Collaboration Cut In The Middle!
Having previously served some of the top fashion brands in Italy with his own textile house, Equiline owner, Paolo Marchetto who is also an avid equestrian, has a unique understanding of the equestrian’s needs, both for funtionality and fashion. He has really married these two industries successfully. The majority of the designers that work for the company are straight from the general fashion industry, thus they know the art of true fashion design and trend inclusion. EQUILINE has an extremely impressive lineup of Sponsored Riders all of whom test ride in and add value to the ultimate design of all EQUILINE products. All of this culminates in EQUILINE being a product for the elite equestrian.
Hot for this season... Glamour and Shining Rhinestones, crystals, sequins and bling oh my…. The Marilyn Tailcoat and the Gioia short coat are extremely elegant with toneon-tone (ton-sur-ton) crystals highlighting collar, points and waistline martingale. Crystals are embedded into the adorning buttons as well. (Please note that the crystals on the tailcoat in the photo workbook from the fashion show are not the final color. They show as red on the black tailcoat but in the final product the crystals are tone-on-tone, so black-on-black and likewise for other colorways). Breeches with pocket trims highlighted in sequins and silver studs. Show shirts with lovely crystal, rhinestone and jewelry details.

A passion for horses and fashion led to the design of quality products for the equestrian sports. ZIKY products are individually crafted from the finest materials and expertly tailored. Each item is made with the utmost attention to detail. Trained as fashion designer and pattern maker in Paris and New York, Nicola Gagliardo started ZIKY in 2012. Riders can choose from the ready-to-ship line of products or design their own custom color combination. Carefully selected materials are used in the construction of every bag and saddle cover. From American thread to brass zippers, only the best quality supplies are hand picked from mostly domestic companies. “The focus for the fall collection was creating performance apparel that was designed for uninterrupted movement and a barrier against the elements,” explains Noble Outfitters Director of Sourcing & Product Development, Diane Gallagher. The Noble Outfitters’ winter apparel collection has four key concepts: warmth, comfort, protection, and visibility. These core concepts were then enhanced with some of the hottest trends in the fashion world. You will find that every item of the apparel line creatively incorporates each one of these concepts. From stretch fabrics and articulated designs to reflectivity and water repellent properties, the entire collection meets the highest standards of performance and technological advances. However, Noble Outfitters offers you so much more than the standard “keep me warm, keep me dry” philosophy of typical winter riding apparel. This fall you will see tribal designs used in a whole new way! Western riders have long appreciated the unique designs of Native American influenced prints. English riders and the rest of the world are now embracing the bold geometric patterns and the fun use of color that these vintage prints have to offer. Incredibly easy to pair with your current wardrobe, the new motifs add a pop of excitement to your winter riding outfits! The upcoming Noble Outfitters Fall Collection is sure to inspire riders from either discipline with a classic look that is intriguingly paired with these time-honored themes. The entire collection melds both brights and darks with its strength really found in just how crisp the whole look feels. Find hints of this popular trend influence in apparel and accessories come September! Touches of the Wild West don’t stop with Native American patterns! Noble Outfitters is also sprinkling the iconic bandana print across throughout their Fall apparel collection as well. With a custom designed pattern that suits both English and Western riders, the upcoming apparel and accessories are as versatile as they are stunning. From barn-style to active lifestyle, Noble Outfitters apparel makes the transition seamless and easy. The subtle bandana print will appeal to riders in breeches or jeans with its fun yet classic design! 30

www.nobleoutfitters.com The key to adding a trendy Wild West feel to a traditional English look is in the upcoming collection; pairing the vibrant primary colors with traditional neutrals. Deep, rich colors like Wine, Navy, and Black accentuate the bright pops of iconic Western prints while toning down the impact of the prints into a very wearable collection. The beautiful combination appeals to all riders and all fashion styles! For those with more horse fancy than fashion focus, the upcoming Noble Outfitters also offers traditional looks and style with inviting solid colors that stay in style for years to come! From Asphalt and Black to Wine and Heather Grey, you will see that they have the perfect athletic attire in a universal look that stands the test of time.

art equine featured artist
T
HOMAS OSTENBERG
Thomas Ostenberg was born in Nebraska, grew up on a ranch in Colorado and spent his teenage years between Colorado and Palm Beach, Florida. At an early age he learned of the grace, form and psychology of the animals he was surrounded by, both domestic and wild. He studied languages at Principia College then earned a MBA degree from Stanford University. He entered the international financial world where he became a Vice President of Citibank in Brazil and Spain. In 1986 he went freelance as an independent International Financial Consultant. At age 40, Ostenberg exchanged his successful financial career for art school. He earned a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute followed by a MA from the Royal College of Art in London aided by a grant from the Henry Moore Foundation. Now a full time sculptor, he claims his biggest break was “discovering that I wanted to be an artist”. Ostenberg maintains this change was precipitated by “fifteen years of seeing great art on three continents”. In particular he cites a major Velazquez exhibition in Madrid and a visit to the Rodin Museum in Paris. He works primarily in bronze. The power and durability of his finished pieces belie his approach to the medium, which is quite fluid and intuitive. “Sometimes I will have a bit of clay or wax in my hand, and, by playing with this lump, some image or other just begins to appear.” For his large scale works he will have a specific image in mind to represent an emotion he hopes to convey. Using his hands and later, clay tools, he defines the image. “I alternate between building up and carving back until I achieve a result I am satisfied with.” Ostenberg’s sculptures explore the theme of motion and balance. His work reflects his personal search for emotional and spiritual equilibrium. For him, the work “touches on the moment of stepping into the unknown and doing so willingly.” Ostenberg’s sculpture has been called joyful and magical, words not often applied to contemporary art. The works contain human figures and/or frequently horses on a variety of ladders, wheels and spheres, performing acrobatics and balancing acts much like those associated with the circus. This is not to say that his sculptures are frivolous or trivial. On the contrary, what may at first appear only as a feat intended to entertain is, at a deeper level, a wonderous allegory full of hope, strength, stamina, determination. The titles of Ostenberg’s sculptures (Mind Over Matter, In Search of a Clearer Understanding) give a sense of positive action that results in personal and, therefore, public benefit, and an understanding of life as a gift rather than a predicament. The sculptures themselves depict feats of enormous physical control and extraordinary mental focus. To view them is to experience triumph over contemporary malaises such as nihilism and despondency, to receive a message of calm amidst chaos - and ultimately, to feel joy in the pursuit of knowledge and truth. He divides his time with his two sons between Santa Fe, New Mexico and London. He also retains strong ties with Brazil and France where they maintain homes.

Custom Saddle Stands A perfect piece for your tack room! Susan Barackman started creating decorative saddle stands in June 2013. It was a perfect creative outlet after retiring from 27 years as a teacher. “That is like 50 years in any other career!” she jokes! Her custom master pieces are selling like hotcakes, and Susan’s Saddle Stands has become a flourishing second career.
No two exactly alike and each is signed and numbered featuring Susan’s original equine and western art. They can be designed around a theme such as barrel racing or roping, around a breed such as Arabian or Thoroughbred, and she can even paint a horse portrait on them. Repurposed leather tack, old bits, conchos, horse shoes, and even bling can be part of the design. Susan’s Saddle Stands are proving very popular with the horse show crowd as an alternative to conventional awards and also a great way to display trophy saddles!

IAN STARK and World Horse Welfare go behind the scenes at Badminton Horse Trials 2014
Three times winner of Badminton Horse Trials, Ian Stark joined World Horse Welfare at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials 2014 last week to talk horse safety with British Eventing’s National Safety Officer, Jonathan Clissold and Badminton Horse Trials vet, Richard Hepburn. The documentary film put together and edited by World Horse Welfare explores how British Eventing data collated over time has helped to improve safety, how vet services are as important as the event itself and just how much thought and preparation goes into horse welfare and safety at events like Badminton.
48
In an exclusive behind the scenes interview with vet, Richard Hepburn we hear all about the structure of the medical services provided for competing horses on cross country day and across the three-day event.
The film underlines World Horse Welfare’s support for the responsible use of horses in sport and experience as independent welfare advisor to the FEI and British Horseracing Authority that safety measures need not detract the spectacle from sporting events – thus Jonathan and Richard talk safety for the benefit of horse and rider and Ian talks of thrilling fences.
With Ian Stark fronting the film, viewers can gain an insight into how a top eventing champion would jump the fences as he expresses his feelings on some of the questions.

Two princesses, countless experts and 27 countries come together under one roof with the same aim – to
It’s the talk of equine experts all over the world; it’s the event that promises to bring together real life experience with scientific theory, only the 7th of its kind in more than 20 years, that will this time join the dots between improved welfare for working horses, donkeys and mules and improved lives for the people who depend on them. This key event, that will encompass the very unique lives of working horses and their astounding contribution to working families across countries such as Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Mexico and so many more, is hosted by World Horse Welfare and sponsored by SPANA, Donkey Sanctuary, The Brooke and WSPA. Already, 150 delegates have accepted, 27 countries will be represented and 17 speakers will be intriguing us with oral presentations that will highlight specific issues related to working horses and their owners. At the same time, 76 insightful poster displays will present the experiences and research findings of people who have devoted their lives to improving the lives of these hard working animals. To highlight the importance of the topic in international development, the 7th International *Colloquium on Working Equids boasts royal presence as two high-profile princesses, HRH The Princess Royal and HRH Princess Haya, are expected to join the affair and speak on the role that working horses play in human development. World Horse Welfare Chief Executive, Roly Owers, highlights what the collective effort at this year’s International Colloquium seeks to achieve for the world’s horses:
how much more these equids could contribute if their welfare improved and the role the veterinary profession can play, as well as what we can do now to encourage this change.” Key note speakers will explore three pivotal themes. Researcher of veterinary science and animal welfare adviser, Joy Pritchard, will describe the role that working equids play in human livelihoods and how well this is recognised; International human development expert, Tom Morrison, will explore whether a holistic approach to improving equine welfare produces better outcomes and renowned equine vet and professor, Derek Knottenbelt, will explain the role of veterinary science. After the previous two days’ theoretical discussions in London, the Colloquium party will travel to World Horse Welfare’s Glenda Spooner Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Somerset to put the theory into practice. Here there will be seven interactive zones to learn from: body condition, head and mouth comfort, foot care, disease, future research, UK, owner’s contribution and campaigning. The sections will be run by saddlers, equine dentists, farriers, vets and horse rehabilitation and campaigning teams. For more information on The Colloquium click here: www.worldhorsewelfare.org/colloquium2014 Notes: *A colloquium is a conference at which scholars or other experts present papers on, analyse, and discuss a specific topic.
“Working equids are too often invisible in communities and their key role ignored in too many livelihood systems. We aim to determine why this is so, what the reality of working equids’ contribution is and how we demonstrate it. We also intend to examine

EQUINE HEALTH
SUN, SUNBURN AND PHOTOSENSITIVITY Sunburn We humans fully comprehend the risks to ourselves with the sun and the UV rays but many fail to consider the horse until it is too late. Horses burn due to the sun similar to the human. The lighter the skin, the easier to burn. The consequences as well as the pain are similar too. As the warm reddened skin becomes sore, flakey, cracked, and even blistery, the pain emerges.
The skin is considered to be an organ and is the largest organ in the body. It protects the internal structures from harm resulting from cuts, bacteria, flies and trauma, as well as from the environmental hazards presented to the horse 24/7. Whether the sun, pollen, chemical toxins or a host of other environmental stimuli, the skin is considered to be the first line of defense.
Horses most at risk of sunburn are those kept in pastures during the day. This applies to working horses as well as retirees (below). The face and heels are commonly affected due to the non-pigmented areas and less hair coverage. These areas can be affected in all breeds when considering the white facial and leg markings. However, the general breeds and colors more commonly affected include the Appaloosa, Lipizzan, Paint, Pinto, Andalusian, cremelllo, grey, and the albino. It should also be noted that a sudden change in hormones (such as a mare in foal) could cause a horse to develop an extra sensitivity to the sun. Skin redness, scaly appearance, cracking and general soreness can be a direct result of over sun exposure. In severe cases, blisters appear and develop leakage of a clear to yellow fluid called serum. If sunburn is on the head, the horse may appear to be suddenly head shy. This is understandable as the bit, bridle or halter could come into direct contact with painful areas. Additionally, if the horse sheds out

in clumps and uncovered (hairless) skin is left exposed to the sun while the new coat grows in, the potential for body blistering increases significantly.
Secondary photosensitization occurs when the liver is damaged and results in the inability to excrete phylioerythrin, which is a compound formed by microbial degradation of chlorophyll in the gut. Normally removed by the liver and excreted in the bile, when the liver is diseased or damaged, it allows the circulation of it in the blood stream thus interacting at the skin level with the sun. Clover as well as alfalfa has been linked to secondary photosensitization due to existing liver damage. Initially, liver damage can be the result of a bacterial, viral, fungal infection, a liver assault due to a toxin as well as liver cancer or other disease/condition, which may be present.
There are options available to help reduce the potential of sunburn in horses. The easiest is to avoid a lot of sun exposure by stabling during the day at peak sun (UV) exposure time. This allows some sun exposure but not in huge doses. Another preventative measure is sunscreen. There are not many equine specific sunscreens on the market although some fly sprays contain a small amount of sunscreen. Many owners use the human version such as the children’s sunscreen products. Many are even tinted so that the covered area is easily seen. Full-face masks (right) are still another option. Some of these masks come with UV protection as well as muzzle coverings. In cases where the entire body is at risk, a fly sheet may be appropriate. Photosensitization The skin condition known as photosensitization (sensitivity to the sun) is not the sunburn as described above. It differs in that it can affect both pigmented and non-pigmented skin areas. Primary photosensitization is commonly exhibited by ingesting certain plant or chemical toxins. When the horse consumes the agent, it circulates to the skin areas where it is then exposed to the UV rays. For example, buckwheat and St. John’s wort can cause this reaction. Additionally, many medicines such as tetracycline, sulfa antibiotics, and phenothiazine tranquilizers can also act as a primary photosensitization agent. Horses never before having sun issues can now be affected.
Contact Sensitivity Although sometimes confused with sunburn and photosensitivity, direct contact sensitivity is a result of a chemical or mechanical reaction to the skin or skin injury. Some horses are very sensitive to various chemicals in fly sprays. Saddling up over the application site thus compressing the irritant into sweaty skin can then acerbates the reactions. Buttercups in the pasture can also cause a local irritation at the muzzle, as can other irritant weeds. Because of the extensiveness of contact sensitivity, it will not be evaluated in this article and is not generally considered to be a direct partner to sun related conditions.

Prevention and Treatment Minor reactions can be treated with skin creams and ointments as recommended by your veterinarian. What can be used is directly related to the type and severity of the sun related disorder. Treatments generally include eliminating sun exposure and direct wound treatment. This can take from several days to weeks, depending on severity, in order to return to a normal routine. Additionally, constant lesions occurring over a period of time can lead to skin cancer, not unlike that of the human. Prevention is the key to sun related conditions. The pain and distress associated with sunburn and photosensitivity can be eliminated or at least minimized thus making the summer enjoyable for both you and your horse. Think about it and make everyone more comfortable.

Melanoma
– cells run amuck

It is not unusual to see grey horses with lumps under their tails, around their lips and over other areas of their body. Not as commonly we find similar lumps on chestnut or sorrel horses as well, in the same areas. Melanomas are linked to hair color by the same hormones that determine which hair or skin color will be expressed in the animal and where the patterns will be. Those hormones are similar to hormones that determine many other activities within the horse, including which sex the animal will be and how well it will express that trait.
In addition to the need for protein production, the Hormones, particularly estrogens, influence many cells also need input from the nervous system. We functions in the body and can be mimicked by many can for the sake of simplicity call that the SPARK that other substances. In our environment, prior to the turns them on or off. Animals whose nervous systems 1970’s there were about 750 known estrogen mimare not working smoothly will be more likely to develics that could be found naturally occurring in plants op melanomas than animals that live more peaceful and animals (including bugs). Because of the boom lives. in manufacturing of manmade chemicals, including plastics and pesticides, many more have been introduced. Animals and humans Here is how it works. are exposed on a daily basis; Prior to the 1970’s there were about 750 When hormones begin signalnow there are approximately known estrogen mimics; now there are ing cells to turn on the color 75,000 estrogen mimics. With approximately 75,000 gene, the cell produces a certhis many compounds that tain amount of color pigment can attach to the estrogen called melanin. Melanin can be black or brown (redreceptor site in the cell, often the cell is confused as dish). Different levels of melanin and kinds of melanin to which protein chains to turn on. produce different colors. Lack of melanin production produces white skin seen in truly white horses. horses. Large amounts of melanin produce the black skin often associated with black and grey haired horses. Chestnut or sorrel horses have skin color somewhat between the grey mousey color and the true black skin produced by brown melanins. There are some in-between melanins as well. The black/brown melanins can act as oxidizing and reducing agents, while lighter melanins are tightly bound to proteins, and can also act as a binding agent for drugs and chemicals.
activity serves as a unique molecular sensor and transducer of noxious signals and as regulator of local homeostasis. In keeping with these multiple roles, melanogenesis is controlled by a highly structured system, active since early embryogenesis and capable of superselective functional regulation that may reach down to the cellular level represented by single melanocytes. Indeed, the significance of melanogenesis extends beyond the mere assignment of a color trait.” Andrze, 2004 The most common pigment disorders are not disorders of melanin quality, but rather of the pigment-producing cell itself, which may be reduced in number, absent, or hyperactive and commonly, with regional localization. As already discussed, this pigment excess (hypermelanosis) can be associated with inflammatory responses, as in keloid scars, or with local abnormal melanocyte function, as in dysplastic nevi or malignant melanoma.
Levels of natural hormone production change over the course of the animal’s life. They are affected by many things including weight, nutrition, reproductive stages (pregnant vs. open mares), and season. So far you can see that how the skin responds to the environment of the animal depends on a lot of seemingly different factors. (More in depth information about how the seasons affect your horse can be found in our 18 hour course “Cellular Healing” at www.animalchiropracticeducation. com.) For the sake of getting to the bottom line on melanomas, let’s expect that there are many exceptions to the basic rules I am going to put down here, but that for the most part these rules usually apply.
Can Too Much Sunlight Cause Melanomas? Sunlight, or better UV light acts as a stimulant to the production of melanin. In humans throughout evolution the amount of UV light to which they were exposed regulated not only how much melanin the cells could produce, but how much vitamin D was produced.
In scientific studies, subjects with higher serum estrogen concentrations tend to develop increased skin pigmentation, suggesting that estradiol may be involved in the pathogenesis of melisma. The effects of estrogens on melanogenesis are uncertain. When a horse with higher levels of black melanin has a high level of exposure to manmade estrogens, and a nervous system that provides a lot of stress signals to the body, that horse has more chance of producing cells that go on producing excess melanocytes. “Cutaneous melanin pigment plays a critical role in camouflage, mimicry, social communication, and protection against harmful effects of solar radiation. Melanogenesis is under complex regulatory control by multiple agents interacting via pathways activated by receptor-dependent and -independent mechanisms, in hormonal, immunological fashion. Because of the multidirectional nature and similar character of the melanogenesis modifying agents, describing them is complex as they work in protecting the skin but are regulated by many of the factors that stimulate and inhibit their production. Within the context of the skin as a stress organ, melanogenic 58
In the horse, skin color and hair color differ widely among breeds and within a breed thanks in part to human cross breeding of animals. Hair shaft color reflects not just the quantity and quality of the pigments produced by hair bulb melanocytes, but also the manner in which they are transferred to the hair shaft. Coat color mutations, besides being associated with differences in melanin synthesis, can also be due to abnormalities in the formation of the melanosome and their transference to keratinocytes (hair producing cells). Abnormal transfer of melanin granules into the hair shaft can also lead to variation in pigmentation of the animal. In studies done on mice, where reduction in coat color is due to mutation of the gene encoding for myosin scientists learned mature melanosomes in normal mice can transport melanin while mutated cells cannot transport melanin. This discovery stimulated a new field of study in humans whereby the

diluted color of hair occurs in immunodeficiency patients. In animals, it is not uncommon for greys to derive from a darker color. This is commonly referred to as “the greying gene” and often seen in Appaloosa horses, but can also be seen in other breeds such as Arabs and Lipizzaner horses. In the Appaloosa breed the immunodeficiency is later noted as other ailments such as moon blindness. These greying gene horses can also develop melanomas as a part of their immunodeficiency.
How can you prevent development of melanomas?
While the cause of melanomas is part genetic and part environmental, you can reduce the likelihood of them. Here are some methods that are available to horse owners: 1) Remove as many environmental chemicals that will affect the production of melanin in a negative way. This includes using fly sprays and shampoos that do not contain estrogen mimics. 2) Keep your horse away from pastures that have used glyphosate to reduce weed growth. Read all your weed control products to find which ones use this. 3) Be sure to give your grey or greying horses plenty of horse environments like lots of pasture and room to move around. Keeping them in the stall can be more stressful. 4) Make sure to feed balanced omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as these help to reduce the effects of UV light on melanocytes. 5) Vitamin D works with melanocytes to encourage Calcium to cross the intestinal membrane. This is important for animals in reducing and avoiding production of melanomas. Animals in precancerous states will have a tendency to excrete more calcium into their hair than normal animals. Hair tests can determine how much calcium is being excreted into the hair shaft. Ask your veterinarian or request a nutritional consult below. 6) Normal levels of calcium can be depleted by eating grains. All grains contain phytic acid, which reduces calcium uptake in the G.I. track. Calcium is important in cellular function and normal melanin production. 7) In some animals serotonin has been shown to reduce the activity of melanomas and reduced the amount of melanin within melanocytes. Ask your veterinarian about treatment with serotonin. References: Melanin Pigmentation in Mammalian Skin and Its Hormonal Regulation Andrzej Slominski , Desmond J. EQUINE health
Advanced Equine Studies
Innovative DVDs For Education and Entertainment
“[This DVD] takes education to a whole other level.” That’s how The International Equestrian Shop describes the new series of DVDs called Advanced Equine Studies. It seems everyone is more visually oriented these days and I was frustrated that so much of what was called educational material, print or video, just scratched the surface of the topic at hand. Whether I read a magazine article or watched video, I usually came away with little more than sound bites on very complicated subject matter. Like most busy people, I found myself bored or I would simply run out of time trying to find useful and accurate information. I got thinking about how to bring a better educational experience to horse lovers and how to format it in a way that would make learning fun and easy. I’m Andrea Steele and I a few years ago I formed Mouse Hole Farms Productions with a mission of artful and in-depth DVD learning experiences for equestrians worldwide. Our first program in the series of DVDs called Advanced Equine Studies is The Horse’s Respiratory System. Similar to show that you might watch on The Discovery Channel, we bring together top experts from all aspects of the equine industry to explore topics of interest to riders and equine caregivers. Viewers come away with a well-rounded base of knowledge to be better horse people and make more informed decisions for their horse’s care on a daily basis.
60
Key for me is to give viewers access to people and places not seen before. To do this the Horse’s Respiratory System DVD follows a horse through the lung function laboratory at The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in Massachusetts to see how respiratory dysfunction is diagnosed and treated. Viewers get a front row seat in the classroom for discussions on respiratory anatomy, lung function, and infectious and non-infectious respiratory disease with Tufts’ Dr. Melissa Mazan, a leading authority on equine respiratory health. Dr. Mazan’s charismatic style is riveting as she relates each respiratory topic to your daily experience with your horse.
www.EliteEquestrian.us
The in-depth nature of Advanced Equine Studies takes viewers to Washington D.C. architect John Blackburn at one of his worldclass equestrian facilities. John talks about how his barn and arena designs promote respiratory health. He also explains how many of these features can be easily incorporated into existing structures. Then, Canadian equine nutrition expert and author, Karen Briggs, discusses how to feed horses for sustained respiratory health. On the lighter side, Abigail Nemec, director of the equine program at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut, presents a variety of “Horse Chat” topics, including equine breath holding, how to take the horse’s respiration rate, and understanding the horse’s sense of smell. Our focus on beautiful horses and locations is purposeful. Like paging through a picture book, design ideas seen onscreen will inspire viewers to improve the health and safety environment for their own animals. As a consistent friendly face throughout the respiratory program, long-time rider and wild horse advocate, Maureen VanDerStad displays a keen ability to interact with each professional and ask pertinent questions to make topics accessible to every level rider.

People have asked me why respiratory? As if to say—is that really interesting? My answer is simple: Yes, it is so interesting! It is estimated that 80% of all stabled horses have some level of inflammation in their airways and many of these horses go on to develop “heaves” as they age. Yet few of us know how to recognize the subtle signs of airway inflammation, or avoid its escalation to a larger health problem. While we react very quickly to any sign lameness, it’s easy to take our horse’s breathing for granted. Equally important is that the same health risks exist for the riders and caregivers that spend so much time in the same barns and arenas as the horses! The Advanced Equine Studies production team is busy with our next DVD: Saddle Fit for Horse and Rider. A launch date for the fall of 2014 is anticipated. Other topics are in various stages of production as we explore all the horse’s bodily systems and other topic of interest. Even the most experienced professional will learn from Advanced Equine Studies programs. But also important is to develop the artful and entertainment value of each program to entice even non-riding members of the family to watch with interest. I am encouraged by the fact that equestrian centers and veterinary offices can use Advanced Equine Studies DVDs to host “pizza and a movie” evenings for their clients. It all goes back to our original goal of developing fun and easy ways to access quality education for the welfare of the horse. In addition to the general riding market, the DVDs are intended for use in colleges with equine degree programs, barn managers and trainers, and equine veterinary technicians. We are also working with industry organizations to use Advanced Equine Studies as continuing education for professional designations. For more information about Advanced Equine Studies and the entire production team, go to AdvancedEquineStudies.com and like us on Facebook. About Andrea Steele A life-long amateur rider and dedicated horse owner, Andrea co-authored the critically acclaimed book, Lessons in Lightness: The Art of Educating the Horse (The Lyons Press, 2004) with Tennesseebased trainer Mark Russell. Her belief in the philosophy of “riding in lightness” and in the benefits of tai chi and qi gong exercise for the equestrian inspired the production of Mouse Hole Farm’s first DVD, Riding with Chi: Your Pathway to Energy Mastery. The new series of Advanced Equine Studies DVDs launched in December, 2014 with the release of The Horse’s Respiratory System. The Horse’s Respiratory System is 5 ½ hours of programming (on 3-disks) and priced to be part of everyone’s library at $59.95 and is available on the website and selected online retailers. The DVD is available on AdvancedEquineStudies.com and on select online retailers including: TheHorseStudio.com.

Human to Horse
Sense

Horses use their senses to relate, keeping that in mind will make our horsemanship better. Horsemanship is by definition the relationship between a man and a horse. The senses are everyone’s open window on the environment. Different stimuli reach individuals through specific receptors located in the sense organs. Based on what is perceived, and with the filter of the personality, everyone carries out behavior, expressing their thoughts and relating to others, who will perceive and will respond alike. Some information, like the stimuli that cause instinctive behavior, are more immediate in eliciting responses; other stimuli need to be learned to work, and usemore complex neural paths. This is true for human beings and horses, but with the very important difference implied in the fact that we belong to different animal species. We need to always keep this in mind in horsemanship.
proposed situation. The biggest problem in horsemanship lies within the meaning of the actions, which can be different for human and horse, both social individuals, but with very different lifestyle. An example is when man offers a carrot to a horse as a reward; the action can be perceived by the horse as an act of submission. For this very reason, the importance of a clear communication is paramount, and knowing how to utilize the equine senses is fundamental, because they are the only truly immediate vehicle of the information that reaches the individual.
We belong to different In an open and spontaneous communication between human and two main situations can be animal species. horses present: the horse voluntarily takes
Work and Relationship H2H distinguishes between work and relationship in the interactions amongst human beings and horses. This fact brings a new dimension in the game, that lays half way between science, which observes horses from afar, and traditional horsemanship in which man closely interact with horses. The innovation that we want to highlight is the fact that the horse is free and can choose whether to participate or not in the 70
part in the action, because he understands the situation, benefits from it and is interested, or the horse gets away from the action.

“ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES OF HORSESHOEING” The perfect companion to our NEW Online Course!
An award-winning interactive farrier skills book that serves as a foundation guide to trimming and shoeing horses. • A cutting-edge “how-to” manual written by trusted authorities • Color photos, drawings, and QR codes that take you to video demonstrations online • Perfect for farriers, equine professionals, and any owner who cares about their horse’s health and well-being The five horse senses and horsemanship Just like us human beings, horses have their five senses: sight, hearing, feel, smell and taste. Normally, even in the interactions with other domestic species, human beings choose to employ the modality that is more immediate for us, going through sounds for cueing another individual, while the animals have to learn the meaning of our cues to properly respond to it. Knowing how to approach a horse, staying in contexts familiar for the horses (like reciprocal presence, position, movement and primary needs) can really help us in communicating with them. Working with horses without holding them allows, requires and teaches how to modulate the communication through the senses. This is a spontaneous kind of communication, which often eliminates the need for horses to have to learn how to respond to cues. Facts about Human to Horses Sensing There are some important differences between how human beings and horses use the senses. In this setting we are not going to cover the subject in a comprehensive manner, but just to mention some useful tips on how to best get our information to horses in a spontaneous and direct way.

Sight The horse has a wider field of vision, due to the position of the eyes on the individual’s head, and has the ability of efficiently employing a monocular mode and a binocular mode. Horses will primarily use the sense of sight to communicate in a detailed fashion with other individuals, while man uses sound and the sense of hearing to get information across to others. The sense of sight is paramount when working with a horse without tack, it is our only connection to him. If a horse is looking at something he is also paying attention to it. Hearing The sounds that horses can articulate are very simple, but they can definitely control the intensity and rhythm when they “talk” with their keen. When we talk to them, the intensity and rhythm of a sound matter more than the meaning of the words we use. The equine ear is not just able to passively catch sounds. It has a very pronounced ability to move which helps horses in localizing the source of a sound, and gives them the ability to express their personality and mood in a certain situation. When communicating with a horse that is not tied to a rope it is essential to pay attention to the horse’s ears in detail. Feel In horsemanship, the sense of feel becomes the primary channel of communication when we ride, given that the horse cannot see us because of our position. In other situations horses use the sense of feel to explore things that look safe enough to touch, action that they carry out after having blown on the object to explore it. Timid horses stretch their necks to feel something with the tip of their nose. This part of the horse’s head is very capable of collecting detailed information; it also helps in the selection of food.

Have you ever thought about being able to communicate with a horse as immediately as you do with your friends? Have you ever wondered about what really happens when horses and human beings openly meet? Consider the possibility of a new approach to an old topic. H2H is for horse owners, riders, breeders, amateurs and professionals, or just anyone who is interested in horses. Come and learn about how horses live, think, learn, communicate and play, from their point of view, a dimension still widely unexplored in traditional horsemanship. The purpose is to build a solid foundation for the Human to Horse relationship, and put it in practice in any situation we find ourselves interacting with horses on the ground or in the saddle, with and without tack. Through feel a horse perceives, in a very detailed way, things that are as subtle as the weight of a fly on their skin. When we rely on feel for communicating with horses we need to very finely gage our cues, because the horse can be that aware.

Smell and Taste Horses combine the use of smell and taste, and use these senses when they are far or close to the source of the information, but most of the time human beings do not keep in mind the information they can convey to a horse through it.

We feel that these senses require more consideration from us than what normally is given. In our courses we dedicate a lot of attention to the use of food in horsemanship, and highlight its effectiveness as a communication tool. In a natural herd of horses the ranking is based on “grazing rights”, and territory, while in horsemanship many are still trying to achieve leadership with words and force.
