Up Close: From the Editor

We’ve survived another year. Yes, we are still here. And it is time to keep on keeping on. At the beginning of a new year, I have so many unanswered questions. I still haven’t found out who let the dogs out or where the beef is... I still don’t know how to get to Sesame Street, and in this age of technology, why doesn’t Dora just use Google Maps? Why do all flavors of fruit loops taste exactly the same, or just how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop? Why are eggs and light bulbs packaged in flimsy containers, but batteries are secured in plastic that’s tough as nails? Ever buy scissors? You need scissors to cut into the packaging of scissors! I still don’t understand why there is Braille on drive up ATM’s or why “abbreviated” is such a long word. Why is there a “D” in “fridge” but not in “refrigerator”....Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavoring. yet dish-washing liquid is made with real lemons? Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? And why do you have to “put your two cents worth in”... but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”...where’s that extra penny going to anyway? Why does the Alphabet Song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have the same tune, and why did you just try to sing those two songs? And just what or who is Victoria’s secret? What would you do for a Klondike bar when you know as soon as you bite into it, it’s gonna fall apart? Does she or doesn’t she...what? Why do you care if I got milk? And do you really think I am this witty?!?!?!? I actually got this from a friend, who stole it from her brother’s girlfriend’s uncle’s cousin’s baby momma’s doctor who lived next door to an old classmate’s mail man! So you are certainly free to share with others and enjoy your day!! This was just too funny not to post. P.S. We all want to know just which state you look for first and read so we can provide more information. Until next month...

Happy New Year; & Enjoy our Revised Website! Kathy Barnett, Managing Editor

Missing: Gone, But Not Forgotten By Kathleen Walls

Based on an actual abduction that has never been solved filled with drugs, violence, and lies. “Missing-- Gone but not Forgotten.” is about the abduction of a little girl in a rural Florida community. Drugs, family feuds, underage sex, and lots of lies abound. Since this is a fictionalized version, my biggest challenge is to keep it exciting and still true to the real life case upon which the story is based. Another big challenge is when I have my protagonists give their opinions as to what really happened to the missing child, is to be able to back up their ideas with facts that they have already learned. In their investigation, The real life case has never been solved. I lived in the county the abduction occurred at one time, and followed the case from day one, so it feels very personal. which gave me the perfect topic. January is the time of year designated for focusing on all things new. For most it is resolutions, but this year, I plan to start some new traditions. In fact, I’ve already begun. I spent Christmas in Kentucky to assist with tornado recovery. My job was a support position taking care of the workers. Some were working hard physically while others were counseling with hurting people which was emotionally taxing. The physical support is done through providing hot, nutritious meals to anyone who needs one. The emotional need was obvious

because of the holidays. Resources were limited, but with a little scrounging, borrowing and creativity, a few of us were able to celebrate the most unusual Christmas ever. Yes, it sounds odd to put together a dinner party in the middle of a disaster, but for the ones present, it was worth it. When everyone else went home for the holidays, sixteen strangers pooled their resources. We had a couple of widows who were happy to have someone to cook for. One volunteer decorated a few tables with leftover wrapping paper and borrowed vases of flowers. Entertainment was provided by a few corny riddles and off-key carols. But it didn’t matter. From a first year-college student away from home for the first time, to a chaplain providing spiritual guidance whenever and wherever needed, to a mother-daughter team who were only present for two days so someone else could go home, the one thing we all had in common was sacrifice of time away from home and family. Or was it? I don’t think so. And my new magnet is and will be a constant reminder of such. On second thought, I know exactly where is the best place to put it: front and center. After all, it is correct. Together, we make family.

When she’s not teaching school, cooking or baking, playing keyboard for church, directing a kitchen team for Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, or organizing “things to do” articles, Ms. Derden is busy writing books. Places to Go

For the Winter In Your Starting off 2022 by visiting a new city, town, or area of the country, awakens the senses and sets a tone of adventure for the year ahead.

The Holiday Rambler brand has assembled a collection of five “new” cities and potentially “boundary-pushing” activities for 2022 travel. Holiday Rambler is a Class A RV brand within REV Recreation Group, Inc., which is a subsidiary of REV Group, Inc. Please note, while each activity has been researched, be sure to confirm hours of operation, advance ticketing requirements, and other relevant details ahead of time.

New Smyrna Beach, FL

Spending January in 70° F weather has its perks but that’s just part of what makes New Smyrna Beach especially inviting. The city also boasts 17 miles of white sandy beaches and wave action that’s great for surfing.

-12- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

Some “new-to-you” activities can include: Fresh-caught Dinner – Since New Smyrna Beach is located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon, both saltwater and freshwater fishing are available. Book a charter with an experienced captain to catch an oh-so fresh seafood dinner. Many local restaurants offer a “catch and cook” option where the chef will prepare your fish almost any way you like it. A Trio of Water Views – A visit to Smyrna Dunes Park delivers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River, and Ponce de Leon Inlet. The park has two miles of wide, elevated, handicapped accessible boardwalk, along with access to the beach. Florida’s Tallest Lighthouse – Climb 175 feet for a spectacular, sweeping view of coastal Florida. The world-famous Ponce Inlet Lighthouse was constructed in 1887 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1998. The site includes all the original structures, including the homes of the principal keeper and first and second assistant keepers. On January 17, the lighthouse hosts its monthly “Climb to the Moon.” Get spectacular views of the sunset and full moon, along with a private tour with a lighthouse keeper. NASCAR’s Prestigious Track – The Daytona International Speedway, which is just is 15 miles from New Smyrna Beach, is an iconic track that hosts the internationally known Daytona 500. A track tour includes a: visit to the start/finish line; close-up view of the pit stalls; photos in Gatorade Victory Lane; stunning view of the trioval

is the best-selling author who wrote the Vampire Chronicles series. Set fears aside and book a nighttime walking tour that shares the city’s “dark side” and takes visitors to above-ground cemeteries, haunted locations, and voodoo shrines. Boiled Crawfish – Whatever name you use – crayfish, crawfish, crawdads, or mudbugs – the crustaceans are synonymous with New Orleans. Crawfish are in season from January through July and can be served boiled, sauteed, baked, or fried. However, locals insist boiled is the best. Crawfish boils abound throughout New Orleans so get courageous and make a reservation. Swamp Tours – Explore the watery world of Louisiana’s swamps and bayous aboard an airboat, skiff, or kayak. Travel through channels edged by cypress trees dripping with Spanish moss and learn how the waterways still provide a living for locals. See alligators, nutria, wild hogs, and other wildlife. RVers can spend the night at the French Quarter RV Resort or Reunion Lake Luxury RV Campground, which is an hour from New Orleans

New Orleans, LA

This French, Creole, and Cajun city literally beckons travelers to try something new. NOLA Curiosities – The neighborhood of the French Quarter was the original city of New Orleans established by the French to control commerce on the Mississippi River. Today, it’s the epicenter for activities and eccentricities. Start with the curiosities of Jackson Square that include unusual street artists, fortune tellers, and brass bands. Visit the 200-year-old Jean Lafitte’s Old Absinthe House which became famous in the 19th century for its absinthe frappe – a mixture of absinthe and sugar water – and the popular legend that pirate Jean Lafitte met with Andrew Jackson at the establishment. Finally, it’s not a sure thing but jazz funerals are still held. Catching one is just by luck since they’re typically conducted only after the death of a significant resident or musician. Ghost Tours – New Orleans is home to two wellknown women of mystery. Marie Laveau was a powerful voodoo priestess from the 19th century and Anne Rice

New Braunfels, TX

Founded in 1845 and known for its German heritage, New Bruenfels is in Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin and provides a gateway to exciting adventures. Please Turn to Next Page. . . January, 2022 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -13-

Winter RV Travels - Cont. Fly Fishing – From December to February, Texas Parks & Wildlife stocks more than 20,000 rainbow trout in the Guadalupe River and Canyon Tailrace. Action Angler, a stream-side fly shop and guide service, provides seasoned pros, rods, flies, waders, and boots for fishing on the Guadalupe River. For those who aren’t quite ready for fly fishing, nature tour float trips are available. Spelunking – At 180 feet below ground, Natural Bridge Caverns is Texas’ largest show cave with dramatic stalagmites, stalactites, flowstones, chandeliers, and soda straws formed by minerals in water drops. For the bold, a Discovery Adventure Tour delivers an “off trail” experience in an undeveloped section of the cave. Gear is provided but be prepared to get muddy while crawling, wiggling, and climbing to explore deep sections of the cave. For those who’d like a more predictable visit, a walking path tour is available. Craft Breweries – Due to its German heritage, New Braunfels has a long history of brewing that includes the original New Braunfels Brewing Company built on the banks of the Comal River in 1847 by Julius Rennert. Three exceptional craft breweries include a reborn New Braunfels Brewing Company, Faust Hotel & Brewing Company, and Guadalupe Brewing Company – all of which are on the Craft Beer Trail that winds through Texas Hill Country. To be safe and responsible, book a spot on a trail shuttle bus. Country Music – Gruene Hall is the place to embrace country music. Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, Lucinda Williams, and many other legends have played at this historic honky-tonk. Built in 1878, it’s the state’s oldest continually operating dance hall and hasn’t changed much since its early days. RVers can spend the night at Hill Country Cottage & RV Resort.

New Harmony, UT

Although New Harmony is home to just 200-some residents, it’s the ideal place for a New Year’s selfie. Who doesn’t want “new harmony” in 2022? Plus, its setting is picture perfect since it’s surrounded by the peaks of Pine Valley Mountain and close to some of the best recreational areas in the United States. Water Hiking – Kanarra Falls, which is approximately 10 miles from New Harmony, is a spectacular adventure trek that requires stamina, agility, and surefootedness -14- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

and, in return, delivers rushing waterfalls in red rock slot canyons. The canyoneering hike includes walking through and along a stream bed, climbing a 15-foot-ladder, and scaling a large boulder. All the effort is worth it to see a natural water slide and pool and two sets of waterfalls in slot canyons. Advance tickets are required, winter hours are limited, and cold weather gear (including neoprene socks) are a must. Double Arch Alcove – Located in the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park, the Taylor Creek Trail is a five-mile roundtrip hike up a “finger” canyon that leads to Double Arch Alcove. The cave-like formation features a palette of beautifully colored streaks thanks to water that seeps through the porous Navajo sandstone. The trail also includes two historic cabins from the 1903’s before the Kolob area became part of Zion. Kolob Canyons is smaller than Zion Canyon but that also means it’s not as busy. Rugged Horseback Riding – Experience the beauty of

southern Utah on horseback. Book a ride that ranges from 1 ½ hours to six. The pace and scenery of the rides can vary from a demanding ride in the steep and rugged Zion Mountain country to a more leisurely trip through the valley to admire the peaks from below. RVers can spend the night at Zion River Resort - RV Park & Campground.

Newport Beach, CA

Those looking for marine adventures will adore Newport Beach. Take sailing or surfing lessons, rent a paddle board, or simply stroll the beach, it’s all possible at Newport Beach. Whale Watching – December through April is a prime time to see gray whales as they travel 12,000 miles round trip from the Arctic to the lagoons of Baja California to calve and breed. Humpback, Fin, and Minke whales can be seen year-round, along with dolphin megapods with more than 1,000 in each pod. Electric Boats & Gondolas – Known as the first and finest electric boat since 1970, Duffy Boats are available to leisurely cruise Newport Harbor and take in the beauty of the coast. For a romantic cruise for two, book a gondola. Options range from a casual pizza cruise to a dinner cruise with a three-course meal. 1919 Ferry – A mere $1.25 secures a one-way ticket for a quick ride on the Balboa Island Ferry. Ferry service was established in 1919 to span the 800 feet between the peninsula and Balboa Island. Island activities include a stroll on Marine Avenue that’s dotted with chic coastal shops and quaint island restaurants. Don’t miss the area’s iconic Frozen Banana treat that’s been a signature for 75 years. In fact, the banana stand in the sitcom Arrested Development was located on Balboa Island. Tidepools – Visit Crystal Cove State Park and its more than three miles of pristine uninterrupted coastline. Dur-

ing low tide, check out four tidepool viewing areas – Reef Point, Rocky Bight, Pelican Point, and Treasure Cove – to spot bat stars, chestnut cowries, purple sea urchins, and other amazing creatures. The tidepools are Marine Protected Areas so picking up or moving animals is prohibited. The area also includes Crystal Cove Historic District, an enclave of 46 vintage rustic coastal cottages originally built in the 1920s and 1930s nestled around the mouth of Los Trancos Creek. It is one of the last remaining examples of early 20th century Southern California coastal development. RVers can spend the night at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina. Celebrate Mardis Gras Mardus Gras Trivia

What is Mardi Gras? Do you know the meaning of krewe? Or where to get one-of-a-kind beads? For different people it’s different things—an event, an idea, a day, a way of life, piece of history, state holiday, or a million parades and countless memories. Think you know Mardi Gras? That it’s all about booze and beads? Think again! Mardi Gras is coming back to Louisiana in 2022, and while things may look different in communities across the state than in years’ past, we can guarantee that a good time will still be had by all! The Carnival season kicks off with Twelfth Night on January 6 (the first day one can respectably consume king cake!) and culminates with Mardi Gras Day (Fat Tuesday) on March 1. -22- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

Whether you find yourself wrangling for beads and eating jambalaya on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans or chasing chickens and enjoying a piping hot bowl of gumbo in Mamou, the Carnival season will be marked by the same sense of celebration and hospitality that Louisiana is known for around the world. And even for those New Orleans Mardi Gras veterans who think they may know all there is to know about Carnival, there is an entire state of celebrations waiting to be discovered. Explore to find the one that suits you best, including family-friendly parades and events all around the state! Find out more about Carnival season in Louisiana at LouisianaTravel.com!

1. Carnival is a Season; Mardi Gras is the last Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and ushers in 40 days of best behavior during Lent. “Carnival” is the season that begins on the Feast of Epiphany. A krewe (pronounced the same way as “crew”) is an organization that puts on a parade and/or a ball for the Carnival season. 2. Your Dog Will Love Mardi Gras. They have their very own parades in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Northshore and more. 3. Mardi Gras is for Families. There are many activities and Mardi Gras parades that are family-friendly. Family parade-watching spots include St. Charles and Napoleon Streets. 4. The Best Ways to Get Parade Goods Aren’t Always Obvious. Head to the end of the parade. You’ll be showered by effervescent float-riders with a single goal: chuck all bags of beads off before they get off the float themselves. 5. You Never Know What They’ll Throw. 6. The Best Parades Aren’t Necessarily the Biggest. 7. Why We Throw Beads at Mardi Gras? Legend has it in the 1880s, a man dressed like Santa Claus received such fame throwing beads, that other krewes followed suit. 8. Mardi Gras has been a legal holiday in Louisiana since 1875 when the Mardis Gras Act was signed.

UP ON THE RIVER OUT ON THE TOWN

VICKSBURG-Sitting on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, this city is steeped in history and Southern culture. The vibrant downtown dining and art scene make this river city a great extended weekend destination. Vicksburg sits at the intersection of Interstate 20 and the famed U.S. Highway 61, known as the Blues Highway. Vicksburg boasts more public art than any other city in Mississippi. It is best known for its collection of 32 vivid riverfront murals painted on the flood walls of Levee Street. Downtown is also home to an assortment of shops and galleries. The Attic Gallery is the oldest independent art gallery in Mississippi, filled with folk, outsider and contemporary fine art. At the H.C. Porter Gallery mixed media originals and fine art prints of this famed Mississippi native are on display. The nearby Vicksburg National Military Park referred to as the “art park of the world,” is filled with 1,400 sculptures, monuments and architectural gems like no other. If a downtown shopping spree for more than art is in order, there is an array of local shops, boutiques and antique galleries along brick-paved Washington Street and beyond. Vicksburg’s entertainment district is a vibrant downtown scene with a variety of restaurants featuring local specialties, regional favorites and even popular global choices. Diners can make their choices from Southern comfort food to haute cuisine. For a relaxing evening and a view, 10 South Rooftop Bar & Grill (1301 Washington Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi 39138) is a roof-top bar and grill and a local favorite for sunset happy hours overlooking the river. The new Relish Bistro, with its Italian influenced menu, joins classic favorites like Solly’s Hot Tamales, a star of the Mississippi Delta Hot Tamale Trail. Cottonwood Public House is Vicksburg’s local brew pub

offering craft cocktails, woodfired pizza and local craft beer. Just blocks away, Anchuca offers an elegant dining experience in a classic historic home. These are just a few of the options and a local open container regulation allows visitors to explore even more with beverage in hand. The list of restaurants and entertainment venues gives visitors a reason to return for more! Vicksburg’s four casinos offer fine cuisine and nightlife, as well. Gaming, dining and entertainment are all part of the fun at these classic riverfront venues. We suggest staying overnight here. The Mississippi River provides the scenery for Vicksburg, and is the source of much of the culture, economy and lure that make Vicksburg unique. There’s no better way to soak in this city’s diverse stories than to visit one of the many museums throughout downtown. For a look back at early life on the river, the Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum paints vivid pictures of the river’s importance and its power, from its indoor exhibits to its outdoor scaled model of its flood plain. A stop at the Biedenharn Coca-Cola® Museum will share the story of why Vicksburg was the first location to bottle Coca-Cola in 1894. The Old Court House Museum and the Old Depot Museum share stories and display the artifacts of days gone by. The Vicksburg Heritage Walking Trails offer a variety of ways to enjoy the history and architecture here. Many of Vicksburg’s historic homes offer home tours, as well.

Things to Do:

Go on a Borges Sleigh and Carriage Ride

Borges Family Sleigh Rides has been offering Belgian draft horse-powered rips for nearly 50 years—because riding sleighs is way more fun than singing about them. What better way to enjoy Lake Tahoe’s storybook scenery than on a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh ride? With Tahoe as the ultimate playground for outdoor enthusiasts, wind down after a day in the mountains and kick up the relaxation a notch with a carriage or sleigh ride in Lake Tahoe. With locations in both South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village, the Borges family offers unmatched outings for couples and families alike. During the summer months, riders delight in taking carriage rides in South Lake Tahoe for a tour around the sights near Stateline or postcard-perfect Sand Harbor. In the wintertime, wheels are swapped for runners as the horses hitch up to an old-fashioned sleigh, allowing guests to dash through the snow to their heart’s content. Borges Sleigh and Carriage Rides began all the way back in 1965 when Sam Borges entered his son, David, in the South Lake Tahoe Dodge dealership’s raffle for a Shetland pony. To their excitement, David was the lucky recipient of this -32- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

extraordinary prize, and so it began. Winter Adventures in By Mona Mesereau

Renowned as a destination for summer vacationers for multiple decades and generations, Cody Yellowstone in the northwest corner of Wyoming offers some compelling reasons to visit in winter. “Whether you have two weeks or two hours, we have a winter activity for you,” said Ryan Hauck, director of the Park County Travel Council, the marketing arm of Cody Yellowstone. “And you’re likely to share a chairlift, trout stream or trail with locals as they enjoy our offerings and recharge their batteries.” Wyoming’s rugged landscape, mountainous terrain and open spaces are perfect for winter adventures. Here are some examples:

Alpine Skiing.

Sleeping Giant is one of the oldest alpine ski areas in the country. First opened in the winter of 1936-37 and situated just outside of Yellowstone National Park in the stunning Absaroka Mountain Range, the hill features 900 vertical feet and 184 acres of skier and rider-accessible terrain. The resort has a total of 49 runs, a base elevation of 6,619 feet, vertical drop of 810 feet and average snowfall of 150 inches. An interesting feature is a terrain park with quarter pipes, rails, boxes and jumps. The terrain park – designed for both skiers and snowboarders – remains one of only a few in the country that was constructed almost entirely of materials found on the hill. New options at Sleeping Giant for the 21/22 season include expanded lighting for night skiing, SnoGo bikes for mountain bike enthusiasts and tubing for the family thrill seekers.

Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing.

There are more than 30 miles of groomed trails between Sleeping Giant Ski Area and Pahaska Tepee Resort at Yellowstone’s East Gate. Skiers and snowshoers can bring their own lunches or purchase a hot lunch at the Grizzly Grill located in the friendly lodge at Sleeping Giant. Equipment can be rented in town. The Wood River Valley Ski Touring Park operated by the Meeteetse Recreation District and located 22 miles southwest of Meeteetse offers more -36- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

than 15 miles of groomed trails ranging from the gentle South Fork Trail to the challenging Brown Creek Trail. There is no fee for skiing, but donations are encouraged to support trail maintenance. There are also numerous cross country ski trails located in Yellowstone National Park.

Skating

Outdoor ice-skating is available at Homesteader Park in Powell, and indoor skating is offered at the Victor J. Riley Arena and Community Events Center in Cody. Both locations provide ice skate rentals. Outdoor skating at Homesteader Park is equipped with night lighting and a warming house. Skate rentals and concessions are available on the weekends.

Snowmobiling.

Winter adventurers who like to feel the rush of

n Cody Yellowstone Travelers need not go far before they are in prime wildlife viewing territory. The road from Cody to the East Gate of Yellowstone is full of wildlife-viewing opportunities. It is not unusual to spot moose, bison, elk, eagles and bighorn sheep.

Ice Climbing

cool air on their faces will find a special thrill in the region. There are plenty of places to explore throughout the forestlands outside the park borders on snowmobiles throughout the Beartooth Mountains. Gary Fales Outfitting provides winter snowmobile excursions inside Yellowstone National Park.

Catch – and release – a trout.

Cody Yellowstone features some of the best blue-ribbon trout stream fishing in North America, and the fish do not know it is winter. Professional fishing guides and outfitters accommodate anglers of any ability.

Ice routes can be found in the North and South Forks of the Shoshone, the region to the west of the town. The South Fork of the Shoshone is home to the highest concentration of frozen waterfalls in the United States, with more than 200 climbable pitches within a 10-mile radius. Cody is home to plenty of long moderate and advanced ice routes offering a memorable experience for climbers of all abilities. Commercially guided ice climbing made its debut in 2011 in Shoshone National Forest outside of Cody, Wyo. as the National Forest Service issued the first permits to outfitters to lead ice-climbing trips. The region is comprised of porous volcanic soil that allows for easy water seepage. The mountains receive large amounts of snow that melts into a high number of drainages. These factors result in spring-fed waterfalls that are constantly regenerating themselves and freezing into high-quality ice climbs. Climbers are still discovering new waterfalls in the region, and some have made dozens of “first ascents” over the past few years. With most of its visitation occurring during the warm weather, Cody/Yellowstone offers plenty of available accommodations during the cooler weather. It is home to an array of motels, Bed and Breakfasts, luxury hotels, boutique inns and cabins. A complete listing of lodging can be found online.

Hiking

Depending on the level of snow and the location, it is possible to enjoy a cold-weather hike with snowshoes or regular hiking boots. Cody Pathways is a system of multi-use trails surrounding the town.

Enjoy Winte Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing allows you to head out across Maine’s backcountry, whether you’re at an established ski area, with groomed trails, or at a more rustic spot like a land trust or park.

Dog Sledding

You love dogs; you love sleds. Why not combine them and cross dog sledding off your Maine bucket list, too?

Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding / Night Skiing

Downhill skiing and snowboarding are among the most popular winter sports in Maine. The snow is deep, and the ski areas run the gamut from tiny, beginner hills to region-topping monsters. Sugarloaf, Sunday River and the newly revamped and reopened Saddleback Mountain are the state’s largest, and most varied, resorts. But the state has plenty of fun midsized and smaller ski and snowboard areas as well. Night skiing and snowboarding is a tradition here. Some skiers -38- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

and riders like to expand their days on the hill by adding turns at night. Others can ski only after work. Still others show their competitive side through nighttime racing leagues. Night skiing and riding are available at Black Mountain in Rumford, Camden Snow Bowl in Camden, Lost Valley in Auburn, New Hermon Mountain in Hermon, Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Spruce Mountain in Jay, Sunday River in Newry, and Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

Fat Biking

Expand your biking season by renting one of these huge-tired beasts and hitting a snow-covered trail. Places to try it include Bethel Village Trails in Bethel Pineland Farms in New Gloucester The Sugarloaf Outdoor Center in Carrabassett Valley and Carter’s Cross Country Ski Centers in Bethel.

Ice Fishing

Just because the lakes are frozen over doesn’t mean we stop fishing. Spend the day outside (or in a cozy shanty) with family and friends, or participate

in one of the many ice fishing derbies around the state.

Snowmobiling

Maine has over 14,000 miles of spectacular snowmobile trails for sledding enthusiasts, including the well-groomed and well-marked Interconnected Trail System.

Snowshoeing

Winter can provide hours of quiet reflection and the chance for serenity. And a snowshoe adventure on winter trails can bring you your moment of Zen. Snowshoes can take you through established ski and snowshoe areas or through less-groomed parks, forests and land trusts.

Tobogganing

The U.S. National Toboggan Championships — complete with a scary course and silly costumes — are held each winter at Camden Snow Bowl. After a day of skiing or snowboarding, relax in cabin, condo or lodge. These can be a ski-in, ski-out, place at one of Maine’s resorts, or a more out-of-theway location.

er Sports in Maine

Stay Awhile

Cabins on the Lake

A cozy cabin on a beautiful Maine lake is even cozier in winter and, some attest, even more beautiful. What will you do inside your perfect snowscape? Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing come to mind. And, that toasty, crackling fire to welcome you home.

Condo on the Beach

A winter getaway with all the

comforts of home, an endless white sand or white-snowed beach. With convenient access to historic sites, galleries and shopping. And all the winter recreational activities you love, just waiting for you to say: Go. A winter condo on the beach in Maine has it all.

Resorts

There’s only one thing that can match the recreation, relaxation, natural beauty and outdoor adventure of a Maine summer

resort. Our equally wonderful winter version. Ski, snowmobile and snowboard like there’s no tomorrow. Which, of course, there is — a perfect day to enjoy the serenity of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter biking. Great accommodations, with Maine-style hospitality, always come with the territory.

A Resort Community Curate

A holistic connected living vision takes root at the Allenberry development in the valley of Cumberland County

As travel challenges continue to ease in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the opportunity to find rest and relaxation outside of our busy urban centers that is still close to home is increasingly popular. Whether it’s the Hamptons for New Yorkers or favorite spots up and down the coast or in the countryside, city dwellers have many options to explore. A new destination has recently emerged in central Pennsylvania’s bucolic Cumberland County that offers a rewarding option for those seeking an escape from urbanism that is within a two-to-three-hour drive from Philadelphia, D.C., Baltimore, and New York. The Allenberry community in Boiling Springs, PA is a development that offers resort amenities for short-term, extended, and long-term stays in a community that also includes single-family homes. The resort is fast becoming a spa and health & wellness destination because of its extensive array of biohacking, wellness, and vibrancy treatments & services. The world-class spa facility; however, is part of a bigger plan. What’s particularly noteworthy about the Allenberry community is the vision that fuels its continued growth. Mike Kennedy, a railroad investor and owner of Allenberry and its integrated housing development, The Porches of Allenberry, has his sights set on creating an environment that promotes community. The foundation for the community is a built environment and services vision that fosters a sense of connectedness between residents and visitors, their health & wellness, the natural environment, and the heritage of this special location. Kennedy subscribes to the concept of “new urbanism”, a design movement which promotes environmentally conscious walkable neighborhoods and public spaces that are accessible to diverse residents. The architecture and landscape design tenets of new -42- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

urbanism celebrate local history, climate, ecology, and building practice. “We set out to create a place that enables people to live the way they really want to live,” said Kennedy. “Today’s urban lifestyle virtually and tangibly saps our physical and mental energies. We are too easily estranged from our neighbors and nature by location and our built environment.” He adds, “Allenberry is designed to restore our vitality by helping us to authentically connect with our neighbors, continually meet new people and their diverse life journeys, embrace our wellness, and connect with the beauty of the nature around us.” To fulfill such a grand vision required bold steps to design and build a geographic environment that would be a foundation for fostering connection and wellness-based lifestyle. The property was literally laid out to form connection. The vision is to create an old-world community in the modern world and project it to the world.

At Allenberry it started with place.

It is hard to think of a more peaceful and beautiful rural location. Cumberland County, located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, has long been a popular day or weekend trip given its proximity to New York, Philadelphia, and D.C. Allenberry is located on the banks of the Yellow Breeches trout stream, regarded as hallowed ground to fly-fisherman. In fact,

ed in Nature and Wellness it is Orvis®-endorsed as a top trout fishing destination in the U.S. The river is also popular for boating, kayaking/canoeing and guided trips. The renowned Appalachian Trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine, crosses through the Cumberland Valley at its halfway point right at the Allenberry property. Currently Kennedy and his team are putting the finishing touches to the med-spa services working with a bio-hacking team from California. A range of medical services including Botox and dermal filler injectables, fat melting, micro-needling, and anti-aging treatments will join a wide range of traditional spa services and treatments. “The biohacking space is super exciting,” said Kennedy. “It’s geared around strengthening our immune system by working with our bodies at a cellular level. If the last 18 months has taught us anything, it’s about the importance of taking care of our whole self – physically and mentally – to cope with the unexpected.” The valley is bordered by the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachian Mountains and boasts the Cumberland Valley AVA wine region as well as many craft breweries, cideries and distilleries. It is a serene and stunning landscape full of rich history, charming downtowns, and welcoming store fronts. In 2017, Kennedy purchased the property set

amidst trees and rolling lawns. With the goal of creating a vibrant and active community, he and his team have created a development that includes short-term and extended-stay lodgings, flex-office space, a restaurant and café, a playhouse, centers for cultural activities such as cooking classes, and an artist-in-residence facility. There are plans for a film festival and the resort and spaces are being reimagined to have a magical feel and sense of place, which is a natural extension of the property.

Single-family homes are an important facet of Allenberry and 128 are being added as part of a three-stage

development called, “The Porches of Allenberry”. These properties will soon be joined by 160 additional residential “flats” that are being built with the grade of the land so as not to intrude further on the natural beauty. Upon completion, the residential community will have a population of more than 600 residents. The homes, together with the resort, follow a design aesthetic that respects the architectural heritage of the region. According to Kennedy, “We want to create a village where people visiting our resort for a few days will be motivated to make this their home because it is simply such a great place to live.” The lifestyle of Allenberry’s residents is designed around concierge living with priority access to all the resort’s dining, cultural, recreation, and health & wellness amenities. The community is attracting residents of all ages who value the conveniences and turnkey services of being part of a resort community and who are seeking a place that embraces neighbors getting to know one another. While this may seem to first appeal to active adults 55 and older, the community has been successful in attracting residents of all ages and seeks age diversity within the community as another way to enrich the lives of all the residents.

A Health & Wellness Destination

Allenberry may be best known today for the quality of its spa and health & wellness features – the crown jewel of the overall development and -44- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January, 2022

central to Kennedy’s vision of a community that can enhance personal vitality and wellness by restoring mental and physical energy. Allenberry may have created the most advanced biohacking spa on the planet. Cheryl, the spa’s director, says “When people feel and look better, they live longer and have a vibrant quality of life. The human connection we foster here at Allenberry takes it even further.” The service and treatment menu is extensive offering bio-hacking and super human protocols, a med spa, and traditional as well as innovative new relaxation and wellness therapies in one of the country’s most comprehensively outfitted facilities. Kennedy admits he took some inspiration from Thoreau’s Walden Pond in the design vision for Allenberry. As a result, the development is committed to including every aspect of resort and residential living that can support a community connecting people to wellness, nature and one another. Those seeking rest, restoration, and recuperation from the pressures of urban living should take note – this community may just be what you are seeking. Allenberry welcomes guests for short and extended stay lodging, weddings and corporate events. Winter Weekends in Wisconsin Playing in the Wisconsin snow is an enchanting experience, and we’ve got some of the most sparkling, beautiful destinations for you to get your winter fix along with your friends and family. Get out there and enjoy these only-in-Wisconsin places. 1. Snow tubing at Cascade A great activity for the whole family, Cascade Mountain in Portage offers up a 900-foot chute to glide down on a tube. Fear not; there’s no need to walk back up the hill. Hop on the “magic carpet” ride back to the top, with tube in tow. 2. Merrill Sled Dog Race See something impressive and adorable at the same time in Merrill, home of the annual Winterfest Sled Dog Race. There’s skijoring (skiers pulled by dogs), kiddie and celebrity races too. Grab a spot on the sidelines where you and the little ones can marvel at 100 mushers and their dog teams rushing by. 3. Snowshoe Nine Mile Slip on snowshoes and hit the trails at Nine Mile Forest in Wausau for a heavily wooded blend of snowy, scenic views. A 4-mile trail is also available if you’re looking for a shorter trek. Snowshoeing side-by-side with friends is our recipe for great winter memories.

4. Ice Fish Lake Winnebago The largest inland lake in Wisconsin is home to a variety of species like walleye, perch, white bass and sturgeon, making it a prime spot for ice fishing. The lake sturgeon population here is rated as one of the finest in the country. Celebrate the big fish with a visit to the Sturgeon Spectacular, Fond du lac’s 3-day winter festival in February. 5. Ice Skating at The Edgewater Right in the heart of Madison, The Edgewater hotel is a prime ice skating spot along the shores of Lake Mendota. This 4000-squarefoot ice rink also sits in the shadow of the State Capitol, so the views you have while skating hand-in-hand are extraordinary. 6. Board a Snow Train Wisconsin is home to various snow trains, all with their unique and exemplary twists. The East Troy Railroad Museum, for example, hosts holiday train rides in December. Purchase tickets in advance for your family, then enjoy getting into the holiday spirit

while riding through a Wisconsin winter wonderland. 7. Be Mystified by the Ice Caves Explore an ice cave this winter — fingers crossed. If conditions permit them to be accessible by foot, a truly mystifying experience, and that’s why we love visiting the Apostle Island National Lakeshore even in the heart of winter. The cold won’t take your breath away if you’re bundled up, but Mother Nature’s artistry will. Be sure to keep an eye on the ever-changing winter conditions of the caves, and fingers crossed for a freeze over this year!
