Holiday time means making your antique objects look their best, particularly your silver serving pieces, flatware, and collectibles. You figure cleaning silver is pretty straightforward— silver polish, cloth, elbow grease. Well, actually, it is not that simple.
First of all, do you know if you have a piece of sterling silver or a piece of silver plate? This matters because sterling silver and silver plate have different properties. Silver plate is a piece of metal, usually copper, that has been plated with a thin layer of silver. If you polish too hard then you may polish away the silver layer and reveal the copper beneath the silver plated surface. How to As silver oxidizes, it will tarnish. There is no stopping this process. And, once you notice even the slightest bit of tarnish, it is time to clean your silver. If you don’t want to use commercial polish, you can try this natural method but go easy on the salt because salt can damage your silver if you are overzealous. 1. Line the bottom of a plastic tub with a sheet of aluminum foil. 2. Fill the tub with steaming hot water atop the foil.
30
3. Add 1 tsp. salt and 2 tsp. baking soda to the hot water. Do not use too much salt because salt is corrosive to silver and silver plate. 4. Place silver items into the tub atop the foil. 5. Leave tarnished items in the solution for no more than 5 minutes. Once you see your silver piece looking clean, remove the piece from the tub. 6. Rinse and gently buff dry using a soft cotton towel. The Don’ts 1. Don’t use rubber gloves because rubber can damage silver plating. 2. Don’t use steel wool pads because they may scratch metal surfaces. 3. Don’t use sponges as they may scratch silver surfaces. 4. Don’t over polish silver plate. It is very easy to rub away the thin layer of silver plating and reveal the copper or other base metal underneath.
www.EliteEquestrian.us
5. Don’t serve certain foods—eggs, mustard, onions-- that will wear away silver plating. If you prefer a specialty commercial silver polish, be sure to choose either a sterling silver or a silver plating polish. Many commercial polishes do the job well. Read labels and consult the manufacturer’s website, if you need more information.

The Horse in Art
2013
The Society of Equestrian Artists Annual Open Exhibition returned to The Mall Galleries, London for 2013. This years’ exhibition featured over 180 exhibits, including sculpture, drawings, paintings and original print.
The Society is made up of over 400 artists ranging from enthusiastic amateurs to internationally renowned professionals and was started by ten friends who wished to exhibit their equestrian work together in London. Thirty four years later it is the largest annual exhibition of equine art in London and is still going strong. Opened by Society President, Sir Mark Prescott, Bt, the exhibition was hosted by Brough Scott MBE.

The feature prize of £1000 is the Best in Show Award - generously sponsored by HH Prince Faisal Salman’s Denford Stud. This year it went to Darrell Warner, a Friend member who had only been with the Society for two years, for an expertly executed watercolour head study of a striking bay – ‘Carlos’. Warner has been a freelance artist for 30 years, splitting that time between both Fine Art painting and Illustration. 1988 saw his first Equine Commission, and living close to Badminton and Gatcombe, he started to pick up Commissions for Eventers. He explains ‘By the very nature of my painting and my approach, it is very important that I get to know exactly what it is that becomes so special, that relationship between horse and rider/owner and subsequently do my utmost to capture it in the painting. 32

‘As we all probably acknowledge, it is really quite difficult to set up stall and make a living painting one given subject, so I remained ensconced within the illustration market in order to continue making a living. And that’s largely how I remain today, albeit my area of expertise has changed and become honed with experience, I am lucky enough to embrace two aspects of practice in a fascinating way in that now I spend most of my time drawing portraits of actors in costume. ‘In the Feature Film business I am employed by Costume Designers to concept their ideas and once actors have been cast (who are rarely available), because of my background, draw those actors in the proposed costume for presentation to the Producers and Director. Working solely in the pre-production stages of a film, the drawings, once www.EliteEquestrian.us
approved, are also a blueprint for the makers who construct those costumes, from Cutters to Leatherworkers, Armourers to Jewellery Makers. Explaining the commission that produced his prize winning painting, Warner continues. ‘Carlos has a very lovely back story in that I did a painting for an event rider 8 years ago whose girlfriend also approached me to paint her horse. However, being very superstitious didn’t want it done until after her horses’ death. ‘So the day arrived in June 2011 when I had the phone call to say that it was time for her horse to be put to sleep in November. I arranged a final visit that September. During that visit, my client commissioned Carlos. As a thank you to the yard owner, who Carlos belonged to, who in 25 years

had not charged a penny for livery. It had to be a huge surprise, so I was able to take a batch of photos there and then and would thereafter arrange visits when the owners were away. Luckily for me, Carlos had grown up with my clients’ horse and they were the best of friends, so I knew that those first photos and impression of Carlos were really important. I’ve yet to witness two beasts with such a special bond. Strangely, I paid Carlos a visit the following summer for some additional reference and he didn’t seem quite the same animal. I did not start the commissions until the late summer of 2012, finishing both by mid November My clients horse was buried on the farm where she was stabled and has a small glade planted in memory of her and I’m told that Carlos will be laid next to her when the time comes. ‘For my part it has been both a challenge and joy to paint both horses. A joy in that it now brings my clients’ horse back to life with her in the form of my painting and the challenge that was to produce a portrait for someone without their knowing. I am therefore extremely pleased that Carlos has gone on to win ‘The Best in Show’. The Society remembers its first President, Sir Terence Cuneo, by awarding the Cuneo Medal to the Full Members whose work is judged to be the most meritorious collection that year. This year’s winner Glynis Mills HSEA, won with a strong collection of six silkscreen prints. She also used her £500 prize money to save a young pony stallion from slaughter in Ireland. He has since been gelded and renamed ToTo Cuneo in honour of the prize and will no doubt feature as a model for her artwork in the future. Last year’s Cuneo Medal winner, Dennis Syrett PPROI RSMA RBA SEA, was again successful, winning the John Noott Galleries Award for Best Oil Painting, for ‘Seville Fair’. Despite being a late starter, not picking up a brush until his early thirties, Syrett regularly has work exhibited in London with many of the major Art Societies and is a Past President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. His work spans many subjects, not just horses, and his success has allowed him to combine his two great interests of art and travel.
Haycock winning the Eggesford Studio Hunting Prize for the second successive year and McCullagh scooped both the Contemporary Art Prize and the Banstead Manor Prize for Best Sporting Picture. The British Sporting Art Trusts’ award for Sculpture was presented to Amy Goodman ASEA for her ‘Maquette for the Romsey War Horse Memorial’. A maquette is the name given to a small scale model for a larger sculpture and fundraising is well on the way to produce the life size version for Romsey War Memorial Park. The park was built in 1921 using rubble from the demolished Remount Depot, which had dealt with over 120,000 horses and mules during the First World War. Maquettes are available in both Bronze and Bronze Resin and 30% of sales will go towards the cost of the larger sculpture. For the first time the Hollyland Trophy went to a drawing, a finely detailed study of an Appaloosa by John Hewitt. Whilst the Norton Way Gallery Prize for Drawing went to Rachel Dray, who managed to go one better with ‘Pony Study’ as she had been on the shortlist for the same prize the previous year. Hannah Merson scooped the Horse and Hound Magazine Prize for Best Racing Picture with ‘First Lot – Warren Hill’, a very atmospheric oil depicting racehorses at early morning exercise in Newmarket. The Arabian horse was also recognised with a new award sponsored by The Arabian Magazine which went to Neil McDonald’s sensitive study on wood of an Arabian Mare. Another new initiative was the linkup between the SEA and the Pony Club for their Young Artist Award. Victoria Campion impressed the SEA Judges with ‘Posy and Me’ and was delighted to collect her trophy – a sculpture by Society Chairwoman Deborah Burt ASEA, in addition to a year’s free junior membership. It is hoped that this new initiative will encourage the young equestrian artists of the future. More firsts as the SEA was sharing its annual exhibition with the winners and highly commended works from the Injured Jockeys Fund 2014 Calendar Competition. The competition was held earlier in the year, exclusively for the SEA membership to produce images for the IJF 50th Anniversary Calendar and also it’s Christmas card. Next years’ Horse In Art exhibition will return to the Mall in the first week in September. For further information please go to www.equestrianartists.co.uk

Add Your Own Riding Experience To Your WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES ADVENTURE! By Patti Schofler
From one end of France to the other, the summer of 2014 will the preferred destination for watchers and riders of horses. Starting at the country’s northern most tip, the World Equestrian Games (WEG) will open its doors in Normandy Aug. 24, filling the days with dressage, eventing, reining, endurance, para-dressage, driving and vaulting, with closing ceremonies Sept. 7.
From a horse’s back, travelers ride to the village of Bonnieux, graced with 16th through18th century homes whose earth-toned stones harmonize with the surrounding land. This once wealthy town had belonged to the Popes of Rome, and is filled with interesting history.
Before or after watching the world’s best horsemen and women, spectators have the opportunity to visit the amazing countryside of France, and what better way than on the back of a horse.
On the trail outside Bonnieux, riders will see Lacoste, the village and haunted castle of the notorious Marquis de Sade. The trail then descends into the Aiguebrun Valley where lofty fingerlike granite cliffs provide a popular venue for cliff climbers, and leads back home, passing Sainte Victoire Mountain, so often painted by Impressionist painter Cezanne.
South of the cliffs of Normandy, either before or after the WEG, riders can journey with High Pointe International Equestrian Tours’ through the Provence of Van Gogh, Cezanne and the Mediterranean Sea, or the Loire Valley of castles and vineyards. A WEEK IN PROVENCE Home base in Provence is the beautiful village of Lourmarin, inspiration to the famous American writer, Peter Mayle, who is a current resident. From there, visitors ride through countryside vineyards, and olive and cherry orchards, soaking in the light so loved by Van Gogh and Cezanne. Riding through the Luberon National Park and along the Durance River, bordered by deep forests of the lofty oak, popular and pine trees, where eagles and brilliantly colored bee birds nest, riders meet views of the French Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. Picnic lunches are provided along the river bank
These three to five hour rides call for intermediate riding ability, on French-bred and Arabian crosses. Pre-WEG rides run Aug. 17,-22 and Aug. 24-29; Post-WEG tours run Sept. 1-7, Sept. 8-13. The price of $1,895 per person, double occupancy,$1,055 single supplement, includes five-nights accommodations at Hotel Bastide, a 3 1/2* country hotel , four guided riding days, horse, guides, all meals, transfers from Aix-en-Provence train station or Marseille airport, taxes. LOIRE RENAISSANCE CASTLE RIDES Both pre and post rides travel through the Loire Valley countryside, from charming lodging to romantic hotels. On a typical day, riders on their French cross breeds journey along the banks of the River Cher
Loire and under the canopies of the Amboise Forest’s chestnut trees. Lunch is at the 16th Chateau de Chenonceau in the extensive gardens created by Diane de Poitiers, mistress to Henry II, and later expanded by Henry’s wife Catherine d’Medici who spent a fortune to turn the castle into the party place of France. The next day may be a ride through the Bois de Boulogne, a favorite hunting forest for the Renaissance kings, to the Chateau de Chamord, the Loire Valley’s largest castle constructed by King Francois I so he could be near his mistress, the Comtesse de Thoury. Lunch at the chateau includes an equestrian exhibition. An evening gourmet dinner and entertainment in elegant French fashion caps off the day. Other rides wind through vineyards and grain fields to Château de Amboise, the favorite choice of Louis XI and Charles VIII, or through the Amboise forest to the gardens of Pagoda de Chanteloup for lunch. Chateau de Nitray is the entrance to one of the beautiful paths of Tourraine, once traveled by Chopin, Balsac and Georges Sand. Afternoon entertainment includes wine tasting at local wine caves. Before the WEG, Aug. 17-23, the ride is priced at $3,027 per person, double occupancy, $835 single supplement, and includes six-nights accommodations, four-days guided trail rides, all meals, horse, tack, guide, luggage transfers, tax and tours.
Provence
The post-WEG ride is priced at $990 per person, double occupancy, $120 single supplement, includes three-night’s lodging, two guided riding days, all meals, transfer to and from train station, horse, guide, tack, and will run from Sept. 8-11.

WHEN THE SENIOR HORSE IS NOT A SNOW-BIRD
Many ask at what age does a horse become “senior”? As in humans, it varies with each individual horse. What may be old for one horse is still very active and healthy in another. As a general rule, I would consider evaluating for “seniorhood” in the early to mid twenties, although I have seen “old” horses in their late teens and others beginning to show their age in their early 30s. Every horse is different. Genetics and lifestyle play a huge role in when they turn “old”. With age come changes, which occur to both the mental and physical state of the body. Joints don’t move as fluidly, balance is altered, the internal temperature regulators don’t function as well, food isn’t digested as efficiently, teeth are worn and eventually fall out, awareness and mental sharpness are diminished, eye sight is lessened, hearing is less acute, and immunity is harder to maintain. In general, nothing functions as it did when in its prime.
During cold weather, we are constantly reminded to make sure the elderly in our human family, or in our neighborhood, are surviving OK. We are told to check in on them and to make sure they have heat, shelter and food. Sound familiar? In all seriousness, the same should apply to your senior horse.
Most senior horses do not have the luxury to live the summer months in the north and the winter in Florida. Snow-birding is generally not an option. Therefore, to keep the senior horse in the winter states, many considerations must be made in order to make both you and your senior horse comfortable.
and wind. This is appropriate if your senior lives outside year round. It may not, however, be appropriate if your horse is used to stall housing and pampering. If transitioning suddenly from show circuit to retirement pasture, plan to acclimate the horse before bad weather sets in. Don’t hesitate to consider keeping the horse stalled with regular turnout. All options should be considered before making a decision. Ask for input from your veterinarian when making this decision. Each horse requires different needs, especially in “seniorhood”. HOOVES Winter months can present with very hard frozen, wet soupy or icy ground. Hard ground can predispose the hoof to bruising while wet soupy ground can lead to bacterial/fungal problems. Icy conditions can be a major problem because of the potential for catastrophic results such as broken bones and torn ligaments/tendons due to slips and falls. You should discuss with your farrier the needs of your horse’s hooves and what might be necessary for winterization at home.
Keep in mind that just because the horse is a senior and is somewhat retired does not mean that hooves no longer need to be trimmed and cleaned out. All senior horses SHELTER need to be on a routine schedule for cleanMake sure your senior has adequate shelter. ing and trimming. FOR SOME HORSES, A LITTLE STARCH IS TOO MUCH When a horse has severe metabolic issues, veterinarians recommend a diet containing less than 10% soluble carbohydrates. While these levels can be adjusted in feed, what about forage? Triple Crown’s® new Safe Starch Forage eliminates the guesswork. We buy grass hays specifically for their low NSC content, then blend in a vitamin and mineral supplement that includes our nutritional EquiMix® Technology. This provides a total diet (hay and feed) with a soluble carbohydrate level below 10%, along with the optimum fiber length required for ideal gut fermentation. either on a full time basis or as a pre-farrier visit to allow for ease in the elevation of the leg for hoof trimming. BLANKETING Most seniors who are maintained outside will grow the appropriate haircoat; however, if they have been pampered in a warm barn, the coat may not be sufficient for a quick weather turnabout. Keep in mind that senior horses are more predisposed to skin conditions and skin infections due to the accumulative undercoat moisture, abrasions, bruising etc. Blanketing material, if necessary, should be waterproof and breathable. If blanketing your senior, routinely check the underlying hair and the blanket. Check for skin/blanket wear problems as well as condition of the blanket. With or without a blanket, brush the horse. Too many times horses are turned out for the winter and never given the proper everyday care their advanced age demands. Remember the horse is retired, not discarded. PHYSICAL CONDITION Seniors need check-ups too! Have your veterinarian check the teeth, parasite level, and general condition by doing a routine physical exam and clinical tests. This will allow determination of the diet type and amount of feed that should be given. A blood chemistry panel will also be beneficial in determining the physiological condition of the horse. Metabolic disorders and system malfunctioning will play major roles in determining what is needed for your senior.
42
Parasite monitoring is also important but know what you are worming for. Have a fecal exam done and know the type of worm present. That way you can buy the appropriate product to get the job done and not just a scattergun approach.
FEEDING Seniors need a different type of diet due to system irregularities as well as physical failures (e.g. teeth missing). Most major feed companies have a specific senior feed in their product line but all senior feeds are not created equal. Some are better for horses unable to chew properly while others are for disease conditions commonly found in the senior horse. Talk with your veterinarian to determine which senior feed would be best. Remember that any feed changes must be done gradually and of course, must be palatable to your horse. If your senior needs the feed to be wet for easier consumption and digestion, feeding indoors may be a better
www.EliteEquestrian.us
solution rather than having the grain mash freeze outdoors before it is eaten. Since pastures may be minimal, hay is important for the nutritional needs. Hay should be available at the rate of 2% of their body weight. Coarse, dusty, moldy or weedy hay should be avoided as not only is it dangerous to the horse, but also is also nutritionally deficient. Keep in mind that “complete” feeds, in which the hay nutrition is included, are a viable option especially for seniors with tooth and/or digestive problems. Placing the hay in hay feeders is important as it will reduce the wastage as well as speed up clean up time by helping to eliminate dirt and mud impaction around the feeding area. Not only is it a potential area for botulism spores to grow when the weather warms up during the day, but it also allows the horse to nibble at rotting hay, neither of which is acceptable. If there is more than one horse in the pasture, keep the hay away from the fence line and make several areas of hay available. That way no one is denied access due to the pecking order. Salt availability is necessary. If housed outside, a salt block should be placed in an accessible area. If stalled, one should be in the stall for easy access. Salt can encourage water consumption, which tends to decrease during colder months. Make sure you monitor intake and output of both the water and food.
Water access is vital to all horses but especially to the seniors. Clean fresh water that is not frozen, or nearly so, is necessary. Horses normally consume 6-10 gallons of water a day and can require even more since juicy pastures are replaced by dry hay. Water must be available at all times. Intermittent watering is not acceptable, especially for seniors. Check the water heater for proper functioning before cold weather begins. If not working properly, they not only can let the water freeze but can potentially shock the horse when the nose is inserted into the water to drink. SUMMARY Winterizing senior horses can be reasonably easy if some planning is done prior to its occurrence. All aspects must be considered. With the help from your veterinarian and farrier, your senior partner can comfortably survive not only this winter, but also many more to come.

Saddle Fit and Tree Angle & Width by Jochen Schleese Certified Master Saddler, Saddle Ergonomist
Pretty much everyone who rides is aware that trees come in narrow, medium, or wide, but did you know that those designations can refer both to the width of the tree and to the angle of the tree? If a saddle fitter tells you that your saddle is a “wide narrow,” this means that you have a saddle with a wide tree width but a narrow tree angle.
We have previously discussed why it is so important that the saddle stay behind the horse’s shoulder. If it does not, and constantly moves forward, the tree points of the saddle will drive into the horse’s shoulders, first producing a buildup of scar tissue on his scapula, and then chipping away cartilage and bone. This is irreversible long-term damage, and can lead to persistent unsoundness and the premature retirement of the horse. What does the tree angle have to do with all of this? In order to avoid this kind of damage, it is crucial that the angle of the tree be adjusted to match the angle of the
56
horse’s shoulder. Think of two sliding doors. If they are properly aligned, one will slide freely past the other. But if they are not, one will jam into the other. It is the same with your horse’s shoulders and the angle of the saddle tree at the tree points. As the horse moves, his shoulder rotates upward and backwards. If the tree angle does not match the angle of your horse’s shoulder, his shoulders will be unable to move freely under the saddle, compromising his movement, sometimes severely. At the very least, a saddle with a tree angle that is not correctly adjusted is extremely uncomfortable for your horse. At worst, it can lead to irreversible long-term damage.
www.EliteEquestrian.us
Measuring tree width How do saddle fitters determine if the tree angle of your horse’s saddle matches the angle of his shoulder? They can use the Sprenger gauge to measure the horse’s shoulder angle. They put the Sprenger behind the shoulder blade, and set it so that the upper arm of the device is parallel to the angle of the horse’s scapula. Then they adjust the tree of the saddle so that the tree angle matches that of the horse’s shoulder. Many saddle fitters use flexible rulers to determine shape over the withers, which can be somewhat remedial if what you really want is to get the angle right.

57
How can you tell if the tree angle on your saddle is correct for your horse? Put the saddle on your horse without a saddle pad. Then check if the angle of the piping on the saddle matches the angle of your horse’s shoulder. If it does, the angle of your saddle’s tree is correctly adjusted for your horse. If you’re still uncertain if the angle of your saddle’s tree is correct for your horse, observe his behavior under saddle. If the tree angle is too wide, there may be clearance on the top of your horse’s withers, but the saddle will pinch the sides of his withers. It will also hit the reflex point (cranial nerve 11) that restricts movement in his shoulders and makes him unwilling or unable to move freely forward. The horse will raise his head or hollow his back, or exhibit other forms of resistance until the reflex point/ nerve becomes numb. If your horse behaves in this manner, it may be because the tree angle of your saddle is incorrect for him. It is important to understand that your horse doesn’t want to be bad, but if the saddle keeps hitting that reflex point, he almost has no choice: he cannot engage the muscles you’re asking him to engage. He cannot do what you’re asking him to do, and this can lead to unnecessary fights between horse and rider. One of the most common ‘excuses’ we hear is “I have to ride him for a while and warm him up before he’ll listen”. What is really happening here is unfortunately that
Determining the shoulder angle with a Sprenger gauge the horse is being ridden until he becomes numb to the pain! So maybe here is the reason why – and even though a saddle may look like it fits while the horse is standing still, the angle may actually change when he begins to move! The baroque style horses especially need to have saddles to accommodate freedom over the withers to allow their huge moving shoulders to really work. Whereas thoroughbreds often have the paradox of ‘narrow wide trees’ (to accommodate narrow shoulders but big withers), with the baroque horses you have usually no or small withers, and really wide shoulders.
Top view of the horse’s back showing the saddle support area (white crosshatching) and the red ‘triangle of doom’
The tree width must be wide enough for the horse’s shoulders to rotate freely under the tree. But too often we see a saddle with a tree width that is too narrow for a particular horse. Not only can your horse’s shoulders not move freely under such a saddle, but the saddle can be driven forward on top of his shoulders as he is being ridden. This will result in all of the problems we’ve already discussed. Trying to make a saddle fit where the tree is too narrow by adding more padding is akin to wearing another pair of socks to make your shoes fit if they’re already too tight – it doesn’t work! (but unfortunately we often see riders doing this in an effort to make a particular saddle fit!)

If the tree width is too wide, the entire saddle may rock or slip from side to side when it’s being ridden, or the back half of the saddle may twist to one side or the other. (but this may also happen when one side – usually the left – is more heavily muscled than the other, forcing the saddle then over to the other side in compensation) Why should saddle makers and saddle fitters consider both tree width and tree angle when fitting a saddle to a particular horse? Tree width and tree angle need to be adjusted together. If the width of your saddle’s tree is correct for your horse, but the angle is incorrect, the saddle will not fit your horse.
A properly fitted saddle will have a tree that is wide enough and an angle that is correctly adjusted so as to avoid hitting the spinalis muscle. This is also a reflex point that inhibits or completely stops forward movement. When a stallion breeds a mare, he bites her on this reflex point so that she stands still, hollows her back, and rotates her pelvis open. In order to locate your horse’s spinalis muscle, draw a line 4” down from the base of your horse’s withers, and then draw a horizontal line back. The saddle must stay off of that triangle - we call this the ‘triangle of doom’ if you want to get really dramatic about it – but the thought is valid; if you pinch the horse in this triangle, you
INCORRECT WIDTH AND ANGLE OF THE SADDLE’S TREE CAN CAUSE PERMANENT, LONG-TERM DAMAGE TO YOUR HORSE.
the Saddlesizer™ to change tree angle and width onsite during a saddle fitting.
Conversely, if the angle is alright, but the width is not, the same will happen. Adding flocking to or removing flocking from the vertical panels of the saddle will not solve the problem – it is the gullet plate that needs to be adjusted. Some of the self-adjustable gullet plates will accommodate angle adjustment, but will not allow width adjustment (over the wither area). At times both the width and angle of the saddle’s tree are incorrect for a particular horse. This can cause permanent, long-term damage to your horse.
doom him to pain and you will not move forward (at least not very well or very willingly). Proper angle and width will go a long way to ensuring your horse is comfortable!

Q A
My saddle looks like it fits properly and the girth seems to be in the right place, but as soon as my horse starts moving, the saddle slides up onto his shoulder. What is going on?
There are a number of issues at play during this situation, and it is not an uncommon one. First of all, the girth will naturally seek the narrowest part (the ‘girth area’ under the elbow) once the horse starts moving. If the saddle billets are not positioned properly, then they will not support the proper positioning of the girth. Occasionally, you may need to cross the billets (so that they run parallel to the muscle fibres) to maintain proper girth position. If the saddle is too long for the horse’s back, it will also be pushed forward during movement. Once the back muscles engage and ‘come up’ the saddle will creep forward until it is over the shoulder. This of course will hinder proper movement of the forelegs, as with each step, the shoulder cartilage will come upwards and backwards and hit the tree points. (very painful, not to mention potentially damaging in the long run. Shoulder cartilage can actually chip off over time!). You want to make sure that your saddle does not extend past the 18th lumbar vertebra – you can follow the hairline up at the flank and feel where the ribs end.
The saddle sliding forward onto the shoulder can cause pain and issues at the shoulder cartilage. And lastly, if the tree has not been adjusted at the gullet to accommodate both the necessary width and angle over the wither and the shoulder, any movement is going to start a reaction by moving the saddle around. You want to ensure that the action here is like a sliding door – the shoulder should be able to ‘slide’ through like a parallel sliding door.

These billets are in the wrong position; the saddle will slide forward when girthed up and the horse begins to move.

Horsemanship With Young Horses
By Alessandra Deerinck
While the relationship with an adult horse is a widely explored territory, when it comes to foals, relating with them, and especially doing it without tack, is still a wide opened subject. Difficulties are present on both sides. By choice or circumstance, human beings at times have to relate to foals, which are young individuals still in the process of learning how to live and relate to others or objects. Whether a professional or an amateur, a human being often encounters difficulties interacting with a foal because its actions are most of the time unpredictable and uncontainable. Obviously the problem is that the relationship cannot be based on asking for trained behavior as it happens in horsemanship with adult horses. Some people tried to solve this situation by going to the roots of it and substituting themselves to the mare in the first moments of life, giving the foal the chance to recognize the human as self. This intrusion often disturbs forever the natural mechanisms of development of the equine individual. I compare this approach to wiring an aircraft carrier with the circuits of a motorboat and pretending that it can serve its purpose. Human to Horse in cooperation with Rancho de Los Cielos has begun a program that combines raising foals in a herd and working closely with them from the very early stages. This offers the foal’s owners the possibility of being actively involved in the process. The foals that are enrolled in this program are all born in 2012 and live together with some broodmares. Some foals are simply living with this herd and not being actively involved in the program because this is what the owners want for them, still recognizing the advantage of a life in the herd at an early stage of development. Human to Horse is also interested in bringing the program to other facilities that are interested in this kind of work, while Rancho de Los Cielos, in addition of being a boarding facility situated in an area well served by trails near Lake Matthews, offers boarding for those who are interested in our foals program.
pate will get the chance to learn how to approach the young horse and personally start building their relationship. Later, when the horses will be mature enough to start training, they will be directed to their owner’s preferred activities with a head start on horsemanship that will make working with them easier. Our approach to horsemanship is called H2H Sensing. It is based on a direct and spontaneous communication that happens from individual to individual and works only through the natural senses of the horse, without the mediation of trained responses. Safety is always a main concern, especially when we deal with foals. In order to interact with a horse “off the line” he needs to be interested in the action and not to be afraid of us. If this is not the case, the horse makes it apparent by staying away and we have to reconsider our actions. This kind of approach allows us to understand the mind of the individual horse we are dealing with, and customize our action to be able to communicate with him properly, and to possibly correct his attitude if needed.
Whenever we had the possibility, we started working with the mare and foal pair since birth, interacting with them without constraints, but in a fenced space, big enough that they could safely get away from our vicinity. hen we work with foals and mares, W the mother’s presence is key in giving
them a clue on how to interact with human beings. Throughout the weaning process we continued to work with the foal without the mare, sometimes staying outside of the fenced area where the foal was until we have a clue that the foal understands the meaning of personal territory and that he knows to stay away from us or to approach us when we give him permission. The very presence of the barrier gives a sense of security to both human and horse, allowing us to stay close to the foal without having to worry about being pushed over and giving the foal the ability to get away from us by simply moving away from the fence. Safety is a very important factor, given that a foal is not easily containable and that it is still learning how to manage its space and express itself with other individuals.
y simply observing horses, anyone can B learn that some of its behaviors, like kick-
ing and biting are absolutely normal between horses, but unacceptable if displayed towards a human being. The best way to avoid being the target of those behaviors is to always be aware of the horse’s behavior while in its presence and to interact with him without tack, keeping the horse away from us when it is “misbehaving” and let it only approach if he is acting in an acceptable manner. Using a stick or a whip, and waving it around us, creating an area that we consider our territory, accomplishes keeping horses away. In case we are deal-

ing with a difficult behavior, a fixed barrier allows us to accomplish this task without any doubt even when we are dealing with a foal.

mother has helped the transition through the weaning phase, where the horse will be more in physical contact with human beings than with other horses. The developmental stage of the life of a horse is fundamental for the part of the horse’s character that is formed through learning by experiencing. Making this stage a positive experience is a sure advantage for both individuals involved in the horsemanship. BOX In nature In the natural state it is the mother that teaches the foal how to live. She is the first to interact with the newborn, followed by the stallion who often keeps away the other members of the herd, without interacting too closely with the foal. Later it is the foal from the previous year that approaches his mother and the newborn. When the new foal is physically and socially ready to interact with other individuals, the mother lets the other foals and adult members of the herd approach. he base unit of a herd with reproductive T purpose is a stallion, some mares and the

young horses reach the reproductive age, the lead stallion disperses the colts while the young mares are incorporated in other herds different than the parental one. Sometimes, young horses that break off of their original herds form the “bachelor herds”, groups of horses that are often unstable from the social point of view. The purpose of those groups is survival in the phase of transition from the parental herd to the reproductive unit. In captivity When a horse is born in the domestic state it is still the mother that first interact with the newborn, followed by the farm personnel. From here and on, the foal’s life is very different than what it would naturally be and the most disturbed factor is definitely the social one. Unfortunately this is a constant fact that will affect the horse for its entire lifetime.
S
ome breeders aim to keep intact, at least in part, the social aspect of a horse’s life by managing herds in a semi feral state. In this state of management it is possible for the stallion to be within the herd for at least part of the breeding season. The young stock remains with the herd of mares for the first two or three years of their life. The complete structure of the herd makes it possible for the individuals to grow up in a social hierarchy and to learn the meaning of space and how to move relatively to other individuals. After all, body expression and movement are the base for the natural communication between horses and this
foal at an early stage. Like it happens with horses of any age and attitude, people tend to loose sight of what is really important for the horse and instead, do what makes the human being who owns the horse feel better. In this instance some people keep foals in enclosures isolated from other horses, but close enough that they can visit, not realizing that by doing so they are taking away from their horse the ability to develop his character and learn how to move and relate to other individuals.
breeding practice allows for the young horses to be raised properly and to develop a balanced personality. Another horse is definitely able to teach a young one how to move correctly and express himself clearly from a natural point of view, while a human being would have some serious problems in this role. It has been observed that in breeding horses in a semi-feral state, there are great benefits to be gained from introducing foals to the human interaction in the first year of life, and then to release them with the herd and let them grow up. The importance of this time spent with other equine individuals is often overlooked, and this is especially true when people purchase a

H2H SENSING In H2H Sensing, the way a human and horse pair works is strictly related with how the two individuals perceive the situation they live, have lived, and will live together. In “real life” individuals receive information from what surrounds them through their senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste), which never get shut down. The same individuals process the information and express themselves by the way they behave. Between two individuals, the leader is the one that has the whole plan in his mind. Between two individuals, the leader is the one in charge of the manner, quality, and complexity of the communication between them, which eventually conveys the plan, leader to follower. The leader is the one with foresight, casting his vision forward one minute to the next or a month down the road, the one who can project how the plan will be carried out and how it will change the relationship between leader and follower. From every interaction both individuals build memories that will inevitably affect their future. In this kind of dialogue a horse can be a follower without being submissive; a rider can be a leader of leaders. When a horse recognizes a human being as a leader, things that could be challenging are instead possible. www.humantohorse.com Ph: 760 896 4424 …ABOUT THE MANGALARGA MARCHADOR The Mangalarga Marchador is a gaited breed of horse imported from Brazil, middling in size, balanced in build, elegant in carriage, and incredibly hardy and handy.
