More Proviso suburbs could legalize backyard chickens
Nor thlake voters will see ballot measure during Nov. 8 election

Broadview resident Jennifer Murtof f grew up surrounded by chickens. Her grandfather was a small-scale far mer who grew staples like corn, wheat and soybeans. He also had chickens and when they got sick, Jennifer would nur ture them back to health.
Years later, Murtof f no longer owns chickens of her own but she’s become a self-taught expert in animal husbandry and owns Home to Roost, which may be the only urban chicken consultancy in the Midwest.
“I live vicariously through other people’s chickens,” she said during a recent interview.
Murtof f is now at the center of a growing movement among city-dwellers to raise backyard chickens. People go to Murtof f for advice on keeping their hens and for persuading other people that having backyard hens isn’t as bad as it may appear on the surface.

Murtof f said she’s served as an expert witness at board meetings in a range of suburbs seeking to change their ordinances to allow backyard chicken keeping.

Tour de Proviso rolls into third year in Riverside
Organizers said over 450 people registered to par ticipate in the annual biking event founded by Broadview and Maywood elected officials in 2020
By SHANEL ROMAIN Staff Contributor
The third annual Tour de Proviso rolled through Riverside on Saturday for the first time since the event’s founding in 2020.
The Tour de Proviso is the brainchild of Maywood Trustee Miguel Jones and Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson. The elected officials said they wanted to promote outdoor recreation and community togetherness during the pandemic.
For its first two years, the biking event, which is a play on the worldfamous Tour de France, took place in Bellwood, Broadview and Maywood.
This year’s Tour de Proviso may have been the biggest one yet, with 450 re gistered riders.
Riverside Village President Joseph Ballerine said he participated in the Tour last year but this one is particularly special.
“I was honored to have been given this event this year by Mayor Katrina Thompson,” Ballerina said.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to bring our communities together,” he said. “I have a great working relationship with

The Westchester village board is poised to place street signs along Westchester Boulevard in honor of the suburb’s late mayor, Frank Perry, who died in December 2021 at 50.
“This is something that we spoke about back in January, that we wanted to put an honorary street sign on Westchester Boulevard in honor of our late mayor,” said Westchester Trustee Cathy Kuratko at a Committee of the Whole meeting on Sept. 27.
Kuratko said that Perry, who lived most of his life in Westchester, grew up on Westchester Boulevard and owned two businesses on the street – Joe’s Place Restaurant and Concetta’s Salon. He was also deeply involved in a range of social activities.
“He was a coach, a manager and a sponsor for Westchester Girls Softball for years and years,” Kuratko said. “He was a eucharistic minister at [Divine Infant Jesus Catholic Church], an usher and volunteered at numerous community events throughout the years. In addition to that, he served two years on the Westchester library board, where he was vice president and then went on to serve two-and-a-half ter ms as a trustee on the village board before being elected most recently to [the of fice of] mayor.”
Kuratko said Per ry “bled Westchester and loved this community.” She said that there are two honorary street signs being proposed for the intersections of Westchester and Roosevelt and Westchester and Canterbury
If the application process goes according to plan, the proposal will likely move to the village board’s next re gular

According to the Chicago Health Atlas, only 55% of Austin residents report having easy access to fresh fruits and ve getables An upcoming film and food event seeks to address that challenge.
Austin Eats, an initiative designed to expand access to fruits and ve getables and rewrite the nar rative around food in Austin, and Austin Coming Together will screen two short documentaries that tell food stories on the West and South sides. The organizations are collaborating with the “As We Are Planted” and “Feed ‘Em All’ will screen on Friday, Oct. 7, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the By The Hand Club for Kids,

and shotguns gar nering $50 gift cards, handguns ear ning $100 gift cards and automatic firear ms ear ning $200 gift cards
Rivera said they gave the cards in exchange for the guns “no questions asked.”
Maywood Police Chief Elijah Willis said this was the first gun buyback event since he was appointed chief last year He said the gift cards were funded through $5,000 that come from the department’s asset forfeiture account.
“This is the first one we’ve done without taxpayer dollars,” Willis said Saturday after noon. “Anything we can do to get guns of f the street, we should do it.”

So far this year, there have been at least eight homicides in Maywood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s of fice. All of them involved firear ms
The most recent homicide was on Sept. 16, when a 17-year-old was fatally shot on the 600 block of South 18th Ave. The teenager died two days later, the medical examiner reported.
Willis said he intends to do more outreach events like Saturday’s gun buyback in order to leverage citizens as part of the department’s ef for ts to reduce crime.
“Even though we are on the frontlines, it’s not just us,” the chief said. “Citizens keep us infor med and involved. They tell us about certain things and keep us working. Thankfully, overall crime is down all around us, which is a good thing.”
Bellwood-based breast cancer awareness nonprofit to hold first fundraiser
Pink Divas and Gents, the breast cancer awareness nonprofit founded by Bellwood Village Clerk Janel Moreland has been expanding beyond the village of its birth over the last several years. Now, the nonprofit is planning a major fundraiser that will be held Oct. 22, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., at the Chicago Mariott Oak Brook, 1401 22nd St. in Oak Brook.
The fundraiser, called Boots and Bowties, costs $75 a ticket and $600 for a table of eight people. The world-renowned line dancing producer, singer and songwriter
Big Mucci will perfor m and DJ Woodhouse will provide the entertainment.
“This is our very first fundraiser,” said Moreland. “We’d been planning it since 2019 but COVID-19 happened. Now, we’re

finally able to do it.”
Moreland founded Pink Divas and Gents in 2019. Since 2018, she’s hosted an annual breast cancer awareness run/walk. She said the nonprofit has since evolved beyond the village borders and established a presence in dif ferent west suburban communities This year’s run/walk was held at Triton Colle ge in River Grove in June
“I’ve always presented in school about breast cancer and when I worked at Pan American Bank, I would always hold some type of awareness event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October,” Moreland said. “When I became clerk, I wanted to do something similar.”

Pipeline Health declares bankruptcy, continues to negotiate sale
Pipeline Health, the for mer owner of the defunct Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park and current owner of West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 3 in the Souther n District of Texas

For months Pipeline has been ne gotiating the sale of both West Sub and Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago to a newly for med venture called Resilience Health.
The failure to close on that sale by Aug. 30 at a ne gotiated price of $92 million for the real estate involved was a critical factor in the bankruptcy declaration, according to a 53-page statement to the court. The statement was submitted by Russell Perry, who was identified as Pipeline’s chief transfor mation of ficer He took on that role on Aug. 24, 2022.
In his statement, Per ry said the sevenhospital group operating in California, Texas and Illinois was financially undercut by ongoing losses at West Sub and Weiss. In the 12 months ending this August, Per ry reported the two Illinois properties had a combined loss of $69.7 million. The statement said the five other hospitals in the group had been financially propping up West Sub and Weiss pending their sale.
In a statement from Pipeline of ficials on Monday, Jane Brust, a spokesperson, said all of Pipeline’s hospitals and other medical facilities will continue to operate nor mally under bankruptcy protection. Pipeline also said it is continuing to
ne gotiate with Resilience health but will also potentially seek other buyers for its properties

Judge approves Google class-ac tion lawsuit settlement for Illinois residents
[By NBC Chicago] An Illinois judge this week approved a multi-million dollar settlement in a class-action lawsuit involving Google.
The $100 million settlement, which was pre-approved in the spring, was given final approval by Cook County Judge Anna Loftus during a hearing Wednesday.
The lawsuit, which mirrors one recently settled with Facebook that resulted in many residents receiving checks worth nearly $400 this year, claimed the company violated the Illinois Biometric Infor mation Privacy Act by “collecting and storing biometric data of individuals who, while residing in Illinois, appeared in a photograph in the photograph sharing and storage service known as Google Photos, without proper notice and consent.”

A settlement ag reement was reached in the case earlier this year and eligible residents had until last weekend to file their claims Google did not respond to NBC 5’s request for comment, but did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement ag reement and denied all claims made in the lawsuit.
According to the settlement website, residents are eligible “if, at any time between May 1, 2015 and April 25, 2022, you appeared in a photograph in Google Photos while you were an Illinois resident.”
Eligible residents had to submit a claim by Sept. 24.
For those wishing to object or exclude themselves from the settlement, that deadline was Aug. 10.
Those who are eligible will receive a portion of the $100 million settlement fund, after court fees, costs and expenses are deducted.
Under the settlement approval, each of the five plaintiffs named in the lawsuit will get $5,000 and attor neys in the case will split $35 million in fees and costs incur red over the course of the case.
In Northlak cia addresses border crisis
Garcia and Rep. Katherine Clark, the assistant Speaker of the House, joined Nor thlake Mayor Sher win to talk issues at Sept. 26 meeting
By MICHAEL ROMAIN EditorMig rants sent from Republican border states to cities like Chicago, reproductive rights, af fordable housing, property taxes and crime were top of mind for community members who attended a Sept. 26 Federal Update Town Hall in Northlake. Garcia’ district spans parts of Northlake and Melrose Park
The event was hosted by Cong ressman Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D-4th) at Northlake City Hall, 55 E. North Ave. in Northlake.
Cong resswoman Katherine Clark (D-MA 5th), the assistant speaker of the House of Representatives, and Northlake Mayor Jeffrey T. Sherwin joined Rep. Garcia on the three-person panel.
With the Nov. 8 midter m elections roughly a month away, the two cong resspeople touted a raft of major le gislation recently passed by the Democrat-controlled House and Senate
The le gislation includes the CARES Act, which gave municipalities billions in federal relief during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with “three massive, unprecedented pieces of le gislation to invest in long-ter m economic development,” Rep. Garcia said.
Those laws include the $550 billion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which the cong ressman said is the “largest federal investment for transportation and infrastructure since the New Deal.” He said that the bill would specifically benefit Northlake by providing funding to replace sanitary sewer lines and increasing broadband access
The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act puts $280 billion into the domestic production of semiconductors that power everything from electric vehicles to smartphones. The le gislation, which President Joe Biden signed into law in August, comes as the U.S. confronts China
over Taiwan, the country that produces the most semiconductors in the world.
“This is not only great for good-paying jobs, it is a priority national security issue,” said Rep. Clark. “We have to be making chips here.”
Clark said the CHIPS Act will invest $10 billion into re gional technology and innovation hubs, “one of which will be cited in the Midwest.”
The cong resspeople also referenced the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes the most comprehensive ar ray of climate change-related investments in U.S. history and caps out-of-pocket drug costs for senior citizens at $2,000 a year by 2026, among other key provisions.
In addition to touting le gislation, the lawmakers also addressed the thousands of migrants who recently ar rived on buses in cities like Chicago and Los Angeles after they were sent by the Republican gover nors of states like Texas, F lorida and Arizona.
Rep. Garcia said he recently visited a center in Chicago where some of those mig rants have been received. The cong ressman said the gover nors have promised the migrants they would be welcomed, fed, housed and employed when they ar rive in the cities
“Those were false pretenses for the most part because the truth is when they send people of f, they do not give a courtesy call to the mayors who are then saddled with
that situation,” Garcia said.
“These are individuals who have been admitted into the country by Customs and Border patrol, so they are here under the color of law,” he added.
The cong ressman, a longtime immigration advocate who himself migrated from Mexico, said the current mig rant crisis is the result of the country’s failure to reform the immigration system. Over a third of people in Garcia’s 4th District are foreign-bo rn, the cong ressman’s of fice has said.
Garcia said the Senate should pass le gislation that’s been languishing in the House that would implement “compassionate” refor ms to the immigration system that would put many immig rants to work.
“Far mers all over the country are be gging for additional help and for employees,” he said.
Garcia said there hasn’t been comprehensive immigration reform since 1986. He said he supports the proposed Farm Workforce Moder nization Act, which would be the first le gislation of its kind since the last comprehensive immigration reform law during Re gan’s presidency.
Community members in attendance at the town hall also wanted to know the federal lawmakers’ on reproductive rights, which the Supreme Court recently repealed after overtur ning Roe v. Wade earlier this year.
SHANEL ROMAIN/Staff PhotographerCongresswoman Katherine Clark (D-MA 5th), the assistant speaker of the House of Representatives, speaks during the Sept. 26 Federal Update Tow n Hall hosted by Congressman Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D-4th), far right, and Northlake Mayor Je rey T. Sherwin.

“When we have a gover nment that is placing your decision in accordance with our medical doctor, your family needs and our faith with politicians in Washington if they roll back that freedom, they are just getting star ted,” said Clark.
In the area of crime, Garcia, a mer Cook County commissioner and Illinois state senator, sought to correct inaccuracies spread perhaps most notably by Republican gubernatorial candidate Dar ren Bailey about the SAFE-T Act, which takes ef fect Jan. 1, 2023.
“It does create a system that prioritizes an of fender’s risk to public safety instead of their ability to pay their way out,” Garcia said. “Someone who commits a crime who is wealthy can pay cash bond and get out. Somebody who doesn’t can’t. That’s not fair.”
One person in attendance during the town hall wanted to know what residents can do to “stop Cook County from raising our property taxes.”
Mayor Sherwin clarified that the county is not the main entity responsible for raising property taxes
“Cook County is only responsible for one small line item on your tax bill,” the mayor said. “The tax bill is made up of tax levies from various local gover nments — the school districts, the park districts, the city and so for th. When each one of those districts raises its taxes, it adds to the cumulative ef fect. The county just calculates the cumulative amounts and puts the bill out.”
Sherwin said “20% of taxing bodies that represent the schools are responsible for almost 70%” of the average tax bill.
“The first thing to do is to go to the school boards and find out how they’re spending your money,” the mayor said.
CHICKENS Bans li ing?
located in the Village Free Press readership area — Berkeley, Melrose Park— allo backyard chicken keeping. The suburbs of Bellwood, Broadview, Hillside, Mayw Northlake and Stone Park all prohibit activity
Recently, however, there’s been a p among residents across Proviso Township to get rid of the local bans on chicken keeping. In Forest Park, village commissioner Maria Maxham will host a public hearing on Oct. 18, 7 p.m., at Forest Park Village Hall, 517 Des Plaines Ave. in Forest Park The hearing is designed to gauge residents’ opinions about a potential ordinance that would lift the suburb’s backyard chicken ban.
And in August, Northlake’s village board voted to allow an advisory referendum on backyard chickens to appear on the ballot during the Nov. 8 election. Voters in the suburb will be asked if backyard chicken keeping should be allowed in Northlake.

“It’s been a recurring theme for the last couple of years,” said Northlake Mayor Jeffrey T. Sherwin.
The mayor said if voters say ‘yes’ to backyard chicken keeping, then the “next step will be to figure out how to implement it,” adding that “there would be costs associated with” creating the new ordinance and enforcing it
Northlake resident Jennifer Nieves said she has been pushing for the city to legalize backyard chicken keeping since realizing several years ago that the practice was banned
“I approached the village professionally and with facts and I approached them with actual scientific reasons that people have found for having backyard chickens,” she said.
Nieves, a gardener, beekeeper and environmental sustainability advocate, said she’s also initiated conversations on Facebook about backyard chicken keeping to get a sense of how Northlake residents feel about the practice.
She’s also written an article for Northlake’s newsletter outlining the pros and cons of the practice, and brought supporters with her to town hall meetings.
Nieves said she wants to raise backyard chickens because they lay eggs that are of much higher quality than the factoryfarmed eggs sold at grocery stores She

Laura Hunnewell’s family is raising in Oak Park, where backyard chicken keep ing is allowed. Northlake and Forest Park are now considering the possibility of li ing their bans on the practice.
said backyard chickens also help manage food scraps, reducing waste She added that chicken manure, which is high in nitrogen, can be added to compost, enhancing soil health critical for her garden.
Micaela Soto, a Maywood resident, wants to raise chickens in her backyard for similar reasons. Last year, she launched an online petition in favor of the practice that garnered 196 signatures
“Maywood is a food desert,” Soto said. “I have a garden and I have started looking into having chickens as a source of eggs.”
Nieves and Soto said they know that there are multiple homeowners in Northlake and Maywood, respectively, who are already quietly raising backyard hens despite the local bans in those suburbs
“I want there to be an ordinance so that it’s monitored and done currently,” Soto said.
“We can limit the number of chickens we have.”
Murtoff said she spends much of her time educating people about the realities of humanely raising backyard chickens. She said anyone considering doing so should expect to work every day tending to the chickens. She added that building a quality chicken coop and purchasing high-quality feed can get pretty pricey.
Murtoff estimated that solidly built chicken coops (not the prefabricated ones that risk breaking down in a few years) can
run upwards of $1,500. And a 50-pound bag of chicken feed can range from around $15 to $50.
A flock of two to four chickens would probably require one 50-pound bag of feed every two to three months, Murtoff said.
Buying a solid coop and good feed can come in handy when preventing issues like predators and sickness
Laura Hunnewell has been raising chickens in nearby Oak Park, where the practice is legal, for several years. She said over the years, she’s lost a few chickens to foxes.
Now, her two-story backyard coop, equipped with heaters on top for warmth during the winter, is reinforced with a solid electric door that is foolproof She and her husband have also installed a surveillance system near the coop that allows them to monitor their hens’ activity while they’re away
Hunnewell said she started raising backyard chickens as a coping mechanism for one of her children, for whom the chickens are therapeutic.
“I was not into the idea of having chickens, but now I think they’re awesome,” Hunnewell said. “They’re too funny. They have their own personalities.”
Hunnewell said she leaned on Murtoff’s
ealth of knowledge when one of her hens sick. Murtoff advised the Hunnewells take the hen to an avian veterinarian and bring the hen into their home so that the sickness doesn’t spread to the other hens in the flock.
“That hen is still alive to this day,” Hunnewell said. “That was maybe three ears ago.”
Murtoff said she often finds herself ddressing misinformation about backyard chickens
r instance, some opponents of the practice believe raising backyard chickens increase the risk of avian flu, attract rodents and odors, and only irk the neighbors with their loud noises
The risk of avian flu, which is a viral disease that affects wild, captive and domestic birds — including backyard chickens — is real. While avian flu infections in people are incredibly rare, the disease can be very contagious among birds
But Murtoff said the probability of backyard chickens catching avian flu is pretty small.
“Probably the things people should be most concerned about, and even this is a very small concern, is bacteria like E. coli and salmonella,” she said.
People who raise birds can dramatically reduce the potential spread of those bacteria by washing their hands after visiting the chicken coop and before eating Noise is also a real issue but Murtoff said chickens aren’t much noisier than dogs

As with all pets, noise must be mitigated Roosters, she said, are another story.
“You don’t want to keep a rooster if your neighbors are noise-sensitive,” she said. “So, I generally don’t recommend them even though they are very good for the chicken flock as a whole because they protect the hens.”
Murtoff said most people’s negative perceptions of backyard chickens actually stem from the very real harms done by industrial chicken farms, which are, in fact, very smelly and potentially rife with disease
“I grew up near industrial agriculture chicken farms and, yes, they smell so bad because there can be as many as 600,000 birds trapped in a large barn,” she said. “There are high concentrations of droppings and ammonia but that is an industrial chicken operation. If you have two to three chickens in a backyard, you won’t notice anything.”
Birria craze lands in Berkeley with taco truc
Tacos El Amigazo, the only food truck in the village, sells unique birria ramen dish along with standard Mexican fare
By MICHAEL ROMAIN EditorBirria, which is a popular steamed meat dish, is all the rage across the country.
“On Instagram, there’s a collective fetishization of cheese pulls in extreme close-ups, and images of tacos half-dipped in Styrofoam cups of meaty broth,” the New York Times re ported last year.
“The parade of magnificent, bonkers mash-ups is endless — birria waffles, birria pizza, birria fries, birria pho, birria tortellini,” the paper added.
Now, the birria craze has landed in Berkeley. At a meeting on Aug. 16, the village board approved a license ag reement that allows Tacos El Amigazo to sell its popular Mexican cuisine on a vacant
village-owned lot at 5544 St. Charles Rd. in Berkeley.
Rudy Espiritu, Berkeley administrator, said Tacos El Amigazo is the only food truck that operates on owned land and the only one he’s aware of in operation in the village

The food truck features a range of the standard Mexican dishes, including bur ritos, quesadilla, tacos and tostadas. But what makes Tacos El Amigazo a rarity among taco establishments is that it serves birria.
Birria, which originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco, is traditionally or beef slow-stewed in a pot, as opposed to barbacoa, which is cooked underground.
Village Free Press trekked over to Tacos El Amigazo to taste its birria taco, which was as melt-in-your-mouth as advertised and topped with grilled onions, cilantro, sour cream, jalapeño pepper and sauce.
In addition to the birria taco, the food truck may be the only place foodies in Proviso Township can eat birria ramen.
Tacos El Amigazo is open daily, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Bonchon fried chicken chain coming to Melrose Park
A popular Korean friend chicken restaurant concept that has over 115 locations in the United States is coming to Melrose Park, the restaurant industry publication QSR reported on Sept. 29.
The publication said representatives with Bonchon announced on Sept. 29 that they had signed a lease to open a 2,800-squarefoot location at 800 W. North Ave. inside of Winston Plaza shopping center
Bonchon is known for their hand-battered, double-fried Korean fried chicken. QSR reported that Chicago-based entrepreneurs Suleman Merchant and Sadaf Siddiqui are spearheading the effort.
“Chicagoland has already shown it loves Bonchon, so we’re confident that the new Melrose Park location will become a mealtime destination for even more local
residents,” Greg Buchanan, chief administrative officer at Bonchon.
“Continuing to add talented operators like Suleman and Sadaf to the Bonchon family is at the core of our growth as we tap into more communities that crave our delicious Korean food. With more restaurant operators joining the Crunch Out Loud movement every day, demand for Bonchon continues to be at an all-time high.”
The Melrose Park location would be the first location in Proviso Township and the eighth in Illinois. The chain also has stores in Skokie and Aurora, among other places. The store has more than 385 units around the world.
So far, it’s no clear when the restaurant will open.
Ferrara Candy faces $201K
fine for alleged safety violations
The series of alleged violations occurred at company’s Bellwood plant
By MICHAEL ROMAIN EditorFerrara Candy Company is facing a $201,000 fine after the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently issued citations for a series of safety violations at its plant located at 3000 Washington Blvd. in Bellwood.
The labor department announced Sept. 28 that OSHA had issued citations to Ferrara for “one re peat violation and four serious safety violations, with proposed penalties of $301,379,” after responding to an April 4 complaint of unsafe working conditions.
“OSHA inspectors found workers
exposed to amputation hazards because the company failed to utilize energy control procedures – such as lockout/tagout –before workers cleared jams and serviced equipment,” labor department officials stated.
OSHA also cited Ferrara for “not providing access to an eyewash station for allowing workers to operate powered industrial vehicles while in disrepair.”
Based in Chicago, Ferrara Candy produces confectionary products like Lemonhead candy and Red Hots.
The labor department said Ferrara has 15 business days from the receipt of the citations and penalties to “comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.”
Ferrara Candy officials could not be reached immediately for comment on Wednesday evening.

Under Illinois law, the Cook County Treasurer’s Office must offer properties having delinquent real estate taxes and special assessments for sale. IF YOUR PROPERTY IS LISTED IN THIS NOTICE FOR SALE OF DELINQUENT REAL ESTATE TAXES, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO TAKE ACTION SO THAT YOUR TAXES ARE NOT SOLD. The tax sale is scheduled to begin TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022. The sale of taxes will result in a lien against the property that will add, at a minimum, hundreds of dollars in fees to the amount currently due. Sale of the tax and continued failure by the owner to redeem (pay) may result in the owner’s loss of legal title to the property.
Prior to sale, delinquent taxes may be paid online from your bank account or credit card by visiting cookcountytreasurer.com. Personal, company, and business checks will be accepted only through October 27, 2022. After October 27, 2022, all payments must be made by certified check, cashier’s check, money order, cash, or credit card. Please note that under Illinois law, the Treasurer’s Office cannot accept payments of delinquent taxes tendered after the close of the business day immediately preceding the date on which such taxes are to be offered for sale. For questions about submitting a payment or to verify the precise delinquent amount, you may contact the Cook County Treasurer’s Office by phone at (312) 443-5100 or by e-mail through our website at www.cookcountytreasurer.com (click on “CONTACT US BY EMAIL”).

COOK COUNTY DELINQUENT REAL ESTATE TAX LIST
OFFICE OF THE TREASURER AND EX-OFFICIO COLLECTOR OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS.
Advertisement and Notice by Collector of Cook County of Application for Judgment and Order of Sale of Delinquent Lands and Lots for General Taxes for the years indicated, for order of sales thereof, as provided by law.
COUNTY OF COOK, STATE OF ILLINOIS
October 5-6, 2022
NOTICE is hereby given that the said Collector of Cook County, Illinois, will apply to the County Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois on Friday, October 21, 2022, for judgment against all lands and lots, hereinafter described as being delinquent, upon which taxes (together with any accrued interest and costs) remain due and unpaid, for an order for sale of said lands and lots for satisfaction thereof, fixing the correct amount due. Final entry of said order will be sought on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.
NOTICE is further given that beginning on the 15th day of November, 2022, A.D., at the hour of 8:30 A.M., all said lands and lots, hereinafter described for sale for which an order shall be made, or has been made and not executed as noted, will be subject to pub-
lic sale at 118 N. Clark St, Room 112 (Randolph Street entrance), in Chicago, Illinois, for the amount of taxes, interest and costs due thereon, respectively.
The following is a list of the delinquent properties in Cook County upon which the taxes or any part thereof for the 2020 tax year remain due and unpaid; the name(s) of the owners, if known; the property location; the total amount due on 2020 tax warrants (excluding delinquent special assessments separately advertised); and the year or years for which the taxes are due.
In lieu of legal description, each parcel of land or lot is designated by a property index number (PIN). Comparison of the 14-digit PIN with the legal description of any parcel may be made by referring to the cross-indices in the various Cook County offices.
The Cook County Collector does not guarantee the accuracy of common street addresses or property classification codes at the time of sale. Tax buyers should verify all common street addresses, PINs, classifications, and ownership by personal inspection and investigation of said properties and legal descriptions prior to purchasing general taxes offered at the sale.
NO TAX BUYER WILL BE PERMITTED TO OBTAIN A TAX DEED WITH RESPECT TO ANY PROPERTY OWNED BY A TAXING DISTRICT OR OTHER UNIT OF GOVERNMENT.
WHEN AN ORDER TO VACATE THE TAX SALE OF ANY SUCH PROPERTY IS ENTERED, THE FINAL RESULT MAY BE A REFUND WITHOUT INTEREST.

Lindop outlines renovation plans, seeks board member

Construction projects now planned after voters OK’d a $6.5M bond measure
By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Lindop School District 92 in Broadview has outlined a range of proposed construction projects that officials are planning now that voters approved a $6.5 million bond debt extension in June. Voters in Broadview approved the measure 63% to 37%.
The district plans to implement a range of life-safety improvements, such as replacing most of the roof on the district’s only school facility at 2400 18th Ave. in Broadview. They also plan to fix mechanical issues, upgrade the electric system, renovate the student library and repair masonry.
“We are deeply grateful to Broadview voters of Lindop School District 92 for their generous support giving the district

the means to provide students a safer and richer learning environment,” said Lindop 92 Superintendent Dr. Janiece Jackson.
“Additionally, the extension the district bond debt authority will cause no increase in property taxes. Zero. That’s a win for taxpayers.”
Jackson said the district’s Life Safety Report identified $10.9 million worth of building repair needs, but the administration and the board whittled the list down to the most important needs.
“The Board and the administration diligently examined the Life Safety Report recommendations over many months,” said Dr. Jackson. “And after reviewing critically all options with the district’s financial consultants, we decided on the $6.5 million debt extension financing option to reduce any potential burden to tax payers.”
The top life-safety projects include:
■ Replacing 70% of Lindop School’s roof: $1,575,000
■ Repairing electrical systems: $820,000.00

■ Repairing mechanical system: $477,000
■ Restoring exterior wall masonry: $252,400
■ Upgrading other life-safety features: $1,000,000
District officials will also invest $1.2 million to renovate the school’s 4,000-square-foot student library.
“Lindop’s current library will be modernized for the 21st Century and will become the centerpiece of the school,” Dr. Jackson said. “This library transformation will create a dynamic, attractive, and technologically sophisticated learning environment for the district’s 360 students, which will have a direct impact on the quality of their education and academic success.”
Scott Beranek, Lindop’s chief school business official, estimated that the first projects could start in the summer of 2023, with all of the projects completed in the next two to five years.

“We were glad to come to Riverside and participate,” he said. “It was a wonderful event. It brings people together and gives them an opportunity to enjoy the neighborhood and weather.”

Radical Botanicals on Madison offers care for sick plants
The new Forest Park plant store has mission to ‘create pockets of sanity and divinity in the community’

The first thing one notices about the plant store that opened two months ago at 7607 Madison St. is the sheer size and variety of plants visible through the storefront window.
“I literally get a crowd of people just taking front of my window and breathing,” said co-o Guer rero.
That is precisely what she and her partner, Ro wanted to see when they opened Radical Botanical. wanted to do more than just sell plants and heal As the name suggests, they saw a store as an help their customers, mentally and spirituall them closer to nature. Even before they opened location, they got a positive response
Guer rero and Ungaro said they became interested in growing plants before they met each other, for their own, separate reasons Guer rero said she’s been interested in plants since she was a child. About six years ago, she started out growing a rose bush, and she soon became interested in the farm-to-table movement.

Living in a “tiny Cicero apartment,” she be gan growing a few herbs, and bought books on plant-growing at Half Price Books to get better at it. And while she sold some herbs and ve getables around the neighborhood and at her daughter’s school, she didn’t think about tur ning it into business until she met Ungaro.
Ungaro said he got into growing plants while working
proved to be therapeutic, because it gives veterans “something to take home and take care instead of just themselves.”
But it wasn’t until after the two met that they thought about starting a business that would allow them to share the benefits they get from plants with the community.
“The overall mission is to create pockets of sanity and divinity in the community, in their house,” Guer rero said. “For them to have a resting place, to kind of ease the mind in the spirit when all the [craziness] is going on. We live in the concrete jungle, instead of a natural place.”
While the “botanical” part of the name was self-evident, she said that the “radical” part reflected the “radical idea” people could come to nature for healing. While she said she doesn’t want to disparage medical scienc e, it shouldn’t be the only source of treatment.
A physical location at the River Forest/Forest Park border made sense, since Guer rero grew up in the wester n suburbs and their daughter attended a school in River Forest.
“I got back, joined the American Le gion down the street and decided that it’s the neighborhood where wanted to open my plant shop with my queen,” Ungaro said.

Radical Botanical also of fers classes where kids lear n about the plant growth cycles and how to take care of them, mostly through hands-on lear ning –something that she said was inspired by her lear ning about plants from her grandmothers and passing that knowledge on to her daughter Each class lasts around an hour
“There’s no test, so don’t wor ry about that,” Ungaro added. “It’s just a simple 5-10 minute [lesson on] how the plant will grow in the future, and then they literally push it into the ground itself.”
Guer rero said they didn’t want customers to feel pressured to buy something, preferring instead to work with them and find the plant that’s right for them.
She also said she likes to see customers stay in touch.
“I don’t like when people just buy a plant and take it home,” Guer rero said. “If I was working at Home Depot, God forbid, and if they did not come back and tell me how the plant is doing, I’d be upset.”
