zahra hussain Artist
@zahrahussainart
What does art mean to you? Who/what is your work influenced by? Your inspirations including artists who inspire you.
Art is connecting emotions. We are able to transcend the limitations of language, culture, and time through art. For me, it is essentially life, as we live it, breathe it feel it and hear it around us constantly. My work is largely influenced by the vagabond nature of my life so far, as I have lived in many different countries across Africa, the Middle East, North America and Europe. Living in Beirut, especially during the lead up to the 2006 war, particularly inspires my work. Through my work, I am introspecting and assessing the challenges I face as a female Pakistani Canadian artist exploring my identity whilst having grown up in eight vastly different, complex and some volatile socio-political societies. Having witnessed firsthand, the impact of war on society, I am particularly captivated by the works of Jalaludin Rumi, Hafiz and Omar Khayyam, all of whom dissect the human psyche and the importance of introspection. Whilst, my style of painting is influenced by more ‘western’ (so to speak) artists, as I have been enamored by Amedo Modigliani since the age of ten, and find comfort in Jackson Pollock’s work. Zeina Barakeh and Asad Faruki are two living artists who have also influenced my work. FEBRUary 17, 2019 | 40
What was the very first piece you created?
The very first piece I created was a series of ink sketches on the 1947 partition. I wanted to capture the plight of those who had to flee their homes and begin a new life in Pakistan, leaving their entire lives behind in one night.

the unconscious mind, and is often spontaneously created without preplanned sketches (Pollock) which is a concept that resonates highly with my work. Ink. I love the challenging and unforgiving nature of ink, and how once it’s on paper or canvas, there is no going back. It’s a difficult medium to gain control over. The ability to navigate it to my liking and create movement out of chaos has taken me eight years. I also like experimenting with different mediums such as beeswax, modelling paste, and oil paint when creating texture.
How would you describe your pieces?
My work plays on the impact of politics and societal norms on these messages, and tries to compel us to first seek goodness within us and then within others despite the problems we face. My dervishes are not soft and whimsical because they reflect our inner conflict--our inner conflict, in turn, serving as a microcosm of our beleaguered world at large. They defiantly whirl, dancing away chaos and imperfections, inspiring us to do the same individually and collectively.
There isn’t any specific period or kind of art that I identify with more than others. However, most paintings that I like tend to fall under impressionism, abstract expressionism and modern art. All three schools of thought challenged the rules of art during their times, and incorporated different techniques of painting. For example, impressionists created a lot of movement in still life through their brush strokes and use of color. Whereas, with modern art, the ability to manipulate form and lines, and create emotion through it appeals
to me. My sketches and pieces are very modern in nature, whilst they portray very traditional middle eastern/asian concepts. Whereas, abstract expressionism focuses on the idea that art should be from
Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work?
My five year old niece proudly shows my abstract sketches of whirling dervishes to everyone who visits her home and gives them a disclaimer that they are actually humans in case they can’t see. An Israeli couple bought two of my pieces on their last day in London after randomly walking into my show last November. They recently contacted me and stated that they have fallen in love with Rumi’s teachings which they researched after being intrigued by the pieces. My work has been collected and displayed in twelve different countries across the globe this year, from Nepal to New York.

What is your ultimate goal/dream as an artist?
My ultimate goal is to invoke introspection in whoever views my work. I would like for my work to cause some sort of internal dialogue. As I believe that we must understand ourselves to understand the complex socio-political world we inhabit. Introspection of our habits, reactions and behavior is of paramount importance. If I may, perhaps the world’s salvation teeters on our collective ability to identify and transcend feelings of anger and hatred when facing adversity. The concepts of love, tolerance and universal unity, stem from introspection. A collective inner engagement with ourselves can ultimately have a wider impact on our societies.
Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be, and why? At the moment, Jalaluddin Rumi as a lot of my current work revolves around his teachings. I would have loved to see whether he would have felt the power and sense of transcendence in my work, especially when I work with movement (whirling in particular).

WOMEN EMPOWERMNET IS PROMOTION OUR RIGHT, NOT A GRANT! out of 149 countries in the Global Gender Index 2018report released by the World Economic Forum. This really shows that we need centuries to achieve gender parity and change the mindset of our so called laissez-faire society The most wide spread and dehumanizing discriminations against women are on
By Tajwar Baig the basis of the biased perspective. The ordeal that Pakistani girl faces at the birth is only the beginning of a life long struggle to be seen and heard. Why to put the burden of traditions, culture and honor on the shoulders of women and mark their growth. The incidences of honor killing and rape reveal the distorted social fiber in the male dominated society. Replacing Patriarchy with parity is much needed as the need of an hour is egalitarian society where there is no place for superiority. Our women do not have access to resources, rights and entitlements. It is not going to be easy to change the culture of disregard for women but it isn’t mean that it is implausible. Only revolutions bring changes in a day but reforms take their time. The idea of women empowerment might sound hard by the yard but by the inch it is just a cinch. All we need ia a concentrated effort focused
in the right direction that would rest with the liberation of women from all forms of evil. If a man aims to empower his leading lady at home then indirectly he is forcing to empower a family. Why can’t we let women entitled to live with dignity and freedom to spend fear free and contended life? Why the society takes their efforts as granted? Women empowerment is a critical aspect of achieving gender equality. It involves increasing a woman’s sense of self worth, give her decision making power, her access to opportunities and her power to control her own life inside and outside the home The conventional system which hardly allows them to flourish must require an inevitable change.
Women Empowerment is our right not a grant!
FEBRUARY 17, 2019 | 63
Our society has the habit of stigmatizing all behaviors that are seen as “FEMININE . Crying, getting hurt, wanting kids, marriage, believing in true love, that list is so endless. There is a lot of differentiation and discrimination in the name of gender and nevertheless this difference do exist in nature from time immemorial. We have a transitional society and its rich, cultural milieu and its value system reflect an intermingling of tribal, feudal and capitalist social formation. Though men define strength, women are actually the ones who not only define power, rather establish it every moment. In all realms of life, it takes courage for a woman to stretch out her limits, to express power and to fulfill her potential. There is no denying the fact that women in Pakistan have made a considerable progress in almost seven decades of independence but still have to struggle against many handicaps and social evils in our so called male dominated society. Many evil and masculine forces still prevail in our modern society that resists the forward march of of its women folk. There has been amelioration in the position of women but their true empowerment is still awaited. Why our modern society not granting women the freedom to make life choices. Many social, political and economic provisions were incorporated in the women rights acts but due to deep rooted patriarchal mentality in our society women are still victimized, humiliated, tortured and exploited. There has been no dearth of social, political, legal and constitutional efforts made for the empowerment of women both prior to and post independence. Still women continue to face atrocities, human trafficking, rape, dowry killings, acid attacks etc. Pakistan is the second worst country in the world in terms of gender parity ranking 148
