Introduction

Welcome to World Travel Market 2009 The Premier Global Event for the Travel Industry This November I look forward to welcoming you all to World Travel Market 2009, as we celebrate WTM’s prestigious 30th anniversary. This is a landmark event for WTM, the premier global event for the travel industry, and we will be celebrating it by predicting the industry’s trends and emerging markets for the next three decades. Since WTM first opened its doors way back in 1980, the event has continued to go from strength to strength outgrowing two venues (Olympia and Earl’s Court) before residing here at ExCeL – London since 2002. In total almost a million participants have taken part in the previous 29 events, with a record of 49,963 people attending last year. Introduced eight years ago, this pocket guide has become indispensable to those visitors wanting to make the most of their time in London. This guide contains invaluable information from where to stay, drink and dine out in London’s vibrant city to what’s new at WTM this year, so you can make the most of your visit and enjoy all that London has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you.

Shopping

Central London When it comes to scratching that retail itch, most visitors to London will divide their time between Oxford St, and Regent St. Between Oxford Circus and Bond Street tube stops, you can take advantage of the best high street shopping in the world. Highlights include, Selfridges, Primark, Topshop/Topman, Uniqlo, American Apparel & Urban Outfitters . Down Regent St new meets old with British style icons Aquascutum, Church’s and Hackett cosying up next to American counterparts Brooks Brothers and Banana Republic. On Bond St you’ll find the highest of high-end fashion with designers like Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, YSL, Gucci, Armani and Salvatore Ferragamo. There are also priceless jewels at Tiffany & Co, De Beers and Cartier, as well as ‘affordable fashion’ at Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Mulberry.

Luxury staples Harrods and Harvey Nichols are traditional onestop shopping for London’s glitterati. The grand-old dames of London fashion still stock unique luxury brands that you can’t find anywhere else in the city. The painfully trendy Dover Street Market consists of a series of stores hosting some of the most exciting and innovative designers of the moment including Junya Watanabe, Raf Simmons, Thom Browne and Comme des Garçons. Liberty dominates the northern end of Carnaby Street selling luxury clothing, home ware and beauty products. There are great vintage finds to be discovered in adjoining Kingly Court and on neighbouring Newburgh Street. Luxury department store Fortnum and Mason has been dazzling shoppers since 1707. In Covent Garden high-street giants Urban Outfitters and Diesel sit next to amazing vintage stores like Rokit and Mint . A walk down Monmouth St, Earlham St , or the reinvigorated Long Acre reveals some of the best shopping in the city. 14

Culture The National Gallery hosts The Sacred Made Real
Spanish Painting and Sculpture 1600 - 1700. The exhibition will be the first to explicitly explore the relationship between the painting and sculpture of 17th century Spanish realism. Although their subject matter was often religious, the artists of this time worked painstakingly to creating arrestingly life like re-creations of the saints in wood and oil. The National Gallery’s permanent free collection contains some of the best art in the world from masters like Monet, Rembrandt and Van Gogh.

Next door the National Portrait Gallery is showing Beatles to Bowie: the 60s exposed from 15 October. The exhibition will explore the lives of pop personalities that helped to shape swinging London. Expect never before seen shots of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Who as well as early portraits of singers such as Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Marianne Faithful, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie. The Royal Academy on Piccadilly is displaying a major new exhibition by Turner Prize winning sculptor Anish Kapoor. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be the monumental Svayambh, tailored to the architecture of the Royal Academy’s Main Galleries, reflecting Kapoor’s exploration of sculptural works that actively participate in their own formation. At The British Museum Moctezuma: AztecRuler will present masterpieces of Aztec culture including the impressive stone monument known as the Teocalli of Sacred Warfare. This fascinating exhibition runs until 24 January.

West London Made famous by Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in Notting Hill, Portobello Road Market is one of London’s real highlights. Open on Friday & Saturday from 7am to 6pm, it is undoubtedly one of the best places to pick out a present for a loved one, even if it’s yourself. The best thing to do is get off the tube at Notting Hill Gate and head north, down the hill towards Ladbroke Grove. The first thing you’ll come across is the antiques market, what Portobello Road used to be known for, but confusingly lots of new items are sold here as well so be sure to check that the Georgian brooch you’re picking up really is a Georgian brooch.

Next, head straight to Elgin Crescent where you’ll find rails and rails of designer clothing and accessories. You’ll see vintage Vivienne Westwood right next to the latest clutches, open toes and bandage dresses from some hip young thing. Westfield London is the largest in-town shopping centre in Europe. A destination in itself, this retail mecca boasts more than 265 stores ranging from Topshop to Tiffany & Co. There’s also a bevy of cafés and restaurants as well as a spa. The Village at Westfield is a must see for label hounds, being home to Prada, Mui Mui, Twenty 8 Twelve, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Kensington High Street is one of the City’s most user-friendly shopping areas. The Arcade houses an extensive Whole Food Market offering delicacies of every kind. There’s also the ultra-hip Urban Outfitters. As well as the market there are a number of shops down Portobello Road. You can find interesting T-shirts and accessories at Savage where you can fly the flag for your favourite borough with specially-designed area T’s and hoods. Nearby you’ll also find American Apparel, who ethically manufacture and market all their clothes from a single building in downtown Los Angeles. For something a little different try Andea who sell handmade silver jewellery from Mexico. 22

North London Camden Market is one of the most vibrant and fascinating shopping experiences you’ll ever have. Once the favoured haunt of emo kids and middle aged goths, Camden now caters for all tastes with the famous Locks providing a wonderful backdrop for a day of retail therapy.

Everyone has there own favourite Camden boutique and market stall, whether it’s Rokit (Chalk Farm Road), Mega City Comics (Inverness St ) or the guy you saw last Saturday who does leather jackets for £30! The only way to appreciate the wonderful immediacy of Camden’s markets is to get out there and explore them for yourself. For a more serene shopping experience Upper Street has all the big brands that you’d expect from a bustling high street. A walk on the east side of the street will lead you toward the shi-shi cafes and antique stores of Camden Passage. Definitely worth a look. Just north of Oxford St, Marylebone has a distinct village feel about it that seems at odds with its close proximity to the city centre. The famous Conran store at the northern end of Marylebone High Street sells all manner of luxury home fittings and furnishings. L’Artisan Parfumeur are well known for their excellent service and beautiful fragrances. Daniela Besso, Mimco and KJ’s Laundry are all must visits for women with a passion for boutique clothing.

Culture Sadler’s Wells is London’s premier dance venue. From 10 - 14

Nov The Birmingham Royal Ballet are in town performing in rep performing Quantum Leaps features Stanton Welch’s uplifting Powder, danced to Mozart’s popular clarinet concerto. The Centre and its Opposite is a new work from contemporary choreographer Gary Stewart, Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre, set to a powerful electronic soundscape. Birmingham Royal Ballet Director David Bintley’s E=mc² has a specially commissioned score by Matthew Hindson, and explores Einstein’s ‘Special Theory of Relativity’ in music and dance with breathtaking energy and speed. Cyrano is a hilarious and heartbreaking story of one man’s truly self-sacrificing devotion, choreographed by David Bintley with music by Carl Davis. The beautiful Lady Roxanne is in love with the dashing cadet Christian de Neuvillette, and so enlists her cousin, the poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac to deliver her intended a love letter. Cyrano is an extraordinary man, blessed with a big heart, a big mind… but an even bigger nose.

The King’s Head Theatre & Bar is famous throughout London for putting on some of the best fringe theatre in the city. At the top of Regent’s Park just before you run into the starstudded Primrose Hill you’ll find London Zoo. See the animals and even become a ‘keeper for the day’. East London Along Brick Lane boutiques like Rokit, Luna & Curious and The Laden showroom provide the best ‘per square foot shopping’ in London. Just off ‘the Lane’ Cheshire St is home to not only London’s most famous vintage store Beyond Retro, but also a host of gorgeous home ware and fashion boutiques like Dragana Perisic, Mar Mar Co and Labour & Wait. Of course with this being the East End you can buy plimsoles next door for £5! If you’re in the area on Sundays treat yourself to some of the coolest markets in London. Spitalfields, is equal parts food emporium, vintage warehouse, and designer catwalk. We’re big fans of the exquisite bags and jackets by Kirk Mark. Just down Hanbury St you’ll find Up Market. Despite a recent surge in popularity, real bargains can be found among the racks of vintage gear and designer T’s. Our favourite of the young designers plying their trade here are the aptly named We * Brick Lane whose amazing £10 T- shirts would go for 3 times that in Covent Garden. If you cross over through the trendy Trueman Brewery you’ll see the food stalls that mark the entrance to Back Market, a slightly less packed and some would say more eclectic version of it’s big brother Up Market. On Commercial St you’ll find the original All Saints clothes store. A bastion of youth fashion over the last ten years, All Saints are recognised the world over as leading lights in men’s and women’s clothing.

The Barbican Centre is one of the most interesting cultural spaces in the city. The ambitious development regularly hosts the brightest minds from the world of theatre, film, music and dance. On Hoxton Square the White Cube gallery has earned a reputation as one of the UK’s top art venues after championing the Brit-Art explosion of the mid 1990’s. And one of that era’s key players Damien Hirst returns to his artistic roots in a special showcase beginning November 25. The Tea Building sits right at the heart of Shoreditch and is both an arts haven and social scene-stealer. Its Hales gallery is a showcase for the area’s many artists and is open Wednesday - Saturday, 11am-6pm.

The newly renovated Whitechapel Gallery is once again London’s most exciting art space. London-based Polish artist Goshka Macuga reclaimed a key part of Whitechapel Gallery’s history with her presentation The Nature of the Beast. The installation focuses on the presentation of Picasso’s Guernica to the gallery in 1939. Macuga uses a Nelson Rockefeller commissioned tapestry of the Picasso masterpiece as the centre piece of this stunning meditation on war and loss. Stolen Space is the seven-year-old art collective dedicated to bringing new and exciting talent to the fore. Nearby you’ll also find the Brick Lane Gallery which amongst other things sells original works by Banksy.

The Arcola Theatre is part of the burgeoning arts scene developing in Stoke Newington as is the famous Hackney Empire.

Over in Shoreditch ditch skinny jeans and vintage T’s for made to measure 3-piece suits and elegant dresses by Chloe and Rick Owens at START . Around Bank Station you’ll find exclusive brands like hyper masculine fashion favourites Brooks Brothers and Church’s , and John Lobb. You’ll also find Louis Vuitton, Hermes and a whole host of traditional tailors. 30

South London Ever wondered where WAGS learn to max out credit cards and send back champagne? Chelsea boasts some of London’s best high-end shopping and is the preferred hunting ground for the city’s fashion stalking big cats. The famous Sloane Street connects Chelsea with Knightsbridge and as you’d expect, between the two you’ll find brands like Chloe, Prada, Fendi, Hackett, Chanel, Armani, Jimmy Choo and Todds. The King’s Road is a one-stop destination for high street brands and stand out boutiques. Diesel, LK Bennett and Heals compete for space alongside Hugo Boss, Gieves & Hawkes as well as super brands like Bamford & Sons and

On the South Bank of the Thames, The National Theatre stands tall as a reminder of Britain’s amazing theatre tradition. Founded by Sir Laurence Olivier in 1963 the theatre has seen some of the most famous actors in the world grace its famous stage. The Southbank Centre is arguably the home of London culture

scene. The Hayward Gallery is the best place to see visual artists who aren’t afraid to push the envelope. Next door, the Royal Festival Hall hosts the world’s best musicians as well as regular visits from the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Coccinelle.

Just along the water the British Film Institute shows classic flicks and modern masterpieces.

Leading back into the town on Old Brompton Road you can find an assortment of designer stores like Ralph Lauren and Swarovski along with high street favourites like Uniqlo and Zara.

Borough Market is Jamie Oliver’s favourite place to pick up tasty treats and amazing produce, if you spend 10 minutes there you’ll see why. Stop by with an empty stomach on Thursdays to avoid crowds.

The South Bank isn’t always noted for it’s retail opportunities, but Gabriel’s Wharf has great designers specialising in artisan wools and cottons. Our favourites are aei:kei, for fashion, Bodo Sperlein Miranda Watkins, Elf for design and Skylark for art.

Down in Chelsea The Royal Court Theatre hosts cutting edge productions often with big name actors rubbing shoulders alongside rising stars.

The OXO Tower is also a sure thing when it comes to picking up art and clothing that you won’t find anywhere else. We recommend Candy Anthony for women’s evening wear or John Freeman for stunning photography.

Recent months have seen Wunderkind writer Polly Stenham build on the success of That Face with Tusk Tusk, and star of Little Voice, Jane Horrocks’ play to rave reviews in Aunt Dan and Lemon. The Saatchi Gallery on Duke of York’s Square is now the biggest free contemporary art space in the world. Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture focuses on contemporary American artists and how they have taken on the multifarious strands of their inheritance to produce exciting new works. Runs from 3 June.

Home to some of the world’s best restaurants and value for money hidden gems, The West End, Soho and Covent Garden contain all that’s great about dining in London.

The Ivy £56

COVENT GARDEN

Eating and Drinking Restaurants

Central London

Those who tell you The Ivy is overrated have obviously never eaten there. Still the table that everyone wants pre- or post-theatre, you can go all out with caviar and Bannockburn rib steak, or take the Guy Ritchie approach and opt for shepherds pie and bang bang chicken. If it’s the experience rather than the food you’re after, then head in for lunch. You’re just as likely to spot a celeb.

Freephone: 0370 7803125

Pearl £71

HOLBORN

This foodie heaven spoils diners with its sumptuous menu and a chic, sophisticated dining room. Celebrity Head Chef Jun Tanaka regularly dishes out some of the best meals we’ve tasted in the area. Expect beautiful presentation, curious food pairing and attentive staff. Wine lovers will fall for the cool wine cellar that punctuates the centre of the restaurant. Excellent sommelier to boot.

Freephone: 0370 7803126

MOTI MAHAL £47

COVENT GARDEN

Far from a curry house, Moti Mahal takes traditional flavours of Indian cuisine and works them into incredibly light and interesting dishes. Our last visit was made all the more enjoyable by a truly delicious soft shell crab tossed with rouquette, watercress, coriander and coconut dressing.

Freephone: 0370 7803127

ROSSOPOMODORO £33 COVENT GARDEN You can’t go wrong at this smarter–than–average chain. All the ingredients - including the water - are sourced directly from Naples. We’re big fans of Rosso’s pizzas. Hearty and simple, the Neapolitan staple really does taste better in the hands of true professionals.

Freephone: 0370 7803128 Prices per head are supplied by Hardens and include three courses, half a bottle of wine, coffee and service

Restaurants

West London Exclusive, inspiring and quintessentially London, many would argue the best is still in the West. From Hyde Park to Shepherd’s Bush this is where London’s real wealth have put down their roots.

Assaggi £59

Notting hill An unassuming location, intimate decor and some of the best Italian food in the capital make up the 11 table dining room at Assaggi. Booking here is essential for any night of the week. Prices vary from £48 for milk fed lamb (feeds 2-3) to £14 for the delicious buffalo ricotta & Spinach ravioli with sage & lemon butter. Our favourite dish is the tagliolini with crab meat

Freephone: 0370 7803129

The oak £40

westbourne grove

There’s many a west London local who would kill us for telling you that The Oak is one of the best neighbourhood eateries around. High on quality, low on fuss and with prices that wouldn’t dent a piggy bank make it the ideal spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner. They’re famous for their wood fired pizzas - the Basilico is our go to option - but The Oak’s excellent range of Mediterranean favourites should not be overlooked.

SRI LANKA

Freephone: 0370 7803131

Hereford Road £40

BAYSWATER

Tom Pemberton’s ‘snout to trotters’ menu seems to be delighting Bayswater residents. Delicacies like fried calf’s brains sit unassumingly alongside staples like steak and kidney pie and lemon sole. Everything is cooked with such skill and care, it’s a marvel no main courses venture north of £15. Our personal favourite is the onglet, chips and aioli, a steal at £12.20.

Freephone: 0370 7803140

L Restaurant & Bar £44

KENSINGTON

One of the best value meals we’ve eaten, the Iberian cooking at L could be almost twice the price. The à la carte menu contains treats like suckling lamb and baked stone bass. The tapas menu is exemplary, and we defy any meat eater to not enjoy the bacon wrapped chorizo.

Freephone: 0370 7803132 44

Visit us at WTM stand AS5300 and join us for a complimentary cup of Ceylon Tea.

St Pancras has reinvigorated this once drab part of the city. But the magnificent station is by no means the only exciting thing going on in this part of the capital. Some of London’s best theatre and music venues sit unassumingly on the borders of a Royal park.

Odette’s £70

REGENTS PARK

Eating and Drinking Restaurants

North London

Officially part of any perfect day in Primrose Hill, this elegant dining room is chic, sophisticated and simply brimming with delicious food. With three separate dining areas, Odette’s caters for a range of tastes and budgets. The Restaurant serves stunning British cuisine while The Kitchen is extremely popular for two or three course Sunday lunch. We thought of moving in after we tried the halibut with butternut squash gnocchi. Divine.

Osteria Emilia £38

On the southern edges of Hampstead Heath you’ll find this cracking little Italian eatery. The dishes range from rabbits and game to comfy classics like puttanesca and various gnocchis. As the perfect end to a balmy summer evening on the Heath, Osteria Emilia stock ice cream from Oddono’s. Bella!

CAMDEN

A mere five minute walk from Camden tube, this newcomer has been wowing residents with its simple comfort food and cosy decor. Everyone goes on about the chicken and ham pie, but there is also a level of creativity at Market that’s not seen in many other restaurants of its type. You wouldn’t expect to find fresh dover sole that tastes this good at this price.

Freephone: 0370 7803135

York & albany £49

Regent’s park

Part of the ever-expanding Gordon Ramsay network York & Albany’s stunning location overlooking Regent’s Park is mirrored in the standard of the food on offer. Fantastic value for money, sea bream with crushed new potatoes will only set you back £15. The Sunday menu here is an absolute treat, three courses are a real steal at £25. Be sure to leave room for the apple crumble!

South London

The most exciting, innovative and vibrant part of London has finally stepped out of the shadow of the West. City professionals and those in the know come here for unspoilt luxury without the crowds of central London.

Home to London’s largest concentration of museums and galleries as well as some of its most well-to-do residents, the south of the city is a favourite of visitors and locals alike.

Fifteen £70

OLD STREET Jamie Oliver opened Fifteen in 2002 as a charity to help disadvantaged youngsters. Set in a wonderful old Victorian building the trattoria upstairs serves ‘pukka’ breakfasts and lunches beloved by City workers. Downstairs the dining room offers a great value lunch menu: £25 for three courses or £22.50 for two. On our visit we found the melanzane alla parmigiana a particular treat.

Club Gascon £60

Tom Aikens £91

CHELSEA

Restaurants Eating and Drinking

Restaurants

East London

Having sewn up this particular part of Chelsea, Mr Aiken’s Michelin-starred homage to all things French is the icing on his three restaurant cake. The main courses speak to Aiken’s love of seafood, but the starters and desserts show the depth and flair that has won the restaurant so much praise. Prices seem steep but a multitude of pre- and post-course extras make up for that.

Freephone: 0370 7803141

FARRINGDON

It has a Michelin star, two dining rooms, and some of the best foie gras you’re likely to have this side of the channel. It may be controversial, but we’ve actually had more fun at Club Gascon when eating in the Cellar dining room where the dish of the day is £9.50.

Cinnamon Club £60

VICTORIA

As far from bland, traditional Indian food as you can get, this is a completely different experience. The best way to enjoy the stellar menu is to go as a group and share out the wonderful favours. We love the smoked rack of lamb with Rajasthani corn sauce

The Boundary £62

SHOREDITCH

The recently opened Boundary is exactly what Shoreditch needed to finally silence those who said the area was all style and no substance. Tapping into the obvious potential for a business rendezvous of reliable quality, the Boundary’s chic dining room is proving very popular with beleaguered City folks. Expect heart warming British classics cooked to perfection.

Freephone: 0370 7803138

Bleeding Heart £49

FARRINGDON

Possibly London’s best French restaurant, this ever popular romantic getaway will leave a lasting impression on anyone lucky enough to eat here. Without the waiting list of a West End restaurant, you can make the most of your time either in the bistro or main dining room by opting for something classically French. The pig’s ear and black pudding salad or suckling pig with confit shoulder pork are good places to start.

Travel

Travel Services Getting In & Around London Getting In and Around London To assist you with your travel planning, Reed Travel Exhibitions has put together a number of arrangements that are designed to bring you the services you require at the best possible rates. Working with specialist partners, we can help you with accommodation, ground transportation including chauffeur services, Travelcards and Oyster cards. Information on all these services can be found on the WTM website at www.wtmlondon.com/travelandhotels. At WTM in ExCeL London there will be a Travel Services Desk located in the Central Boulevard, between the entrances to halls S3 & N3.

On Public Transport The best way to get to ExCeL London is by using the London Underground (Tube) and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Take the Jubilee Line to Canning Town and change to the DLR, which will take you to ExCeL London. The DLR will run every three minutes during peak times. Custom House is the DLR station that serves the main entrance to ExCeL and it is only two stops from Canning Town. All exhibitors and visitors must use this entrance. Please note that due to the construction of Phase 2 at ExCeL, the Eastern entrance that is served by Prince Regent DLR station will be closed.

Travelcards Thanks to Transport for London and the Association of Train Operating Companies, we are able to offer two types of discounted Travelcards: (threeday and seven-day) to all those attending World Travel Market. Details of these Travelcards are shown below. The prices represent a discount of up to 30 percent. This offer is available exclusively to bonafide visitors and exhibitors at World Travel Market. Travelcards cover journeys on all of London’s public transport services through zones 1–6, Tube, National Rail, Buses, Tramlink Dockland Light Railway (DLR). You also receive a 30 percent discount off the normal fare on scheduled Riverboat services! Additionally, you can use your Travelcard on the Underground and DLR upon arrival from Heathrow or London City Airport. Please note that Airport Express Services are not included. Prices: Three days—£30 (normal price £42.40) Seven days—£37 (normal price £47.60) You can purchase Travelcards in advance via the WTM website at www. wtmlondon.com. (Click on Travel and Hotels.) They will also be available during the exhibition at the Travel Services Desk from Saturday 09 November. Please note you cannot buy these discounted Travelcards at London Underground stations or other outlets.

Oystercards World Travel Market and VisitBritain are pleased to present you with the opportunity to purchase your London Visitor Oyster card and tickets to other key London attractions before your trip to Britain. How does the Visitor Oyster Card work? Oyster cards are pre-loaded with a minimum of £10 worth of credit for pay as you go travel. Pay as you go has several advantages over paper tickets: Oyster fares are generally cheaper, credit can be used as you need it and doesn’t expire, and daily price capping automatically calculates the cheapest fare for all the journeys you make in a single day The cards can be used on the tube, DLR, London Overground, bus, tram and some National Rail Services. Please note a non-refundable fee of £2 applies to each card.

56

Travel

How does the Visitor Oyster Card work? Visitor Oyster Cards are pre-loaded with £20 or £30 worth of travel. A nonrefundable fee of £2 also applies to each card. The cards can be used on Tube, DLR, London Overground, bus, tram and some National Rail services. As you travel around London, money will be deducted on each journey. A price cap will be applied to journeys made in a 24 hour period (from 0430 and before 0430 the next day), which is less than the price of an equivalent One-Day Travelcard.

MOTORCYCLE RENTALS AND TOURS

To pre-purchase Oyster cards for overseas visitors please go to www.tfl.gov.uk. Oyster cards are available to UK residents but the purchasing system and values are different. For full details and purchase please visit the Transport for London website.

Our Advice If you are staying in London for 3 days or more and want to travel throughout zones 1 – 6 (including National Rail services), Travelcards are recommended. If you are only travelling out and back from central London to ExCeL each day and around the West End in the evening, an Oyster card will probably be better value.

By Road A new road network links ExCeL London directly to the North Circular road (A406) and the M25 with access to the M1, M3, M4, M23, M26 and M40 motorways. The dual carriageway Limehouse Link provides a through route into the London Docklands from Embankment, Victoria, West End and City (25 minutes away). For 2009 all those attending World Travel Market will have access to the car parks underneath the building. Accessible from either the East or West entrances, these car parks offer much quicker access directly into the building and are, of course, under cover.
