Phase II at ExCeL On 1st May 2010, ExCeL London will open their Phase 2 expansion. This new expansion will increase the current venue space by 50%, taking it to 100,000m2. The new plans include a flexible auditorium for 5,000 delegates, a conference suite for 2,000 delegates, production kitchens, further hall space, more bars & restaurants and a covered walkway from Price Regent DLR station. During the planned construction phase, ExCeL’s eastern entrance will again be closed off completely, along with Prince Regent DLR station, with no access to the exhibition halls from the eastern entrance. Exhibitors and Visitors alike should use the ExCeL London west entrance to access the exhibition, alighting at Custom House DLR station.

Central London When it comes to scratching that retail itch, most visitors to London will divide their time between Oxford St, and Regent St. Between Oxford Circus and Bond Street tube stops, you can take advantage of the best high street shopping in the world. Highlights include, Selfridges, Primark, Topshop/Topman, Uniqlo, American Apparel & Urban Outfitters . Down Regent St new meets old with British style icons Aquascutum, Church’s and Hackett cosying up next to American counterparts Brooks Brothers and Banana Republic. On Bond St you’ll find the highest of high-end fashion with designers like Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, YSL, Gucci, Armani and Salvatore Ferragamo. There are also priceless jewels at Tiffany & Co, De Beers and Cartier, as well as ‘affordable fashion’ at Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Mulberry.

Luxury staples Harrods and Harvey Nichols are traditional onestop shopping for London’s glitterati. The grand-old dames of London fashion still stock unique luxury brands that you can’t find anywhere else in the city. The painfully trendy Dover Street Market consists of a series of stores hosting some of the most exciting and innovative designers of the moment including Junya Watanabe, Raf Simmons, Thom Browne and Comme des Garçons. Liberty dominates the northern end of Carnaby Street selling luxury clothing, home ware and beauty products. There are great vintage finds to be discovered in adjoining Kingly Court and on neighbouring Newburgh Street. Luxury department store Fortnum and Mason has been dazzling shoppers since 1707. In Covent Garden high-street giants Urban Outfitters and Diesel sit next to amazing vintage stores like Rokit and Mint . A walk down Monmouth St, Earlham St , or the reinvigorated Long Acre reveals some of the best shopping in the city. 14

Culture The National Gallery hosts The Sacred Made Real Spanish Painting and Sculpture 1600 - 1700. The exhibition will be the first to explicitly explore the relationship between the painting and sculpture of 17th century Spanish realism. Although their subject matter was often religious, the artists of this time worked painstakingly to creating arrestingly life like re-creations of the saints in wood and oil. The National Gallery’s permanent free collection contains some of the best art in the world from masters like Monet, Rembrandt and Van Gogh.

Next door the National Portrait Gallery is showing Beatles to Bowie: the 60s exposed from 15 October. The exhibition will explore the lives of pop personalities that helped to shape swinging London. Expect never before seen shots of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Who as well as early portraits of singers such as Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Marianne Faithful, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie. The Royal Academy on Piccadilly is displaying a major new exhibition by Turner Prize winning sculptor Anish Kapoor. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be the monumental Svayambh, tailored to the architecture of the Royal Academy’s Main Galleries, reflecting Kapoor’s exploration of sculptural works that actively participate in their own formation. At The British Museum Moctezuma: AztecRuler will present masterpieces of Aztec culture including the impressive stone monument known as the Teocalli of Sacred Warfare. This fascinating exhibition runs until 24 January.

West London Made famous by Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in Notting Hill, Portobello Road Market is one of London’s real highlights. Open on Friday & Saturday from 7am to 6pm, it is undoubtedly one of the best places to pick out a present for a loved one, even if it’s yourself. The best thing to do is get off the tube at Notting Hill Gate and head north, down the hill towards Ladbroke Grove. The first thing you’ll come across is the antiques market, what Portobello Road used to be known for, but confusingly lots of new items are sold here as well so be sure to check that the Georgian brooch you’re picking up really is a Georgian brooch.

Next, head straight to Elgin Crescent where you’ll find rails and rails of designer clothing and accessories. You’ll see vintage Vivienne Westwood right next to the latest clutches, open toes and bandage dresses from some hip young thing. Westfield London is the largest in-town shopping centre in Europe. A destination in itself, this retail mecca boasts more than 265 stores ranging from Topshop to Tiffany & Co. There’s also a bevy of cafés and restaurants as well as a spa. The Village at Westfield is a must see for label hounds, being home to Prada, Mui Mui, Twenty 8 Twelve, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Kensington High Street is one of the City’s most user-friendly shopping areas. The Arcade houses an extensive Whole Food Market offering delicacies of every kind. There’s also the ultra-hip Urban Outfitters. As well as the market there are a number of shops down Portobello Road. You can find interesting T-shirts and accessories at Savage where you can fly the flag for your favourite borough with specially-designed area T’s and hoods. Nearby you’ll also find American Apparel, who ethically manufacture and market all their clothes from a single building in downtown Los Angeles. For something a little different try Andea who sell handmade silver jewellery from Mexico. 22

The V&A has many excellent free exhibits like their latest project, Objects of Luxury: French porcelain of the eighteenth century which celebrates one of the most exciting discoveries of the 18th century in this display of ‘white gold’ porcelain. Their major exhibition of the season Maharaja: the Splendour of India’s Royal Courts will explore the extraordinary culture of princely India until 17 January. The exhibitions will include both Indian and Western works from the last 300 years, featuring paintings, photography, textiles and dress, jewellery, and furniture. The Natural History Museum’s Darwin Centre is designed to aid our understanding of the planet and our place within it. The Centre contains an enormous eight-storey concrete cocoon housing about 17 million insects and three million plants. Of course the museum also contains famous fossils like the T-Rex as well as a myriad of educational pursuits to keep young ones entertained.

If trawling through the museums, galleries and shops isn’t your thing, a trip to Princess Diana’s former home Kensington Palace may be in order. The palatial gardens in the Royal grounds are resplendent at any time of the year.

North London Camden Market is one of the most vibrant and fascinating shopping experiences you’ll ever have. Once the favoured haunt of emo kids and middle aged goths, Camden now caters for all tastes with the famous Locks providing a wonderful backdrop for a day of retail therapy.

Everyone has there own favourite Camden boutique and market stall, whether it’s Rokit (Chalk Farm Road), Mega City Comics (Inverness St ) or the guy you saw last Saturday who does leather jackets for £30! The only way to appreciate the wonderful immediacy of Camden’s markets is to get out there and explore them for yourself. For a more serene shopping experience Upper Street has all the big brands that you’d expect from a bustling high street. A walk on the east side of the street will lead you toward the shi-shi cafes and antique stores of Camden Passage. Definitely worth a look. Just north of Oxford St, Marylebone has a distinct village feel about it that seems at odds with its close proximity to the city centre. The famous Conran store at the northern end of Marylebone High Street sells all manner of luxury home fittings and furnishings. L’Artisan Parfumeur are well known for their excellent service and beautiful fragrances. Daniela Besso, Mimco and KJ’s Laundry are all must visits for women with a passion for boutique clothing.

Nov The Birmingham Royal Ballet are in town performing in rep performing Quantum Leaps features Stanton Welch’s uplifting Powder, danced to Mozart’s popular clarinet concerto. The Centre and its Opposite is a new work from contemporary choreographer Gary Stewart, Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre, set to a powerful electronic soundscape. Birmingham Royal Ballet Director David Bintley’s E=mc² has a specially commissioned score by Matthew Hindson, and explores Einstein’s ‘Special Theory of Relativity’ in music and dance with breathtaking energy and speed. Cyrano is a hilarious and heartbreaking story of one man’s truly self-sacrificing devotion, choreographed by David Bintley with music by Carl Davis. The beautiful Lady Roxanne is in love with the dashing cadet Christian de Neuvillette, and so enlists her cousin, the poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac to deliver her intended a love letter. Cyrano is an extraordinary man, blessed with a big heart, a big mind… but an even bigger nose.

The King’s Head Theatre & Bar is famous throughout London for putting on some of the best fringe theatre in the city. At the top of Regent’s Park just before you run into the starstudded Primrose Hill you’ll find London Zoo. See the animals and even become a ‘keeper for the day’. Admission for an adult is £15.50 and £12.50 for 3-15 year olds. Under 3’s get in free.

East London Along Brick Lane boutiques like Rokit, Luna & Curious and The Laden showroom provide the best ‘per square foot shopping’ in London. Just off ‘the Lane’ Cheshire St is home to not only London’s most famous vintage store Beyond Retro, but also a host of gorgeous home ware and fashion boutiques like Dragana Perisic, Mar Mar Co and Labour & Wait. Of course with this being the East End you can buy plimsoles next door for £5! If you’re in the area on Sundays treat yourself to some of the coolest markets in London. Spitalfields, is equal parts food emporium, vintage warehouse, and designer catwalk. We’re big fans of the exquisite bags and jackets by Kirk Mark. Just down Hanbury St you’ll find Up Market. Despite a recent surge in popularity, real bargains can be found among the racks of vintage gear and designer T’s. Our favourite of the young designers plying their trade here are the aptly named We * Brick Lane whose amazing £10 T- shirts would go for 3 times that in Covent Garden. If you cross over through the trendy Trueman Brewery you’ll see the food stalls that mark the entrance to Back Market, a slightly less packed and some would say more eclectic version of it’s big brother Up Market. On Commercial St you’ll find the original All Saints clothes store. A bastion of youth fashion over the last ten years, All Saints are recognised the world over as leading lights in men’s and women’s clothing.

The Barbican Centre is one of the most interesting cultural spaces in the city. The ambitious development regularly hosts the brightest minds from the world of theatre, film, music and dance. On Hoxton Square the White Cube gallery has earned a reputation as one of the UK’s top art venues after championing the Brit-Art explosion of the mid 1990’s. And one of that era’s key players Damien Hirst returns to his artistic roots in a special showcase beginning November 25. The Tea Building sits right at the heart of Shoreditch and is both an arts haven and social scene-stealer. Its Hales gallery is a showcase for the area’s many artists and is open Wednesday - Saturday, 11am-6pm.

The newly renovated Whitechapel Gallery is once again London’s most exciting art space. London-based Polish artist Goshka Macuga reclaimed a key part of Whitechapel Gallery’s history with her presentation The Nature of the Beast. The installation focuses on the presentation of Picasso’s Guernica to the gallery in 1939. Macuga uses a Nelson Rockefeller commissioned tapestry of the Picasso masterpiece as the centre piece of this stunning meditation on war and loss. Stolen Space is the seven-year-old art collective dedicated to bringing new and exciting talent to the fore. Nearby you’ll also find the Brick Lane Gallery which amongst other things sells original works by Banksy.

The Arcola Theatre is part of the burgeoning arts scene developing in Stoke Newington as is the famous Hackney Empire.

Over in Shoreditch ditch skinny jeans and vintage T’s for made to measure 3-piece suits and elegant dresses by Chloe and Rick Owens at START . Around Bank Station you’ll find exclusive brands like hyper masculine fashion favourites Brooks Brothers and Church’s , and John Lobb. Chelsea boasts some of London’s best high-end shopping and is the preferred hunting ground for the city’s fashion stalking big cats. The famous Sloane Street connects Chelsea with Knightsbridge and as you’d expect, between the two you’ll find brands like Chloe, Prada, Fendi, Hackett, Chanel, Armani, Jimmy Choo and Todds. The King’s Road is a one-stop destination for high street brands and stand out boutiques. Borough Market is Jamie Oliver’s favourite place to pick up tasty treats and amazing produce, if you spend 10 minutes there you’ll see why. Stop by with an empty stomach on Thursdays to avoid crowds.

The South Bank isn’t always noted for it’s retail opportunities, but Gabriel’s Wharf has great designers specialising in artisan wools and cottons. Our favourites are aei:kei, for fashion, Bodo Sperlein Miranda Watkins, Elf for design and Skylark for art.

Down in Chelsea The Royal Court Theatre hosts cutting edge productions often with big name actors rubbing shoulders alongside rising stars.

Everyone goes on about the chicken and ham pie, but there is also a level of creativity at Market that’s not seen in many other restaurants of its type. You wouldn’t expect to find fresh dover sole that tastes this good at this price.

Set in a wonderful old Victorian building the trattoria upstairs serves ‘pukka’ breakfasts and lunches beloved by City workers. On Public Transport The best way to get to ExCeL London is by using the London Underground (Tube) and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Take the Jubilee Line to Canning Town and change to the DLR, which will take you to ExCeL London. The DLR will run every three minutes during peak times. Custom House is the DLR station that serves the main entrance to ExCeL and it is only two stops from Canning Town. All exhibitors and visitors must use this entrance. Please note that due to the construction of Phase 2 at ExCeL, the Eastern entrance that is served by Prince Regent DLR station will be closed.

How does the Visitor Oyster Card work? Visitor Oyster Cards are pre-loaded with £20 or £30 worth of travel. A nonrefundable fee of £2 also applies to each card. The cards can be used on Tube, DLR, London Overground, bus, tram and some National Rail services. As you travel around London, money will be deducted on each journey. A price cap will be applied to journeys made in a 24 hour period (from 0430 and before 0430 the next day), which is less than the price of an equivalent One-Day Travelcard.

Our Advice If you are staying in London for 3 days or more and want to travel throughout zones 1 – 6 (including National Rail services), Travelcards are recommended. If you are only travelling out and back from central London to ExCeL each day and around the West End in the evening, an Oyster card will probably be better value.

By Road A new road network links ExCeL London directly to the North Circular road (A406) and the M25 with access to the M1, M3, M4, M23, M26 and M40 motorways. The dual carriageway Limehouse Link provides a through route into the London Docklands from Embankment, Victoria, West End and City (25 minutes away). For 2009 all those attending World Travel Market will have access to the car parks underneath the building. Accessible from either the East or West entrances, these car parks offer much quicker access directly into the building and are, of course, under cover.

By Air ExCeL London is just 5 minutes away from London City Airport from where there will be a free shuttle bus service during WTM. London’s other Airports, Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted all have rail links to ExCeL London. Please see the map section at the back of this guide. Pre-bookable Chauffeur Services If you prefer to travel by private car you can pre-book these via the WTM website with our official chauffeur service. ExCeL London operates its own Taxi Club ensuring that there will be a plentiful supply of Black, London Taxis at ExCeL London during WTM. A typical taxi fare from ExCeL London into central London will be around £35.
