So this past week our heads were collectively and quite literally up in the stars! Can you even blame us? The Met Gala 2016 is hands down the biggest fashion event of the year that had us glued to our screens and dreaming of an alternate universe where teleportation exists! In the real world, however, we are all set to jet off to Karachi for the Bridal Couture Week Gold Edition 2016, stay tuned for all the glitz and glam to follow. 1. Being a celebrity mother, how do you balance between work and professional commitment? As with everything in life, balance is key. I learned that from an early age from my mother who was a working woman for most of her life but she never seemed stressed or out of place with things. She was always sure of herself and had her priorities straight. So, as my mother, I have my priorities with my family and work easily follows. If I have something like a tour or show and an issue comes up with my son or my mother then I cancel that professional commitment without a second thought. I honestly believe that if you have your priorities straight then you will never face an issue balancing life. 2. What does mother’s day mean to you? I think it is a great thing, an obvious thing, but a great thing to have a special day dedicated to mothers. Mothers should be celebrated every day but this holiday, like any other holiday, makes it extra special. 3. How do you think parenthood has changed from your
mother and to you being a mother? I became an entirely different person when I became a mom. I used to live life for myself, of course my family was my priority but I would make every decision for myself and live for myself. But when my son came into my life he became my nucleus. Every single thought that I have has to include him and has to think of his best interest. 4. Any fondest memories from the past for Mother’s Day? Yes, when my son first started to write in school he was 5 years old and he brought home a Mother’s Day card for me. I still hold onto that card, he has since given me a card every year with his love. It means the world to me. 5. Favorite Food that mom makes? My son’s favorite that I make is Biryani, he’s a true Desi kid, loves his chicken but he is obsessed with my Biryani. When my mother used to cook I loved her Karhai and Halwa!

She made me believe that I can do whatever I set my mind to and she supported in me in whatever decisions I have made.

6. What is the most difficult part about being a mother? I think when you’re a mom you have to constantly be thinking about your child. Every step I make has to be for his betterment and it can be a challenge to always know what is best in the long run for your child.

8. Daughters often see their mothers as their style icons, do you think your personal style statement is inspired from your mom’s persona as well? Well, our style is very different. The statement though is the same, my mother always dressed
for herself and never cared about what people thought or said and although her style was extremely simple, it was simple because she liked it that way. I, on the other hand, am very experimental but that is because I like to be. She taught me to always just be myself. 9. LC just turned 19, do you have a message/wish for that brand who is Made Of Pakistan? I love the way LC loves Pakistan. We must continue this passion for our country and spread this love throughout the nation.
10. Any fondest memory with Leisure Club I remember a few years back, me and my then 5 year old son were looking everywhere for good quality/trendy play clothes. We hunted all over Lahore for his size until we realised we had missed the most obvious of places, LC, as soon as we walked in we knew that we really didn’t need to hunt any further. I of course had to pick up a few things for myself, afterwards we stopped at our favorite juice shop and went home with bags full great quality outfits. Haven’t stopped coming back since! 11. Any inspirational words on Leisure Club and its role
in promoting Pakistani talent only (be it artists, models or photographers) throughout its 19 years of journey. Just keep it up, if we don’t cherish our talent then it will just continue to fade away. It is high time that we stop the talent of our country from dying and put life back into our nation. My upcoming album is featuring instruments that are native to Pakistan but don’t have any makers left and languages that have been neglected by our masses. We can’t neglect Pakistan anymore, we need to bring it to glory.

TRAVEL & CAKE Hi, I’m Zainab, and I’m going to use this space to share my favourite spots in Iran. While I was there, I got the chance to explore and experience the diverse culture of the country like a local, so here’s my scoop!

H
aving had my fair share of travels across Europe, North America and the Middle East, by far the most unforgettable journey I have ever made has been my trip to Iran. Packed not only with natural beauty- from the Al-Borz mountains to the Caspian sea- as the cradle of culture and civilization it should make the top of the list of all those interested in the richness of history, culture, literature and art.
For me this trip was both anenriching and spiritual experience: in a country where I felt like I was constantly in the presence of God and God loving people.First stop was Mashhad, a city located in the north of Iran.It is known as the city of Firdausi (the poet of Shahnameh), but it is most famous for the shrine and tomb of Imam Reza- a descendent of the Holy Prophet PBUH and the eighth of the twelve Imams of Islam- with millions of pilgrims trickling in to pay their respects each year.
The shrine complex is surrounded by the most magical straightout-of-the-Arabian Nights market place where you can find jewelry, ceramics, dried fruit and nut shops, spice shops (where you might want to stock up on Mashhadi saffron) and the most delicious and milky ice cream. The bazaars are decorated with posters of the portraits of Imam Reza and Imam Hussain (kind of Byzantinian icon-like in their depiction), which is something we don’t see here in Pakistan. So from the moment I stepped out of the hotel room, I was already “feeling it”; an inexplicable uplifting of the soul. The mosque and shrine compound are huge with intricate kaashikari (mosaic tile work) in the
weekend | travel lapis and turquoise colours Persia is known for and this sets the tone for the rest of the shrines and mosques throughout Iran. There is almost too much to see in Shiraz! A short one and a half hour flight from Mashhad, it is a city known for its rich literary heritage and as the hometown and final resting place of two of Iran’s most revered mystics and poets Hafez and Sa’adi. Have your faal taken out by a parrot outside the tomb of Hafez (it is generally creepily accurate) or make a wish at a wishing well inside the tomb of Sa’adi. There are other historical places worth visiting including the Erum garden, the Vakil Complex, and the citadel of Karim Khan (famous for
its breathtaking stain glass windows). But the main surprise lies some 60 kilometers northeast of Shiraz: the ruins of Persepolis! Literally meaning “the Persian city,” also known asTakht e Jamshed, it was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550–330 BC). It consists of palaces and terraces, the construction of which began with Cyrus the Great but finished during the reign of Darius I. Later it was looted and set on fire by the armies of Alexander the Great and most of the buildings were destroyed but the magnificent double staircase, thecarved lime stone columns of the Gate of All Nations and a few colossal structures, that could be throne rooms or altars, remain intact. Wall reliefs showing the standard of Cyrus the Great and depicting scenes of royal splendor with Babylonian text will remind

you of ancient Egyptand a short hike from the main terrace on a low hill are the tombs of Artaxerxes I and II. There are more burial chambers in the cliffs at Naqsh e Rostam- so named because of the ancient rock reliefs. Remember Leonidas and his horde of 300 Spartans who combated the infamous Xerxes? His tomb is also here, also allegedly that of Alexander. This to be honest was the highlight of my journey, not to discount the fun I had yet to have. On the way to Esfahan we stopped by the city of Kashan with its beautiful houses and their sunken courtyards. The Tabatabaei house is a good example of traditional Persian residential architecture with its four courtyards, wall paintings and elegant stained glass windows and features such as beruni and andruni. They weren’t exaggerating when they nicknamed Esfahan nisf e jehan. The Naqsh e Jehan square consists of two mosques, a madrasah, a maidaan and the grand bazaar surrounded by buildings from the Safavid era. The Shah mosque is by far the most beautiful structure here.
The maidaan in the center has buggy rides available to take you around the perimeter of the area. It is a city of the world’s oldest atashgah(Zoroastrian fire temple) of bridges and palaces and architectural wonders such as the Shaking Minarets.The Khaju bridge across the Zayandeh River is considered to be the finest in the province. Chehel sotoun (the Forty Columns Palace) is also a spectacle to behold with beautiful fresco paintings and ceramics. The carpet shops in Esfahan are world famous! The shops themselves are worth looking at even if you are not shopping for carpets. The capital city of Tehran has several tourist attractions including palaces, parks and the National Museum of Iran where you can find ancient artifacts from all around Iran and a replica of the Peacock Throne on display one day of the week (I also saw my first preserved ancient dismembered leg here). The Sa’adabad Complex and the Golestan Palace from the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties are a must visit. Sa’adabad Complex is now converted into museums with cars, clothes and statues of Persian mythological figures on display. I concluded my journey in Ramsar a city on the coast of the Caspian Sea and bordering on Azerbaijan. The Caspian Sea is a landlocked sea in the middle of the Al Borz Mountains. Known as the derya e khizr in Persian, it is thought to be the place where Alexander the Great met Hazrat Khizr. I have seen so much in Iran, but this is probably just the tip of the iceberg. My visit has left me hungry for more: Tabriz here I come! Postscript: Wearing a head scarf should not be a problem, after all when in Rome do as the Romans do!

nstagram came on the ‘scene’ at just the right time when social media users, myself included, were getting irritated by Facebook and its constantly changing settings and layout. The photo-sharing social media platform boasts a staggering 400 million users currently since September 2015. That is an incredible amount of people and by the time you’re reading this, I wouldn’t be surprised if the number has increased. The beauty of Instagram is that aside from following friends and people you know, you can also follow celebrities, artists or anyone you want to if their accounts are public (if private, you can always send a request to follow). The thing I love about Instagram though is that it fuels my creativity which is why my ‘following’ list currently sits at 1300+ people. The list features a variety of people; writers, celebrities like the Kardashians, artists and Instagram-stars. What people share can range from the very mundane, like pictures of the sky or sushi (I’ve been guilty of both) to amazing flatlays that would satisfy anyone’s OCD, to sometimes cute, sometimes annoying (it’s a thin line) pet pictures. Here are some of the best Instagram accounts you need to follow—go go go! @kimkardashian: amidst all the pouting selfies and burgeoning baby bumps/cleavage shots, there are adorable ones of her children so that makes it okay to follow her. Right?

leep improves effects on how you feel; however its significance goes way past simply boosting your inclination or banishing under-eye circles. Sufficient sleep is part of a healthy life and we simply cannot function without adequate slumber at all. Here are a few ways how sleep affects our lives and the importance of a good night’s sleep. “If you are trying to learn something, whether it’s physical or mental, you learn it to a certain point with practice; but something happens while you sleep that makes you learn it better,” says Dr. Rapoport. In other words, our minds are very busy when we sleep and help us strengthen memories or practice out that day’s duties. Other than memory, too less sleep also affects your lifespan. Dr Raymonde Jean says, “Many things that we take for granted are affected by sleep. If you sleep better, you can certainly live better. It’s pretty clear.” Study shows more deaths occur in people if they get less than five hours of sleep.
Lack of sleep also contributes to an increase in inflammation; inflammation is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging. Doctors also found out that heart attack inducing reactants were higher in the people who got less than six hours of snooze. Got a work campaign or a college essay or an art assignment due? Well, adequate amount of slumber is known to spur creativity and make you feel fresher and more focused. “In addition to consolidating memories, or making them stronger, your brain appears to reorganize and restructure them, which may result in more creativity as well.” “If you’re trying to meet a deadline, you’re willing to sacrifice sleep, but it’s severe and reoccurring sleep deprivation that clearly impairs learning,” says Dr. Rapaport who talks about how sleep affects your grades. Studies show that university students who sacrificed too much sleep ended up scoring less than students who slept well. A lot of children are suffering from disordered breathing problems just because of lack of sleep.
Your weight and fitness also depend on your sleep; if you’re starting a diet, you might want to adopt early bedtime habits as well. You naturally feel hungrier when you’re sleepless, since sleep and metabolism are controlled by the same part of your brain. So rest well, if you’re trying to get fit. am back in London, jet lagged out of my mind, and already gearing up for another short trip—this time to New York City, my favorite city in the world after Lahore. Except, I have to admit, I’m so exhausted after traveling with Baby N that I am sadly not looking forward to flying so soon once again. Oh well! You gotta do what you gotta do! When I was 15 years old I attended a camp called Seeds of Peace in Otisfield, Maine. Every night, after a full day at camp and just before going to bed, my bunkmates and I would gather around, and our counselor would make us go over the highs and lows of the day. This activity was called “Thorns and Roses”. I thought it would be fun to go over my “thorns and roses” from this trip with all of you. I’ll start with a thorn and end with a rose so that we always end on a positive note!
So first thorn…
My first weekend home; the Gulshan Park bomb blast happened. When I saw images of the carnage and the victims on TV I truly realized how desensitized we have become to bloodshed and the loss of lives because of the frequency with which it happens in our country. I was deeply saddened by this incident. Later, I also learnt that a boy who worked at a salon I frequented lost his life in the blast that night. I felt very helpless and sad in that moment, and as a mother, very scared.

I think one of the biggest highlights of my trip this time was meeting my friend ST after his being in captivity for almost five years. Seeing him alive and well, and brimming with positivity even after the gruesome ordeal he had been through, made me a bit more grateful for all that I have in my life and that I take for granted. He has such an amazing, miraculous story to share and I can’t wait for others to hear it and to be touched by it as I was. Just really affirms your belief in God and that even in the darkest of times there is hope.
Baby N got her first big booboo this trip. So, Baby N has started waddling about and doesn’t have the best of balance at the moment. She ended up falling flat on her face and got a bruise the size of an orange on her forehead. I naturally flipped out when I saw it and was ready to rush to the ER but thankfully there was no need and a bit of ice and some cuddles did the trick. Earlier that day I had posted a picture of hers on my Instagram that got quite a bit of attention. Naturally the Pakistani in me came out in full form at that moment, and I was convinced that she had been a victim of the dreaded “nazr” and so I promptly deleted this picture. I don’t know guys! The sane, educated, rational part of me likes to pay no attention to such superstitions, but sometimes the timing is just so eerie that I can’t help but succumb to such fears.

I feel like my daughter really grew up this trip. Being around her cousins especially helped her grow socially. By the end of the trip she was more talkative (though still not making sense), sturdier, more active and more interactive with others. She has also developed quite a taste for “neembupani” and chai—both of which confirm her status as a true Pakistani baby. Well the Panama Leaks happened and though I make it a point not to get too political on my blog, I was disturbed with some of the reactions to this event, or perhaps lack of reaction is more suitable. But it is not the politicians I wish to comment on today. Corruption, nepotism, manipulation are all factors we have come to accept in our government. But before this trip I had always felt that the people of Pakistan were different. I felt that at least as a people we had a strong value system, with a reputation of being philanthropic and stepping in and providing services that our government was too lazy or inept to deliver on. I thought as a people we valued truth and justice. I don’t really feel that way anymore. I think we have allowed corruption in our state for so long that it has seeped in to the fabric of our society. From your local grocer to your big business tycoons, all are guilty of it at some point and on some level. Value systems have eroded. There was a time when people were very careful about whom they let in to their homes and into their lives. Growing up, I remember my parents carefully vetted all my friends and their parents—it was important to them that we shared common values. I never understood it back then, but now I have come to value it. However, this kind of thinking is considered very passé in Pakistan now. Now money, power and influence are the barometers by which you are judged as being worthy of an invitation to somebody’s home.

Call me naïve or idealistic but when I woke up to the news of General Raheel Sharif having sacked a number of Generals and officers in the army for corruption, I was ecstatic. Power move or not, I think it was a breath of fresh air in a system and a country that was choking on lies and corruption. I mean at least somebody in the country is doing their job!

I only had brain (maghaz) once. Yes, I probably lost most of you on this one, but I am a huge fan of tak a tak and maghaz etc and this trip I realized that I no longer have the iron resistance of a Lahori when it comes to bacteria commonly found in food served in Pakistani restaurants. Most of the trip I had to seriously curb some of my whims and temptations in the culinary department.

On the other hand, I had some awesome desserts! The dessert scene in Lahore is on another level at the moment. New entrant, Dessert Directory in DHA has definitely stolen my heart. If you end up going, do not leave without their tiramisu, their brownie and the cookie dough cheesecake. Actually everything is too good! I loved it. Also, Ganache is killing it in the cakes department. My friends D and S recommended their Strawberry and Vanilla cake, which I promptly ordered for my younger sister’s birthday and then singlehandedly demolished. The most moist, light and fluffy cake you will have ever had. Word of warning: it is so light that it can’t take the weight of all the fluffy cream and strawberries and so is a bit messy to eat! Of course, the Nando’s and Kitchen Cuisine chocolate fudge cakes are staples for me when I visit home. I also tried those Awesamosa’s everybody was raving about. I have to say I did enjoy them in the moment, but wasn’t left craving for more. Do you know what I mean? Great initiative though and would love to try new flavours next time I’m in town. All this talk of dessert has me craving for more, which is just great since I was supposed to be on a post- Lahore detox. Lucky for me Mr. M was in Vienna for a meeting the day we got back and ended up bringing back some delicious Sachertorte with him for me! Either he has totally given up on my eating healthy, or he was really missing me! I like to think it’s the latter. Either way, I’m going to get me some cake and then maybe catch up on GoT. That’s all from me folks!
