Dolce & Gabbana Drama D&G found themselves in hot water when ads they aired which were designed to appeal to the Chinese market had completely the opposite affect. The ads caused huge controversy as they played on Chinese stereotypes in an offensive & culturally insensitive way. The situation went from bad to worse when Stefano Gabbana (known for his ill advised social media antics) launched on a racist tirade on Instagram. Fast forward and the huge D&G show in China was cancelled by their government and people even started throwing away and burning their D&G merch in protest! Yikes!

ACCESSORIES TREND REPORT 2018 HAIR BARRETTES

SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 | 48

If you haven’t noticed hair accessories are bigger than they ever before with Chanel’s double c hair clips, butterfly clips, monogrammed clips, crocodile clips all making a comeback on and off runways. Not only are they practical in terms of keeping your hair sticking to your lip gloss but they make a chic statement as far as headwear is concerned.

GLITZY CHANDELIER EARRINGS If you ever thought silver and crystal chandelier earrings looked kitsch, it is time to re-evaluate your taste. Think glamour, sparkly and festive glittering earrings that don’t look anything less than Christmas decorations. The longer the better in our opinion!

STATEMENT SCARVES With it getting colder outside, it’s natural to accessorise your looks with colourful and cheerful statement scarves. Scarves genuinely serve their purpose since they come in chunky and oversized styles so they cover you from the cold whilst making you like you’ve just stepped off the runway.

CHUNKY CUFFS

Dainty bracelets may have graced the runways but they were outnumbered by the chunky cuff when it came to street style. A simple and luxurious molten gold or silver cuff has an artistic and minimalistic feel that can elevate any basic look.

If you missed the fashion memo this year then let us remind you that animal print is back in a big way. The trend is not limited to just one animal either; it is about leopard, zebra, cheat and even tiger print thrown into the mix. Animal print accessories may sound like you’re attention seeking but they will actually take your outfit from 0 to 100 real quick.

CereVe Hydrating Cleanser

If your face feels tight after cleansing then it may be time to ditch your current cleanser. My favorite cleanser from CeraVe deserves serious consideration by anyone with dry-sensitive skin including those who are dealing with rosacea. Gentle and hydrating while still ensuring a deep cleanse, this star product is especially perfect for winter.

4

Clinique Smart Treatment Oil

Oils are a great way to restore moisture in dry or dehydrated skin. This one particularly, has an excellent mix of skinrepairing, rich plant oils and antioxidants. It’s a great option for eliminating dryness and adding a healthy glow, and is even suitable for sensitive skin, including rosacea.

2

RESIST Advanced Smoothing Treatment 10% AHA by Paula’s Choice The blend of glycolic, lactic, malic, and tartaric acids (AHAs) is what makes this serum a superhero product. Alpha hydroxy acids chemically exfoliate your skin. In simple terms? Think of it as gently resurfacing the top layer of your skin over time, consequently evening out tone, improving skin texture and achieving fresh looking skin.

3

Murad City Skin with SPF 50

Murad City Skin can be your perfect choice for a day time moisturizer. It not only hydrates but also has a nice blend of antioxidants which repair dull looking skin, while protecting your face from sun damage. Best of all it doesn’t look white and cakey on the face.

Weekend Scout s Scheherzade Junejo Artist

@scheherezadejunejo

What does art mean to you?

Art opened my mind. It taught me to experience the world in a very different way. For me art was like resocialisation- the more I was exposed to various artists & practices, the more I began to question our perceptions & behaviour. Art gave me the tools to shape the reality & future I wanted for myself. Art is my daily dose of unadulterated joy, passion & purpose.

Who/what is your work influenced by? There are many artists who have inspired me but Caravaggio, Egon Schiele, Rene Magritte, Georgia O’ Keeffe & Andy Warhol have had the greatest impact on me.

december 02, 2018 | 54

What are your inspirations & how are they related to the themes which recur throughout your works?

Physical activities which inspire me are Yoga & Dancing which shows in my work through the body language of the characters I create. I’m also inspired by books, films, documentaries & podcasts. But its mostly the study of social behaviour that inspires me and goes into the concepts behind my paintings. I enjoy studying human pathology and how various experiences shape behaviour. It helps me make sense of the world and people around me.

weekend | Fashion

What was the very first piece you created?

The first piece I created in this series was in August 2009. It happened quite experimentally. I was attempting to create something figurative for my thesis, so I used several photographs of a friend to create the piece titled “Tactile Experiences. This became the starting point for the entire body of work I’ve produced over the last 9 years.

What kind of art do you most identify with, and why?

I think surrealism and pop-art are the closest known styles that my work can identify with. The visual language and concepts that go into my work follow these two art movements closely, because these two movements influenced my work directly when I was an art student. However, I would not define my work as being either surrealistic or pop-art, I would rather call it hyper-realistic and absurd.

Oil on canvas is my preferred medium. There is something about the lustre of oil that I find addictive and riveting. Its a very visually piercing medium compared to others, and creating details with oil paint is a smooth and harmonic process for me as it flows from one tone to another. I find blending other mediums a bit jarring in comparison. All other mediums also have a matte finish which I get bored with quickly.

december 02, 2018 | 55

What medium do you prefer to work with, and why?

weekend | Fashion

Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be, and why? My dream would be to create a piece for Sir David Attenborough. He has deeply inspired me with his natural history programs since my late teens, and I credit him with opening my mind to the wonders that exist around us daily. If it weren’t for him, I would probably never have known the power of imagination or what it takes to be a creator.

Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work?

december 02, 2018 | 56

Where are your artworks available for sale? How should people contact you? I display at several galleries across the country but my work is usually sold through previews. Interested clients usually message me on my facebook page, instagram profile and website. I get their contact details and add them to the list of clients who are waiting to purchase work. When I have an upcoming exhibit I send previews of all available work to this list. From there they can contact the gallery in question and purchase their choice of work

For me a memorable response is usually a critical one. So the best responses I have received are from senior or more experienced artists than myself, who have suggestions as to how the work can improve and what new directions it can take. I tend to remember their responses more clearly over the years because of the impact their vision has on me. My favourite responses though, are usually from viewers who, after seeing my work, rather uncomfortably ask me if I will ever paint landscapes, or still lifes which they can buy for their drawing rooms. I find those responses quite entertaining.

What is your ultimate goal/dream as an artist?

As a feminist and an artist, my dream is to hopefully one day be remembered as a woman who had the courage to question the patriarchy and remove the stigma around the female body. I hope to be remembered as someone who could empower women to find and use their own voice.

How would you describe your pieces?

I would describe them as a blend of beauty and grotesque in one visual. My pieces are intended to attract and repel the viewer at the same time.

The Balkan Peninsula

December 2, 2018 |60

Travel & Cake Fatima Umar

I am a visual artist dividing my time between Istanbul and Lahore. This summer I decided to join a Turkish tou going to the Balkans for Eid r holidays. On our sevenday journey, we travelled through the historic and breathtakingly beautiful countryside of various countries of the former sta of Yugoslavia. We were fiftyte people travelling together on a bus, with me as the sol e Pakistani on the tour. We flew from Istanbul to Ohrid, a ver historical city in Macedoni y which also happens to be a, a UNESCO world heritag site. From Ohrid we drove e straight to Skopje, the cap ital of Macedonia.

Ohrid

Ohrid, the largest city on Lake Ohrid and our last stop on the Balkan tour, is a historical city that once housed 365 churches. The cities and the lake, which are by and large undiscovered by tourists, are UNESCO world heritage sites. The town is famous for the Ohrid pearls and handmade silver filigree jewellery. The main attraction of the region is St. Naum’s monastery where St. Naum is also buried. He was a writer, enlightener and one of the seven apostles, as well as a disciple of Clemet and Methodius and was responsible for the development of the Cyrillic letters. His miracle is that if you put your ear next to his grave, you hear the beating of a heart.

weekend | travel

Belgrade Belgrade was our next destination; the capital and the largest city of Serbia, located at the junction of the Danube and the Sava Rivers. A large billboard with a picture of a female soldier and the caption “we will never forget, placed on a building bombed by NATO forces, was one of the things that caught my attention. Pictures of Nikola Tesla and Vladimir Putin were the most popular images seen at souvenir and gift shops.

Montenegro Blagajtekke In Bosnia we also visited the Blagajtekke, a sufi lodge. The musafirhana and turbe(mausoleum) are tucked into the natural surroundings, being one with the cliff that is the source of the Buna River. This sufi lodge is supposedly the resting place of Sari Saltuk, a 13th century dervish venerated as a saint in the Balkans. According to legend, his body was buried in seven coffins in remote towns in the lands of the infidels and this is one of his alleged tombs.

December 2, 2018 | 61

From Mostar we made our way to Montenegro, to the cities of Kotor and Budva. One of the most beautiful places in the Balkans; it was completely different from all the other areas we visited as it completely escaped Ottoman influence. The cities of Kotor and Budva were like medieval Italian cities and it almost felt like being inside a Shakespeare play.

weekend | travel

Mostar Mostar is famous for its beautiful medieval bridge, constructed over the beautiful emerald green Neretva River with a bustling Turkish bazaar on either side of it. In the past Muslim boys in the area were too poor to pay the bride price when asking for a girl’s hand and so to prove their love they would jump in the river in order to get the family’s consent. It has now become a popular sport and divers come and jump into the River from this bridge. It is also a tradition in Mostar to give baby girls the name Neretva if they happen to have green eyes.

From Srebrenica we made our way to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina a beautiful city hustling and bustling high above the green mountains of Bosnia. It is sometimes called the Jerusalem of Europe, as it is one of the few European cities that has a mosque, an orthodox church, a catholic church and a synagogue in the same neighbourhood.

Sarena Mosque

Our first stop on our way to Skopje was Sarena Mosque in Tetovo. Going to the Balkans without any preconceived notions or any idea of what to expect, this came as a very big surprise. Having associated Macedonia only with Alexander the Great, I never expected to find a mosque there let alone one that is so unique in its architecture and decorative style. Two sisters, daughters of an ottoman pasha, commissioned it but unlike the traditional ottoman ceramic tile decorations, the Sarena has bright floral paintings. More than 30,000 eggs were used to prepare the paint and glaze that went into its elaborate decorations.

Skopje From Belgrade we set off on our way to Bosnia and Herzegovina where the most wonderful but also the most heart-breaking part of our journey awaited us. Our first destination was Srebrenica where the massacre of July 1995 took place. The factories, which were the scene of this crime, have been left the way they were and there is footage, images and video installations for visitors to see what crimes took place there. Across from the factories is the ever-growing cemetery of the people who were massacred, where namaz-ejinnaza is held every year as more bodies are found and buried.

December 2, 2018 | 63

Srebrenica

Skopje is the capital and the largest city of Macedonia. The town was under Ottoman control for 500 years and the current iconic stone bridge over the Vardar River was constructed over the original Roman foundations by Fatih Sultan Mehmet II. The bridge divides the new town from the old town. The old town of Skopje is a typical Turkish city with a bazaar, mosque, madrasah and caravansary. On the other side of the bridge is a new city filled with sculptures; the most iconic among these are those of Alexander the Great and that of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

DECEMBER 02, 2018 | 66

It started with an idea that rose out of personal misfortune. Kulsume Hai, a member of Pakistan’s prestigious Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS), had long wanted to work for a charitable cause. “I joined the civil service in 2004 with the hope that I would be able to help people. I wanted to do something good for my country.” However, as time passed, she found herself getting into the rigmarole of government, unable to make a real difference for ”people, who had no contacts, no sifarish.” In 2011, she and her husband divorced due to differences. She saw her three children suffer. “We belonged to the affluent segment of society, where my children only lacked time from parents who worked. Still, I saw them suffer the effects of a broken home. I realized that children are the most vulnerable among us and no special attention is there for them in our government structures, or a safety net in the form of protection services against abuse and maltreatment, nor a comprehensive system to support orphans, single-parent families or destitute or poor children. I said to myself, those orphans and street children who have no social security, how much must they suffer. I decided then that I would work in this area.” Despite hosting one of the youngest populations in Pakistan there is no comprehensive government social safety net in the country. Even in the private sector, barring a few orphanages, no organization in the country was working exclusively on children-related issues, especially orphans. Kulsume Hai, along with some family members, founded Panaah Welfare Organization as a NGO in

November 2016.” Panaah works with orphans, impoverished children, disabled & street children, providing them maintenance & clothing and opportunities/resources required to pursue their education. “We have not built an institution yet or put children in it. We identify children & support them while they live with families, and monitor their progress and well-being. When we start supporting a child or young person, we “adopt” the child and offer support “ Panaah is funded through private donations. Our funds come from Pakistanis who wish to help the children of this country to access a better future. We don’t consider it charity. Our children are our future. If we spend on them and help them attain a better and safer life and give them access to good education, we are investing in a better future for our country as these children have a chance to grow into productive citizens. This is why our motto is: Invest in the Child, Invest in our Future.” Apart from private donations, Panaah also invites people to “adopt a child” through their website. “Even if you cannot physically adopt a child but do have the intention and resources to help, adopt a child virtually by selecting him/her on our website panaahwelfare.org and pay for maintenance or education or both, and monitor their progress. There is also the option to volunteer to help out. In a year and a half, Panaah has been able to support around 450 children in Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi. It is also embarking on a pilot Union Council survey to identify deserving children in urban Lahore. “This exercise will not only help us improve our coverage, but will also give us

some much-needed data on the quantum of the problem.” Panaah is collaborating with Sahil, an NGO working against child abuse, for raising awareness about child protection issues, as well as counseling victims of violence. “We are also working towards playing an advocacy role for child rights and bridging the gaps in our legal system to provide comprehensive legislation for the protection of children. We want Pakistan to create an enabling environment for its children in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, though we are still very far from reaching this goal. But to reach a goal, we need to be aware of what needs to be done. I am personally in favor of banning children working as domestic help and child labor, but we need more debate on this issue to create consensus in our society. It might be a novel idea to some, who think this is a means of livelihood, but banning it would also make the state responsible for children and holding the parents more accountable for their children’s protection and upkeep. However, these are social issues also, and while raising awareness of this, in the meanwhile we need to support children who need help”. How does she see Panaah doing in the future? “As any other organization would want, we see ourselves expanding our ability to reach out to needy children, and eventually might open some centers for them too, but what I hope to achieve is changing the attitudes of our society on how we treat our children. We need to treat them much better, with much more kindness and compassion. We need to look at them as individuals rather than potential working hands or dependents to be dominated. Children need to be cherished and protected like flowering plants, only then can they bloom in the right way. I also hope to make the government forms a social safety net for children and establish effective protective services like that in the US. This eventually is the job of the government; we can only help and work as catalysts for our society in the right direction.”Meanwhile, Panaah, which means shelter, will continue providing the neediest children protection against the storms.
