last Improv is now beginning registration for our Spring sessions! Our Youth Improv Programs are geared towards grades 3 through 8. Classes will be starting in early April and will run for six weeks and will be held at Madison Street Theater (1010 W Madison St). We learn best by doing, so while your kids are playing improv games, they won’t even know it, but they will gain some valuable skills. Improv is all about creating something out of nothing, so getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and turning it to an advantage is a natural side effect of playing improv games. Kids will explore decision making skills, heightened listening and observation techniques. All while having a BLAST! Blast Improv Teacher Rachel Miller says, ”Kids are marvelous, natural improvisers because they haven’t learned to limit and edit themselves, and with improv, kids learn that what might make them different elsewhere is what makes them an invaluable member of an ensemble. I like to think that improv classes are like team sports without the competition and push-ups. Also, everyone invests in a shared idea that they discover and create together, and they get paid in laughs and confidence.”

If adults want to get in on the act, they can contact Blast Improv at info@blastimprov. com or call 312-405-3639. We can put together customized workshops for your company using improv for team building, communication, or presentation skills. If you want to be a weekend warrior, let us know you’re interested in doing weekend workshops focusing on communications or presentation skills. Blast Improv instructors teach at the improv institutes in Chicago...so why head down there, when they’re coming out here to teach at Blast! Blast Improv is run by Caroline Rauch who for fourteen years was honored to hold various Producer positions at The Second City in Chicago and Detroit. As an Oak Park mom, she is excited to bring her experience and connections with the best improvisers in Chicago to Blast Improv and bring the fun of improv to the area.

inspiring and where anything is possible. We set the bar high and the kids go for it. As a one parent put it best, “By the end of the first day at the School of Rock, I knew I had found the place I was looking for. Awash in the jovial banter of been-there-done-that tales from rock and roll veterans, my son found his voice and his community.”

As you walk down our hallway, you may hear the singing of a 12-year-old working to nail the vocals of an AC/DC song, or you may see a teacher playing something on an acoustic guitar while waiting for the next lesson, or you may just cover your ears for a moment as you wander past the noise of the loud, crashing cymbals coming out of the drum rooms. Our rooms are colorful, vibrant, noisy, and full of energy and we like it that way.

You’re Funny! Prove it at The Second City Training Center - Chicago

J

ust a couple of floors above the legendary Second City at North and Wells, The Second City’s Training Center offers classes in Improv, Comedy Writing, Acting, Stand-up, Clowning and More - welcoming all ages and experience levels. There has never been a better chance to learn the art of laughter. Find a Class That Fits You.

Teen & Youth Programs – Ages 4-18 The Training Center offers 14-week spring & fall sessions, 2-week summer camps and 3-day school break camps throughout the year. Traditional improv is offered for students ages 4-18 (sorted by age groups). Specialty classes for older children and teenagers include Sketch Comedy, Stand-Up, Acting, Musical Improv, Children’s Musicals, Clowning & Creating Video Shorts. Advanced students are invited to audition to be a part of the Youth & Teen Program’s Performance Ensembles, which finish each class session with a set of 30-60 minute performances.

Adult Programs – Ages 19+ Adults can enroll in 8-week term classes, 5-Day Immersions or 3-day Intensives in various programs. Every term begins a new sequence of most of our larger programs, with several specialty classes being offered throughout the year. You can join in at anytime!

Some of our largest adult programs include:

Improvisation – Explore the fundamentals of improvisation in this popular program for those with little or no acting or improvisation experience. It’s a great way to explore your creativity, hone presentation skills, become more comfortable speaking in front of others, think on your feet quicker and expand team building skills; all while cracking each other up each class.

Comedy Writing Master the skills of writing sketch comedy in this program designed for writers and actors of all experience levels. Weekly writing assignments and in-class exercises help generate material and establish a regular writing schedule.

Acting & Scene Study This program explores the basic skills of acting. Monologues, scenes and exercises are used to examine the techniques an actor uses to establish a character. You’ll learn about auditioning and working in the business as well. Perfect for new students, or, for actors who have been out of the classroom for a while, this can be a great refresher.

These are just the beginning. Other classes available that are either more specialized or for students pursuing comedy as a career include Improv for Actors (for people with previous Acting training with little or no improv), Musical Improvisation (both advanced & for beginners), Conservatory (how to create scripted material using improv), Stand-Up, Advanced Comedy Writing, Physical Theater courses (including Clowning & Movement), Acting for the Camera, Dialects, Voice, Directing, Creating Story for TV and Film and now a Comedy Studies degree in association with Columbia College…we’re offering something new every day.

There are also ample opportunities to just try it out! Stop by the Training Center to find out about our Improv and Music Improv Jams, the Sunday night $15 DropIn Improv class or other upcoming events. Many student grads go on to careers in entertainment or apply the skills they acquire with us in their other professional lives. Give us a call at 312.664.3959 or visit secondcity.com/tc to find out more info and what would work best for you.

elp your child get more out of high school by setting them up for success. Give them the advantage of a Walther education. Since 1954, Walther has been the chosen school for families looking for a superior college preparatory education built on a Christian foundation. We are proud to have 100% college acceptance for our graduating seniors each year, and the highest per student scholarship average in the Chicagoland area. Beyond that what makes Walther MORE? First, you’ll experience more here, exploring your intellect, spirituality, leadership abilities, athleticism, musicality, and artistry – sometimes all in the same day. Second, our culture make us seem more a university than high school with managed class sizes, advanced courses, candid discussions, and a collaborative faculty. Third, you can someday change the world, because like Walther alumni before them, our seniors are accepted into the best colleges across the country. Fourth, our school’s diversity equips

you with the empathy, communication skills and social awareness to connect with anyone, anywhere. Fifth, we ensure you develop the academic fundamentals, confidence and character to become the student you are meant to be. Finally, no matter your religion, you’ll find Christ here, and He will find you, enlighten you, inspire you, and guide you, in good times and bad. “Whenever I think back about my years at Walther, I literally get a smile on my face. Those four years were truly some of the best years of my life,” quote from a Walther Alum. We are here to help your child grow. Choosing the right high school is an important decision in not only the student’s life, but the entire family.

Why be a Tourist?

T

he Contemporary Music Project explores the world through music and dance. CMP offers lessons and ensembles in Latin drumming, Arabic percussion, the Irish bodhrán, and conducts musical programs in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jordan, and Ireland, giving students the opportunity to experience new places in ways not open to tourists. “I’ve spent my career drumming for dancers,” says Don Skoog, CMP’s founder. “My teaching focuses on learning about people through sound and movement. Drumming and dance are the most powerful artistic forces on the planet. I seek these experiences because there’s nothing else like them, and I want my students to share the fun with me.” Clients can prepare for trips by studying drumming at CMP. “That in itself is a rewarding experience,” Skoog says. “All you need is the interest and determination to explore the music that will allow you to share with people in other countries.” Then they can choose from different hands-on tours.

R

“Jordan is scheduled for July, 2015. We will study drumming, attend the Jerash Music Festival, visit Petra, and take a desert caravan. “The Dublin trip is scheduled for 2016. We will drum during the day, then explore the city’s music scene at night.” Beginners are welcome and encouraged, but there are opportunities for experienced musicians as well. “We tailor each program to the participants’ needs,” Skoog says. “My job is to make sure everyone comes home feeling like they’ve had the trip of a lifetime.” To find out how you can participate on one of these incredible trips, contact Don Skoog at The Contemporary Music Project, 708.524-8605 or don@ contemporarymusicproject.com. You can also visit www.comtporarymusicproject.com.

“Our next trip is to Havana June 20th to the 27th, 2014,” Skoog says. “This will be my twenty-second trip to Cuba. Many people return with me every year to study congas, dance, and explore the city. “In February, 2015 we’re off to San Juan, Puerto Rico where we will study Bomba and Plena, then travel, sampling the island’s

ecently I had the privilege to create a short documentary video for Intercultural Montessori Language School, titled Citizens of the World. Throughout several planning visits and three days to videotape, I was able to witness in full a dynamic atmosphere and approach to teaching that any parent should regard as affirmation of Intercultural as a truly extraordinary and inspiring place for education. Beyond the practical real world (and worldly) rewards gained through a dual-language experience, what is also nurtured at Intercultural is a genuine love for learning. From the moment they are dropped off by parents and greeted by teachers, the students’ sense of purpose is palpable. They are open-minded and focused. They demonstrate initiative. Within minutes, there is evidence of the target language serving as a tool to explore an entire curriculum: geography, history, science, mathematics, botany, zoology, and the arts. The foundations established at the primary level are built upon at the elementary level, where the ability to speak, read, and write in two languages truly blossoms.

From life practices to academic studies, there is a flow, an awareness, and an appreciation for the relationships between people, places, things, and even ideas. There is also balance. Balance between independence and interaction with others. Between personal goals and global considerations. Between self-discovery and structured guidance. The fact is, teachers move fluidly and intuitively throughout the classroom to steer each student with the precise amount of direction and guidance needed, and to maintain the expected order, behavior, and etiquette. In one moment, teachers are peers and partners to the students. In another, they are shepherds and stewards. During circle time, when the class gathers to read stories and sing songs, the teachers command the attention of the entire group. Academic materials are explored in depth and detail. We owe Intercultural teachers thanks and gratitude for developing our children into better students, and even better people. They are truly dedicated and obviously love what they do.

More important, it is clear Intercultural students develop respect for themselves and others. They exude confidence and caring. They engage in activities with a big picture mindset: a multicultural world to which we are all personally connected and responsible.

How can this year be a better one for your child?

S

pring is here. The year started happy enough. Then you got your child’s latest report card. Now it is confirmed, your student is in serious need of help to save this school year. The bad news from school turns a happy New Year sour. It can be bad in different ways for different grades, but bad news whenever for your child is still bad. For example, this may be the second half of third grade – and if it stays bad then she or he could repeat the year. What can a parent do? It’s now when you really start worrying! You look for help because you know good education means a good life for your child. However, the search is not easy especially if you need professional help and not just a homework helper. Too often parents of students with special education needs, or bad school attitude, or heavy family issues can’t find affordable tutors to help their struggling second to tenth graders. Universities or Social Service Associations are worth seeking out but have a long waiting list. You need an alternative opportunity for special services that is here, in your neighborhood The sad news of failing grades or low self-esteem this is just as bad for your sixth grade student who can possibly suffer from by repeating this benchmark school year and can jeopardize his or her chances for a select high school acceptance. The bad news of a bad report card doesn’t stop for your ninth grade high school student because as most teachers and parents know-the first year since the tone for the rest of high school! Now every assignment and test counts because your child’s future is on the line. These days, prospects for college scholarships and good paying jobs are bad and worst. Time doesn’t stop even if the lies of many government leaders try to paint a rosy picture of the country’s future. You know the truth that by 10th grade the issues that lead to academic failure, dropout, and a lifetime of learning disability have gone too far for yours and our children. You have to get help now! You have thought or tried school interventions, doctors, hospitals, boot camps, afterschool programs, bribes or even threats but they didn’t or won’t help? You need the best that professionals can offer without paying a hardship-causing price for it. The latest research shows that specialized, intensive, motivating, and culturally relevant tutoring can turn around failures best identified after 1st grade. We have it at now at Dr. Bill’s Learning Centers. We are specialized for special students with learning disability-LD, ADD, anxiety and poor motivation.

Dr. Bill’s Learning Centers offer a family focused, holistic, specialized tutoring program with an interdisciplinary team dedicated to bettering improving the educational outcomes for children like yours.
