Hella heart eyes for you

Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Aly are our absolute favourites when it comes to on-screen couples. And if their chemistry in Yaqeen Ka Safar wasn’t enough, the duo is just as close in real life. In a recent interview for BBC Asian Network the gorgeous actor Ahad almost spilled the beans on his relationship with his costar Sajal ALy. We’re suckers for a cute love story so we can’t wait to see how this one goes!

23 year old Pakistani songbird Momina Mustehsan is a chameleon when it comes to her hair as one would expect from a L’Oréal ambassador! She’s great at switching up hair colours & styles with effortless panache but we’re not totally sold on her new redhead vibes. What’s your verdict?

01

The natural beauty. Pakistan is a treasure trove of natural beauty with each site more spectacular than the last. From the incredible expanse of sandy deserts across Balochistan to the rugged beauty of Skardu’s mountains. Our country is not only a natural haven but one of immense variety; from the hidden waterfalls in Hunza, to the sparkling waters of Gawadar, to the worlds second highest mountain peak K2 and the infamous killer mountain ‘Nanga Parbat’. The Khewra Salt mines (the second largest & oldest in the world) and the Thraparkar Desert (the worlds only fertile desert) are all found within our borders. It was for good reason then that Pakistan found itself among the top 10 travel destinations of 2018!

While we don’t condone arms proliferation, we are proud to be the first Islamic nation in the world to attain nuclear power (which we hope will be harnessed for good purposes)!

03

The People. It is said that the people make the place

august 12, 2018 | 58

and indeed we find that to be incredibly true of our homeland. Unless you’ve experienced Pakistani hospitality you haven’t really witnessed what true warmth feels like. We welcome everyone from tourists to refugees with open arms.

The Music.

The music. Pakistan is birthplace to many a velvet voice, from legendary qawal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Farida Khanum, to the Malika e Tarunnum Noor Jehan and Saabri brothers. Genres clash and collide from rock to pop to Sufi and more with the likes of Ali Zafar, Kashmir The Band, Vital Signs, Junoon, Strings, Abida Parveen, Zoe VIccaji, Momina Mustehsan, Arooj Nawab, SomewhatSuper, Meesha Shafi, Overload, Vivid, Fake Shamans, and Jimmy Khan. And these are but a few. Who can forget the gravelly throaty croonings of Pathanay Khan’s devotional songs, or Nazia and Zoheb’s classic 80s pop.

04

The diversity. There is no such thing as a stereotypical Pakistani. With 5 provinces, 212 million people and a kaleidoscope of cultures, our homeland is a beautiful melting pot of different traditions, languages and ethnicities.

Weddings.

You haven’t experienced celebration until you’ve been to a big fat desi wedding! We are a nation that loves to celebrate so our nuptials are rarely a one day affair. From dance practices, to dholkis parties and Milad dinners with a lot of photo sessions in between, we do it all.

08

07

Abdul Sattat Eidhi. A name that needs no introduction and one that inspires hope during our darkest hours. The Eidhi foundation is a non-profit social welfare organization that has made incredible strides in helping our communities and runs the world’s largest volunteer run ambulance service.

The architecture. The rich history and heritage. From the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and ruins of Mohenjadaro to the stupas and millennia old Gandhara ruins at Taxila, Pakistan’s history shows us the progressive civilisations from which we take root. The hand painted tiles of the Badshahi Mosque and the artisanal skills on display at the Wazir Khan Mosque and Jahangir’s Tomb are further evidence of the deep layers of culture that permeate Pakistani society.

Despite what you might see in interna-

From national icons Benazir Bhutto (the first female prime minister to be pregnant and give birth all during her office term) to Asma Jahangir the fearless human rights activist and lawyer who dedicated her life to helping women. Bilquis Edhi helped raise hundreds of children as her own. Malala Yousafzai, youngest Nobel Peace prize winner to Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid, the list is endless. And let’s not forget

While Pakistani authors like

Mohsin Hamid and Kamila Shamshie have made waves in recent years, Pakistan has a rich history of outstanding poets, authors, and literature, including the brilliance of Sara Suleri and Bapsi Sidhwa. We experience all four seasons to the fullest in Pakistan! The most enjoyable is the unpredictable rain we experience; the smell of mitti on a rainy day, sipping on a garam chai ki pyali is everything!

The National Anthem. Pak Sar Zameen is rated number one in the list of best anthems. It was written in Persian by the renowned poet Hafeez Jalandhri and despite being sung in a different language, you can feel every word!

The Family Life. As much as we

may feel we need a break from our families, there is indeed no place like home. Pakistanis are one the most family oriented people and we love spending time with our loved ones. It is definitely the most comforting feeling knowing that a Khala, Mamu, Phupo or cousin are just a call away if you need anything.

24

Cricket. Nothing brings our people closer than when we are glued to our screens over a Pak-India cricket match, or even Pak-England. Patriotism is seen at its loudest, ‘Bleeding Green’ for our cricket team!

Shafaq Habib

Shafaq Habib is one of Lahore’s most renowned makers of exquisite jewellery, celebrating South Asian heritage in a reimagined aesthetic.

When I started in 1981, jewelry designing was not a recognised field. I attended classes at New York’s Diamond Exchange and learnt basic jewelry designing and manufacturing as well as stone identification.

With so many new jewelers on the rise, how do you maintain your niche in the market? We tirelessly stay loyal to our design philosophy and try to understand our clients evolving needs and that keeps our clients coming back to us. If your designs were a person how would you describe them? Unique, glamorous yet practical! What is a regular day like in the life of a Jewellery designer? Everyday day presents a

AUGUST 12, 2018 | 63

I What is your design philosophy? Our design philosophy is to create unique wearable contemporary pieces that celebrate our rich south Asian heritage. When and how was your jewellery brand launched? I established my brand in 1981 in New York City. Starting my career at Lord & Taylor on 5th Avenue under the label, ‘Pearls Galore.’ At the time I created every piece of Jewellery myself. I re-launched myself in Pakistan in the 1990s focusing on jewellery for today’s South Asian women. Do you have an educational background in jewellery designing? I have a bachelor’s degree in Art and Design from Home Economics College.

new challenge. Trends keep evolving which allows a designer to dig into their creativity and execute their innovative ideas. What are your designs inspired by? I’m always looking for inspiration. My designs are inspired by traditional south asian aesthetics and elegant modern western pieces. Name one person that you would love to dress up in your jewelry? Mahira Khan. She carries herself with a lot if dignity and grace. What has been the biggest challenge in your journey so far? I find myself so consumed with work that it becomes difficult to make time for recreational activities with family and friends.

What has been the most rewarding moment? Every time i receive a compliment for a design i make, it feels like the biggest reward i could ever receive. Where do you see your brand going in the next ten years? I have a wonderful team and in the years to come i hope to see the brand reach unprecedented heights both locally and abroad.
