School board plans three sur veys seeking feedback

The new board majority is making big changes to how the Board of Education for Proviso Township high schools operate, starting with being open to receiving community feedback as new surveys will be going out to the community.

Amanda Grant, newly elected as school board president, discussed the three new surveys that will be sent out soon to Proviso Township High School District 209 students, faculty, and parents.

The approval of the surveys, which passed with a unanimous vote, occurred during the second meeting of the board on May 30, which was dedicated to public comment as the new board majority works to address grievances and community concerns.

“The second one will be dedicated, for the first few months at least, to hearing the backlog of arbitrations and grievances that we have,” Grant said during the May 30 meeting. “Once we have caught up on the concerns from the students, parents, and staf f of this district, we will start a round of meetings that are more community focused.”

Following up on the promise of improved communication between the board and the community, the new surveys will consist of “open ended” questions aimed to allow feedback on a broader scope, a notable difference from the “yes or no” surveys previously emailed out from D209 for other topics, including the controversial interest of purchasing the St. Joseph campus in Westchester from Supt. James Henderson.

Nazareth Academy to induct Love into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame

Julian Love, who earlier this year joined the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, will

be honored for his remarkable athletic career by his high school Nazareth Academy. In a ceremony taking place on June 15, Love will be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

“It feels great to be honored by Naz,” Love told the Village Free Press in an email. “The community has always embraced me and though I’m getting reco gnized individually, it truly was a family environment that led to all my success.”

Love, a graduate of the high school’s class of 2016, demonstrated his potential for a successful professional football career when he played for the school’s football team. Wearing the No. 20 Roadrunners jersey, he was a twotime state champion in football. In 2014, Love earned All Conference honors in the East Suburban Catholic Conference and in 2015 he was reco gnized as the Conference MVP. To honor his le gacy, Nazareth Academy will officially retire

HOW TO REACH US

June water bills rise for Westchester residents

New water meters may bring further increases

Westchester residents will see an increase in their June water bills as the village applies the increase in water rates, effective May 1, to the upcoming June water bills, due for payment in July.

The increase is mandated by a 2017 village ordinance (2017-2237) that established the annual rate increases for Westchester’s domestic and commercial users. The new rate for water usage is $12.36 per thousand gallons.

The village will also charge a garbage fee, effective July 1 through June 30, 2024. Non-seniors will pay $55.04 and seniors will pay $47.19 with their discount on a bimonthly basis.

Sewer rates will be $1.50 per thousand gallons of water and the sewer infrastructure fee will be $6 per month, the same amount as the monthly water infrastructure fee.

Some Westchester residents were surprised by the increase, as expressed on social media, because they did not receive advance notice. The update was posted on the village’s website on May 28. The announcement was also included in the village’s June 2023 newsletter.

The increase in rates comes as the village began its water meter replacement program, which, according to the village administration, will replace around 6,400 of 7,000 residential water meters. Accord-

ing to the village, most cu rent water meters are ov 20 years old. With age, water meters lose accuracy resulting in “unaccounted water usage, loss from waste and lost revenue.”

For some residents, new meters may bring increases in their water bills down the line as their old meter may have been inaccurately functioning and measuring their home’s water usage, though the village will not test each water meter to determine how inaccurate each meter was.

It is estimated that residents will see a $12 to $22 cost increase in their bi-monthly bill, after the meters are replaced, according to the village. Residents will not be charged for any unaccounted water from their old meter, the village said.

The village contracted Core & Main in 2022 to replace aging water meters, and they contracted with United Meters Inc. to install the new water meters. As a result, residents can expect a licensed plumber from United Members Illinois to visit their homes to replace their water meters.

There is no cost for residents to re place the water meter but they may have to pay

for replacing their main shut-of f valve if it is inoperable. The replacement fee is $250 unless residents choose to replace them on their own. If so, residents will have to hire a licensed Illinois plumber re gistered in Westchester and apply for a village permit at no cost. In addition, if a bonded jumper cable is needed, residents can choose to have it installed for a $50 fee.

Water usage restrictions are also in effect throughout the village from May 15 through September 15, when residents are restricted from watering their outdoor areas, cleaning outdoor surfaces and building and filling up pools from 12 pm to 6 pm.

The goal of the surveys is to address issues and make improvements to help students have a successful school year and a successful experience throughout their high school career at Proviso, said Grant during the meeting.

During the meeting, Grant also asked for support from D209 faculty members, including Henderson, and D209 families to share the survey so they can receive more input.

“Once we have that feedback, that is something I would like our future Cooperation Committee to take a look at and really start identifying common themes and common solutions that we can work on things

that work for everyone,” said Grant.

The development of the Proviso Community Cooperation committee was also announced during the May 4 special meeting of the board when new board members, David Ocampo, Jennifer Barbahen, and Sandra Hixson, were sworn in. The committee, which has not been established yet, will be composed of citizens who will help serve as “watchdogs” on the district and the board, as well as advocates for Proviso students. Grant said during the May 4 meeting that the committee will be open to students, parents, and community members who would like to participate, re gardless of experience.

Grant said the surveys will be sent out in the upcoming days.

Nazareth honors NFL player

the No. 20 jersey.

“We’re so excited to make him the very first person whose football jersey would be retired,” said Deborah Tracy, Nazareth Academy’s president. She added it is great to see the for mer student athlete excel. “We are just so incredibly proud of him.”

A native of Westchester, Love also participated in Nazareth Academy’s track and field team, the theatre and baseball programs and was a Eucharistic minister. Love said he carries an important lesson from his time at Nazareth.

“The biggest lesson I’ve taken with me is that you are never too big to do the little things,” he said. “Coach Tim Racki has always preached on the fundamentals of the game and I made it my goal while playing at Naz to always be intentional to the details.”

“This is still my mindset as I line up on an NFL field. It’s something that I preach to the next generation of players coming up in the game,” he added.

On several occasions, Love has shared his experience with Nazareth’s students and athletes, Tracy said.

“Julian is just an amazing student, one that you just never forget,” Tracy said. “His presence, smile, kindness; the way he lives up to our four pillars: scholarship, service, spirit and unity” Tracy said.

The school has closely followed his steps after high school, when Love joined Notre Dame University, Tracy said. In his junior year, he helped the team to an undefeated re gular season and a Colle ge Football Playoff berth. In his final season, Love was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award for being the best defensive back in colle ge football.

His career in the National Football League started in 2019 when he joined the New York Giants. He quickly rose to the top, being voted by his teammates as a defensive team captain in 2022, the same year he was named the winner of the George Young-Ernie Accorsi Media Good Guy Award.

“We’d like to think we’re part of the foundation that launched him into such an amazing career, but we’re just a small part,” Tracy said. “We’re just excited that we know him and we see him doing so well.”
