THE DESIGNER’S VISION Yousuf Bashir Qureshi’s passions range from fashion design, photography and painting, to food science and farming. Having graduated with a degree in Food Sciences, Yousuf landed in the fashion industry by an unlikely inspiration as a horse trainer in the United States. He also opened a South Asian inspired fashion café where he learnt the artistry of fashion design so unique that it turned heads all the way in Hollywood. Upon returning to Pakistan in 2002, the designer embraced the local artistic evolution

The Dressing Room This week Tea m Weekend speaks with one of K arachi’s resident fashionistas,

Sa mira Dada

Your personal style in three words:

May 21, 2017 | 80

Classic, Minimalist, Chic

If you had any fashion designer in the world at your command to create a complete wardrobe for you who would it be and why?

House of Chanel. Epitome of Chic !

What’s your quickest go-to look for out of the house in ten minutes?

Skinny jeans, crisp white shirt, oversized shades and flats.

Trends you think were created for you and those you wish never existed?

I try not to follow trends and prefer to dress in what suits my body type and what I feel comforta ble in.

A person or character whose style inspires you:

Olivia Palermo

Honestly nothing I’m really lusting after, but having said that if I’m let loose I definitely would not come back empty handed!!!

New Y ork City. It has a great vibe and a mazing energ y. Its a melting pot of diverse and exciting fashion from all over the world!

Fashion items in your wish-list right now

What has been your biggest investment in fashion?

My biggest investment in fashion is the realisation that less is ALMOST always more. K nowing when to stop is key! In what way do you think your current style should change

Classic and simple always works but its fun to add a twist ! I should be more daring with my fashion choices !

The Bea

I came, I saw

Your face is not a disco ball

Highlighter pens we recommend

U

do’s

Highlighting

se a highlighter; a highlighter is a product which is lighter than your skin tone and foundation, meant to (you guessed it) highlight certain areas of your face by bringing attention to the lighter color.

U

se a foundation exactly the color of your skin. If you’re an average Pakistani who feels no shame in using a foundation one or two shades (maybe three) lighter than their skin tone, using a highlighter yet another shade lighter than your foundation will only make you look like cruella de ville from a distance (and even more so up close haha)

don’ts

D

on’t use a luminizer. In everyday terms we usually call luminizers highlighters, which they’re not! Luminizers are irridescent products meant to give a shine to your cheekbones, cupid’s bow and under brow areas. DO NOT use a luminizer in place of a highlighter on the highlighter areas shown above, unless you want to look like a wannabe Beyoncé going to the Met Gala. You are not Beyoncé. And there’s even less chance of you going to the Met Gala. Match your shade please!

I Fan brush for highlighting

May 21, 2017 | 90

B

e armored with the correct tools (brushes, sponges, beauty blenders, the works) before entering this very treacherous area of highlighting and contouring. These techniques were just not made to be executed the old fashioned way, using our palms to massage all makeup into our skin. Set the under eye highlight with a translucent powder to prevent creasing. Laura Mercier translucent setting powder

f you’re being a good girl and using your actual color foundation, don’t ruin it by using a highlighter several shades lighter or it’ll look stripey and blotchy. Highlighter is best used one shade lighter than your foundation (which we’ve already established should be exactly your skin tone even if you have a Pakistani passport) unless you’re a professional makeup artist (which, frankly, most of us are not!)

D

on’t forget to blend, blend, blend until there are no visible borders between the dark and light shades. You’ll definitely need a beauty blender type wet sponge to take away excess highlighter from under your eyes, which can tend to look very cakey otherwise.

weekend | lifestyle

auty Edit

w, I contoured!

nor are you a tribal princess

Favourite shades for contouring!

U

D

T

D

se a specialised contouring product (no brown eye shadows or bronzers). You’ll need something with grey undertones as you want to create the illusion of a shadow. This will be almost the color of your under eye darkness (sorry we had to go there) or if you suck in your cheeks to make a fish face; the shadows that form in the hollows of your cheeks, that’s the shade you’re looking for. ry to use a contour stick instead of a powdered product, it’s easier to control and blend. Some of our favorites are the NYX highlighting/contouring pen and the Smash Box contouring trio markers. These give you precision and control and their creamy consistency is easy to blend.

Smashbox contour stick trio

B

lend till your arms hurt; blending contour is essential! It can either give you the chiseled look of Angeline Jolie, or can go very very wrong.

don’ts

O NOT use a bronzer for contouring unless you want to look like Donald Trump. Run miles away from anything that has orange undertones, it just won’t work no matter how well you blend it. However, if you are feeling rebellious and ignoring our expert advice; and insist on using a bronzer for contouring, make sure it doesn’t have an ounce of shimmer in it. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Never use bronzer with shimmer for contour

on’t use powder contours unless you’re a professional MUA. Powder has a tendency to end up in places it definitely shouldn’t... and the whole face will look like it’s covered in dust.

D

on’t use this technique for your everyday no makeupmakeup look, especially in the summers (or actually ever, during day time). Contouring is more suited if you’re going to a wedding or a late dinner party; when you want to go for a sultry glam look. It doesn’t go well with a fresh, rosy daytime look, even if you’re good at it. And quite frankly, only the Kardashians (and their army of Marios) are good at it.

STYLE SWAP Sahar Noon and Maliha Ammar

CRIMSON’S EID LAWN COLLECTION 2017

This week, Team Weekend plays dress up the freaky friday way with best friends, Sahar Noon and Maliha Ammar

may 21, 2017 | 94

Sahar Noon Sahar is an Artist, Creative Designer and Interior design consultant

Maliha Ammar Maliha grew up in DC learning western fashion and design however, her heart was always set on designing eastern wear with a touch of western. She is now the founder & CEO of Syan

Sahar ON styling Maliha:

Sahar’S style statement

My very easy going personality resonates with this aqua blue three-piece suit. I am such an ocean loving person and as soon as I saw this outfit I couldn’t resist trying it out. This beautiful outfit has those summer lovin’ blue colours and floral design details with hints of checkered black and whites. The simple waves and soft makeup give me the beachy vibe that I love so much.

Who can say no to blacks with bright pops of colours? I know I can’t! Malihas very happy go lucky nature contrasts with this bold print outfit I picked for her that consists of very solid colours like black and red. The boot cut look completes the whole piece while the silk dupatta provides harmony to the edginess. Simple curled hair from the bottom and the fronts pinned up gives Maliha the girly feel while also retaining her adventurous and fearless vibe. This is what you get when you mix daring and traditional together; a perfect mix.

Sahar’S style

Maliha’S style Floral frenzy!

Maliha ON styling Sahar; Keeping Sahar’s personal style in mind, I wanted to dress her up in something alike but different at the same time. The three –piece suit I picked for her describes her easy going mellow personality. The soft pastels and bright floral patterns on her top really created the look I was going for. The tassels were a bit different and that is what I liked about this outfit. The key to this look is the extensive tassel earrings and the nude pumps complete this picture-perfect set.

Maliha Sajjad style statement

My friends describe me as bubbly, girly and adventurous. I usually go with pleasant colors during this season and hence, I chose with the pink outfit. The contrast of soft hues with the leafy greens in the dupatta and hints of neon describes my love for trying out new things out. The softer makeup and curls show my clement nature.
