BOW BRICKHILL STABLES Where Horsemanship Matters

EVENTING TRAINER- TIK MAYNARD

Our head trainer, Tik Maynard, has enjoyed success in the show ring, both in Canada and internationally. He spent six years on the Canadian National Team competing in the Modern Pentathlon. During that time he received recognition as Junior National Champion (2003) and Senior National Champion (2005 and 2007). He competed at the Pan-American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, in 2007, at three World Championships and eleven World Cups. He was recently long-listed to the Canadian eventing team for the London 2012 Olympics. Tik has been a working student for David and Karen O’Connor (Eventing), Johann Hinnermann (Dressage), Ingrid Klimke (Dressage and Eventing) and Bruce Logan (Horsemanship and Cutting). Tik joins us from Market Street Inc., where he worked as an assistant trainer for five-time Olympian, Anne Kursinski (Show Jumping).

HUNTER/JUMPER TRAINER - ASHLEY PATE

Ashley heads up our hunter/jumper program. Ashley recently joined the Bow Brickhill Stables team from Palermo Show Stable where she worked as an instructor and trainer, campaigning Palermo’s horses in both the hunter and jumper rings and coaching students at shows. She was awarded the High Point Trainer Award for the Winter Circuit in 2010-2011. Prior to joining Palermo, Ashley worked for Grand Prix professionals Mahais Hollberg and Thaisa Erwin out of Apex, NC and Ocala, FL for Apex Equestrian Center, showing “Albert Adler” in High Adult Jumpers and taking “Zampano II” to the championship in Low Adult Equitation at HITS in Ocala, FL. Ashley started riding at the age of 9 in North Carolina with Dressage and Hunt Seat Trainer Annee Saunders, and competed through high school in many local and regional championships and in the Child/Adult Jumpers on the C and A circuits in North Carolina. At college, she competed on the North Carolina University Equestrian Team for 4 years.

We also offer Colt Starting. Tik Maynard on colt starting: “How your horse is started has implications on how he will connect with you in years to come. It is of utmost importance that he be started correctly. I want him to be relaxed when you get on, and I want him to trot willingly forward when you put your leg on him. My goal is cooperation, not submission. You will achieve more if your horse is a willing participant rather than a sparring partner”.

Our winter issue wouldn’t be complete without a look at the Winter Equestrian Festival- this time told from a competitor’s perspective, what a treat! The Interagro Lusitano Farm is gearing up for their annual auction of these magnificent steeds- but this year there’s a new twist. They’ve created a whole experience that your entire family will want to be part of- even the nonequestrians! You’ll find many treats in this issue, including a heart warming story of a boy and horse who bonded instantly and later found they had much more in common- each has only a single kidney! The Chisholm Gallery has again provided stunning art work to enjoy, there are new products and saddle reviews, informative equine health articles, and much more. Please tell us what you think of Elite Equestrian, and you will be entered in a drawing to win a beautiful bracelet like the one below from Dressage Deluxe. Cheers!

Have an Unforgettable Experience at the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival

As I sit down at edge of the ring, I watch the course designer put the last finishing touches on the track and the jump crew carefully maneuver around the water truck, hesitant to get sprayed. It’s a Saturday morning at the pristine Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) and I am about to compete in a jumper class at the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF). Adrenaline and nerves rush through me as I look out into the ring at the professionally painted jumps and perfectly manicured footing, complete with a clear-blue Florida sky. Even though I have been coming to Wellington, Florida, for ten years now, I still consider it an honor to compete at a competition of this quality, and quite honestly… there isn’t a horse show in the world that compares.

“Saturday Night Lights” Returns Bigger and Better The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center is a 160-acre “Equestrian Lifestyle Destination.” It is a place made up of intense equestrian competition, world-class accommodations, and endless entertainment. Every year over 250,000 spectators travel from all over the world to the impressive venue. The FTI WEF runs for twelve weeks, this year from January 9th until March 31st. The competition runs Wednesday through Sunday, with the main events on Saturday nights, a series called “Saturday Night Lights.” Aside from a Grand Prix class every week, “Saturday Night Lights” holds events that are unique to FTI WEF. This year the $55,000 Nespresso Battle of the Sexes will be the first Saturday night event, a title the females will have to defend for the fifth year in a row. A very distinct class to the FTI WEF is the FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge, which will be held on January 26th. The event serves as a way for the equestrian world to give back to the local community. This year, thirty-two Palm Beach County charities will be randomly selected and given the chance to win 100% of the money raised. I personally competed in this event last year and I cannot even begin to explain the thrill one gets as they enter the International Ring under the lights with the charities cheerleading from the sidelines. (inset photo) The FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge has already donated close to $3 million to charities in the past three years. This is an event worth flying to Florida for! ▲

Aside from these two special events, there is the most exciting class of them all, the FEI Nations Cup presented by G&C Farm. This class takes national pride to a whole new level! On March 1, each team will execute the technical Grand Prix course in order to represent their country. This year there will also be a FEI Nations Cup for Young Riders, Junior, and Children’s riders, sponsored by Hollow Creek Farm. “This exciting development will give top level experience to our youngest riders,” said Michael Stone, President of Equestrian Sport Productions. The day after the FEI Nations Cup, horses will take their chances at the $35,000 G&C Farm Puissance, a class where the horse that jumps the highest fence wins the title. This will also be the first year that the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival holds two CSI 5* rated Grand Prix classes. The first will be the $300,000 FEI World Cup Qualifier Grand Prix presented by The Bainbridge Companies, which will be held during “Saturday Night Lights” on March 9, and the second, the $500,000 FTI Consulting Finale Grand Prix, is on March 30. This year the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival plans to give out almost $7 million in prize money, and with the array of divisions offered, the opportunities for riders are endless. This year the horse show has reduced the cost for horses showing in the Young Jumper Divisions. Stone commented, “By doing this, we hope to increase the opportunities for breeders to show their young jumpers and create a pipeline of great horses for the United States Team.” 18

Hunters Compete in Style Over $1 million in prize money will be awarded to the hunter divisions. The WCHR Hunter Spectacular will be held on February 23 and is a favorite in the “Saturday Night Lights” line-up. Horses that are champion in their respective divisions the week of the USHJA/ WCHR Hunter Spectacular will get the chance to show off their style and grace under the lights. There will also be a $50,000 USHJA International Derby during the last week of FTI WEF. This class is the ultimate test for hunters as they try to keep their poise jumping natural obstacles out at the grass Stadium. There are also very competitive equitation classes offered, all leading up to the George Morris Excellence in Equitation class sponsored by Alessandro Albanese on March 22. The best-of-the-best in equitation compete in this class because in order to qualify, a rider must win one equitation class during FTI WEF, which is quite difficult to do.

The FTI WEF – More Than Just Competition

Dressage Returns in the Adequan Global Dressage Festival Aside from jumpers, hunters, and equitation disciplines, there is the elegance of dressage. The Adequan Global Dressage Festival is held at the PBIEC venue at South Shore Boulevard and Pierson Road, and is home to five Olympic-quality riding arenas. There will be $275,000 in prize money awarded, which makes the Adequan Global Dressage Festival one of the most prestigious and richest dressage competitions in the world. This year there will be five CDI competitions, where both horse and rider have the chance to prove their abilities in front of international judges. The two most prestigious events are the Wellington CDI-5* presented by Diamante Farms held March 14-17, and the Wellington Nations Cup CDIO-3* presented by Stillpoint Farm which will run April 11-14. The new GDF show grounds will definitely have an exciting season in 2013 as the dressage community continues to expand in Wellington.

For those who wish to pay a quick visit to the PBIEC, there are a few weekly educational activities to participate in. Every Thursday starting January 17, there are Lunch & Learns that feature both intriguing topics as well as delicious lunches. The FTI WEF’s generous sponsors will host the Lunch & Learns. The FTI WEF will also have a Ride & Learn series, which is a clinic for riders every Tuesday starting January 15. A well-respected hunter, jumper, or equitation trainer will instruct each session. Various equestrian-related companies will sponsor the Ride & Learn series, which will provide an opportunity for brand/product recognition. People are also encouraged to schedule a private Equestrian Lunch & Tour. Hospitality functions can also be scheduled at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. White Horse Catering can offer up-scale or casual dining options for any type of event. Whether you are looking to build a custom buffet or simply have hors d’oeuvres, you will be taken care of. The hospitality venues at the PBIEC include The Wellington Club, known for its elegance, the Special Events Pavilion, the largest venue space, The Tiki Hut, which is both casual and comfortable, as well as The Gallery, a modern on-site nightclub. You can often find people hanging around the bar at The Tiki Hut or hitting the dance floors at The Gallery after a “Saturday Night Lights” event. The fun never stops at PBIEC!

An interesting event to take note of is the VDL Auction, which will take place at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival venue February 26-28. This is a unique opportunity for riders, buyers, and sponsors to get involved and bid on promising young horses from quality Dutch bloodlines. www.EliteEquestrian.us

A great part of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center is the “Vendor Village” boutiques. Who needs the mall when everything you could want is right at the horse show? Aside from horse-related products, one can find leather goods, designer brands, trendy fashion accessories, as well as jewelry, home goods, and art. The boutiques are located in an outdoor courtyard perfect for the warm Florida days. However, let’s not forget the various food vendors located around the grounds. There is something to please everyone’s palate. If you are an equestrian you have not lived until you have seen the barns in Wellington, Florida. Over 2,000 horses are stabled within 8,000 acres of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in the most unique and luxurious barns. These are not your average horse barns! Next to the horse show is the prestigious Grand Prix Village containing some of the most exquisite and expensive barns in the world. The FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival is designed to be a destination everyone can enjoy. Surrounding the horse show are exceptional hotels, spas, shopping, fishing, as well as golf. The Palm Beach International Center is located near Palm Beach, where one can enjoy a relaxing day on the beach.

Destination Lusitano Trip of a Lifetime Immerses Travelers in the World of the Lusitano Horse in Brazil

A

re you ready to embark on the trip of your lifetime?

Imagine entering a world of Lusitanos where you will be surrounded by beautiful horses, spectacular countryside and charming Brazilian accommodations. It may sound like a dream, but “Destination Lusitano” is a reality at Interagro Farm. Interagro Lusitanos of Brazil, the largest breeder and exporter of Lusitano horses in the world, open their doors and invite guests to enjoy the farm’s horses, history, and unique equestrian culture. Dubbed Destination Lusitano, Interagro is proud to offer this incredible opportunity to experience the Lusitano breed and the daily routine of the Brazilian stud farm and training center. “Interagro was amazing. I took dressage lessons on schoolmasters, tried my hand at Working Equitation, went on several trail rides and drove in carriages pulled by a team of Lusitanos,” said Katie Hoog, an American dressage rider who recently embarked on a Destination Lusitano trip to Interagro Farm, “My mom even took a lesson on a Lusitano stallion. I have experienced horse vacations and clinics in several European countries, but nothing comes close to my trip to Interagro Farm.”

Hidden in the tropical landscape of southern Brazil, Interagro Farm is a secluded equestrian sanctuary and home to over 600 Lusitanos. Walled in by lush foliage and rolling hills, Interagro Lusitanos is unmatched in every way: from its horses and staff to its natural beauty, wildlife and accommodations. “Everyone can find something they enjoy at our farm,” said Cecilia Gonzaga, Managing Director of Interagro Lusitanos. “Guests can take a dressage lesson in the picadeiro or ride working equitation, an exciting and growing discipline that combines dressage-like maneuvers with obstacles that must be negotiated quickly and efficiently.” Each Destination Lusitano experience can be customized to meet guests’ needs or desires, allowing them to schedule their stay and pick and choose which activities they prefer. Interagro offers a private villa on the farm where guests can lounge by their private pool, soaking in the Brazilian sunshine and enjoying incredible cuisine and scenery. Trail ride through Interagro’s 1200 tropical acres of rolling hills, fields of coffee beans, and exotic animals and plants. Visit the herds of young horses in the pastures, take a lesson in the picadeiro, Interagro’s indoor arena, on a Lusitano schoolmaster, or ride the exciting working equitation course. Interagro’s horses suit every level of rider, from the experienced professional to beginner. For those who prefer not to ride but still wish to enjoy the Brazilian countryside, Interagro’s teams of driving horses provide a comfortable alternative to horseback. Interagro also features a stunning array of wild flora and fauna, all accessible through walking or riding trails that meaner through forests filled with exotic wildlife and endangered species of trees. While the allure of traveling to Brazil is exciting, the real prize is the Lusitano horse. The breed has captivated riders around 24

the world thanks to their athletic abilities, tremendous work ethic and generous temperament that makes them suitable for professionals and amateurs alike. Interagro is also unique in that visitors can see the ‘living pedigree’ of their Lusitanos; from sires, dams, relatives, and offspring, Interagro offers an unparalleled look at Lusitano breeding and lineages. “When people become fans of the Lusitano breed, it becomes a passion that lasts their entire life,” Gonzaga said. “We keep in touch with all of the people who buy our horses and they develop an amazing bond with their horses, because each Lusitano really is amazing.

We have seen over the years that if someone buys a Lusitano, they often love the breed so much that they buy a second and a third. I will warn you that the Lusitano is addictive!” The Interagro horse is a modern Lusitano, a horse that excels in the traditional equestrian disciplines, from dressage and driving to jumping and working equitation. Interagro is committed to preserving the pure bloodlines of the Lusitano breed, and Interagro bloodlines include some of the most respected bloodlines in the breed such as Farao (JHC), Nirvana Interagro, Ofensor (MV), Xique-Xique (CI) and Yacht (SA).

Wellington Barn Tour

Behind The Stable Doors

With immaculate and breathtaking farms, prestigious show grounds and acclaimed weather, Wellington, Florida is the “horse” place to be, especially in the winter months when hunter, jumper, and dressage riders from around the world congregate for the winter show circuit. Home to many world-class and Olympic show jumpers and dressage horses and riders, Wellington has long been considered the horse mecca of the United States. A behind-the-scenes tour of five magnificent farms is the perfect way to take a sneak peek at life in Wellington. These prestigious stables opened their doors to give our readers a peak inside the “hallowed stalls”. From sleek and modern to an old world European feel, we invite you to enjoy this insider’s look at five of Wellington’s barns. 26

Lionshare Dressage Our first stop is Lionshare Dressage, located in prestigious Palm Beach Point. Lionshare Dressage is the home base to two talented and successful young dressage stars – Caroline Roffman and Endel Ots. Both excelled as young riders and have gone on to win some of the nations most prestigious championships in their budding professional careers. Roffman and Ots have both worked with some of the world’s top trainers and have come into their own in a big way. Lionshare Dressage features a beautiful, newly constructed 26-stall barn with state-of-the-art amenities including a full size, mirrored dressage arena with rubber footing by Premier Equestrian, a round pen with felt fiber footing, and lush turnouts. Palm Beach Point offers miles of trails and Lionshare’s riders often head out the driveway for an enjoyable and peaceful hack. The barn also features a video system for round-the-clock surveillance and care of the horses.

Lionshare maintains a knowledgeable, caring staff to attend to the horses’ every need and the barn also has an on-site treadmill, laser therapy, ultrasound and ice machines to ensure that all equine athletes are conditioned and able to perform at their peak. In addition, the gorgeous foliage, decorative stonework and attractive touches such as iron lanterns and arched windows in each stall add to the charm of Lionshare. The barn is stately and elegant but designed to be functional. Our next stop on the tour is Two Swans Farm, owned by Carol and Rebecca Cohen. We also learned that this amazing 10-acre custom equestrian estate is for sale. When you enter the 22-foot gates into the cobblestone courtyard you will think you have left Wellington and landed in Europe. Two Swans Farm is a fully modern facility with an unmatched old-world charm and houses a12-stall European style courtyard stable with Argentine granite cobblestone, a glamorous 80’ x 220’ covered arena, computerized

European horse walker, a chic owners apartment and two grooms apartments. Two Swans Farm is truly a tropical equestrian paradise and consistently hosts clinics with Olympic dressage rider Steffen Peters. The old world European feel of Two Swans takes both horse and rider back to a time when life centered around horses – and at Two Swans Farm it still does. While the horses enjoy the best in comfort and tranquility, the owner’s apartment offers just as much pampering for the riders. The uptown apartment is a 2 bedroom 2.5 bath owners’ oasis with Brazilian cherry wood floors and a top of the line kitchen featuring granite and subzero, wall ovens, cook top and ice-maker. A huge master bedroom suite has a private patio and terrace offering stunning views.

Two Swans Farm The stable, which has the air of a European village, has three grooming stalls, including one with exterior access for the farrier and vet. The stable has tiled and air-conditioned feed room and a lounge room with custom-built bins for storage of horse blankets, saddle pads and more. The lounge is also great for casual entertaining and conversation. An additional storage room is perfect for medical and grooming supplies with built in storage cabinets, sink, and rubber-matted floor. A laundry room with washer, dryer, refrigerator has a sink and separate half bath. The professionally decorated and furnished tack room has a walkin storage closet and full bath. The picturesque covered arena features custom built trusses, finished tongue and groove ceiling, sand rubber footing and is fully irrigated with halogen lighting. The Cohens are currently splitting their time between Florida, the Northeast and Europe, where Carol Cohen is the co-owner of the famous Danish stallion, Comeback II, so they have decided to offer Two Swans Farm for sale. This is the second farm that Carol Cohen designed. The first Two Swans Farm is now Diamante Farm and home base for rider/owner, Devon Kane and Olympian Michelle Gibson. No doubt the current Two Swans Farm will be home to another champion with discriminating taste and the highest standards for horse care and comfort.

Palms Stables (shown on page 30 ) is the next stop on our tour. Appropriately named, this beautiful farm provides a warm welcome where gorgeous Florida palm trees are found throughout the property. The first order of business at this barn is always personal introductions to each beloved horse. Owners Kelly and Mike Wiener have created a unique, family-oriented environment that truly sets Palms Stables apart from other equestrian facilities in the Wellington area. In fact, Palms Stables’ unique atmosphere has attracted a famous client: Roxanne Stein, local celebrity and WPTV Channel 5 newscaster, is an avid horsewoman, and chooses to board, ride and train at Palms Stables. The state of the art training amenities at Starwyn provide all the requirements for a show jumping training facility and more. Outside is a sand ring, a grass ring, and a oval track that encircles the both of them. The farm also features a covered hot-walker with a lungeing ring, as well as a equine treadmill conditioning. Starwyn has 10 paddocks and 6 washracks for the horses, and is designed to be one of the most workable equestrian facilities in the area.

Stillpoint Farm

ne of the main highlights on our tour is a visit to Wellington’s home of world-class dressage, Stillpoint Farm. This prestigious, highperformance farm is owned by international dressage rider, Arlene “Tuny” Page, and is home to a number of internationally recognized riders and trainers who thrive in an atmosphere of professionalism and cooperative team spirit. Stillpoint Farm is situated on 10 acres and features a 34-stall main stable divided into four private wings. The north and south wings contain their own wash racks, tack rooms, laundry rooms, offices, kitchens and full bathrooms. The covered arena is oversized with full kick boards and features Martin Collins Equestrian Surface’s Ecotrack footing, a dust free surface that offers remarkable cushion and traction and is the footing of choice for many international venues. This gorgeous facility is located very close to the new Global Dressage Festival show grounds in Wellington. Tuny Page explains that the goal for Stillpoint Farm is to provide dedicated riders a venue that inspires excellence. Therefore, she has focused on three main points: the comfort of the horses in their stables, comfort for the horses on the riding surfaces, and comfort for the riders and trainers. She states that her dream was always to create a facility that would attract like-minded colleagues to complete the vision. Tuny has always viewed riding as a team sport where riders and trainers alike encourage each other and share experience and insights. For her, this is the optimal way to develop every level of rider and horse, and it is the philosophy that is embraced by everyone at Stillpoint Farm. Tuny Page is one of the United States’ top Dressage riders, competing at the international level. She has had numerous wins in the FEI Grand Prix arena, which has earned her a ranking among the world’s best. Tuny thrives in the training atmosphere of Stillpoint. She has enjoyed a consistent connection with both Robert Dover and Oded Shimoni throughout her dressage career. Tuny has also capitalized on training opportunities with Klaus Balkenhol, Kyra Kyrkland, and Hubertus Schmidt.

Dani Goldstein is dedicated to giving back to the equestrian community through an equestrian educational series that she developed. This comprehensive program will be offered at the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival during weeks 1-5, and again during weeks 7-12. The series will provide valuable knowledge, understanding and insight for young riders and adult amateur equestrians. All the basics of horsemanship will be covered including topics such as stable management, grooming, tacking, and schooling area safety. Also, general topics such as FEI standards, jumper course design, legal contracts and business essentials will be addressed. In addition to all of this, Dani has been training hard herself, and is currently riding for Israel. She is aspiring to become the first female show jumper on the Israeli Olympic Team in 2016. After touring some of the best equestrian facilities the world has to offer, it’s hard to imagine wanting to be any other place on earth. The state of the art amenities, luxury, and exhilarating atmosphere of the south Florida equestrian community leaves nothing to be desired by any horse enthusiast. The talent of world-class, top performance athletes, both horse and human, is unmatched anywhere else in the world. Certainly Wellington, home to so many prestigious farms, is heaven on earth for horses and riders.

Starwyn Farms

Even in light of the high profile names and performance-focused intensity, Stillpoint Farms welcomes visitors and encourages the public to attend clinics or simply observe the top names in world class dressage. The final stop on the tour is Starwyn Farms, an amazing, year-round hunter/jumper barn. With a focus on show jumping, Starwyn provides a place where clients can work toward creating conditioned athletes out of their horses. Owner Danielle Goldstein designed this dream-come-true equestrian center when she was only 15 years old. A few years, and hundreds of drawings later, Starwyn is now that showcase facility. The barn is set up in quadrants with 8 stalls in each for a total of 32 stalls. Each quadrant has its own tack room and feed room. The facility also has two laundry rooms and two bathrooms. The living quarters on the property consists of two apartments as well as a small cottage. In addition, another 2-bedroom apartment was recently added providing ample room for extended stay clients and guests. 32

His & Hers: Good Grooming With Charles Joseph Berry and L.A. Pomeroy

What do better looking awards photos, BB cream, and skin cancer share in common? For riders, more than you think: the balance between looking good and staying healthy is as important as a two-point seat. The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention calls skin cancer not only the most common cancer in America, but one of epidemic proportion, with more than 3.5 million new cases and 2.2 million people treated annually. Those living with year-round, bright sunlight face the highest risk, as do those (like riders) who spend a lot of time outdoors without covering their skin and using sunscreen; men are twice as likely to have basal cell and three times as likely to have squamous cell skin cancers. While most are successfully treated if found early, the growing number of cases makes skin cancer a serious and expensive issue with medical costs alone topping nearly $2 billion annually. BB cream -- that haute-to-trot skin care trend for men and women -- promises to offer everything from UV protection to a moisturizing matte finish that will even skin tone and minimize blemishes. In the pursuit of good grooming, it caught His and Her attention:

I

have always loved horses and my experiences with them continue to inspire me in my artistic endeavors.

I strive to capture all of the various aspects of different equine personalities along with their intrinsic beauty in my jewelry designs.

My filigree horse jewelry is some of my most innovative work. My first filigree design was Guinevere, an award winning piece that features a delicately carved horse who’s mane and tail become floral vines that swirl around the entire bead. Guinevere was voted to be the most innovated design in the AETA Innovation Awards in 2007, where it was judged against many other entries, which included horse jewelry, accessories, home décor items, and artwork from many major companies in the equestrian industry. I created the Guinevere bead through a very complex and unusual carving process. Guinevere was made through the lost wax casting process. In order to create a hollow piece using this process, it is quite a complicated feat. In fact, some of the aspects of this method are a closely guarded secret within the trade. \

The fist step in creating a cast design is to hand carve the design in wax. Filigree designs, like Guinevere, will take one hundred hours or more of meticulous hand carving in wax and take days to accomplish. It is often necessary for me to make many of the wax carving tools that I use in order to create these pieces. Details must be carved, and wax must be welded over any mistakes or file marks and then reshaped. Once the long, tedious process of wax carving is finished a rubber mold can be made. This mold will be injected with another type of wax which allows multiple pieces to be made. Due to the fact that there is a large open space in the center of the piece and, also, a continuous pattern extending around the design, the complexity of making the design into a viable mold is obviously a difficult design challenge from start to finish.

38

Guinevere’s continuous pattern allows the wearer two options or “sides” to choose from when wearing this piece. She can be worn from the front to show the delicately carved horse standing with her neck rounded and her feet together. Worn with the “backside” showing, Guinevere is a lovely filigree floral “bead” featuring delicately carved scrolling floral vines. These options make this design, as well as all of my filigree horses, extremely versatile, as well as striking pieces of jewelry.

Ivy is one of the three most complex designs in my line of filigree work. Ivy is a hollow filigree horse head with a very majestic sophisticated style. Ivy was particularly complicated due to the many undercuts involved. When I was carving her I saved the space under her chin for the last step since it would definitely be a challenge to achieve. It required me to make a tool that would allow me to continue the filigree design in an extremely hard spot to reach. After some trial and error, I was able to make some special tools. After some very careful carving, I was thrilled with the results. Complex filigree designs always present a variety of challenges, and countless hours, but the results can be quite rewarding. I make sure that each of my designs is cast in high quality sterling silver and hand polished for a flawless finish and long lasting enjoyment for my customers.

The

NEW GHG Unique Gift Idea #19: A pencil Portrait by Jozef

After creating Guinevere, I was inspired to create more filigree designs and challenge myself with this format of metal art. A few more of my favorites followed as I created Entwined and, finally, Ivy. Entwined is a hollow filigree heart shaped design. On the front of this bead I carved a little mare and stallion, nose to nose, in a delightful warm pose. The stallion has a wild curly mane that wraps around the bead, while the mare’s mane runs down around the bottom of the bead. Both of the horses manes loop together on the back of the piece where I placed small flowers as a finishing touch. This piece is exquisite on both the front and the back and there is a real emotional aspect of warmth in this design, which has made it one of my most popular pieces. I will, occasionally, set 1mm diamond eyes in both horses on the Entwined bead.

Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori

Deborah Butterfield’s love of horses and life making horse sculptures Deborah Butterfield was born on May 7, 1949 which happens to be the same day as the 75th running of the famed Kentucky Derby. This particular statistic may have something very important to do with her career path and her widespread success. The American artist, best known for her large scale and attractive portraits of horses, dominated the art world in the 1980s and 1990s. Butterfield has a ranch in Bozeman, Montana and studio space in Hawaii. While she only constructs her sculptures in the wintertime, her work may be viewed—year round—in major museums and galleries the world over. Deborah Butterfield’s adoration for horses is well known and she views her sculptures are personifications of herself. She sees the horses as individuals, contructing portraits of horses and herself, simultaneously.

The American artist, Deborah Butterfield (born 1949) has secured a place in the history of art through her heroic, large scale sculptures of horses.

40

Butterfield, like many equestrians, finds that riding and bonding with her horses informs her world and her work, that is her sculpture. She works, only in winter, on the sculptures and tries to capture the likeness of the figure. Her horses are intimate and influential.

www.EliteEquestrian.us

Butterfield had stated that she was interested in making self-portraits but she was not interested in using her own body as a starting point. She selected horses to convey personal aspects of her art. The horse was power symbol and precious creature for Butterfield. She has stated, as quoted in museum exhibition catalogues and gallery talks, that horses are dramatic, fascinating animals and now, are closely related to her. She confesses that the use of found objects—wood, steel, debris—helps her to visualize the form as she does not draw the horse’s form first but rather sculpts using objects. Orion, from the collection of the Denver Art Museum, is a constructed metal sculpture of an individual horse using materials that she finds while surveying junk yards. Parts of the head of this sculpture were produced from a car fender that Butterworth scavenged and reused.

Rx: LAY-UP/REHABILITION

Your fragile teammate has developed a condition that inhibits top performance and your veterinarian had prescribed lay-up and/or rehabilitation. Repairs to ligaments, tendons, muscles, bones, organs, and skin need time to mend. Proper nursing care, appropriate confinement, physical therapy and gradual introduction to normal activities are needed in order to make the difference between a limited recovery and a complete recovery. The choice of how you want this achieved becomes yours to make. HUMAN CONSIDERATIONS The veterinarian will design a definitive plan of action that will be required. This plan must be taken very seriously. One aspect of the plan is medication. Medication must be given on time, the correct route, and in the exact amounts. For example, three times daily means every 8 hours…. not 6 hours one time followed by 7 hours and concluded with an overnight time of 11 hours because it fits into your schedule. Drug levels must remain constant in the system in order to maximize their effectiveness. There is no such thing as flextime when it comes to medication administration.

Bad weather, your job or social calendars may not allow for the consistency your horse will need to recover. A hit or miss attitude will yield to a hit or miss outcome.

Another aspect of the plan may include bandaging, confinement and/or potential exercise programs. Do you know how to bandage a wound correctly? (Figure 1) Once again, if the horse is to be confined and then walked 5 minutes twice daily for a week then expanded to 10 minutes twice daily, that’s what is to be done precisely.

The rigors of doing the rehab plan can also take a toll on the owner physically. Waking up early to give meds and/or hand walking late at night or before sunrise every day in addition to your normal daily tasks of work and family can be done for the short term, but many of the rehab plans are long term. This can take a toll on both your mental and physical health.

There is also the psychological aspect for both you and your horse. Emotionally, it can be draining to you to see your companion in a compromised situation day after day. Your horse doesn’t want to be confined and forced into taking the medications and you don’t want to be perceived as the “bad guy” by making sure it happens. It’s hard to detach your emotions but successful programs require it.

Figure 2 FACILITY CONSIDERATIONS Do you have the facilities to do the prescribed plan? Some plans require a treadmill, pool, or other mechanically assisted type physical therapy. These plans leave little option but to go to a professional rehabilitation facility. However, many plans can be done with a little ingenuity at your own facility. Can a small flat pen be assembled (Figure 2)? Are there safe walking pathways, inclined pathways (Figure 3), indoor arenas, and a few brave souls to help you? Is there access to these types of pens and walkways in inclement weather? Can you be uninterrupted while exercising your horse and not be mixing with lesson horses or training time for others. Physical therapy must be done quietly and succinctly so that as few as possible mishaps can occur.

Figure 3

Additionally, do you have the appropriate ice packs, leg wraps, heat wraps, liniments, bandages, OTC medications or whatever will be required to complete the plan? These should be assembled prior to starting the plan (Figure 4). YOUR HORSE’S CONSIDERATIONS An active horse that needs confinement and/or rest should not be placed into a stall and the routine abruptly changed from speeds of 100 to zero in a day. The neurochemistry of the horse is based on a certain level of exercise output and a sudden imposed period of inactivity can cause both physiological and psychological problems. Even when professionals do the immediate downward adjustment, in many cases, it will not prevent angst, nervousness, eating and sleeping disturbances. In fact, periods of hallucinations, aggressions and extreme

emotional changes have been documented in confined horses. It has been reported that the horse can become very angry, hostile, demanding and even psycho. Even a sweet, loving horse can readily adapt unhealthy stall and behavioral conduct that can be hard to deal with. To assist in the transition, all day long activity schedules are needed to divert the horse’s attention outward. This can be accomplished by talking to the horse every couple of hours along with a handful of hay and even a loving pet or body scratch in the “tickle” areas. Routine brushing and basic attention and even vocal exchanges with the horse should be included in the plan. Sometimes a stable mate or “babysitter” in the stall next door can give the patient companionship and confidence when you are not around. In professional rehabilita-

Shaping Equine Behavior A modern training paradigm

Shaping Behaviors is the art of soliciting and then rewarding the incremental steps of a behavior that we desire to teach a horse. Effective Shaping techniques utilize positive reinforcement to motivate a horse and then confirm the desired results. Motivating a horse is not the same as asking for a behavior and then releasing the pressure on a horse when he discovers the desired response. Positive reinforcement builds trust and a mutually beneficial and rewarding relationship. Popular release of pressure and startle methods solicit an instinctual and reactionary response from a horse which is not exactly positive reinforcement. An example of this would be shaking the lead rope to get him to step back or startling him with a plastic bag until he moves or even no longer reacts. Shaping Behaviors requires equestrian tact, timing and thought and is an opportunity to explore our horses’ interesting and sometimes perplexing individuality. The art of training is to find a way to inspire each horse and develop trust; Shaping Behaviors is the new paradigm of horse training. We like to create situational awareness in the horse that helps him to respond to, or change his response to a specific request. In other words, HE decides how to respond and it is our job to make him believe that our request is HIS idea which makes for a happy horse. There are lots of simple exercises and tricks that are fun, beneficial both mentally and physically to the horse, and will not in any way interfere with saddle training and trail skills. A good example is teaching a horse to smile or to retrieve an object. Sound silly? Both of these moves are in the category of Tricks of Engagement because the horse must want to engage. No amount of pressure and release, advance and retreat or manipulation will result in a horse that will retrieve an object on request.

Setting the Record Straight We are not suggesting that release of pressure is ineffective or wrong or should not be used. Systems that utilize startle and desensitization responses certainly have their place, especially in starting unhandled colts. We are assuming that most horsemen and women that learn Shaping Behaviors have companion horses that are already well behaved and educated. Positive and negative reinforcement are but two single elements in the entire spectrum of behavior modification. Negative reinforcement is perhaps an unfortunate choice of scientific terminology as many facets of it are not really negative, but more like the absence of positive. Shaping Human Behavior We use trick training and Equine Agility to teach a horse how to learn and a human how to teach. Study a successful system(s) then develop a style that works for you and your horse and stick to it. Cues to the horse should be clear and demonstrative and unique to the desired behavior. Timing is of the essence because the horse must instantaneously understand the status (with you) of his response, even a small approximation. (clicker trainers already know this). If a human has poor timing or does not notice and reward a horse’s response, some horses may just stop trying and shut down. A reward system should be taught to a horse. This can include physical, verbal or food rewards. Do not expect a horse to automatically know what words mean unless you teach him the meaning. Corrections can be used to signal him to halt undesired or unsolicited behaviors. Correction is NOT punishment and can be as simple as turning your back to the horse and saying “No” while ignoring his behavior for a moment or two or placing him in a position that he has moved from.Taking the time to teach your horse the basic concepts of learning will carry over in benefits to every other aspect of his ground training, saddle and trail training. How does it apply? The ten commandments of Shaping Behaviors 1. Train with a plan. 2. Have the horse’s attention. 3. Minimize distractions. 4. Never assume the horse knows a lesson that you have not taught him. 5. Set the horse up for success. 6. Explain requests in a way that he can understand and in incremental steps. 7. Recognize even the smallest try. 8. Avoid confrontation. 9. Don’t over train, a few repetitions are all that most horses need or can understand. 10. End each session on a successful note! 54

Equine Learning Indicators Recognizing the many signs and indications of learning and also calming signals that an animal displays during training is necessary for efficient, effective results. Calming signals are commonly known and taught in canine training, but most equine teachers and clinicians don’t go beyond the usual laundry list of head dropping, licking and chewing, facing the handler etc. There are many more and they almost exactly mirror those displayed by dogs in agility training. Recognizing these signs will tell the handler where the animal is in the learning cycle.

Learning Signs Learning Signs can include looking away for a second or two, sniffing at the ground as though searching for food, yawning, swinging or nodding the head, pawing and blowing through the nostrils or trying to take a step away from the handler. When a horse calmly displays these signs, we allow him a brief mental break (approximately 5 to 30 seconds) after which he will usually offer willingness to reengage.Practice doesn’t necessarily make perfect and it is the dwell time between repetitions where the lessons are solidified in the horse’s mind. While some moves require more practice than others because of the level of physical difficulty required, many horses can conceptually understand moves that require very few repetitions to demonstrate improvement. Too many repetitions can mentally numb a horse and slow or even

reverse earlier success. Shape the Smile A smiling horse almost always puts a Smile on human faces. Teaching the Smile does much to increase the trainer’s skill at gradually shaping approximations into a desired behavior. This is a great trick for your horse to train you! Cues Vocal cue is “Smile” Proximity cue can be very close or as far away as your horse will respond. Physical cue can be to hold up your index finger or lightly scratch the underside of his lip. Bridge signal is “Good”. A bridge signal lets the horse know that the treat is forthcoming. Each horse will have his own style of smile. Some horses hold the top lip up very high and others will have a big loose lipped smile. Shaping a nice smile is not to be confused with methods that use smelly substances to cause a reactionary response of lifting the lip. Remember this is “Shaping Behaviors”. Steps Stand in front of your horse and have a food treat in the palm of your hand with your fingers closed loosely around it so it that it is easy for the horse to smell. Urge the horse to explore and nuzzle for the treat. In order to get the treat, the horse has to use the lip in a prehensile way. Horses do this naturally when picking through forage. When he reaches for the treat, tell him “Good” and let him take the treat from the palm of your hand. Initially, use the word “Good” instantly when you see any movement of the upper lip extending to reach the treat. Offer a treat-as quickly as possible in conjunction with the bridge (word) signal.

Soon he will understand that there is a reward waiting for him, and when he nuzzles for the treat, ask him to reach for it with his lip. In the beginning, each slight lifting of the upper lip should be rewarded. Horses will usually “reach” for the treat with the upper lip if it is held just a little outside of their reach. Be very quick to give the bridge or marking signal of “Good” followed immediately with the treat. At this point, change the position of your hand so that it is in an upright position as if making a pledge. We usually hold up the index finger and hold the treat in the palm of the hand. This change of position is part of transferring the cue and most horses take a simple change like this very easily. Often we will take our index finger and lightly rub the underside of the horse’s raised lip and urge him to lift it more at the same time. The goal (over time) will be to be able to stand back a few feet from the horse and have him Smile with the cue of a raised hand and index finger. Eight to ten feet is probably the maximum distance for this as the horse really acts from our cues and our enthusiasm. When the horse understands the basic move, reward only for improvement in the form of an upward move of the lip in a smile-like expression. This may come with a higher lift of the lip and/or holding the lip up each time for just a second or so longer. Do this by withholding the bridge signal momentarily. Most horses try very hard to get it right as soon as they understand that they can earn a reward. Shaping the Future Learning to shape behaviors makes better trainers of all of us and imparts concepts of learning to our equine friends that can be utilized to enhance their development for the rest of their lives. We believe that as our understanding of equine learning abilities increases, and our horses have more comprehensive education in line with the science of animal behavior, the number rescue horses will decrease. We are in the 21st century, a time of enlightenment and the horse is our companion, our trail mate and soul mate and ready and willing to learn anything imaginable including the concept of “how to learn”. We dare you to just imagine!

Only To Discover They Both Have Just One Kidney! When young James Holmes visited Blackpool Rescue and Rehoming Centre in the U.K., and fell in love with a horse, he was amazed to discover that they’d both had surgery to remove a kidney when they were just a few months old. “James underwent surgery to remove a kidney when he was nine months old. He was born with both kidneys, but when he was a week old, we were told that James’ right ureter and kidney had not formed properly. He was put on medication to control his blood pressure until he was strong enough to have the kidney removed at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital,” Angela Holmes, James’ mum said. It was a very difficult time for the family and they very nearly lost James. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery and years later, when James was nine, he met Frankie, a one year-old 15hh skewbald Thoroughbred cross. She was born at World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in May 2011 after her mother was rescued as part of a large welfare case. Although Frankie was a content foal, her early life was also to suffer a setback when it was discovered that she was unable to pass water efficiently. “I discovered that Frankie was not urinating properly and suspected a malformation, so I sent her to Liverpool Veterinary Hospital

for further investigation,” said David Catlow BVSc MRCVS who is the main vet who looks after horses at the centre. “There they discovered that Frankie’s kidney and bladder were not properly connected so there were two choices - either to reconstruct the urethra (the tube connecting the kidney and the bladder) or to remove the kidney completely. The latter decision was made as it is entirely possible for a horse to live a normal and healthy life with one kidney and there was less risk of complication. It is an extremely rare condition in horses but with the skill and expertise of the vets at Leahurst, Frankie can now look forward to a long and happy future”. After her operation, Frankie returned to the farm to spend time recovering from the surgery. Penny Farm is a thriving visitor centre and many visitors were keen to meet Frankie and hear her story: visitors including James, who came to the farm with his family from Preston earlier this year. “Our first visit to Penny Farm was Easter this year. We went for the Easter Egg hunt and found Frankie too!”, said Mrs Holmes. “On James’ first visit he was naturally drawn to Frankie and spent lots of time making friends with her over the stable door. Then we walked over to the visitor centre, chatted to staff and found out about Frankie’s recent operation. I was really shocked by the

“Of the 60 plus horses being looked after at the centre at the time, we thought it was an amazing coincidence that these two had formed a bond. Since then we have been back to visit many times and James is very fond of Frankie. He is also delighted and intrigued by other coincidences that have since emerged, such as the fact that both Frankie and James’ Nan, Patricia Poulton share the same birthday and that Penny Farm opened on 15th June 2001 - the same day James’ parents got married!” Mr Catlow BVSc MRCVS added: “For James to have singled out Frankie as his favourite horse at Penny Farm is a remarkable story: one can’t help but feel that their similar experiences and special bond is something more than coincidence.” Frankie is now fully rehabilitated and available for rehoming through World Horse Welfare where she will go to a good and loving home. “James is both happy and sad that Frankie is now ready to be rehomed,” James’ mum continued. “He is happy because it means she’s settled and well enough to leave Penny Farm. She’s such a lovely friendly horse she deserves a very good, kind and loving home. He wishes we could have her but I’ve said I’ve got enough to look after!” Find out more about rehoming a horse from World Horse Welfare at http://www.worldhorsewelfare.org/rehoming/index.asp. You can also donate to the charity at https://www.worldhorsewelfare.org/donate/ Frankie is a very special horse and will be very much missed by staff and visitors - especially James - but they all know that she will go on to thrive. 60

QUESTIONS

Rider Profile: Tami Hoagg

Tami Hoag, 16-time New York Times bestseller and Grand Prix dressage rider, is well-known for her spine tingling novels and accomplishments in the dressage arena, but who is the real Tami Hoag? Just as the characters in her novels profile suspects, we’ve done a bit of detective work and come up with this Q&A session detailing the more confidential aspects of the famous writer and rider.

What passions do you have besides writing and horses? I’ll sound like a total geek here, but I love learning new things. I can’t possibly live long enough to learn all the things I want to learn, from languages, to history, to shooting, to cooking, to aspects of riding. My current obsession is mixed martial arts fighting. It’s the ultimate athletic competition between two people. It requires the mastery of multiple disciplines, and not only physical but mental skill. It’s extremely tactical. And, yes, the guys are hot.

What is your favorite movie and why? The Lion In Winter. Brilliant writing. Gladiator. Russell Crowe as a gladiator. Duh.

Biggest pet peeve? People who can’t or won’t use or acknowledge logic. I could become homicidal over that. Favorite restaurant? They’re closed now, but I used to love Terra on PCH in Malibu, CA. It was very intimate, and they grew all their own organic produce. Here in Florida I like Seasons 52 in Palm Beach Gardens.

6

Favorite drink? Vodka and tonic over crushed ice with the juice of half a lemon.

7

Best advice you’ve ever been given? To realize that if someone doesn’t like me or doesn’t approve of something I do, that’s their problem, not mine.

Motto or creed you live by? Be humble, and treat people the way I want to be treated.

What or who inspires you, and why? I have the greatest admiration for firefighters and police. They rush in to situations most people would run from, and risk their lives for people they don’t know, and they get very little in return. That would be the definition of admirable.

10 11

Favorite song or band? I have very eclectic taste in music. I love Sting, Chris Botti, Maroon 5, Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, Diana Krall, Jesse Cook. The list goes on and on. Dream car? I don’t really have one.

Meet April Kae

How did you get your start in horseback riding? I got interested in horses when a childhood friend took me out to her barn to meet her new horse. I completely fell in love with her horse and dreamed of one day having a horse of my own. So my mom agreed to enroll me in a riding summer camp, and the rest is history. Tell me about your horses. I have had the pleasure of being able to ride and own many horses, but right now I only have one. He is an American Saddlebred named Silver and he is actually the first horse I ever owned- I have had him in my life for ten years now. He is truly the most amazing horse I have ever met. He has the incredible ability to adapt to any situation he finds himself in- whether it’s showing at a big national horse show or taking the barn kids on a trail ride, he excels at everything he does. Everyone at the barn loves him and he spends most of his days hanging out and overdosing on carrots.

64

www.EliteEquestrian.us

Where do you normally take your horses out to ride? Since I ride show horses we usually practice in an arena, but occasionally we will cool down by going on a trail ride. Have you ever ridden in a competition? Yes, I have been showing American Saddlebred horses for the past thirteen years. We usually make it to about six to eight shows a year. What awards and accomplishments have you achieved in riding? When I was nine years old I won the championship for the Pacific Coast show circuit (California, Nevada, Texas, Arizona, Oregon, and Washington) for having the most blue ribbons in the ten and under pleasure division. I came back to win the circuit championship a couple of years ago in the Country Pleasure division with my horse Silver.

What is your favorite thing about horseback riding? Anyone who rides knows that there is something magical about being on your horse. Somehow the stresses and worries of the day just fade away and you are able to focus exclusively on the bond you have with that animal. That is what I love most about getting to ride- it is like therapy … really, really expensive therapy. :p Have your riding and your music careers ever connected? Not exactly, but I have learned some very valuable lessons from riding that have helped me in all other aspects of my life. When I first started riding, and for many years after that, I was very nervous and timid on horses. Sometimes my trainer would spend hours with me just trying to get me to walk around the arena. Many times people asked me why I didn’t just quit, but I couldn’t. I cared so much about the horses and wanted to be a good rider so badly that I would not give up. I am so glad I stuck with it, because I was able to become a very successful rider. I learned that no matter what others say, if you believe in yourself you can do anything. I’m glad I learned this lesson before entering the crazy, cutthroat world that is the music business! Why did you choose a music career? I have always had a passion for music, but when I was young I never imagined that I would make a career out of it- it was just a

hobby for me. One year in high school I entered myself in a county-wide singing competition just for fun and ended up winning the whole thing. Something about being up on that stage just felt so right to me- like it was where I had always belonged. That was when I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in music. Who are some of your artistic influences? I have always been influenced by some of the great R&B singers like Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, and Mariah Carey. These are the people who inspired me to start singing when I was young and I believe that influence has carried through to the work I do today.

What’s next for April Kae? So much! I have a music video coming out very soon for “The Writings on the Wall” and a new single set to be released by the beginning of next year. Please visit my website www.aprilkae.com for more updates.

The Slide

All horse lovers have their favorite breed and disciplines, from miniatures to Clydesdales and all sizes in between each person is drawn to a set of unique qualities particular to a breed or activity. That said, hang around a few horse shows and certain patterns of spectator behavior begin to be obvious as well as entertaining.

Even more interesting, at least at Arabian Reining Horse shows is that some of those cheering are probably even in competition with the horse and rider in the ring. Indeed, Arabian reining has some most unusual facets as a competitive horse show discipline. Is this because there is a little cowboy hiding in everyone? Perhaps. But more importantly “the slide” is brilliant in its simplicity and utter lack of pretense. You run, you stop quick, you slide. Everyone gets it. Even though the “slide” is only a small portion of the actual riding pattern required of the exhibitor, the audience instantly and joyfully connects. Each horse and rider is individually judged on point system one at a time in the arena. Competitors are more in control of their own performances and therefore more able to appreciate a “good go” from a peer. This spirit of enthusiasm for “the slide” and the friendly camaraderie surrounding reining is infectious. Reining is currently the fastest growing discipline in the Arabian show scene. Thanks in good measure to the Arabian Reining Horse Association (ARHA) and the founding of the Arabian and Half Arabian Reining Futurity, the rewards offered in competition are on the rise as well. Arabian Reining Makes Its Mark ARHA was founded in 1998 to promote

the natural athletic abilities and versatility of the Arabians and Half Arabian horses. Through the efforts of amateur competitor Robb Walther of Sherwood, Oregon and one of the founders of the ARHA, the group became affiliated with the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) in its infancy. The NHRA’s highly acclaimed judging format for events that include technical and stylistic elements coupled with considerable difficulty elevated the standards of competition and proved a solid platform for growth. Dick Ames, of Cedar Ridge Arabians, together with Tom Redmond of Wolf Springs Ranch and Joe Batten are regarded as the organization’s three “founding fathers” of ARHA Futurity. Much of the rapid success of the ARHA can be attributed to the vision of these gentlemen and their willingness to provide the seed money to fund the Futurity. They believe hosting a show that is a lot of fun is the best way to accomplish these objectives and they continue to work on new and innovative promotional ideas. “Reining people allow other people, and not necessarily people who ride reining horses, but simply people who ride well, to get on our horses and give it a try,” comments Joe Betten. “This fact gives us opportunities to do unusual promotions and get people excited about our sport.”

One activity, however, never fails to melt any audience, regardless of demographics or show location, into a unified roar of approval and appreciation. Paying spectators, long time show exhibitors, trainers, breeders, the working staff – it matters not, everyone – unites in a collective gasp followed by a roar of approval when a good reining horse hits full gallop to produce an amazing slide. Everyone, but everyone, is paying attention and more likely than not screaming and cheering approval.

Origins of the Official Sport of Reining Arabian breeders and trainers frequently speak of giving the horse “a job” best suited to the body type and abilities of each horse. For some, a “job” that is enjoying a great deal of attention – and prize money – is the sport of reining. A long-time favorite of the Quarter Horse set, the principals behind reining trace origins as far back as the vast open ranches that once spanned the borders of the United States and Mexico. Here vaqueros lived lives akin to nomadic herdsman and developed riding skills and maneuvers to quickly control the herds in their care. In various parts of the world, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, any location where cattle grazing expanded over vast land expanses a series of unique, yet similar maneuvers on the part of horse and rider became common for herd management. The settling of western United States blended some of the earlier herding skills with frontiersman style and folklore to define a lasting image of the American West and cowboy culture. While Hollywood glorified the cowboy mystique, the sport of reining pays tribute to the real working skills of both horse and rider.

From this set of working ranch horse skills a more formal riding discipline called reining evolved into a standard of performance required to be the best. Sixty-two years ago the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) officially recognized reining as a sport, as did the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) with acceptance in its western division and certain breed divisions. Seventeen years later in 1966 the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) was founded in the United States. In 2000 the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) accepted reining a recognized discipline. International reining competitions, including the world Equestrian Games, are regulated by the FEI in concert with NRHA. Globally reining is reported to be the one of most rapidly growing of all equine sports. According to NRHA statistics, from 1997-2007, NRHA grew over 40% to over 15,000 members and from 265 NRHA approved shows to 700. “Slide In” Excitement and Outside Interests A new event launched in 2010 proves the accuracy of Joe Betten’s observation with the launch of the “Wells Fargo Advisors Celebrity Slide.” The idea is simple, find a group of a half dozen or so willing participants from other show disciplines who have good basic riding skills, assign them to a reining trainer for a few sessions of intense training and let them compete against each other. But then heat up the action with little twist by auctioning each ridertrainer team in a Calcutta with 65% of the auction total awarded to the buyer of the winning team and the balance donated to ARHA. The scoring system works from a base score of 70 points as the equivalent of an average ride with a half point to 1.5 point addition or subtraction for maneuvers performed above or below average. An average, correct performance is recognized by a zero score. The underlying principal in scoring is, to quote from NRHA Handbook, “To rein a horse is not only to guide him but also to control his every movement. The best reined horse should be willingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent resistance and dictated to completely.”

One only needs to stand back and observe the amount of laughter and good natured humor flowing around the arena to appreciate what Joe Betten said about producing a good time as the best introduction to reining. It’s easy to understand how this mix of casual western clothing, boots and hats and great love for horses brings this group of people back together again and again to enjoy each other’s company and talk horses. And the ability to reap significant cash rewards for participation doesn’t hurt either… planning to make 2013 even bigger and better is well underway. Perhaps a reining Arabian or Half-Arabian is in your future.

But some companies and brokerage firms are actually charging sales reps for the opportunity to sell cheaper electric rates. Not so at CheapElectric.biz.

In order to enable your horse to jump as effortlessly, comfortably and successfully as you would like there are many factors to be considered, with the correct saddle being a key element. The Liberty Hunter Jump Saddle has been designed with contact and freedom in mind, from the luxurious French Calf leather seat, available in semi deep or flat seat options, to the close contact English panel design which allows riders to develop a close affinity with their horse. The independent straining of the tree used in the Liberty Hunter Jump Saddle gives the ultimate ‘blissful’ balance point for maximum comfort for both horse and rider, helping to promote a harmonious feel. Elegant design touches have been added such as the Liberty signature ‘swish’ twin stitch lines and the 100% pure new wool flocking provides quality and easy adjustment whenever necessary. When choosing the Liberty Hunter Jump Saddle, or any of the Bliss of London collection, you can expect to receive exceptional customer service and support throughout the process and well beyond receipt of your saddle. Adopting a very different approach to many other manufacturers, Bliss of London do not view their saddles as ‘a simple sale’. Each and every product is custom-made to the unique specifications of horse and rider, with our experienced saddle fitters able to fit combinations of totally differing and irregular profiles, because no horse, rider or saddle is ever the same. Bliss of London Saddles are not simply delivered; they are carefully fitted and checked. Selected consultants use their knowledge and experience to assess the effects that the saddle has on the horse whilst static and in motion, as well as holding the skill to make changes through wool flocking adjustments to allow for muscle regeneration and development. The fitting process is followed up routinely throughout the lifespan of the saddle to ensure clients are totally happy with their investment. The Liberty Hunter Jump Saddle starts at $4,500. You really love your horse and don’t want your friend to be in pain! New Release DVD by Jochen Schleese! “Beyond the 9 points of Saddle Fitting” deals with the complexities of saddle fit, revealing potentially serious effects of ill-fitting saddles to horse and rider! Undiagnosed lameness, atrophy, ‘bad’ behavior, resistance, gait abnormalities, 4-beat canter, poor work attitude, sore/sensitive back, lacking engagement, stress lines and atrophy, repeated hock and stifle injections, are common equine issues Schleese witnesses every day. Jochen emotionally reveals how Saddlefit 4 Life came to be – the result of his personal experience with lameness in his competitive horse. “Riders will relate on so many levels. I hope to change your mindset. You’ll cry at what you learn about issues you may have experienced with your horse.”

Proudly Sponsors Fund Raiser For Wounded Warrior Project

Elite Equestrian magazine is proud to sponsor the NACMO Patriotic Ride which benefits the Wounded Warrior Project. The ride will be held at the Bucks County Horse Park in Revere, Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 27th, 2013. The cost of the ride is $40 for non-NACMO members, and $35 for NACMO members.

“We feel a strong obligation to support our troops for all they do” states Elite Equestrian marketing director, Bill Vander Brink, who is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “Our son is a sergeant in the Marine Corps. He has served in Afghanistan, and he and all his friends who serve are fine young men. They do appreciate the support they get from the public, whether it’s a care package, or a ‘Thanks for serving’ from someone on the street.” “We at Elite Equestrian want to do something special to give back to those who risk and give so much” explains Noelle Vander Brink, editor and former NACMO State Director. NACMO (National Association of Competitive Mounted Orienteering) is a sport that originated in the western United States in the 1980’s. Teams of riders search an area using a map to find designated sites that objectives are hidden in. The objectives are located using the azimuth from three clues in each area. Clues can be natural, like a big rock, or unnatural, like a sign or boundary marker. Placing is determined by number of clues found and time. Ribbons for first through sixth place are awarded.
