What is your design philosophy? The clothes we make speak for themselves. Every time we design a bridal dress we make sure that it represents the bride that will wear the dress. When the bride walks in to our studio, we ask her questions about herself and her big day and then customize the dress; thereby remaining true to our design philosophy.
When and how was Lajwanti launched? Lajwanti was launched in 1996. The reason behind the launch was actually very personal. When I was getting married, I found a huge gap in the market for brides. Everything was too typical and run of the mill, so I ended up designing and making my own bridal and that’s when the brand was launched.
With so many new designers rising on the fashion scene, how do you maintain your niche in the market? Since we are a veteran brand, we made our customer base a long time ago. We have stayed true to the intricacy of our craft, which is why we gained so much popularity initially. There is hardly anyone in the market doing such “bareek” work. That is why our customers keep coming back for.
What is a regular day like in the life of a fashion designer? Well it varies every day; my day normally begins with a cup of black coffee with a hint of coconut oil in it. This concoction gets me charged for the day and I make my first stop at the production house where I streamline all the production processes, mostly the design and creative process. The second half of my day is mostly spent at the studio
What are some of your inspirations and influences? Inspiration would be Sabyasachi - I love his design ethos, imagery and presentation.

where we deal with our clients.
What has been the biggest challenge in your journey so far? The brand’s greatest strengths has also been the greatest challenge. Nowadays, there are a lot of designers in the market offering a variety of work. From a price point of view, catering to clients with such intricate work has been a real challenge. However, we try our best to accommodate our clients as much as we can. Where do you see you brand going in the next ten years? Of course, with everything in life, fashion must evolve. If we go back a couple of years, the market demand was very different. Now the focus is on more western cuts. So, yes fashion must evolve with the changing demand.

THE DESIGNER’s VISION Afsaneh
SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 | 40
Afsaneh, an traditional wear retail brand with a distinct identity and cultural elements, recently opened its doors to fashion enthusiasts. The stores house a vast variety of pretwear for men and women, trendy accessories, silk scarves, tunics and an unstitched collection which also includes roll fabric collection. The color palette ranges from deep rich tones to lighter colors with delightful prints. Afsaneh is a breath of fresh air in a market saturated with overly done heavy on print lawn.

After what seemed like the longest summer ever, autumnal weather is finally (almost) here and we cannot wait to layer up. If you are like us and love all things cosy yet chic then you need to incorporate these 2018 AW trends into your wardrobe!
ALL THNIGS ANIMAL
SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 | 48
It may have once looked tacky and kitsch but animal print is back and in a big way. Zebra, cheetah, leopard, you name it, there’s a print dedicated to an animal. Gucci recently announced that they would no longer use real fur (yay) with other major luxury design houses following suit which means wearing fur again is on trend too. We have yet to venture into animal print shalwar kameez but we think a zebra print kurta would be totally chic!
CRYSTALS ON EVERYTHING We’ll be the first to admit that we have magpie tendencies and are attracted to anything shiny (except a greasy T-zone) so when we saw that the coolest designers were just into kitsch crystals as us, our fashion choices felt validated. International runways saw sneakers strapped up with giant jewels, crystal hair clips, crystal jewellery, etc. But we’d like to think that Pakistanis have been way ahead of this trend—in true extra AF style, we have been embellishing our outfits with crystals for a long time!
weekend | lifestyle
PLAID
There is tough competition for animal print this year, and it’s in the form of good ol’ plaid. When it comes to checked fabric, you can channel a few different looks. Tartan blouses, preppy plaid suits or even the shirts your average Southern American truckers wear are just some of the trendy ways to wear this trend. Our personal favourites have been the ‘Boss Lady’ suits in every conceivable print by local Lahore designer Studio S by Seher Tareen. Plaid your hearts out, ladies!
PASTEL BLUES
We would have never thought any pastel shade of a colour would be a trend to look out for in the colder months but international runways saw pastel blue dominate collections. Although no written fashion rules say we do this but we usually reserve pastel and blue shades for the summer months well, because, we reach for the cooler shades in the hottest months. Dusky, powdery blues can be used for trouser suits, cosy jumpers and even winter coats. It’s a colour that goes well with every wardrobe staple.
We never thought we’d be saying this but brown is going to be major this coming season. Fendi did the beige and chocolate monogrammed clothes with Chloé following suit with a whole collection in every possible shade of brown. We hate to say it but brown may be the new black. If push comes to shove and we have to make a desi fashion brown statement then the only acceptable way we’ll be wearing the colour is in the form of a saari.

This product is the holy grail of fall beauty buys as our skin tends to get very dry and dehydrated in this season. This serum will ensure that our skin stays smooth and supple.

Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define Concealer
In good weather we don’t mind having a full coverage base as we don’t tend to sweat that much. This concealer hides spots, dark circles and pigmentation. For people who don’t like to apply foundation, this product alone is enough for y’all. Trust me, it’s bomb.

Thanks to SKMCH&RC,
Zahra can now achieve her dream to be a doctor “Watching your child grow through the developmental stages, like learning to sit, crawl, and take the first tottering step is a joyful process for every parent. Butit is shocking to watch your child suddenly seem to ‘grow backwards’ and that was exactly what we experienced with our two year old daughter,” says Zahra’s mother Ms. Najma. Zahra Shafique, 12, from Lahore is the eldest child of Mrs. Shafique. The family lives in urban area of Lahore. “Zahra had been complaining of fever and pain in her legs. Fearing polio, we took her to an orthopedic consultant who prescribed some medicines. Zahra responded well and was once again her active self; walking, climbing and pushing objects as much as her abilities allowed. Soon, however, she regressed into crawling mode. We took her to another orthopedic consultant for a second opinion. Suspecting a blood disorder, he prescribed a series of tests and x-rays, which revealed a diagnosis of blood cancer,”said Mrs. Shafique. Zahra was taken from one hospital to another for treatment, but in vain. Some hospitals lacked equipment while others lacked trained medical staff. It was a very difficult period for Zahra’s parents. Then one doctor advised them to prepare for the worst. “This was truly the most horrific moment of my life. It felt as if my child was slipping out of my grasp and I could do nothing but wait and watch. Fortunately, someone advised us to go to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC). We rushed there and were astonished to see the facilities available as well as the cooperative staff and, in particular, the qualified consultants. Due to Zahra’s rapidly deteriorating condition, an aggressive treatment plan was chalked out with utmost urgency. The medical team remained hopeful throughout and Zahra’s fever finally settled on the twenty-fifth day. Our family had begun its long and trying journey of Zahra’s cancer treatment, marked with both, hopes and fears. We have learned that it is hope which keeps you alive. I made many friends at the Hospital, which now feels like our second home.” Said Mrs. Najma. After nearly three long years, Zahra’s parents were informed that she had fully recovered from blood cancer and did not require any further treatment. The family was thrilled to the core, incredibly happy and grateful to every individual at the Hospital. Not only had their child been cured but that too, absolutely free of cost. “I am and will always remain thankful to Almighty Allah and am indebted to Imran Khan for building this marvelous cancer hospital, where deserving patients are treated on merit.” Today Zahra, who once seemed to be ‘growing backwards,’ is once again growing into a healthy girl. She is a survivor of childhood cancer and a brave little warrior who can now achieve her dream to be a doctor. (As narrated by Ms. Najma Shafique, mother of cancer survivor Zahra Shafique.)
