Summer time is Festival time. Get ready for the craft shows, artwork, carnival rides, food, games, live entertainment and concerts galore.

Up Close: From the Editor

I learned something new this month which proves “you can, too, teach an old dog ...” Well, anyway; after covering summer festivals for the past 20 years, there were many annual events I looked forward to attending. Renewing friends and old acquaintences were always a treat, along with the snowKathy Barnett / cones, cotton candy and elephant ears. Senior Editor But my research for this particular issue led me down new pathways to events I had never heard about before. I soon learned there is a festival to celebrate in every single state! Most have more than one, two, or just a few. So now my bucket list includes visiting all these new places we’ve just previewed for you and we invite you to come along to enjoy and make new memories to cherish for a lifetime. Memories? Speaking of memories, my very first memory of attending a festival was when I was four years old. We drove to St. Louis for a Strawberry Festival to benefit a children’s home. A young lady who worked at the home and temporarily resided with my grandparents was to return home with us for the summer. When we arrived at her office, I was loaded down with presents. She had made me a cute little sundress with a matching bonnet and gave me a beautiful topsy turvy doll. One side was an African American, the other was Caucasian with a reversable skirt. Of course, mother had to have pictures. After changing into my new outfit, we ventured outside to find just the right spot. While seaching a hobo clown with a sad face walked up and offered me one of his giant helium balloons. “Perfect, my mother said. “Would you be willing to pose for a picture?” she asked the clown. He nodded, not cracking a smile. Mother motioned for me to stand beside him and I obeyed. Looking up at this big guy with giant feet, I got a closer look at his big red nose. Then the unthinkable happened! This perfect stranger bent down and swooped me up in his arms for the picture. I squeezed my eyes shut and held my breath, willing him to put me safely back on the ground. As young as I was, I had already been taught not to speak to strangers. And this clown was definately a stranger! Boy, was I ever glad when that was over. I think it took eating at least three strawberry shortcakes before I got over it... Until next month...Got any festival memories? Please share with us for a chance to win a weekend getaway! JUNE, 2019 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -5-

Column Feature-Things to Do:

Food Fun

I learned a new word yesterday: Maycember. Now, this is just hearsay, but I’ve been told it is the same thing as December – without the lights. In other words, busy with a Capital Biz! This is truly a concept I understand. There is a lot going on this time of year. In addition to Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, May is traditionally the month for graduations from nursery school to preschool to kindergarten to middle school to junior high school to high school to associate degrees to bachelor’s degrees to master’s to doctorates, to . . . whew! That’s enough! Wait. What happened? Can it be? How did I miss it? May is over. In all honesty, as wonderful as May is, I’m sure glad we made it through all the activities and have now moved into June. School is out and all too soon that familiar phrase, “There’s nothing to do!” will be heard across the nation. Oh, there are some upcoming holidays, and for the record, they are the fun ones! Who doesn’t love fireworks? But alas, they are short-lived. So what’s next? How about going to a festival? Which one? If you search long enough, you can find a festival celebrating most anything. But I propose a new one: Man Cave Mile. This one would be dedicated specifically to fathers. In addition to the obligatory booths showcasing the latest in sports equipment, vehicles,

By Kandy Derden, Places to Go Editor

tools, gardening and house repair, there could also be information about education, health and other assorted interests. Let’s dig deeper. Spiritual guidance, parental mentoring and all the things a father needs should be included. There could be a plethora of activities geared toward father WITH their children. Some would be teaching moments and others just time spent together for the sake of spending time together. What about a section for when KP duty falls on dad’s shoulders? Here’s an idea for a very easy no-bake summer dessert sure to please - and impress! LEMONADE PIE 1 box graham crackers, crushed 2 sticks margarine I/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, softened 1/2 tub Cool Whip 1 can (12 oz) frozen lemonade,

thawed Melt margarine and mix with graham cracker crumbs. Press into pan or pans. Makes two 9” pies or a 9X13” pan. Mix remaining ingredients together and spread in prepared graham cracker crusts. Top with remaining Cool Whip. Freeze. Options: substitute lemonade with pink lemonade, orange juice or limeade mixed with a 15 oz. tub of frozen strawberries with sugar, thawed. Garnish as desired with fresh berries and twist of lime. It is quite delicious and refreshing on a hot summer day. During the winter months it is easy to stay in, curl up with a good book or watch a movie and ignore the world. Likewise, in the summer I can be content staying home in the air conditioning. I’ll admit it: I rather enjoy my ‘me time’ but this needs to be done in moderation to avoid becoming a hermit. The same is true of fathers. Yes, they get overwhelmed with all their responsibilities and occasionally need a break. I know it is sometimes necessary to be away, but other times all you need to do is show up! Make memories. Be the man you want your children to become. They can’t do it without an example to follow. On second thought, perhaps we should rename the man cave. I know – here’s an idea: let’s call it the family room. Open 24/7 - even in Maycember. JUNE, 2019 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -9-

Southern Food Festiva

By Kathleen Walls Guest Editor www.AmericanRoads.net

Slugburger Festival Corinth, Mississippi

begun with Nolan Jacobs back in 1950. Jared Zeringue, a local whose family was longtime fans of the smokehouse, bought it about four years ago. Jared has had his own restaurants and so he added some of his “River Road” style dishes to the original smokehouse ones. The smokehouse makes its products the old fashioned way. They chop fresh meat for sausage. The smokehouses out back have been doing their job for many years. The wood comes from his dad’s farm.

Ocala Culinary Festival Ocala, Florida

It’s held each year on the second weekend in July in downtown Corinth. A slugburger is a similar to a hamburger but some breading or soybean mixture is added to extend the meat. It is always deep fried not grilled. Usually it is seved with pickles, onions and mustard. The reason it is called a “slugburger” is not for the little garden pest but because during the depression when it was created, it sold for a nickel which was then called a slug. I tried one at Barrome’s Drugstore when I was in Corinth and it was tasty. Borroum’s opened in 1865 when Dr. Barrome came to Corinth and decided to open a pharmacy there. He had served as a assistant surgeon for the Confederacy. It’s the oldest drugstore in Mississippi.

Andouille Festival Laplace, Louisiana

The Andouille Festival is held at the St. John Civic Center in Laplace annually in mid-October. Wayne Jacobs Smokehouse is a regular entry in the food category. I sampled their Boudin Balls, Andoulle Chips and Tasso so I’m betting on their taking first place. If you go to the festival, take time out to visit Wayne Jacobs Smokehouse. It has a long history -12- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ JUNE, 2019

This is a relatively new festival; 2019 was only its third year. It’s held the first week in April. It is a bit different as events are at various locations throughout Marion County. Each event requires a separate ticket. It culminates with the Grand Tasting held at Downtown Ocala’s Citizens’ Circle where attendees spend the afternoon enjoying open-air festivities with like-minded foodies, chefs, winemakers, mixologists and culinary vendors with live music in the background. Because wine, beer and spirits are served, no one under 21 is allowed. All proceeds go to Ocala Culinary Festival Charities, a nonprofit for culinary education and fighting hunger in Marion County. I hope to see Eaton’s Beach take part next year. They serve a trademarked Florisiana Cuisine. My favorites are the Shrimp Creole and, for an appetizer, the Fried Green Tomatoes.

als You Won’t Want to Miss! Port Salerno Seafood Festival Martin County, Florida

The Port Salerno Seafood Festival is held in January each year. It’s a tiny town but most of its residents are fishermen or seafood processors. We visited the pier there and it’s filled with shops, dining, art galleries and many different galleries and crafters. The town began as a stop on Flagler’s railroad in 1894. By the1930s, it began its fishing tradition. Earlier there are legends of bandits and pirates. The Port Salerno Ghost Tour tells many of the early town legends.

Homosassa Arts, Crafts, & Seafood Festival, Homosassa, FL

It’s a two day event in early November. This will be its 45th year. Along with the delicious seafood, there is a juried art show, crafts, and live entertainment.

I don’t know which restaurants will be represented this year but here are a few of my favorite picks; Seafood Seller’s, Seagrass Waterfront, and Margaritaville Café. Seafood Seller’s and Margaritaville Cafe are located on the waterfront and offer music to go along with the luscious seafood. Seafood Sellers is located in a small mall but outside appearances are deceptive. Inside the food has a combined Louisiana/Florida flavor and the décor takes you to your

favorite Cajun haunt in Louisiana. My choice there is the soft shell crab.

A Taste of Glynn St. Simons, Georgia

Each April for the past 19 years, The King and Prince Resort bring together local residents and visitors for the annual A Taste of Glynn. The event showcases some of the county’s best chefs from local restaurants to celebrate Glynn County’s best food. ECHO, the King and Prince’s own restaurant, always takes part. I was just there and can vouch for fabulous food from them. Hard to choose a favorite dish here but I’ll go with the very spicy Shrimp and Grits. I have no idea who is going to participate this year but here are a few of my favorite St Simons choices. Gnat’s Landing is famous for its ‘Slaw Bowl.’ This is a very Jimmy Buffet style island place, pop tops and flipflops. I loved their fried shrimp basket. Georgia Sea Grill is perfect for your more upscale dining experience. I had Baked Lump Crab Cakes with a cup of their She Crab Soup. Fantastic! A sure bet to win in the BBQ field is Southern Soul BBQ. Southern Living Magazine named it “The South’s Best BBQ” in 2018. An unusual option is Golden Isles Olive Oil where owner Donna MacPherson serves just about everything with a tasty dosing of exquisite olive oil. Whoever takes part next year, there are sure to be some luscious choices. There is also music from a local band and a silent auction. It’s a bit pricey, $45 this year, but the money goes to a great cause. It supports the Glynn Community Crisis Center which helps the victims of domestic violence. PurpleHull Pea Fest EMERSON - PurpleHull Peas - a great reason for a festival if there ever was one - are close cousins to the more familiar, but less tasty, blackeyed peas. They are members of the “cow pea” or “southern pea” family, just as are black-eyed peas and crowder peas. Every year, on the last Saturday in June, Emerson, Arkansas pays homage to this wonderful tasty legume with its itinerant and historic past. There’s lots to see at the PurpleHull Pea Festival but undoubtedly the highlight is the World Championship Rotary Tiller Race. Take part in the pea shelling competition, and the Great PurpleHull Peas and Cornbread Cookoff. There will be a parade, an antique tractor show, food booths, arts and craft displays. Georgia Peach Festival

T

he Georgia Peach Festival honors peach growers for their contribution to our state’s economy and to the food industry nationwide. This year’s event will take place June 7-8 in Fort Valley and June 15 in Byron. The annual week-long Festival attracts as many as 10,000 visitors including church groups, senior groups and charter bus tours. The Georgia Peach Festival splits events between Peach County’s two cities, Byron and Fort Valley, each June. They will include a variety of Amazing Arts & Crafts Vendors, a Fun Kids Zone, Delicious Food Trucks & Vendors, Outstanding Live Music, a Spectacular Fireworks Show for all ages. On Friday night, wear comfortable neon or white clothing and shoes and join in the fun at the Family Foam Party. Dance to the music with your entire family while enjoying foam. Remember bring your smiles, friends and good vibes. On Saturday evening beginning at 6 p.m., a free concert will feature the legendary group, “The Tams and 14-K Gold Band” with sounds of Carolina Beach Music and fantastic dance moves. A fireworks show will follow the dance. Georgia peaches have a long and storied tradition and Peach County is the epicenter of this fabled industry. The first peaches were planted in the state in the 18th century, and the first commercial production occurred in the mid-19th century.

Georgia ranks third in the nation in the annual production of peaches, with more than 15,000 acres of peach trees yielding more than 1.7 million bushels of peaches annually. More than half of that harvest is cultivated in Peach County alone. Georgia peaches are arguably the sweetest and tastiest grown anywhere in the world. While most Peach County residents lie asleep in their beds on the final Saturday morning of the Peach Festival, Rich Bennett and his team of volunteer bakers will be wide awake and working on Peach County’s renowned culinary masterpiece: The “World’s Largest Peach Cobbler.” And by 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, a substantial crowd will have already begun to line up for a taste, an annual event many consider to be the most anticipated highlight of the Georgia Peach Festival. The colossal cobbler -- 11 by 5 feet and about eight inches deep -- is made from an extraordinary 90 pounds of butter, 150 pounds of sugar, 150 pounds of flour, 32 gallons of milk and, of course, 75 gallons of peaches courtesy of Lane Packing Co. The cobbler’s other ingredients are purchased by sponsors. For more information, visit www.gapeachfestival.com or call 478-825-4002.

Randall Hedden VINCENNES - Acclaimed artist Randall Hedden will present a live painting performance, accompanied by music, on June 14, 7:30 p.m., at the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center. His show is titled, “Paint America Funny Again.” The performance celebrates the accomplishments and influences of celebrities and notables, such as Red Skelton, with live performance art. During the performance, paintings will come to life on canvas depicting the celebrity’s passion, personality and influence while being synchronized to customized medleys. Thematic elements, historical content and audience participation will heighten the sensory experience while sharing the joy and emotion of the most important artists, stars and heroes in history. Following the show, the audience is encouraged to have their photo taken with the art. To date, Randall’s art has raised over 1.75 million dollars for charities all over the United States. Hedden grew up in Evansville, studied art at Vincennes University, and his murals have been featured on Vincennes buildings. He currently lives in Tempe, Arizona. Tickets are $20 and may be reserved by calling 812888-4184 or online at www. RedSkeltonMuseum.org In other news, a world’s record will be set in Vincennes, thanks to an invitation for a large crowd to recite the Pledge of Allegiance on June 16 at 2 p.m. at the Red Skelt-

on Museum of American Comedy, The record-setting event is part of the Skelton Museum’s 50th anniversary celebration of Red Skelton’s 1969 national television broadcast, when Red explained the meaning of each part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Red said he learned it’s meaning from his elementary school teacher in Vincennes, his hometown. Red’s explanation of the Pledge of Allegiance touched Americans and CBS-TV received many request for copies of it soon after the broadcast. Skelton was asked to perform the Pledge at many of his concerts and patriotic events from 1969 through the nation’s 1976 bicentennial. “Given Red’s Long-standing defense of it, what better place could there be to set the record for reciting the Pledge of Allegiance than the museum and performing arts center that bear his name,” Pratt said. During the program, a video of Red Skelton’s Pledge will

be shown and then the public will stand and say the Pledge. Because this is a record-setting event, each person will be required to register so there will be an accurate count for the official record. Participants will receive a commemorative sticker that will provide them access to the Skelton Museum the day of the program. “This is a chance to be part of history, help set a world’s record, and demonstrate the same love of country that Red Skelton showed throughout his long career in radio, television and the movies. Vincennes is so proud to be his hometown and this is one way we can honor him,” Pratt said. Born in Vincennes on July 18, 1913, Skelton was a prolific entertainer whose career spanned Vaudeville, radio, movies and television. The Red Skelton Show was a top-rated television program from 1951 to 1971, earning Red three Emmy awards and the 1986 Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Governor’s Award, for lifetime achievement. The Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy will open their first exhibit designed especially for children on June 10, 2019. The exhibit features seven interactive stations for kids including: flag folding, building American symbols with legos, listening to patriotic songs, and a scavenger hunt with pictures of Flags around Vincennes. The exhibit will be open during regular museum hours for no additional charge and will be open through mid-September. JUNE, 2019 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -31-

Balloon Festival

BALLSTON SPA - The 6th Annual Saratoga Balloon and BBQ Festival is back once again at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds in Ballston Spa, NY, June 21-23, 2019. Due to the success of the BBQ last year, two new BBQ vendors have been added. There will be bountiful balloons, 30 of them at each launch. Last year, after four successful years, the event organizers realized that they wanted to create a bigger and better event, one that was less dependant on the weather. So the barbecue component was added as a protection against the weather. Festival organizer Tim Cianciola says, “The BBQ vendors and music alone are worth the price of admission.” He points out, “With all the great entertainment, our audience can have an enjoyable day. And let’s not dismiss the balloons; they are a spectacular sight. They ascend as a parade of skyward seeking colorful flying ships, actually, an amazing happening.” This year’s Festival schedule is filled with, kids activities, bountiful BBQ, craft beer, wine slushies, bands, street performers, a trained dog show, a marketplace with 100 booths including arts, crafts, specialty foods, pony rides, games, and the balloons. During the three days the Festival expects to launch up to 100 balloons. Perhaps, the most exciting single event is the Friday evening Balloon Glow at dusk. Cianciola says, “It’s magic, just pure magic.” The show opens Friday at 3PM and closes after the Balloon Glow at dusk. Saturday runs from 11 until 8PM. Sunday hours are 11-5. Admission: Adult admission is $12 at the gate, kids $5. Discounted Advance sales tickets are available on the the Festival website ?www.balloonandbbq.com?. Country Thunder Wisconsin

TWIN LAKES - Festival organizers have added several main stage acts who will join yet another stellar line-up for the Mid-West’s favorite country music festival. “Country Thunder Wisconsin has established itself as a mustsee event every summer in beautiful Twin Lakes,” says Country Thunder Music Festivals CEO, Troy Vollhoffer “The fans in this part of the world make the Country Thunder experience special, and we are truly excited to announce these headliners for them. Ticket sales have been brisk since Chris Stapleton was announced at last year’s event. By adding Tim McGraw, Jake Owen and Luk Combs 2019 is going to be a blockbuster year. Stapleton has never played Country Thunder Wisconsin, but he is no stranger to fans of country, rock and roots music. The announcement of the five-time Grammy Award, and astonishing 14-time ACMA and CMA

winner, created a frenzy when he was announced during last year’s festival. The Lexington, Kentucky native is truly a once-in-a-lifetime artist who transcends musical boundaries and genres – Sunday evening will be a closing night like no other. There have been very few American country artists more consistent than McGraw over the past 25 years, and CT Nation will be thrown for a loop when one of the genre’s most consummate performers takes the stage. Recent hit singles, “Neon Church” and “Thought About You” are currently showcasing the country music legend at the peak of his considerable powers. Longtime Country Thunder Wisconsin favorite Jake Owen returns to Twin Lakes on a hot streak which has included a whopping five hit singles from his No. 1 album, American Love.
