most populous counties, six were not part of the lawsuit (Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, St. Clair and Champaign). The counties of Will, McHenry, Winnebago and Madison were all part of the lawsuit.
The ruling did not invalidate other provisions of the SAFE-T Act which had already taken ef fect, such as refor ms to police of ficer training and certification standards and police body camera requirements
Cunnington wrote in a 36-page decision that the cash bail provisions ef fectively and improperly amended a section of the state’s constitution that states, “all persons shall be bailable by suf ficient sureties,” except in a few specific circumstances
He also wrote that ending cash bail is an improper over reach by lawmakers, who have no constitutional authority to govern the administrative functions of Illinois courts due to the separation of powers. Bail, Cunnington wrote, has been held by the Supreme Court to be “administrative” in nature.
The constitution also specifically
Cunnington found that eliminating bail prevents courts from “ef fectuating the constitutionally mandated safety of the victims and their families.”
Illinois Attor ney General Kwame Raoul said in a news release the state will appeal the decision directly to the state Supreme Court, but a timeline for a ruling from the high court is unclear
“Most of the SAFE-T Act’s provisions have been in ef fect for more than a year, and re gardless of today’s circuit court decision, all parts of the SAFE-T Act, including the pretrial release portions addressed in the court’s decision, will
without having to pay cash bail will go into ef fect in a few short days, despite the court’s ruling against those provisions.”
Cunnington rejected other arguments by the dozens of state’s attor neys that centered on the le gislative process, namely that the bill was not given a proper hearing and violated the “single subject” rule Court precedent holds that as long as the House speaker and Senate president certify that a bill is properly passed, courts have no standing to intervene, he wrote.

an investigation, but they still say it’s inconclusive,” Beamon said. “They believe it was [caused by an electrical issue], but aren’t sure.”
Many people were devastated when word quickly spread about the fire on social media. Longtime cong re gants at Rock of Ages Baptist Church lamented the loss of a build where they for med many memories.
A day after the fire, Rev. Marvin Wiley, the pastor of Rock of Ages Baptist Church, told ABC 7 Chicago that he’d already reached out to Beamon in support
“The building means so much,” Wiley said. “It means so much. Pastor Beamon and his cong re gation bought it and we’re going to help them. Because they’re not going to be able to build here. Let’s be real. But we’re going to help them find somewhere they can car ry on their ministry.”
Beamon, who lives in Broadview, said on Dec 29 that his cong re gation planned to worship on Jan. 1 alongside the cong re gation at St. James Community Baptist Church, 2001 S. 15th Ave. in Broadview. And starting Jan. 8, Beamon said his cong re gation will worship at the Broadview Park District, 2600 S. 13th Ave., until the foreseeable future.
A few days after the fire, Beamon created a GoFundMe campaign that has, as of Dec 29, raised $760 of a $350,000 goal. The pastor said that the money will be used to help the church rebuild.
“We are hoping to rebuild here,” Beamon said. “I’ve been told we don’t have to stay here but I love the area so much, I’d like to see us rebuilding right here and hopefully have a new be ginning. I’ve met more neighbors over the last few days than in the 27 years we’ve been here. I would like to see God restore this building better than it’s ever been.”

Second church bur ns
In the early mor ning of Dec 30, the New Rock of Ages Baptist Church, 400 N. 5th Ave. in Maywood, caught fire, resulting in major damage. No one was injured in that fire, either
Before it was New Rock of Ages, the church was home to the First
Cong re gational Church of Maywood — which, before the church closed in 2020, was the village’s oldest existing cong re gation and had been around for nearly 150 years, making it older than the village itself.
First Cong re gational closed in the spring of 2020 due to the financial challenges of maintaining the historic house of worship. First Cong re gational was organized in 1871, the year of the Great Chicago Fire and a decade before Maywood was of ficially incor porated as a municipality At the time, Maywood’s founding fathers were billing the town as a leisurely escape from the g rit and g rime of the city. The four-story
Maywood Hotel, built in 1870, attracted guests among their day’s elite Most recently, the church had accommodated other churches and organizations who were temporarily displaced.
Rev. Curlie Anderson, the current pastor of New Rock of Ages, moved his church into the historic house of worship last year Anderson said the fire happened “downstairs in my fellowship hall,” adding that no one was in the building at the time and no injuries were re ported Anderson said the Maywood Fire Department and Cook County Sherif f’s of fice are investigating. He said he hasn’t
been told a possible cause The pastor, however, was aware that his church was the second Maywood church to catch fire in less than week.
“I know, I know,” he said, adding that he would wait for more information before speculating whether there’s a correlation between the two incidents.
Maywood Fire Department of ficials could not be reached for comment on Dec 30, which was this publication’s print deadline last week.

Student suspended, teacher fired a month after four teachers of color were threatened with termination for allegedly speaking out against Supt. James Henderson’s administration
By ANKUR SINGH & MICHAEL ROMAIN Contributing Reporter & Editor
Teachers, students and some board members are accusing Proviso Township District 209 Supt. James Henderson and his administration of intimidation after a student and teacher critical of Henderson suspended and minated,
about lear ning conditions in the school.
Stohl said some up to 50 students in af fected by what described as an exodus from D209 under Henderson October, Stohl founded Students for a Better during a Nov 15 board of four teachers of ter mination.
While the board teachers, three of serving a 20-day unpaid district for student that both the teachers – including Stohl Teachers Union has after their initial appeal denied.
At the Nov. 15 meeting, board President Della een “peanut actions Black
things,” have seen injustices towards students as far as their lear ning environments and resources, and the teachers have spoken up about getting better resources and environments for the children and have been disciplined for speaking up about that. Now, the children don’t know who to speak up to about it and when they see their teachers are speaking up about it and being disciplined, the children heavily support their teachers. The board is retaliating against teachers and now students.”
Mark and Ashley Stohl said they didn’t know that “peanut gallery,” a late 19th century Vaudeville-era ter m that refers to the cheapest and rowdiest seats in a theater, is also construed as having racial connotations due to Blacks being confined to that area of the theater.
, Hadala, up that she was being questioned without the presence of her father. She said she had to ask administrators to call her father. She said it was the second time she’d been questioned by HR without the school notifying her parents
“He’s previously interviewed me and a student after we found out he’s not supposed to question students without parental consent or a social worker,” Ashley said, referencing the process by which district administrators were attempting to find out if teachers helped students create posters criticizing Henderson and his administration, alle gations that led to the four teachers of color being threatened with ter mination.
Ashley Stohl, a student at Proviso West High School in Hillside, was suspended for five days for scribbling with an expo marker on the photos of D209 board members hanging in a school hallway, a charge that Stohl admitted to In an interview earlier this month, Stohl said she took the action out of frustration with some board members and their actions in the face of accumulating complaints from students and teachers
white.
“I only have three bags left,” Stohl said.
In an interview shortly after his daughter was suspended for five days, Mark Stohl said while he does not condone her actions, he believes the punishment is excessive and that the process by which Ashley was suspended was inappropriate and possibly ille gal.
“Everything up to now has stemmed from the way the board has been running
“She handed [the peanut bags] out to the people on the school board who are the rudest to her personally,” Mark Stohl said. “She handed one to Henderson because he’s the one who initiated the whole ‘peanut gallery’ thing. They’re invoking a double standard. I raised my children right. She doesn’t have a racial bone in her body and to her, she didn’t know this was a racial thing, yet she’s being targeted by the school board president as racist.”
Stohl said that she was suspended on Dec 11, even though she scribbled on the photo on Nov. 17. Stohl said that during the disciplinary meeting, the district’s
“After that [first] meeting, Scott fabricated an entire story about how we gave him teacher names so those teachers could be put up for ter mination. None of the teachers were actually behind any of that.”
Mark Stohl said he paid for the poster board and markers, adding that the teachers “were an inspiration not instigators. You would think that smart administrators would love to have teachers respected by students.”
Ashley and Mark Stohl said Henderson himself showed up to the disciplinary hearing that preceded Ashley’s five-day suspension.
“It’s a rarity for [Henderson] to show up

at West,” Mark Stohl said. “They initially told us she would be suspended for two to three days. Ashley called me to say she had been called back into the principal’s of fice and as she was waiting there, Henderson walked into the room where she was going into As he left, he looked at Ashley and had a smirk on his face And when I got to the school, we were told she’d be suspended for five days. It was a very strange coincidence.”
During her public comments at the Nov. 15 board meeting, teacher Jennifer LaBash said that “we’re digging up your skeletons and we’re going to find them your tax liens and other stuf f you’re doing and Jimmie, we’ ll find yours.”
“You’re not going to disrespect that Black man!” Patterson interjected, before urging security guards to escort LaBash out of the room. Roughly a month later, she was ter minated.
At the Dec 13 board meeting, where members voted for LaBash’s ter mination, many students, teachers, and parents accused the district of disciplining LaBash and Stohl out of retaliation for criticizing the district on how it manages its funds and treats teachers.
“We have asked the board and Superintendent Henderson time and ag ain to work with us, through the process in our contract, to settle g rievances and handle personnel issues as they arise Every time, we’re ignored. Our goal is to establish a collaborative relationship with district leadership to solve these issues,” said Proviso Teachers Union President John Wardisiani in a statement. “We will continue to stand up and fight for our students and the educators who serve them.”
During the open comment period nearly all the testimonies from teachers, students, and parents were critical of the district for their response during the November board meeting.
“Although I do not fully condone Ashley’s actions, I do not believe that this small of fense would war rant such a large punishment,” said Max Olszta, a student at Proviso West High School and a member of Students for a Better Proviso. “
Olszta also claimed the district’s actions violated Illinois Senate Bill 100, which states that “out-of-school suspensions of longer than three days, expulsions, and disciplinary removals to alter native schools may be used only if other appropriate and available behavioral and disciplinary interventions have been exhausted.”
Olszta, Mark Stohl and Ashley Stohl said that no other interventions were made prior to Stohl being suspended.
Micaela Soto, a teacher at Proviso East High School in Maywood, told the board she loves the district and is very invested in it. She graduated from Proviso East and her own children currently attend school in the district.
“We’re teachers and when it comes to our students, we will defend them vigorously,” Soto told the board. “Ms. Jenny LaBash, I love her She is amazing and just because you all have a personal vendetta against her, she should not be ter minated.”
Soto also accused the district of violating the collective bargaining ag reement made with the teacher’s union for not paying several teachers.
“We also have cases of teachers who have gone above and beyond to attempt to fill the gaps in our district. They’ve taken
on supervisory roles and covered extra classes, and while our contract outlines a process for compensating teachers for this extra work, District 209 has failed to pay them,” PTU President Wardisiani said in a statement.
Multiple board members criticized the D209 administration for allowing an HR of ficer to question Stohl.
“We need to be very, very careful that we are not violating SB 100 and giving five-day, out-of-school suspensions for of fenses that have not gone through any kind of disciplinary chain,” said board member Amanda Grant. “Any student who is disciplined should be meeting with counselors I also feel that it is incredibly inappropriate to have the director of HR be inter rogating students. This has happened a few times now … that is not what he’s here for. We have counselors, teachers, interventionists and social workers for our students and we need to be utilizing them.”
Grant also noted that the district was applying a double standard by chastising Stohl for playing on the ter m “peanut gallery” when Henderson has used the ter m publicly several times to castigate those critical of his administration. She also lambasted the superintendent for what she called his retaliatory attacks on teachers and students
“It just tur ns my stomach,” she said. “Dr Henderson, you need to resign. This is not working. I can’t think of a single good thing that’s happened in the past two years … We were assured you knew how to communicate, work with dif ferent groups, support teachers. We see none of that … We are losing teachers. We are hemor rhaging teachers and staf f These are good teachers How is this student-
centered, student-focused? It’s not.”
Board member Sam Valtier re z urged students under 18 to call their parents and go to a counselor if they get in trouble.
“For the record, Mr Valtier re z, the parent was present,” Henderson said, referencing Stohl’s second disciplinary hearing. The superintendent, however, did not address Ashley Stohl’s and Mark Stohl’s claims that Mark was not present for the first inter rogation earlier this year and that she had to call her father herself for the disciplinary meeting she had in December
The Stohls also questioned why it took nearly a month for administrators to discipline her for defacing property Stohl said she believes the action was taken a month later so her out-of-school suspension would prohibit her from attending the Dec. 13 board meeting.
Henderson re gularly declines requests for comment and district of ficials indicated at the Dec 13 meeting that they cannot disclose too many details of Stohl’s disciplinary action due to privacy and policy concer ns
At the Dec. 13 meeting, President Patterson said that “with students, we have to be extremely careful if we don’t know all of the facts. I’m not going to [identify the student’s name]. I am aware of what took place Technically, this could have been worse than what actually took place for a particular student. There are certain activities you cannot participate in. I’m going to leave that there.”
The next board meeting will be held Jan. 10 at Proviso West High School in Hillside.

Proviso teachers’ strike, Maywood mayor DUI, supercell storm among biggest headlines in 2022
By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
As we head into 2023, we’ve rounded up some of the biggest stories that Village Free Press has reported on. Most of the stories we chose had some resonance beyond our Proviso Township coverage area and/or had a significant impact on a particular suburb in our nine-suburb target market.
Proviso teachers strike
In our opinion, the biggest story of 2022 was the Proviso Township High School District 209 teachers’ strike, the first in two decades and perhaps the longest in the district’s history. The strike began
Our biggest stories of 2022
on March 4 and ended only after the Proviso Teachers Union (PTU) Local 571 and District 209 Superintendent James Henderson reached a tentative contract ag reement on March 23. Students returned to classes on March 28.
Maywood mayor’s ar rest, governing woes
If 2021 marked a year of beginnings in Maywood — with the election of Mayor Nathaniel George Booker and, based on the new mayor’s strong recommendation, the hiring of his handpicked village manager, Chasity Wells-Armstrong — 2022 marked the year of discord. By July, after months of tension with the mayor, WellsArmstrong would be terminated after a damaging report alle ged she created a hostile workplace at Village Hall.
If the saga between the mayo manager weren’t explosive enough, Ma Booker’s arrest in May by Chicago who found him asleep at the wheel on the Kennedy Expressway, put the village
an even more intense spotlight, with the ar rest making headlines for virtually every major local media news outright and causing a wave of chatter on social media.
Westchester’s surprise
In 2022, Westchester also experienced some major governing pains. In April, the village’s manager, Paul Noses, abruptly resigned. That same month, the board was shocked to discover that what they thought would be a major move from their Village Hall on Roosevelt Road to their new digs on Enterprise Drive was anything but. The two Enterprise Drive buildings were empty, leaving village board members scratching their heads and resolved to strengthen oversight.
Climate change gets real with supercell storm, C4 creation
The supercell storm that ravaged most of Proviso Township on June 13 — causing power outages that lasted for several days in some places like Broadview and Westchester, and significant structural damage, including a collapsed apartment roof in Bellwood — may have been the most forceful evidence in decades that climate change and the weird and extreme weather events accompanying it are more than theoretical.
The storm’s impact still resonated on June 23, when west suburban mayors from more than a dozen municipalities gathered at Triton Colle ge to announce the creation of the Cross-Community Climate Collaborative (C4), which puts participating suburbs on the hook for reduction in greenhouse 2050.

Bellwood boil order instituted, then lifted over holidays
Multiple media outlets are reporting a boil order that had been in place for Bellwood residents since Christmas Eve was lifted on Dec. 27. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cleared the village to lift the boil order on Tuesday.
“I know I can continue to go through the process of where I could be able to make sure I can bathe my son, make sure I can wash my face,” Bellwood resident Tasha Taylor told CBS 2 news.
“That mechanical failure, coupled with the water main breaks brought our pressure, PSI under 20. So anytime your pressure falls under 20, you have to have a boil order, and get your water tested,” Harvey told CBS 2.
team came in third place in the 61st Annual Proviso West Boys Holiday Basketball Invitational, held Dec. 26 through Dec. 29 at Proviso West’s main gymnasium in Hillside.
The Pirates beat St. Rita 66-61 in overtime on Dec. 29 to capture the thirdplace prize. The victory came after a 7850 loss to Kenwood on Dec. 28. A win over Kenwood would have put the Pirates in the tournament championship.
Kenwood would eventually lose a close game to Whitney Young in the championship 58-55. The clash between the two teams was a rematch oflast year’s championship game, which Young lost. Young has won the West Holiday tournament six times. The last time they won it all was in 2016, tournament officials said.
The host team, Proviso West, lost in the tournament’s opening round 63-67 to Lincoln Park on Dec. 26 before defeating Bowman 75-50 on Dec. 27.
Whitney Young’s Daniel Johnson won Tournament MVP. Johnson led Young’s offense with 16 points in the championship game.
Two Proviso Township athletes were included in the Second Team AllTournament Team: Rajan Roberts of Proviso West and Bryce Coleman of Proviso East.

The lifted order was also a reliefto Mickey Sangiacomo, the owner of Mickey’s Drive-In, 635 Mannheim Rd. in Bellwood.
“We boil everything as far as water that we use in our steam tables and things like that,” Sangiacomo told ABC 7. “We serve no soft drinks out ofour fountain drinks. We had to go out and get canned pop today.”
Bellwood woman fatally shot in Chicago found inside parked car in Maywood
According to multiple news reports, a woman was reportedly shot to death in Chicago over the weekend and found in a car parked in Maywood.
CBS News reported that the woman was shot in Chicago’s West Garfield Park community on Sunday night, according to Chicago police.
The medical examiner’s office identified the woman as Alexis Wesley, a 29-year-old Bellwood resident.
Wesley was reportedly found on Dec. 26 with a gunshot wound to the head. The parked car was located on the 1200 block of St. Charles Rd. in Maywood. The shooting happened on Sunday evening.
