Some “me time” is the only therapy I needed I am a mum, an economics teacher, Mahvish Ahmad a photographer and apparently something what they call a @mahvish.ahmad blogger. I am a Lahori Karachiite so I like my biryani with lassi. I believe life is short so one should experiment with new things with a vengeance. I am a sucker for Bollywood, travelling and anything that’s sweet. I love Sidharth Malhotra and if he ever offers, I am ready to run away with him. Currently exported to Switzerland with love.

bout 2 months ago, I landed up at the doctor’s because of various physical and mental issues. Different pains in my body and sleepless nights were making it hard for me to carry out the daily responsibilities of a mum living in a foreign land without help. The trauma of a life-threatening delivery a year ago coupled with loneliness and fatigue had left me exhausted. That day as I told the doctor my issues, it felt as if her gaze could pierce through my heart and read everything it had to say. It felt as if I was being heard and understood after a long time. She suggested some very mild

antidepressants to me, a sleeping pill for a while and physiotherapy to get rid of my pains. In addition to the medical advice, she said “Get some help. Get a baby sitter. Look for adaycare”. The impact her gaze left on me was profound. I decided to take the leap and put Bano in childcare, 2 days a week only.

After some research and a few visits, we found a place we liked for our baby. Alhamdulillah, Bano’s transition to the daycare was smooth and soon enough we got the hang of it. Tuesdays and Thursdays were like heavenly treats for me, when both kids would exit the house at 8 am. You know how they say the world is your oyster? That’s

what Schaffhausen became for me. I knew instantly what I wanted to do with my time. I wanted to do all those things I longed to do but never could because my body had permanent attachments– a stroller and a hungry/whining/pooping child in it. I joined a yoga class on Thursday mornings as well as the expat mums’ walking group. I started taking trips to Zurich to see my Pakistani friends and sometimes to just to stroll and shop….watch people, experience big city life. I dedicated a few days to writing at my favourite coffee shop with a cuppa and chocolate croissant. On one Tuesday, I joined the

some human interaction which I longed for without even realizing it. Getting to laugh with others, sharing experiences, woes and worries made me feel lighter. It gave me more confidence in my abilities to survive in a country other than Pakistan.

allowus to make our home a happier place. Plus, presenting yourself to the husband as a calm, content dosheeza rather than drawny Chucky can be a gamechanger for our marital life.

A few days ago, when I looked at the antidepressants ka pata lying on the kitchen counter before I left the house, I said to myself “I don’t need these”. And as I walked out of the house feeling really happy about this feeling of genuinely feeling happy, I realized oh my….it’s been days since I actually thought about the ICU bed! “Me time” is perhaps the only therapy I needed.

school mums to do something really special – wear Dirndls (the traditional Swiss dresses) and wander about Stein am Rhine (a beautiful little Swiss town), soaking in history and taking photos. There werea few lunches and coffee GTs here and there. I went and lay down in parks all by myself. I climbed the castle steps.

As I got the chance to have conversations with people who are not 1 or 7 years old, I realizedthere are so many others in the same boat. So many others who are living away from home, sharing the same issues that I have. If I miss the baara piece wala chicken, there are others too who miss their preferred meat cuts, feel agitated due to not knowing where the next job will be and worry about their children not learning their native language or missing out on certain religious aspects. This time to myself helped me get

So sistas with little pistas, the fact is that mums need some time out – a trip to the salon or to the mall, As the weeks passed, I started developing friendships and having a meeting friends over coffee without social life. Some days, I found myself worrying about the child throwing a fit over the broken cupcake, or running from one plan to another. just some time alone at home to I felt I could get used to this place! read a book and clean in peace. My perpetually stressed mind These little breaks can rejuvenate and physically taxed body started finding some respite. So left my muscles constantly tense. Trying to wrap up as much as I many others who are living could around the house as Bano away from home, sharing the slept and finishing the grocery same issues that I have. as quickly as possible before the biscuit in her hands finished meant I was anxious 24/7 without even a second of a break. And that can be exhausting for a mother! I mean, we cannot fully relax even when we are asleep because that ‘chaadar’ that the baby always pulls off is a constant source of stress, isn’t it?

Gali’s End was a beautiful spot for the Art Retreat. Within the timespan of a couple of good conversations, our landscape had undergone a very pleasant transformation. It was worth taking at least a few minutes to just stand outside and soak it in.

Onthe mountain top Art and Culinary Retreat

by ali hayat @artretreatpk Photo Credits: Saiyna Bashir

The Art and Culinary Retreat conducted by My Art World was one of the best summer experiences I’ve had in a long time. While it only lasted a weekend, it felt longer, and that in a beautiful way. The workshops were masterfully conducted, the retreat was meticulously organized, and the people were some of the best company you could expect. I left Gali’s End looking forward to next one, which is taking place on the 2nd of August, 2018.

Paraphernalia greeted us in our rooms, and the immediate feeling was one of excited anticipation. A blank canvas, a clean palette, and miscellaneous sparks to kindle imagination.

july 15, 2018 | 46

Ujala Khan conducted the workshop on abstract art, and she kicked things off with a presentation. This, in turn, kicked off an engaging dialogue between several of us on the nature and value of art vis-à-vis abstract expressionism.

It was a pleasure and a privilege to get to know every person who was part of the retreat. Zainab and Zara were not just organizers, they were hosts.

We painted outdoors, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Kalabagh. The weather was perfect, and while a few dark clouds did pass by later in the afternoon, it only added to the atmosphere.

weekend | Fashion

Some of us were professional architects and some had barely ever picked up a paint brush, but the vibes were mutual and Ujala kept making rounds, discussing our pieces with us, and assisting when asked.

Khadija gave us a crash course in chocolate, including tempering, casting, matching it with different flavors, preparing delectable plated desserts and chocolate garnishes. Most of all, she made it look easy.

Everyone got their canvas and found their perfect spot. The tubes of paint hopped around the yard and the balcony as they were passed between the artists, much like they did back in middle-school art class.

july 15, 2018 | 47

Chef Khadija Shafqat kept dishing out some serious eats throughout the weekend. Pictured here is Saturday’s brunch with some evidence of our first foray into the world of abstract art. That page on the side listed a few rules for us. Number nine was ‘tolerate chaos’, but it was more of an indulgence.

weekend | Fashion

We experimented with gold leaf on canvas. For a few moments, we had that Midas touch which, just like the old king himself, we struggled to apply. We did have a lot of fun with it, though.

The balcony had a beautiful view. Any lack of inspiration could be remedied with just one glance at the landscape. One painting in particular beautifully captured the lush mountains.

july 15, 2018 | 48

The last activity for the day was drip painting, which required a large amount of paint, and an even larger mess. Some of us embraced it more than others.

We departed on Sunday, but not before taking part in a collaborative piece spread across a large sheet of canvas. Everyone contributed a bit of colour and character to it, much like the retreat itself.

The end result of the class was decidedly more gastronomically relevant than the acrylic paint still covering some of our hands. Needless to say, the chocolate disappeared pretty fast.

Revival of the band Why Projects like Pepsi Battle of the Bands are Essential for Pakistan

O july 15, 2018 | 54

ur music industry is vast, popular and ever increasing. There are many talented musicians in Pakistan and they want exposure and a platform to showcase just how good they are. The Pakistan public are probably also not into listening the same kind of stuff all the time. They want something different, something quirky, something….inspiring and relatable even at times. Music has the power to change how you feel, how you talk, how you think and the mood you’re in. We’re always streaming some kind of music to get through the day and that is an irrefutable fact. It’s become a habit, and like any habit one wants to try something different while doing it. That’s where shows like Pepsi Battle of the Bands come into play. Projects like Pepsi BoB give upcoming talented musicians the experience on how shows and music itself is

recorded. Currently, most of the bands that want to make it big don’t have the relevant experience in a field like this and BoB plays that role for these bands by helping their careers grow along the way.

The most important aspect of shows like Pepsi Battle of the Bands, is the exposure. The opportunity for these young lads to perform

in front of a live audience, and in front of professionals like Fawad Khan and MeeshaShafi is exhilarating. This kind of experience and exposure helps the bands learn how to handle pressure, expectations and manage to perform fearlessly with millions of people watching. Keep in mind, the two above aspects go a long way in making a career. The winners of the competition

The most important aspect of shows like Pepsi Battle of the Bands, is the exposure. The opportunity for these young lads to perform in front of a live audience, and in front of professionals like Fawad Khan and Meesha Shafi is exhilarating.

Pepsi Battle of the Bands is broadcasted on multiple channels and this allows for heavy media exposure

Our music industry has been lacking in diversity in terms of music for a long while. We have maintained the quality but now Pakistan needs different styles

Pakistan has a plethora of talent just waiting to be picked up, and brought out to the millions of people across the globe. Shows like Pepsi Battle of the Bands go a long way in bringing that out, and with it returning again very soon… I expect to see even more unrecognized talent shine on the big stage and make our mark in the field of music. We Go AGAIN!

july 15, 2018 | 55

aren’t the only ones that are deserving of contracts. They aren’t the only ones who are offered publishing, recording or management contracts. Agents and companies keep a close eye on every participant and as was seen in the last seasonsof Pepsi Battle of the Bands, Aaroh won the competition AND Mizmaar also managed to get a professional contract giving them the Launchpad to establish their careers. Similarly, with Kashmir winning the battle last Season, Badnaam are also an example of the success that a band may achieve by just participating in this kind of a show.

for the bands as well. They are viewed, recommended and their music is shared on the strongest possible marketing tools around in Social Media ranging from twitter to snapchat to Facebook. Media plays a very important role in this rollercoaster ride of the participating bands, it’s through them that these bands and their music get the audience that their talent deserves. An example was the return of EP with Fawad Khan performing Hamesha. Although I have to say, Kashmir’s Parwana Hun is one of my absolute favorite songs and to this day, it stays in my playlist.

of music to explore. Who better to do that than the untapped potential of Pakistan’s youthful band culture? They are the ones who are most in tune with what people are nowadays listening to. They understand the audience and make music out of experimentation. Its fresh and an absolute necessity to the industry. We have young musicians trying out for different kinds of music too like the EDM which has scarcely been used in Pakistan and has untapped potential as a genre. More diversity in music types the better it is for the industry.
