Tension rises as Amazon delays opening West Side warehouse

Giant facility on Division will open in 2023 is latest promise

For the past several months residents of Chicago’s West Side have driven and walked past a massive 140,000 square foot warehouse on the corner of Division and Kostner wondering when the Amazon facility would open and begin offering employment to folks in the neighborhood.

When the project was first announced in 2021, Amazon promised that the warehouse would open in 2022 and create nearly 500 jobs. However, that deadline has come and passed as the building sits in a federal economic opportunity zone that makes it eligible for tax breaks. The project has been supported by Alderperson Emma Mitts, whose 37th Ward includes the warehouse.

On Thursday, Jan. 19 community members with groups like Black Workers Matter, Get To Work, Teamsters, and Chicago mayoral candidate Brandon Johnson gathered in front of the building demanding answers to the

Manoj Prasad says he’s committed to making two hospitals work

A month and a half after Resilience Healthcare took over operations of West Suburban Medical Center and Weiss Memorial Hospital, CEO Manoj Prasad says they are committed to revitalizing the two hospitals.

“I’m of the belief that there should be no hospital in our country getting shut down because of financial reasons,” Prasad said.

West Suburban, considered a safetynet hospital, and Weiss, which is one

step above safety-net status, have been beleaguered by financial problems in recent years, with the hospitals’ previous owner, Pipeline Health, filing for bankruptcy this past October.

The bankruptcy filing was among a series of delays that extended the transition of ownership from Pipeline, which announced it had found a buyer in Resilience last March. The transaction was valued at $92 million with a refund of $12 million going back into the hospitals.

“A lot of people were under the impression that in the bankruptcy, we got [the hospitals] for a song,” Prasad said.

Resilience paid the full $92 million, according to Prasad, acquiring all the hospitals’ real estate, including their offsite campuses, but also their debts —

to the tune of roughly $81 million.

“It’s $81 million and counting,” said Prasad. “There’s still some debt being transfer red.”

Prasad and his financial partner, Rathnakar R. Patlola, took on the burden of that debt and did so without a lender secured. They’re in the process of looking for lenders, and state funding will be critical in allowing the hospitals to continue caring for patients. While the debt is large, they don’t view the hospitals as a bad investment. They believe it would have been bad not to invest in them.

“What was the other option? These two would be shut down,” he said. “We don’t need more closed-down hospitals.”

Prasad is committed enough to the two hospitals that he and his family

HOW TO REACH US

Proviso Township, Forest Park to host mental health expo

Organizers hope to connec t residents with resources, reduce mental health stigma

The Proviso Township Mental Health Commission will work with the village of Forest Park to bring together west suburban mental health and social service providers for a mental health expo tentatively scheduled to take place May 6 at Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd., Forest Park.

The goal of the fair is to let w suburban residents lear n about resources that are already available in their communities The organizers also hope to do their part to ease stigma around mental health issues and encourage people to see it as they would any other health issues. They are still looking for vendors, but they hope to attract as many organizations possible to cover as many demographics as possible

Maria Maxham, Forest Park commissioner of public health and safety, said the fair grew out discussions she had with Public Health & Safety Director Steve Glinke and Mohr Community Center Director Karen Dylewski. Forest Park doesn’t have mental health department, nor does have the resources to set up one, but was still something that af fected the area. For example, Glinke’s department had respond to hoarders who passed away individuals dealing with mental health issues often go to the community center.

Maxham said the three of ficials reached out to the Oak Park Township Community Mental Health Board for advice and of ficials there suggested they reach out to the Proviso Township Mental Health Commission.

The Proviso commission uses its own property tax levy to provide assistance to the social service nonprofits throughout Proviso Township. It also shares

infor mation about those raises awareness about issues in the community substance abuse

Maxham said that, she didn’t realize the existed.

“I don’t know if, historicall has had a really good the Proviso Township Commission,” she probably never reached out to them.

The trio, along with Administrator Moses Rachell Entler, the Fo

what’s already there, so both can have a list they can use to refer residents in need

“We’re putting together a list of local resources for people who are struggling with mental health issues, food insecurity, housing insecurity and substance abuse,” Maxham said. “We’re going to publish the list on our website and put together a pamphlet.”

She said they want to make sure the resources would work for a wide variety of groups, including youth, veterans, seniors and LGBTQ+ individuals

Forest Park and the Proviso commission also ag reed to do a mental health expo to bring those providers together in one place and let residents see what they of fer. Maxham said that, while there has been some progress in destigmatizing mental illness, it’s still something that has to be addressed.

“I think we have a long way to go, and for people to understand that it’s OK to ask for help, and not look at it as a bad thing, and to sort of have grace when talking about the issue,” she said. “We mentioned that we want to do this health care with PMHC, and they said they’d be happy to work with us.”

Since May is Mental Health Awareness month, Maxham said, it made sense to schedule it early in the month. She said they hope to get people not just from Forest Park and other Proviso Township municipalities, but from Oak Park, River Forest and other “neighboring communities.”

Maxham said that they are still looking for vendors. Anyone interested in participating should reach out to Entler at rentler@forestpark.net.

Actor turned comedian lookin to open comedy club on Street

Emily Ramirez launching comedy open mic to spread the word about club, give oppor tunities for local comedians

A for mer ballerina and actress tur ned comedian (who also does home renovation on the side) is looking to open a comedy club on the Madison Street commercial cor ridor.

Emily Ramire z, of Berwyn, said that comedy has always been her passion, and she wanted to create a safe environment where perfor mers have financial guarantees and protections that are often lacking in the stand-up world. She already runs the BAPS Comedy Club organization, which holds public and corporate comedy events throughout the Chicago area. Now, Ramirez wants to open an actual comedy club, and she said she specifically wants to open it on Madison Street because she fell in love with the cor ridor since she first saw it while walking around town with her husband.

Ramirez is still in the process of buying a location, and she plans to secure a liquor license before opening it. In the meantime, she is launching a monthly comedy open mic series at Kribi Coffee’s Forest Park location, 7324 Madison St., which will take place every first Tuesday of the month from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The series will kick of f on March 7, and Ramire z said she wants to use it to not only introduce Forest Park to her brand but give local comics an opportunity to perfor m without having to travel to downtown Chicago and furtherflung suburbs. She said she wanted it to be an event where some topics may touch a nerve, but where perfor mers and audience members would ultimately feel safe and comfortable

Ramirez was a ballerina for 10 years

before transitioning to musical theater something was missing. She has al been interested in stand-up comedy, she decided to take sketch comedy writing classes from the Second City comedy club

“When I was lear ning about writing just really fell in love with it,” she said. That led to Ramire z trying her hand perfor ming sketch comedy.

“I did stand-up while on tour for Phantom of the Opera,” she said. “It wasn something where I thought – oh, going to be great at it. But I was like only going to be in each of those cities two weeks. If I bomb, they’d never see again.”

When Ramirez retur ned to the Chicago area, she went into comedy full-time, writing sketches, taking more classes and perfor ming. But as time went on, she realized that, while ballerinas and actors had union contracts that provided some guarantees and protections for perfor mers, nothing like that existed in sketch comedy.

“I want to bring some of that polish into the comedy world,” she said. “There are amazing comedians in Chicago, but there’s a crazy amount of hustling for them to succeed.”

Ramirez also wanted to create a space where female comics wouldn’t face harassment and even assault.

In 2020, she launched That Time of the Month, a monthly comedy show featuring “women and female-identifying perfor mers.”

“I always paid them, and part of the proceeds always went to Sarah’s Circle [women’s homeless services organization],” Ramirez said. “I believe artists should be paid for their work.”

That evolved into the BABS (short for Bad-Ass Bitches – a reference to a Saturday Night Live sketch), which continued to put on That Time of the Month and other comedy events, as well as private corporate events

BABS perfor mers rehearse – something that, Ramirez said, was unheard of in the comedy world. Ramire z drew upon friends and contacts she made over the

knew exactly where she wanted to open it.

“I was like -- I love this street,” Ramire z said. “It was such a fun, mixed community, which is so nice for a comedy club.”

She said she enjoyed the thought of having people from dif ferent backgrounds and dif ferent tastes come together and bond over comedy.

“For people like me, who are comedians, who move here and who want to do comedy and not want to live downtown, it gives me my place to do my thing and other people to do their thing.” Ramirez said the club will serve alcohol – as she saw it, a sober comedy club “is a business model that doesn’t work that well.” The staf f will be professionally trained on how to de-escalate dangerous situations.

“The kind of comedy that we do -- we can get blue and racy, but it can be familyfriendly too, and, depending on where in the week it is, we can cater to different crowds,” Ramire z said.

She said that she is currently considering two possible sites on the street.

In the meantime, Ramire z is launching the Highly Laf finated [sic] Standup Open Mic to both introduce herself to the community and to give comics in the area an opportunity to practice and refine their craft.

“I’ve been trying to gently introduce myself to the area and just kind of ease them into bringing something fun on their block,” she said.

Abbey Brumfield, Kribi’s director of

operations, says they have been looking to host events in the downstairs lounge, which many people don’t realize even exists

“We were all completely on board with [the open mic],” she said, adding that she loved the name “We weren’ t wor ried about the money aspect -- we just wanted a community space. Building the community is one of our biggest missions at Kribi Cof fee. The community really helped us get through [the pandemic], so we wanted to really be able to reach out and support it.”

The lounge can seat up to 35 people, which, Brumfield said, suited everyone just fine, given the atmosphere Ramire z is aiming for.

Ramirez said she wouldn’t apply the kind of screening she would have at BABS events, because she wanted it to be open to anyone interested in comedy. But she said that she planned to set the tone before every show.

“I can’t speak to any ability or experience to those people, you might hear something of fensive to you, but it’s a free country,” she said. “We’re just here to practice.”

Ramirez would encourage perfor mers to stay after and talk to each other.

“I encourage people to stay after and talk about their sets, and lear n from each other,” she said. “People, a lot of them, describe the stand-up world as this dogeat-dog place. It doesn’t need to be You’re going to succeed if you’re good, and that’s it.”

New D94 board appointee running for full term in April

Monica Arango looks to give voice to district’s Hispanic families

Monica Arango has always been passionate about education. She majored in elementary education and psychology at Aurora University. But after student teaching she decided that being a teacher wasn’t the right career choice for her After college she spent two years serving in AmeriCorps, often working with young people, and after that she worked in colle ge admissions and financial aid. When she moved to North Riverside from the North Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago in 2021, Arango quickly joined the Komarek School PTA.

In December, she filed to run for a seat the Komarek District 94 school board and on Jan. 10 Arango was appointed to that board to fill the vacancy created by the death of Brian Jicha in November.

“I can have a voice in a small community,” Arango said of her desire to be on the school board. “Being that I come from a huge community where you’re kind of a small fish in a large pond, this gives you an opportunity to be like a big fish in a small pond and have the opportunity to have a voice in my community.”

Current Komarek School board member Melissa Obrock, who knew Arango from

their days as graduate students in Loyola University’s master’s program in higher education, suggested that Arango run for the school board.

“It looks like I’m walking into a board that’s very well run,” Arango said. “I’m really excited to work with the school board.”

Arango is bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English, which is an advantage since nearly 53 percent of Komarek students are Hispanic. Arango is the only Hispanic member of the District 94 school board.

“Because I am bilingual and because I have the ability to communicate with people that others may not be able to, it absolutely is an advantage and an opportunity to bring in those voices of people who may not necessarily always be heard,” Arango said.

Arango, 45, works as a rating service veterans representative for the U.S. Department of Veterans Af fairs

“I make decisions based on disability claims for veterans,” Arango said.

She has two sons who are Komarek students, a sixth grader and a second grader.

When she was in colle ge, Arango founded a chapter of the Gamma Phi Ome ga sorority, a sorority that was founded for Latinas. She believes that and other leadership experiences will help her on the school board.

“I am the type of person who, if you need something, I’ll go out of my way to help you find it,” Arango said.

Arango was the only person who applied to fill the vacancy created when Jicha died. She and Chris Waas, the longtime president of the Komarek District 94 school board, were the only candidates to file for the April election when three seats are up on the school board.

After the election, unless someone files to run as a write-in, the school board will have to appoint someone to fill the final remaining seat on the board. Susan Bogdan, who has served on the Komarek District 94 Board of Education since 2014, did not file to run for another term.

moved to River Forest from Michigan. When his daughter was in need of medical care, he took her to West Suburban’s River Forest campus, which he plans to make an “inte gral part” of the Resilience system.

“If I don’t have the confidence that my family can get good care here, I have no business asking others to come and trust their health care to us,” he said.

Cur rently, he splits his time between West Suburban in Oak Park and Weiss in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, serving as group CEO He spends most of his days meeting with the hospitals’ caregivers to understand what can be done to make their work easier

Prasad’s goal is uniting the hospitals into one group that operates out of two primary locations. West Sub’s for mer CEO, Barbara Martin, left the hospital the day Resilience took over, according to Prasad. Irene Dumanis remains CEO of Weiss but is now also the chief financial of ficer of both hospitals

Before Prasad, West Suburban’s chief medical of ficers had never met their Weiss counter parts. Now the teams are working in concert with each other, eliminating the silos that once divided them.

“The collaboration is giving such beautiful results,” he said. “It’s very heartwar ming.”

Resilience allo employ the

to switch over full-time to the Chicago hospital, drastically cutting down her commute to work.

When Resilience took over operations of West Suburban and Weiss on Dec 2, Prasad hosted townhall meetings at both hospitals, hitting every shift to ensure that employees were given the chance to provide input and to hear directly from their new leader. In the days since, he said, everyone has come together to support one another.

It hasn’t been free of obstacles, however For two full weeks, West Suburban was without a phar macy license and could not buy drugs. The situation could have had fatal consequences had it not been for nearby hospitals sharing their supplies.

“I have to put on the record how gracious all the sur rounding hospitals have been,” Prasad said, adding that he wants to continue working with them to prove the best possible care to the communities they serve. He has already proposed new joint programs and is discussing them with the leadership of other hospitals

Prasad said he does not stress about the futures of Weiss and West Suburban because they are staf fed by great people who share his desire to see the two hospitals succeed.

“These are going to be community hospitals that will provide care to the community as per their needs — personal care,” he said.

West Suburban has seen a revolving door of owners within the last decade. Prasad said he was told unnamed local leaders had a bet that Resilience wouldn’t last 15

Activists also claim the company has a burdensome application process that makes it dif ficult for locals to even apply for jobs at sur rounding warehouses in places like Cicero and Melrose Park According to them all interviews are conducted in Skokie, which makes it dif ficult for West Side residents to even complete the application process due to the distance.

In a statement to ABC7 Ald. Mitts said she “continues to be staunchly supportiv of the for thcoming Amazon facility Rest assured that this Amazon distribution center is scheduled to open during 2023.”

Local residents have called on the company to sign a community benefits ag reement, but the company has refused.
