“I used to love collecting Eidi and then counting it! Can you imagine? One Eidi could last for up to three months!”

February 21, 2016 | 48

Sitting in the business lounge, I couldn’t help but wonder about Humaima Malick. She has been on a roll for the past few years doing films like Dekh Magar Pyar Se, Bol, Raja Natwarlal and with projects like Arth on the way. She walked in and flashed me a big smile. We sat down and conversation began to flow effortlessly. Foha Raza (FR): In a nutshell, who is Humaima Malick? Humaima Malick (HM): In a nutshell, she is afraid. She fears losing her family. She fears losing her loved ones. She’ll stay home if it means spending time with the people who matter most to her. She’s got few friends but they are all very good ones, and she believes

FR: What about your siblings? HM: I have three older siblings who are married and live away from Pakistan. Then there’s me and two younger siblings, my star brother Feroz Khan and the youngest, Dua Malick who is a recent star, 21 years old and married with a kid.

FR: Tell us a bit about your educational background. HM: I started my career at the age of 14 with a modeling stint. Most people don’t know this but I have studied Sales & Marketing. But to be honest, I was never that interested in studying. I was always more interested in my own field. I remember I used to paint a lot and was the best at drawing. I remember all these

Art is something that, for me, require peace and patience. FR: So you were born and raised in Karachi? HM: I was born in Quetta but was raised in Karachi!

My not so sweet Valentine

february 21, 2016 | 53

by Sana Shah sunshineandco.co

weekend | lifestyle The author, affectionately referred to as Sunshine by her loved ones, recently moved to London from New York. She is enjoying settling in while discovering the city with her 8-month-old daughter in tow. Watch this space for her musings on London, sweet treats (that she shouldn’t be consuming now that the baby is no longer an excuse!), parenting, decorating, and anything really that tickles her fancy!

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you feel about the matter, Mr. M and I do not do Valentine’s Day. Mr. M feels our love knows no bounds and so the

world may not dictate to us how and when we should celebrate it. Okay, so he hasn’t ever really communicated this to me precisely, but I am positive that this is his logic deep down. He also claims we celebrate our love everyday (this he actually DOES say, but I take it with a pinch of salt). His tall claims notwithstanding, now almost four years into our marriage, I kind of find myself agreeing with him on the banality of V-Day. I don’t care about the history of Valentine’s Day and

whether it really has anything to do with love or not, I don’t care if it’s a Christian holiday we are “unknowingly” celebrating (these are the usual major arguments against V-Day)—that is not my gripe with it. To me, V-Day seemed quite sweet back in the day when it was a simpler celebration, an exchange of cutesy cards or letters doused in each other’s perfume, waking up to horrifically overpriced flowers (which you didn’t mind paying for because in a way the day also belonged to

february 21, 2016 | 54

I

am feeling the pressure to write a Valentine’s Day post. Every email I’ve received since the weekend is some V-day promotion. Every other image on my newsfeed is of either a V-day related contest, or V-day cookies or both. I even saw a Phillips ad reminding men to get their grooming in order before the big day. It showed a man with his shirt buttons popped open and a hand lingering over his chest—so presumably getting ready to shave his chest? Are men under pressure to shave their chests now? YES! There is justice in the world after all!

the rickety flower shops lining the streets and various roundabouts of Lahore and they deserved it), going out for a romantic dinner or staying in and watching a movie together, getting a box of Ferrero Rochers or a Cadbury’s Milk Tray, the standard boxed chocolate available in Lahore at one time, and then of course baking a cake for your sweetheart, nothing but a heart shaped one would do.

The cake has also been outsourced to a professional baker and must have at least two tiers. From cars to suits of lawn, from jewelry to plastic surgery, the giftable options range from the sublime to the ridiculous.

february 21, 2016 | 55

Fast-forward to now and you have extravagant, “imported” flower bouquets that are being ordered at your fancy, upscale florists. One box of chocolates

won’t do anymore, it must be an elaborately decorated basket, with an assortment of “imported” chocolates and colognes, a basket you don’t put together

yourself of course, but order from somewhere. The cake has also been outsourced to a professional baker and must have at least two tiers. From cars to suits of lawn, from jewelry to plastic surgery, the giftable options range from the sublime to the ridiculous. I don’t mean to sound like the Grinch who stole Christmas or in my case Valentine’s Day, but it’s all just a little too much. I don’t blame the retailers, the bakers, or the florists one bit because for them it is a business opportunity and nothing personal, but the people for whom it should be something personal and intimate, it is anything but anymore, and that makes me feel a little sad. And then of course there are the number of fights and the general discontent V-Day seems to leave in its wake. Disgruntled women because they didn’t get what they want, stressed out men because they just can’t understand why their wives are not happy, bitter friends envious

weekend | lifestyle

of what their friend’s fiancé did for them, and I could go on and on. So yes, V-Day… I’m not feeling it anymore. To be clear, I don’t mean to sound sanctimonious here. I love getting presents. But that is what my BIRTHDAY and ANNIVERSARY is for (And Mr. M in case you ever read this, um I do have a 30th birthday coming up this year!). Valentine’s Day was supposed to be about the expression of love, and that

can be done with a single rose, a sonnet, or a glance (okay, so I cringed a bit there myself, but you get what I mean?). So here is what I propose. If you, like me, think that V-Day preps have been outsourced the way everything has been outsourced to China, then let’s take it back. This Valentine’s Day (or week). Try something different. Get a sock (with hearts on it preferably) and a piece of paper. Divide the

paper into a few pieces. Write down things you would like to do with your sweetheart on separate pieces of paper and fold them and put them inside the sock. Take turns fishing out the folded pieces of paper, and whichever task you get is your responsibility for the day and whatever task your partner gets is his. This could range from picking a movie, to cooking dinner (and if you cook dinner every day, just swap!), to baking a cake, to going for a midnight run to Hot Spot or Salt n Pepper, and of course my absolute favorite, giving a foot massage. The

idea is to keep it simple, stress free, and to spend quality time with each other. One more thing, some of you may be inclined to choose a sappy romcom for the day, I know you may have already bought Love Actually on iTunes—save it for a girls’ night (always know your audience). After all, you want your husband to enjoy himself as well. Plus, a scary movie or a thriller allows for maximum cuddles! Okay, this is a family friendly space, and I already feel like I’m delving into PG territory, so I will leave it at that. Enjoy your weekend folks!

Books to helpyou get overyour newyear blues by Minahil Batool Sherazi

J

anuary is the month for new year resolutions and shouting ‘new year new me’ from the rooftops. If you made it through the month of Jan and stuck to your resolutions, then hat off to you. But if you’re like me and are struggling with motivation to see them through the year, here are some great self-improvement books to nudge you along the way.

HOW TO BE INTERESTING

(IN 10 SIMPLE STEPS) BY JESSICA HAGY

T

his book is funny and reads like a guide with tips on how to be interesting. There’s nothing here that is ground-breaking but Jessica Hagy’s style is fresh and she combines life lessons with cute drawings and graphs that encourage you to set foot outside of your comfort zone.

and it’s all small stuff by richard Carlson

february 21, 2016 | 60

his is a brilliant book that shows you how to de-stress and lead a calmer life in 136 short essays. If you’re a stress-head and could do with a little zen in your life, give this a read. While we try to lead calmer lives, there are times when the smallest of problems seem like insurmountable hurdles. Dr Richard Carlson highlights the importance of dealing with stressful situations in a graceful way that doesn’t leave you tearing your hair out.

HOW TO BE HAPPY (OR AT LEAST LESS SAD):

15 Minute Meals And Workouts To Keep You Lean And Healthy By Joe Wicks

A CREATIVE WORKBOOK BY LEE CRUTCHLEY

A

fter having tried the Shape, Shift, Sustain method by The Bodycoach aka Joe Wicks myself, I can say this is a good’un. Joe Wicks is a cheeky chappy from Surbiton who started making Instagram videos that showed how to make healthy meals in a few simple steps. This one IS revolutionary because Joe is all about the carbs. So if you’re a serial dieter and have been starving yourself for years, this is a good purchase that teaches you to make healthy, yummy meals and simple (not easy) HIIT workouts that can be done from home if you’re rushed for time.

We’re crushing on those culottes, and your legs. And your shoes. You’re working the white on white trend we are seeing so much of, and appreciating.

12 genius tips for braving the city’s biggest food fest

#1 Say NO to driving! Book a ride with Careem!

Lahore’s roads and traffic are a goddamn nightmare these days, so forget the car, forget the driver, and forget the hell that is finding decent parking. Book a ride with Careem and for a flat Rs.200/-, they’ll pick you up, drive you there, and land you straight at the Careem pick-up/dropoff point. Just download the Careem app, book a ride using the “HHHEats” promo code**, and roll in like total a boss!

#2 Bring An Old Blanket Or Sheet

Jilani Park is lush, green, beautifully landscaped, and the grass is literally begging you to take a seat, so forget scouring for tables and chairs. Bring along an old sheet or blanket for an impromptu picnic in the park. Carpooling is cool! Ride Careem with your buddies: save your sanity and the environment!

#3 Stow A Couple Of Plastic Bags

Hauling around empty plates and dirty utensils is a total bummer. Save yourself the grief and pop a couple of plastic bags in your purse and just collect your trash in there until you can locate an actual trash can.

#6 Rock Those Shades

The better to see all those people and goodies with, dahlings! Bringing the party home with to-go boxes

#4 Pack Wipes/ Tissues/Hand Sanitizer

Greasy hands. Smudged faces. Spills. Stained clothes. Germs. There are a million reasons this is a fab idea.

#5 Bring Your Own Takeaway Containers

Vendors at Karachi Eat weren’t offering takeaway options, so bring your own to-go boxes. Trust me, they’ll come in handy when you’re super full, but simply can’t imagine passing up on that delectable treat you’ve been eyeing all day. They’re also super useful for packing away those leftovers you refuse to part with.

#7 Wear Sunscreen

With the Lahori sun beating down, you don’t want to risk burning, so slather some

stival by Insha Bokari (Hunger & Haw Hai) sunscreen on before you head out. Stash some in your tote too, in case you need to reapply.

or flats. Your tootsies will thank you. The stroller, of course, is self-explanatory, and you’ll probably thank yourself.

#11 Bring Your Buddies Save flying solo for another adventure. Food + Friends = Primo fun.

#12 Go With A Game-Plan

Spontaneity is super, but this is not the time for that. Shortlist your must-eats and make a beeline for those hotspots first or you might miss the magic. Popular stalls usually have long queues, or worse, sell out lightning fast, so map out your route and make note of it on your phone.

Just saying. Because it’s 2016. And Instagram. And you know you want to. P.S. For a chance to get those gorgeous photos featured on Hunger & Haw Hai’s Instagram and win amazing prizes, don’t forget to use the #HHHEats hashtag! They never made it to the gym...

7 days with QYT!

“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life. Be positive, have courage and be kind. See you all next week!”

– By Qasim Yar Tiwana –

Day 1: I had a lot of fun designing a set for Valentine’s Day’s

special recording for Asim Yar Tiwana & Cybil Chowdhry’s talk show ‘Celebrity Lounge’ on PTV station. On the set I met with the gorgeous Maria Wasti who had specially come all the way from Karachi, Ali Zafar who sang beautifully and Maheen Kardar Ali who put together a fantastic fashion presentation. We all enjoyed a lot.

February 21, 2016 | 28

Day 3:

Nilofer Shahid! What can I say about her! She is an institute, the classiest woman in the fashion fraternity, my mentor and a stunning diva. She invited me at her newly renovated studio to see her latest collection. Like her previous works, her collection was exquisite and beautiful. For a moment there, I was completely spell bound!

Day 2: Had an amaz-

ing lunch with my very close friend and a true fashion icon Hassan Shehryar Yasin at our favourite restaurant, the Cosa Deli, located at Mall One. It was much needed because we both had not seen each other for a while as we had both been travelling. He told me about his latest venture; the opening of a big couture studio by the name of the HSY Mansion. Congratulations Sheru for doing it again!

Day4: I always like having tea and coffee with at my

Day 6:

This weekend came with yet another pleasant surprise. Mr. Anjum, General Manager of Faletti’s Hotel called and asked if I could meet his boss at my earliest convenience to which I happily agreed. So I went to their office assuming it would be another meeting for some event. But to my surprise, it turned out to be rather a personal meeting with Brigadier Mukhtar Ahmed who is the owner of the hotel and turned out to be a very close acquaintance of my late father. I felt really nostalgic when he spoke about so many different occasions when he had met my dad. I loved my time with Uncle Mukhtar as it brought out a lot of good old memories. I left with tears in my eyes after meeting someone who was so close to my father.

Day 5: One of the highlights of the

week was the 2-hours-long company with one of the most controversial actress of the sub continent, none other than the beautiful Meera! It so happened that she was the guest at ‘Celebrity Lounge’ on PTV with Asim Yar and Cybill. I must say that Meera’s demeanour and body language showed elegance and a graceful poise. She was concerned about how talk show hosts and journalists do not portray her accurately and usually show a twisted version of what she says. However, her ‘Celebrity Lounge’ episode was amazing and Asim & Cybill covered a lot about her career and personal life in a very professional manner. Another highlight of the show was the presence of our dear friend Hamid Latif of the famous Vidal Sasoon New York City on the set. Hamid was not only a co guest with Meera but also played a major role along with the hosts to explore various aspects of Meera’s career. She did a beautiful dance number with Hamid as well. I realised that she is an asset to our cinema industry and possesses a lot positive attributes. She left very happy because of the fact that this interview was done in a very dignified way and covered a lot of her personal and professional life for the audiences.

Day 7: Cybil Chowdhry cel-

ebrated her birthday with her closest friends at Ginsoy. We were about fifty to sixty people- all her close friends from the industry including people like Ali Azmat, Ali Zafar, Mehdi, Shahzad Raza and more. The entire affair was a lot of fun. I did the decor for Cybil’s birthday on her request.

friends’ place. It is very relaxing and totally my kind of thing! Shahzad Raza is the pioneer of styling, makeup and photography. His shoots are still considered the best of the lot. I love going to his salon to pamper myself for a manicure and a pedicure etc because his team is so welcoming and professional that one feels like coming again and again. But this time he invited me to his glamorous office for a cup of coffee and to discuss some of our upcoming joint projects. I met his talented brother Mehdi as well. As Shahzad is one of my very dear friends so we ended up talking for hours and did not realise as time flew away. Later, Shahzad and I enjoyed food directly from his home kitchen. It was a lovely time indeed.

It’s A Dream Come True

I

n the recent past, interior design has become more than just about filling up your space with relevant merchandise. It has rather become a matter of personal statement and style. People actively look to design their space such that it reflects not only their taste but give an insight into their mind and soul to the observer. This public awakening to a sense of bespoke style is not lost on those in the business. Some of them are doing an absolutely great job at this. Dolce Vita Home, of the Diamond group, are of those few who have truly gotten the changing trend, and are staying ahead of the market by catering as well to this change as it comes. The Y- block DHA flagship store in Lahore is a true representation of this understanding. They have named it as ‘luxury and sleep’ store, and one cannot help but agree with it once one enters this lifestyle heaven. The store is a design inspiration itself. It substantially speaks luxury, comfort, intelligent design, with beautiful color play. There are chandeliers hanging low from the ceiling. They have taken every single detail into account from lighting to placement of merchandise to color scheme and pattern assignment. It feels

like a rush of creativity and idea, and can be a life changing experience for those who neither want professional assistance nor have any personal experience of interior design. Furniture is obviously the most eye catching part of the shop; where every single piece from huge beds, lounges, sofas, Milano & design sofa’s from Italy, various kinds of tables, and shelves to racks, foot rests, ottomans, and settees, is state of the art in itself. The most alluring part of going to Dolce Vita Home was the considerably wide range of products even within a single product line. Whether you are looking for classic, traditional or contemporary, you have a broad list of options to choose from to match your personal style. The best

part is Dolce Vita Home’s ability to provide for a very heterogeneous mix of buyers. If you are an avid reader and a coffee lover, you have come to the right place, where you’ll find everything from the comfortable sofa, recliner to a coffee table and bookshelf of your liking. Similarly, the gamut of vanity tables runs from the classic lady-like to the It-girl kind. Dolce Vita Home, all in all, is a one stop shop for any interior design enthusiast. It offers you almost everything you may possibly need to decorate your space. It does not end here, they also have a kids’ section with special focus on their needs. Keeping kids’ safety in mind, everything is designed with soft edges and extra cushion in the beds and sofas to ensure healthy sleep time for the young ones. There is so much more to Dolce Vita Home than just putting a few pieces of furniture and accessories together, it truly is a lifestyle choice. One must see it to believe it.
