Can Maywood turn old Bushwood site into entertainment venue?

Village bought golf driving range from county land bank

The for mer Bushwood Golf Practice Center, 30 Madison St., could become an entertainment venue under the village of Maywood’s plans for the property. The property was purchased by the village in May 2021 from the Cook County Land Bank Authority, records show. According to the records, the Village of Maywood paid $10 for the property, which was used as a landfill prior to becoming a golf range.

As re ported by Village Free Press in 2019, the family-owned golf range ceased to operate when the owners filed for bankruptcy as it was no longer able to pay a hefty annual property tax bill. In 2017, the taxes were $301,783 annually. The delinquent 8-ac re property then became part of the Cook County Land Bank Authority’s inventory of vacant residential, commercial and industrial property. Under the village’s plans, the property could

Scouts driving for food

Westchester Boy Scout Troop 73 in May 2023.

Saturday project helps Westchester Food Pantry

As part of their service to the community and part of who Westchester Boy Scout Troop 73 is as people, they have added an additional food drive to their yearly schedule, hosting the ‘Summer Stock Up’ for the Westchester Food Pantry this Saturday.

The troops will be helping collect both perishable and non-perishable foods at the Westchester Food Pantry, 1938 S. Mannheim Rd., on Saturday, July 8 from noon to 2 p.m. to help fight food insecurities both in Westchester and surrounding communities.

Kathleen Franzwa, who is on the troop committee as well as being a scout parent, said Troop 73 has already been involved with the food pantry through their volunteering, which they have been doing a few times a week for a couple of months.

According to Franzwa, Scout Master Ryan Wright saw the need for food and asked if another drive could be held this summer.

Traditionally, the troop hosts food drives near the holidays, often during Thanksgiving season.

“The summer months are often the months where people don’t think about donating,” Franzwa said. “Because it is not the holiday time and they are really short on food right now and their numbers are up way high.”

The troop’s committee ag reed to help

and decided to host the ‘Summer Stock Up’ drive, passing out flyers at the Fourth of July Parade to g et the word out and asking people to drop of f food on Saturday.

There is a lot going on but all the COVID related funding, SNAP, the expansion stopped federally,” Franzwa said. “That and inflation and increased housing and gas costs, Ms. Grant, the executive director of the food pantry, told me she has never seen numbers like this so we need to step up.”

Amanda Grant, executive director of the Westchester Food Pantry, said there is a huge need.

“Need throughout our area continues to rise,” Grant said. “Inflation, reduction of SNAP benefits and the end of the grocery and gas tax holiday have all

taken a toll on our community members. The Westchester Food Pantry is serving more people than ever before.”

Vicente Salgado III, scout for Troop 73 and recent graduate of Westchester Middle School, said serving the community is a big part of being a scout.

“As scouts, we are meant to help out the community and the environment,” Salgado said. “The food drive helps many people out by [being able to] get food.”

Salgado, who volunteers at the food pantry, said he helps stock up the pantry and helps customers carry out the food to their cars. He has also helped pass out flyers to spread the word about the need for food.

Grant said the pantry has had a longtime partnership with Troop 73 with scouts volunteering on a monthly basis throughout their school year.

“We are so grateful for their help,” Grant said, adding that the scouts will be

handling the entire food drive, from retrieving items from donors’ cars to sorting and stocking up the shelves.

Grant said the pantry is currently in need of cereal, spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, meals in a can such as ravioli, stew, chili, as well as coffee, tea, and baking mixes.

On Saturday, the food will be collected directly from the donor’s cars and the scouts will organize the food and stock up not only the pantry but the two Proviso area community fridges, located at the Forest Park Community Center, 517 Des Plaines Avenue, Forest Park, and at the Hampton House, 804 S. 17th Avenue., Maywood.

Franzwa said they wanted to make sure this served the surrounding communities as well, including all of Proviso Township.

While food security might not always seem visible, Franzwa said the pantry is there to help alongside the community.

“When the Westchester

Food Pantry is in need, our community members rally,” Franzwa said, adding that during the pandemic they had record breaking numbers for their f all food drives. “I am confident that Westchester will do it again, that they will show up. I have faith in our community.”

The food drive will be held on Saturday, July 8 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Westchester Food Pantry, 1938

HOW TO REACH US

Separated by 1 vote, Maywood trustee seat headed for recount

Judge refuses to dismiss suit seeking to overturn April 4 result

While this year’s elections for Maywood’s village government seemed over, the village is headed for a full recount over the seat of current Village Board Trustee Rahmaan “Ray” Williams, if funding for the recount is secured.

On June 30, Judge Viviana Martinez of the 14th Subcircuit of the Cook County Judicial Circuit Court ruled in favor of Rachel Montgomery, a Maywood trustee candidate who filed a petition to contest the very nar row results of the April 4 election for trustee.

“We believe that our evidence and the results of the recounts will show that Rachel Montgomery was the true winner on April 4, and we are excited that this race is not over, and every valid vote will be counted,” Maywood Trustee Isiah Brandon told Village Free Press in an email.

Brandon, who successfully ran on the same slate as Montgomery added he believes the recount will go in favor of Montgomery and “she will be a strong

voice for accountability, transparency and sound policy.”

Williams, the Moving Maywood Forward’s candidate appeared to have won the election by one vote over Montgomery, who ran with the People’s Choice Party. According to the election results certified by the Cook County Board of Elections, Williams garnered 618 votes, while Montgomery who garnered 617. Williams was sworn in at a ceremony on May 30 and has been in office since.

Montgomery filed a petition for a recount before the Circuit Cour t of Cook County on May 23. An amended petition followed on May 24, according to records of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. On June 26, Williams filed a response to the petition with a motion to

dismiss it. Two days after, Montgomery filed a response to the motion to dismiss.

On June 30, Judge Martinez denied Williams’ motion to dismiss and “found that there were suf ficient alle gations to allow the recount to proceed,” Brandon and Montgomery said.

The Cook County Clerk’s Office confirmed the next hearing on this case will take place on July 20 at 9:30 a.m. The clerk is currently preparing cost estimates for a full recount and will seek a bond from Montgomery to potentially cover costs. The date for the actual recount is yet to be determined.

“So, on the 20th of this month the judge will decide what day the full recount will take place and give us the instructions,” Montgomery told Village Free Press.

Montgomery said Trustee Isiah Brandon and Trustee Miguel Jones, from the People’s Choice Party, “have been very suppor tive in the process” and helped her identify a qualified attorney to navigate the process to request a full recount.

The Circuit Court of Cook County will issue its full written opinion re garding its reason for granting the petitioner’s verified petition for election contest and denying respondent’s motion to dismiss before the July 20 hearing, Brandon said. Williams declined this publicatio n’s request for comment.

become an entertainment venue. Maywood Trustee Isiah Brandon said that was the use proposed for the property when the village applied to purchase it. The village would also be responsible for running the property, he said. Currently, the village needs to complete a property assessment to determine how much money the village needs to invest to “get the property in a better condition.”

The village’s plans for this property date back to 2021, when then-mayor Edwena Perkins and the village board approved the purchase of the property from the Cook County Land Bank Authority. Village records show that in April 2021 the board approved the payment of a $7,500 acquisition fee for the conveyance of the property to the village. Plans for this property could also include creating a pathway near the property’s west side adjacent to the DesPlaines River. If completed, the pathway would connect Madison Street to the por-

tion of the Illinois Prairie Path adjacent to Maybrook Drive, though more details are unclear.

Mayor Nathaniel Booker did not re spond to this publication’s request for comment before deadline.
