Up Close: From the Editor

I love Rags to Riches stories. They inspire me to keep trying. Most are narrations of how the successful people worked their way through problem after problem until something clicked. They became known for their talent, invention or service and celebrity status sets in. I’ve learn the rich and the famous don’t give up easily. They learn from their mistakes and continue on the journey toward their rise to success. One of this month’s special themes is “behind the scenes.” I wanted to dig deeper into the backgrounds of attractions to find the reason for their popularity. What are all the parts that make up what tourists see in the forefront? Watch “Saturday Night Live” from behind the scenes as it is performed and recorded for television. Find out how to obtain tickets. Details are on page 18. Contributing editor from American Roads and Global Highways, Kathleen Walls, paints a detailed picture of what goes on behind the oldest continuous outdoor drama in the U.S. See page 20 for the full story. Places to Go editor, Lisa Pickett, accompanied me to Mt. Airy, North Carolina, the home town of Andy Griffith. We learned the small town of Mayberry in his regular television show was patterned after this town - not the other way around. There actually WAS a Wally’s Service Station where Andy frequented to buy a bottle of pop and catch up on town news. There really WAS a friendly town drunk who would help with anything until after work on Friday nights. See this full account on page 14. We would like for you to share your behind the scenes experiences by emailing us at editor@weekenderextended.com. Until next time with “All Things Food” featured in the September issue, happy exploring.

Education Adventures Galore in College Tow University of Virginia Charlottesville, VA

The music scene is fertile here B.D.M.B.—that is, before the Dave Matthews Band, which formed in Charlottesville in the early 1990s. These days, alternative rock, country, and reggae acts—as well as, of course, jam bands—get crowds moving at the Charlottesville Pavilion, the Paramount Theater, and even Scott Stadium, where U2 arrives in October. But the best performances may lurk along the brick sidewalks of the postcard-perfect downtown, in tiny venues like Miller’s, a former drugstore that’s now known for jazz and blues. When the music’s over, be sure to get a good look at the Thomas Jefferson– planned campus and explore a Blue Ridge Mountain trail. A dining option: Matthews, who was born in Johannesburg, might enjoy the “boerie burgers” at the Shebeen, a South African restaurant.

By Savanna Mosley Cannaan Valley Resort is a four-season destination located in West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains. It is a very inviting resort that has a cozy at-home feel as soon as you walk in. The lobby displays a huge fireplace that remained lit during our entire stay. When you look through the lobby the back of the main lodge window from floor to ceiling frames picturesque views of the mountain. The staff was friendly and helpful at all times. The rooms were spacious and clean. Behind the main lodge were many sitting areas and fire pits you could sit down and just take in the views of the surrounding mountains. The resort features skiing on one of the highest ski mountains east of the Rockies, golf, meeting space, newly renovated rooms and an array of other adventures, like hiking, biking and swimming. The weather was not perfect while we were there which concerned us a little at first. But everything on the resort is so easy to get to that we were able to get out and enjoy all of the amenities without having to worry about weather. When weather does permit, be sure to try out the Slide Tube Ride. Or try your climbing skills on the climbing wall. Test your aim on clay pigeon targets at the beautiful range or play a round of golf. The indoor facilities were also extensive. Overall this was the perfect place for a weekend get away. I would, and already have, recommended this quaint mountain resort, with a luxurious feel, to friends and family for their next family getaway. es, Mount Airy is the home of Andy Griffith and most visitors are attracted to this friendly little city for that reason alone. However, after visiting all the landmarks and soaking in the fond memories of his television show, then you can enjoy mixing in some of the current attractions. During the summer, a “Cool Cars and Rods” cruise-in is held downtown on the third Saturday of each month. During the day of the car show, you will also find musicians gathered in several locations to perform. Stroll along the downtown streets and see hand-painted guitar sculptures by local artists representing a connection to the great mountain music from the area. On Saturday morning, a bluegrass radio show is broadcast from the historic Earle Theatre. WPAQ shares the best in bluegrass, old time string music, and bluegrass gospel with its listeners. At 11 a.m., the house lights dim, a bright red “on the air” electric sign lights up, the emcee welcomes the audience, and another weekly edition of the Merry-Go-Round begins. All this activity is bound to make a person hungry. So a perfect ending to a perfect day is dining at the chef’s table at the Old North State Winery. Founded in 2002 by Ben Webb, Old North State Winery is unlike any other

winery in North Carolina. Today, Old North State Winery serves as one of the leading tourism destinations in the Yadkin Valley. It is housed in a former Hardware store built in 1890 on Main Street. Ben and his wife Ellie have successfully created a fun, hip, up-beat atmosphere combining wine tasting tours, a cool ambiance, outstanding food, live entertainment and events to create a true entertainment and dining destination. The winery still has the original pressed tin ceilings and solid oak floors from when it was originally built. Dining is available for lunch and dinner featuring locally grown and freshly prepared specials by world-renowned chef Chris Wishart. The friendly and efficient service was a welcome bonus as we were immediately ushered to our table and presented with our drinks from our waitress, Bethany. While the menu presented several tempting options, we opted for the chef’s special. Our appetizer serving of fried green tomatoes was quite enough for both as we wanted to save room for the main course. These were not your average southern dish, however. They were fried to perfection and the flavor was the best I’ve exeriences. If this was any introduction to what was to come next, I knew we were in for a treat. And we were! Behind the Scenes At: Saturday Night Live has broadcast live from New York City since 1975. More than a late-night comedy and variety show, it’s an international phenomenon. SNL’s sketches comment on the latest in pop culture and politics, and sometimes shape the way the public sees them (your impression of the last several presidents may actually be that of an SNL cast member’s impression). Even in a new era of media fragmentation, a spot as musical guest on the show heralds a new, exciting phase in an artist’s career. And though the show broadcasts live from coast to coast, there’s plenty of reason for you to want to be there in person at 30 Rockefeller Center when it all goes down. How can you do it? Read on for details.

Getting Tickets in Advance - Saturday Night Live distributes tickets

through a lottery, and they only allow entries one month out of the year. To enter, send an email to SNL Tickets during August (in advance of the upcoming season). In the email, explain why you’re a fan of the show and want to be part of the studio audience. Do not request a specific date. One email per household is allowed. Winners will each receive two tickets for a specific show date and performance (dress rehearsal or live show). You will be notified only if you are selected.

Getting Tickets on the Day of the Show

Missed out on the lottery? You still have hope. SNL distributes standby tickets (one per person) on the West 48th Street side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza at 7am on the mornings of the tapings. You can choose between the 8pm dress rehearsal and the 11:30pm live taping, though you’re not guaranteed admission. Fans generally start lining up very early— sometimes even on the Friday before the show—so only opt for the standby line if you’re ready for a test of endurance without a certain return.

Where to Go

30 Rockefeller Plaza (bet. Fifth and Sixth Aves. and W. 49th and W. 50th Sts.)

When to Get There

Arrive no later than 7:15pm for the 8pm dress rehearsal, or 10:45pm for the 11:30pm live show.

How to Get Merch

You can buy Saturday Night Live souvenirs at The Shop at NBC Studios. It’s at 30 Rockefeller Center, the same building where SNL films.

What to Do Nearby

Midtown is a busy neighborhood with tons to do, see and eat. Rockefeller Center alone has enough to keep you busy in the hours before you get in line for a taping -20- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2018

Monthly Feature:

Behind the Scen Outdoor dramas are such fun to watch but do you ever stop to think of all that goes on behind the scenes? I recently visited the Outer Banks and had, not one, but two visits behind the scenes of The Lost Colony, America’s longest running outdoor drama. For those who have forgotten that lightly touched-on subject in history of America’s first English colony, The Lost Colony tells that story. It’s performed in song, dance and action at Waterside Theater, right where those first colonists landed on Albemarle Sound. The play written by Pulitzer-winning author Paul Green is now in its 81st year. A backstage tour is offered before the play begins and is a wonderful way to get the feel of the play. Some of the actors meet you at the gate and bring you backstage to see how things work. Emma and Olivia were my guides. I have also taken a backstage tour before the play opened for its run this year so I really got a good look at backstage stuff. The play begins with the Native Americans meeting the English explorers for the first time. Their costumes are quite authentic thanks to John White, the colony’s governor and father of Virginia Dare, first English child born in America. He was an artist who did many watercolors and sketches of the clothing, rituals and customs of the na-

Lost Colony Continued... tives. Bill Coleman, CEO of the play, took us on a backstage tour and brought us into the costume building. We watched the busy costume designers who were able to recreate the native costumes based on John White’s paintings. Their costume designer, William Ivy Long, has won six Tonys so you are looking at some real works of art here. There are scenes set in Elizabeth I’s court and her costume and the English lords and ladies are very elaborate. You would wonder how the queen is even able to sit on her throne. It looks like she could hide a regiment of soldiers under that skirt. Her costume weighs about 40 pounds. The English soldier’s helmets are totally accurate and heavy. We got to try on one and wondered how anyone could stand to wear that much weight on their heads for long. Charity Sellers, the costume shop manager told us, “A full armor weights about 48 ponds. You have to have a good body for this.” Bill told us some interesting facts I never would have considered about putting on this play. In the earliest days of the

-24- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2018

show he said, “The natives are wrapped in blankets waiting to go onstage. The settlers with heavier costumes are happy. By mid July, the settlers are sweating and the natives are happy and cool.” When it goes over 90% they have a heat protocol where they remove the capes and helmets. On extremely windy days the costumes are changed; some of the feathers and scenery pieces that might blow away and become dangerous are removed. Another thing he said they had to explain to the IRS why they claimed vodka and condoms as a business expense. “The condoms were used to protect the mike packs. It keeps rain and sweat off. We could not dry clean all this stuff. They take a costume and turn it inside out and spray it with vodka and water and put it out in the sun to dry.” Bill explained about the Actor Technicians. It takes 19 days to put the show together; during this time Actor Technicians, who will have small roles during production, do the technical work. They construct sets and move scenery during the play. When you walk backstage before a pro-

duction you see them busily wheeling the queen’s throne around and pushing market carts that will be seen in the Plymouth scene in England. The Waterside Theater seats 1500 people. When Emma and Olivia brought us though the theater, they pointed out a plaque marking where President Franklin Roosevelt sat. Being in a wheel chair he could not sit in the regular audience seats. What many people may not know is that Andy Griffith began his acting career as a player in The Lost Colony while he was in college. When we stopped at the armory show Emma mentioned that fact. Olivia had the technician working the shop bring out the actual breastplate Andy Griffin wore when he played Sir Walter Raleigh. The stage is directly in front of Albemarle Sound. There is a large wooden walkway where sets can be moved around and people walk. An interesting item behind here is a track resembling a single train track. There’s a clever prop consisting of a type of cart with wheels that fit the rail and tall masts extending above it. When the settlers sail into Albemarle Sound to start the colony, the audience sees the upper portion as it appears as if a ship had just sailed in behind the greenery. It is used again when John White leaves the desperate colony to return to England for supplies. The colonists wave him off in good cheer from the fort ramparts little knowing it will be three years before he can return and by then they will have disappeared into history, leaving just a few mysterious letters craved into a tree and one word on a post as a clue to what befell them. Watching the play after seeing all the backstage magic makes it doubly interesting.

The Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast in Salisbury Mills is taking a ‘literal’ approach to breakfast in a nod toward Book Lovers Day this August SALISBURY MILLS - The Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast is turning to its menu to honor Book Lovers Day on August 9th with a novel-inspired breakfast. “We host a lot of avid readers and have many nooks and crannies where guests like to relax with a good book,” said Dena Finneran, who co-owns the Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast with her husband, John. “August brings such great weather, we’ll often find guests reading outdoors in our shaded patio or pergola, so this underrated holiday is actually a really great fit for us.” The bed and breakfast cooks a full threecourse breakfast each morning, complete with personalized newspaper-style place settings. On August 9th guests will either find a nod toward Oliver Twist or Little Women on their plates; the menu will depend on several factors, such as guests’ dietary restrictions, weather, etc. If it’s Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist represented at the table, the breakfast would be a hearty oatmeal, for the line in the book: ‘Please sir, can I have some more?’ which refers to porridge. The Louisa May Alcott, Little Women-inspired, breakfast would be sausage, egg, and orange, to fit with the iconic scene in the book where the March girls take

Another goal is to be involved in giving back to the local community. “Our main goal is to preserve a part of our heritage for all generations and historians to enjoy,” said Tom Cherry, longtime member of the organization. The public is invited to come and see all the antique machinery used as the days gone by like; plows, disks, combines, planters, cultivators and many more. Not only will you be able to view the antique machinery, you will also get the opportunity to watch these machines operate, Cherry explained. Witness the saw milling with the almighty Steam engines and other various shows such as the spark show or wood carving. After enjoying all the displays

of the antique machinery you can stroll through the flea market booths and you can purchase a variety of items including antiques, arts, crafts and collectibles. There is an antique tractor pull on Thursday and Friday nights at 6 p.m. This is an event for farm tractors made before 1959 to test their pulling power and show off their restoration. This pull is a low gear percentage pull. There are other tractor games and theme-oriented competitions scheduled throughout the weekend.Another major highlight is the annual parade of antique power on Saturday. You can play games, enjoy the old-time music, or even compete in an old-fashioned fiddle contest or horse and pony pull. Even the kids will have special games scheduled just for them on

Food Fun

I’ve been cleaning out drawers. Yes, it is just exactly as uninteresting as it sounds. But today was an exceptionally hot day so I chose to stay inside in order to fully appreciate the wonder of air conditioning. In the process, I came across lots of crinkled scraps of paper with quickly scrawled (and therefore undecipherable) notes to myself, a fair amount of expired coupons and even a few warranties for items we no longer own. Along the way, I discovered there are several ways to approach a job such as this. I pull everything out and put back only the items I need or want. Unfortunately, this method has a tendency to leave behind a large pile of leftovers which haunt me until a decision can be made about what to do with them. Option two is to quickly rearrange the mess. Or my personal favorite: light a bomb under it, call it good and go take a nap. Today was a fun-filled day of sorting through my craft drawer. That’s correct. It took all day for one drawer. (I have a lot of projects.) I sorted them into finished, almost finished, not quite finished, a long way from being finished, in progress, barely started, not even started yet and “When is it ever going to be done?” That’s an excellent question, especially when it comes to my recipe collection. I decided almost two years ago to compile my favorites into a collection which could possibly be made into a cookbook. I even have a title selected. Work on that project progressed well for several months then had to be put on hold for some reason I have long since forgotten. I gave thought (very briefly) to the idea of working on it again. The idea has not been abandoned but it is really much better suited to wintertime when it is too cold to leave the house. In other words, “NOT NOW!” It’s just too hot. This month’s recipe is perfect for this time of year when I refuse to heat up my kitchen by turning on the oven. -34- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2018

It is fast, easy and tastes great! I know there are lots of variations circulating among cooks, but over the decades this one has stood the test of time. If you need something quick for serving to company or even for packing in lunches once school starts again, here is the version that is our family favorite.

QUICK NO-BAKE CHOCOLATE COOKIES In heavy saucepan, boil together for 1 and 1/2 minutes: 1 stick margarine 1/2 c. milk 2 c. sugar Remove from heat. Add: 1 tsp. vanilla 6 Tbsp. cocoa 3 c. quick oats Mix well. Working quickly, drop by tablespoon onto waxed paper. Allow to cool. Enjoy! Yup, this one is a keeper and definitely going to be included in the cookbook, whenever I get back to that project. Until then, I have lots to do to keep me busy. It might not be very interesting, but at least it’s cool.

OUTLAW COUNTRY ARTIST RELEASES NEW SINGLE,

NASHVILLE– The song is off his upcoming album, Still Country, Still King: A Tribute To George Jones. “‘Sinners and Saints’ is a song for people to listen to and reflect on their relationship with God,” Carothers says. “It’s a good ‘close to home’ type story that’s got it all: jail, church, adultery, gossip, and redemption. To me, this fits perfectly into this whole George Jones tribute because the music and songs are about people with a clear definition of right and wrong and the moral conflict surrounding decisions that we make. Afterall, we’re all sinners and saints, depending on the moment!” “Millennials, Gen Xers, Boomers… everybody will be two-stepping by the end of ‘Sinners and Saints’. James Carothers summons the soul of George Jones with a song we’re sure the ol’ Possum himself wouldn’t have passed up! Carothers… country to the bone!” - Cathy Martindale, Racin’ Country syndicated radio show. “It was great to hear some true traditional country. James did

George’s ‘Sinners and Saints’ proud and if the rest of the album is as good as the single I’m sure George Jones fans all over the world are in for a treat.” Bob Guerra, New Music Nashville Carothers will host an album listening party at The George Jones Museum in Nashville Aug. 6. His album will officially be released Sept. 7. Keep up with James on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, and on his website at www.jamescarothers. com. Mixing together Tennessee twang and southern storytelling, James Carothers makes throwback country music for modern times. George Jones’ own widow, Nancy, personally hired Carothers for the gig, giving him the opportunity to make a living playing music. James now plays several shows at venues in downtown Nashville each week when he’s not on the road. In 2018, James was nominated for an Ameripolitan Award in the “Outlaw Male” category. His hit song “Back to Hank” has received over four million views on Facebook and his Spotify and Apple Music artist profiles have been streamed over one million times combined.
