Curators of Pakistani Pavilion at the London Design Biennale
To start with, tell us about Wagging Tongues Productions and how did the idea of representing Pakistan at LDB came about? Wagging Tongues Productions (“WTP) is dedicated to realising projects in arts, design, film and performing arts to offer a platform for collaboration between Pakistan and the UK. Since establishment in 2016, WTP has produced short films and documentaries as well as staged theatre plays at London Olympia as part of the Muslim Lifestyle Show 2016, 2017, and Southbank Centre as part of the Karachi Literature Festival, Alchemy Festival 2017. It was after the success of our sold out shows we were approached by our strategic partner Suniya Qureshi with the suggestion to pitch for the London Design Biennale. Has the WTP team worked with art related proj-

The rest as they say is history. We were very impressed by their well established network and professionalism. They made the whole process seamless and it was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with them. In what way do you think art is evolving in Pakistan? Pakistan has always enjoyed great art and literature but it is only now that their tremendous work and contribution is being recognised. Artists, writers and creatives are constantly questioning and redefining the cultural identity of Pakistan. This is key to the construct of our national fabric. It nurtures the soul of a country. Our very own Biennales in Karachi and Lahore, the literary festivals - have all introduced arts and culture into the public realm. It gives an opportunity for inspiration, encouraging critical thinking and familiarity with these great avenues of self- expression, it gives the courage to have a voice and for that voice to be heard. To be able to represent Pakistan on the national stage in one of the most multi-cultural global cities is truly a privilege. Pakistani artists you look up to? We have so many masters with their own discipline, we have the avant grade that navigate the cacophony of the global art scene. It is impossible to pick one over another, they all have their place and their own strong voice. They enrich our lives with their alternative view of reality. Please also elaborate on ‘Aangan’ and its connection with this year’s theme “Emotional States”? The installation explores the concept of habituation in relation to craft making, the introspective nature of the task and the inner worlds of the artisan. The cascade of garments forming the rising helix turns into a live

ects before also? Mariam Majid, managing director of WTP has a first class degree in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts, majoring in sculpture and a Postgraduate in Filmmaking from Kingston University. However, WTP’s focus has been performing arts and film since its establishment, this is the first art/ design project it has curated. As members of the Pakistani art community, what do you hope to achieve Pakistan’s representation at LDB? Through the Pakistan Pavilion we hope to encourage the global Pakistani community’s interest in the arts, promote cultural intelligence and enrichment. We aim to present a counter narrative to the negative rhetoric, providing positive data points to reaffirm the poly centric multi-culturism of Pakistanis in the global eye. Walk us through the entire process, how did the idea came about? Why Kaarvan specifically? To represent Pakistan amongst a strong cohort of the most innovative designers from across the world we had to establish how we were going to approach design. Hence craft, the mother of design. Pakistan has a tremendous labour force, handiwork is our strength and being the 4th largest exporter of textile in the world, a concept began to take form. Translating it into design and then finally implementing the design took six months of brainstorming, sketches, maquette, consultations and going back to the drawing board we finally locked down a design. Introduction to Kaarvan Crafts Foundation came as a pleasant surprise, we were trying to identify organisations that would helps us employ female artisans, it seemed liked a gargantuan task. And there it was, a newsletter from Kaarvan in our inbox.

canvas. Film projections, inspired by the internal monologue of an artisan, display visual representations of emotional states. Responding to the movement of the viewer, the computational art forms an interactive display of words, inviting the viewer towards an introspective interpretation, evoking emotion, ascribing value to the desaturated and decontextualised garments. Where the needle between fingers makes two ends meet, the craft of the artisan transcends beyond self-expression and is firmly rooted in self-preservation. A story of emotion: attachment, pride and resilience is born. The installation aims to encourage an internal dialogue expressing the human collective experience through intrinsic associations and the global visual language. How long did it take to create the pavilion? Was it all made in Pakistan? The installation had many moving parts - the plain garments, the craft garments, the armatures, the truss structure, then the film, computational art and the sound design. It took us around 6 months to put the whole things together, beginning with the garments that were of course all handcrafted by the artisans from rural parts of Pakistan. The armatures were all handmade in the workshops of the wrought iron company, Red Line Collection, in Lahore. The film work, which incorporated visual effects, green screen, animation and good old editing was a collaboration between Wagging Tongues in London and talent from Pakistan. The computational art was developed
by Mehrbano Khattak in Rawalpindi and the sound design was created by Ahmed Nasir in Poland. There was a lot of going back and forth which eventually culminated in a rich mix of disciplines complimenting each other. Do you think Pakistan’s representation on such a mega stage will have a positive impact on how people in that part of the world look at us? It is all about familiarity and association. The more we project ourselves on global platforms as part of a global culture, the more we help eliminate the concept of the ‘other’ which comes part and parcel with dehumanisation of a people. We give very strong signals of unity through diversity and a more pluralistic message to the world about who we are and what our place is in the world. How is LDB different from other art and creative platforms? The main difference would be the approach. A specific theme is presented and countries, regions, cities or organisations all respond with their individual interpretation, it reinforces the message of diversity in the human race and reinstalls
the message that we all have our unique ways of looking at the world and yet we can come to one platform with mutual respect and appreciation. It also allows participation which is more fluid, anyone with some connection to the arts can pitch a concept, it is not restricted to architect and purely designers. We feel it adds to the rich mix. What is next for WTP after LDB 2018? The doors are always open. We have a short film, ‘A Night with Noorjehan’, in the pipeline which is in its final stages of editing. It was filmed in Lahore around the vintage cinemas near Laxmi Chowk and is a snapshot of human connection between a street child and a transgender. We also have two feature film scripts we are working on. So watch this space! Facebook: @waggingtonguesproductions Instagram: @waggingtongues Twitter: @waggingtonguesp
