mArinA on The royAl viCToriA DoCK After lunch and a quick sitdown, why not head outside to the Royal Victoria Dock, where there is plenty more to see. The marina will feature some of the largest exhibitor boats in production which cannot physically fit through the doors of the E XCEL building, as well as a dedicated outside exhibition space featuring a number of inland craft. As with last year, manufacturers from the inland waterway industry will be showcasing both narrow and wide-beam boats at the west end of the dock.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Central London When it comes to scratching that retail itch, most visitors to London will divide their time between Oxford St and Regent St. Between Oxford Circus and Bond Street tube stops, you can take advantage of the best high street shopping in the world. Stand outs include, Selfridges, Primark, Topshop/Topman, Uniqlo, American Apparel & Urban Outfitters. Down Regent St new meets old with British style icons Aquascutum, Church’s and Hacket cosying up next to American counterparts Brooks Brothers and Bannana Republic. On Bond St you’ll find the highest of high-end fashion with designers like Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, YSL, Gucci, Armani and Salvatore Ferragamo. There are also priceless jewels at Tiffany&Co, De Beers and Cartier, as well as ‘affordable fashion’ at Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Mulberry.

Luxury staples Harrods and Harvey Nichols are traditional onestop shopping for London’s glitterati. The grand-old-dames of London fashion still stock unique luxury brands that you can’t find anywhere else in the city. The painfully trendy Dover Street Market consists of a series of stores hosting some of the most exciting and innovative designers of the moment including Junya Watanabe, Raf Simmons, Thom Browne and Comme des Garçons. Liberty dominates the northern end of Carnaby Street selling luxury clothing, homeware and beauty products. There are great vintage finds to be had in adjoining Kingly Court and on neighbouring Newburgh Street. Luxury department store Fortnum and Mason has been dazzling shoppers since 1707.

12

In Covent Garden high-street giants Urban Outfitters and Diesel sit next to amazing vintage stores like Rokit and Mint . A walk down Monmouth St, Earlham St , or the reinvigorated Long Acre reveals some of the best shopping in the city.

The National Gallery’s permanent free collection contains some of the best art in the world from masters like Monet, Rembrandt and Van Gogh.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

The National Gallery hosts The Sacred Made Real
Spanish Painting and Sculpture 1600 - 1700 from 21 October - 24 January. The exhibition will be the first to explicitly explore the relationship between the painting and sculpture of 17th century Spanish realism. Although their subject matter was often religious, the artists of this timeworked painstakingly to creating arrestingly life-like re-creations of the saints in wood and oil.

Next door the National Portrait Gallery is showing Beatles to Bowie: the 60s exposed from 15 October. The exhibition will explore the lives of pop personalities that helped to shape swinging London. Expect never before seen shots of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Who as well as early portraits of singers such as Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Marianne Faithful, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie. The Royal Academy on Piccadilly is displaying a major new exhibition by Turner Prize winning sculptor Anish Kapoor. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be the monumental Svayambh, tailored to the architecture of the Royal Academy’s Main Galleries, reflecting Kapoor’s exploration of sculptural works that actively participate in their own formation. At The British Museum Moctezuma: AztecRuler will present masterpieces of Aztec culture including the impressive stone monument known as the Teocalli of Sacred Warfare. This fascinating exhibition runs until 24 January.

Detailing inspirational stories of exploration, discovery and endeavour from Britain’s seafaring past, the National Maritime Museum tells of the continuing effects the oceans have on the world today.

TULLETT PREBON LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

THE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM

Discover the courage shown by Franklin on his tragic polar expedition in Explorers, or see the original paintings, diaries and instruments from Captain Cook’s famous Pacific voyages in Oceans of Discovery. See Nelson’s bulletpierced coat from his final, fatal battle off Cape Trafalgar in Maritime London and trace three centuries of connections and encounters across the Atlantic in Atlantic Worlds. Two other great museums are also within walking distance:

ROYAL OBSERVATORY, GREENWICH Built for the purpose of finding longitude at sea, this is the home of Greenwich Mean Time and the famous Prime Meridian of the World - 0º, 0’, 0” as well as London’s only planetarium which provides a magnificent introduction to the mysteries and wonders of the night sky.

QUEEN’S HOUSE, GREENWICH. Completed around 1638, Inigo Jones’ ‘house of delight’ introduced England to the beauty of Palladian architecture. The Queen’s House is now the principle showcase for the National Maritime Museum’s world-class collection of fine art. Admission free. There may be charges for some special events, planetarium shows and exhibitions. Opening times: Daily 10.00 – 17.00. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Visit www.nmm.ac.uk for further details

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Alcaidesa’s Marina in the South of Spain Located in a privileged setting, in the South of Spain in the Bay of Algeciras, next to the Rock of Gibraltar and in front of the Congress Center of La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz), Alcaidesa Marina is being constructed and berths will be delivered in March 2010. Alcaidesa´s marina, in La Linea de la Concepción, will have a major impact on the area’s development. It’s divided into 3 main areas: an area for sport and pleasure boats, a commercial marina with a slipway and dry dock, and lastly a commercial and recreational area. When the development is complete the marina will have a land surface area of 134,255 m2 and a sheltered water sheet of 139,760 m2 which will accommodate 624 berths for crafts ranging from 8 to 50 m in length, and with capacity for 200 crafts of various sizes in the dry dock. It has a privileged location as it’s a five minute walk from Gibraltar airport and a one hour drive by car from international airports such as Malaga and Jerez. The residential, Alcaidesa is only 15 minutes by car from the Marina and has two superb golf courses, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the North of Africa. The marina – located in a prime setting just a few metres from the centre of La Linea, on the Algeciras Bay – will include a large commercial and restaurant area, thus ensuring an attractive and lively atmosphere for the marina. For crafts up to 15 metres of length we will provide fingers, pilots and floating pontoons. For pontoon number 15 (with bigger berths, 18, 25, 30, 40 and 50 metres), the berths are on a fixed, concrete pontoon which can be driven on by vehicles. All of the pontoons can be accessed independently via locking systems activated by proximity cards to allow easy access for users, and at the same time to guarantee the security of the boats. Security has been taken very seriously, as you will be able to see from the video surveillance cameras which are being installed. This project will be a reference not only in Andalusia but also at national and international level, as we target all markets, especially being located at the doors of Europe thanks to the good communications infrastructure and proximity to Gibraltar. For berth sales at very competitive prices, from 8 to 50 meters, please visit: www.marinaalcaidesa.com

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

West London Made famous by Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in Notting Hill, Portobello Road Market is one of London’s real highlights. Open on Friday & Saturday from 7am to 6pm, it is undoubtedly one of the best places to pick out a present for a loved one, even if it’s yourself. The best thing to do is get off the tube at Notting Hill Gate and head north, down the hill towards Ladbroke Grove. The first thing you’ll come across is the antiques market, what Portobello Road used to be known for, but confusingly lots of new items are sold here as well so be sure to check that the Georgian brooch you’re picking up really is a Georgian brooch.

Next, head straight to Elgin Crescent where you’ll find rails and rails of designer clothing and accessories. You’ll see vintage Vivienne Westwood right next to the latest clutches, open toes and bandage dresses from some hip young thing. Westfield London is the largest in-town shopping centre in

Europe. A destination in itself, this retail mecca boasts more than 265 stores ranging from Topshop to Tiffany&Co. There’s also a bevy of cafés and restaurants as well as a spa. The Village at Westfield is a must see for label hounds, being home to Prada, Mui Mui, Twenty 8 Twelve, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Kensington High Street is one of the City’s most user-friendly shopping areas. The Arcade houses an extensive Whole Food Market offering delicacies of every kind. There’s also the ultra-hip Urban Outfitters. As well as the market there are a number of shops down Portobello Road. You can find interesting t-shirts and accessories at Savage where you can fly the flag for your favourite borough with specially-designed area T’s and hoods. Nearby you’ll also find American Apparel, who ethically manufacture and market all their clothes from a single building in downtown Los Angeles. 20

For something a little different try Andea who sell handmade silver jewellery from Mexico.

can always be relied on to provide interesting and unique exhibits. The V&A has many excellent free exhibits like their latest project, Objects of Luxury: French porcelain of the eighteenth century which celebrates one of the most exciting discoveries of the 18th century in this display of ‘white gold’ porcelain. Their major exhibtion of the season Maharaja: the Splendour of India’s Royal Courts will explore the extraordinary culture of princely India until 17 January. The exhibits will include both Indian and Western works from the last 300 years, featuring paintings, photography, textiles and dress, jewellery, and furniture.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

The Victoria & Albert Museum

The Natural History Museum’s Darwin Centre is designed to

aid our understanding of the planet and our place within it. The Centre contains an enormous eight-storey concrete cocoon housing about 17 million insects and three million plants. Of course the museum also contains famous fossils like T - Rex as well as a myriad of eduactional pursuits to keep young ones entertained. If trawling through the museums, galleries and shops isn’t your thing, a trip to Princess Diana’s former home Kensington Palace may be in order. The palatial gardens in the Royal grounds are resplendent at any time of the year.

Just north of Oxford St, Marylebone has a distinct village feel about it that seems at odds with its close proximity to the city centre. The famous Conran store at the northern end of Marylebone High Street sells all manner of luxury home fittings and furnishings. L’Artisan Parfumeur (Marylebone High St, Map 2 D6) are well known for their excellent service and beautiful fragrances. Daniela Besso, Mimco and KJ’s Laundry are all must visits for women with a passion for boutique clothing.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

East London Along Brick Lane boutiques like Rokit, Luna & Curious and The Laden showroom provide the best ‘per square foot shopping’ in London. Just off ‘the Lane’ Cheshire St is home to not only London’s most famous vintage store Beyond Retro, but also a host of gorgeous homeware and fashion boutiques like Dragana Perisic, Mar Mar Co and Labour & Wait. Of course with this being the East End you can buy plimsoles next door for £5! If you’re in the area on Sundays treat yourself to some of the coolest markets in London. Spitalfields is equal parts food emporium, vintage wahrehouse, and designer catwalk. We’re big fans of the exquisite bags and jackets by Kirk Mark. Just down Hanbury St you’ll find Up Market. Despite a recent surge in popularity real bargains can be found among the racks of vintage gear and designer T’s. Our favourite of the young designers plying their trade here are the aptly named We [Heart] Brick Lane who’s amazing £10 T-shirts would go for three times that in Covent Garden. If you cross over through the trendy Truman Brewery you’ll see the food stalls that mark the entrance to Back Market, a slightly less packed and some would say more eclectic version of its big brother Up Market. On Commercial St you’ll find the original All Saints clothes store. A bastion of youth fashion over the past ten years, All Saints are recognised the world over as leading lights in men’s and women’s clothing. Over in Shoreditch ditch skinny jeans and vintage T’s for made to measure 3-piece suits and elegant dresses by Chloe and Rick Owens at START . Around Bank Station you’ll find exclusive brands like hyper masculine fashion favourites Brooks Brothers and Church’s, as well as John Lobb. You’ll also find Louis Vuitton, Hermes and a whole host of traditional tailors.

On Hoxton Square the White Cube gallery has earned a reputation as one of the UK’s top art venues after championing the Brit-Art explosion of the mid 1990s. And one of that era’s key players Damien Hirst returns to his artistic roots in a special showcase beginning November 25.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

The Barbican Centre is one of the most interesting cultural spaces in the city. The ambitious development regularly hosts the brightest minds from the world of theatre, film, music and dance.

The Tea Building sits right at the heart of Shoreditch and is

both an arts haven and social scene-stealer. Its Hales gallery is a showcase for the area’s many artists and is open wednesday - saturday, 11am-6pm. The newly-renovated Whitechapel Gallery is once again London’s most exciting art space. London-based Polish artist Goshka Macuga reclaimed a key part of Whitechapel Gallery’s history with her presentation The Nature of the Beast. The installation focusses on the presentation of Picasso’s Guernica to the gallery in 1939. Macuga uses a Nelson Rockefeller-comissioned tapestry of the Picasso masterpiece as the centre piece of this stunning meditation on war and loss. Stolen Space is the seven-year-old art collective dedicated to

bringing new and exciting talent to the fore. Nearby you’ll also find the Brick Lane Gallery which amongst other things sells original works by Banksy. The Arcola Theatre is part of the burgeoning arts scene developing in Stoke Newington as is the famous Hackney Empire.

South London Ever wondered where WAGS learn to max out credit cards and send back champagne? Chelsea boasts some of London’s best high-end shopping and is the preferred hunting ground for the city’s fashion stalking big cats. The famous Sloane Street connects Chelsea with Knightsbridge and as you’d expect, between the two you’ll find brands like Chloe, Prada, Fendi, Hackett, Chanel, Armani, Jimmy Choo and Todds. The King’s Road is a one-stop destination for high street brands and stand out boutiques. Diesel, LK Bennett and Heals compete for space alongside Hugo Boss, Gieves & Hawkes as well as super brands like Bamford & Sons and Coccinelle.

Leading back into the town on Old Brompton Road you can find an assortment of designer stores like Ralph Lauren and Swarovski along with high street favourites like Uniqlo and Zara. The South Bank isn’t alsways noted for its retail opportunities, but Gabriel’s Wharf has great designers specialising in artisan wools and cottons. Our favourites are aei:kei, for fashion, Bodo Sperlein Miranda Watkins, Elf for design and Skylark for art. The OXO Tower is also a sure thing when it comes to picking up art and clothing that you won’t find anywhere else. We recommend Candy Anthony for women’s evening wear or John Freeman for stunning photography.

The Southbank Centre, is arguably the home of the London

culture scene. The Hayward Gallery is the best place to see visual artists who aren’t afraid to push the envelope.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

On the South Bank of the Thames, The National Theatre stands tall as a reminder of Britain’s amazing theatre tradition. Founded by Sir Laurence Olivier in 1963 the theatre has seen some of the most famous actors in the world grace its famous stage.

Next door, the Royal Festival Hall hosts the world’s best musicians as well as regular visits from the London philharmonic orchestra. Just along the water the British Film Institute shows classic flicks and modern masterpieces. Borough Market is Jamie Oliver’s favourite place to pick up

tasty treats and amazing produce, if you spend 10 minutes there you’ll see why. Stop by, with an empty stomach, on Thursdays to avoid crowds. Down in Chelsea The Royal Court Theatre hosts cutting edge productions often with big name actors rubbing shoulders alongside rising stars. Recent months have seen wunderkind writer Polly Stenham build on the success of That Face with Tusk Tusk. While star of Little Voice, Jane Horrocks plays to rave reviews in Aunt Dan and Lemon. The Saatchi Gallery on Duke of York’s Square is now the biggest free contemporary art space in the world. Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture focusses on contemporary American artists and how they have taken on the multifarious strands of their inheritance to produce exciting new works. Runs from 3 June.

Central London Restaurants Nothing beats the buzz of the bustling metropolis pre or post theatre. There are just so many options. Even Londoners can feel overwhelemed surveying the culinary delights from hundreds of nations. Home to some of the world’s best restaurants as well as value for money hidden gems. The West End, Soho and Covent Garden contain all that’s great about dining in London.

Spacca napoli £29

SOHO

Every Italian in London knows about this place. The pizzas here are all under £10 and taste twice as good as popular nearby chains. We keep vowing to try a new flavour but always end up getting a Sarracino - fresh sausage, aubergine and smoked mozzarella. Excellent pastas and grills are also available.

Freephone: 0808 1394862 Map 4 D7

Hibiscus £83

MAYFAIR

Hibiscus has two Michelin stars and perfectly encapsulates London’s new outlook on progressive Anglo-Gallic cuisine. Chef Claude Bosi has created a menu of such inventiveness and creativity that even the most hard bitten foodies have conceded his genius. Our button mushroom stuffed dover sole was possibly the most sublime piece of fish we’ve eaten in this city.

Freephone: 0808 1394866 Map 4 E6

J SHEEKEY £63

COVENT GARDEN

One of London’s premiere restaurants. The champagne and shellfish side of things can put a dent in your back pocket, but bargains like their famous fish pie (£13.50) help keep costs down while you soak up one of London’s most atmospheric dining rooms.

Freephone: 0808 1394806 Map 4 E7

ROSSOPOMODORO £33 COVENT GARDEN You can’t go wrong at this smarter than the average chain. All the ingredients - including the water - are sourced directly from Naples. We’re big fans of Rosso’s pizzas. Hearty and simple, the Neapolitan staple really does taste better in the hands of true professionals.

The Ivy £56

COVENT GARDEN

Those who tell you The Ivy is overrated have obviously never eaten there. Still the table that everyone wants pre- or post-theatre, you can go all out with caviar and Bannockburn rib steak, or take the Guy Ritchie approach and opt for shepherds pie and bang bang chicken. If it’s the experience rather than the food you’re after, then head in for lunch. You’re just as likely to spot a celeb.

HOLBORN

This foodie heaven spoils diners with its sumptuous menu and a chic, sophisticated dining room. Celebrity Head Chef Jun Tanaka regularly dishes out some of the best meals we’ve tasted in the area. Expect beautiful presentation, curious food pairing and attentive staff. Wine lovers will fall for the cool wine cellar that punctuates the centre of the restaurant. Excellent sommelier to boot.

West London Restaurants Exclusive, inspiring and quintessentially London, many would argue the best is still in the West. From Hyde Park to Shepherd’s Bush this is where London’s real wealth have put down their roots.

Assaggi £59

Notting hill An unassuming location, intimate decor and some of the best Italian food in the capital make up the 11 table dining room at Assaggi. Booking here is essential for any night of the week. Prices vary from £48 for milk fed lamb (feeds 2-3) to £14 for the delicious buffalo ricotta & Spinach ravioli with sage & lemon butter. Our favourite dish is the tagliolini with crab meat

There’s many a west London local who would kill us for telling you that The Oak is one of the best neighbourhood eateries around. High on quality, low on fuss and with prices that wouldn’t dent a piggy bank make it the ideal spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner. They’re famous for their wood fired pizzas - the Basilico is our go to option - but The Oak’s excellent range of mediterranean favourites should not be overlooked.

Tom Pemberton’s ‘snout to trotters’ menu seems to be delighting Bayswater residents. Delicacies like fried calf’s brains sit unassumingly alongside staples like steak and kidney pie and lemon sole. Everything is cooked with such skill and care, it’s a marvel no main courses venture north of £15. Our personal favourite is the onglet, chips and aioli, a steal at £12.20.

One of the best value meals we’ve eaten, the Iberian cooking at L could be almost twice the price. The à la carte menu contains treats like suckling lamb and baked stone bass. The tapas menu is exemplary, and we defy any meat eater to not enjoy the bacon wrapped chorizo.

Officially part of any perfect day in Primrose Hill, this elegant dining room is chic, sophisticated and simply brimming with delicious food. With three separate dining areas, Odette’s caters for a range of tastes and budgets. A mere five minute walk from Camden tube, this newcomer has been wowing residents with its simple comfort food and cosy decor. Set in a wonderful old Victorian building the trattoria upstairs serves ‘pukka’ breakfasts and lunches beloved by City workers. It has a Michelin star, two dining rooms, and some of the best foie gras you’re likely to have this side of the channel. It may be controversial, but we’ve actually had more fun at Club Gascon when eating in the Cellar dining room where the dish of the day is £9.50.

Possibly London’s best French restaurant, this ever popular romantic getaway will leave a lasting impression on anyone lucky enough to eat here. LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Getting to ExCeL London For those going directly to ExCeL London, we have featured how to connect to either the Jubilee Line or the DLR, see ‘On Public Transport’ for further details. Also included is approximate taxi times from the airport to central London and to ExCeL London if you pre-book a car with Tristar Cars on 0870 780 4586. On Public Transport To reach ExCeL London via public transport you need to take either the Jubilee Line - convenient departure points are Baker Street, Westminster, Waterloo & London Bridge - or the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which starts at Bank. Further details are listed below. Information is also available on: www.londonboatshow.com By Tube & DLR On the Jubilee Line, continue eastbound to Canning Town and change onto the DLR, which takes you straight to Custom House station. If you are on the DLR from Bank, you may need to change at Poplar to a train with destination Beckton, which will go via Custom House. See tube and transport maps on pages 75 & 79 of this guide. By River Thames Clippers operate the only fast commuter river service from central London piers to Canary Wharf with direct transport links to ExCeL London. During the show a high frequency service will be in operation with a guaranteed seat for all travellers. Piers include Savoy Pier, Blackfriars Pier, Bankside Pier, London Bridge, St Katharine’s Pier, Hilton Docklands Hotel (Rotherhithe), Greenland Pier, Masthouse Terrace and Greenwich Pier. www.thamesclippers.com or call 0870 781 5049. By Car An excellent road network links the venue directly to the North Circular (A406) and the M25, with access to the M1, M3, M4, M11, M23 and M40 motorways. Car parking at ExCeL London provides more than 4,000 spaces. The daily tariff ranges from £3 per hour to a maximum of £21 for a 24 hour stay. By Eurostar Eurostar services coming in from Brussels, Lille and Paris terminate at London’s St Pancras station where you connect to the Jubilee Line via Green Park (Victoria Line).

48

London is served by five different airports, which offer excellent transport links to central London. Below are details of how to get from the airport into central London. London City Airport ExCeL London lies just five minutes from London City Airport. Catch the DLR to Canning Town, where the Jubilee Line can take you into central London. If you are going directly to ExCeL London, change DLR trains at Canning Town for a service heading to Beckton. Taxis into London take 20 minutes.

Heathrow Airport The Heathrow Express leaves every 15 minutes, arriving in Paddington Station 15 minutes later.
