Fired Proviso teacher speaks up for students from board podium

‘You are wor th the struggle,’ says teacher

A teary-eyed Jennifer LaBash stood at the podium during the public comment session at the Feb. 14 Proviso Township High Schools board meeting to express her love to her former students on that Valentine’s Day. LaBash is a teacher who was fired by the district late last year after she spoke at the October board meeting and accused the board of mismanaging funds.

“I wanted to remind my freshman that roaming the hallways, you know who you are 7th period, during class time is not a good idea,” LaBash said to the board. “You don’t want to have to go to summer school. ... I know that things are stressful and you’re holding it together the best you can. Please keep trying.”

LaBash also reminded her colle ge bound seniors to check they have all the credits needed to graduate and to look for scholarships. She urged her students pursuing a career in the trades that several local unions have opportu-

Activists push Amazon for quick open of West Side warehouse

Small signs of headway on opening but no guarantee

On Valentine’s Day a group of West Side residents and elected of ficials including Representative Delia Ramirez, State Representative and Chicago mayoral candidate Kam Buckner, and others gathered on the cor ner of Division and Kostner to show their love for their neighbors and called for more jobs in West Humboldt Park

“Love is a two way thing,” said Anthony Stewart, a member of Black Workers Matter “It can’t just be one side giving and the other side taking. Amazon may be big, but it still needs to be held responsible.”

The Amazon warehouse they were standing in front of had been sitting vacant for the past several months with little to no employees present. However, over the past two weeks construction crews have been seen outside the premises with renewed activity. This comes after community groups in the neighborhood such as Black Workers Matter, Get To Work, the Teamsters, and more called on both Amazon and Alderperson Emma Mitts for more transparency around when the warehouse would open and how many loal jobs would be created

nounced in September 2021, Amazon had said the warehouse would open by the end of 2022. However the date came and went and instead of jobs, the only thing the surrounding community got was an empty warehouse that sat in a federal economic opportunity zone collecting tax breaks.

Activists accused the company of not following through on its promises of creating 500 jobs, with 50 of those jobs being promised icipants of Get To Work’s ich assists West Side residents find work community groups press conference in the warehouse on publicly raised re garding its dey they’ve seen grow to get the open sooner.

sign was given by from Mitts to after the January conference where esidents could “rest that the facilopen in 2023 and supported jobs for local residents

Another indication that

the warehouse may be opening were sights of construction crews and other personnel engaging in various activities at the warehouse

However, West Side activists aren’t taking these signs for granted and are asking for commitments from Amazon in writing. In a letter sent to Mitts on Jan. 26, Black Workers Matter and Get To Work asked her to urge Amazon to commit to opening the facility in 2023, provide the 500 jobs originally promised with 50 percent of the workforce to be West Side residents, and to honor its promise of collaborating with Get To Work to hire a minimum of 50 of their clients

They haven’t heard back yet.

“We didn’t get anything. No response,” said Yvette McCallum, a member of Black Workers Matter. “There’s been reactions, we have a little more sweet talk flirting. But nobody has shown enough respect to tell us, direct or indirect, what’s going on.”

“Amazon has continually indicated that it is scheduled to open here during 2023 and will institute local community hiring opportunities,” Alderperson Mitts said in a statement.

Amazon did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Iraqi vet and Housing Forward board member blends homeless concerns

Sleep Out 4 Change raises money, awareness of vets without housing

The temperature was forecast to hit a low of 19 de grees on Feb. 17 in Forest Park, but Housing Forward board member Erich Krumrei was enthusi astic about sleeping outside in a card board box to raise money and awareness of homelessness issues

The Iraqi war veteran noted before the event, “I’ve been watching the weather very closely. The colder the better The idea is to get out there in the elements and suf fer a little so you have a bit of an idea of what people go through when they don’t have home.”

Krumrei, who lives in Oak Park and owns Play it Again Sports in Forest Park, notes he was inspired by Gimme Shelter, an event hosted by Peoria based Phoenix Development Services to raise awareness of the challenges faced by community members without homes. Participants pay for the privilege of spending the night in a cardboard box in order to raise funds to help combat homelessness

As a board member with Housing Forward, the Maywood-based non-profit, Krumrei decided to bring a similar event to the near-west suburbs and says the event is a way to support his passion for ending homelessness, especially veteran homelessness.

Branding his inaugural ef fort Sleep Out 4 Change, Krumrei challenged others to join him in sleeping outside to raise awareness about homelessness, and also launched a fundraiser at: Sleep Out 4 Change (clickandpledge.com)

The National Alliance to End Homelessness estimated in 2020 that over 37,000 veterans were homeless in the United States That number hits close to home for Krumrei

As a third-generation veteran -- his grandfather served in World War II, his

father in Vietnam, and Krumrei in Iraq -he is particularly in tune with the needs of veterans. He says, “There’s a whole lot of issues that ef fect veterans when they come back from overseas Housing shouldn’t be one of them.”

On Feb. 17, Krumrei was joined by a few others willing to brave the elements, including Maria Maxham. Maxham is a volunteer for Housing Forward, and through her work as a village commissioner in Forest Park she is currently engaging with the mayor’s of fice and the Community Center to add a focus on mental health and social services to the department’s work

She says, “When Erich told me about the Sleep Out 4 Change initiative, I was immediately interested because I love the work Housing Forward is doing. It’s a project that will raise money for and awareness of a very important issue.”

Krumrei hopes to expand this ef fort into an annual event with multiple people sleeping outside for pledges, with cor porate sponsors This year, the village

of Forest Park and Mayor Rory Hoskins of fered support, and Grand Appliance on Madison Street in Forest Park donated refrigerator boxes to the effort Housing Forward Executive Director Lynda Schueler kicked of f the evening with a brief speech, acknowledging Krumrei’s ef for ts that help shine the spotlight on homeless veterans. His effor ts dovetail with Housing Forward’s Victory’s Path program, which provides support to veterans, helping them obtain housing as they work towards paying for their own housing as an inde pendent community member

Erik Johnson, development chief at Housing Forward, praised Krumrei’s ef forts. “He is a new board member for Housing Forward and just really wanted to roll up his sleeves and do something that crossed ground with his personal experience and his board experience.”

As of Monday, Feb. 20, Sleep Out 4 Change has raised over $7,700 and Housing Forward continues to accept donations

Brookfield Zoo mourns death of orangutan

On the heels of the good news last week that it had acquired a new silverback for its wester n lowland gorilla group, Brookfield Zoo on Feb. 13 shared the sad news that its 44-year-old Bor nean orangutan, Ben, was euthanized due to his deteriorating health characterized by “severe arthritis and spinal degeneration.”

At 44 years old, Ben was a geriatric orangutan who had experienced a series of health issues in recent years as he aged. In 2018, he underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix and was diagnosed with heart disease, which had been treated for more than a decade with medication.

Ben’s quality of life, however, increasingly suffered due to the arthritis and spinal degeneration, which required medication to treat the pain. The decision to euthanize Ben came when veterinary staff could no longer keep Ben comfortable. His condition ruled out surgery, according to a press release from the zoo. He was euthanized Feb. 12.

“Ben was such a gentle ape and an incredible father. He could often be seen interacting and playing with his offspring,” said Tim

Snyder, vice president of animal care, in the press release “Additionally, he had a very trusting relationship with his animal care specialists, and voluntarily participated in training sessions and his own health care. He will be greatly missed by the staff and the millions of guests who visited him.”

According to the press release, at the time of his death Ben was the second-oldest Bornean orangutan in an accredited zoo in North America. He arrived at Brookfield Zoo in 1992 on a breeding recommendation, and that recommendation tur ned out to be fruitful.

With his mate, Sophia, Ben sired four offspring, including Kekasih and Heidi, who still live at Tropic World: Africa. Ben also has four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Proviso East track star Greg Foster dies

Hurdler won a silver medal at 1984 Olympics

Greg Foster, for mer Proviso Pirate and UCLA Hall of Fame champion hurdler, 1984 silver medalist, and three-time world champion, died at the age of 64 according to UCLA track and field and NBC sports. Foster underwent emergency heart

transplant surgery in 2020 after being diagnosed with a rare condition, Amyloidosis. Miraculously, just five weeks after the surgery, he was standing at the track invitational named for him, as re ported in the Village Free Press.

According to NBC Sports, Foster won six national 110m hurdles, gold at three world outdoor championships, and the Olympic silver medal in the 1984 games, held in Los Angeles.

Foster tried out for the Proviso East basketball team his freshman year and made

the first two cuts but ultimately didn’t make the team. At a friend’s suggestion, he gave track and field a try, and hit his stride in hurdling.

Foster would return annually to his alma mater’s track invitational. The Proviso East Greg Foster Invitational was held this past Saturday with 18 high schools re presented from across the state.

The grandstands were full and the West indoor track was filled with athletes from across the state for the ninth annual Proviso East Greg Foster Invitational this past

weekend.

The meet has become a testament to the life and le gacy of the East alumnus. Schools invited included Metea Valley, Bolingbrook, Cahokia, Kenwood, Mather, Crete-Monee, Hinsdale South, DeKalb, Downers Grove South, Eat St. Louis, Glenbard South, Warren, Kankakee, Nazareth Academy, Proviso East, Oswe go East, Stagg, Rockford East, Romeoville and Lake Park

Lewis recognized as Cook County’s oldest voter

Susie Lewis, a 111-year-old Maywoodian, was reco gnized on Valentine’s Day as Cook County’s oldest voter.

Why does she vote? “If you’re able to vote – then you vote. You do the right thing because it does change things,” said Lewis. The Maywood centenarian was born in 1911 – nearly a decade before women’s right to vote was ratified by the 19th Amendment in 1920 – and has been an eligible voter for over 93 years.

Cook County Clerk Karen A. Yarbrough, another person with long Maywood roots, made a special presentation of Valentine’s Day treats to Lewis. Yarbrough visited Lewis’s home to award her with a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, balloons, and a Valentine’s Day card to commemorate her decades’ love of democracy.

“It’s people like Ms. Susie Lewis who help to keep our democracy alive and well,” said Yarbrough. “Over the years, her votes in dozens and dozens of elections have shaped this county. We are so grateful for her commitment to the electoral process and her community.”
