Carl Hester MBE
Training A Young Dressage Horse
Carl Hester MBE is one of Britain’s most successful dressage riders. He is an Olympic gold medallist and multi-medallist at European and world championships. Here Carl Hester gives us tips in how to get those essential basics in place with a young horse.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A DRESSAGE HORSE
Some riders can be taken in by a big trot, but Carl says that’s not hugely important in a young horse. “You can train the trot to become expressive so always look for a horse with a great walk and canter as these paces can be harder to improve. The walk should have a decent overtrack (where the hind hoof lands in front of the footprint left by the foreleg) and in the canter, look for a horse that steps well underneath his body with a quality three beat (50% of a Grand Prix test is done in canter).”
Of course, temperament is the most important thing of all and while Carl likes his horses to be sharp and forward thinking, they have to be trainable. “You could have the best moving horse in the world, but if they have the wrong brain for dressage you could be fighting a losing battle,” Carl explained.
“I tend to turn the sharper ones out in the paddock 24/7. It definitely helps them to stay calmer in their work and I believe it makes them stronger, too. I always remember what my vet once told me: ‘If you want to keep a horse sound, keep it moving’.”
Buying a young horse is always a bit of a lottery and, as Carl admits, he had no idea that Valegro and Uthopia would be future gold medallists when he first saw them. “They were just lovely young horses and we didn’t pay a lot of money for them. We don’t have rich owners spending a fortune on horses for us, but what we do have is a tried and tested training system that works and helps to produce superstars of the future.”
A TYPICAL YOUNG HORSE TRAINING SESSION
Carl likes to keep young horses’ training sessions short, but there are lots of important considerations to make when schooling a youngster.
• STRAIGHTNESS. If you have mirrors, it can help you to see whether your horse is straight or not, but an experienced friend on the ground is helpful if mirrors aren’t present. “Basically, you want to see that the horse’s head is in front of the chest and that the hind footprints are following the
tracks of the forefeet, whether you’re working on a circle or in a straight line. Movements such as leg-yield and shoulder-fore are good straightening exercises, which we use a lot with the young horses.”
• TRANSITIONS. “I am a firm believer in the use of plenty of transitions in my training. Not only do they teach the horse to take more weight onto the hindleg, but they improve obedience and suppleness, too.”
• CHANGING THE OUTLINE. “As a dressage rider, you should be able to stretch the horse’s head and neck down at any point during a schooling session. You want the horse to carry itself, rather than relying on the rider’s hands for support and if you can do this, you know you’re getting it right.

We tend to pick the horses up for a few minutes and then allow them to stretch again, so that they get used to working in a more uphill frame and then stretch again. As they become stronger, they will become more able to maintain a correct uphill outline for longer, but in the early days stretching is the most important thing of all.”
• REPETITION. “Like humans, horses learn from repetition, so riders need to repeat exercises over and over until the horse learns how to do it. When I start teaching a horse flying changes, I tend to treat them a bit like a show jumper and just quietly pop from one leg to the other until they understand the concept. The last thing you want to do is upset the horse into thinking that flying changes are something to worry about.”
• KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET. “Young horses only need to do about 20 minutes in the school. They need time to mature physically and mentally, so we tend to keep sessions short until they are stronger. That’s the best way to keep a horse sound through its career and you’ll find your horse is much happier as you train up the levels, too. Also, try to finish on a good note, so if you have had some really good work after 15 minutes then finish there and then. If it takes a bit longer one day, then that’s how it is. You can’t stick to an exact time limit with horses.”
In summary, Carl’s advice is to keep dressage training simple. “Don’t over complicate things and try to make your training black and white, so that the horse understands what you are asking. Here are a few management tips that may also help with your young horses.
• Turn them out as much as possible – 24/7 if possible – and aim to ride when they come in, rather than before you turn them out if you are stabling for periods of the day or night.
• Don’t carry a whip. “Generally we work without a whip with our horses at home. The only me we use one is when we are teaching the horse piaffe or passage. At the end of the day, you’re not allowed to carry a whip in championships, so it’s good to get the horse used to working without one right from the start.”
• Be careful not to put yourself in a dangerous situaon with a young horse. If you have to lunge first, then do. Train them carefully and considerately and make everything black and white as this makes horses easier to train and that way they will know where they stand.
• Consider carefully what you feed a sharp horse and seek advice from a nutrionist or feed helpline if in any doubt.
• Ensure that your horse’s tack and equipment is comfortable so that you don’t give your ‘hot’ horse any excuses to misbehave. “A good test of whether or not your saddle is comfortable is to ask the horse to stretch. If the back doesn’t li up, then the horse is working against the saddle instead of with it.”
• Invest in your surface. Vets recommend training horses on a variety of foongs to encourage strengthening the so ssues

in the legs. “I put my trust in the world’s finest, synthec training foongs from Marn Collins to give my horses this difference in going. “
MC Ecotrack was the choice for my indoor foong as it offers outstanding stability under foot, for confidence, security and top performance. With its generous wax content, it is ideal for indoor arenas and needs no watering.
• My outdoor arena has a slightly “looser” blend, it has plenty of CLOPF fibers and cushioning, enabling the horse to work into the surface a lile more. It provides stability underfoot, is highly durable and easy to maintain. Ideal for outdoor arena’s as it drains easily and is resistant to freezing enabling the horses to be worked all year round.
“I love these foongs. They rode perfectly from day one and all my horses seem to have an extra spring in their step! The Marn Collins Team are highly professional, the quality of workmanship and the surfaces is exemplary. I would recommend them to anyone who wants the best training surfaces for their horses, they are worth every penny.”

Why Can’t I Get My
Heels Down
CASE STUDY: HEELS DOWN ???
When I was a youth rider, it all came so naturally. Position was never an issue; balance was easy, and I could sail over fences as tall as they were wide in perfect equitation. But 40 years later after rekindling my love of riding, I was struggling to do the most basic thing: stretch my legs down into my heels. Years of injury, surgery and life had taken a toll and I was searching for help to regain just some of the effortless posture I once had. I was looking for the Holy Grail…searching through new findings in biomechanics and taking lessons, reading books, trying new therapies including three biomechanics instructors, a session with the physical therapist to Team USA’s Para Olympic team, clinics on balanced riding and remyelination of motor pathways to change muscle memory, Pilates instruction, but to no avail. I just couldn’t put it into practice. I could not get my body to do what I wanted it to in the saddle.
A friend suggested I read Mary Wanless, and this introduced me to the concept of fascia and how the human fascia could influence the equine fascia. Mary’s book, “The New Anatomy of Rider Connection” describes the harmony horse and rider can achieve by unlocking the fascia. I envisioned what was correct but could not will my position to comply. Every time I rode and looked in the mirrors, I was collapsing my right side and crunching my legs up, posting off my toes with my heels up, no matter how much I thought I was doing the opposite.
I was lamenting with a friend about the futility of my endeavors, and she gave me the phone number for Serenity Healing Hands and Lydia Serrano.
I had never had a massage or been to a chiropractor and was nervous and skeptical. The first visit with Lydia, she put me at ease, explaining the role the fascia plays, how it exerts thousands of pounds of pressure and how our bodies could stand erect even without bones because of the fascia. She explained how surgeries, injuries, tension, and dehydration cause the fascia to tighten and hold an unrelenting grip on the muscular system. Unless we get the fascia to release, the muscles are held bound. It all made sense. At the end of that first session, I could feel my tight areas release and a knot I had at the base of my skull disappeared. I thought that knot was part of my neck bones because I could not remember a time that I did not have that knot, but Lydia got it to release in the first session! I signed up for Lydia’s 8 session jump start program where Lydia taught me home methods to effect fascial release combined with two weekly massage sessions where Lydia focused on problem areas. The first jump start session, Lydia realized the space between my right rib cage and hip was shorter than the left side. I realized I would sit on the couch each night with my legs up under me on the right side, essentially shortening my own body on the right. This explained my tendency to collapse my right side and
draw the right leg up more than the left leg when in the saddle. After three sessions focusing on this problem area and some therapy suggestions for me to try at home, I noticed that my riding was more balanced, and I was able to stretch my torso up and use my core more effectively and to stretch into my lower leg and heels evenly. Because I was no longer crunching up my right side, my horse became more straight and less hollow to the right. By the last week of the jump start, we were able to work on the deeper tissue and my riding just continued to improve. When my instructor would tell me to do a movement, my horse was responding more easily, which told me I was using my body appropriately, for the first time in years. And when I glance in the mirror, my heels are better, and I am not gripping as badly with my thigh and knees. Myofascial release and my work with Lydia at Serenity Healing Hands has become as integral to my riding as my lessons. I recommend Serenity Healing Hands to everyone I know. After all, we can all benefit from The Holy Grail!
Tara Tobon grew up riding hunt seat before switching to Dressage in her mid 20’s. She gave that up 30 years ago when she met husband, Carlos, who was a professional Paso Fino trainer, judge and clinician. Carlos is now a successful realtor with Keller Williams Cornerstone Realty, and Tara helps him with his Ocala Horse and Home, doing marketing and contract prep. She returned to Dressage three years ago, and with her mare, Lenore, was the 2022 Region 3 Adult Amateur Champion at Training level and the 2022 USDF KWPN Reserve Champion Adult Amateur at Training level.

Myofascial Release Massage Therapy
You Don’t Have To Live With Pain
“I give Lydia huge credit for getting my mobility back after major shoulder surgery and 3 months of healing. Massages with Lydia keep me riding.”
Lydia experienced the power of myofascial release therapy firsthand after a fall down a flight of concrete steps. She did myofascial releases on herself, starting with the topmost muscle layer and working deeper as the tissues released.
The body has 6 to 10 times more fascia than muscle fibers. Fascia coats all fibers, including nerves. Changing muscle memory by releasing the fascia releases the toxins, which contribute to making you sore.
“I learned firsthand that you don’t have to live with pain.”
