What was the very first piece you created? I don’t remember exactly but one of my earliest art memories is at 9 years when my aunt (a BFA student in Balochistan University majoring in Sculpture) got my siblings and I a huge chunk of clay. We made sculptures of little animals & utensils & sold them to our own grandparents.
their ateliers. You could refer to my style as contemporary miniature painting, the pioneers of which are the iconic Imran Qureshi, Shazia Sikander & many more. My own personal technique involves What kind of a struggle to technique/ achieve a certain medium do aesthetic using you prefer to various materials, work with & for example 24 Karat why? Gold. Outside Trained as structure is a traditional important to miniature me. I use the painter, my laser-cutting technique machine dates back to to break before the 16th free from Century. My visual the typical vocabulary, however rectangular is very different shaped Wasli from what the Mughal (handmade Emperors enjoyed in paper used

for miniature painting). Reminiscent of ancient storytelling, I not only cut the Wasli into one irregular shape to compose a narrative on, but break the typical structure of a manuscript, dividing each character of the composition into individual pictorial units to be arranged piece by piece on the gallery wall. Experimentation moved me from the studio to the local markets. That is when I entered the realm of frame design with materials such as Indian Rosewood, brass, iron, aluminum and resin.
What is your ultimate dream as an artist? To explore various media & expand on my existing skill & concept as a creative individual. I am particularly interested in performing & it is my dream to include
music & film in my work one day.
Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Miniature painting is like giving birth; labourintensive, painful but eventually beautiful. But of course, I part ways with all my works of art. I have never created art to keep for myself and I would like to paint at least one HUGE miniature work of art one day when I have a place of my own!

Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work? Last summer during my show at the O Art Space, my teacher, Sir R.M. Naeem said, “buhot acha kaam hae. He has been a very strict tutor over the years and his appreciation of my visual practice made me feel on top of the world!

Where are your artworks available for sale? My work goes on display in various galleries in the form of group, two person and solo shows. I have two upcoming solo shows at Gallery Full Circle in Karachi & O Art Space in Lahore.
What themes do you generally tend to explore through your work? Physical beauty is an important feature both within my frame & outside it. My work is also a reflection of my experiences around gender roles in a brutal, male-dominated society. Women figure heavily in my paintings, who are known to me in a familial or communal capacity. I paint doll-like figures, either Burqaclad or not, to draw parallels with my own cultural practices with the veil, sometimes on but mostly off. Just like Mughal Kings in miniatures, I make ordinary girls into figures of importance by glorifying them, adorning them with 24Karat gold gilded jewels & halos. I further illuminate their existence on my canvas with borders, stars, flora & fauna. My visuals also aim to create tension, making beauty feel inaccessible with repelling, eerie elements of discomfort such as piercing expressions of the mysterious doppelgängers & an introverted demeanor of the figure. Contrary to playing the victim, I embrace feminine
beauty using it as a form of self expression, rebellion & revenge. Just like pre-historic cave painters painted animals to gain power over them, my work is my method of exercising power over those who suppress
my individuality as a female.
In what way do you think your art impacts you or society at large? My visual vocabulary is based on beauty & ornamentation while my concept relies
of positivity, productivity, fearlessness & selfexpression. Such practices promote a positive image of the country & increase opportunity here & abroad. My art specifically comments on the beauty of femininity & how incredibly blessed I am to be born a woman. Sadly, gender inequality is on the rise even today & my work is a part of the collective effort to counteract that unfortunate reality.
What is your ultimate vision as an artist? Never to be mediocre, to step out of my comfort zone, to take big risks, to be original and to eventually introduce an iconic new form of art to the world.
on feminine strength. My work, amongst many other artists’ art contributes to the progressively growing world of the Pakistani as well as the global creative scene in many ways. Art always leads to inspiration, it prepares & motivates others to pursue a career in the creative field & creates an overall environment
Who/what is your work influenced by? My mentors have always been an incredible source of inspiration. One of my biggest influences is Wardha Shabbir, who is a practicing Visual & Interactive artist & has been my mentor & close friend. I study & look at several visual references in the art world. I try & achieve aesthetic satisfaction by borrowing ornamental elements & botanical studies from old Miniature Paintings, Pre-Raphaelite compositions and Religious Iconography. Pre-conceived notions also influence my paintings as I render hair and flowers from imagination.
