Race in 7th District primary is gathering contenders vs. Davis

Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Er vin expects to declare candidacy in early fall

While the Democratic primary is still nine months away, long-time incumbent U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (7th) is already facing two declared challengers, one challenger who hasn’t declared yet, and a perennial conservative candidate banking on the fact that nobody else will run in a Republican primary in the heavily Democratic district.

Austin activist Kina Collins, who ran against Davis twice in the Democratic primary, is challenging him again. She came much closer to winning the primary in 2022 than she did in 2020, and she believes that she can improve on those numbers. Pilsen teacher Nikhil Bhatia announced his intention to run in late June. And while Chicago city treasurer and for mer state representative Melissa Conyears-Ervin hasn’t officially announced her run, her congressional campaign commit-

Maywood trustee seat recount uncertain

Cost for per forming the recount estimated at around $32,000

It is uncertain whether a full recount will take place in the disputed race for village trustee in Maywood’s April elec-

tion. The potential cost of a full recount of the Maywood vote is around $32,000 and Rachel Montgomery, the candidate who came up one vote short on Election Day, is evaluating her options.

On July 18, the Cook County Clerk’s office told the Circuit Court of Cook County the cost of a recount. The county clerk’s office presented a motion to secure a bond equivalent to 10% of the recount costs estimated to be $32,000.

To continue with the process and proceed with a recount, Montgomery has to

pay the bond or respond before the end of this week, she said in an interview with Village Free Press on July 24.

As previously reported, Montgomery filed a petition to contest the April 4 election results in which she appeared to have lost to Rahmann “Ray” Williams by one vote. Williams was sworn into office and sits on the village council.

Her attorney is looking into avenues to have the fee waived and proceed with

tee has already raised $283,436. In an interview with this newspaper, Conyears-Ervin said she will announce her run in early f all.

Chad Koppie, a far mer from Elgin, ran for various local and state-wide offices over the years. Now he is running as a Republican after mounting an unsuccessful write-in campaign in 2022. According to his campaign, he wanted to take advantage of the fact that the district isn’t likely to get any other Republican candidates to campaign in both the primary and the general election. The primary will take place on 2024, and the general election will take place on Nov. 5, 2024.

The 7th congressional district includes most of Austin and North Lawndale and the entirety of West Garfield Park and East Garfield Park The suburban portion includes all of Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park, Maywood, Bellwood, Broadview and Hillside, among other communities. Under the U.S. Constitution, a congressional candidate must live in the state where they are running, but they don’t have to live in the district –in fact, Bhatia and Koppie don’t.

Collins first ran against Davis in 2020, getting 13.8% of the vote in the Democratic primary. She did nearly three times as well in 2022, earning 45.6% of the vote.

Collins said she thought long and hard about whether she wanted to run again, but her supporters ultimately swayed her.

“My supporters, residents in the district [and] my donors thought it was a good idea for me to run again,” she said.

Collins believes her campaign can build of f of her record and improve on her numbers

“We’re offering something different to the district, and I think that our

field game has expanded, and our support has expanded, and my face reco gnition and my name reco gnition has expanded,” she said.

In a July 11 campaign launch press conference, she got support from several Chicago aldermen both within and outside the district, though none of them represent the West Side. Collins endorsed Ald. Chris Taliafer ro’s (29th) in this year’s runof f campaign against Davis-backed C.B. Johnson, but she said he ’t returned the favor

“I would love his support and his endorsement,” Collins said. “Ald. Taliafer ro my constituent in this district, so I’m going to court his vote just like I’m going to court any other across the district.”

She also received endorsements from several members of the police district councils, including 15th police district council president Carmelita Earls and 11th District council member Alees Edwards. Edwards was one of the district council candidates Davis endorsed.

On the suburban side, Collins ments from Oak village Buchanan, Ravi kat, Lucia Brian Stra

various campaign committees.

In April, she for med an exploratory committee to look at a run for Davis’ seat should the incumbent decide not to run. After Davis announced on June 10 that he would run again, ConyearsErvin told the Chicago Sun-Times that she would pursue the seat anyway.

In an interview with this newspaper, she said she intends to officially launch her campaign in the early fall. Conyears-Ervin said that, as a life-long 7th District resident, she wanted to be “a new breath of fresh air.” While she said she would reveal a detailed campaign platform once she makes the official announcement, it will be built around the foundation of supporting working families. Conyears-Ervin reflected that she was raised by a single mother who benefitted from a supportive network of friends and neighbors.

“I’m born and raised in the district, and it is very personal for me,” she said. “I know the struggles of working families, and we need someone who’s going to be the bold leader, and at I plan to

Former Shedd Aquarium diver to lead climate conversation in Westchester

Kent Taylor, climate advocate, will share how collective action can lead to a carbon-free future

Kent Taylor is no stranger to the effects of climate change on ecosystems, a phenomenon that has been widely covered in recent years, but that called him to action since the early 1990s. On July 29, he hopes to inspire Westchester and Proviso residents to push for a carbon-free future in a conversation organized by the Green Residents of Westchester Commission.

“I’m really glad to have this opportunity with the GROW Commission and describe how promising the solutions are and how close we are to these solutions,” Taylor told Village Free Press. He invites the public to join a free conversation at the Westchester Village Hall boardroom, 10300 Roosevelt Rd., from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

GROW Commissioner Elizabeth Wiseman-Chase invited Taylor to speak to the village. She hopes learning about the scale of this global crisis will encourage Westchester residents to support current proposals to reduce Westchester’s greenhouse gas emissions, among other climate initiatives.

Taylor volunteered as a coral reef diver and educator at the Shedd Aquarium for 25 years. In the late 1980s, he noticed coral reefs bleaching when diving in the Caribbean. Intrigued, he asked a marine biologist at the Shedd Aquarium and learned reefs were bleaching from excess ocean heat. Geologically, these events were not so serious nor frequent, but they would become a serious problem for years to come due to global warming, he learned. In fact, the United Nations Environment Programme estimates that up to 90% of coral reefs might disappear by 2050 due to prolonged ocean heatwaves. It is estimated coral reefs provide up to $2.7 trillion per year in services such as flooding protection for coastlines, food security and tourism.

It was the first time he heard the term global warming, and it would not be the last.

“After doing some more research and study on it, including reading Al Gore’s book ‘Earth in the Balance,’ published in 1992, I started adding comments about bleaching of the reefs to my presentations at the Shedd,” Taylor said. “I was the first diver there to do that.”

Years later, he resigned from the Shedd Aquarium as a volunteer emeritus and sought a bigger platform to bring change. He joined Al Gore’s organization, The Climate Reality Project, in 2007.

“I was one of the 600 people who first joined,” Taylor said. At the July 29 event, he wants attendees to learn one powerful message

PROVIDEDr

feel that a vast majority of their constituents are behind them when they make some bold proposals in terms of energy,” Taylor said. “We have to give them lift under their wings.”

“We need renewed focus because the quicker we solve the climate crisis, which is solvable, the sooner things can go back to normal.”

In his talk, Taylor will share how existing technology solutions in transportation and power generation can help transform the world’s infrastructure from a fossil-fuel-based one to an electric one. To achieve this, collective action demanding clean energy is required.

“We have to trust democracy to work and the only way it works is if politicians

He added that will be the main driver of change as countries and municipalities aim to reach their goals of being carbon-free in the next five to 10 years, an ef fort that is already visible in Westchester.

In Westchester, the GROW Commission has spearheaded ef for ts to reduce the village’s greenhouse gas emissions and widely adopt solar energy, Wiseman-Chase said. Last year, the commission invited the Citizens Utility Board to educate residents about solar energy programs available to Illinois residents, such as the Grow Solar Chicagoland program and Illinois Solar for All.

Additionally, the commission has focused on educating Westchester residents

on options to reduce the use of residential natural gas, one of the main sources of the village’s emissions according to the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. It has also promoted alternative modes of transportation such as biking, walking, carpooling and using public transportation. In August, the commission will host a presentation about the Solar Switch Chicagoland program, a program that increases access to af fordable solar panel installation for homeowners by organizing group purchases. Solar Switch organizes reverse auctions where qualified solar panel installers compete to offer their best price. The solar panel installer with the best offer wins and is connected with re gistered homeowners, who decide if they want to complete the installation of solar panels.

Through these programs, the ecological commission works to “improve the quality of air, water, land; reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize waste and preserve the natural environment,” Wiseman-Chase said.

“You can see the synergy between these two approaches,” Taylor said. “It is the local showing the nation how to do it.”

Westchester-based healthcare nonpro t receives $30k grant

The nonpro t provides low-cost health ser vices to adults in Proviso Township

Access to Care, a nonprofit primary healthcare program for low-income, insured and uninsured individuals, received a $30,000 community grant from Northwestern Medicine. The grant will support the nonprofit’s operations to provide healthcare to its members, many of whom cannot afford health insurance or do not qualify for health benefits.

“We are excited to receive funding for a second year from Northwestern Medicine,” Kathi Franklin, president and CEO of Access to Care, said in a press release

The grant will help the nonprofit provide individuals with access to physicians in their own communities, she said. Access to Care fills in the gap for those adults who would otherwise struggle to afford healthcare. It

works with local physicians, who volunteer to be providers to the Access to Care network to offer low-cost medical services. As volunteers, they determine an annual number of patients they’ll serve. Access to Care pays them a fixed rate per patient and patients only have to cover a $5 fee per office visit

“Our services include $5 primary doctor visits,” said Lourdes Becerra, public relations and outreach manager. The cost of medical services, such as lab tests, X-rays and mammograms are also $5 per service or test. Access to Care also offers low-cost medications, with costs that range from $15 to $40.

The nonprofit provides care to many patients with chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

“Many of our patients have diabetes and so they’re able to go to the doctor’s visits to manage their diabetes,” Becerra said. “We also offer free glucose test trips.”

To provide these services for nearly 5,000 people in suburban Cook County and Chicago’s northwest side, Access to Care relies on donations, both from private and public donors. Near 75% of Access to Care’s mem-

residents about its services and the nonprofit would like to partner with other villages to serve more residents in need of affordable health care

To become a member of the Access to Care network, uninsured individuals must meet certain requirements, including being a resident of suburban Cook County, having a family income under 300% of the federal poverty guidelines and not being eligible for public

ams such as Medicaid and Mediapplication via mail.

Once an individual is approved and becomes a member of the network, they are assigned a local health provider. Participating health providers include Greater Family Health’s center in Franklin Park, PCC Community Wellness Center locations in Austin and Melrose Park, Adventist – LaGrange Family Medicine Center and Ghani Medical Center

‘Aging Well in Westchester’ group is back to ser ve seniors

Volunteer group hosts free seminars for seniors and families

A group created to support healthy, infor med and safe aging in Westchester held a seminar for seniors on July 12. It was the first of several events organized by the “Aging Well in Westchester” group, revived by newly elected trustee Gia Marie Benline.

“I am grateful to have this opportunity and I am motivated to bring even more resources to our aging community in our village,”

Benline said. “I couldn’t be more humbled and proud to be the ringleader of bringing it back.”

During her campaign, Benline heard the needs of numerous senior residents and their families.

“A lot of seniors expressed to me their concern and their desire for it, so much so that they would be visiting neighboring towns that offer resources like this one.”

Aging Well in Westchester organizes free information sessions covering relevant topics for seniors and their families. Topics include health and wellness, safety, stress management and aging at home The events serve as information hubs, where senior residents or family members can lear n about available resources for senior residents.

“It makes me overwhelmed with joy to have

our senior residents get in the know and get educated for resources that they are entitled to,” Benline said.

The group partners with Aging Care Connections, a not-for-profit agency that provides services to seniors in five Cook County suburban townships, to plan the community events

For its first seminar this year, Benline and a group of two volunteers featured a licensed physical therapist who shared practical tips to improve physical balance and reduce the risk of falls. They partnered with the local therapy office Impulse Rehab & Wellness

The local restaurant Duncan & Dada’s BBQ provided a free lunch to nearly 40 attendees

“They gave a wonderful presentation about steady-on-your-feet balance and the importance of movement,” she said. “As our resi-

dents are getting older, we are stressing the importance of aging well.”

In the upcoming months, the group will host two more information sessions. On Sept. 13, the local police and fire departments will share personal and home safety tips. “We’re really happy to collaborate with them,” she said.

These events are just a “steppingstone” of what the Aging Well in Westchester team looks to bring to senior residents in Westchester

“We also have an upcoming seminar about estate planning,” Benline said.

Residents are invited to join the Aging Well team.

“If any resident is interested in joining our Aging Well team, all power to them,” she said. “To me, the more the merrier.”

Blue Line renovations on Near West Side to increase travel times until October

CTA running shuttle buses, recommends using nearby el lines

Blue Line riders will face delays for the next 2 to 3 months as CTA rebuilds the easternmost section of the line’s Forest Park branch.

Blue Line between UIC-Halsted station and the Forest Park terminal, mostly running on the Eisenhower Expressway right of way with stations in Forest Park, Oak Park and Chicago’s West Side. “Slow zones” has been a major issue for the branch, which the track bed and drainage improvements will help address.

The Blue Line will operate in two segments, with one section running between Forest Park terminal and Illinois Medical District station, and another section running between Jackson/Dearborn station and the O’Hare terminal. For the first part of the project, CTA is running two free shuttle buses – a rush-hour only express bus that will run between Illinois Medical District and Jackson/Dearborn stations without stopping, and a re gular shuttle that will make stops near Racine, UIC-Halsted and Clinton stations’ entrances.

The Blue Line section between Illinois Medical District and LaSalle stations will be closed until late August, and about half of that – the section between Illinois Medical District and UIC-Halsted stations – will remain closed until at least early October. CTA is using shuttle buses to fill in the gap, but since, unlike CTA trains, CTA buses are mixed with re gular traffic, the overall trip will take longer. The station closure is part of a larger project to make 7 Forest Park branch stations more accessible to people with disabilities, while also improving drainage and replacing the track bed.

Forest Park branch is the section of the

As an alternative to the shuttles, CTA recommends taking the Pink and Green lines, which largely run parallel to the Forest Park branch. CTA and Pace buses connect all Blue Line stations to their equivalents on both lines, and Pink CTA Line’s Polk station is located within walking distance of Illinois Medical District’s Paulina Avenue entrance. Riders can also take the Union Pacific West Metra Line, which has stops in Oak Park and East Garfield Park, but that service is more expensive and less frequent.

After August, Clinton and UIC-Halsted stations will reopen, but the Clinton station will close until October. CTA will only run a local shuttle.
