The Cowboy Challenge goes a step further. It is a ranch obstacle course on horseback. Riders may be required to swing a lariat and work a cow, or mechanical cow. Obstacles are judged on a 0 - 5 scale.
ersatility, or Extreme Challenges, are a great way to learn or sharpen skills while having fun, and even competing.
There are several divisions including: walk/ trot schooling, beginner, novice, intermediate and open. In the case of a tie, a ride off may determine winner.
Horses and riders of all ages and skill levels, and various disciplines can enjoy and benefit from learning Versatility.
Versatility and Extreme Cowboy Challenge are sports that anyone can do and benefit from. It’s a great way to cross train with your horse, which not only improves skills for horse and rider, it also builds confidence and trust.
Versatility requires that the horse and rider team negotiate a series of ranch obstacles, while demonstrating good horsemanship and safe riding practices. Some of the tasks may be roping a stationary object, ground tying your horse, taking small jumps, carrying objects, opening gates, walking over bridges or water, mounting and dismounting- it all depends on your skill level and ability. Versatility takes the old “trail class” to the next level- it provides a great opportunity to learn and/or master skills that might be encountered in a real life situation. Being a sport that helps build horsemanship skills, it’s no wonder that it is fast gaining in popularity. Page 10
This year, J.C. Cutting Horses is changing the format for their Versatility and Extreme Cowboy Challenge competitions. Each day will start with a schooling class. Every rider will work with an instructor as they go through an actual course. Then a walk/trot class for all beginner riders or green horses that will be judged will be offered. Open riders may be required to swing a lariat and work a cow, or mechanical cow. Competitors will complete a judged ranch trail class. Obstacles are judged on a 0 – 5 scale. Highest score wins in each division.

New Bolton Center Veterinarians Seek Answers for Recent Bouts of Foal Diarrhea This spring, veterinarians at New Bolton Center in Kennett Square have been observing an increased number of newborn foals afflicted with diarrhea. While short bouts of diarrhea are not unusual in foals, the breeding farms being assisted by New Bolton Center, part of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, are experiencing a much larger percentage of foals with diarrhea than have typically been seen in previous years. The diarrhea is often seen within the first day or two after birth, and is characterized by watery manure, dehydration, and is frequently accompanied by signs of colic. Most of the foals survive with appropriate care such as intravenous fluids and antibiotics to prevent bloodstream infections from the leaky intestine.
So far, tests for the common causes of foal diarrhea have been negative, suggesting that this outbreak is caused by a more unusual pathogen.
Horse owners and caregivers can be proactive in preventing the spread of the infection both on their own property, and to other farms. Dr. Nolen-Walston states, “Most diarrhea is caused by fecal-oral transmission, meaning that it is spread from manure contamination coming in contact with the foal’s mouth.” She advises taking steps to prevent the spread of any contagious foal disease. “Ideally, mares should be placed into a well-cleaned and disinfected stall, and not moved to multiple stalls before foaling. Mares that have affected foals should be separated as completely as possible from In an effort to diagnose the outbreak, cliniother pregnant mares and other mare and cians at New Bolton Center sections of Inter- foal pairs. Equine Trusts Historically, horses have been the most faithful animal companion of the Americans. Without horses, the West would never have opened and today, while the use of work horses has essentially disappeared, Americans continue to have a passionate relationship with their horses. They ride them; race and show them; jump with them or just enjoy their unique presence in a pasture. In fact, there are about 9,500,000 horses in the United States. The direct economic impact of the horse industry on the US economy is estimated at $39 billion dollars and approximately 1.4 million persons are employed full-time in the horse industry. Though racing is often the first horse activity that comes to mind, there are, in fact, an estimated four times more horses involved in recreational activities. The life expectancy for a horse is around 25 years, with many horses living 30 years or more. The unique relationship that owners maintain with their horses is such that these are almost considered as a valued member of the family and they are increasingly treated as such . Not surprisingly, many Americans do attempt to secure a continued peaceful life for their cherished horse, should they no longer be there to provide for them. While their owners are around, horses develop and grow accustomed to a certain life style and routine, which, unfortunately, is often drastically changed with the death or the disability of the owner. Too often, the horses end up neglected, unwanted and ultimately, euthanasized due to insufficient estate planning. HORSE CARE PLANNING The most common form of planning for a pet or a horse’s continued wellbeing is to trust a family member or a close friend as caretaker when the owner is disabled or passes away. Some owners will reach informal agreements with a caretaker or may Page 14
even include a provision in their will appointing a caretaker. This may offer a simple solution, requiring limited planning but in reality, many events can interfere with the expectation of the owner that his or her beloved animal companion may continue to enjoy a peaceful existence.

Even with the best of intentions, the caretaker may not now or at a later date be able or willing to fulfill his or her expected function:
horse, to include feed and diets; daily habits; riding routines and bedding; veterinary and groomer visits; disabilities, allergies and other physical conditions and, ultimately, how to dispose of the body when the pet dies. The instructions should also indicate the name, addresses and phone numbers of the vet, the groomer and the location of the animal’s records.
• The horse may interfere with the caretakers’ own family relationships and lifestyle. • The caretaker may not have the ability and appropriate sensitivity to deal with horses. • The caretaker may not have premises compatible with horse care. • The caretaker may have to relocate for work or personal reasons. • The caretaker may become disabled or passes away. • The caretaker may not have the financial means to provide for the horse, especially if extensive veterinary costs are involved.
However, the more comprehensive the list becomes, the more burdensome the services expected from the caretaker become, bringing about various issues: • The caretaker may no longer be willing to take care of the horse. • The caretaker may not follow the instructions of the owner and frustrate the expectations of the owner. • The cost of implementing the will of the owner may increase substantially.
The owner may further insure their pet continued well-being by improving the planning for their horse’s future. The initial step for the owner is to create an extensive set of directives for their horse and to provide it to the caretaker. Such list should describe the lifestyle and daily routine of the
To alleviate these problems, the owner may draft or have his attorney draft a Horse Care Agreement, spelling out the duties and the level of care expected from the caretaker.

The formality of the relationship so created does expand the planning process as to include compliance provisions, default considerations and ultimately, address the funding that is required to secure the continued well being of the horse. The maintenance cost of a horse will vary substantially from state to state and will further depend on the condition of the horse, the level of care and the facilities that are provided for the horse. The cost can vary from $350 to well over $1,000.00 a month. The owner may in his or her will provide for monies to cover the cost of taking care of their horse when they are no longer able to do so. However, monetary considerations need to be carefully addressed, as various conflicting interest may interfere with the wishes of the owner: • Heirs may resent the fact that, to their financial detriment, some monies are set aside for the wellbeing of a horse. • A caretaker who receives money for his or her services may seek to perpetuate an income stream past the life of the horse.
• The monies set aside for the horse can be misused and diverted to other purposes. • Below par caretaking may financially benefit a caretaker. • The residual of the monies set aside for the horse must be disposed of in some way after the death of the horse and this, again, may create conflict of interests that should be addressed. • The monies set aside for the horse’s wellbeing can be mismanaged.

Where will they go, when you are gone?
Horses are an integral part of our unique American lifestyle. The attachment that owners have for their horse is at time closely akin to the love and affection they have for their own family members. Failure to address the future wellbeing of their horse results too often in neglect, abuse and abandonment. Equine Trusts can be the solution.

Complete Feed Facts

“Complete kit included.”
“My life is so complete.”
“I feed my horse a complete feed.”
What does the word “complete” actually mean? According to Merriam-Webster the definition is “having all the necessary or normal parts, components or steps; entire.” Life may be complete until it changes…then it’s not. The kit may be complete until you discover it’s missing a crucial part…then it’s not. And “complete” horse feeds are not complete. “Complete” feeds are advertised as containing all the needed nutrients and fiber required by the horse. But they cannot provide all the nutrients required by every horse, in every situation. “Complete” feeds do not provide the necessary long-stem fiber needed to maintain healthy hindgut function. Reading the information on the feed tag can tell you if the product will come close to meeting your horse’s required dietary needs based on age, health and activity level. A product designed for a performance or young growing horse will contain a higher amount of grain – resulting in a higher energy level. This product will also be fortified with protein, vitamins and minerals. A product designed for mature, idle horses Page 20
will contain less grain (lower energy level) and not contain high levels of protein, vitamins and minerals. The fiber level will be higher. There are also “complete” feeds designed for older, mature horses. These formulas will be easier to digest. Many products will have higher levels of phosphorus and vitamin C when compared to other complete feeds. These two nutrients are thought to be hard for senior horses to utilize. More research needs to be conducted. When reading the feed tag notice how much of the product must be fed per day. Because the product is intended to replace the forage and provide a balanced diet, the amount will be large. Most products will recommend approximately one and a half (1 ½) to two (2) percent of the body weight per day. A 1,000 pound horse would need
Elite Equestrian
15 to 20 pounds of the product a day. Feeding a complete feed twice a day is not going to work. The large amount needed for the horse must be divided into four (or more) small meals. The 1,000 pound horse will require four meals of three and three-quarters (3 ¾) to five (5) pounds at each feeding. It’s not going to take long for the horse to eat the allocated amount. So what does he do during the rest of his time?
require five (5) pounds a day. Divide this amount into several small meals. The healthiest way to feed the horse is to provide at least two (2) percent or more of the horse’s body weight in good quality forage. If the forage is lacking nutrients based on the horse’s age, activity level and health, then a product that provides the missing nutrients must be provided.
Do not be surprised if the horse eating a complete feed develops vices and health problems. These may include weaving, cribbing, stall walking, eating manure, tail and wood chewing, colic, ulcers and other digestive problems. Horses are designed to utilize long-stem fiber – not pellets. If a complete feed must be fed, try to provide at least one half (1/2) pound of longstem fiber for every 100 pounds of body weight per day. The 1,000 pound horse will

Act Now To Nip Pest Problems in the Bud for Show Season STATE LINE TACK AND STATELINETACK.COM GALLOPS INTO ACTION FOR SPRING EQUINE PEST CONTROL Spring is the best time to start preventing horses from falling victim to nuisances associated with fly, small gnats and biting insects, which can result in injuries along with potential health and performance issues. In addition to the need to maintain a healthy, bump-free and glossy coat for horse that need to be in prime show form this spring, key issues to watch out for include: • Leg stomping or running from flies are behaviors that horses engage in to try and avoid insects. An overly sensitive horse can begin to run or stomp, causing the potential to overheat, catch themselves or become so irritated that they are then difficult to ride or compete. • When horses stomp their legs to rid them of flies, this can result in leg inflammations and tendon damage. • Ear mites are frustrating and painful for the horse and equally difficult to treat once entrenched, often causing lingering behavioral issues. • Horses can incur coat damage due to bumps, itching and rashes. State Line Tack’s selection to beat these problems before they start includes the largest selection of fly sheets with 14 different types in a range of styles and sizes including Horse, Foal, pony and miniature, covering the most comprehensive brand selection that includes Saxon, Defender, Cashell, Equs, Got Flies, Kensington, and Kool Coat. Style assortments include front closures, reflectives, soft mesh materials, durable textilene. Neck covers and fly boots are a must for attending horse shows during peak fly season, and at starting prices of $9.99, cost is no excuse to not protect your horse. Nowhere can a more diverse selection of fly masks and browbands/ear protectors be found. Statelinetack.com offers over 20 styles in sizes ranging from foal to horse and Page 24
offers numerous fit and ear options to suit any bridle or halter, with both riding and pasture models. Horses can arrive at competitions calm, protected and looking sharp in the Kensington fly mask with fleece trim, the Lami-Cel Elegance fly veil and Defender leg wraps, while the extensive choices of soft-mesh fly sheets keep show horses cool and protected in style. Saxon, Centaur and Kool Coat offer some of the most popular options in sheets. Statetlinetack’s catalog and web site both feature the best selection on topicals and sprays. Their regular and natural options include brand names ranging from Farnam to Abosrbine, Equicare, Manno Pro, Pryanha and Cut Heal. To complete a wellrounded pest control program, the catalog and website also offer numerous products for controlling pests in and around the barn as well as products that mitigate the propagation of flies from their larval stage in the form of feed supplements, such as SimpliFly, Bug Check, Equitrol, Solitude IGR and others. State Line Tack encourages all equine enthusiasts to join their online community to find out more about which options and combinations of treatments might be best for their horse. State Line Tack’s equine experts urge horse lovers to focus attention on pest control as part of their training regimen this season for the best results in the show ring.

TRAINING TIPS BY JAMES GEIBEL
Use of the Aids in Riding and Showing
In previous issues, I have explained the proper use of these aids, which are the legs, the seat, and the hands. These are all imperative to create a proper position where the rider can communicate clearly to their mount. The term riding in hand or in the bridle describes a pleasing look. The look is very easy to try and imitate through the use of hands alone but does not work. Truly in-hand is the result of two opposing forces, the legs sending the horse forward and the hands holding the forward movement in a balance. In finding the correct balance of leg to hand the horse will start chewing on the bit, soften at the poll and round the neck without losing the step forward. This is the look.
What is riding “in hand”? Go to a horse show, and you can find riders of all levels trying to achieve this mythical “thing”. Hate to break it to you, but this thing is not an end, rather it is the means to an end—the end being a language between the horse and rider which is the result of classic and proper skills working in unison to create a fluent language between the horse and the rider.
over my years and I teach that the quality of the horse’s movement depends entirely on the quality of the horse’s step. The inhand look does not necessarily mean that the horse is engaged and is “stepping up”. Rather, many times one can look around a horse show and spot the in-hand look with a horse shuffling along with his hind legs. This has no place in the hunter/jumper world. Perhaps the only place it is acceptable and sought after is in the western and English pleasure classes.
Now we have a horse in hand, what now? We must practice the basic schooling movements with the horse responding in a collected and balanced fashion. From up and down transitions to the figures 8 and lateral exercises, we must start at the walk The look of being in hand is, as I said, a reand progress to the trot and then canter. As sult. riding is that it is necessary to “pull” a horse down with one’s hands (fig. 1). Not only is this ineffective in terms of balance, it is actually counter-productive in that it causes the rider’s position to collapse and makes the other aids impossible to use. When riders use this “hands next to their kneecaps” position, the result is perhaps a step or two in the in-hand look, but without the engagement behind and the look most certainly does not last. In reality, the pressure this position causes is further down on the bars in the horse’s mouth, and causes quite a bit of discomfort (which causes the temporary yield in the poll). Therefore, it is necessary to remedy this bad habit if you do it, so as to take the next step in creating a connection with balance and collection. In previous issues, I mentioned that there is a strength that is required to be able to sit up and carry your hands so as to have a straight line from the elbow to the bit (fig. 2). However, if you work to achieve this position, you will find yourself sitting more upright with a more useful leg and seat. You can also sit up and ultimately look up and around. Picking a rider’s hands up fixes so many bad habits, let alone makes for a happier horse through balance and strength. Jim Geibel can be reached at JHGeibel@optonline.net Page 28

Make Money With Horses
You’re a horse owner, a horse business owner or both; you need insurance. For the business you may need commercial general liability, an umbrella liability policy and “care, custody and control” coverage.
As a horse owner, you may want mortality and theft, or something to cover colic and non-elective surgeries as well as major medical for accident, sickness or disease. If you are in the breeding business there is coverage for stallion and mare infertility; if you are showing, you may opt for a “loss of use” (the function insured must be named) policy. Whatever you are considering, you must weigh the costs against the risks against the possible losses. If you are in business, the risks are high that sooner or later there will be a claim; be prepared.
If you’re not in business, then a horse is not an investment, he’s a liability…still, you may wish to insure for his “value” and you may wish to protect yourself against a claim by having a “liability” policy.
price: Rating, Reputation and Exclusions. The rating of the company is, in a sense, its ability to pay a claim. Don’t accept a policy from an agent whose underwriter has a rating less than “A+”. Check a company’s reputation by talking with other horse owners; if they’ve had a problem, they’ll be delighted to tell you. Your relationship with any company will be great as long as you pay the invoice and there is no claim; problems do develop when you make a claim, and you don’t want problems.
When you buy a specific policy you expect specific coverage. But often it is more important to know what is being excluded than what is being covered. Make the company provide a complete listing of the “exclusions.” Ask for the “exclusions” to be separated out of the policy so nothing is missed. Now comparison shop! (Insurance is covered in more detail in the online course: Legal Aspects of Horse Management at www.horsecoursesonline.com)

The most beautiful sunny skies shone over 364 contestants and horses from all over the U.S. and Canada at the 2010 Josey Reunion Round-Up for former students. The participants battled over $100,000 in cash and prizes including a decked-out BIG TEX/CM Trailer, Circle Y & Billy Cook Saddles, Bob Berg Championship Trophy Buckles, Purina Feed, United Vet Products, and more! “We could not enjoy the freedom that we have this weekend without those men and women in the armed forces that have served our country”, Randy Adams and Coy Huffman announced as the weekend began with a salute to our veterans and the presentation of the colors by the Marshall High School ROTC under the direction of Major Mayfield. Over 2000 people came to the Josey Ranch to enjoy food, fun and fellowship amid the excitement of barrel racing and pole bending. The champions in each division won saddles along with a beautiful, custom designed Bob Berg Buckle. The 2D Championship went to Amy Swan of Olney, Texas riding Boons Prescription with a time of 16.626. The 3D Championship winner was Gilmer, Texas cowgirl, Kari Arreola Henson riding Pinto with a time of 17.150. And the
4D Championship went to a great friend of the Josey Rance, the one and only Kris Suard of the Black Star Ranch in Houma, Louisiana, riding her horse Phoebes Smokin’ Cat to claim a time of 18.147. Andrea Whiteside of Kilgore, Texas, riding The Right To Run won the Senior Division Championship with 16.574. The Reserve Champions were 1D: Abby Pursifull of Arthur City, Texas riding Truckstop with a time of 16.217, 2D: Jana Guthrie of Canton, Texas riding Gee with a time of 16.635, 3D: Cooper Clinton of Carthage, Texas riding Fortune Five with a time of 17.166, and the 4K Reserve Champion was Sara Funderburk of Bossier City, Louisiana riding Money with a time of 18.234. On Thursday night, the Josey Ranch kicked off the Reunion with a ground shaking Pole Bending competition. Keily Abney of Hugo, Oklahoma, riding Dallas, made a streaking run of 20.719 to win the 1D. The 2D was won by Brittany Ellis riding Tory with a time of 21.721, and Jolie Null of Marshall, Texas riding Doll captured the 3D with a time of 22.721. Two college scholarships were awarded immediately following the church service. The Thomas Mitchell Scholarship was awarded to Ashton Michelle Wright of Queen City,

Fourteen-year-old Blue Grass Iowan, Mesa Leavitt began making history in the rodeo world in 2005 with her horse, Junior’s Genuine Doc aka “Junior”. She wowed the crowd at this year’s event, and has won the prestigious Josey Jr. World title backto-back and four times overall in ‘05, ‘06, ‘08 and ‘09. She holds the Triple Crown of barrel racing winning the Josey Jr. World, All American Youth, and NBHA Youth World. Sitting tight in her Martha Josey/Circle Y Ultimate saddle, holding fast to her Josey Beagley Know Reins attached to the Josey Million Dollar bit, and styling her Cowgirl Tuff Jeans, the official Jeans of the Josey Ranch, she and Junior ran to win with an outstanding tme of 16.112. Mesa’s parents purchased Junior from Suvoy and Cheryl
Rosser through the Josey Ranch and what a winning combination they have become. Mesa took home a slew of cash and prizes including a beautiful trailer donated by BIGTEX/CM Trailers, a Circle Y Saddle, Bob Berg Championship Trophy Buckle, a Don Wasson Bit for the fastest time, quality Hy-Flex products by United Vet Equine, Purina Fedd, and much, much more.
Texas. The Green Beret SSG Jamie Alford Scholarship winner went to Kelci Kennedy of Linden, Texas. It was delivered tearfully by Jamie’s mother, Gale Alford who spoke of her son’s passing, and loving commitment to barrel racing. Former Green Beret, Judge Jim Ammerman, presented the award and gave a salute to the fallen soldier.
The Oldest Horse Award, as well as the Fastest Veteran Award, went to Elaine Lambino on 32 year old “Peppy”. The Fastest Pain Horse Award went to Royena Clifton on Cooza Crisp with a 16.503. Contestant Hailey Poole’s grandfather, Roger Dees, won the Martha Josey Ultimate Circle Y Raffle Saddle.
In honor of Martha Josey’s great horse, Sonny Bit O’Both, the only horse to ever win the AQHA and WPRA World Championships in the same year, a very special award was given to the Horse With The Most Heart. This year’s honor went to Kylie Abney’s horse Southern Spunk aka “Dallas”. Despite broken withers just five years earlier and a devastating diagnosis that this horse would never run again, the 23 year old “Dallas” won the 2010 Reunion round-Up Pole Bending event with a time of 20.719!
“We have had over 100,000 students through our clinics and the Reunion is such a great time to see our students again and to see their progress and success. Congratulations to all of the 2010 Josey Reunion RoundUp winners!”- R.E. & Martha Josey.

A Magical Encounter between Horse and Man Gallops to the Meadowlands On Wednesday, June 9, Cavalia makes its premiere stop in the New York tri-state area. Enjoyed by over 3 million people in Europe, Canada, and U.S. cities including Washington D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, Atlanta, and Miami, Cavalia is a grand-scale spectacle involving acrobatics, live music, projected images and more than 100 performers, including a troupe of 60 magnificent horses from all over the world. From June 9 – 20, 2010 under the White Big Top at the Meadowlands, Cavalia will pay tribute to the harmony between horse and man. Cavalia was created by Cirque du Soleil co-founder, Normand Latourelle. “My passion in life is to make people dream. When I first introduced Cirque at Battery Park in 1988, I always wished I could return and introduce something new to the New York area. Cavalia took nearly 10 years to conceive and I am thrilled to present this one-of-a-kind show.” Cavalia is not just a show for horse-lovers, it is a lavish orchestration of multimedia, equestrian and performing arts designed to entertain people of all ages and backgrounds. Under the world’s largest touring Big Top, which rises 100 feet above the ground and spans more than 26,264 feet, 60 of the most magnificent creatures on the planet will express themselves in all their beauty, grace and strength on a 160-foot wide stage. While the horses gallop and cavort and, at times, run free completely unbridled, the show incorporates acrobatics, original live music and stunning special and lighting effects to create a dreamlike setting. For its exclusive run at the Meadowlands, Cavalia will be presented under its White Big Top. Tickets are on sale now, and are priced from $56.00 to $126.00. If sitting in the stands is not enough for you, the show can be customized for the complete VIP experience from $156.00 to $206.00, including a Horse Lovers Package that lets patrons tour Cavalia’s stables, and the Rendez-Vous Package that includes a tour of the stables, a cocktail/dinner reception and much more. Special pricing is also available for children, students, and senior citizens.
