�� Day 1 As you enter Aiken you’ll notice that even the street signs are embellished with horse heads and there is a cross-walk speciﬁcally for horse-back riders. When you arrive, get a taste of it all as you head straight to the Aiken Thoroughbred Hall of Fame and Museum. Every horse on display has won an Eclipse Award and has spent time during its racing career in Aiken. You’ll be wowed by the amount of winnings each horse represents, along with real racing silks and trophies on display. The museum sits on the property of Hopelands Gardens, a 14 acre estate which opened in 1969 as a public garden, with 100-year old cedars, meandering trails and ponds.

Check out the events going on at Katydid Farm, Highﬁelds Event Center, or Bruce’s Field and you may be in for a treat to see a dressage event, hunter-jumper competition, steeplechase or even carriage races! Or head to the Hitchcock Woods to see the Aiken Hounds take part in their historic drag hunt every Tuesday and Saturday from October through March. Ride your own horse into the woods or rent one from Seahorse Stables or Rebel Ranch Tours.

To wrap it all up, you’ll need to head to the Whitney Polo Field and watch six chukkers of polo and stomp the divots during half-time to feel like you’ve gotten a true Aiken equestrian experience. Splurge and sit under the VIP pavilion with buffet style gourmet food and drinks, or pack your own tailgate and enjoy this unique experience from the comfort of your own tailgate set-up. The Aiken Polo Club hosts matches every Sunday at three during the fall and spring.

For dinner, head over to The Stables at Rose Hill, which is one of four stables in America, located on its original site, that has been re-purposed as a restaurant. Enjoy live music and quality food in one of Aiken’s oldest estates. Day 2 Wake up early and stroll through the dirt streets of the “Aiken Horse District” and watch the horses train at the famed Aiken Training Track, where 39 thoroughbred champions have trained. You just might see the next winner of the Belmont Stakes or the Kentucky Derby out for a morning gallop around the track. Afterwards, head on to The Track Kitchen where you’re likely to run into all manner of equine industry staff. Order at the counter, help yourself to coffee, read the clippings on the wall and enjoy a home cooked meal. 38

Day 3 Relish a good chai latte, fresh smoothie or and mufﬁn at Ridgecrest Coffee Bar where local art surrounds you. In this laid back atmosphere you’re welcome to bring a book and stay for a while. Another equestrian highlight you won’t want to miss is the Gaston Livery Stable. Take a tour of this historic stable, built circa 1893. The Barn is the only one remaining in South Carolina with a carriage lift. It is one of the only all brick, U-shaped barns with a carriage lift in the United States.

�� After all the action, head downtown for lunch at What’s Cookin, or The Aiken Brewing Company and then meander down Laurens Street for some equine-inspired shopping at stores like Aiken Dry Goods, Epona, and Equine Divine. The Aiken Horse Park and its Foundation are the inspiration of the late, R. Bruce Duchossois, and was brought to life by his family and friends in his memory. Great strides were taken to reflect his vision of preserving Aiken’s unique equestrian tradition while maintaining the character and charm of the Aiken community. The AHP is a picturesque 66-acre equestrian facility in the heart of Aiken, South Carolina, home of the Aiken Steeplechase. Complete with four all weather GGT Footing competition arenas and two schooling rings, 228 permanent stalls and new tent pads with permanent water and electricity, it is the perfect venue for a multitude of equestrian disciplines. The Park is a five-minute drive to the charming shops, restaurants and hotels of historic, downtown Aiken. The AHP is proud to mark its second year by showcasing the Aiken Charity Horse Shows at Bruce’s Field on May 3-7 and May 10-14, 2017. These charity shows are the primary fundraising events for the AHPF, as well as an opportunity for its Board to give back to the community. Charities are chosen by the Board based on criteria set forth by our founder, Bruce. We aim to recognize organizations which show compassion and act on behalf of the welfare of horses, dogs and children locally and within the equestrian community. The beneficiaries of this year’s events will be the Equestrian AID Foundation, Great Oak Therapeutic Riding and Children’s Place of Aiken.

Our goal is to produce quality horse shows that respect the great traditions of the sport. We are excited to announce that Week I will be recognized as a World Champion Hunter Rider event. Special classes over the two weeks will include two $25,000 Grand Prix, two Welcome Stake classes for jumpers, a National and International Hunter Derby and the highly-contested Aiken Hunter Classic open to amateurs and professionals. Ringside VIP tables are available to sponsors and those interested in a front row experience. Between rounds, spectators can enjoy vendor row, featuring local merchants from near and far selling clothing, antiques, jewelry and riding apparel. Lellie Ward, International Three Day Event Rider Finds Paradise (Farm) in Aiken, South Carolina Lellie Ward is what Aiken would call a winter colony grandbaby. Her grandfather, Skiddy Von Stade, was one of the original group that headed out of New York each year by train to winter with their horses in the beautiful town of Aiken. Aiken’s sporting motto back then was, “three sports a day”. The Von Stade family consisted of Katherine Steele, Skiddy and their eight children. Polo, Racing (both ﬂat and steeplechase), Shooting, Horse Showig, Fox Hunting, as well as all racquet sports and golf was in the blood of the Von Stades. Skiddy was an amateur steeplechase jockey who traveled to Ireland with friend and famed racing trainer Ambrose Clarke and their horse. Together they entered and won their race. That night they went off to “celebrate” their winnings - Irish style - with a good pub crawl and a stop by the ‘Blarney Stone’; that caused Von Stade and Clarke to miss their ferry back to England - lucky for them and for Lellie, as they were headed straight for a return to the United States via the Titanic!

Preserving Lellie’s family tradition: Joint Master Aiken Hounds

Lellie’s love of horses and sports was bred into her by her grandparents. Lellie’s mother played ﬁeld hockey to the Olympic level and her father was a world class tennis player. Both parents were great golfers as well, but they were not horse people. Lellie initially rode in Aiken’s famous Hitchcock Woods with her grandfather on shooting ponies. As a child she had to wear cowboy boots, use box stirrups and stay on a lead line until she could coerce her grandfather into letting her ride on her own, at age 5. It was her grandmother, Katherine Steele, who gave Lellie her ﬁrst horse, “Mistletoe”, from well-known Horseman Arthur Reynolds, who was in Aiken renting the Von Stade barn one year.

Lellie was introduced to the best in America’s horse world at an early age. Billy Steinkraus and Mike Plum rode the famous “Bold Minstrel” owed by Aiken’s Billy Haggard, out of the Von Stade barn. Lellie’s uncle, Pete Bostwick, was a 9-goal polo player who also rode in England’s Grand National. Her aunt was Master of the Aiken Hounds, a tradition Lellie upheld for thirteen years.

At age eleven, Lellie was Fox Hunting on Long Island with the Meadowbrook Hounds. She joined the Meadow Brook Hounds pony club and was introduced to the sport of Three Day Eventing. Her young mentors were Torrance Watkins and Mike Plumb. From there it was full on towards an Olympic dream of riding on the United States Equestrian team. Paradise Farm is a 110-acre facility that features perfect rolling hills for galloping. There are three enormous rings where Dressage, Show Jumping, Hunter Jumper and even obstacle challenges are held. The 75-acre Cross Country course ﬁeld offers Starter to Preliminary level Eventing, with about eighty different jumps. Paradise Farm hosts four competitions annually that are sanctioned by the United States Equestrian Federation and The United States Eventing Association. United States Polo Association® Promoting Polo in the United States

The United States Polo Association® (USPA) has been elevating the promotion and coverage of the sport of polo over the past year by launching a state-of-the-art website, broadcasting the ﬁnals of three major tournaments on NBC Sports and implementing new social media strategies. Uspolo.org was re-launched in July 2016 and operates as the main source of information for USPA tournaments, association news and youth programs. Additionally, the site allows users to shop for the oﬃcial apparel of the sport, U.S. Polo Assn. A global brand with a presence in 135 countries. U.S. Polo Assn. has over 800 mono-brand stores and maintains a presence in department stores and online, generating annual sales of over $1.4 billion. Together, the USPA and U.S. Polo Assn. are leveraging the thousands of daily users shopping on the site and exposing them to the exciting sport of polo.

The USPA has aligned uspolo.org with other major team sports in the world. Every page has a real-time scoreboard in the header featuring our top tournaments and alerts visitors when a game is streaming live on the USPA Polo Network. In 2017, USPA Polo Network (uspolo. org/video) will stream over 100 high-goal (outdoor and arena), intercollegiate and youth tournament games from around the United States. For our premier tournaments, we create a comprehensive page with schedules, team rosters, game coverage, tournament history, host member club information and upcoming livestreams. Fans can see the progression of the tournament and learn about the top players in the world. If they would like to see a game in person, there is an option to purchase tickets from the host member club.

The program has nearly 40 instructors from around the United States that are required to pass through a rigorous training process. We recommend all new players find a Certified Polo Instructor in their area to begin their polo career.

In an effort to expand the polo audience to other sports fans, the USPA broadcasted the finals of the U.S. Open Polo Championship®, East Coast Open and Pacific Coast Open on NBC Sports. The sport was exposed to hundreds of thousands of viewers that saw some of the best polo games of the year. In 2017, the U.S. Open Polo Championship® final will be broadcasted April 30 at 2:00pm ET on CBS. Tune in!

Polo Development LLC has brought in a myriad of youth players though their growing programs. Members under the age of 20 account for 22% of the USPA membership. These programs include polo for middle school students, interscholastic, 40 college teams and the National Youth Tournament Series. All the programs have a season and allow kids and young adults to play in tournaments and improve by competing against their peers.

The USPA is committed to promote polo in the United States through livestreaming our top tournaments, elevating our digital platforms and supporting youth polo and much more. In previous years, the USPA did not produce in-house articles to post on the website and social media. In 2016, we created over 600 USPA and polo related articles on uspolo.org. We utilize the content to share with our social media following of close to 50,000 polo fans, USPA Members and website visitors. In 2016, the USPA social media platforms saw tremendous growth. Facebook has the highest number of followers, which is about 30,000. We share tournament articles, actionpacked video clips, instructional videos, beautiful photography and more, which led to a 12% increase in followers. Polo and Aiken

The Perfect Combination

�� Aiken, South Carolina has been a polo destination ever since 1882. That year, six years after the sport arrived in America, Aiken’s first game took place at the site of today’s Whitney Field. It was a gala affair, attended by 10,000 spectators. Aiken became so enthralled with the new sport, it “revolutionized the city as far as amusements are concerned,” according to the Charleston News and Courier (March 27, 1882.) By the 1890s, polo was a well-established pastime, and in 1899, Aiken Polo Club became an official member of the United States Polo Association. It is among the oldest clubs in the country, and the only 19th century club that is still playing on its original field. During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Aiken was the polo center of the South. High-ranked players came to spend the winter, competing daily on the 16 fields the city offered. Polo dominated the Aiken sports scene, attracting players who went on to represent the United States in prestigious international matches. Famous players included the 10-goalers Tommy Hitchcock and his father Thomas Hitchcock, Devereux Milburn, Pete Bostwick, Alan Corey Jr., Harry Payne Whitney and Louis E. Stoddard. It was the Golden Age of American polo, and Aiken was at its center. Over the next decades, Aiken’s polo fortunes waxed and waned along with the health of the sport itself. In the 1990s, when polo was on the upswing all over the country, horsemen rediscovered Aiken, sparking a veritable polo Renaissance. Players who arrived in Aiken found the area especially inviting, and before long, polo fields and farms multiplied throughout the county. While Florida continued dominated the winter season and clubs in the Northeast and Midwest held prestigious matches in the summer, Aiken became a midway point, the place to play in the spring and fall, halfway between Palm Beach and Long Island. Today, Aiken Polo Club welcomes players of all ages and abilities: it is an old club, but it is not a stodgy one. It has a thriving junior program, run by Tiger Kneece, a former 7-goal player, who is determined to introduce the next generation to the sport. It also has regular practices and tournaments from the 2- to the 8-goal level. Its Sunday game, a tradition for generations, regularly attracts hundreds of spectators who watch the action from the sidelines or from the shaded comfort of the Alan Lyle Corey pavilion where there is a catered lunch and a cash bar. Aiken Polo Club is just one of three active clubs operating in Aiken today. New Bridge Polo and Country Club, established in 2000 and located about a 10-minute drive from the city center, sets the standard for the quality of its facilities. It has five fields, all seeded with hybrid Bermuda grass, meticulously groomed and maintained. New Bridge has hosted the USPA 26-goal Gold Cup, as well as the 20-goal Monty Waterbury Cup and many prestigious 14- and 16-goal tournaments. In recent years, as the demand for high goal polo diminished, New Bridge responded by offering 8- and 12-goal tournaments. Although New Bridge was built around polo, its attractions are not limited to the sport. The 861-acre facility is a gated community with homes and home sites, farms, townhouses and bungalows, making it the ideal place for someone who wants to live where 50

�� they play. Club members and property owners may use the club’s spectacular clubhouse and restaurant, swimming pool and tennis courts. There is also access to a professionally maintained practice and stick & ball field, trails, roads perfect for hacking, and even jumping and dressage rings at the Stables at New Bridge, a boarding and training facility. If you buy a home in New Bridge you may never want to leave. Aiken’s third club, Wagener Polo was created and is managed by the player and umpire Bill Raab to provide 4- and 6-goal tournaments as well as practices that accommodate everyone. Bill describes Wagener as the perfect combination of competitive and friendly. There are well-attended practices three times a week – chukkers might include first time players, former 10-goal professionals, amateur hobbyists, and serious up-and-comers looking for the next opportunity to raise their rating. Wagener’s tournaments, held on New Bridge’s world class fields, have the look and feel of much higher rated polo. Aiken’s three active clubs are working together this year to ensure that players, many of whom come in from out of town to play, can get as much polo as they want, at whatever level they want to play. Players are getting excited about the upcoming season, and there are already new teams on their way to town. “There is a lot of enthusiasm out there,” says Raza Kazmi, who is the general manager of New Bridge. “In my opinion, on the East Coast, there is nowhere better to play polo than Aiken. The weather is great, the fields are great, its competitive here, it doesn’t cost that much. Antiques and Alzheimer’s memory care �� My parents both suﬀered from Alzheimer’s disease requiring specialized care. I am not a specialist in Alzheimer’s care nor am I trained to give medical advice. That said, as a child of two parents with Alzheimer’s, I know something about the struggles for families living with the disease. Since I have met many other Alzheimer’s families, I wanted to share what I have learned about how heirlooms contribute to happy visits with loved ones suﬀering from Alzheimer’s.

While my parents’ care facilities offered a quiet room, a reminiscence room, and a Snoezelen room to help stimulate the five senses, my parents responded best to personal visits from family and friends. My parents were more responsive and engaged if I brought an object from our family home for them to talk about and touch. If anyone looked in my pocketbook when I went to visit my parents, they would have thought I was crazy with all the collectibles I carried around. The most comforting activities for my parents was discussing stuff that they recognized as their own. Memory Album I regularly brought a memory album filled with small ephemera (paper) mementos and photos. I scanned old photos and printed them out in booklet form from my computer. Digitalization allowed me to reproduce original photos and leave a copy of the memory albums with my parents without the fear of losing original family photographs. The album helped my Mom recall the names of her eight siblings, children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, etc. Dad liked to talk about the summer cottage he built or his cars. Each page had a photo and a caption with names, ages, locations, approximate dates, and descriptions. Photos of family homes, vacation spots, schools attended, church weddings, and childhood pets were featured. The visuals sparked questions and conversation from Mom and Dad. Mom’s Kitchen In addition to the memory album, my Mom, who loved to cook for our big Italian family, lit up when I brought part of her kitchen canister set for our visit. The salt and pepper shakers would get her talking about favorite recipes and before you knew it, she would offer a tried and true baking tip! My Mom’s memory could be sparked by such diverse objects—shown to her one at a time so as not to overwhelm her--as her wedding photo, a Hummel figurine from her collection from the 1950s, or an afghan that she crocheted in the 1970s.

It helped me ﬁnd comfort in the fact that he could recall memories with the aid of an heirloom.

At my appraisal events, I often say that antiques spark all types of emotions. Some objects collected over a lifetime can stir memories even when you think there are none. Case study:

The mare was field bred approximately eight weeks prior. She was seemingly healthy and an exam showed no abnormalities. An ultrasound was done 15 days after breeding and a pregnancy was determined. All was going well. Shortly thereafter, the mare was noticed paying particular attention to male horses by raising her tail, urinating and placing her tail end toward the males. This isn’t the normal behavior of a pregnant mare. This behavior is more like that of an open mare. The veterinarian was called immediately. Before any diagnosis or treatments were done, the veterinarian determined if she was pregnant or not, and if there were other contributing factors. A panel of diagnostic tests was performed as well as an ultrasound. In the above-mentioned case, the scan revealed an enlarged uterus filled with a somewhat cloudy liquid in the place of the embryo. It was diagnosed as a closed pyometria or puss filled uterus. 70

A pyometria is more commonly known by the general public to be diagnosed in small animals and is not as commonly presented in large animals (cows and horses). In the horse, many times the cervix is inelastic or otherwise impaired. Generally, affected mares do not exhibit the normal signs of illness unless they are in poor condition to start with. The uterus could have any number of conditions developing and must be carefully diagnosed to yield the best outcomes. Most infections occur from a bacterial contamination from the time of breeding, or from poor perineal conformation that allows bacteria to slowly work its way up from the vulva and into the uterus.

None of these conditions are an easy fix. Some infections are chronic in nature and need specialized veterinary care to lower the risk of re-occurrence. Whether acute or chronic in nature, full term pregnancies are put at risk and once diagnosed, the condition should be carefully considered before breeding again. A pyometria is not the only uterine problems that can occur. Endometritis is another condition that occurs when the uterus fails to clear foreign objects such as bacteria or spermatozoa and results in an inflammation of the innermost lining of the uterus. A metritis is the infection and/or inflammation that will affect deeper layers of the uterus. A perimetritis is an infection and/or inflammation of the outer surface of the uterus whereas a parametritis is the infection and/or inflammation of the tissues adjacent to the uterus. Overwhelmed yet? Once the pregnancy is further along, other potential hurdles can occur such as placentitis, which is the infection/inflammation of the placenta itself that surrounds the fetus and usually occurs in late term pregnancies. This is just the tip of the iceberg of the problems that can occur along the pregnancy timeline and at birth. None of these conditions are an easy fix.

In conclusion: if you are not a full time breeder or veterinarian and just want to breed your mare, get qualiﬁed assistance. A lot can go wrong from the get-go. There are numerous reproductive facilities that are experienced at the process from pre-conception to birth. They contain the appropriate in house labs, restraint chutes, foaling stalls, cameras, and expertise to get the job done. Your veterinarian must be involved as the overseer throughout the process as well as to be a great source information. Get all exams and test results in writing so that you have a baseline to refer to if there is a problem later on. Do your research ﬁrst then decide if you really want to breed. Don’t try it yourself on a whim as both your mare and the future foal’s life are at stake. Elite equestrians usually believe that their potential to achieve is limitless. They surround themselves with trainers, coaches, and friends who also do not set limits on the success they can achieve. Their mental thoughts are focused in the present, and they possess the motivation and perseverance to turn set backs and distractions into challenges. Focusing on what they want to happen is an outlook I help riders develop which enhances their mental skills to an elite level.

Elite riders are not all born possessing the mental and physical talents and skills which make them highly successful. Ordinary riders can develop into great riders. Half is through good, effective training in which they develop a strong position, effective aids, and master the skills required in their chosen equestrian sport. The other half of their training involves developing the mental skills to allow them to excel in training and competition, especially when all the odds are against them. What are the mental characteristics that distinguish champion riders from ordinary riders? Champion riders are mentally tough. I do not mean this in a sense that they are aggressive or overly cocky. Mental toughness is a term used to describe riders who are able to stay calm, focused, conﬁdent, and cope with challenges while in competition and training.

Elite riders and athletes are able to turn around the “I don’t want X to happen” by reminding themselves to focus on what they want to happen and using coping strategies to allow them to turn negative thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes into ones that are effective for achieving their goals. They learn the routines and techniques designed to help them overcome nerves, use nerves to their advantage, deal with competitive stress, and become courageous when necessary. On the road to becoming an elite rider, perfectionism can be a blessing and a curse. Elite riders learn how to identify and challenge perfectionistic thoughts and tendencies when they hurt their performance, using patience and insight to bring their motivational level back to balance. In future issues, I will be writing about the psychological process that goes into developing an elite, championship mind set.

he breeding of Thoroughbreds of color has been going on for many decades. At ﬁrst the truly rare Whites and Overos, were shunned from tracks. Trainers felt they might spook or unfocus a horse during a race. Our White Lady in Australia was only allowed to work out at night when all others had left the track. There have been some racing successes, but it has been an uphill battle for various reasons. Their popularity was of more a collector’s item than an athlete. Prices soared as will most rarities. Cremello stallion’s like Milkie and excessive white Pinto patterns like Airdrie Apache produced, found a more accepting base with sport horse groups. Since the advent of DNA and discovery of the various W genes, many more have been identiﬁed. Maximum Sabino genes, crème genes, and double dilutes also gave explanation for the wild colorations. But without the continued breeding for racing quality, the fan base grew very slowly. There have been several that have done well enough on the track, but not at the upper Graded Stakes level needed to gain the respect of the true racing community, both here and abroad.

Breeding for color before quality is a problem in all breeds. A new group of serious aﬁcionados of the colored Thoroughbreds have come together to re think a long term breeding program for a number of great proven stallions of excellent pedigree. I became involved last year when asked to stand a True White stallion, Pure White Gold, by Billionaire (Cremello) out of the aforementioned White TB mare Our White Lady, imported from Australia. “Snowman” as he is affectionately known, is a striking stallion, 16 hands, sound and with excellent uphill conformation, bone, and balance. He has a deep pedigree for the X factor, large heart, through his dam’s English and Irish TB breeding. His owner and I have spent hundreds of hours discussing developing a blueprint to bring these horses to prominence both as sport horses and racehorses. We came to the obvious conclusion, invest in stakes bred and raced mares, proven speed and winnings on the track, and DNA them for color and pattern possibilities. The ﬁrst crop will be born this spring of 2017.

Why do I Experience

Constant Lower Back Pain

While I Am Riding

The first thing I should know is if you are a woman, and what saddle you are riding in. But let me answer generically – riding should not be causing you pain anywhere. If you are experiencing pain – especially in the lower back, it could be that you are riding in a gender inappropriate saddle (which usually means women riding in saddles that have been made for men – which most of them quite frankly still are!). Although many men may also have issues with back pain, they are usually stoic and pretty much keep quiet about it. We know many riders who suffer with back issues – backaches, stiffness, even slipped discs! The first thing to look at is their saddle, because many of these symptoms – especially tight lower back muscles – come from the rider subconsciously protecting herself from the effects of a poorly fitting saddle.

The ideal situation is to have loose and supple muscles (for both horse and rider!), which for the rider’s back are supported with strong abdominal muscles. A lower back which is hyperextended indicates a protecting position, because if you look at the rider from the side, she will have ‘collapsed’ at the hip because it simply hurts to sit on the pubic symphysis. As such, her legs respond by shooting forward and she ends up in the dreaded chair position. The muscle attachment is impacted by the amount of pelvic tilt that results from wanting to find a comfortable position. For a female, there are a number of design features in the saddle which should be taken into consideration when determining proper fit. To avoid lower back pain, the easiest fix is to incorporate enough support into the seat at the cantle to ensure the back is supported from behind and the rider is prevented from slouching or hyperextending the back.

He brought both a passion for Italian food and an appreciation of cosmopolitan dining with him to the U.S. Unlike many restaurant owners, Joe did not go to school to learn the business. “I learned from the school of hard knocks,” he jokes. He credits a mix of on-the-job training and how his favorite restaurants were operated, to come up with his own ‘recipe for success.’ Joe artfully blends quality cuisine and customer care to create a restaurant that serves excellent food and a relaxed, elegant ambiance. He wants his customers’ fine dining experience to begin the moment they walk through the inviting door of the 1896 Victorian mansion that houses Casa Bella; with crisp clean surroundings and tantalizing cooking aromas. Casa Bella’s menu is based on Joe’s mother’s recipes, with plenty of world influences mixed in. They also like to make use of local ingredients. Shrimp, Beaufort’s staple, appears in several dishes.
