Laugh and Learn at Blast Improv

last Improv is now beginning registration for our Spring sessions! Our Youth Improv Programs are geared towards grades 3 through 8. Classes will be starting in early April and will run for six weeks and will be held at Madison Street Theater (1010 W Madison St). We learn best by doing, so while your kids are playing improv games, they won’t even know it, but they will gain some valuable skills. Improv is all about creating something out of nothing, so getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and turning it to an advantage is a natural side effect of playing improv games. Kids will explore decision making skills, heightened listening and observation techniques. All while having a BLAST! Blast Improv Teacher Rachel Miller says, ”Kids are marvelous, natural improvisers because they haven’t learned to limit and edit themselves, and with improv, kids learn that what might make them different elsewhere is what makes them an invaluable member of an ensemble. I like to think that improv classes are like team sports without the competition and push-ups. Also, everyone invests in a shared idea that they discover and create together, and they get paid in laughs and confidence.”

Blast Improv is run by Caroline Rauch who for fourteen years was honored to hold various Producer positions at The Second City in Chicago and Detroit. As an Oak Park mom, she is excited to bring her experience and connections with the best improvisers in Chicago to Blast Improv and bring the fun of improv to the area.

Coding camp keeps kids minds sharp while having fun.

his summer, Code Play Learn opens in Oak Park with week long camp sessions for students entering 2nd through 8th grades. Their mission is to provide kids with computer coding skills they can use to prepare for educational success in the 21st century. Each session mixes interpersonal play time with screen time. So students develop their ability to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically in a fun and friendly environment.

There are three different camp sessions available. At Computer Game Creation camp, students will use MIT’s Scratch programming platform to create their own interactive stories, games and animations. At App Creation Camp, kids will use MIT’s App Inventor programming platform to create Android Apps they can use on Android mobile devices. And at Lego Robotics Camp, kids will use the Lego WEDO programming platform to create their own Lego robotics programs. Code Play Learn provides all the necessary equipment and no previous computer programming experience is required.

There has never been a better chance to learn the art of laughter. Find a Class That Fits You.
Teen & Youth Programs – Ages 4-18 The Training Center offers 14-week spring & fall sessions, 2-week summer camps and 3-day school break camps throughout the year. Traditional improv is offered for students ages 4-18 (sorted by age groups). Specialty classes for older children and teenagers include Sketch Comedy, Stand-Up, Acting, Musical Improv, Children’s Musicals, Clowning & Creating Video Shorts. Advanced students are invited to audition to be a part of the Youth & Teen Program’s Performance Ensembles, which finish each class session with a set of 30-60 minute performances.
Adult Programs – Ages 19+ Adults can enroll in 8-week term classes, 5-Day Immersions or 3-day Intensives in various programs. Every term begins a new sequence of most of our larger programs, with several specialty classes being offered throughout the year. You can join in at anytime!
Some of our largest adult programs include:
Improvisation – Explore the fundamentals of improvisation in this popular program for those with little or no acting or improvisation experience. It’s a great way to explore your creativity, hone presentation skills, become more comfortable speaking in front of others, think on your feet quicker and expand team building skills; all while cracking each other up each class.
Comedy Writing Master the skills of writing sketch comedy in this program designed for writers and actors of all experience levels. Weekly writing assignments and in-class exercises help generate material and establish a regular writing schedule.
Acting & Scene Study This program explores the basic skills of acting. Monologues, scenes and exercises are used to examine the techniques an actor uses to establish a character. You’ll learn about auditioning and working in the business as well. Perfect for new students, or, for actors who have been out of the classroom for a while, this can be a great refresher.
These are just the beginning. Other classes available that are either more specialized or for students pursuing comedy as a career include Improv for Actors (for people with previous Acting training with little or no improv), Musical Improvisation (both advanced & for beginners), Conservatory (how to create scripted material using improv), Stand-Up, Advanced Comedy Writing, Physical Theater courses (including Clowning & Movement), Acting for the Camera, Dialects, Voice, Directing, Creating Story for TV and Film and now a Comedy Studies degree in association with Columbia College…we’re offering something new every day.

Why be a Tourist?
T
he Contemporary Music Project explores the world through music and dance. CMP offers lessons and ensembles in Latin drumming, Arabic percussion, the Irish bodhrán, and conducts musical programs in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jordan, and Ireland, giving students the opportunity to experience new places in ways not open to tourists. “I’ve spent my career drumming for dancers,” says Don Skoog, CMP’s founder. “My teaching focuses on learning about people through sound and movement. Drumming and dance are the most powerful artistic forces on the planet. I seek these experiences because there’s nothing else like them, and I want my students to share the fun with me.” Clients can prepare for trips by studying drumming at CMP. “That in itself is a rewarding experience,” Skoog says. “All you need is the interest and determination to explore the music that will allow you to share with people in other countries.” Then they can choose from different hands-on tours.

“Jordan is scheduled for July, 2015. We will study drumming, attend the Jerash Music Festival, visit Petra, and take a desert caravan. “The Dublin trip is scheduled for 2016. ecently I had the privilege to create a short documentary video for Intercultural Montessori Language School, titled Citizens of the World. Throughout several planning visits and three days to videotape, I was able to witness in full a dynamic atmosphere and approach to teaching that any parent should regard as affirmation of Intercultural as a truly extraordinary and inspiring place for education. Beyond the practical real world (and worldly) rewards gained through a dual-language experience, what is also nurtured at Intercultural is a genuine love for learning. From the moment they are dropped off by parents and greeted by teachers, the students’ sense of purpose is palpable. They are open-minded and focused. They demonstrate initiative. Within minutes, there is evidence of the target language serving as a tool to explore an entire curriculum: geography, history, science, mathematics, botany, zoology, and the arts. The foundations established at the primary level are built upon at the elementary level, where the ability to speak, read, and write in two languages truly blossoms.
From life practices to academic studies, there is a flow, an awareness, and an appreciation for the relationships between people, places, things, and even ideas. There is also balance. Balance between independence and interaction with others. Between personal goals and global considerations. Between self-discovery and structured guidance. The fact is, teachers move fluidly and intuitively throughout the classroom to steer each student with the precise amount of direction and guidance needed, and to maintain the expected order, behavior, and etiquette. In one moment, teachers are peers and partners to the students. In another, they are shepherds and stewards. During circle time, when the class gathers to read stories and sing songs, the teachers command the attention of the entire group. Academic materials are explored in depth and detail. We owe Intercultural teachers thanks and gratitude for developing our children into better students, and even better people. They are truly dedicated and obviously love what they do.
More important, it is clear Intercultural students develop respect for themselves and others. They exude confidence and caring. They engage in activities with a big picture mindset: a multicultural world to which we are all personally connected and responsible.

pring is here. The year started happy enough. Then you got your child’s latest report card. Now it is confirmed, your student is in serious need of help to save this school year.
