How can this new year be a better one for your child?
I
t is a new year. It started happy enough. Then you got your child’s latest report card. Now it is confirmed, your student is in serious need of help to save this school year. The bad news from school turns a happy New Year sour. It can be bad in different ways for different grades, but bad news whenever for your child is still bad. For example, this may be the second half of third grade – and if it stays bad then she or he could repeat the year. What can a parent do? It’s now when you really start worrying! You look for help because you know good education means a good life for your child. However, the search is not easy especially if you need professional help and not just a homework helper. Too often parents of students with special education needs, or bad school attitude, or heavy family issues can’t find affordable tutors to help their struggling second to tenth graders. Universities or Social Service Associations are worth seeking out but have a long waiting list. You need an alternative opportunity for special services that is here, in your neighborhood The sad news of failing grades or low self-esteem this un-happy New Year is just as bad for your sixth grade student who can possibly suffer from by repeating this benchmark school year and can jeopardize his or her chances for a select high school acceptance. The bad news of a bad report card this January doesn’t stop for your ninth grade high school student because as most teachers and parents know-the first year since the tone for the rest of high school! Now every assignment and test counts because your child’s future is on the line. These days, prospects for college scholarships and good paying jobs are bad and worst. Time doesn’t stop even if the lies of many government leaders try to paint a rosy picture of the country’s future. You know the truth that by 10th grade the issues that lead to academic failure, dropout, and a lifetime of learning disability have gone too far for yours and our children. You have to get help now! You have thought or tried school interventions, doctors, hospitals, boot camps, afterschool programs, bribes or even threats but they didn’t or won’t help? You need the best that professionals can offer without paying a hardship-causing price for it. The latest research shows that specialized, intensive, motivating, and culturally relevant tutoring can turn around failures best identified after 1st grade. We have it at now at Dr. Bill’s Learning Centers. We are specialized for special students with learning disability-LD, ADD, anxiety and poor motivation.
Dr. Bill’s learning CenterS offer a family focused, holistic, specialized tutoring program with an interdisciplinary team dedicated to bettering improving the educational outcomes for children like yours. Unlike most other tutoring centers, we help bridging the ‘academic achievements gap’ with creative holistic rehabilitative services. We offer individualized, one on one supplemental special instruction by trained tutors and much more. Our unique integrated services include art therapy, which helps build alternative learning venues, creative skills and stress management. Dr. Bill’s learning CenterS ‘ nutrition counseling helps educate families to connect a healthy and balanced diet to better brain development. Our mentoring service complements the academic assistance to uplift and empower our students. All our efforts focus on mastering fundamental skills that will strengthen your child’s self-confidence, organization and cognitive skills for life. We have put it all together so that the right tutor can ‘get it right’ for your child! We look forward to answering your questions, serving your special students, or just giving you an encouraging word to put the Happy back into your new year 2014. Your children deserve as do all of our children- a happy and productive future. Don’t give up! If you don’t call us, then please call someone now for help, before it’s too late! Best wishes this season from Dr. Bill and staff.

Learning Through All Aspects of Life at Keystone Montessori
C
hildren come from far and wide to Keystone Montessori, a school that has gained the reputation as one of the country’s premier Montessori schools. “The beauty of Montessori education is that it takes into consideration the whole child,” says Vicki Shea, Keystone’s administrative coordinator. “The physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of children are nurtured as well as their academic development and each child is respected as an individual with unique abilities.” If you’re wondering what Montessori education is all about, it’s based on the teachings of Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman doctor who went on to become a renowned educator. From her observations of the natural development of children, she believed that a child’s indepen dence, selfesteem and love of learning could flourish, given the right environment and with guidance from a properly trained teacher. Today, 100 years later, there are Montessori schools all over the world. Keystone has a class for twoyear olds, primary classes for 36 year olds, junior elementary classes for 69 year olds, senior elementary classes for 912 year olds and a middle school. There are parent/infant classes also. One of the hallmarks of Montessori education is grouping together children of
different ages. “In this way children learn from each other,” says Shea. “It also helps the older children learn a sense of responsibility toward the younger ones.” Children learn by work ing with specially designed ‘materials’ in an ageappropriate environment which stimulates the senses and encourages exploration. The children are busy, each one involved in doing something either individually or in small groups. In one of the primary classrooms a threeyear old is mopping the floor, and a fiveyear old is counting with a bead chain. In the junior elementary classroom a student is researching snakes and in another part of the room, a group of students is analyzing the grammatical parts of a sentence with the teacher. “Many of Montessori’s observations about how children learn have been borne out by recent research showing that children have windows in their development when they can best absorb things like language, music and math,” explains Shea. The school is proud of its consistently high academic achievement but places great emphasis on helping children become wellrounded, responsible members of society. Keystone Montessori is holding an Open House on Sunday, January 26, 2–4 pm. The school is located at 7415 W. North Ave., River Forest. 708/366-1080.

Intercultural Montessori Language School, Truly Dedicated
R
ecently I had the privilege to create a short documentary video for Intercultural Montessori Language School, titledCitizens of the World. Throughout several planning visits and three days to videotape, I was able to witness in full a dynamic atmosphere and approach to teaching that any parent should regard as affirmation of Intercultural as a truly extraordinary and inspiring place for education. Beyond the practical real world (and worldly) rewards gained through a dual-language experience, what is also nurtured at Intercultural is a genuine love for learning. From the moment they are dropped off by parents and greeted by teachers, the students’ sense of purpose is palpable. They are open-minded and focused. They demonstrate initiative. Within minutes, there is evidence of the target language serving as a tool to explore an entire curriculum: geography, history, science, mathematics, botany, zoology, and the arts. The foundations established at the primary level are built upon at the elementary level, where the ability to speak, read, and write in two languages truly blossoms.
flow, an awareness, and an appreciation for the relationships between people, places, things, and even ideas. There is also balance. Balance between independence and interaction with others. Between personal goals and global considerations. Between self-discovery and structured guidance. The fact is, teachers move fluidly and intuitively throughout the classroom to steer each student with the precise amount of direction and guidance needed, and to maintain the expected order, behavior, and etiquette. In one moment, teachers are peers and partners to the students. In another, they are shepherds and stewards. During circle time, when the class gathers to read stories and sing songs, the teachers command the attention of the entire group. Academic materials are explored in depth and detail. We owe Intercultural teachers thanks and gratitude for developing our children into better students, and even better people. They are truly dedicated and obviously love what they do.
More important, it is clear Intercultural students develop respect for themselves and others. They exude confidence and caring. They engage in activities with a big picture mindset: a multicultural world to which we are all personally connected and responsible. From life practices to academic studies, there is a

elp your child get more out of high school by setting them up for success. Give them the advantage of a Walther education. Since 1954, Walther has been the chosen school for families looking for a superior college preparatory education built on a Christian foundation. We are proud to have 100% college acceptance for our graduating seniors each year, and the highest per student scholarship average in the Chicagoland area. Beyond that what makes Walther MORE? First, you’ll experience more here, exploring your intellect, spirituality, leadership abilities, athleticism, musicality, and artistry – sometimes all in the same day. Second, our culture make us seem more a university than high school with managed class sizes, advanced courses, candid discussions, and a collaborative faculty. Third, you can someday change the world, because like Walther alumni before them, our seniors are accepted into the best colleges across the country. Fourth, our school’s diversity equips you with the empathy, communication skills and social awareness to connect with anyone,
anywhere. Fifth, we ensure you develop the academic fundamentals, confidence and character to become the student you are meant to be. Finally, no matter your religion, you’ll find Christ here, and He will find you, enlighten you, inspire you, and guide you, in good times and bad. “Whenever I think back about my years at Walther, I literally get a smile on my face. Those four years were truly some of the best years of my life,” quote from a Walther Alum. We are here to help your child grow. Choosing the right high school is an important decision in not only the student’s life, but the entire family. Choose MORE.
