After recently falling in love with Suno Chanda Suno, we have rekindled our love for Pakistani drama serials! Word on the street is that Hum TV is all set to air a new project titled, Aangan! The drama is based on the Pak-India partition with a plot that is bound to be emotionally stirring. The part we are most excited about is the return of Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir romancing each other on screen, once again, after Yaqeen Ka Safar! The drama also reportedly stars Ahsan Khan, Mawra Hocane and Sonya Hussyn in leading roles. We just cannot wait to see what this much anticipated production has in store for us!

Book Of The Week Goodbye Freddie Mercury (Nida Akbar) Lahore is burning. General elections are right around the corner. The summer city rages with the drug-fuelled parties of the oblivious, the rich and famous, while campaign posters and rally cries dominate the airwaves. Bugsy, rock RJ and host of the nation’s top English radio show, is young and fabulous. Seeking more than wealth, fame and prestige, he performs a dangerous favour for an old friend that plunges him into the dark recesses of desi politics. Nida, a young college student desperate to escape the oppressive atmosphere of her traditional family home and her conservative college, still mourning the death of her brother, throws herself recklessly into the drug-addled arms of Omer Ali, son of the prime minister’s right-hand man. As Nida spirals into decadence and Bugsy descends into darkness, their paths cross and sparks begin to fly. Nadia Akbar’s audacious debut has all the makings of a cult novel-parties, drugs, mysteries, love triangles, political intrigue and power struggles-but its lush, sexy writing has the assuredness and precision of the most acute style of our time. Told in alternating voices and brimming with sharp observation, Goodbye Freddie Mercury hits the rocks and trails atwist.

“Is Dil Ki Aesi Ki Tesi” Who Run The World? Pakistani women keep proving time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with. Pakistan’s first all girls team from NUST won Race Tech magazine’s spirit of formula student awards this year! It’s amazing to sss women excel in fields which have traditionally been dominated by men!

After the ground breaking success of the Ramzan special drama Suno Chanda, the versatile actor Farhan Saeed is ready for a new hit serial “ Is Dil Ki Aesi Ki Tesi this” this Eid Ul Azhad with none other than Saba Qamar. Can’t wait to be blown away by the (we predict) spectacular performances!

Tajwar Chaudhry spends a day getting to know one of Pakistan’s leading actors, humanitarian and role model to many - Simi Raheal When did you know that you wanted to become an actor? Honestly the fact that I’m at actor still catches me off guard sometimes because I never thought I wanted to be an actor; it was more of a happy accident. There were many other things but this unexpected journey turned out to be a happy one When I started work in 1976, there

were no institutions that taught you the craft of acting. One just learnt how to do it on the job and I guess I’m still learning because technology is constantly evolving and running ahead, and we seem to be chasing it. I think either you are an actor or you’re not! What you learn is the craft, how to face the light, how to enunciate your lines, how to react to other actors,

control your voice and emotion. People who are A-list actors as we put it, are gifted by the Divine. Tell us a little about your journey? My journey was fun, I was a young student at NCA and was always on stage, since I class 1. Somebody saw me on stage at NCA, celebrating 100 years of the institution and scouted me. We had a 20 day long program and we were performing mime on the stage. It was a great piece written by Shoaib Hashmi. Ashfaq saab was beginning a great series ‘Ek Mohabbat Sau Afsanay’ and Nisar Hussain the great director just put me in one of them and then I did another one! Today when I think about it, I wonder how I did it! What an incredible journey it has been. I don’t think I could have learnt more about life and people from any other vocation. It is extremely gratifying to be able to learn your language, to learn and perform the work of great minds and great writers. I’ve been blessed with some really fun projects in my life that I enjoyed immensely and still do. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t do anything they aren’t enjoying, so all in all these 42 years have been a great journey and I still have more to come. Tell us about your journey into the Pakistani industry. The Pakistani entertainment industry has gone through various shades of depression, excitement, happiness and lethargy all in my 42 years of experience. In the 70s it was a very intellectual, very sophisticated media. During the Zia regime it became depressed and dark. We are still dealing with the aftermath of his depression. I believe we haven’t produced any playwrights,

poets or writers in all this while because of that darkness. So it is quite sad actually. But the entertainment industry today is extremely vibrant, it is dynamic and its evolving. The film industry is booming and it’s a great time to be an actor. You can survive and succeed in this profession. I remember when we were younger, especially the male actors, were questioned about their profession. It meant being an actor was not enough to economically sustain you. There are other elements to this industry, for example the web, it has opened up a lot of opportunities. Its a melting pot right now and in the next few years all this will be redefined. We’re just trying to figure out who we are, and its a great time to be a part of this flourishing industry. In what way do you think Cinema in Pakistan is evolving? A few years ago, there were hardly any cinema halls. I remember when I did ‘Khuda Ke Liye’, there were barely any cinemas that could run that film but we have come such a long way since. Nadeem Mandviwala is the first behind the cinema’s development; he envisioned and emphasized that films being made weren’t solely to be watched at home, you have to have a cinema hall. Anybody can make anything and it will be accepted as a film, but in the next five years the audience will decide what they want. So right now I’d say we are passing an experimental era.

As an actor, how do you plan on aiding this evolution? I’m not quite sure how to answer that. I just do my little bit, not sure that I’m helping the evolution. But yes, I teach, I try and share what I have learnt, I try and encourage the young people to join the bandwagon, I try and help the young actors; the ones who ask. my perspective is, wherever I can do something in my small way, I do it. Of all the roles you have played in the past, which one has been your favourite? Ah, my favourite role! Well in 1991 I did a serial by Asghar Nadeem Syed called “Khwaish” and I played a rag picker called Basanti. For many reasons it’s my personal favourite to date, but as I said earlier I am blessed as a character actor, I’ve played some great parts. Recently I did HUM TV’a ‘Sammi’ and I love the role I play in that. I’m currently doing one where I’m an Anglo-Indian christian woman. It’s fun if you open up to the character and then the road never ends. Do you think there is still stigma in Pakistani society when it comes to this industry? I think the stigma has now become history. There is stigma attached to women working in general. I don’t think I can answer that question properly, but if there is stigma, it is mostly to do with women working altogether.

weekend | conversation show women in the light they should have. Even today, they show women as the downtrodden, ‘Mazloom” and abused and I dont agree with that. If they show powerful women, they will always have some issue and that I have a problem with. Name a few people who inspire you. The list is humungous because I have many facets to my life. I am a master trainer in Gender Reproductive and Human Rights, Leadership and Communication. One of my favourite trainers is Qausar Khan, she works with the Aga Khan University and Hospital in Karachi. The gift of knowledge she gave to me is one of my most cherished and loved possesions. Then their are actors like Uzma Gillani, whom I look up to very much. Then of course their are literary figures, Sarmad Sehbai is a man who writes in three languages; Urdu, English and Punjabi and he is amazing so say the very least. Then of course I look up to many of my peers, my best friend who has taught me a lot. My children who have allowed me to understand young people and my husband who is a constant support. The list could go on and on.

Has your family been supportive of your career choice? Yes, my family has been extremely supportive. I come from a very enlightened family and I’m really blessed that way. With both my in laws and my family, I have been surrounded by people who have encouraged me to do the things that I like. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Of course, experimentation should be positive, the most memorable part of my journey, the diversity of my career, the novelty of it - you get to do something different every time and the learning of language, thought and ideology, to be able to play characters that are completely opposite to you and to experiment with yourself internally. There is so much to learn from people from every strata of society, you learn to accept them as people and you don’t judge them. And what would you say was the most challenging? Their are challenges everyday single day. Their are things we dont really think about and their are challenges that hinder, and stop you from being comfortable. Like the structure of the industry itself, payment issues, insecurities that take over young actors - these are challenge of another time. Yes, initially women oriented scripts were not powerful enough and did not

The Pakistani education system currently suffers from inequality in educational outcomes on a massive scale. There are significant variations in the quality of education provided from one child to the next, both between schools and within schools. This is the pervasive issue of a lack of equity literacy. To combat this challenge, United We REACH is working to combine cutting-edge technology with modern pedagogy, thereby providing an effective and scalable method of providing quality education. We provide scripted lessons to teachers through a tablet-based delivery system, allowing us to ensure that every lesson in every UWR affiliated school is taught exactly the same.. Tablet-based teaching is groundbreaking not only because it lends itself to scalability, but also because it allows close supervision of each teacher in each UWR affiliated school. It is the undivided effort and persistence of Sabahat Rafiq, the cofounder and Executive Director of United We REACH.

Abdullah! The child who won thousands of hearts Many of you would have seen the recent Zakat TV commercial of SKMCH&RC on various TV channels. The little boy in TVC was Abdullah, belonging Toba Tek singh a small town of Punjab. He is a kid with a bright face and a sparkling smile. He proved his resilience in his fight against blood cancer by defeating the deadly disease, but it was not easy. Abdullah’s father, Muhammad Ijaz shares the details of his son’s struggle to get back to the normal life. “I belong to a middle class family and do a private job to earn bread and butter for my

little family of three. Today, if someone asks me that what does life mean to me? I would reply ; Health, only health. A disease not only destroys the patient’s life, but it also ruins the life of his family.” says Abdullah’s father recalling the hard time the family has been through. “Abdullah was only four years old when it started. In the beginning, symptoms were not so clear and the thing we worried about was his weight, which was quickly dropping down. Even then, we never thought that it could be cancer. We continued his treatment

from a local hospital but there was no improvement in my son’s health and it made us all very concern. Then we took Abdullah to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore. Our decision to take him to SKMCH&RC proved to be the best for my son”. Said Mr. Ijaz. After a little pause & with tears in his eyes, he continued “At SKMCH&RC walk-in clinic in Lahore, Abdullah underwent a detailed clinical checkup, followed by some tests to diagnose his problem. All the way from home to Hospital, till the results of the report my entire family was praying to Allah for good news about his health. But the news we got was terrible; my son was diagnosed with blood cancer. I knew, with job & little resources, I could not afford the expensive treatment so it made me feel hopeless about the future of my son. I had heard that SKMCH&RC provides free cancer treatment to needy patients, but didn’t know whether it is true or not. I applied for free treatment and after a very simple interview and process Abdullah was admitted for free treatment.” says Muhammad Ijaz. Abdullah underwent chemotherapy treatment at the Hospital. It proved to be very hard for his little soul as he not only lost his hair, but also smiles within a few days. “It was very painful to see my little son in such a condition but the behavior of doctors and Hospital staff gave us strength to deal with this hard phase of our lives.” With sense of satisfaction in his eyes, he concluded, “Today Abdullah’s treatment

is complete. By the grace of Almighty and sincere efforts of doctors of SKMCH&RC he is back to life now. He has rejoined his school and plays games with his friends, as he used to before the cancer. In the time of his regular treatment, I used to think that in my limited resources, how I would be able to help this Hospital in its noble cause. Thank God, Abdullah got this opportunity to play his role in Zakat collection campaign. I hope it will help thousands of other deserving cancer patients here at Shaukat Khanum.” The story of Abdullah narrated by his father is just one example out of hundreds. Many children like Abdullah are being treated at SKMCH&RC Lahore and Peshawar with generous support of Pakistani people. As narrated by Muhammad Ijaz (Abdullah Noor’s father)
