Late ip in race for third D209 school board seat

Barbahen passes incumbent Kelly as mail-in ballots are tallied

As of the afternoon of April 10, Jennifer Barbahen has taken a 9-vote lead over incumbent Theresa Kelly for the last seat on the Proviso Township High School District 209 school board, as mail-in ballots continue to come in, shifting the unofficial results from Election Night, which had put Kelly in the lead and in that third seat.

As of 3:52 p.m. on Monday afternoon, the latest numbers put Barbahen in the lead with 4,801 votes to Kelly’s 4,792 votes, a 9-vote difference.

On Election Night, Village Free Press reported that Barbahen received 4,539, 14.71%, of votes cast, losing the third spot she had held for most of the night to incumbent Kelly, who received 4,619 votes, 14.97%.

As of the morning of April 10, as mail-in votes were slowly added, Barbahen had received 4,674 votes, 14.80%, putting her only 44 votes behind Kelly, who had received 4,718 votes, 14.93%.

“We are still very hopeful that the mail-in votes will lean in my favor so that the original mission of the three of us reforming the school board will come to fruition,” Barbahen said.

Kelly said she would not provide a comment until official results have been declared by county election officials.

Crucifixion Crossroad

On Good Friday, the streets of Bellwood saw a dozen cars caravan for the annual Cross of Christ parade orga-

nized by the local World Deliverance Christian Center and Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey.

Community members reenacted the Way of the Cross, starting with a car procession where a man portraying Jesus Christ was escorted by men portraying Roman soldiers on an open U-Haul vehicle. Dozens of faithful congregants followed on foot and by car holding “God’s Not Dead” signs.

The procession started at Butterfield Road and Bohland Avenue, heading west until reaching Bellwood Avenue where it went south until turning east on Washington Boulevard, ending at Stevenson Park, 3105 Washington Blvd.

At Stevenson Park, the crucifixion of

Jesus Christ was dramatized up until his resurrection, when the risen Jesus Christ joined children and adults in a cheerful celebration claiming, “God’s Not Dead.”

Bishop Thomas A. Clark said World Deliverance Christian Center, the church he leads, hopes to build this annual event into a tradition that is dearly expected by Proviso community members, bringing them to Bellwood every year.

After the reenactment, free Easter baskets and food were provided to attendees, while Cook County health officials offered free COVID-19 vaccines.

Highly contested, McDermott likely winner of Westchester race for president

Very tight race has McDermott leading Jennings and Maldonado

Kevin McDermott, a for mer District 209 high school board member, is maintaining a lead in the race for Westchester village president. But election results may change as outstanding mail-in ballots are counted and write-in results are announced. Write-in votes results were not announced on Election Night, April 4, but could be announced later this week as the Cook County Clerk’s office begins counting write-in votes by the middle ofthe week, Cook County officials said. Former village manager Greg Hribal and Lowell MartinSeida ran as write-in candidates.

Results could also change as mail-in ballots continue to be counted. As ofMonday morning, 970 ballots remained to be counted for the Westchester village president race. Across the county, the Cook County Clerk’s office was yet to count 66,892 ballots as ofMonday morning. Official election results will be announced and certified no later than April 24, Cook County officials said.

As ofMonday morning, Cook County Clerk data showed McDermott continuing to lead as he did on April 4 with 665 votes (25.98%) followed by Trustee Tracy Jennings with 596 votes (23.28%). Daniel “Danny” Maldonado trailed in third place with 591 (23.09%), two votes ahead ofEdward S. Lezza Jr. who was in third place on election night and had 23.01% ofthe vote, equivalent to 589 votes as of Monday morning.

On Election Night, Maldonado thanked his supporters and family for believing

in him, adding the race is not over yet, as mail-in ballots could change the outcome of the race.

“There’s still votes out there, there’s several, several mail-in ballots that are unaccounted for… I think we’re very close, it’s not over yet,” he said.

Trustee candidates Gia Marie Benline and Victoria Vann who ran on Maldonado’s slate may take two ofthe three seats open for the village board, as they obtained 18.29% and 14.18% ofthe vote, respectively, as of Monday morning.

Maldonado said running with Benline and Vann, who may win their bid for trustees, is a clear indicator ofhis ability to choose leaders who have the “will and energy for the community” and who “will do the best job possible for Westchester.”

“If it is a victory for them tonight, which I think it may be, congratulations to them,” Maldonado said. “It is a clear indication of

my ability to choose leaders, which is why I chose them to be part of my slate.”

Trustee candidate Peter Marzano, who ran on McDermott’s slate, was still the likely winner of third village board seat. He had 14.59% ofthe vote, 38 more votes than Vann who was in second place as of Monday morning.

Kevin Canfield, Sherby J. Miller and Ryan Wright who also ran for trustee, obtained 11.89, 10.92 and 9.93% ofthe vote respectively. Vanessa Sanchez, Michael O. Wright and Travis Morris who ran with Jennings appear to have been unsuccessful as they obtained around 8% of the vote, with 8.06, 6.12 and 6.02% with all precincts reporting as of Monday morning. Also on the ballot for village president was David Gandalak who obtained just 4.65 percent of the vote.

HBCU Spring Break tour gives students insigh into campus life

Local organization helps Proviso Township students pursue college options

Students from Proviso Township high schools boarded buses, setting out on a weeklong adventure across the country as they toured historically Black colleges and universities, an opportunity given to them through a local organization serving students from predominantly low-income communities, in hopes of getting them one step closer to a college education.

Introspect Youth Services, Inc. (IYS) has been serving youth from Chicago’s West Side, including Proviso Township High School District 209 students, since its inception in 1975. The need is to provide resources to help students make the transition from high school to college The community-based agency also provides education and employment services to students from low-income families

Ber nard Clay, executive director of IYS, said they try to cover all the needs a student might have when it comes to transitioning into college, including applying for financial aid, school applications, work with high school counselors, and providing campus visits and tours.

This spring break IYS took 37 students on their 2023 Historically Black University and Colleges Campus Tour. The participating students, a mixture of juniors and seniors, visited 11 campuses in the six-day, five-night tour of HBCUs in the Midwest and Souther n states

Among the schools visited were Central State University, Wilberforce University, Tennessee State University, Fisk University, Tuskegee University, Alabama State University, Jackson State University and Florida A&M.

“We know for a fact that a kid is more likely to attend the schools that they have had the opportunity to visit beforehand,” Clay said. “The majority of the kids we

serve are from lo families and they not get a chance to puses.”

Proviso West senior Jones Jr said he the tour after lear it from another student. thought it would opportunity to experience what college life was like as he gets ready to decide where to pursue a degree in construction engineering.

“One of the colleges that I applied to was one of the colleges that we were going to and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to see a college that I applied to and see what it would be like,” Jones said, saying he liked that Tuskegee University had a great program in his desired field.

Jones said it was also important for him to consider attending historically Black colleges or universities, which is another reason he applied to Tuskegee

“The campus was beautiful,” Jones said. “The people that were there were nice, the community was just beautiful. It looked way better in person. When you look at the campus, when you look it up, yeah it looks nice but to see it in person it makes you think ‘this is a place where I would like to go’.”

IYS also gives students the opportunity to visit local colleges throughout the year included to all 12 Illinois public universities as well as private schools.

“We don’t just limit our visits to HBCUs. We do visit elite institutions like Harvard, Westland College in the New England area,” Clay said. “We have done hundreds of visits over the years.”

Part of what makes these tours successful is that it allows students the opportunity to visit schools where they have already been admitted to or are able to apply, as IYS works with students to make sure that they meet all requirements for admission into the school. This allows students to be able to be set up for success as much as possible.

To be able to participate in a tour, students need to be part of the Introspect programs, which try to reach students through

their work with Proviso’s high school campuses and staff, who often refer students to IYS. Students are also able to seek information on their own.

All IYS programs are free to their participating students, as they are funded through the U.S Department of Education under the Federal TRIO Program, which provides educational opportunity outreach programs to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Since their first colle ge tour in 1975, Clay said they have been able to lend a helping hand to 28,000 kids who have graduated from various colleges across the country.

Kia Clark, a junior at Proviso Math and Science Academy, said that while she does not know where she will go to college after graduation, when she found out about the chance to tour colleges, she jumped on it, saying it was a great way to spend her spring break.

Clark, who enjoyed visiting Tennessee State and Tuskegee University, said she lear ned a lot about campus life and is keeping her education options open.

“All the colleges that we visited gave me a great experience and an eye-opening experience as I didn’t know much about HBCUs to begin with, but the counselors were avid in making sure we had a great experience as well as an educational experience,” Clark said, recalling that her favorite part was interacting with current students attending those universities.

IYS is currently planning their six-week summer program and will be working with Proviso schools to plan a freshman connection event to continue to provide services and opportunities to students in the township.

At the end of this month, Housing Forward, the Maywood based nonprofit, will break ground on the development of its first per manent supportive housing building. It will be located at 1014-1020 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview.

“Ending homelessness is not an event,” said Erik Johnson, its chief development

“any day.” It is, he said, step after the Broadview proved related zoning 2021. Broadview Mayo son, Sen. Kimberly A. and county housing of to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on April 24.

While pandemic-related challenges delayed the start of construction, the nonprofit is eager to see the three-story building completed as it will provide housing stability to individuals with disabilities, U.S. veterans and transition age youth at

risk of homelessness

Individuals at or below 30 percent of the area median income will be eligible to apply. The project will cost $7.8 million, an increase from the initially announced $7 million. Funding will be covered by a mix of federal, state and private funds.

“At Housing Forward, we very much understand that issues sur rounding homelessness and housing and security are all influenced by lack of stable ongoing housing. And we very much believe in a housing first philosophy,” Johnson told Village Free Press.

The new building, designed by architecture fir m Perkins & Will, will provide per manent supportive housing for 20 to 22 people in 16 housing units, with 12 being one-bedroom apar tments and four two-bed-

room apar tments The ground floor will include communal spaces for residents, on-site supportive services for residents, and of fice space for Housing Forward. Outside, there will be a small picnic area and green areas. The second and third floors will house the apar tments, with a small balcony on each floor

“In order for somebody to address issues – whether that’s a long-ter m disability, employment, primary health – housing is the center,” Johnson said. “One can’t participate in addressing multiple issues that may af fect their housing stability until they have a home base.”

Johnson said many of the nonprofit’s partners are excited about the project, “one of many steps” in achieving Housing Forward’s vision of ending homelessness

ree vote margin for Maywood’s nal council seat

Race for third seat tight between Williams and Montgomery

In a contested race with a low voter turnout (10.47%), the People’s Choice party led the race for three open seats on Maywood’s village board. Out of eight candidates running, incumbent Trustees Isiah Brandon and Miguel Jones from the People’s Choice Party appear to be headed for another term with 19.73% and 14.75% of the vote reported by the Cook County Clerk’s office as of April 10, six days out from Election Day.

The third seat is contested between Rachel Montgomery, also from the People’s Choice Party and Rahmaan “Ray” Williams from the Maywood Forward Party.

On Election Night Williams led Montgomery by 9 votes. But by April 10 that lead had diminished to just 3 votes.

Both Williams and Montgomery refrained from declaring victory on Election Night as mail-in ballots could change the result of this tight race. According to Cook County officials, outstanding ballots will continue to be counted and official election results will be certified no later than April 25.

On Election Night, Williams said he felt confident about his campaign.

“I feel confident about the work that we’ve done, the word that we’ve put out on the streets, the people we’ve talked to, the change that folks talk about they want in the village of Maywood,” he said. “So, I’m confident that the voters came out and did what they said they wanted to do.”

Whereas Brandon declared his victory on April 4 when preliminary results were announced.

“It’s very much exciting cause it just proves to me that the residents understand the need for transparency, accountability and sound policy and that’s exactly what I’ve been advocating for as the village trustee,” he said. “Maywood is my home-

town, it has given me so much and it is my plan to make sure I give back what the community has given to me.”

Jones also declared a preliminary victory, adding he understood “results may not be quite final.”

“I feel like for my first term that I left an impression on the community in terms of wh kind of value I can add… so overall I’m satisfied and want to let the residents know that I’m very thankful,” he said.

As of Monday morning, Maywood Forward Party incumbent candidate Shabaun ReyesPlummer had 12.40% of the vote while Tori Garron obtained 12.08 of the vote. It appears Mary “May” Larry and Diann W. Baker were not successful in their bid for Trustees, with just 7.63 and 4.91% of the vote.

Once all outstanding ballots are counted and results are official, Montgomery hopes

Broadview grants $800,000 to repair and reopen park’s pool

Schroeder Pool to be renamed ‘Broadview Strong Community Pool’

The Broadview Park District’s shuttered community pool will be repaired and reopened thanks to a $800,000 grant from the village government.

Broadview village trustees approved the grant at its April 6 special board meeting, paving the way to begin major repairs on the pool that has been closed since 2021. The aim is to have the pool reopened by the summer of 2024. The money will be drawn from the surplus of a $2.5 million state capital construction grant from the State of Illinois.

“My daughter learned to swim at the Schroeder Community Pool 21 years ago, and swimming for med a part of her youth and adult life,” said Mayor Katrina Thompson. “With the pool’s closure two years ago, hundreds of children have been missing both the recreation and the lifesaving swimming lessons of fered, so I am thrilled that the village can help restore this crucial community asset.”

Thompson stressed the importance of kick-star ting community swimming lessons, noting that in 2021, 18 Illinois children lost their lives to accidental drowning. Additionally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of un-

intentional death for children ages 1 to 14. For every child who dies from drowning, another eight receive emergency department care for non-fatal drowning scares.

“Providing swimming lessons for children is a public safety issue,” said Thompson. “Reopening the park district pool, which will be renamed the ‘Broadview Strong Community Pool,’ will be crucial, and in some cases, a life-saving service.”

In addition to swim lessons for children, programming for seniors, such as aquatic aerobics, will also be available.

The village’s public works department will manage the pool’s rehabilitation project in conjunction with the park district administration.

munications for Cook County Clerk Karen A. Yarbrough, there were 7,284 mail-in ballots requested for Proviso Township. As of Monday, April 10, 3,956 mail-in ballots have been returned.

The two candidates who came in first and second place, David Ocampo and Sandra Lee Hixson, belonged to the same candidate slate, Proviso 209 Unites, as Barbahen and expressed a bittersweet feeling with the results, hoping that she would be able to pull enough votes by the time official results are announced.

“I think it is important to note that I ran with a team of three and we ran for all three seats,” said Barbahen. “The three reform candidates of HBO, two of those seats are secured so we are very proud and happy, and we feel like we can make positive change.”

Medina, who sought her third term on the board, lost her seat in this election, coming in fifth with 3,749 votes, 11.87%. Wagner did not seek reelection.

According to the Cook County Clerk’s office, mail-in ballots have two weeks from Election Day to get to the clerk’s office and will be counted if they were postmarked by April 4.
