Malnutrition Interventions
Reaching out to the most vulnerable
december 10, 2017 | 94
Pakistan is currently facing a silent crisis of malnutrition that has not improved in decades. Women and children remain the most affected. According to the National Nutrition Survey 2011, one-third of all children are underweight, nearly 44pc are stunted, 15pc are wasted and half of them are anaemic. Malnutrition is also rampant among women of reproductive age suffering from anemia, usually related to iron deficiency. What of the economic implications?Malnutrition is responsible for 3-4 percent of GDP loss in Pakistan in any given year, which is even bigger than the energy crisis (2 percent of GDP).Source: United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition (SCN) fifth report on the world nutrition situation. It leads to costly inefficiencies; illnesses and deaths. It has direct links to decreased physical activity and to impaired cognitive development. Despite the better economic conditions and an agrarian population, Pakistan’s nutrition indicators and rates of maternal and childhood nutrition progress remain abysmal and have fallen way behind others in the region. One of the possible solutions considered is implementing quality programs that ultimately lead to behavioural change. That is only possible by ensuring widespread awareness of the importance of good nutrition and translating that awareness into a healthy lifestyle. In this regard, the private sector has a significant part to play. As the world’s largest Nutrition, Health and Wellness organisation and with 150 years of
experience in the science of nutrition, it’s only natural that is plays its part in resolving this issue. In Pakistan, it strives to take on the challenge of behavioural change through two of its flagship programmes; Nestle Healthy Kids (NHK) and Nestlé Healthy Women (NHW).
Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme: “It is an exciting initiative. It gives us an opportunity to train the master trainers (teachers) who are extremely close to the kids and can influence them to make better food choices so that they can eat well and live well. It will also go a long way in reducing the burden of disease.” – Nutritionist Trainer, Dr. Riffat Ayesha Anees With nutrition related problems such as obesity, non-communicable diseases and chronic health conditions on the rise in Pakistan, good nutrition is becoming increasingly important. Nestlé Health Kids Programme (NHK) was launched in Pakistan Q&A session during nutrition class
in 2010. To date, the programme has educated more than 100,000 children, trained over 500 teachers on nutrition in 200 schools across the country. The programme has a nationwide approach and has covered schools across Punjab, Sindh and KPK and aspires to reach more areas. The programme works in collaboration with 10 partners from the development, private and public sector, including;Punjab Education Foundation, Punjab Workers Welfare Board, CARE Foundation, Zindagi Trust,The Federal Directorate of Education and Trust for Education and Development of Deserving Students (TEDDS) to name a few.The programme aims to reach an additional 40,000 kids by the end of 2017. The primary beneficiaries are school children between the ages of 06 to 16 years. NHK is a curriculumbased programme, comprising two books. The text books’ content, made in collaboration with publishing giants; the Oxford University Press,

The concepts they learn are Nestlé Healthy Kids Day organized by Nestlé in 2016 in which reiterated on the Nestlé Healthy Kids students from all our partners joined in Lahore Day throughcompetitions and art and crafts activities. So far 8 rooms are operational in partner schools. young women and their next generation. To date the programme has reached out to more than 3500 young women across 11 universities nationwide such as Kinnaird College, Forman Christian College and Bahauddin Zikariya University amongst others. In 2018, the scope of the programme will be expanded across rural areas as well to ensure improved nutrition outcomes. An important dimension of the programme in the near future, will be to work with Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) beneficiaries. Along with providing these beneficiaries with livelihood opportunities; this program aims at informing and empowering them to make better nutritional choices for themselves and their family. The programme will be launched in Renala and Pindi Bhattian. Nestlé Healthy Women is based multiple stages each with a reward for those who make it to the next stage. These stages include Nutritional Awareness sessions, conventional quizzes, digital engagement, handson healthy cooking classes, poster presentations and engagement with senior management at Nestlé. In addition, successful participants are offered an internship program that encompasses extensive exposure to the organization and possible future prospects.
