Up Close: From the Editor Taking a vacation to improve one’s physical, emotional and/or spiritual well-being is an old concept. The Bible even mentions the Dead Sea’s therapeutic waters and 18th century elites felt the lure of Europe’s healing mineral baths. Today, the words “wellness” and “vacation” are spoken in the same breath with unprecedented frequency. Over the past decade, this type of vacation has become incredibly diverse and democratized. Some questions to ask before choosing a wellness vacation: What is the quality of the accommodations, meals and amenities? What additional programs/activities are available? Is the cost of the vacation inclusive? Any extra fees? Is the staff qualified, either by education, training or experience, to provide the services being offered? Are the programs being offered a good match for my health and activity levels? What are my wellness goals and are they likely to be met? Is the property able to address my dietary needs/preferences? These questions were considered and answered in choosing each destination in every state to present to our readers. Here’s to a “peaceful, happy, and rejuvenating extended getaway for the personal well-being of each and every one of you! Wherever you choose to go, or whatever you do, or whoever you see, be sure to have a Blessed Easter! Until next time. . .

Easter is coming and it’s time to get out those baskets for the beloved egg hunts.

Let’s Go Bargain Hunting ...

By Sheeree Oney Places to Go Editor When a person is required to travel to different destinations for business, the road signs, hotels and rental cars all begin to blend into one big whirlwind of confusion: “Now which vehicle is mine this week?” or “Why don’t they put room numbers on these room cards?” and “Am I really going the right direction?” So wherever you are headed next or whatever your plans are, here are a few tips I’ve learned that makes life a little bit easier. 1.) Since I stay at the same chain hotels and they look so much alike, I ask for the same room number when it’s available. This way, I don’t have to remember different room numbers all the time. 2.) When I rent a car, I make sure it has a key fob (automotive remote control transmitter). When parked in a full lot, I can signal the lights to flash, making it much easier to find. 3.) Find a separate pouch with a zipper to keep all business receipts in one place. You can leave it in the car or place in a convenient spot that is easy to use. 4.) Before leaving home, make sure you have a car charger for your phone and program your next destination into the Google map GPS. While driving, (especially if alone) make sure the voice is activated to communicate directions. More than once, I’ve stopped for gas or a snack from the fast food drive through, then got turned around and headed the wrong way. The GPS will redirect you to turn around. 5.) We all do it at one time or another. But DON’T text and drive. There are too many convenient technical devices like Bluetooth earphones to help use our phones without texting. Learn how to use the verbal commands on your smartphone, so you don’t have to look at it to use it. Make sure you have a reliable holder to place your phone on the dashboard so you don’t have to hold it while driving. Now that we have the tips out of the way, let’s go bargain hunting. Here are a few to use right away:

Along with Jesse, the show will also feature Nashville Recording Artist Bryan Moffitt. Bryan Moffitt is an American country music singer and songwriter from Lexington, Tennessee. Food Fun Do you name your cars? It seems like the right thing to do when you are the type who keeps a vehicle for decades. After a while, your mode of transportation begins to feel like a member of the family. At one point in time, we had twin cars. They were identical in every way. Seriously, they were the same make, model, year, color, interior and even had VIN numbers so close, we think they were made on the same day. Oddly enough, the keys were not interchangeable. Thus, we occasionally had trouble telling them apart. As a result, we did eventually name them. One had a tiny chip in the windshield and the other had a fold out cup holder in the armrest. The outcome? Chip and Flip were named. (We resisted the urge to call them Chip ‘n Dip.) On occasion, we would end up at the same place at the same time. If we parked close together, there would be times we had to look closely inside the car for miscellaneous items to determine which was mine and which was hubby’s. The baseball glove, bowling ball or golf clubs was always a signal that car wasn’t mine. Have you ever glanced in the neighboring cars once you parked your car? It can be quite entertaining. It is not unusual to see an infant or child’s car seat, coffee cup or a jacket. But over the years, I’ve seen some rather interesting items. One day, as I walked by a co-worker’s car, I noticed a single onion in the passenger seat. I couldn’t help but wonder what the interior of that vehicle would smell like after sitting there, closed up, in

the sun, all day. Rather aromatic I suspect . . . In the winter, ice scrapers are often visible, but it’s now the time of year to replace those with umbrellas. It’s probably a good idea to inventory my car’s contents while I’m at it. In addition to the obligatory proof of insurance, my glove compartment contains a roll of quarters, a wad of McDonald’s napkins, a dozen straws and a salt shaker. Hmmm, it’s probably time to rethink that combination. My emergency kit used to boast a small pillow, blanket, a sleeve of saltines, bottled water and a puzzle book (no pencil). Oh yeah, and an atlas – now obsolete. Yes indeed, it sounds like that needs to be updated also. We have recently survived flu and cold season. During that interminable span of weeks, we disinfected our work space multiple times. We dutifully wiped down door knobs, light switches, TV remotes, computer keyboards and such. But it never once occurred to me to do the same in my car – until now as I prepare for spring and summer excursions. Spring housecleaning includes the car this year. In addition to vacuuming the carpet and seats, we also plan to condition the dashboard vinyl. Then we will use disinfecting wipes on the steering wheel, gearshift, window buttons, radio and temperature control knobs and seat belt buckles along with any other surface normally forgotten. My new car emergency kit contains jumper cables, disabled vehicle reflectors and a quart of alternative emergency fuel. My atlas has

been replaced by a GPS and I keep a phone charger available. Yes, I still carry loose change, and water along with protein bars anytime I am going to be on the open road. I also include snacks anytime I travel out of town. Cookies are one of my favorite items because they don’t melt and are easy to eat without being messy in the now sparkling clean car. This month we are featuring information pertaining to your health and fitness. So here is an alternative to sugar laden munchies: SUGAR FREE COOKIES ½ c. prunes ½ c. dates ½ c. raisins 1 egg 1 c. flour ½ c. margarine ¼ tsp. butter flavoring 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. soda 2 Tbsp. nuts Chop or cut fruit into small pieces and cook in ½ c. water for 6 minutes. Cool. Add rest of ingredients and mix well. Drop by teaspoon on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-12 minutes. Makes 2 dozen. Even someone who thinks cookies must contain sugar will like these because the fruit produces its own sweetness. These also stay moist a bit longer than regular cookies, and are allowed (in moderation) for diabetics. In last month’s issue I asked the question: what’s in your junk drawer? This month, a variation of that would be: what’s in your car? Or rather, what should be in your car? April, 2019 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -9-

Janie Fricke, one of Country music’s award-winning female artists of the 80’s, is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of The Dukes of Hazzard, just like all the fans of the famed television show, except there is one catch. Janie Fricke practically gave birth to the General Lee!! Janie Fricke played Ginny, a bank robber - on Season 7 Episode 1; an 8-year flashback show - in which, she along with her sidekick robbed a bank and in an effort to get-away crashed their 1969 Dodge Charger (it was black at the time). That vehicle was hauled off to the junk yard where the ‘Duke Boys’ discovered it and with the help of Crazy Cooter Davenport got it fixed up, painted orange, and ready for Boss Hogg’s Hazzard County Race. It then officially became the General Lee! “That was really an exciting time for me. We taped the show

around 83 or 84 and I was doing a show with Merle Haggard in LA when the casting director came backstage and asked me if I wanted to be on the show. She said if I could sing, I could surely act,” says Janie Fricke. “I was the only country singer to ever play an acting role on the show. Other stars like Dottie West, Oak Ridge Boys and Freddy Fender all got to perform songs on the show in the Boar’s Nest. When we filmed the episode, it took us 10 days to tape that one show and we had to wear the same outfit every day. It

was really funny because even the chickens on the show had a manager and agent. Yes, animals have agents too! It sure is amazing to think that show is forty years old. Fans bring General Lee cars for me to sign all the time at shows and it just proves that people still love the down-home country lifestyle that all the Dukes lived.” or tickets and more details, visit www.musclekingz.com or www. goodolboystour.com. K

ansas Salt Spas or Salt Rooms and Caves are wellness studios which feature halotherapy services — either passive through a resting in comfortable recliners or lounges in order to breath in the positive effects and negative ions produced by sea salt and sea salt architectural components (including floors and walls) or interactive — through the use of halogenerators or chambers and booths which increase the level of exposure. A Salt Spa encourages guests to relax in a scent-free and pure air environment which is conducive to improving respiratory health and addressing related allergy and other issues. Halotherapy (also known as

salt therapy) is is derived from the Greek word for salt — halos. There are a variety of stories about how it came to be considered a modern wellness treatment as a result of observing the positive effects on miners who spent prolonged periods of time in salt caves. However, salt therapy is actually a centuries-old treatment which is regaining popularity as an all-natural and drug-free remedy for respiratory, allergy and skin conditions, as well as stress and fatigue. It is equally suitable for adults and children. This resurgence is partly in thanks to the increasingly availa-

bility of man-made salt caves, salt rooms, salt spas, and salt chambers, more readily available and accessible than the historically isolated salt caves. The heavy concentration of salt particles in the salt cave’s air make it nearly impossible for germs, bacteria, viruses and nasty bugs to thrive or survive. Consequently, airborne bacteria cannot spread. The Salinity Salt and Flotation Spa on 135th Street, Overland Park, works to improve lives naturally. Ark Encounter

WILLIAMSTOWN - Answers in Genesis is hosting an Easter Conference at the Ark Encounter April 17-21. Sponsored by PureFlix. com, the apologetics conference will present practical pointers on how to defend the Christian faith in a secular culture. As Christians celebrate Easter on April 21, AiG will host attendees from 38 states and five nations at the Ark attraction for a time of teaching with an apologetics emphasis. The conference is called “Answering Atheists.” Because the current generation is much more atheistic, Christians need to know how to impact atheists with the Gospel message. Customarily, the American Atheists hold their annual national convention on Easter weekend and attempt to counter Christians’ celebration of Easter, a major event and doctrine of the Christian faith. The atheists’ 2019 National Convention will be held in downtown Cincinnati, April 1921, north of the Ark Encounter. The AiG Easter conference will provide a clear, logical defense of the Christian faith that will answer the many skeptical questions people have today in regard to the Bible and Christianity. The confer-30- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ April, 2019

ence will also equip Christians to engage skeptics in an increasingly secularized culture and challenge non-Christians concerning the truth of the Bible. All are welcome to attend the conference. Ken Ham said, “At Easter, Christians are known to exclaim ‘Hallelujah—Christ is risen from the dead!’ The resurrection is powerful confirmation that the Christian faith is true. As we celebrate this truth at our new Answers Center at the Ark, we’ll equip Christians to have answers to the skeptical questions of our day about the Bible and its history.” Registrants will receive: • Four days of solid biblical teaching, a concluding 7 a.m. Easter sunrise service at the Ark Encounter, which is free to all • Seven-day combo admission to the popular Ark Encounter and the world-class Creation Museum, 45 minutes from the Ark, with free parking • Talks by experts on apologetics and how to reach skeptics with answers Keynote speakers include AiG’s CEO Ken Ham and evangelist Ray Comfort, along with a diverse lineup of dynamic presenters from AiG and other organiza-

tions. Comfort is a renowned author of more than 70 books and a co-host of the award-winning TV show The Way of the Master. He is the founder of the evangelistic ministry Living Waters. Families and individuals may choose from several multi-day pass options, which include all conference sessions, daily presentations, and other activities. Meal options and retail discounts are available. After Easter Sunday’s free service, attendees can enjoy a special brunch at Emzara’s Buffet restaurant beginning at 8:30 a.m. Located within easy walking distance of the conference, Emzara’s will feature entrees such as carved lamb, ham, fried chicken, pot roast, and more. The Creation Museum, located west of the Cincinnati Airport, has welcomed four million visitors since opening in 2007. Places to Go:

in New Mexico Santa Fe, Taos, Ojo Caliente, and Albuquerque are fast becoming known as the epicenter for wellness. There is a legendary spa that offers sulfur-free mineral pools, said to heal ailments such as indigestion and arthritis, and sound bath sessions held in a centuries-old sanctuary, and run by a woman who studied with Madonna’s guru. And yes, in true New Mexico form, there is a ranch—a horse ranch!—run by its resident Horse Lady, who offers her guests a true glimpse into the rustic lifestyle by way of equine therapy, home-cooked meals, and their very own adobe-style fireplace. The possibilities for a luxurious getaway are endless. SANTA FE - Ten Thousand Waves is a hotel and spa modeled after Japan’s natural hot springs known as onsen. The spa’s man-made pools, which stretch across 20 acres of rocky land, where fragrant junipers and piñons abound, offer both unisex soaking as well as a private space for women only—in true Japanese tradition, one must bathe in the nude in order to truly reap all the mineral-rich benefits. For further relaxation, consider a Shiatsu-inspired facial massage, or a solo sitting in the meditation room. One night’s stay in a ryokan-style hut will surely transport you to another place entirely— mind, body, and soul.

ABIQUIU - Not far from the iconic red rocks of Ghost Ranch, near where Georgia O’Keeffe once laid down roots, Judy Schneider, aka the “Horse Lady,” offers personalized equine-assisted therapy at Healing Through Horses. A far cry from horse camp, the ranch is really “a place for women who are experiencing emotional obstacles in their

lives to come heal,” she says. The retreat, which can be experienced as a group or solo, for up to seven days, consists of one-on-one time with Schneider, the animals, as well as the serene setting itself. There are day trips to a neighboring spa, or home visits from local holistic practitioners out of the ranch’s sweet and secluded treatment space, Desert Rose. Accommodations can be found at the neighboring Abiquiu Inn, a quaint and rustic mountain house boasting a farm-to-table restaurant with a seasonal menu and local beer. As for the late-night entertainment? Consider the adobe-style fireplaces, better known as kivas, your new Netflix and chill. Located halfway between Abiquiu and Taos, Ojo Caliente Spa and Resort is an unincorporated community best known for its natural hot springs. Considered to be one of the oldest health resorts in the U.S., Ojo Caliente’s sulfur-free mineral pools are legendary for their healing abilities, and thus frequented by tourists and locals alike. Take the cliffside Iron Springs, which features warm, ironrich water that bubbles up from the pebbled floor and is believed to aid in blood flow and benefit the immune system, or the Arsenic Spring, should you seek relief from arthritis, stomach ulcers, or chronic skin conditions. A sight to be seen, and soaked up, is the cavernous Soda “Steam” Pool—it looks just like it sounds, like a pot of boiling water due to the naturally high water temperature; it supposedly helps those with digestive issues, too. After a day of soaking, steaming, or mud bathing, thanks to the abundance of clean wet clay on site, spend time among the property’s thousand-acre trails or at its highly acclaimed bar and restaurant—it will be a meal well earned.

Places to Go:

Allegheny State P By Kathleen Walls Publisher/Editor of AmericanRoads.net Located in The Enchanted Mountains of New York, AKA Cattaraugus County, Allegheny State Park offers more than 65,000 acres to enjoy a healthy vacation. It’s the largest state park in the state and is an all-season park. The park consists of two sections, Red House and Quaker. There are 18 hiking trails 5.6 miles of them paved if you want to bike. There’s even a covered bridge you can hike across. If you like your fun wet, there are multiple opportunities for water sports on the Red House Lake including rowing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boats. You can take it easy and opt for swimming or just lazing on the sandy beach. Fishing is good here too. Visit in the winter and you will still find lots to do. Art Roscoe Recreation area offers 25 miles of trails for cross-country skiing and snowmobiles. One nice thing is you don’t have to pack in a lot of equipment. The retail shop located in the historic, Tutor-style administration building rents bikes and water sport equipment and sells fishing supplies. There is a museum in the administration building filled with a lot of natural history and regional background material. There’s even a restaurant to take a break at in there. For a bit of unusual exercise, visit the restored 1926 Fire Tower. It’s located atop one of the highest peaks in the Red House Area. The tower is open to the public most days during the summer. I guarantee when you climb to the top you get a good workout and a spectacular view. Thunder Rocks is another oddity. These natural eroded stone have strange shapes that appear like mythical creatures to visitors. You can get up really close and climb them. The picnic shelters are large and covered and provide good fire pits for barbequing. If you want to spend more than a day at the park, there are 3 -46- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ April, 2019

campgrounds with 424 campsites accommodating everything from tents to large RVs, 375 cabins, and three group camps.

There are a lot of good reasons to venture out of the park to explore the surrounding area. The Amish Trail offers a look at a unique way of life. This Amish community moved here from Pennsylvania because they wanted to hold to more of the old ways. You will find many different kinds of shops and restaurants that show their way of life. There are farmers that sell mouth-watering produce, skilled quilt makers, toy shops, even a single-woman candy maker and more. Their farms, church and small school house offer wonderful photo ops but the people prefer not to be photographed. One caution, bring cash as they will not accept credit cards. You can learn about another different life style at the Seneca Nations Cultural Center. Their native dances are passed down from generation to generation. The center is huge and tells of everything from their creation myths to how the United States government took a large part of their land, not back in frontier days, but in modern times to build a dam.

Park

For those who like the high-life, there is Seneca Allegheny Casino. Their restaurants match the gaming, lots of choices. The casino hotel is top of the line. It’s just a short walk from the cultural center. After a visit here, you will think tall trees and mountains not skyscrapers when someone says “New York.”

Williamsburg Salt Spa As the first salt spa on the East Coast, the Williamsburg Salt Spa has introduced an entirely new wellness treatment to Virginians and traveling guests. Built using 15 tons of therapeutic Polish and Himalayan salts, the salt cave improves your health and overall mood as you breathe in the mineral-rich air. Specifically, these salt caves help with sinus issues that arise due to allergies or during the dreaded cold and flu season. During your visit, you’ll spend 45 minutes relaxing in comfortable reclining chairs as soothing sounds echo off the salt walls. This relaxing, traditional salt therapy treatment has been used by Europeans for hundreds of years. The air temperature inside the Salt Room is 75 F and the humidity is between 40-50%. Tons of salt create a great environment for the adults or children with respiratory problems. Salt contains elements essential to life; iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, iron, selenium, copper – these are

just some of the microelements whose lack or shortage in the body leads to serious health problems. In addition to the restorative salt cave, The Williamsburg Salt Spa offers saltwater flotation tanks for a peaceful floating experience. Floating is a perfectly calming experience having no contact points, no movement, no postural muscle action. You will be fully supported, and will expend no physical energy to maintain your position in the water. The tank can be closed to take advantage of the full experience, or it can be left open for your comfort. The water is kept at a constant temperature of 94.5 degrees, which feels warm at first, but soon becomes almost imperceptible. The line between the air and the water becomes blurred. There is also an infrared sauna and three different types of massage, including their signature Hot Salt Rock massage. To schedule an appointment please call 757-229-1022 or visit www.williamsburgsaltspa.com

Get Outside in Wyoming Mindful vacations allow families to step away from distractions on electronics and to focus on time spent with one another. No better place than Wyoming exists to roam wild and free through vast plains or over towering mountains. Regardless of individuals’ abilities, the outdoors offers benefits to mental and physical health. Teton Adaptive Sports provides options for people with different abilities to reap these benefits in Wyoming’s open air. Teton Adaptive Sports (TAS), a non-profit, offers year-round programming in climbing, camping, cycling, mountain biking, hiking, paddling, alpine and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating/ sled hockey for children and adults who visit or reside in the Tetons. Ryan Burke and the staff are dedicated to helping athletes with all kinds of disabilities experience the outdoors and push their boundaries. Ryan Burke, a board member and volunteer with Teton Adaptive Sports, an organization committed to improving the quality of life for athletes with disabilities, explains it like this: “There’s this place where their desire to do what everyone else does meets the opportunity, and Teton Adaptive Sports in Wyoming provides that place, that kind of magical feeling in the air, that lets people reach their full potential.” Thanks to committed instructors, volunteers and donors, Teton Adaptive Sports continues to help families and individuals create life-changing experiences in northwestern Wyoming. The staff at Teton Adaptive Sports commits their time to learning more about people with different abilities during trainings. “I’ve been in Wyoming for the last 15 years getting people with disabilities out into the wilderness

and seeing what people are capable of,” Ryan Burke, a board member and volunteer with Teton Adaptive Sports, said. People with different abilities often face financial burdens, so Teton Adaptive Sports also offers scholarships that supplement the cost for their skiing adventures. This makes it possible for families to experience an adventure together, sometimes for the first time! Fox reflected on one such family who visited Jackson with three teenagers. One of them used a wheelchair and was nonverbal. They wanted Teton Adaptive Sports to do something with their son while the rest of the family went skiing. The staff member who answered the phone offered to take him skiing. The family felt hesitant about Teton Adaptive Sports’ offer but decided to let him take ski lessons with one of their instructors. The family came and went throughout his lessons. “At the end of the week, all three kids and the parents skied Après Vous chairlift for the whole afternoon; taking runs with their brother who had never been out skiing with them before,” Fox reminisced. “The parents told us with tears in their eyes that they were not aware that their son could do so much. And that when they got home, they were going to find out what existed for him to do there.” People who prefer an individualized experience may give Teton Adaptive Sports a call to design their own, unique experience.
