Bow Brickhill Stables is located in Holland Township, NJ approximately 6 miles west of Pittstown, NJ, 1 1/4 hours from New York City, and 1 hour from Philadelphia. We are situated on 71 beautiful acres with miles of finely manicured bridle ways that meander around our pastures and along our miles of fence lines. Our outdoor arena is 200’ x 300’ and is outfitted with a dressage arena and a jump course. Our outdoor has bank jumps that transition one into our cross country course. Our cross country course includes stadium jumps, banks, coops, dog houses, brush boxes, a ditch, liver pools and benches. We have an oversized indoor arena that is 220’ long with dust controlled footing and also outfitted with jumps. We feel that turnout is an important element in keeping horses content and sound. We have 17 turnouts for both individual and group turnout. Horses are rotated throughout the day and receive a minimum of 5 hours of turnout per day. We have automatic solar waterers in most of our turnouts to ensure that horses have access to water year round. Our stalls are all 12’ x 12’ and have automatic waterers. We use triple screened bedding that is kiln dried and therefore, has a lower dust content and higher absorption rate. We feed high quality, locally grown hay and Nutrena, Triple Crown and Agway feeds. The care of your horse comes first at Bow Brickhill Stables.

Equestrian Sport Productions to Host 2012 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival and New Global Dressage Festival

The 2012 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) is the world’s largest and longest-running horse show, combining hunter, jumper, and equitation competition for 12 weeks from January 11 to April 1. New this year, the Global Dressage Festival will be one of the world’s largest international and national dressage winter circuits. The GDF will feature five CDIs, including a 5* and the first non-championship CDIO Nations Cup in the Western Hemisphere, and 10 U.S. national events. The newly created Global Dressage Festival will be staged from January 24 through April 15 at a venue being constructed specially for dressage as part of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) show grounds in Wellington, Florida. The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) is considered the most recognizable equestrian sporting venue in America today. It is a 160-acre “Equestrian Lifestyle Destination” nestled in the heart of an 8,000-acre equestrian paradise in Wellington, Florida, located only 20 miles west of Palm Beach Island and 15 miles west of Palm Beach International Airport. The PBIEC showgrounds offer spectators a picturesque environment to enjoy equestrian competitions. There are a number of hospitality and vendor pavilions dedicated to dining, shopping and VIP areas. There are 1,500 grandstand seats, 80 VIP boxes, private chalets and hospitality pavilions that surround the International Arena, providing up-close views for all spectators.
Dining, shopping, and social opportunities abound in the world-class Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Equestrian Sport Productions is dedicated to providing a first-class experience for exhibitors and spectators alike. This year’s FTI WEF will play host to the best hunters and jumpers in the world, and will be the spot where riders will contest for a spot on the next U.S. Show Jumping Olympic Team. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) announced the PBIEC as the location of the USEF Selection Trials for the U.S. Show Jumping Team for the 2012 Olympic Games. The competition will be hosted by Equestrian Sport Productions from March 21-24, 2012. This competition will also serve as the 2012 USEF Show Jumping National

Championship. It will consist of four rounds over three days of jumping. Once again the show leads the country in prize money with over $6 million awarded, with the highlight class, the $500,000 FTI Consulting Finale Grand Prix, CSI 5*, moving to week 12 and running on Saturday, March 31st. The 2012 FTI WEF will host many exciting competitions, including the only Nations Cup in the United States, the $75,000 FEI Nations Cup presented by G&C Farm. Riders will have two chances to gain points in qualifying for the FEI World Cup Finals, and they will have the opportunity to compete on the grass derby field at The Stadium on four occasions. Throughout the 12 weeks, riders will also vie to be one of the best four show jumping riders for a bonus check in the $100,000 FTI Consulting Rider Challenge. The FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments® will return Page 16
in 2012 and hope to improve on their fundraising goals of raising more then $1.5 million dollars for 32 local charities. The FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments® is one of the top five fundraising events in Palm Beach County. The Suncast® 1.50m Championship Jumper Series will return this year with classes in weeks 1-12. These classes will also qualify horse/rider combinations for the $50,000 Leading Horse/Rider Combination Award. The Suncast® 1.50m Championship Jumper Series is a popular class every week, and with riders vying for another rider bonus, it is sure to be a top competition to watch. The winning horse/rider combination will win $25,000; second receives $15,000, and third place will win $10,000. Hunters will have two feature events during the circuit in addition to their weekly divisions. The WCHR Hunter Classic Spectacular of Palm Beach will return to Saturday night on February 18. The best hunters of the circuit will compete head to head under the

lights in this popular event. The $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby will cap off the 2012 FTI WEF by being the feature event on Sunday, April 1. The class will be held on the grass derby field at The Stadium, giving horses and riders the perfect opportunity to show off their talents on a traditional surface. The FTI WEF will also host the Young Horse Show Series and Year-End Championship in partnership with North American Studbook and Spy Coast Farm. These show events are for all sport horses aged 1-5 who are intended to compete as a jumper, hunter, eventer or dressage horse. The shows are attended by breeders, trainers, riders, owners and spectators and should prove to be an ideal marketplace for young horses.
The College Preparatory Invitational (CPI) Horse Show will return to the PBIEC this winter for its second annual event during the 2012 FTI Consulting WEF. Following an extremely successful inaugural event in 2011, the CPI has announced many exciting changes and improvements to the program for their 2012 show. The competition will be bigger and better than ever with more classes, more riders, and more scholarship opportunities. The second annual CPI competition will take place on January 13-15, 2012. The show will be based on the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) hunt seat equitation classification, and the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA).

The CPI will continue its mission in 2012 to prepare and educate student riders in grades 8-12 about the format of college equestrian competition, encouraging academics and horsemanship, and providing the riders with resources to create their desired college equestrian experience. The Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Series, presented by Dutta Corporation in association with Guido Klatte, will be another proving ground for young riders, this time for those with show jumping aspirations. With four events, including a team event, it helped young riders prepare to represent their country in international competition. Last year, over 60 riders competed in the Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Series, presented by Dutta Corporation in association with Guido Klatte, and many went on to win in Europe or at Spruce Meadows, the NAJYRC or premier national shows like the Washington International Horse Show.

TREC the new sport for equestrian enthusiasts By David Hasbury-Snogles, Director of Development, USNETO
“The sport of TREC encompasses all the riding styles and disciplines of good horsemanship. The cross-training needed to participate makes better horsemen and women out of all who take part”. TREC is a fairly new sport in Europe and little more than a ‘fledgling’ one here in the USA, but is becoming ever more popular by the day. The origins of TREC are not easy to determine, but the sport does appear to have developed in France over a period extending from about 1961. The first national event involving the three phases of today’s TREC competitions took place at Fontainebleau in 1980, and in 1987 the title T.R.E.C. (Techniques de Randonnee Equestre de Competition) was adopted by the sport, with the first World Championship being held in the French Alps in 1997. The International governing body for the sport F.I.T.E. (Federation Internationale de Tourisme Equestre) now oversees all the standards and requirements for international competition, with each Member Nation (including the USA) having a voice within it. TREC did not really take hold in the United Kingdom until 1998 but has since gone Page 22
from strength to strength with the backing and organization of the British Horse Society, and is officially known as BHS TREC over there. Events are now held all over Europe and different levels of competition have evolved to maintain a balance in difficulty, ranging from starter level (Level 1) to the more challenging, taxing and international standard, Level 4. The sport is very popular with recreational riders, but can be considered complementary rather than competing with the traditional and established sporting disciplines – Show Jumping, Dressage, Eventing, Endurance and even Fox Hunting. TREC is aimed at getting the rider to develop a broad range of horsemanship skills, and focus on doing them well. A TREC competition usually runs in three phases – the POR, the CoP, and the PTV which at the lower levels can take place on the same day, but in higher level competi-

tion it is carried over to a second day. There are currently 4 levels of competition with Level 1 being the easiest and Level 4 being the top, international competition standard. The three phases of the competition are briefly summarized below. POR – Parcours d’Orientation et de Regularite Basically this is a navigational ride, or orienteering on horseback. Competitors are required to ride anything from the equivalent of 5 miles to 28 miles depending on the level of competition, whilst following a route marked on a map - but not marked on the actual trail! Several checkpoints are included at undisclosed points on the route to check competitors’ times and to ensure that they are following the set route. Set speeds are imposed by the organizer, so competitors must try to complete each stage as near to the fixed time as possible, whilst accurately following the route. Competitors must also carry a specified amount of equipment with them – this varies depending on the level of competition and at the higher levels an equine fitness inspection (a Vet check) is included. Each competitor starts the course with a set number of points and penalties are then deducted for incorrect routes, falling outside the set speeds and not carrying correct equipment.
Page 24
CoP – Control of Paces or Gaits This requires the rider to demonstrate an ability to influence the horses’ paces whilst first cantering and then walking along a marked corridor up to 160 yards in length. The objective is to canter as slowly and walk as quickly as possible while maintaining the required gait. Points are calculated against a time chart, and breaking gait at any time loses all points for that section. PTV – Parcours en Terrain Varie This requires the rider to negotiate a number of obstacles (usually 16) over a course not exceeding 3 miles within an optimum time. The course is designed to test the competitor’s ability to deal with the type of obstacles that might be encountered during a hack or trail ride. Points are awarded for style and effectiveness as well as for keeping within the optimum time. The obstacles can combine ridden and in-hand types such as staircases (up or down), riding under low covering, jumps (maximum of 3’3” in height), going through gateways, and water crossings.

Try Outs For Team USA
The Appeal of TREC for Sport and Are Underway! Recreation The words of the founding member and current President of USNETO (the governing body for the sport in the USA), Mary Harcourt, sums up the unique appeal of TREC: “The first time I heard about the sport of TREC I thought how well it encompassed all the riding styles and disciplines of good horsemanship. The cross-training needed to participate made better horsemen and women out of all who took part in the sport. There was great emphasis on the horse’s well-being and being well trained to do its job of carrying its rider safely anywhere they wanted to go. It is a sport that is truly an “any rider-any horse“ sport. There are no restrictions on the horse as to breed, color or conformation. Nor are there restrictions on the riders’ size or age. The horse is judged solely on its performance while the rider is judged on their performance and their overall horsemanship.
Page 26
Because the local activities can be ridden at any level of ability or at any age it allows riders of all ages, and horses of all abilities to participate. If a rider wishes to improve or advance in the levels of competition they can develop their knowledge and skills as well as those of their horse to whatever level suits them. The practical knowledge one gains through participation in the sport makes for better horsemen and women. It increases horse and rider confidence while reinforcing actual, usable skills for riding trails and cross

country. I think the motto of USNETO “see the world from the back of a horse” aptly expresses how I would like to spend my hours in the saddle.” USNETO’s national challenge is to raise the profile of the sport by entering a United States Team in the next World TREC Championships being held in Mafra, Portugal, in September 2012. This is a very exciting goal for us and we are currently looking for riders who would like to try out for Team USA – please refer to our website www.usneto. org for more information on what is required and how to register your interest if you think you’d fit the bill. More on Team TREC USA, the riders, and our progress will appear in the summer issue of Elite Equestrian. In the meantime please visit our website www.usneto.org to learn more about the wonderful world of TREC and keep up to date with all that is happening with the US Team.

HIGH NOON’S
Historic and important are two words that only touch on the significance of the items coming to auction at High Noon’s 22nd Annual Western Americana Auction on Saturday, January 28, 2011. From world class art in the form of saddles, spurs, weavings, American Indian artifacts and fine art, this sale will mark a level of richness that is already gaining worldwide media attention. Turning first to the very historically important Pancho Villa saddle, a final reminder of this notorious man and his colorful Villa’s life. Smothered in silver-wrapped threads and boldlydomed conchos, the saddle is estimated to sell for $150,000 to $250,000.

The Yorba Linda Bohlin saddle, the second of many saddles of note, combines both history and beauty into one. Created by Edward H Bohlin, the sterling silver and 3-color gold mounted filigreed saddle belonged to Mabel Yorba, wife of Vicente Yorba, a direct descendant of the illustrious Spanish land grant family that settled Yorba Linda (CA). This saddle carries with it an estimate of $60,000 to $90,000.

Looking to the American Indian category, this highlight will be the circa 1870 Arapaho dress exquisitely beaded in red, green and yellow on a light blue field is estimated to earn $50,000 to $70,000. Equally rich historically, a Lakota/Sioux “belt ax” is estimated at $7,000 to $9,000. This elaborately decorated tomahawk is an exceptional example of the “swagger sticks” American Indian men carried and used for formal situations to proclaim their prowess. And created for a Sioux child in 1890 will be a pictorial beaded vest with two horses and an elk smothered in gold and metal beads, estimated $5,000 to $7,000. The Fine Art Category will bring to the block a watercolor of exception by Edward Borein (California, 1872-1945). Referred to As the Long Drive this signed work surpasses the average Borein in not only content but scope. It truly reflects Borein’s statement “I will leave only an accurate picture of the West, nothing else but that.” This painting is estimated at $60,000 to $80,000. Representing the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) will be Mexican Market Scene, a signed oil on board by Dave Powell (American, b.1954) expected to earn $15,000 to $20,000. The bits, spurs and boots to be offered come from the finest makers. A fabulous double maker-marked J Tapia silver mounted California bit features Jesus M Tapia’s signature engraving and trademark tendrils. This bit is estimated at $15,000 to $20,000.

In the spur category, a highlight will be Montie Montana’s personal spurs created for him by Edward H Bohlin. These double mounted maker-marked parade spurs feature Bohlin’s trademark cookie-cutter rowels and have appeared in numerous photographs of Montie Montana. These important spurs are expected to earn $10,000 to $15,000. And finally for a bit of Hollywood! It’s Montie Montana again that will be a headliner with his grey pinstriped circa 1950 Nudie’s shirt and butterfly boots with Cuban heels and Montie’s brand on the shaft. This cool lot can be yours for about $1,000 to $1,500. For those who have read popular adventure novels by emotionally intense and adventurous Zane Gray (1872-1939) such as Riders of the Purple Sage (1912), High Noon is proud offer his personal N Porter (Phoenix) saddle, fully carved, with his name inscribed prominently on the rear of cantle. This bit of history is estimated at $3000 to $4000. The 22nd Annual High Noon Western Americana Weekend Event will be held January 28 and 29, 2012 at the Mesa Convention Center in Mesa, AZ. The important High Noon Western Americana Auction will begin at 5pm Saturday, January 28th, when the final Pancho Villa saddle as well as over 300 lots of important Western Americana art, artifacts and historic property will be offered. Preview for this event will be Thursday and Friday, January 26th and 27th or by private appointment prior to the sale.

Holiday Travel Tree Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori there is one tree for which calendar dates just don’t matter. It is the tree that can bring interest and beauty to your home and spark conversations with friends all year long. I call it the
Travel Tree.
M
ost of us tend to put up our holiday trees sometime after Thanksgiving or during the first week of December. While I have some friends who install the almighty arbor earlier than mid November (seriously!) and those who keep the halls decked right though Super Bowl Sunday (unbelievable!),
As a world traveler, antiques and collectibles expert, home design maven, I like to suggest new ideas and share design projects. I admit the idea of the travel tree derived from a TV producer with whom I worked for years. She would ask her friends and family to bring an ornament home from their travels. She would hang these holiday ornaments on her tree, but my version of the travel tree has little to do with the holidays and more to do with finding one space to feature all of those small scale souvenirs. What’s more, you don’t have to take the tree down or be at the mercy of the holiday calendar. The Travel Tree lends interesting display options to your home’s decor, but it will also remind you of all the places you’ve visited. Many of us travel for work

Many of these trees relate to activities like horseback riding, scuba, etc. Many of us collect decorative souvenirs while on vacation or business trips. The “tree” form is just a catch-all form for the placement of the small objects and travel collectibles. It can be an actual tree, artificial form of a tree, or made of other materials. Why not display these little mementos together and enjoy the memories they spark all year long? It is easy to get the ticket stubs laminated or tie a ribbon to one of those inexpensive tourist souvenirs or keychain items and hang them on your travel tree. My connection
to horses seemed somewhat unlikely as I was raised in an unhorsy family located in NYC; but I was born a “horse lover”. At the age of nineteen I had the opportunity to spend a month with a friend of my mother’s in England. This friend also loved horses and together we set out in pursuit. One of our outings took us to the Fulmer Riding School where Robert Hall was training. That was my first look at dressage and I’ve been hooked ever since. I was also born an “art lover”, a subject more familiar to my family and very much encouraged. As a teenager I worked as an apprentice to a local sculptor and went on to earn a BFA from Boston University. Many years later I bought my first

horse with money earned from the sale of an abstract marble carving I had created as an art student. Equine art was a natural step for me. I can remember friends and family asking “when will you sculpt a horse?” One day my background in art and my love of dressage merged. It all started with an idea I had while riding. The action of the rein going through the body of the horse became a recognizable feeling. I saw what would become my first bronze sculpture, Thrusting Power. Lines of energy went through horse and rider, the thrilling feeling of controlled power was evident, two became one in motion. The

WHEN AND WHERE SHOULD I RETIRE MY HORSE? Part 1
A
s the horse approaches “senior hood” the decision to retire is not only a dose of reality for the owner but additionally forces a very important pathway of choices for both owner and horse. There is no distinct equine golden age. Each horse is different and carries its own specific challenges. The big questions are when and where should I retire my horse, my companion.
If over the years the horse and rider have formed an emotional bond, the choices become fewer and harder to choose. Selling the horse as a lesson horse potential, companion horse or to auction most likely will not be acceptable. Since the horse will most likely remain with the owner, then the choices become more complex. Part 1 of this 2 part series will discuss when to retire and what should be considered when retiring at home. Part 2 of the series will give guidelines as to what to look for when considering moving your horse to an off site equine retirement facility. WHEN TO RETIRE Below are a few of the guidelines on which to base your decisions. • Is your horse still able to be ridden? If so, then is it possible to alter your activities from a high level activity such as showing or competitive trail riding to just a simple leisurely short trail ride or a few trots around the field?

Equine Health In most cases, you do not have to go from active to inactive unless there has been some sort of non-repairable injury. • If you still want to be in the competitive arena, can you afford to have two horses? One would be retired and the other becomes your competitive partner. Retirement can go on for many years and as in any older animal (just like humans) disease conditions and illness becomes an ever-increasing probability. • What are the consequences (e.g. pain and/or discomfort) to the horse after riding? Does a workout worsen any ongoing conditions placing the horse in predictable pain or distress post exercise? If the answers point toward retirement, then you must decide where. HOME RETIREMENT As in humans, eyesight dims, hearing lessens, legs are more wobbly, chewing becomes progressively more difficult as teeth loosen and/or wear down, arthritis develops, immu-
nity can lessen, as well as negative changes to the physiological systems of the horse (cardiovascular, nervous, etc). Some horses age quicker than others but inevitably, it will happen. Below are some of the many considerations you will need to make. • Are you prepared to “senior-proof” your facility. This means clear away any and all obstacles that your horse may not see clearly. Keep the routine predictable as well as the surroundings. This means initially at set-up as well as routine inspections. New surprises and dim vision yield negative outcomes. • Keep the fences in good repair and clearly visible. Trim weeds and brush so as to not obscure the boundaries. Thick tape or rails are seen better than thin wire.

Can you adapt your life style accordingly? • Ask your vet for assistance in a senior feeding and worming program. Senior feeds are different amongst the brands and many are geared toward various senior conditions. Additionally, ask your veterinarian if a blood chemistry workup would be beneficial. Early detection of disease conditions can make a world of difference and prevent problems down the road. • Finally, can you emotionally handle your equine companion becoming older and frailer and can you face the eventual decision of euthanasia, if required. This will be one of the hardest decisions you will ever make.
If this sounds similar to running a nursing home for human senior citizens, be assured there are many similarities. Old age has no species boundaries. However, it can be a very fulfilling experience as well as a wonderful continuation of your devotion to your equine companion. Think it all through before you make that decision. Part 2 will discuss how to choose an off site retirement facility.

What’s New NEW WINTER HORSE CARE PRODUCT PROTECTS HORSES FROM COLD-BIT DANGERS Hampstead, New Hampshire, USA: A revolutionary bit accessory has been created that protects horses from the pain and discomfort caused by freezing cold bits. Bit Blanket, Inc., a New Hampshire-based company has introduced an innovative new product, an electric bit warmer, that solves a problem resulting from chilly temperatures: the fact that equine bits can become so cold in the fall and winter months that horses often experience pain, discomfort, and soft tissue damage when these cold pieces of metal are put in their mouths. With the new Bit Blanket, caring and compassionate horse enthusiasts can quickly and conveniently warm their horses’ bits to a temperature compatible with a horse’s normal body temperature. Why should riders consider using a Bit Blanket? Because it’s not only ingenious but it preserves your horse’s mouth. “Having grown up in New Hampshire and riding horses for most of my life, I always felt awful when I would have to stick that cold bit in my horse’s mouth in the winter. I tried so many different ways to warm it up before putting it in her mouth, like rubbing it in my hands, putting it under my armpit, dunking it in hot water, things like that; but none of these methods

were very effective” said Jamie Sturgess, the inventor of Bit Blanket. Sturgess also found that it numbed her horse’s mouth so much that it resulted in less sensitivity to light bit pressure at the start of each ride. With necessity serving as the mother of invention, Sturgess came up with a simple, convenient, and easy to use device.
Do you have a drinking problem? From weather, to traveling, to illness, there are many reasons horses will stop drinking enough, and put their health at risk. But there is only one proven solution: Horse Quencher. Visit us at www.horsequencher.com or call 1-888-QUENCHS (783-6247).

Stays on GREAT while grazing and drinking!! The bit warmers plug into any standard outlet and run on only 4 watts of energy, so they cost only pennies a month to operate and are extraordinarily convenient. KAWELL INTRODUCES AN
INNOVATIVE NEW HORSESHOE Kawell is proud to introduce an innovative new horseshoe composed of a unique copper alloy.
Kawell has been producing horse products throughout Latin America and Europe. Established in 1986 as a result of vested interest in applying copper’s intrinsic values to less common environments, Kawell set out to produce products which would improve the quality of life for horses. Working with the Center for Research, Development, and Innovation of Structures and Materials (IDIEM a branch of the University of Chile), Kawell’s intent was to find a metal which would reduce the repetitive impact of the ground on the hoof of the horse while increasing the durability of the metal. The Kawell horseshoe differentiates itself not only in its metallurgic properties, but in the benefits to the horse through its use of the copper alloy, both as a preventive measure as well as therapeutic application.
addition, copper acts as a natural fungicide and bactericide preemptively inhibiting 99% of infections such as thrush. The copper alloy extends the life of the horseshoe by three times the regular amount under normal usage conditions. Additionally, the shoe is 100% recyclable, which makes it the first “green” horseshoe on the market. For more information visit us at www.kawell.cl and read the research and different case studies or request them and see what has made this product so innovative.
Recently Kawell has developed a hoof paste based on the same copper salts that helps to moisturize, protect and regenerate the hoof of the horse through topical application. We have achieved this through The final product is designed for horses used years of design and product testing to help for recreational purposes, as well as those bring the best product possible to the conused in competition. Kawell’s research has sumer market. The product is most effective shown that copper alloys are able to rewhen used to treat some of the more comduce the vibratory impact of the hoof falling mon and harmful issues that arise in equine on the ground and reducing the impact on care such as cracking in the hooves and the rest of the leg by an average of 8.53% infection. After enjoying considerable success in Latin America and Europe, our product line is now available in the U.S. Most recently Kawell has begun the sponsorship of Raimundo Undurraga, to compete in endurance races on behalf of the company worldwide. We are incredibly proud to be sponsoring him and look forward to a long and wish him the best in his upcoming competitions. Raimundo is an architect andlives in Chile, Santiago. Horses Help Juvenile Detainees An Equine Assisted Learning Program designed to help the juvenile detainees at the Morris County, NJ Juvenile Detention Center learn more about themselves is underway. The horses are used to assist the juveniles in their personal growth and life skill learning. The horses belong to the deputy director of the Center, Chief Tony Maglio, an accomplished horseman and trainer, who is conducting the program for the second year in a row at no expense to the county. A horse shoeing demonstration was the start up of the program this year. Here, Jamie Maglio with horse Ticket, and Chief Maglio, right, observe as Farrier Wayne Smith sizes a shoe for Ticket. powerful social animals who communicate with each other through body language and voice.”
The horses have a featured role, rather, in an Equine Assisted Learning Program designed to help juvenile detainees at the Morris Township facility to learn more about themselves. The facility is the detention center not only for Morris County, but also for Warren, Sussex and Hunterdon Counties.
“A key to the program is that each horse, like people, has its own distinctive personality,” Maglio said.
“It is a form of experience-based learning in which horses are used to assist in the personal growth and life skill learning of the Juvenile Detention Center residents,” said Mary Jo Buchanan, director of the county’s Department of Human Services. “The youngsters learn about themselves and others by engaging in activities with horses and then processing the feelings, behaviors, and response patterns that emerge.” The deputy director of the Juvenile Center, Chief Tony Maglio, an accomplished horseman and trainer, said “Horses are large and Page 78
“When you are trying to get a horse to follow a command, what works for one horse may not work with another,” explained Maglio. “The youths may have to adjust their approach to each horse, leading then to a discussion about how they may need to adjust their approach to other life situations as well. It fosters creative problem solving, healthy communication, cooperation, and the development of leadership, conflict resolution, and management skills,” said Maglio. “Because horses are animals of prey, they are keenly aware of their environment and non-verbal aspects of communication,” Maglio continued.

Maybe if I approach people more calmly they will listen to what I have to say.” A 16 year-old, in his evaluation, wrote, “Horses, like people, require patience.” Another resident remarked, “You don’t need to force people to do things. If you’re calm and they understand what you want, they will probably do what you ask.” Maglio’s equine assisted learning program is an added program designed to help the detainees make good choices when they leave the center, build their self confidence, and improve their communication skills. Chief Tony Maglio, a Marine Corps veteran who has been at the center since 1998, conducts the program with his own horses, and at no expense to the county. He noted this is not a riding program, with all of the activities taking place on the ground. He hauls his horses to the county facilities from his Evergreen Acres Training Stable in Long Valley, NJ. Maglio is involved in similar programs outside the Juvenile Center involving families, corporate teams, and the military. Tony Maglio, Patrick DeFranza, Wayne Smith, Ticket, and Jamie Maglio start up the 2nd Annual Equine Assisted Learning Program for residents at the Morris County Juvenile Facility at no expense to the county with a horse shoeing demonstration. As the program continues residents will have “hands on” opportunities to approach, halter, and lead horses through obstacle courses at a walk and jog.

Are you up for the challenge?

The challenge I speak of is change in the life of a youth. If we can get horsepeople from every corner of the globe to participate, in one year, we will have touched the lives of
1,000,000
YOUNG PEOPLE
All horse lovers know the peace that comes from being around a horse. You who work hands-on with horses get to experience the quiet joy every day--how blessed are you! Young people who hear the call of the horse yearn to be with them all the time. But they may not know that it’s possible to forge a career out of their passion, using their God-given talents. I’m an Alumna of Mount Holyoke College--a prominent women’s school in the U.S.--and our equestrian team is usually #1 in the country. Mount Holyoke equestriennes are among the best in the world. But I’ve had many conversations over the past eight years, with Alumnae who rode while in college--and not a one of them dreamed that she could have taken that passion for her horse into her career life after graduation. That doesn’t even make sense to me: how can the world’s oldest college for women--an institution that offers a brilliant education--not inform its students who ride horses, that working with horses after graduation is an option? But it’s true: too often, young people assume that their passion for the equine is an extra-curricular activity. No one guides them toward equine-themed vocations, and so they have no clue that they can spend the rest of their lives loving their jobs. On the flip side of that coin exist the children who’ve never even met a horse, but for whom the horse can be a source of healing and unexpected acceptance. So many children and teenagers, in so many circumstances live marginal lives, with no access to horses. Many are disenfranchised, rejected by their families or society. Without a hand to show them the way out of a potentially dangerous lifestyle, too many of these young lives can fall between the cracks, get lost in society. Not just American society--surely every culture, in every country, has these lost boys and girls. Entirely too many of those dear souls will end up in prison, or dead, because of unwise choices. Too many of them will go from being lost boys and girls, sweet young children--to becoming hated and feared drug dealers, prostitutes with no hope or gang members who join because the gang is the only community that made them feel accepted. Both of these groups of young people--those who already love horses, but are unaware of career choices--and those who are living on the edge, with no seeming way out--can be fulfilled, dare I say, saved--by the mighty equine. This is where you and I come in, and the Million Mare--and Male--March Challenge. I started the challenge on October 17, 2011. One year from that day, we will end the Challenge. The Challenge is this, and it’s so easy: share your passion with just one youth or child, in the next year. Whether you A. share your passion, your vocation or your horse with a youth who already loves horses, but has no idea that she or he can have a joyous career working with horses, or B. with a child from a rotten life situation who desperately needs the acceptance that only a horse can offeryou will have helped shape a young life. This Challenge is issued to people who work with all breeds of horse, all disciplines, all over planet Earth. I’m not asking you to take someone under your wing, to become a foster brother or sister to them. The relationship need be only a one-experience moment. All I’m asking is that you take whatever opportunity presents itself--or that you seek out an opportunity--to help just one young person find her or his vocation, working with horses or to connect a child’s hand and eyes with a horse, maybe for the first time. That mutual sniff may be all a child needs to realize that she or he is not alone in the world, and there are gentle beings, these horses, who want to help them heal. Imagine being the first person to show the possibilities to that child! The Million Mare--and Male--March Challenge is on. One year to reach 1,000,000 young spirits. Are you with me? If so, please email me at the special email address I established just for the Challenge:

inner city youth and horses How EAP / EAL is Helping NYC/NJ Teens Find Their Center
Some might say it is not the most common or likely match…joining up inner city youth from some of the roughest neighborhoods in NYC and NJ and turning them loose into an arena with horses? However there is a strong indication that it just might be the best thing that ever happened for defiant teens. The results produced from the work done in this “join up” show clearly that the outside of a horse is extremely valuable to the inside of a teenager (to borrow the idea from Winston Churchill). Newly formed nonprofit, Spring Reins of Life - Horses, Humans & Healing (SROL) in Hunterdon County, New Jersey is teaming up with Misunderstood Youth Development Center (a nonprofit in Queens and Brooklyn NY that works with teenage gang members), New City Kids (a nonprofit in Jersey City, NJ established to instill leadership qualities for disadvantaged youth) and Bonnie Brae (a nonprofit residential treatment center for teen boys in Liberty Corner, NJ) to teach wayward youth the core values of respect, responsibility, creative problem solving, cause/effect, compassion, and maybe most importantly the spark of hopes, dreams, and self leadership for their own future through activities and interaction with horses.
refers to an adolescent who struggles with moderate to severe emotional and behavioral disturbances, often leading them into areas which threaten their future such as gang culture, violence, petty / felony crime, substance abuse and incarceration. Regardless of the reasons, the teenager who is emotionally unstable may become a danger to themselves and to others. Animal Assisted Therapy is a potent treatment modality suited for at risk or disadvantaged youth. Studies have demonstrated that spending time with a domesticated animal can reduce levels of stress and hyper-arousal, and structured therapeutic activities which are focused and intentional with an animal produce marked positive results. Horses are particularly effective as their size and power amplify metaphorical learning, highlight action and consequences and easily teach the values of respect and trust.
The recent past has witnessed a steady Erin Reyhan, a social worker and Clinical Coincrease of troubled adolescents interfacing ordinator of Bonnie Brae Residential Center with the law. The phrase “at risk youth” enthusiastically supports this type of interPage 82

intervention. “Bonnie Brae became interested in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy as it is an experiential form of therapy with successful results in the adolescent population. It is sometimes difficult to engage adolescents in traditional ‘talk therapy,’ so we are interested in EAP (equine assisted therapy) as this form of therapy often lends itself to discussion based on experience. During our session at Spring Reins of Life, our guys remained engaged in therapy for over two hours and were able to more easily discuss their own issues when the activities with the horses were completed.”

I loved those ‘a-ha’ moments.” One of the teen participants commented after completing her first day program session “It was amazing, I would have never expected that all to happen. The ninth Annual Arabian and Half-Arabian Reining Horse Futurities run February 16 through 26, 2012 at West World of Scottsdale during the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Founded in 1998, the Arabian Reining Horse Association promotes the natural athletic abilities and versatility of the Arabians and Half Arabian horses. This year some $175,000 in prize monies, plus saddles, trophies and buckles, await Futurity winners. Reining competitions are all about action, not only on the part of horses and riders, but with a lot of vocal support from the audience. Competitors in each class ride specific patterns and are judged by their ability to ride that pattern as perfectly as possible. The horses are highly responsive to rider queues making this sport both a mental and physical challenge for riders as well as an exciting spectator event.

So to say it’s my favorite, is saying a lot.” “Our sport appeals to just about everyone,” says Association president Eleanor Hamilton of Eleanor’s Arabian Farm in Rogers, MN. “Pros, non-pros, young horses, mature horses – we are extremely proud to have included something for all. And we encourage all of our Reining friends from AQHA to donate breeding from their top reining stallions to our Futurity auction. This is great opportunity to introduce your breeding program to our membership as the Half Arabian – Quarter Horse cross continues to excel in reining and more people are focusing on the special qualities of this cross.”

empathy these kids can demonstrate, it would bring tears to your eyes.” The skills the participants learn and experience with the horses are brought outside the ring where therapists assist them in applying them to real life. Equine Assisted Learning and Psychotherapy is an intervention that works. Participants who historically avoid seeking the help needed to address problems they face in life due to the stigma often attached to mental health counseling benefit perhaps the most from equine therapy. Depending on one’s needs, activities are designed to promote the acquisition of life skills or the introspection necessary to gain insight on emotions struggles one may be experiencing. It is completed in an atmosphere which does not “feel like therapy”, thereby allowing intervention without inhibition or hesitation. Terry De Mendonca, the Executive Director of The Misunderstood Youth Development Center notes, “I had never been to an animal farm or realized the effects it would have on humans. After attending the equestrian therapy program workshops with Spring Reins of Life, I have developed a new found respect for animals as they relate to the human emotions and the human service industry. The youth in my program also left with a new appreciation for horses and more significantly, life in general. We have seen positive changes since adding EAP into our program and we are hoping to make visits more frequently to the horses as more funding becomes available” The Executive Director and Co-founder of Spring Reins of Life, MaryEllen Salamone commented, “I am really proud of the work our team does here at Spring Reins of Life. We have mental health professionals and Page 86
equine specialists who really know how to interact with the groups who attend our workshops. And we have horses who make all the difference. It is a relatively new form of animal assisted therapy, but one that holds tremendous promise. I can’t wait to see the program grow.” Spring Reins of Life already enjoys a steady at-risk youth program and is expanding to include services for bereaved children and our military. “Funding is always an issue.” adds Salamone, “our program is different from conventional therapy. It is often difficult to explain to people how and why it works. Studies demonstrate it does, but all one has to do is come see it in action and it proves itself.” S. Evans, a 19 year old ex-gang youth from Queens, NY who recently attended a workshop thinks so too. “I wasn’t interested in going the farm at first, I thought it would be hard to bond with a horse, but I learned that horses are easy to bond with and they are fun – and they also taught me that every action gets a reaction with the horse, if you act nice [then] the horse acts nice”
Sounds just like life. What experiences have been formative ones in Linda’s life? What has permitted her to have such far-reaching impact on so many people and animals? She learned a great deal from Metheral, but was always apprehensive about her methods of starting her horses, although they were typical for the time: teach the horse to submit. That’s why, she believes, “I won more than my fair share.” The horses knew they could trust her. And, they were made to feel comfortable, a respected partner. It is this philosophy that has followed Linda throughout her life with horses and with other animals. Respect, love, humanity.
But, Linda was just a child and couldn’t question Metheral’s methods. One day, an old cavalry man stopped her after watching her ride. He offered her a book about starting horses in a new way – by ground driving and slowly introducing a saddle. She inhaled that book and took it back to her barn at home to experiment with a 2 ½ year old mare that had never been ridden. It worked like a charm. She was able to mount her and ride off with never a fearful gesture on the part of the horse. It changed Linda’s whole world view about working with horses.
At age 20, she met and married Went Tellington, who was an American engineer living in Canada. Went was 20 years older, a cavalry man, intelligent, well read, and intense. Linda felt cowed by the education, charm, and knowledge of Went and his erudite friends. But, she learned a great deal from him. Although she didn’t go through a traditional educational route, she educated herself via Went’s teachings, his extensive personal library and writing classes that he taught. When they moved to California, she attended night school at UCLA.

barn mice Social Media For Equestrians
Four years ago, Canadian dressage rider, Barbara Fogler, thought it would be a great idea to connect horse enthusiasts around the world in an online community where people from every background could make friends and share their horsey experiences. She wanted a name that would immediately connect her visitors and called the community Barnmice, because “no matter where in the world you ride, there they are!”
With Barnmice, Barbara found a way to bring together her favorite aspects of Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Blogger within an online home-awayfrom-home that was welcoming and easy to navigate. The community started with a handful of members from a small barn north of Toronto and, in a short time, grew into a world-wide phenomenon - a hit with riders of every background, from beginners to Olympic medallists.
