Moroney urges ‘defund police’ ballot referendum

Called ‘political stunt,’‘charade’

Dan Moroney, Oak Park village president candidate and current village trustee, has requested the village board consider an advisory referendum question for the April 6 municipal election ballot asking Oak Park residents if they want to “defund” the police department.

Moroney said his intention was to use the referendum as a litmus test to determine residents’ appetite to defund police while other elected officials criticized the move as a political stunt.

Moroney posed the request in an email sent Jan. 6 to the village board, phrasing the referendum question as, “Shall the Village of Oak Park defund its police department.”

He asked that the resolution be voted on at the board’s next meeting scheduled for Jan. 19 – the last day local government boards can add referendum questions to the ballot. Wednesday Journal obtained the email through a Freedom of Information request.

The timing and nature of the request have aroused suspicion in a handful of Moroney’s village board peers, who view it as a tactic employed by Moroney to garner support for his campaign for village president.

Welch in consideration for Illinois House Speaker Rep. Emanuel “Chris”Welch has secured support from Illinois Black Caucus

Multiple media sources are reporting that state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th) is now in the mix as a possible successor to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who suspended his campaign for House Speaker of the 102nd General Assembly on Jan. 11.

Since last year, Madigan has been at the center of an ongoing Commonwealth Edison bribery scandal. Several ComEd executives have been charged with giving Madigan-connected people patronage jobs and internships in exchange for the House Speaker’s legislative support.

Madigan has not been charged with wrongdoing.

The scandal prompted the Illinois House to convene a Special Investigating Committee that Welch chaired. The committee ended in December, but left Madigan at his most vulnerable point in his nearly 40 years as speaker. Madigan is the longest serving leader of any state or federal legislative body in the country.

According to a recent Capitol News Service report, Madigan released a statement clarifying that his suspended campaign “is not a withdrawal,” adding that “I have said many times in the past, I have always put the best interest of the House Democratic Caucus and our members first. The House Democratic Caucus can work to find someone, other than me, to get 60 votes for Speaker.”

is indicative of the uphill battle Madigan’s challengers will have to climb – they will need 60 votes, or 42 more than any challenger appeared to have Sunday night,” Capitol News Illinois reported.

The House speaker is selected by members of the House and may receive votes from members of either the Republican or Democratic parties. In the 102nd General Assembly, there are 73 Democrats and 45 Republicans. Typically, however, a speaker gets votes from members of his or her own party.

“In the first closed-door unofficial ballot conducted between Democrats in a private room at the Bank of Springfield Center on Sunday night, Madigan received 51 votes, according to several reports confirmed by Capitol News Illinois.”

Madigan had the endorsement of both the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus and Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus. Rep. Ann Williams of Chicago was the second-highest vote-getter in the closed-door meeting, with 18 votes.

But by Monday night, multiple media sources were reporting that the tide was turning and Welch had secured the unanimous endorsement of the Black Caucus.

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Rachel Hinton tweeted on Monday night that, in addition to the backing of the Black Caucus, Welch also had the backing of Madigan. She later tweeted that a Madigan spokesman said the House Speaker isn’t “taking any position on any of the candidates who’ve either been announced or whose names have been mentioned in the media.”

Tony Arnold, a reporter for WBEZ, reported that a Black Caucus member who previously broke from the Caucus by refusing to endorse Madigan told WBEZ that he is “proudly” part of the Welch endorsement.

Welch, whose district spans parts of River Forest, could not be reached on Monday night for comment, but the representative released a statement on Tuesday.

“I am honored to be called upon my [sic] colleagues from the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus to put my name in for consideration,” Welch stated. “This historic moment in Illinois and across the country calls for new representation and unity of democratic beliefs. I want to thank Speaker Madigan for his leadership -- it has been a challenging year for us all but I am grateful for his commitment to serving the public.”

If Welch is chosen as speaker, he would

be the first Black person to serve in the position in the state’s history and the second politician from the west suburbs to reach the pinnacle of state politics. Last year, Oak Park resident Sen. Don Harmon assumed the position of Illinois Senate President by narrowly defeating Maywood resident Sen. Kimberly Lightford, whose district also includes parts of Oak Park.

An attorney by profession, Welch was first elected to the General Assembly in 2013, after narrowly defeating current Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins for the seat.

Prior to that point, he served as president of the Proviso Township District 209 Board of Education for roughly a decade.

Oak Park and River Forest see hike in COVID-19 cases Villages combine for 185 new cases

Oak Park continued to see a steady number of COVID-19 cases amongst its residents, as 143 new cases were reported from Jan. 6-11, according to the Oak Park Department of Public Health. The age of those who recently contracted the novel coronavirus range from “less than 20 into their 90s,” according to the village’s bulletin.

After seeing a slight dip in positive cases in recent weeks, Oak Park is now averaging over 20 new cases a day, according to Northwestern University’s COVID-19 database. Its rolling 7-day positivity rate is now up to 7.47 percent after

being as low as 5.34 percent on Jan. 4.

River Forest had one of its worst week’s dealing with COVID-19, as 42 residents tested positive from Jan. 5-11. For the first time since Dec. 8, the village is averaging over five new cases a day (5.7). Its rolling 14-day positivity rate has risen to 10.55 percent.

As positive COVID-19 cases in both villages continue to rise, Oak Park saw another resident, an 87-year-old woman, die this past week. According to the village, she was a resident at Belmont Village of Oak Park, an assisted living facility at 1035 Madison St. With the latest fatality, 48 Oak Park residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19.

Since the village started reporting the state of local longterm care facilities back in March, Belmont has had 29 resident and 31 staff COVID-19 cases at its facility. Eight of their

residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19.

As for other long-term care facilities in Oak Park, Berkeley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center has had 47 resident and 15 staff COVID-19 cases while 11 residents have died.

Brookdale Oak Park has had 11 resident cases and two resident deaths. Another Brookdale staff member tested positive this week, marking 24 staff cases. Oak Park Arms has had one resident fatality and five staff cases. Over this past week, two residents tested positive for COVID-19, which brings Oak Park Arms’ total of resident cases to 13. Oasis of Oak Park has had 12 resident fatalities and 12 staff cases. It also had one new resident case this past week, bringing the total number of positive cases to 24.

According to Natalia Derevyanny, Cook County’s director of communications, 8,601 people in the county have died after contracting COVID-19.

Singer makes the most of his time back home

ith the wind at his back, singer Joe Viba sails into 2021 with his first solo album and is part of a musical-theater release that got widely noticed, garnering an estimated 3.5 million listens to date.

His passion for performance developed during his days at Oak Park and River Forest High School. Viba lived in Oak Park from fifth through 12th grades, attending Irving Elementary and Julian Middle School.

One of his best friends, John Clay III, whom he met at OPRF, motivated Viba “to pursue music and theater and the whole creative arts industry,” he said.

“I was inspired by his work ethic and the things he could create so I thought, why not indulge?” Viba said.

Clay currently has a career in acting and appeared on Broadway in Choir Boy in 2019. He also appeared in two productions of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass at Ravinia.

At OPRF, Viba participated in Show Choir, A cappella Choir and spring musicals. He found the results — such as performing with Show Choir downtown and getting on the news — awe-inspiring. He said it showed the “energy you put into something you love can turn into something else if you take the time to really put forth a genuine effort.”

He also credits his family for bringing song into his life at an early age.

“My whole family sings — my sisters and brothers and my mom — so I watched them sing around the house,” Viba said. “You go to church a couple Sundays; you learn a hymn; you sing just causally every now and then,” that was the home he grew up in.

After graduating high school in 2013, it took some time before he became motivated by academics, which Viba said he realized was necessary to advance a career in “everything he became so fond of.” While going to college, he worked professionally in regional theater. From there, he landed contracts to perform on cruise ships in Broadway-style shows, such as Rock of Ages, or in “production shows” with others.

Viba also had a short stint singing opera.

The lifestyle brought steady work, the opportunity to see the world, and more experience and opportunities. Con-

tracts could last six months, and when he started, he was only home for five days between contracts.

When COVID-19 arrived, Viba had been at sea performing since November 2019. His gig ended suddenly in March 2020.

Upon arriving in the U.S., he and others from the ship were quarantined for two weeks and then flown home.

However, he already had a project in the making. Between cruise jobs, Viba had been living in Brooklyn, New York, for a year with Clay. Looking for work, he tried for “everything” during that time and landed a singing part for the Original Concept Recording of Starry, a musical about Theo and Vincent Van Gogh.

But it was more than talent that helped get him in the door. He had a Van Gogh painting as his Facebook cover art and posted about listening to Lianne La Havas, who recorded “Starry Starry Night” for the Loving Vincent movie. Viba said when the team saw this they thought, “He really does enjoy the work of Vincent Van Gogh. Let’s listen to him and talk to him and see what he can do.”

Viba sings on nine of the tracks on the original release.

Matt Dahan is the composer/lyricist and Kelly Lynne D’Angelo is the book writer/lyricist. When Starry was released in January 2020, it got 1 million listens on Spotify that month alone, according to Broadway World. By February, it was on iTunes Pop Chart at #14. In November, a deluxe version with three more songs and a CD was released. It is still getting 600 to 700 streams per day, he said.

Still grounded from his cruise career, he is looking at the bright side.

“Coronavirus has provided a really good opportunity to research,” Viba said. “When you’re on a ship, the accessibility to knowledge … about music production, marketing and engineering is limited because of the quality of the Wi-Fi in any given day.

Having reliable, accessible Wi-Fi on land, and having less to do during COVID (“No parties!”) has given Viba “the perfect opportunity to learn something.”

He began working on his solo album, influenced by living on the water. Viba not only sings, he composed, mixed and produced Flora & Fauna. The album, with its neo-soul and R&B sound, was released on Dec. 25. It is currently getting 80 downloads a day, but as he works on marketing, he hopes to increase that number. He now has a music manager to

Viba said he completed Flora & Fauna in three months and is now working on other projects — a rock song inspired by the November election campaign, another with a singer who is based in the UK that he met while working on cruises, and something with singer/songwriter Myyora who is picking up momentum, according to Viba.

He works out of his home in Glenview, where he has all his own equipment to produce music. Viba doesn’t feel that the pandemic is keeping him from creating, even when collaborating with musicians overseas, and he uses Zoom and sharing of high-quality audio files to work on projects at home.

“I have to be honest, I am learning a lot,” he said. “There’s a learning curve. And I realize to get better, I need to put out a bunch of music all the time.”

River Forest OKs handyperson program for seniors

Senior citizens in River Forest will soon be able to receive low-cost handyperson services under a program approved by village officials at their virtual Jan. 11 village board meeting.

The five village trustees attending the meeting approved a recommendation from the village’s Age-Friendly Committee to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the village of Oak Park and Oak Park and River Forest townships for a home repair program partnership. Trustee Tom Cargie did not attend.

Village officials said the townships have already agreed to participate in the pro-

gram, with Oak Park expected to approve a recommendation from that village’s Agingin-Place Commission and join as well.

The program would be administered by the nonprofit North West Housing Partnership (NWHP), which operates a similar program in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Des Plaines and communities in Palatine and Wheeling townships.

Trustee Respicio Vazquez, who chairs the Age-Friendly Committee, explained that the program would subsidize small and minor home repairs for those 60 and older on a sliding scale. Participants would also pay for the cost of materials.

“It’s a nice program to benefit our seniors,” he said.

The total cost would be $7,000 per year, which helps offset fees paid to the workers and for NWHP to administer the program, including screening workers and seniors for eligibility and scheduling home repair appointments. With the four agencies splitting the total cost equally, River Forest’s cost would be $1,750 per year. The village’s only other responsibility would be to promote the program, according to Vazquez.

He also hopes the participating workers would receive dementia-friendly training similar to the training provided by the AgeFriendly Committee to the village’s police and fire departments and some businesses.

He suggested that officials try to work together with officials in Proviso Township, which operates a similar program.

Under the sliding scale, those with an annual income of $45,000 or more would pay $40 per hour; over $33,000 would pay $30 per hour; and $18,000 or more, $20 per hour.

Those with an annual income of less than $18,000 per year would not be charged.

The program would not include emergency repairs or work that would require a building permit. Workers would be local, when possible, and insured.

The mission of NWHP is to promote “public and private partnerships that create and preserve cost-effective, quality, diverse housing for low- to moderate-income residents and workers through housing development and renovation, education and advocacy.”

When the program would start is still to be decided.

Rush gets zoning win Plans to demolish four hospitalowned Maple Ave. homes

With no master plan in hand, Rush Oak Park Hospital went before the Oak Park Plan Commission Jan. 7 and received approval to rezone four South Maple Avenue homes acquired over time by the hospital from residential to hospital use despite having no immediate plans to develop the sites.

“There are no current development plans for this subject parcel,” the hospital’s attorney, Jim Griffin, told the commission.

The unoccupied homes extend along the street from 601 to 615 S. Maple Ave. and were acquired by hospital over the course of roughly two decades. The hospital made its most recent purchase, 613 S. Maple Ave., on Nov. 15, 2019, paying $1 million for the home.

Now, Rush plans to demolish the houses this summer, if not sooner. With the zoning change, the properties will become part of the Rush Oak Park campus and will stand as empty lots until the hospital decides on an end use.

The redevelopment of the parcel is dependent on obtaining hospital board approval and having the available capital, according to Griffin.

“Neither of these have occurred yet,” said Griffin, before reiterating that the hospital had no development plans, material or otherwise, at the moment.

Rezoning the properties at this time allows the hospital to demolish the houses and to avoid “wasteful maintenance costs which they are currently incurring in continuing to maintain these properties,” according to Griffin.

Rush Oak Park Chief Operating Officer Robert Spadoni estimated that the properties generate property taxes within the range of $60,000 to $80,000 a year. As Rush Oak Park operates as a non-profit hospital, rezoning the properties to “hospital” means Rush will no longer have to pay property taxes on the parcels.

According to Griffin, Rush believes the overall benefits of allowing campus expansion and the economic activity that doing so creates outweighs the loss of the property tax on the four plots.

The village staff report, presented by Village Planner Craig Failor, stated that the village found it prudent to rezone the properties for hospital demarcation.

Rush Oak Park has long been a source of consternation for some who live in the adjacent neighborhoods and feel encroached upon by the hospital’s expansion, which includes the proposed 713-spot Wenonah Avenue parking structure awaiting village board approval.

The hospital’s history of irregular communication with the neighbors and its lack

of a public master plan has only increased feelings of distrust and discontent, which several public commenters spoke to during the Jan. 7 meeting.

“The typical pattern of these engagements is for Rush to claim that they don’t have a plan and then withhold that information until they drop something huge out of the sky on top of the neighborhood,” David Osta said.

Rachel Hahs thanked the commission for encouraging Rush to engage more with neighborhood stakeholders but stated that neighbors lacked agency within the development process.

“Oak Park residents really have no avenues to become involved in the process from the inception of a project with the village,” said Hahs, referring to the period before a public notice is posted and before the project’s Plan Commission hearing.

“Residents feel sidelined and angry when these applications come out because it seems like a done deal already.”

While Commissioner Jon Hale felt it made sense for the hospital to want to align the homes’ zoning with its campus, he agreed with neighbors in regard to planning.

“Rush Oak Park should have a master plan in place,” Hale said.

When asked by Wednesday Journal if Rush had submitted a master plan to the village, Village Planner Craig Failor said, “I have not seen one.”

Without having development plans, Commissioner Lawrence Brozek told his commissioners that he felt no need to move forward presently.

“What is the urgency to have this rezoned if there’s no plans for it?” Brozek asked.

Commissioner Paul May felt similarly but stated he would consider changing the zoning if Rush Oak Park had actual plans to develop the properties.

“I do not see any reason to make a zoning change to allow for the demolition of those properties,” said May. “That can happen without a zoning change.”

Commissioner Jeff Foster supported making the change, explaining that the change offers some safeguards for the public because it limits Rush to only hospitalzoned property uses. Any other uses would require the hospital to go through the Plan Commission.

The commission voted 7-2 to approve the change, with May and Brozek casting the dissenting votes.

Pete’s design not so fresh Plan commission, public unimpressed with plan

Almost one year exactly since its first public meeting, Pete’s Fresh Market’s plan to construct a second Oak Park location went before the Plan Commission Jan. 7, where it received a tepid reaction from commissioners.

The 46,200-square-foot grocery store will extend along Madison Street between Oak Park Avenue and Wesley Avenue, sitting where the historic Foley-Rice building stood until its recent demolition.

Essentially a large rectangle, the Plan Commission and public found the design lacking, even with the incorporation of the now demolished auto dealership’s beloved grotesques.

“For a traditional grocery store, they’re more boxed shaped,” said project architect Ken Nadolski.

Nadolski said Pete’s needed to utilize the full width of the area to make the project functional, necessitating the rectangular shape.

The village of Oak Park’s design consultant Wight & Co. made some tweaks to the Pete’s design, including some height changes to make the building more visually interesting and to break up its length.

Wight provided a sketch to the Plan Commission for additional consideration that included extending the glass entry feature further along Madison Street to make it more proportionately significant.

Commissioner Nick Bridge expressed worries that, as designed, the Pete’s would reduce the value of nearby properties.

Other areas for concern were the proposed grocery store’s impact on traffic and village parking.

As planned, the new Pete’s boasts a total of 242 parking spots, 117 of which are surface-level spaces for customer use. An additional 11 customer parking spots will be located on Madison Street.

The plan calls for 114 employee spots, located underground and accessible by ramp. Nadolski told the commission that Pete’s will add 100 new jobs to the community and bring in a combined $1.1 million yearly in real estate and sales taxes.

Pete’s will have right in, right out access on Madison Street and Oak Park Avenue.

Per direction from village staff, Nadolski added a southbound traffic diverter on Wesley Avenue to prevent customers from driving down Wesley to loop around when looking for parking.

“Truck traffic is brought from Madison to Wesley, and then utilizing a small portion of the alley on the east side of Wesley to back in and then exit the property when it’s done,” said Nadolski.

The project involves vacating the northern leg Euclid Street and building a cul-de-sac, which will be constructed and landscaped by Pete’s. The fire department submitted a letter stating that the cul-de-sac would not impact fire services.

“I don’t know what value Oak Park gets out of any of this, particularly closing off Euclid Avenue and taking our public property and giving it to a corporation,” said resident Chris Heitzman in public comment.

The Pete’s proposal is part of a redevelopment agreement with the village of Oak Park and is subject to that agreement. However, the Plan Commission was directed to look at the project based on the application’s merits. The application itself requests several zoning variances, including reduction in setbacks and a front building façade with zero windows.

The prospect of having a 400-foot brick wall facing Madison Street did not particularly excite some commissioners. Commissioner Lawrence Brozek suggested adding display windows.

“This is a long rectangle and we really need to see more of an effort to break it up,” said Chair Iris Sims. “I think it would go a long way to change the current public and commission view of the building.”

In a unanimous vote, the commission moved to continue the public hearing until Jan. 21.

Sims still Plan Commission chair After making a surprise move to resign as chair in a moment of frustration during the Dec. 23 Plan Commission meeting, Iris Sims apparently changed her mind.

Without mentioning her sudden exit or the insinuations of sexism she lobbed in the direction of male commissioners, Sims returned to business as usual during the Jan. 7 Plan Commission meeting, which included a zoning request from Rush Oak Park Hospital.

Although her husband serves on the hospital’s board, Sims stated during the meeting she did not have a conflict of interest regarding Rush Oak Park Hospital’s request to change the zoning of its South Maple Avenue properties. Her husband’s position is unpaid and therefore neither he nor she stood to make any financial gains as a result of the hearing, according to Sims.

While Sims did not return Wednesday Journal’s request for comment, Village Planner Craig Failor confirmed Sims’s status.

“Iris Sims is the chair of the Plan Commission,” Failor told Wednesday Journal in an email sent Jan. 8.

Rush owns it. The plan? Later

I

like Rush Oak Park Hospital.

I like that when I go to the ER, and the new one is lovely, the docs have a plan to make me feel better. Over the past couple of years, one visit led to a minor surgery, the other to physical therapy. In both cases I got better.

We are fortunate to have this hospital in Oak Park. We are fortunate that 20 years ago Big Rush downtown chose to initially operate and later to purchase this hospital.

The new emergency room was a long time coming. It replaced a fully obsolete and intensely overcrowded ER on the east side of the building. And it was built on a hospital-owned parcel that had long housed unused dorm facilities for nurses and a leaking swimming pool. Still took years to work its way to the top of the Big Rush master plan.

Which suggests there is a Big Rush and a Little Rush master plan. Of course there is a master plan. The question is, especially if you live in a house adjacent to Rush Oak Park Hospital, where is the plan? Why won’t you share it with your neighbors?

Why does village government not demand you produce one before you ask for more zoning changes?

And more zoning changes is just what Rush Oak Park asked for and received last week from Oak Park’s Plan Commission.

As the Journal has reported over time, Rush has been slowly acquiring residences on South Maple Avenue. Citing the ongoing cost of maintaining empty buildings and paying property taxes on the parcels ($60,000 to $80,000 annually), the hospital asked the commission to rezone the land for hospital use.

The logical question: What’s the hospital use?

Well, you see, because of the COVID-19 pandemic “Rush is in the process of coming up with a new strategic master plan for its hospital-owned properties. By receiving re-zoning approval now, we are looking to maximize our flexibility in the future,” said

the statement released by the hospital PR staff in lieu of meeting the Journal’s request for an interview with the hospital’s longtime president, Bruce Elegant.

So what does this PR prose tell us? Well if there is “a new strategic master plan” acoming, it would tell us there is an old strategic master plan back in the hospital’s vault.

Maybe they could give a hint as to what the old plan looked like for Maple Avenue.

The press release also tells us that “plans have been put on hold as we battle the pandemic, we have also determined now is the time to begin precursory preparation for any potential projects that may arise in the future.”

“Precursory preparation,” you say. Going to need to put that phrase through our PR Translation Machine. Sounds like now that we have “maximized our flexibility” for the future and we’re hard at work on what we want to build, we’ve got the zoning in the bag. You’ll hear from us. Or as an irate neighbor put it in public comment last week, the stage is set for Rush to “drop something huge out of the sky on top of the neighborhood.”

Well it has worked so far for Rush. Why change the plan?

Multiple plan commissioners acknowledged last week that changing zoning without knowing who wants to build what is sort of backward or suggested that it is past time for the hospital to unveil its master plan and acknowledged the hospital has earned its cynical reputation among neighbors.

Hospitals need to grow. Hospitals tucked in hard against residential neighbors have to be forced to be transparent about how their plans — and there are plans — impact the neighbors.

And village governments need to represent the interests of the neighbors at least as much as the interests of the hospital.

Just fair.

Zev Siegl, co-founder of Starbucks, is a global speaker focused on inspiring entrepreneurs to make thoughtful and innovative decisions to set up new ventures for long term success. He has presented keynote addresses and served as a business advisor in Kuwait, the United Kingdom and South Africa, among others. And now Siegl’s expertise is making an impact in Forest Park.

“Zev Siegl is officially advising Kribi Coffee through a pro-bono mentorship,” said Jacques Shalo, Oak Park resident and owner of Kribi Coffee, 7324 Madison St. in Forest Park. “He has garnered so much experience across the board and is known for discovering unique businesses and personally mentors two or three at a time. We are among the businesses he is mentoring now.”

Shalo has been cultivating a relationship with Siegl for the last two years after a friend alerted Siegl to Shalo’s coffee aspirations.

The coffee mogul began doing background research on the business before Shalo, whose business at the time was focused on air roasting technology, reached out to Siegl for the first time in late 2018. The business mogul requested patience and indicated his busy schedule would likely prevent prompt responses but urged Shalo to get into the coffee shop business as quickly as possible.

“He told me to stop talking about the technology,” said Shalo. “He wanted me to get into the position where people were tasting the coffee and let them tell the story.”

That singular email inspired Shalo to acquire Counter Coffee in Forest Park and from there the two developed an easy rapport and communicated sporadically

via email. Siegl’s interest in the endeavor piqued substantially, however, when the shop rebranded as Kribi Coffee Air Roasters to reflect Shalo’s Cameroonian heritage in July 2020. Jerimiah, Shalo’s son, captured Siegl’s attention through his powerful branding and design contributions to the project. Communication became more regular and the Starbucks co-founder offered valuable behind-the scenes guidance for Shalo and Kribi Coffee.

In late December 2020, the mentorship became official.

“This mentorship has emboldened me to be true to my vision,” said Shalo.

Kribi Coffee was established with the intention of disrupting the value chain of coffee by putting more dollars into the hands of hardworking farmers rather than the roasters. Kribi’s onsite roasters allow for green coffee beans, with a long shelf life, to be roasted just before brewing. The approach results in a superior cup of coffee.

Shalo, who grew up on a coffee farm in Cameroon, was sourcing green beans from various countries around the world, but Siegl suggested Shalo narrow his focus.

Shalo was hands-on in his family’s coffee business from age five onward until his family fled the country when he was a teenager.

Siegl encouraged Shalo to focus his coffee sourcing exclusively on the farms and farmers in his home country.

Inspired by Siegl’s advice Shalo reached out to his eldest sister and legal practitioner, Barrister M.N. Weledji, who resides in Cameroon. Weledji wrote a biography of Shalo’s mother in 2013 detailing how the family came to own their coffee farm because of their mother’s entrepreneurial drive.

“I was determined to act on my legacy and

In fact, Shalo, connected with Kyle Abongnwi, a distant relative and agent with Aseans Cameroon LTD, a respected privately held coffee and cocoa export company in Cameroon. Serendipitously, Abongnwi was already managing more than 400 farmers, educating them to on how to improve their product and paying them two-to-three times the commodity value for their coffee.

Over the past six months, Shalo successfully worked with Abongnwi to gain the trust of the farmers in hopes of pre-buying their highest quality green Arabica coffee beans for use at Kribi Coffee. Shalo established a farm for Kribi comprised of 11 acres of land and built relationships with 600 farmers who are harvesting 500,000

pounds of green coffee beans for Kribi Coffee. The Forest Park coffee shop acquired a warehouse and expects the first shipment, totaling 40,000 pounds, to arrive as early as February. The beans will be offered at Kribi Coffee bringing a taste of Cameroon to Madison Street and used partially for wholesale distribution.

As for the future, Shalo is making the most of Siegl’s direct mentorship and documenting processes to ensure he has a replicable model designed to have social impact in Cameroon as well as local communities.

In an aggressive projection, Kribi Coffee could grow to 690 stores worldwide over the next seven years. An incremental step toward that goal involves a very realistic expansion in Chicagoland. In the coming year Shalo aims to open a second Kribi location in Oak Park with expanded on-site storage and roasting capacity to facilitate a robust e-commerce business.

D200 picks search firm for new superintendent

During a special meeting on Jan. 11, the District 200 school board voted unanimously to select executive search firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates to facilitate the search for the district’s next superintendent. Current Supt.

Joylynn Pruitt-Adams announced last year that she intends to retire this July.

The board selected Hazard after hearing presentations from two other executive search firms — Omaha-based McPherson & Jacobson and Libertyville-based BWP & Associates. The district hired BWP five years ago, when it was looking to replace former superintendent Steve Isoye. That search resulted in Pruitt-Adams’ hiring.

Max McGee, president of Hazard, and Connie Collins presented for the firm. Collins served as superintendent of Oak Park Elementary School District 97 from 2005 until 2010 and currently lives in the village. She said she has a granddaughter who attends Brooks Middle School.

“We’re aware that [Oak Park and River Forest High

School] and HYA understand the need for our nation and the Oak Park community to acknowledge and support a focus on racial equity,” said Collins. “We believe these are not just words on paper but an actionable goal that leads to the identification of a highly qualified, yet diverse candidate pool for your consideration.”

Hazard has conducted five superintendent searches for District 97, including the search that resulted in the hiring of current Supt. Carol Kelley back in 2015.

Collins said she partnered with the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents to develop the organization’s strategic plan and has served on the board of directors for the National Alliance of Black School Educators.

She also co-founded an institute for aspiring superintendents, which identified and trained aspiring central office administrators. She said more than 40 graduates of the organization went on to become superintendents.

The firm will charge $24,950 for the search process, which includes administrative expenses. Additional costs may be allocated for national advertising, third-party background checks and travel for finalists, McGee said.

The cost for BWP, which Hazard edged out narrowly, were $19,500 for consulting fees, which would not include another $4,675 for additional administrative and travel expenses.

McGee and Collins told board members that the firm will develop a search plan, conduct individual interviews, facilitate virtual focus groups and community forums, create a job description, advertise the position nationally, screen applicants and help the chosen candidate develop goals for the district, among other tasks.

Both Supt. Pruitt-Adams and the board have said that they want to make sure her permanent successor is hired by this current board configuration before the April 6 election. There will be at least two new board members after the election. Incumbents Jackie Moore and Matt Baron will not run for re-election.

“We think it’s certainly possible to have the final candidate identified by spring break so you can negotiate the contract and appoint that individual as early as your first meeting in April,” said McGee.

Book Table launches GoFundMe

Bookstore hopes to shelve pandemic financial strain

Always looking to support the community, popular Oak Park independent bookstore the Book Table now looks to the community for support to carry it through the remainder of the pandemic. Financial struggles caused by COVID-19 mitigations has prompted book-peddling duo Rachel Weaver and Jason Smith, the married couple who own the shop, to do something they tried hard to avoid — start a GoFundMe. “We like to be the people that help. That’s always been the ethos of the store,” said Smith. “And it’s just not normally what we think of, to ask for donations.”

But the community is responding enthusiastically to the bookstore’s reluctant plea.

Started by Weaver on Jan. 11, the GoFundMe accumulated almost $93,000 of its $250,000 goal in its first day.

“It’s one of those days where both Rachel and I have been in tears multiple times,” said Smith. “It’s very, very touching.”

The profoundly honest letter accompanying the campaign describes the Book Table’s situation from the beginning of the pandemic up until this point. Weaver didn’t shy away from including such delicate details as rent costs and property tax amounts the Book Table pays, explaining that, even

though it might look like the Book Table is in good shape to the outside eye, its situation is more precarious than it appears.

“We’re worried that we have led you to believe that you don’t need to worry about us,” Weaver wrote, delving into heartfelt explanations as to why the long lines seen outside the Book Table around Christmas didn’t equal high sales figures; longer lines were due to greatly reduced in-store capacity limits, resulting from COVID-19. The influx of web orders in December seems like a good problem on the surface but orders were coming in faster than staff could fulfill them.

The letter also goes into detail about the lengths Weaver and Smith have gone to keep their business running, while keeping employees and customers safe, as well as the dire financial situation.

“We have a federal government that has not stepped up in order to help us in the ways we honestly need help,” said Smith.

While money given through the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) helped, the Book Table has thousands of dollars’ worth of inventory needing to be sold.

“There’s no government program that is well set up for an inventory-intensive business,” said Smith.

Neither the state of Illinois nor the village of Oak Park have the financial capability to help these particular businesses; it’s up to the federal government, Smith believes.

“We need the help now,” he said. “So we had to put out the call and we are just completely grateful by the first several hours of

response.”

The holiday season is far and away the biggest time for retailers. Stores traditionally pull in favorable sales numbers during November and December, then retailers “muddle through” the rest of the year, according to Smith.

Located in the heart of downtown Oak Park at 1045 Lake St., the Book Table has lost significant business from closures of nearby restaurants and, in particular, the Lake Theatre. Foot traffic from people attending movies greatly supplemented the revenue generated by the bookstore’s regular customers.

If achieved, the $250,000 goal will allow Book Table to stay in business until 2022.

“It’s a question that I’m not willing to answer yet,” Smith said.

Smith remains cautiously optimistic about the future. He expects the bookstore will receive another round of PPP and hopes for greater government assistance when President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

With donations pouring into GoFundMe from former employees and shoppers alike, Weaver and Smith are, as they always have been, grateful to the community.

“It’s amazing the support that this community has given us all these years,” said Smith. “We’re beyond thankful.”

Second round of trustee petition hearings on Jan. 12 Local electoral board hears objections

By STACEY SHERIDAN Staff Reporter

Public comments read during the Municipal Officers Electoral Board meeting, held Jan. 6, were overwhelmingly in support of Oak Park village board trustee candidates Anthony Clark and Chibuike Enyia.

“We stand with Anthony Clark and Chibuike Enyia,” Kate O’Keefe and Adam Wojtowicz stated in a joint comment. “It makes us sad that a member of our community would go to such lengths to keep these two candidates off the ballot.”

Clark and Enyia have had their nomination petitions challenged by Oak Park resident Kevin Peppard, who believes the two men are ineligible to hold public office. Peppard’s objection against Clark alleges that he does not meet the residency requirement to serve as trustee. The objection against Enyia alleges that he has a drug-related felony conviction in Iowa. Illinois law dictates that convicted felons cannot hold public office.

As Clark and Enyia are both Black, many public commenters denounced Peppard’s objections as racist and baseless attacks. Others accused Peppard of weaponizing election law to discredit and disqualify Black candidates.

The board convened that day to hear Peppard’s objections against the two candidates, both of whom are being represented by attorney Ed Mullen. The Municipal Officers Electoral Board consists of Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb, senior Trustee Jim Taglia and Village Clerk Vicki Scaman, who were warned against letting public comment influence decision-making.

“Public comment is not evidence in the cases before the board and it’s not legally permissible for the board to consider it in making decisions in the cases,” said Village Attorney Paul Stephanides.

The purpose of the Jan. 6 hearing was to allow the parties involved to present any evidence or arguments to date, according to Stephanides. The hearing will reconvene at 2 p.m., Jan 12.

Neither Peppard nor Mullen presented any evidence or arguments in Clark’s case. Regarding the objection against Enyia, Peppard stated that he was unable to get court rulings to confirm that Enyia was convicted of a felony. Iowa court system does not allow a citizen to unseal a record after a certain number of months, according to Peppard, who asked the board to direct police to acquire the documents.

“The case hinges on whether there is and was a felony record and whether there was a pardon or not and whether the Oak Park police, or some other law enforcement agency can have access to determine what the facts are,” said Peppard.

Mullen stated that the election board is a limited administrative body under Illinois election code that has the limited purpose of passing upon objections to nominating petitions.

“It does not have any legal authority and Mr. Peppard has not presented any legal authority to order the Oak Park police to do anything,” Mullen said.

He continued, saying Peppard’s filings against the petition indicate that Peppard does not have the evidence to prove the asserted claim.

“Beyond that, the document that he has attached to his motion indicates that the resolution of Mr. Enyia’s case was a deferred judgement.”

Deferred judgements are plea agreements that allow defendants an opportunity to complete a period of probation prior to any entry of conviction. If the defendant completes probation, the court can dismiss the charges.

“What that means is that a conviction was never entered pending his completion of probation and paying a fine,” said Mullen.

The presented evidence against Enyia, according to Mullen, shows that Peppard cannot prove the claim on the basis of his objection and that a conviction was not entered.

“We believe that both legally and factually the objection is flawed and should be dismissed or overruled on the merits of this board,” said Mullen.

Oak Park police continue to investigate the incident.

Live Café is serving as the campaign headquarters of Black Oak Parkers running for village board – trustee candidates Juanta Griffin, Anthony Clark and Chibuike Enyia, as well village clerk candidate Christina Waters. Clark and Enyia both face challenges to their candidacies.

While the press conference was well attended, hundreds of people turned out to support Live Café and the antiracism movement during a vigil held the evening of Jan. 7. Oak Park police closed the block to auto traffic to accommodate the crowd of masked and socially distanced supporters. The gathering met outside the café then marched to Scoville Park in solidarity.

The attack’s timing lined up with Clark and Enyia’s electoral board objection hearing, which took place Wednesday afternoon.

At the same moment, insurrectionists descended on Washington, D.C., taking over the capitol building for several hours.

At the press conference, Graham-Washington referenced the attack on the Capitol and President Donald Trump while asking the public to consider those in the commu-

“Just as Trump was the perpetrator of yesterday’s incidents complicitly,” she said, “I would encourage you to think about who the complicit perpetrators of yesterday’s events are.”

Graham-Washington asked people to financially contribute to organizations that promote racial equity and to support Blackowned businesses to redistribute wealth and power. A GoFundMe campaign started yesterday by a community member in support of Live Café’s anti-racist mission has already accumulated about half of its $10,000 goal.

“We don’t have systemic racism on our side to put the things in our hands,” said Graham-Washington.

Clark and Enyia attended the press conference, as well. Griffin, who is recovering from surgery, was unable to attend, but told Wednesday Journal she was saddened not to “be with my people right now.”

In his address to the crowd, Clark called racism a viral pandemic, but one with a widely available vaccine: anti-racism.

“It is not enough to not be racist,” said Clark. “You have to be anti-racist.”

Clark said the racist ideologies perpetuated by the insurgents that stormed the Capitol building started at home, started with vandalism in the community and, in a nod to his own campaign situation, “it started with challenges to Black candidates and communities that are pushing for change.”

Enyia asked the crowd not to cower or be intimidated, but to speak out against racism and in support of those who others try to silence because of their skin color.

Boutet told Wednesday Journal that the term “defund the police” has not been sufficiently defined and, if added to the ballot, the referendum would not produce accurate information to gauge the community’s opinion.

The concept of defunding the police will have a place on the ballot, if not explicitly, without the referendum, according to Boutet, because candidates have to make their stances known regarding policing.

“I urge voters to be informed on where different candidates’ stand on this issue,” said Boutet, who declined to say how she will be voting on the resolution.

According to the Cook County Clerk, referenda brought through local government boards are binding. Moroney intends for his to be advisory, or not binding. Village Attorney Paul Stephanides did not immediately respond to Wednesday Journal’s request to comment on the legality of a village trustee proposing a non-binding referendum.

“As I understand it, it’s for binding or advisory,” Moroney said, suggesting the board can designate the category.

Multiple religious leaders, including Rabbi Max Weiss of Oak Park Temple B’nai Abraham Zion and Austin’s Rev. Marshall Hatch of New Mount Pilgrim Church, spoke out in support of Graham-Washington and Black political candidates, even as they condemned racism and hatred.

“An attack on Live is an attack on all of us,” said Weiss. “It is an attack on the values that bind us together. It must be met with the forces of justice and the forces of love.”

Hatch referenced the attack on Capitol Hill during his address to the crowd, using it as an example of the negative consequences that occur when hatred is appeased.

When asked why he did not bring the resolution forward sooner, when the board spent much of the previous year discussing police reform, Moroney said the idea came to him over Christmas when the board was not in session.

“This idea was brought to me in conversation by a few residents who felt that the village board should give residents more of a voice on this matter,” he said.

Those residents, according to Moroney, went to him with the idea of a referendum instead of submitting it through public comment for fear of getting “labeled.”

Moroney said board members receive masses of emails urging the village board to defund the police, which compelled him to make the request.

“We’re being asked with hundreds of emails to reduce our police force by roughly 30 percent,” said Moroney.

When asked why the resolution did not include any percentage or timeframe in which to defund the police department, Moroney said the vague wording was commandeered language used by police reform advocates.

“It’s the language that advocates are using, if it’s not ‘abolished,’” said Moroney.

Moroney mentioned Trustee Arti Walker-Peddakotla, who has made police reform her cornerstone issue since being elected and who sponsored a defunding resolution before the village board last August. She is also allied with other organizers who post on social media calling to defund law enforcement.

Flournoy also called out Kevin Peppard, the person who filed the petition challenges.

Referring to him as a “joker,” Flournoy reminded the crowd that Peppard filed challenges in 2016 against two incumbent Black trustees, Glenn Brewer and Peter Barber, causing them to lose their seats.

“We’re not going to be able to address our problem, our pervasive, racist, misogynistic, oppressive problem that we are addicted to until we come out of denial,” she said.

“Advocates are taking a complex topic, and really reducing it to hash tag,” said Moroney.

Moroney categorically denied having any underlying political motive for bringing the defunding referendum to the village board table.

“This is a massive issue,” said Moroney. “Public safety is a bedrock role of municipal government.”

In an interview with Wednesday Journal, Walker-Peddakotla called Moroney’s referendum “a charade,” as well as a “political stunt.”

“I wonder why Trustee Moroney wasn’t so interested in public opinion in November of 2020, when he could have put a referendum question on that ballot,” Walker-Peddakotla said.

She expressed skepticism regarding Moroney’s explanation that he is interested in gathering public opinion on the defunding issue.

“Trustee Moroney has never been interested; he hasn’t listened to public opinion on a host of issues,” she said.

In her time on the board, Walker-Peddakotla said Oak Park residents have shared with the village board their opinions on defunding, as well as policing in general, with more frequency and in greater numbers than any other issue.

“This to me is yet another political ploy by Trustee Moroney,” said Walker-Peddakotla. “It’s just a blatant attempt to try and sway an election in his favor and the board should vote against it.”

Archdiocese eyes combined St. Luke and St. Bernardine Forest Park could lose its only Catholic church

Forest Park losing its only Catholic Church is one of two scenarios being considered by the Archdiocese of Chicago as Forest Park’s St. Bernardine parish and River Forest’s St. Luke parish are independently talking to parishioners and offering feedback to the archdiocese about their preferred and shared path forward.

These two Catholic parishes have been grouped together as part of the archdiocese’s Renew My Church initiative, which aims to combine churches throughout the city and suburbs in the face of declining mass attendance and deteriorating finances.

According to Susan Thomas, public relations and communications manager for the Archdiocese of Chicago, a final decision is scheduled for March.

Under both of the possible scenarios, the two parishes will be united as one, with shared assets, budget and staff.

But the real decision is how the church buildings themselves will be used, with the two archdiocesan options being either 1) closing the doors to St. Bernardine’s church

and holding all services at St. Luke’s church, or 2) having one pastor overseeing both churches, which will hold separate masses but be united in finances and governance.

For St. Luke and St. Bernardine, the archdiocese held a Zoom presentation on Jan. 7 led by LeRoy Chalmers, senior project manager of operations transition for Renew My Church.

Chalmers said that no decision has yet been made, and the Renew My Church committees at both parishes are encouraged to gather as much feedback as possible to officially submit to the archdiocese.

Feedback will go to the Renew My Church archdiocesan advisory groups that include Betsy Bohlen, chief operating officer for the Chicago Archdiocese, and a panel of priests and other leaders.

“This is not a top-down approach,” Chalmers said, adding that Cardinal Blase Cupich, who will make the final decision, “is very adamant about getting feedback from the communities, who really know their communities best.”

Ultimately, though, Cupich makes the final call.

Why Renew My Church?

At the core, the archdiocese admits “a decline in faith life” is at the heart of the need to close some churches and combine

others. Mass attendance throughout the archdiocese is down, fewer children raised in the faith continue in it into adulthood, and the number of priests is on the decline.

Additionally, the maintenance of churches is expensive.

According to Chalmers’ presentation there are three foundational principles that guide whether a parish might remain independent or should become part of a larger grouping. They relate to regular mass attendance, operating revenue and parish school stability.

Parishes need to have a minimum of 800 parishioners attending mass each weekend to be assigned a full-time pastor. The most recent data collected by the archdiocese shows St. Bernardine with weekly attendance of 339 and St. Luke at 602, both under the necessary cutoff established by the archdiocese.

A parish must have minimum operating revenue of $750,000, excluding rental income, to support staffing of an independent parish. St. Bernardine’s 2019 operating revenue was only $394,604. St. Luke’s was $1,055,559.

As for school stability, St. Bernardine’s school closed in 2013, but St. Luke’s 2020-21 enrollment is at 260, above the minimum 240 student enrollment set by the archdiocese and possibly lower this year due to COV-

ID-19. (Enrollment in the 2019-20 school year was 296.)

Chalmers presented strengths of combining St. Bernardine and St. Luke parishes, including meeting the weekly attendance minimum and the opportunity to bring more students to St Luke’s school.

But the archdiocese has identified “challenges” of the grouping as well. For starters, parishioners unhappy about the grouping may leave, and the minimum attendance issue might not be remedied as a result.

And, if services are moved to St. Luke, and if St. Bernardine’s church is closed, Chalmers pointed out a sad possibility: “Closing St. Bernardine would create a Catholic desert in Forest Park.”

Groupings might not stop with St. Bernardine and St. Luke’s, however. According to Thomas, “St. Vincent Ferrer [in River Forest] will be part of future grouping discussions about evangelization and other ministry after the current structural discussions between St. Bernardine and St. Luke conclude.

St. Vincent Ferrer is owned by the Dominican Friars, which affects the structural options possible between St. Vincent Ferrer and the other two parishes. “With this in mind, it has been more fruitful for structural discussions to remain between St. Bernardine and St. Luke,” he said.

Oak Park nonprofits submit plans for Austin landmark

Two nonprofits with ties to Oak Park have submitted proposals for redeveloping the former Laramie State Bank, 5200-5224 W. Chicago Ave. in Austin.

The Oak Park Regional Housing Center, located at 1041 South Blvd. in Oak Park, already has an office in Austin, and New Moms, headquartered in Austin but with an office at 206 Chicago Ave. in Oak Park, each teamed up with other organizations to submit separate redevelopment proposals.

The Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) received seven responses from developers and community organizations interested in redeveloping the former Laramie State Bank.

As part of the Invest South/West initiative, the city has been inviting organizations to submit redevelopment proposals for mostly city-owned lots. The Laramie State Bank site is the only site where the lots are split between two private owners although the city is prepared to buy up the land if necessary. The idea is to attract development to neighborhoods that haven’t gotten much attention and to give local residents input into whatever redevelopment happens.

The Housing Center teamed up with Heartland Alliance’s housing division for a proposal that calls for developing 76 housing units, 53 of which would be affordable.

The organizations would set up a “community-led board of directors” that would control what goes into about 10,000 square feet of commercial space. The bank building would include a bank branch although the proposal doesn’t specify which bank.

The development would also include a museum, a busi-

ness incubator, a community co-working space, a coffee shop operated by an Austin native, and several outdoor and indoor community spaces.

“I am a product of the West Side and I’ve always had this vested interest in advocating for the community and wanting to see it grow and thrive and do better,” said Athena Williams, executive director of the Oak Park Regional Housing Center.

Williams said she’s even tried, unsuccessfully, to acquire the Laramie Bank Building herself. So when the city sent out requests for proposal, Williams said, she asked multiple West Side organizations if they wanted to partner on a proposal.

Heartland Alliance, a Chicago-based anti-poverty organization, expressed interest in collaborating in the area of tenant selection. Williams, however, asked if they could do

even more than that and team up in the area of development. She said the pitch was made smoother by the fact that Rob Breymaier, Williams’ predecessor at the Housing Center, is now COO for Heartland’s housing division.

“At the end of the day, there’s not enough affordable housing in any of our communities,” Williams said. “I feel that, if we can get this off the ground, this can be one of the chapters in the next book for the Oak Park Regional Housing Center.”

Williams declined to identify specific retailers, such as the Austin coffee shop operator, citing the early stage of the process.

New Moms, a nonprofit that provides services for young moms, teamed up with Holsen Development, an affordable housing developer, on a proposal that includes an Access Health Clinic on the first and second floors of the bank building, and a business incubator on the third floor of the building.

The new building would include 81 affordable housing units, a GoGrocer grocery store, a small Chicago-based chain that bills itself as a more health-conscious version of 7-Eleven, and a Sonrisa Family Dental location. The proposal mentions that artist Tye Moores, an Austin native, would be involved in some capacity.

The other five proposals included some mix of affordable housing and retail, with many proposals featuring art hubs and business incubators. According to DPD Commissioner Maurice Cox, all proposals will go through “a formal, community-driven review process,” and the developer will be selected “in early 2021.”

All seven finalists have to produce a video presentation at a planning department meeting next week, Williams said.

D97, D200 boards approve tax levies D97 takes CPI increase while D200 avoids it

School districts 97 and 200, last month, approved tax levies for the 2020 levy year.

While the D97 board’s levy represents a slight increase, consistent with the change in the Consumer Price Index, which measures the rate of inflation, the D200 board chose to stick with a decision it made in November to avoid the CPI-related increase in order to keep its levy relatively flat compared with last year’s levy.

The D97 board voted unanimously on its levy at a meeting on Dec. 15. The district’s total 2020 tax levy is $82,404,000, which is a 2.3 percent increase over the 2019 levy extension. The increase is tied to the CPI. In a memo on Dec. 11, Rob Grossi, the district’s outside financial consultant, said the levy was “recommended with consideration of the district’s long-term financial projections, the district’s long-term facility needs, the district’s long-term academic objectives, and consideration of the long-term fiscal uncertainty stemming from the fiscal crisis of the state of Illinois.”

Grossi added that the levy will “best ensure fiscal and academic stability as well as safe and functional facilities” and ensures

that the district is in compliance with its fund balance policy of maintaining at least three to six months’ worth of reserves.

The D200 board voted unanimously to adopt its 2020 tax levy at a regular meeting on Dec. 17. The board decided to only tax new property, leaving out the 2.3 percent CPI increase, for a total levy of $73,409,472.

That represents a 0.4 percent increase over the 2019 tax extension of $73,099,996.

The third option means that the D200 ad-

ministration must make budget cuts equivalent to the CPI amount of $1.7 million, district officials said.

“This will result in eliminating building rental usage, overtime, reduction in student sports/clubs, and support services for students,” said Cyndi Sidor, D200’s chief financial officer, and Alyssa Alfano, the district’s finance director, in a Dec. 3 memo.

So far, the district has not identified how it will make up that nearly $2 million in rev-

enue, but the mere discussion of possible cuts by administrators last month prompted a tense back-and-forth between board members and district staff, with many board members accusing administrators of playing politics with the numbers by forecasting cuts in sensitive areas, such as the pool and special education.

Both school districts will start drafting budgets later this year.

African-American women advanced equity in D97

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

hat the hell is going on? Dominating the headlines is a petulant and vindictive President spewing lies and urging his supporters to attack the very government he swore to protect.

What resulted was a deadly insurrection attempt being popularized as a “protest” against a legitimate election — incited by the sitting President. While many claim (and they might be right) that Trump is mentally unstable, I have been more concerned about his lack of empathy and inability to take in any information that does not reinforce his biases. He is, in a phrase, “learner blocked.” As the days of the Trump administration wind down, I am reflecting on what comes next for us as a nation.

Will we be able to reconcile the stark differences that threaten to further divide and separate us? What is causing or contributing to furthering this division? While I don’t have the answers to these questions, I do have some opinions. For example, I would submit that the “the weasel in the woodpile” is systemic racism.

Systemic racism is the triumph of racialized policies and practices over the principle of equal opportunity for all. Systemic racism gives access to societal privileges by one group of people over another based on the belief that one group is superior to another. While not all white Americans exercise their inherent privileges, Black Americans lack even access to these racially coded privileges.

Systemic racism didn’t start with police killings of unarmed Blacks. It started with the genocidal policy toward indigenous people. Similarly, enslaved Africans, because of the color of their skins, became the target for exclusion and marginalization. Systemic racism should not be confused with bigotry and racial stereotypes. The Archie Bunker type of racist is simply a tool who puts a face on a system that has corrupted every institution in this country.

Systemic racism is the codification of beliefs designed to keep certain groups marginalized. Once installed, it does not require that racists meet and plan on how to keep Blacks in a ditch of despair and destitution. The American system of racism is now autonomous and self-perpetuating. American racism does not need or require whites to be overt racists — all they need to do is remain silent.

This silence is practiced and loud. Every transgression against Black people is rationalized by pulling up old arrest records of the victims. It appears that if the person was arrested years ago for shoplifting, execution on the streets and corners of America today by police is justifiable homicide.

Go figure.

The police are not in Black communities to mainly protect and serve. Rather, they are dispatched to patrol and profile.

And if the denizens of these ghettos are found outside of daylight working hours in a white community, it is assumed

Attack on Live Cafe

t was a disheartening but not surprising way to start a new year in Oak Park, America.

A brick wrapped in a racist message was hurled — and notably repelled — at the front door of Live Café, the coffee shop and gathering space on Oak Park Avenue.

Live Café, pre-pandemic Oak Park’s most actively, consciously diverse retail space, is a Black, woman-owned business. It is also serving this election season as the headquarters for the slate of three Black candidates running for Oak Park’s village board. The message on the brick was “No n-----s on the ballot.”

This brick was clearly delivered with intent along with hate, fear and ignorance. Oak Park police continue to investigate the incident.

The response to this attack on Live Café, Reesheda GrahamWashington its owner, and the candidates for office, was swift and energized. From a press conference outside the cafe the morning after the crime to a street-closing vigil that same evening, thousands have shown their support. The incident drew wide news coverage both locally and on Chicago TV news programs.

Graham-Washington, one of several speakers at the vigil, was typically powerful and eloquent. On issues of equity and systemic racism, of the virulence of racism in this community and in our country, Graham-Washington overflows with insight. She is one of Oak Park’s most critical voices.

The cafe, closed for a time during the pandemic, will reopen for take-out very soon. Supporting this voice and this space is essential to Oak Park’s forward progress.

Saving Laramie Bank building When Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced the Invest South/West project to focus development on the long-ignored and -abused neighborhoods of the city, we were pleased that one of the West Side buildings singled out for salvage and renewal is the Laramie State Bank Building.

Situated on the corner of Chicago Avenue and Laramie, this is a true landmark building. Stunning inside and out, the building is in an advanced state of decay. If it is to be saved, this is the moment.

And support from city government and other agencies will be essential.

There are seven bidders in the about-to-begin review process.

Happily, two of them have strong Oak Park connections. The Oak Park Regional Housing Center has teamed with the Heartland Alliance and its housing division on an ambitious proposal to create affordable housing, a locally owned coffee shop, co-working spaces and bank branch in the space. New Moms, a nonprofit rooted in both Austin and Oak Park, has partnered with an affordable housing developer to create a project featuring both affordable units and several health care components.

These are the sort of cross-Austin Boulevard projects that foster connection and hope for our shared future as part of the Greater West Side. We applaud both the Housing Center and New Moms for their vision for this singular building.

The essential Book Table When last we checked the GoFundMe launched just Monday morning by Rachel Weaver and Jason Smith on behalf of their Book Table independent bookstore in downtown Oak Park had raised a gratifying $93,000. Surely it is higher by now.

The goal is to raise $250,000 to steady this essential Oak Park institution and set it up to ride out the pandemic. That so many Oak Parkers, former Oak Parkers, and book lovers in general have leapt at the chance to support the Book Table is wondrous but not a surprise.

This is a terrific and ambitious bookstore owned by people who love books. The most frequent comment on the fundraising page is that Oak Park without this independent bookstore is unimaginable.

We fully agree.

What would be a just verdict for Trump?

W

hat would justice look like in the case of The American People v. Donald Trump, currently being adjudicated in the court of public opinion?

In the wake of last week’s Trump-incited “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol — “attempted coup” is not an exaggeration — many have called for “accountability” for the “seditionists” and resignations by Trump and his congressional enablers for “fomenting this act of domestic terrorism,” this “attack on the heart of democracy.”

Lovely words, but all words and no action means we’ll see more of this. Much more Needless to say, the 25th Amendment will not be invoked by Trump’s craven, spineless underlings — aka Mike Pence and whatever’s left of the cabinet.

Accountability would require a principled stand on the part of the G.O.P., and very little of that has been evident so far, though there is still time for Republicans to redeem themselves.

Impeachment is a good place to start, but Trump won’t be convicted by the cowards in the still-Republican-controlled Senate. Nonetheless, as many have said, “Doing nothing is not an option.” Even the superconservative Wall Street Journal editorial page noted, “The best case for impeachment is not to punish Mr. Trump. It is to send a message to future presidents that Congress will protect itself from populists of all ideological stripes willing to stir up a mob.”

As conservative columnist David Brooks put it last Friday on the PBS Newshour, “If interfering with election certification [with] an invading force is not an impeachable offense, I don’t know what is.” Even without a conviction, impeachment would be “a sword over his head which might restrain him in his last days in the White House.”

Brooks, though, suggested an intriguing alternative, which has been making the rounds online: “The fallback position might be censuring him under Article 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prevents someone taking part in an insurrection against the United States from ever running for federal office.

That’s important because it would reduce his role as an intimidator in the Republican Party and reduce the possibility of his running in 2024.”

What would “true justice” look like? Not just “what would make us feel good” justice. Some might wish for a wall (how fitting), a blindfold and a firing squad.

But capital punishment is waaaay too good for this traitor. Justice, after all, is not simply about punishment. True justice provides appropriate consequences for the guilty but also reparations for the victims (us), even those who were complicit in enabling Trump to become the monster he is today. That includes all who tried to remain neutral because, as author Ibram X. Kendi so powerfully puts it, “Neutrality colludes with evil.” American passivity helped make Trump possible. All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Fortunately, a majority of us woke up just in time.

So what would cause Trump the greatest pain and give the rest of us the greatest boost? Three things: 1) Shut him up.

2) Ignore him.

3) Disqualify him from ever running for federal of-

fice again.

Shutting him up has already begun, thanks to Twitter and Facebook, but we can’t shut him up entirely. The right to free speech has to be upheld (minus sedition and fomenting violent overthrow of the legally elected government). Even without Twitter, he’ll still be able to rant and rave on right-wing outlets — mostly to his deluded base, but happily not to those of us living in the real world.

Mainstream media no longer has to cover all of his antics, though, which is where #2 comes into play. The media was complicit in creating the Trump phenomenon. They covered him like crazy because crazy makes irresistible content and crazy made them tons of money.

A voluntary ban on coverage — at least through the 2024 election — would be just punishment not only for Trump, but for the media as well. Trump’s definition of hell is being ignored. But just to be on the safe side, someone needs to keep an eye on his attempts to overthrow the government again.

And that’s where #3 comes into play. If Trump is disqualified from running for federal office, his seditious ravings will be moot.

Each of these consequences provides benefits.

Hopefully it would mean breaking the psychosis that grips his supporters and calming the anxiety the rest of us have suffered for years. We will be a mentally healthier country.

Impeachment and conviction would also include disqualification, but if that doesn’t work, here is Section 3 of the 14th Amendment: No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.

In other words, disqualification. But the Constitution is a vaguely written document. It doesn’t specify the process for disqualifying a president who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the Constitution of the United States. Presumably, Congress would vote to censure, and the case would make its way to the Supreme Court to determine if Trump can be kept off the ballot in 2024.

You would think even Republican invertebrates like Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz would recognize that their political ambitions depend on sidelining Trump forever. Plenty of incentive, even for those with no principles.

All of us hunger and thirst for justice. Some of us storm the Capitol to defend their fearless leader’s paranoid delusions. Some of us call for accountability and resignations and look for the most eloquent and vivid way to condemn such iniquity. But we won’t have true justice until we shut Trump up (non-violently, of course), ignore him (yet keep an eye on him), and prevent him from running for public office (ever).

Anything short of that will guarantee more attacks on our democracy.

The proper penalty for treason The President of the United States orders his supporters to descend on Washington D.C. the day Congress counts the electoral ballots. He, his son, and his lawyer speak to the mob to egg them on (Trump promised to march to the Capitol with them; Donald Trump Jr.: “We’re coming for you and we’re gonna have a good time doing it!”; Rudi Giuliani: “Let’s have trial by combat”). The rioters then march unimpeded to Congress where the Capitol police invite them in, some taking selfies with these domestic terrorists, but one policeman is beaten to death with a fire extinguisher.

Congress flees in terror for their lives as the rioters trash the offices of senators and congressmen.

Sen. Josh Hawley fist-pumps the rioters, and Sen. Ted Cruz was still fundraising on the basis of his (and Hawley’s) incitement of the mob even after they had breached the Capitol building [i]. Every senator and representative who attempted to block congressional confirmation of the electoral college vote knew full well that the election was fair and Biden’s victory was overwhelming. They were engaging in political theater, purely to stoke the hatred of democracy their supporters thrive on.

These individuals are guilty of treason. They knowingly aided and abetted an attempt to violently overthrow the United States Government.

What should their penalty be? The penalty for treason is death, and this remedy would be fully justified. However, perhaps we should not descend to the level of the lame duck Trump regime, who have been busily executing a record-breaking

number of prisoners on death row, just for sport [ii]. I would be content if the Ivy League-educated, pampered rich boys who perpetrated this assault on American democracy (Giuliani, Cruz, Hawley and other congressional enablers, the entire Trump family) were sentenced to live out the rest of their lives in a trailer park, among their core constituency who were the targets of their political theater.

This would give plenty of time for these rich snobs to explain to their supporters why they should appreciate the GOP keeping the minimum wage at $7.25, refusing to provide single-payer health insurance, taking away their pensions, their Social Security, and their Medicare, leading to the American health system costing double that of any other advanced nation while being at the bottom in health-care quality of [iii]. Flying the flag till this president is gone As of Thursday last, at this house, we will fly Old Glory out front until this vain and inglorious president of ours is gone. At the people’s house the day before, the American flag, by a know-nothing rabble, was shamelessly waved and wrapped around their shoulders as a symbol of anarchy. We all witnessed the rioters, incited by our president, rage through the halls of our Capitol.

We saw the disrespect, the desecration, and the violence. We saw them disrupt the work of Congress. We also saw that they did not prevail or stop anything. Congress met. Joe Biden will be our next president.

Who are these people? These rioters? They are not us. They are not Democrats or Re-

publicans. They are something else. I hope they are only misguided. But if they are not good citizens, they had better not come to our house because our American flag stands for liberty, equality and justice under the law.

These ideals have been our protection since the founding of America.

Besides, we have a strong and resolute snowman out front standing guard. He is a symbol of home and neighborhood and joy.

He will keep us safe from a mindless mob and a joyless president. He will keep us safe until peace and civility again graces our Republic and the daffodils bloom under our pear tree.

Is our reputation gathering dust?

Perhaps this will have changed by the time this is published, but I am incredibly disappointed that our village trustees have not issued a statement condemning the hate crime perpetrated against Live Cafe, as they were quick to do after the vandalism at Mayor AbuTaleb’s home — and as River Forest trustees

and flavorful. My personal preference is for lots of fennel in the sausage, but that’s probably just me: I enjoyed every bite of Bertolli’s sausage.

The onion is a good addition, adding a touch of acidity and sweetness to the pie, both of which work well with the cheese.

But aside from what was on the pizza, Bertolli’s pies are also to be praised for what they *don’t* put on their pizza: lots of cheese. The over-cheesing of a pizza happens all the time, and though this, too, is a personal preference, I prefer the cheese to be reasonably applied, not too abundantly.

We want a balance of ingredients, and Bertolli’s applies toppings in what seem to be equal amounts, so that no one of them overwhelms the others.

Pizza is America’s most popular ethnic food. It’s so popular, in fact, that I doubt most people consider a pizza pie to be anything other than all-American. The Oak Park-River Forest-Forest Park area is lucky to have such an abundance of excellent purveyors of the pie, including Jimmy’s Place, Gaetano’s and, of course, Bertolli’s.

Rush needs to be open about its plans In the 32 years my family and I have lived next to Rush Oak Park Hospital, we have seen how the hospital has repeatedly ignored neighbors’ valid concerns as it has encroached further and further into the neighborhood. The hospital has torn down single-family homes in the 600 block of Wisconsin to make way for a massive medical office building and bulldozed the west side of the entire block of 500 Wenonah for a proposed parking garage.

Now the hospital is gobbling up homes in the 600 block of Maple Avenue, and wants the village to rezone the properties from a residential district to a hospital district. Astonishingly, the hospital refuses to reveal what it plans to do with the properties. This latest request marks a new low in the hospital’s longstanding lack of transparency and neighborhood engagement.

The hospital wants to demolish four residential buildings, take them off the property rolls and turn the north end of the block into a big, vacant lot. The hospital says the lot would remain vacant for 12 to 18 months or longer before the hospital receives funding and approval from Rush to build its secret project.

Ode to ordinary people

The hospital argues that vacant buildings are undesirable, so it is doing the neighborhood a favor by turning them instead into an ugly, vacant lot. This is an astonishing argument, since the hospital itself is to blame for creating the vacant buildings.

The hospital rezoning request is now before the Oak Park Village Board. The board can protect the character of the neighborhood by tabling the rezoning request until the hospital: ■ Discloses its plans for the properties it already has purchased on Maple, and as well as any additional properties it may purchase ■ Develops a Master Plan and shares it with the Plan Commission and the neighbors ■ Meets with neighbors and incorporates their input before proceeding with further additions to its campus In the meantime, the village should require the hospital to properly maintain the properties it has purchased on Maple, rather than allowing them to deteriorate further into boarded-up eyesores.

Civics classes are a vaccine against tyrrany In 1967 my public school announced that Civics would be dropped from my eighthgrade curriculum. I guess they thought the history class lessons about Caligula and Hitler would inoculate us against tyranny. Too bad; they were wrong.

History looks backward. Civics looks forward, preparing adolescents for one of their important adult titles: citizen. Civics teaches the basic requirements for civil discourse, respect for one’s opponent, how to construct an argument, a rebuttal. How to persuade, how not to be persuaded. How and why we vote, pay taxes, obey laws, respect civil servants.

The insurrection of Jan. 6, has made it crystal clear to me that the dark tendencies of human nature have the potential to poison our ability to be citizens of a democracy.

We need to study how to discuss difficult subjects, like reparations, anti-semitism, white privilege, and unconscious bias. We struggle to even begin these conversations because we don’t know how to disagree with civility and respect. But the next generations won’t wait for us to wise up.

our love of individuals must propagate outward to include all people who are different from me. If we start from an open mind, we can hammer out solutions.

We float on a sea of ideas. Money is one of these ideas: it works only when we all believe in it. Freedom is an idea, as is democracy. They have no corporeal body — they exist only in the minds of those who share them.

We all love our freedom, oh boy do we.

We’ll paint our chest and wear funny hats in public because we have this idea that freedom means we can do anything. In fact, Freedom is only freedom when we understand its limits, and when our actions infringe on the rights of others.

We need Civics back in public school, and more speech, rhetoric and debate. Parents of school-age children need to demand this.

My generation is too far gone, lost in a sea of hippie selfishness. But my 30-something children will not tolerate the shortcomings of Boomers for long.

ig protest in D.C. on January 6th,” Mr. Trump tweeted on Dec. 19, just one of several of his tweets promoting the day. “Be there, will be wild!”

Although some problems should have been anticipated, no one would have believed that this demonic dictator of a president was planning a coup. There was no preparedness to thwart the mobs (an estimated 2,000 thugs) that flooded the Capitol. They were equipped with guns, tear gas, metal pipes, zip cords, Molotov cocktails, clubs, Confederate and Trump flags, all the while shouting outrageous epithets — “Hang Pence”, “Kill Pelosi”, “Trump was cheated”, “They stole the vote.” One of the reporters said a group of these blood-thirsty domestic terrorists had set up a make-shift gallows, ready to kill!

The sights we viewed on television were frighteningly horrible — people scrambling for safety, glass shattering, looting, guns drawn, locked doors battered open, eyes filled with fear, staring out from barricades. In contrast, marauders’ eyes filled with hate!

As a kid, I remember bullies trying to hurt us, and we would answer, “Sticks and stones will break our bones, but words can never hurt us.” How naive we were! It’s lies, repeated over and over again, that are the most damaging and difficult to overcome. We see how effective Trump’s lies have been — the riots he

Strategic plan affirms curriculum equity The D97 Strategic Plan, finalized in 1990, culminated several years of conflict, community meetings, forums, and equityfocused action by parents and teachers. Unfortunately, we witnessed and learned a great deal about our vulnerability on Jan. 6: Racism and white privilege were never more apparent as when these vicious white trespassers invaded the Capitol.

They were almost given a free pass of entry by the D.C. Police, some of whom actually cooperated with the marauders, and with some officers even taking photo selfies with them. We know the police would have gunned down a group of black protesters if they merely breached the marching area.

The National Guard was desperately needed to stop the madness, but they must have federal authority to be ordered to act. Trump blocked the deployment.

(This answers the question of why, less than two months before Biden’s inauguration, Trump fired Homeland Security officers, and re-placed them with young inexperienced men lacking knowledge and experience. Trump felt assured they would not use their newfound authority.

Trump’s evil ideas to overtake the government were preplanned long before the 2020 election. Early in 2017, Trump stated he thought he should be president for all time. (It was supposed to have been a joke.)

His Pied-Piper showmanship provided him a huge following. Without concern for the nation or the worsening pandemic, and caring only for the selfish power of the presidency, Trump persisted with his grand lie.

Section 4 of Article 2 of the Constitution states, “The President, Vice President, and all Civil Officers of the United States shall be removed from office on Impeachment for and Conviction of Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors.” Certainly there is no doubt Trump qualifies for any and all of these misdeeds, and should be removed from the presidency.

The 25th Amendment of the Constitution (Section 4) may also be invoked to remove the President from office. The

To ensure accountability, Ella Pappademos over 30 years ago insisted that best intentions were not enough. The strict accountability she wanted — to avoid the backsliding that was too common in Oak Park — was finally put in place with the recently adopted Racial Equity procedures for evaluation of all programs. This includes a set of explicit racial equity impact assessment protocols.

As D97 was making its unprecedented commitment to racially equitable learning, APPLE (African Americans for Purposeful Leadership in Education) mothers and grandmothers at Oak Park and River Forest High School were dedicating countless hours serving as adult mentors, counselors, and tutors for Black children. By the early ’90s, the issues of racial equity came directly to District 200 as a group of teachers created a small program for de-tracking. In 1991, OPRF High School issued an impressive and startling self-study on racial achievement disparities.

To those stories and the racially divisive 1995 D200 School Board election I turn to next in Part VII.

My fears extend beyond Trump’s removal from office. His well-honed angry mob will try again, instigated by Trump even when he’s out of office. I’m deeply concerned for the state of our country. Yet I look forward to and welcome President Biden and Vice President Harris to their honored and duly-elected positions as administrators of our nation’s leadership. It is my hope that these domestic terrorists who caused five deaths and many injuries as well as damage to our Capitol, will be arrested and prosecuted for their crimes.

May we look forward to calming the present chaos, controlling and eliminating violence, being guided by truth and facts, and restoring faith in our government. However, how can we replace the lies with truth? And how can we reverse hate?

Let us sincerely be the nation that can proudly prove to the world we value and represent peace, truth and justice for all.

Larry Hosty, 74

Avid reader, outdoorsman, musician Lawrence (Larry) R. Hosty, 74, died peacefully on Christmas Day, 2020. Born on June 23, 1946, he grew up in River Forest and attended St. Luke Grade School. He graduated from Fenwick High School and St. Norbert’s College, then spent six years in the Army Reserves.

He had a varied career history, working as a trader on the Chicago Board Options Exchange, a funeral director in Dayton, Ohio, and retired after 25 years with the Cook County Purchasing Department.

A voracious reader, he had vast knowledge of world history, and also enjoyed a good mystery. He loved fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and spending time at his family home in Michigan, visiting with his family, gardening, and walking the beach. He especially looked forward to the coffee klatch every Saturday morning in the Big House. An amateur guitar player, he loved the music of the Dooley Brothers, the Kingston Trio, Sinatra and many other artists.

He enjoyed traveling to celebrate special occasions with his kids. He was very proud of the many accomplishments his kids achieved.

Larry was the husband of Nancy (Madden), his wife of 17 years; the father of Katharine (Katie) and Lawrence (Larry) R. Hosty Jr. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Jane Hoyne Hosty. Larry was the devoted son of Thomas E. and Joan Ryan Hosty; dear brother to Thomas (Sue), P.J. (Kathy), the late Robert (Peggy), Terry

(Ellen), John (Lissa) and Della; cherished brother-in-law to all in the Hoyne, O’Brien and Madden families; fond uncle, greatuncle and godfather to many.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held in Larry’s honor, at a later date, when it is safe for everyone to be together.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association would be appreciated.

Dan Lavery, 88

Crossword puzzle and chess wiz Daniel Philip Lavery, 88, of Oak Park, died on Jan. 1, 2021. Born on June 28, 1932, in New York City, the only child of Daniel Philip Lavery and Agnes Hunt, both immigrants from Scotland, he grew up in Queens and graduated from Regis High School in 1950 and Manhattan College in 1954, with a degree in chemistry. He met the love of his life, Doris Emily Guenther, on a blind date set up by their mothers who worked together as telephone operators. Dan and Doris were married on Oct. 21, 1954.

After college, he served two years as an officer in the Air Force and then started work for Dupont in New Jersey, developing photographic paper. He completed his MBA at Rutgers University in 1963, attending night school while working full time and became the plant manager at a photographic paper plant, Anken Chemical, in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1964. He began a business consulting career in the New York area in 1977 and moved to Wyckoff, New Jersey,

where he lived for the rest of his career. He was a founding partner in the Matterhorn Group.

They had four sons and were active members of their local Catholic church. They traveled extensively and especially enjoyed trips to Ireland and Israel.

Considered a Renaissance man, he read the New York Times daily, cover to cover, always completing the crossword puzzle in pen. An accomplished photographer, he enjoyed classical music, reading novels, and especially enjoyed playing chess with his kids and grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris, in 2010 and moved to Oak Park, where he lived prior to his death. He was very involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren and continued to explore his love of art and culture, including frequent trips to the Art Institute.

His survivors include his sons, Dr. Daniel P. Lavery (Diana); Dr. Brian E. Lavery (MaryAnn); Dr. Kevin T. Lavery (Kathleen); and Michael P. Lavery, of Oak Park; his 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A private memorial event will be planned by the family.

Dennis Sheehan, 79 St. Pat’s Day Parade marshal for 30 years

Dennis Michael Sheehan (or “Denny Mike” as his family knew him), 79, of Oak Park, died on Jan. 4, 2021. Born on March 4, 1941 in Chicago to Dr. Edward Sheehan and Phyllis Sheehan (nee Freeman), he attended

grade school at St. Thomas Aquinas in Chicago and St. Vincent Ferrer in River Forest.

He graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1959, joined the Army Reserve in 1963 and proudly served his country until 1969. He worked as a broker at the Chicago Board of Trade, alongside his brothers Terrance and Thomas, until his retirement in 1998.

He married the love of his life, Joan K. Sheehan (nee McGough) on Oct. 8, 1983, and became a father on June 13, 1986 with the birth of his first son, Seamus. Their two other sons, Eamonn and Padraig were born on April 4, 1988 and Oct. 13, 1990 respectively.

He lived for his boys and grew to become not only their father but their best friend. His own father died when he was only 16, so he cherished every moment of being a father and was incredibly proud of his sons’ accomplishments.

Standing a mere 5-feet-7, he had a towering personality. Always ready with a joke, he brought a smile to everyone and was instantly recognized every March as he celebrated his Irish heritage at area St. Patrick’s Day parades in his kilt. He loved St. Patrick’s Day and was a marshal in the Chicago parade for over 30 years. He also enjoyed hunting and took great pride in sharing his love of the outdoors with his sons.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Joan; his sons, Seamus, Eamonn, and Padraig, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He had four brothers who predeceased him, Edward, Phillip, Terrance, and Thomas Sheehan.

A private funeral service was held at St. Giles Catholic Church on Jan. 12. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Misericordia (www.misericordia.org).

t may not be unusual in Oak Park for a couple of a certain age to decide to sell their family home after their children have grown and moved away. It is also not rare for that home to be an architecturally significant home. After all, we are talking about Oak Park.

The village, with its abundance of architecturally significant older homes, has long been a draw for those with ties to the architectural history of the Chicago-area. While their circumstances may not be unusual, Joan and Jim Collins are unique in their long history in the village, their work in the architectural field, their E.E. Roberts house and the imprint they will leave behind when they leave Oak Park.

Jim Collins was born in Oak Park and raised in Chicago and says his Oak Park roots are deep. His mother went to high

school with Ernest Hemingway, as did his father. The war memorial in Scoville Park bears a family member’s name.

When Jim met Joan, she was a school teacher in Cicero living in Oak Park, so the couple decided to set down roots in the village after they married.

They became the third owners of 419 Randolph St. in the 1970s and set about making the home their own. An architectural engineer, Jim Collins liked the connection to well-known Oak Park architect E.E. Roberts.

“He designed hundreds of homes in Oak Park, and his homes tend to have an excellent floor plan,” Joan said. “This house is one of his smaller plans, but it lives well.”

Long-term project Jim recalls that when they purchased the home, the boiler bore the installation date of 1911, and everything in the house was painted mint green. He and Joan stripped paint off the original woodwork and removed elaborate drapes to showcase the original leaded-glass windows.

“Even the attic has nine leaded glass win-

dows,” said Jim. Having an architectural engineer in the family came in handy when the front steps of the house had to be rebuilt, and Joan notes that Jim’s skills were again called into play when they replaced their one-car garage with a 2.5-car garage with a studio above.

As they raised their three sons in the home, Jim and Joan at first used that studio space as a work-from-home office. As Jim’s business expanded, they turned their basement into a workspace, complete with kitchenette.

Jim took advantage of his work as a reclamation architect to add character to the home. While working on a project downtown, the project’s contractor uncovered an alley of old brick and gave some of the castoffs to Jim, who used them to create a garden path behind his home.

When the South Side Francis Apartments were town down in the 1970s, Jim used some of the building’s historic frieze to create a unique exterior focal point on his home.

Jim Collins worked on several projects in and around Oak Park, and one that will always tie him to the village is the apartment building at Madison Street and Wisconsin Avenue in the village.

When he was working on the plans, his mother had recently passed away, so he named the street Susan Collins Lane to honor her memory. The building represents another generation of the family as well.

The Collins’ son, who is a portrait painter living in Florence, Italy, created the sculptures decorating the exterior of the building.

All of her time living in Oak Park and working alongside her husband also inspired a love of architecture in Joan. She writes about architecture, and one of her first books featured architect Louis Sullivan as a character.

As they look forward to the next chapter of their lives, the Collinses have fond memories of their neighborhood and time in Oak Park. Joan says the neighborhood near Elmwood and Randolph was an idyllic place to
