THE DESIGNER’s VISION SOZAN KAAR @sozankaar

Muse: Scheherazade Junejo photography: MAHA KAYANI

weekend | fashion NOVEMBER 04, 2018 | 51

Sozan Kaar by Guddo Haider Tajammul is back with a new collection of traditional regalia, impeccably created with time-honoured artisanal crafts of the subcontinent. Guddo’s design philosophy is centred around a revivalist aesthetic, reimagining the forgotten glory of an age gone by. The unique pieces feature hand tyed chundrees with tikki dori work, pitta on makhmals, kachi marori and bal marori; reviving lost in time techniques and taankas like fareesha, waslee, dhog, peepal girah and kacha resham on rich materials like zarbaff, makhmals, tanchoees and tissue.

Artist

What does the word art mean to you? ‘’There really is no such thing as Art. There are only artists.’’ - E. H. Gombrich

What is your work influenced by? My visual language is developed from the most mundane of tasks and our cozy spaces. It is through these visuals that I talk about the hierarchies, which exist not only in our homes but in the society at large. By doing this, personally, a house becomes a metaphor for the country.

What was the very first piece you created? There are two ways of looking at it: If we just talk about ‘a piece’ that I created, it would be a sharpener cover I designed when I was around 5 years old (I still remember it well). My mom wouldn’t buy me a fancy sharpener which stores all the shavings inside so I made my own with whatever I found in my drawer. On the other hand, I started making ‘art’ while I was at Beaconhouse National University, before that everything I came up with was art, for me atleast.

weekend | Fashion

Name a few artists who inspire you. Ai Wei Wei Richard Serra Olafur Eliasson

NOVEMBER 04, 2018 | 57

What is the idea/concept behind your most recent exhibition? My interest in the exploration of found material is evident in all my works including my recent exhibition at Alhamra Art Gallery, Lahore. I think it’s slightly important to me that my visual is understandable to the masses. Even if they can’t decipher the whole concept or understand know the process, the visual itself should aid a layman in making connection.

weekend | Fashion

How would you describe your pieces? Each material / object that I have used comes with its own connotations which I altered through juxtaposition or the mere act of dislocating it from its natural environment. That resulted in a chaos within the object itself. The visual seems familiar yet narrates/discloses a story untold.

What themes or symbol have you explored? My theme has always revolved around the idea of private spaces and the objects found within them. Objects have a set personality and I enjoy questioning the identity/ materiality personality of such objects and spaces.

NOVEMBER 04, 2018 | 58

In what way do you think your work impacts the society? I wouldn’t say it has an impact on society. ‘Impact’ I think is a strong word. I would say that my work is a part of society; it is taken from society and presented back to them with a different identity. Is there anyone is particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be and why? For my mother. All the work I have ever produced is stored with her but I have never able to make anything for her in particular. It is a challenge I would love to take up, creating something that is like a tribute to from a daughter to her mother who have always stood by her and supported her at every step.

Fashion director, creative consultant, and digital influencer, Anum Bashir of The Desert Mannequin has a unique sense of style that will never bore you. Seriously, we stalk and shop everything this woman wears on the daily! She makes trends look trendier and keeps fashion forward with every step she takes. What we love most about her personal style though, is the fact that she keeps it modest in an Instagram world saturated with the Kardashianesque bare-it-all aesthetic.
