From The President’s Desk. Whether this is your first time joining us or you’re a returning friend, greetings and welcome to Tinicum Park Polo Club! We hope you enjoy a fantastic afternoon with us in our little slice of heaven here in Bucks County as you watch some incredible playing in our polo matches. At half time, please join us with the traditional divot stomping (those of legal age may also partake in a complimentary champagne toast), or take few swings at a polo ball off Charlie Chukker. Please feel free to stroll down to the horse trailer area either before the game or at half time and meet the players. Our players possess a wealth of polo knowledge and experience and most love to talk about the game. While you’re there make sure to visit with some of the horses. You will find that polo ponies are the most photogenic of animals so be prepared with your camera. I hope you will join us every Saturday (except July 4th) during the summer. This year we will be presenting 5 USPA sanction tournaments, a fund raising game to benefit Work to Ride, and special events including Philadelphia Style Magazine, Wine & Polo, The British Festival, and many more. This year we are excited to be presenting an International Day in June where the best of our Tinicum Park Polo players will take on a formidable Egyptian Team. Many thanks to all of those who help make our club so successful. Special thanks go to our Sponsors, Program Advertisers, members , committees, volunteers, spectators and fans. Additionally, we are grateful to the Bucks County Park System for providing us with such a splendid facility. I hope you have a chance to swing over and meet me (second Social Member tent to the left of the announcer’s stand) or the rest of our membership along the side lines or at the trailers and that you enjoy your time with our group of friendly polo enthusiasts. Again, welcome and have a fantastic day! Henry Ihling Club President

Position One
Position Two
Position Three
Position Four
The Number One position requires a player with the accuracy and confidence to score. This is his offensive job. He must have fast, steady horses in order to beat the opposing Number Four to the ball and stroke it into the goal. He must be optimistic and anticipate the forward passes, as well as know when to cover the Number Four, timing his ride-offs so his teammates can come through with the ball.
This player is often called the “sparkplug” of the team. As an attacker, he is the most aggressive offensive player on the team. He must have fast and fit horses and think quickly in order to set up the scoring opportunities.Communication with his Number Three is important; the two of them are the driving force behind the plays. The Number Two marks the opposing Number Three and keeps him from turning the ball.
The quarterback of the team and the most versatile, this offensive and defensive player must act quickly, yet with a cool head, always thinking a play ahead. As a play maker, his responsibilities are to turn the opponent’s attack around and direct his team’s offensive drive with well placed passes. The Number Three accepts the ride offs so his horse should be strong, stop easily, and rein well. The Number Three is usually the field captain as far as team strategy goes.
As back, this position requires a deliberate approach, yet leaves no margin for error. He must play his position and keep himself between the goal and the attacking Number One. The Number Four should always back the ball at an angle so his teammates can more easily pick it up. This is often called the “thinking man’s position”. He and his horses should be strong and steady.

Polo originated in Asia more than 2,000 years ago.
It may have descended from buzkashi – the national sport of Afghanistan, a rough-and-tumble horseback sport. Some believe that the son of the last Persian emperor introduced polo to China around 670 B.C. The name of the game may well come from the word “pholo” meaning ‘ball’ or ‘ballgame’ in the Balti language of Tibet. According to scholars, including the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., the game traveled along the “Silk Road” from China to the rest of the world. “Let other people play other things – the king of game is still the game of kings”. This verse is inscribed on a stone tablet at a polo ground north of Kashmir near this fabled trade route. Page 20
The modern sport of polo had its beginnings in the 1860s in Punjab, India, when British officers took up the game of polo that they had seen played by local horsemen. The game was introduced in England in 1869 and in America by 1876. English and Irish engineers introduced the game to Argentina, where the first official game was held in 1875. The United States Polo Association was established in 1890 to coordinate games, standardize rules and establish handicaps. Polo is now played around the world in over 75 countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. In 1998, the Federation of International Polo was established.
