A new cannabis dispensary owned by Viola Brands, a Black-owned producer and licensed reseller of premium cannabis products, will open its first Chicagoland store at 1516 W. Roosevelt Rd., Broadview on June 24. Viola Chi is one of two stores coming to the Chicago area owned by the company, co-founded by Hyde Park native Dan Pettigrew and business partner Al Harrington, a for mer NBA player.
“It’s really exciting for me because it’s a homecoming,” Pettigrew said. “For Viola, it’s an expansion into the Chicago market, one of the biggest markets in the country.”
He added Broadview met all the internal criteria for what the company was looking for in a location and the timing was right.
“We just fell in love with the location,” he said. “The amount of traffic, the community… It’s an incredible city and it’s incredibly well run.”
Viola Brands was founded in 2011 with a mission to increase equity within the cannabis industry by providing opportunities for Black and Brown communities to be part of the industry. Harrington named the company after his grand-

By FRANCIA GARCIA HERNANDEZ Staff Reporter“Help save the sick fox!” reads the headline of a GoFundMe page started
by a group of Westchester residents who teamed up to help rescue and rehabilitate local wildlife affected by mange. Since last summer, the volunteers helped save five wild foxes and a coyote as they recover from the disease. This summer, they are getting ready to help more sick animals, vital to the local ecosystem.
“The Westchester community loves and cares for the wildlife here,” Tessa Martyn, a resident of Westchester for
23 years, said. “Through this project mission, I’ve seen it firsthand and it’s been really special and inspiring to see.”
She opened the GoFundMe page last summer after a coyote sick with mange was spotted in Westchester. Thanks to the ef for ts of Martyn and other volunteers, the coyote was trapped and treated at Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife. At the St.

Forest Park mayor Rory Hoskins was one of the final six candidates to fill the Cook County Board vacancy left when 1st District Commissioner Brandon Johnson resigned to become mayor of Chicago.
The committee made up of Democratic Party committeepersons representing Chicago Wards and suburban townships that fall within the 1st District chose Johnson’s successor on June 20, after this issue’s print deadline. But in a press release issued one day earlier, Illinois Senate President Don Harmon (D-39th) announced the slate of the final six candidates, which included Hoskins. Committee spokesperson Tom Bowen said they were the final six candidates chosen after considering the resumes.
While Johnson had to give up his seat because Chicago mayors can’t hold other elected offices, nothing in the Cook County codes of ordinances explicitly
bars suburban mayors from serving on the county board. Forest Park municipal code doesn’t have any provisions stopping mayors from holding other elected offices, either.
Each member of the selection committee held a vote equivalent to how much the total vote Johnson got in their township or ward during the 2022 county board election. Harmon, who serves as the Oak Park Township committeeperson, and County Clerk Karen Yarbrough, the Proviso Township committeeperson, collectively held 58.72% of the vote. Hoskins supported both elected officials, and Yarbrough attended his swearing-in ceremony on May 8, after Hoskins won a second term by a comfortable margin.
Hoskins did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.
If Hoskins were to resign the mayor’s office, Commissioner of Accounts & Finance Maria Maxham, a for mer Forest Park Review editor, will step in as interim mayor until the village council fills the vacancy by a simple majority vote.
The city members of the commission included Ald. Daniel LaSpata (1st), 2nd Ward Committeeperson Tim Egan, 26th Ward Committeeperson Angee Gonzalez Rodriguez, Ald. Walter Burnett (27th), Ald.
Jason Ervin (28th), Ald. Chris Taliafer ro (29th), Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) and Ald. Emma Mitts (37th).
The remaining finalists were mostly from the city portion of the district. That includes Rev. Ira J. Acree, co-chair of the Leaders Network, a faith-based West Side social justice group and pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church; for mer 29th Ward aldermanic candidate and Cook County Board president candidate Zerlina SmithMembers, for mer 37th Ward aldermanic candidate and education activist Tara Stamps, and activist Claiborne Wade, who is originally from Austin but currently lives in Forest Park
The committee met at The Carleton of Oak Park Hotel’s Foxboro Room. 1110 Pleasant St. at 7 p.m. The meeting was open to the public.

District 91 students will soon have a leg up on all of us who started learning a second language in middle school as the Forest Park School District 91 has decided to introduce Spanish in primary schools starting this fall.
Students at Betsy Ross Primary Elementary School, 1315 Marengo Ave. and Garfield Elementary School, 543 Hannah Ave. will be introduced to Spanish, the most common nonEnglish language spoken in the United States according to the 2019 Census, beginning their kindergarten year
According to a press release from D91, the district sees this as an opportunity for students to engage with a foreign language and broaden their cultural horizons.
“By integrating Spanish language instruc-
tion early on, the district aims to provide students with a solid foundation and the necessary skills to continue their language lear ning journey in the future,” read the press release
Supt. Elizabeth Alvarez said the change commits the district to students’ success by recognizing the value of early language learning and how that impacts young student’s cognitive development along with their understanding of the world around them.
“We are committed to laying the foundation for language acquisition and cultural appreciation from an early age,” Alvarez said in the press release
The move to begin language learning at an earlier age was not without its challenges, the district said in the press release, and although it did not specify what those entitled, it expressed its commitment to ensuring student success as well as providing appropriate resources and materials to help on their language learning journey, expanding into Forest Park Middle School.
D91 was not able to be reached for comment.

mother Viola, who tried cannabis to relieve the pain caused by glaucoma. Harrington said this experience inspired him to start a company that would help others access the medicinal benefits of cannabis and bring high quality products.
Viola Brands grows and manufactures its products and blends of cannabis strains, which are sold across eight states in the United States and throughout Canada.
At its Broadview store, Viola Chi will sell premium cannabis products to provide “a unique wellness experience” for medicinal patients and adult consumers.
“What we want to do is provide the best products in the state at this location,” Pettigrew said, adding the company’s 12 years of experience in legal cannabis allows them to curate a selection of tested, clean, high-quality and diverse products.
The Broadview dispensary will sell premium quality cannabis flowers, pre-rolled
“joints,” vapes and edibles and create 45 jobs.
“We have a strong record of engaging with communities,” Pettigrew said, adding the company has engaged with local elected officials and authorities in addition to its community initiative “Viola Cares.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will occur at the new dispensary on June 24. Elected officials and for mer NBA player Stephen Jackson and rapper Vic Mensa are expected to attend. In the future, Iman Shumpert, a for mer NBA player with Oak Park roots, will release his own signature cannabis strain “TSA Approved,” exclusively for sale at Viola Chi.
Legendary country music artist Dolly Parton is putting in overtime after her “9 to 5, partnering with the state of Illinois through her Imagination Library program to give free books to children from birth to age five
The announcement of the $1.6 million partnership came from Gover nor J.B. Pritzker and Lt. Gover nor Juliana Stratton during their visit to Maplewood School in Cahokia Heights, near the Missouri border on Tuesday, June 13.
“Imagination Libraries are already working their magic at a few dozen locations around the state, and the teamwork of my
administration and the Dollywood Foundation will make it possible to bring Dolly to every doorstep,” said Pritzker in the press release.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program launched in 1995 that mails “free, high-quality books” to children from birth to age five regardless of a family’s income. After its launch, the program ex-
anded and by 2003, the Imagination Library had mailed one million books. The program has also expanded into Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland following the success in the States. The Imagination Library is supported by The Dollywood Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Parton in 1988.
While Parton’s foundation has already partnered with a few cities and school disricts, the new deal will take the program across the entire state of Illinois.
“As a longtime early childhood advocate, I’m incredibly excited for what’s to come,” said Pritzker in a press release. “These are some of the most crucial years for learning of a person’s lifetime, and this initiative will connect low-income families to resources their children will need for lifelong success.”
“Every child deserves the opportunity to discover worlds beyond their imagination,” said Stretton in the press release. “Thanks to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, children
in every corner of Illinois can receive free books mailed directly to their home.”
Along with the announcement of the expansion of the program, Pritzker announced the state’s investments in early childhood education and care Additionally, $250 million in funding for the Smart Start Illinois Plan, which includes the following, was also announced:
■ $75 million increase for the Early Childhood Block Grant, which creates 5,000 new preschool seats for next year
■ $130 million to support the creation of the Childcare Workforce Compensation Contracts, which will increase wages for childcare workers
■ $40 million to increase Early Intervention and help provide access to therapeutic services for children 3 and under who are, or are at risk, or developmental delay of disability
■ $5 million to expand the Home Visiting program
The Office of Cook County Sherif f is helping the Village of Forest Park clean up used hypodermic needles and other debris on and around the CSX Railroad tracks embankment.
The Sherif f’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP) allows people convicted of certain non-violent crimes to do community service instead of jail time. The program “provides labor to municipalities, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations.”
Sherif f Tom Dart’s spokesperson Kathy Carmody said they had SWAP workers get involved at the Village of Forest Park’s request.
Homelessness, drug use and panhan-
the expressway to separate rights of way on the north side. Forest Park Director of Public Health & Safety Steve Glinke previously told this newspaper that even the village isn’t entirely sure where CSX’s ownership ends and the other entities’ ownership begins.
Forest Park Department of Public Works has cleaned up the embankment in the past, and the village has been working with Housing Forward, ShowerUp Chicago, the Night Ministry and Loyola Street Medicine team to provide services for homeless individuals who sometimes camp out at the viaduct.
Carmody said the village of Forest Park was meeting “another group within the Sherif f’s office” to find other ways to address the village’s concerns. That group referred the village to SWAP.
“[There are] unhoused people, homeless people tend to hang out there, so our office, over the past several months, has been using our SWAP team to clean up the area,” she said. “There were a lot of used hypodermic needles that were observed that we re able to dispose of.”

Charles-based nonprofit rescue agency, the coyote made a full recovery and was later released back into its natural habitat.
“One day the coyote ended up showing up at the end of our block and I followed it. It went over to the Westchester primary school and it laid in the field for about two hours,” Martyn said. “I stayed there with it making sure no one went up or scared it away because, at that point, the coyote was in pretty bad shape and we knew we wanted to help.”
Sarcoptic mange, or mange for short, is caused by mites that infest coyotes and foxes. Mange causes hair loss, the for mation of itchy crusts on the animal’s skin that can cause small wounds and secondary infections. Mange also weakens their immune system, debilitating the animals, who are often unable to eat and lose the ability to re gulate their body temperature. It can lead to org an failure, which in many cases, is deadly.
After the coyote was rescued, Westchester residents also noticed foxes sick with mange and reported their sightings on a Facebook group, which eventually led to five foxes being rescued and transported to Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife.
“We’ve been working closely with them as well with our amazing trapper Ty Holden, of the Wildlife Police, Inc.,” Martyn said. “They’re both some of the best of the best.”
Through donations to the GoFundMe page, residents help fund the costs of professional wildlife trapping services and supplies and donate to Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife, which cares for sick animals. At the nonprofit, volunteers provide a series of treatments and feed the animals, limiting their interactions so they remain wild and can be released into their natural habitats once they
fully recover.
“They’ve done a truly amazing job rehabbing our animals around town and when they needed donations for baby season or food, everybody’s donations from Westchester helped give back in that way,”
September and mama and/or daddy foxes are getting sicker and are unable to take care of their kits,” Martyn explained on the GoFundMe page on June 4.
Foxes play a vital role in the local ecosystem as they spread the seeds of fruits and ve getables they eat and can help control the population of small mammals and rodents they eat as prey. Red foxes also play a vital role in ecological recycling, the breakdown of organic matter into nutrients returned to the soil. In urban ecosystems, they help control the rodent tion, helping reduce
the GoFundMe page and raise awareness of the importance of caring for their local wildlife.
“I’ve never seen so many people get involved. Teachers, parents, kids, all notifying me of fox sightings and coyote sightings so that we can help these animals,” Martyn said. “We have kids at school drawing pictures of foxes for an art contest, naming [it] ‘it takes a village’ and it truly does.”
she added.
The nonprofit Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife is run solely by volunteers and relies on donations to feed, care, house and rehabilitate wildlife under its care and run education programs.
“On average, for a fox or a coyote, just for feeding [it], it’s about $80 a day,” Martyn said. “Right now, with baby season they have over 500 animals [under their care], so you can imagine how that adds up.”
So far this summer, Westchester residents have noticed more foxes sick with mange, including families with kits. This creates a difficult situation as sick adult foxes may become unable to take care of their kits or teach them life skills like hunting. Yet, if humans try to rescue the cubs and fail, they are likely to become orphans as the mother fox will abandon them.
“We’re at a point where it seems some of the kits around town are already on their own, which usually doesn’t happen until
of Lyme disease carried ticks that infest rodents. ally, foxes pose no threat to people or pets.
Residents can help porting sightings of sick foxes coyotes on the W estchester Citizens Facebook page or the GoFundMe page created by Martyn. If an animal is critically sick, residents are encouraged to contact Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife. They can also donate to
