Unless you’re Donald Trump, you are probably aware of the fact that our planet is on the brink of a severe environmental crisis. You saw (and smelt) it in the Hexus-like smog that enveloped Lahore last winter; you can feel it in the sweltering heat and extreme seasonal temperatures, and you hear about the imminent water shortages (and energy shortages) just around the corner. We are in a state of planetary emergency, but while policy makers are too busy with nukes (or NAB!) to focus on laws & initiatives to protect our environment, it falls to each of us to play a part in saving our home. As citizens of the world, this is our responsibility! Even celebrities like Leonardo Di Caprio and supermodel Gisele Bundchen (who recently sported a 100% eco-friendly, non-waste dress at the MET Gala) have adopted green living. As Pakistanis and cricket lovers, we are always cheering “Go Green” and “Bleed Green” - now let’s put those words into action too. Helping our environment might seem like an impossible task but it really doesn’t have to be. Every little bit helps! Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world. Here are just a few everyday things that you can practice to make a difference in saving our future:

waste not water

It is easy to forget that water is a scarce resource and therefore one to be used wisely. In modern life it is often pumped through hydraulics and other unnatural, gas-emitting processes which aren’t great for the environment. Now while we can’t go without water, there are certainly low effort major impact ways that we can help conserve water. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth, cut your regular shower duration down by five minutes, fix leaky faucets, water your garden in the mornings when evaporation is lowest and make sure you /your staff waits for a full load of laundry to accumulate before they run the machine. These little hacks might seem inconsequential but I promise the planet will thank you for them. Even if you make one change out of all of these options, imagine the water you will save over your lifetime.

(but mean it!) The last straw

Avoid using single-use plastic, such as straws, which take two minutes to use but two hundred years to decompose! You’ll be shocked to know that all the plastic straws used in the world still exist, dumped in our oceans, killing marine life. Get your kids to use metal straws that can be washed and refused or better yet if you can avoid it, don’t use them at all! Don’t opt for plastic q-tips (did you know q-tips are terrible for your ears anyone) and clean your ears out in the shower instead! If you’re grabbing some takeout and know you won’t need the plastic cutlery make sure to tell the restaurant not to give you any – waste not want not!

Say bye to the bottle

Plastic water bottles may seem convenient but they’re not just terrible for the planet, they’re awful for our health too. Altering the natural PH balance of water, plastic containers are not always safe (especially in the kind of extreme temperatures Pakistan experiences)! So do yourselves and the world a favour and get a refillable bottle made of glass, ceramics or a metal of your choosing! We promise it’ll be healthier, much more Earth friendly and CHEAPER!

Carpool

There are already too many cars on the road and whether or not you drive yourself, you are subject to dead end traffic jams almost every day. Carpooling, especially during rush hours, will not only help reduce carbon emissions, it will also give your nerves a break. Make friends with neighbours and school parents and send your children to school together if you live in the same area. Also, let your crisp clothes crumple a little and go to lunch in one car, instead of taking your individual cars to the same place.

Choose the r ight bulb

You don’t ha immediate ve to replace all th blows ou ly if they’re workin e bulbs in your ho t, re us g the CFL (c place it with a m , but the next time e ore eco-fri o ompact fl uorescen endly bulb ne savers ca t li , like g n h ti m n ake a g). Ye last five ti mes long space look a little s, these energy er than irid c escent bu linic-y, but they lbs and a re muc brighter to h o! Just because generators have become a part of life, don’t forget the energy crisis! Emissions from generators and from power plants that generate all the electricity we use are hazardous to the environment and human health. Little moves can make a big difference: switch off the lights, even if its just one lamp, in a room that isn’t being used; don’t leave air conditioners running constantly; don’t use your washers and dryers on a daily basis; unplug appliances when they aren’t being used etc. Conserving energy in your homes can be done in multiple ways, and it will help lessen emissions and your electricity bill!

Switch off

Reduce food waste

june 10, 2018 | 68

Did you know that most of the food we waste ends up in landfills that eventually turns into destructive greenhouse gasses? Get your food packed at restaurants and give it to someone hungry or have the leftovers the next day! When shopping for food, don’t overbuy and be aware of expiry dates so you’re throwing out less food and consuming on a need, not want, basis. Since most of us are lucky enough to have a garden, start a compost pile (i.e recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem) of your wasted food.

Treasure the trees

In a time when air index quality is perpetually described as “hazardous”, trees should be our best friends. Only they can cleanse the air naturally and most effectively.. so, please. stop. cutting. them!! Plant more trees in your homes and public spaces and create a ruckus when the government plans to chop down trees for expanding roads. On a daily basis, use less paper - use more digital communication (e-invites, baking statements etc), switch tissue rolls for towelettes, print less or use both sides of a paper, recycle your old newspapers and magazines. There are so many ways in which you can make a difference. Even if you pick just one, you will leave the world a better place for our children.

Realisation no.2 He is as much responsible for the existence of my children as I am.

Mahvish Ahmad @mahvish.ahmad

june 10, 2018 | 74

I am a mum, an economics teacher, a photographer and apparently something what they call a blogger. I am a Lahori Karachiite so I like my biryani with lassi. I believe life is short so one should experiment with new things with a vengeance. I am a sucker for Bollywood, travelling and anything that’s sweet. I love Sidharth Malhotra and if he ever offers, I am ready to run away with him. Currently exported to Switzerland with love. I did something a little “odd” 2 weeks ago – “odd” in the eyes of the Pakistani society to be precise. There was a very special family occasion back home and it was my utmost wish to be there for the celebrations. So, my 6 year old (called Minha) and I travelled to Pakistan while my 11 month old (called Shehrbano) and her father stayed back in Switzerland. Pakistani khawateen be like: “Kyaaaaaa???????” Let me explain. In February, I travelled to and back from Pakistan with both my children and to date, I am not quite over the trauma.Bano didn’t

sleep for 12 hours straight. Her incessant howls throughout the plane ride made me sweat from those parts of my body where I didn’t even know sweat glands existed. I am sure a lot of fellow passengers would sue me for damages if the option for suing over a crying baby existed. I had to carry her across the airport at Abu Dhabi which gave me shoulder and arm pain for the next 3 months. True story. In the middle of this fiasco, Minha’s unrelenting bathroom and headphone-fixing needs gave me an unwanted crash course of professional juggling. Hence, I was in no

mood to go through a nightmarish flight again. When I had almost decided to not go for the family function in lieu of the scary flight forecast, my very wise (most of the time) husband came up with a grand plan: the baby stays. I was obviously over the moon at the prospect of gettingundisturbed sleep after a whole year and the deal was sealed without much argument taking place between us very mature adults. Now, since I blog, the “big news” was revealed to my Instagram family. The messages and comments of women

were multifaceted –they wanted to understand how F agreed to do something like this as well as how I felt while travelling without Bano. Let’s talk about F’s agreement first. Parenthood for us means we are in it together. With no external help or support, both of us need to contribute equally when it comes to the children. While sharing the diapers, showers, meals, naps and school runs, F knows the children as much as I do. Well…almost. Based on his excellent capabilities of taking care of his ‘own’ children, I have taken a few day trips and a weekend trip on my own already. So, when he came up with his million-dollar idea, I knew it wasn’t something unfathomable. Aglamauzoo…how the experience was for me. I’d like todescribe it as GREAT. During the flight, I didn’t miss Bano one bit. I enjoyed the meal service as well as the entertainment system. EvenMinhaseemed glad the baby was with baba. “You’re so pleasant this time mama” she said. So, I am pretty sure on the last flight, I resembled one of Khaleesi’s dragons. During my time home, I enjoyed not waking up for milk/ crying-for-no-reason episodes multiple times in the night. It was refreshing to be able to concentrate on myself for a change, on my clothes my hair and my makeup. I was able to fully enjoy the seekh kababsand my time with my family instead of dealing with the baby’s jet lag and the guaranteed tummy bug.I even went to the spa twice. Did I miss my little one at all? Of course. I’m a mum. I even had a crying

episode. But would I do something like this again? Hell, yes! To conclude this piece which is getting longer that I thought it will – why is it “odd” if a mother takes such a break? Why was it the talk of the drawing room that I have left my baby back in Switzerland? Kyaaaa? Baapkepaaschorhaai? Jaiseymeinkahinsarhak pe phainkaii! In fact, I was glad she was chilling with her dad in the comfort of her home instead of going through the fatigue oftravelling. With reference to the skipped chapter of Reproduction in biology books, if the father is as much responsible for the existence of child as the mother, then why is childcare the responsibility of the mother alone? Why does the typical saas frown when the pyara beta‘babysits’ the child? Why do we even use the word ‘babysit’ when the father is in question. We don’t use it for the mother… who basically babysits 24/7. Why is “mein pamper nahinbadloonga”considered okay if the pyara beta saysit? Would it be okay if the bahusaid the same? The fact of the matter is that when a couple decides to have a child, the child belongs to the both of them. The diapers, the homeworks and drivingto-bithday-partiesare not just the aurat ka kaam. When my husband is alone with the kids, he says he gets to bond with them. And bonding with YOUR children is beautiful, all you lazy daddies out there! When I came back home and asked F how it was managing the baby without me, he, being a man of a few words, replied: “fit”. And yes…that was it.
