Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. in this feature I’m going to tell everything you need to know about BLUSH CRUSH by Luscious cosmetics . it’s a weightless, ultra-blend able cream blush with a natural matte finish for the perfect pop of color on your cheeks. Yes! a cream blush. i know many of you are scared of cream blushes because you are not sure how to Apply it . so let’s get started :

1. Apply camera stick Foundation, which goes with your complexion on you face and neck and blend it well. 2. Set your foundation with camera powder. 3. Contour your face with Face contour kit 4. Shape your brows using Luscious cosmetics brow luxe tool kit or brow luxe definer pencil. 5. For eyeshadow use Luscious cosmetics precious loose metals in super nova and use its gold pigment on your eyes with help of fingers just to have a soft blended look 6. Apply incredible lash mascara. 7. For Blush take BLUSH CRUSH in Shade PASSION and it on you cheeks with fingers . its a very high pigmented product so take very less amount of it and blend it gently upwards to the temples . once you are satisfied with you desired intensity on pigment, soften the edges. 8. For lips use the same Blush Crush shade on your lips.

why do you need Cream Blush / Blush Crush:

1. If you have dry skin or if you get patches of dryness on your cheeks then cream blushes are perfect for you because if will apply powder blush on your dry skin it can enhance your dry patches and make yous kin actually dull. But with Blush Crush it isn’t going to happen because it keep your skin hydrated. he creamy formula of it gives your skin a youthful glow to your skin. 2. If you know as we age our skin tends to get drier and loses its glow. so using something creamy brings back the glow and soft finish and blush Crush is perfect for that . it gives that sot dewy look which we tend to lose when we get older 3. And if you are living in a colder climate or in winters , its great o use Blush crush because it just sits on the face and add moisture to the skin 4. But dont be afraid to use in summer as well because it has this natural matt finish which will not make you look oily at the end of the day... its texture remains the same. 5. If you are lover of high pigmented Blush then Get your blush crush right now 6. And here is a plus point, it can also be used on lips. it comes in 6 youthful shades. choose any which compliments your skin or look

Head in theclouds Travel Skardu with Sarah Cheema @whatsarawore

July 01, 2018 | 42

The Nanga Parbat: It is said that life is made up of a few moments when you’re truly enthralled and amazed by the beauty and magnitude of God. It is also said that in the fast paced life that we’ve buried ourselves into, one has to really dig deep to find these moments. I was lucky enough to experience that breath taking moment in my flight from Islamabad to Skardu. 30 minutes into takeoff and we found ourselves face to face with the might of the Nanga Parbat (The 9th highest peak in the world at 26,660 ft) with its head soaring high and peaking at us from the clouds. For those 5 minutes it was just us, the Parbat and God.

For a couple of years now, my family and I have made it a point of travelling and discovering amazing places in Pakistan and for this Eid, we chose Skardu, the Capital of Baltistan, home to the Baltis, the great peaks of the Karakoram and thousands of years of rich culture. After spending an epic week there, I not only bring back amazing memories but most importantly I carry with myself an enlightened vision of Pakistan. Our country is so amazingly beautiful full of such diverse culture and history, we just need to get out, experience it and embrace it.

Deosai: The Land of Giants I got the chance to visit the second highest plateau in the world, the Deosai. Literally meaning the land of the giants in Urdu, the name was concocted from the mystery that surrounded this place since the beginning of times as an isolated and uninhabited piece of land till the British discovered it in the 1800s. The Deosai plains boast a great magnitude of flora and fauna and is home to the Tibetan Brown bear, the Red Fox and Snow Leopards amongst many other species. As I stood in the Deosai today, a small speck surrounded by the vast treeless plateau I couldn’t help but wonder that in our mundane day to day lives, we often forget that there’s a world far greater than us waiting to be discovered. Though God is everywhere, but its in moments like these, in places such as these that He is most visible.

Realisation no.3 Simple is magic Mahvish Ahmad @mahvish.ahmad

july 01, 2018 | 46

I am a mum, an economics teacher, a photographer and apparently something what they call a blogger. I am a Lahori Karachiite so I like my biryani with lassi. I believe life is short so one should experiment with new things with a vengeance. I am a sucker for Bollywood, travelling and anything that’s sweet. I love Sidharth Malhotra and if he ever offers, I am ready to run away with him. Currently exported to Switzerland with love. We celebrated Minha’s 7th birthday here in Schaffhausen a couple of days ago and this was the first time she got to have a party with her school friends. Back in Pakistan, we would always have a little celebration at home with our parents and our own friends… which are like 8. The food as well as the humble party décor would be homemade. Believers of the fact that we don’t need to spend a lot of money to give our girls a complete, colourful and a happy childhood, F and I mutually agreed to stay away from the lavish and ostentatious birthday parties we saw

happening around us. Thankfully, our 7 year old proves that time and again that our way of raising her is not wrong. This year, however,it was my dillikhwaahishto have a party for Minha because I was happy (and relieved) to see howchildren’s birthdays are celebrated in happiest country in the world (UNDP World Happiness Index). There may be wealth but there is never a show of it, especially when it comes to the kids. To begin with, the little celebration was shared between her and her friend Isla, so it was easier for the parents in a lot of ways. We split the cost and were able to help each

other out. Both families, including the birthday girls, wore pre-existing dresses. We booked a little picnic area in a forest for the celebration and went with home-made cakes. The menu was chicken hot dogs, cucumbers, carrots, strawberries and pineapples. Yup. That’s as fancy as the dastarkhwaan gets on Swiss birthdays. Easy. Healthy. Economical. No judgements made. For entertainment we had old school games such as dancing statues, pin the tail on the donkey, a piñata and the slide and swings which were part of the venue. No diamonds shining here and there, no waiters making rounds with drinks.

home, I wonder who we are competing with. And what we are getting out of it? Are we doing all this so our kids get to befriend the ‘right’ kind of classmates or prove something to the rest of the mums? Why is our satisfaction defined by the amount of wah wahs we can get by the lavishness of our dessert table or who we are hiring to do that dessert table? With the internet, academic pressures and our kids entangled with more and more complex psychological issues, probably this is one area where we can cut ourselves some slack as parents. Perhaps, we should pause and question whether we are using the right means to achieve the end. Is extravagance the guarantee of the magical childhood that we so yearn to give to our children? Or is our attention and quality time enough to give our kids security, reassurance and a sense of completion? Studies show that when children are spoilt for choice, their happiness erodes, and they are robbed of the gift of boredom, which encourages creativity and development. So,what do we do? We say no to this culture to protect the childhood of our children. Perhaps that is the greatest gift we can give to them. And perhaps, the responsibility of creating an environment in which birthdays of small budgets are accepted falls on those who can actually afford to have the big bashes. When we came home after our party, huffing and puffing, kinda worn down by the over energetic kids and the heavy rain, Minhaexclaimed“it was the happiest day of my life”! And there. I was assured. Simple is magic and simple is the way to go indeed.

Just the parents managing the affair on their own. And guess what? We managed just fine. As the kids laughed and cried and played and fought, Faizaan said ‘kitniachi birthday hai ye’ and I agreed. The kids were HAPPYjust being themselves and running around. Isn’t that what they need? No? Pakistani kids would find that boring? Maybe that’s because it’s the kind of expectationswe’re setting for them that with every passing year, they need more and more to be satisfied. Maybe it is because of the way we, as a society, are raising them that the sand castle has lost it’scharm and only the Disney castle can put a smile across their faces. I don’t understand why there is so much pressure on mums today to plan the ‘perfect day’. Between the magic show, trampoline, 2 types of jumping castles, rides that work with coins, cotton candy man, popcorn man, a horse to ride, face painting, colouring and more (Hajmola, sir), the kids don’t even get the chance to take a go at each of the options available in the 3 odd hours they spend at a party. Why is perfection defined by the amount of money spent and the variety a birthday party offers for the guests in terms of the food, the games and the giveaways?Isn’t perfection defined by happy memories, a smiling child, a birthday cake being cut little kids singing? Why is it necessary to have an extravagant budgetthat makes a kid’s birthday party look like a mini mela/life size walima? I mean…how will we please that child on his or her actual walima if the birthdays are already this huge? When I compare Swiss birthdays with those that were happening around me back

The Reading Room Saints and Charlatans (

@MongrelBooks) Reviewed by Asmara A. Malik ( @TheDoctorReads)

july 01, 2018 | 50

Price: Rs. 700/available at all leading bookstores

T

o tell you the truth, I was a bit taken aback by the time I finished Sarim Baig’s, ‘Saints and Charlatans’: I had expected a happygo-lucky book, something light on the eyes and easy on the brain. What I got was a slim book of short-stories that came straight for my heart with a switch-blade and a smirk. At first glance, you would think that Sarim Baig’s work is a continuation of the usual Pakistani Woman, Man and Mangoes © traipsing ‘neath Mangrove © forests through the Monsoon © but the stories here are far, far from that typical label. They’re too angry, for one thing. For another, the anger here is the quiet kind, not sinister but merely watchful. It leads to a stellar tone and taut pace throughout the book even if it does leave you remorseful and pensive for the state of Pakistan and the every day horror that faces so many of it’s citizens on a daily basis. The stories have an almost O. Henry-esque devotion to characters and their circumstances, how

something as inanimate as a slum can still play a vital role in the evolution of people and their motivations. Suratwala and Rampura never actually come across as actively hostile but their sinister moulding of plot and people is as integral to each story as any action committed by either saint or charlatan. And as each story progresses further, the neat distinction between both is lost as easily as Master Ataullah’s son in the fog. Many reviewers have drawn parallels between Murakami and Baig but to me that feels inadequate-- Baig is no Murakami, his characters lack their counterpart’s empathy and sensitivity because they’re struggling to survive. Their agency is far more primal and, in some cases, more brutal than anything envisioned by Murakami. It was hard to pick a favourite story in the collection, but the ones that I kept coming back to were ‘The Third One From the Left’ and ‘Band in the Rain’. Both deal with loss and resurrection in haunting echoes of each other. Long after the book was finished, I found myself thinking about Dildar and his lost daughter, Jira in the darkness of the container. Sarim Baig’s exploration of Suratwala and Rampura seems far from over, and I look forward to following him on his journey, even if it doesn’t end well, like Fortunato following Montresor deeper into the catacombs beneath a tumultuous nation.

My ultimate dream concerning my career in the fashion industry would be to positively impact as many people as possible.

Who or what inspired you to pursue this venture? There have been a lot of factors involved in me pursuing a career in the fashion industry. Countless agencies tried to scout me across Canada, Africa and the UAE however I didn’t want to pursue anything until I finished my BioMedical Honours degree. Tell us what you like and dislike about modelling? I love the new experiences you have, the chance to travel and meet amazing and creative individuals that come with modelling. The one dislike I have about modelling is that it forces you to be so egocentric about ones appearance and personality as your career is

what you represent yourself to be. However I hope to stay my most authentic self throughout the process no matter what the demands are.

Who are your idols in the field? (local/international) I don’t specifically have an idol but I look up to YouTube fashion icons like Lydia Elise Millen and Negin Mirsalehi. They have the millennial Parisian chic style that I go for and admire. Favourite people to work with? Every single project I have worked on has been an amazing experience so I wouldn’t be able to pick.

What’s your ultimate dream? My ultimate dream concerning my career in the fashion industry would be to positively impact as many people as possible. I would like my influence and work to ingrain or bring out a sense of confidence in my followers and fans. I want to leave my own unique mark in this industry.

july 01, 2018 | 53

Tell us about your experience so far in the fashion industry. I feel the fashion industry in Pakistan is so lively and filled with so much potential. Every experience I’ve had so far has been refreshing and positive, it makes me excited to be involved in such an industry with so much energy.
