Local artist Aaron Canino champions Proviso architecture and design

While studying algebra and geometry at Triton Colle ge to become an architect Aaron Canino realized he needed to pivot from making buildings to making art of buildings, roads, and the spaces that he called home.

Raised in Hillside, he has fond memories of his art classes taught by Ms. Zeman at Hillside District 93, but it was his junior and senior year at Proviso West that had the greatest impact on his live. “My Art 1 and 2 classes taught by Jerry Jenkins introduced me to the basics of perspective and I was like, wow, I can do this. Mr. Jenkin’s not only encouraged me, he pushed me to practice more and challenged me to show my art at an art show we had at West.”

101-year-old Austin residen ‘virtual’ guest of Cong. Davis at State of the Union

Longtime Austin resident Lillian Drummond was a “vir tual” guest of Cong. Danny K. Davis at last week’s State of the Union address

Although Drummond, a co-founder of the South Austin Coalition Community Council (SACCC), was not able to travel to Washington, D.C., to attend President Joe Biden’s annual address in person, she took par t over Zoom instead. She may be the oldest State of the Union guest in U.S. history

Drummond has distinguished herself as a community activist in many battles for justice. She was active and working into her 90s, advocating for social causes like utility reform.

“I have known Mrs. Drummond for more than three decades, working on the battlefield,” Davis said in a statement. “As a member of the Committee of Ways and Means with oversight over Social Security, it is my honor to invite her to participate in the State of the Union to hear how under President Joe Biden’s leadership, Democrats will always defend Social Security and Medicare.”

Nichole’s Love Sandwich

Valentine’s Week is here and I am always looking for ways to show my family I love them. A constant way of my love is through food. Tasting my food gives them love in every bite. Have you ever made a sandwich but your mom makes one that looks and tastes so much better? That’s because she adds a sprinkle of love

This sandwich was originally created by Karen Dudley. Oprah even has her own version. Well I have my own version also. My youngest tells me I’m the best sandwich maker in the entire world. What an honor!

You have to star t of f with good bread. I prefer a sturdy roll, ar tisanal, or five grain bread. And this love sandwich calls for meat from the deli, not out of the package. And of course the other great toppings.

Honey Ham

Thick Cut Bacon (Cooked of course)

Pe pper Jack Cheese

Romaine

Alfalfa Sprouts

Thinly Sliced Red Onion

Thinly sliced tomato

Lemon aioli (recipe on my blog)

Star t of f by toasting your bread

Lettuce on the bottom

Place at least 3 slices of each meat on sandwich. I like to fold mine in half Add your bacon. Break in half if needed. Top with pe pper jack cheese. Add red onion and tomatoes. On top add sprouts. Salt and pe pper to taste. Drizzle lemon aioli on top. Add top layer of bread. Cut in half. I like to enjoy this sandwich with homemade potato chips and ice-cold ginger tea.
