Up Close: From the Editor

I feel like a bird that has been let out of its cage! As various locations throughout the United States reopen from the Covid-19 shutdown, my suitcase beckons. But where should I go first? I thought I had seen it all, done it all and experienced everything I need to experience before the pandemic. However, after being shut in for more than two months, I’ve watched my fill of television reruns for awhile. Oh, I enjoyed several new movies I would have never taken the time to watch had we not been tied to our living room seats. And I must say the numerous virtual videos have helped take the sting out of not being able to travel for awhile. I, for one, am ready to get back into the traveling mode, even if it is just a few hours from home. Just this week, my best friend and I took her granddaughter to visit other family members; so while out, we had the pleasure of dining in a restaurant The trend seems to be one-tank trips, area camping, and domestic destinations and I’m ok with that. Since we cover places to go, things to do and people to see across the United States for the fun side of life, those subjects do fit in. So while many fairs, festivals and other large group events have taken a back seat and a year off, do not dispair. There are plenty of other opportunities out there. And while our June issue has been our annual fair/ festival preview for the past 10 years, we have many other suggestions for a summer of fun. So let the fun begin! Start here and take a look at all the destinations that are eagerly welcoming guests back. Let’s Go!

Cooking With a Purpose don’t forget about the recipes . . . lots and lots of recipes. My selection for this month was chosen because this issue is dedicated to celebrating the reopening of our economy. And what is synonymous with celebrating? Champagne! I know what you’re thinking. I don’t drink either. But don’t let the name confuse you. This is a family friendly concoction suitable for all types of celebrations from receiving a good report card to the local ice cream shop reopening.

Growing up, we only had one pair of scissors in the house. These were known as the ‘good’ scissors, AKA sewing scissors. They were not to be used for cutting paper because that would make them too dull to cut fabric. Eventually, we needed a new pair because it was a requirement for Home Economics class. Alas, they were so much sharper, the old ones got a new name: the paper scissors. My grandmother was a collector. Among other things, she gathered antique dolls, dishes, glass paperweights, picture frames, thimbles and apparently, scissors. The dolls, dishes, paperweights and pictures were on display. But I didn’t know about the thimbles and scissors until she was gone and we were sorting through her belongings. Somehow, I ended up with a shoebox full of her various cutting tools. I am now the proud owner of three pairs of pinking shears (two zig zag and one -8- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2020

scalloped) and one pair of thinning shears (which I am afraid to use on anyone’s hair). Over the years she accumulated several dozen assorted size scissors with black, orange, blue, silver, gold, red, pewter, rubber and yarn-wrapped handles. I now have at least one and sometimes two pairs of scissors (including the original pair) in every drawer in the house, my purse, the sewing box, two craft tote bags plus the still halffull shoebox of extras in my closet. My car? Not yet, but give me time to select just the right ones. You see, I noticed these details because like most of you, I’ve been home for two solid months now. During this time, I’ve been sorting. In addition to scissors, my pursuits have led me to beads, yarn, ribbons, shoes and clothes. There was also an abundance of blank greeting cards, forgotten Christmas gifts, a stash of emergency birthday and shower presents for last minute invitations. And

PINK CHAMPAGNE SALAD 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened ¾ c. sugar 1 large can crushed pineapple, drained 1 large tub (approx. 20 oz.) frozen strawberries, thawed and drained 2 or 3 large bananas sliced 1 (8 oz.) tub Cool Whip, thawed Mix together and freeze in a 7 X 11” casserole dish. As always, this recipe is easily adapted to your taste by adding nuts, marshmallows or chocolate chips. Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream, fresh strawberries, pecan halves, chocolate drizzle, a lime twist or mint leaves. Go ahead. Dress it up. Make it special. In fact, this is so good, it might seem more like a dessert than a salad, especially if you serve it on the fancy plates. So get busy planning your family celebration. Make memories now before everyone scatters and life resumes a normal pace. On that note, I had better get busy cleaning out that one last cabinet. With any luck, I just might find the perfect pair of scissors suitable for my car’s first excursion out of the garage.

People to See: In March 1979, Al Levy was a shaggy-haired, bearded student attending Evergreen College, when he and a fellow student decided to play their guitars and banjo aboard the Washington State Ferry MV Kaleetan on their way to Port Townsend, Washington. Thus, began an amazing magical era in the Pacific Northwest which became known all around the world for the Ferryboat Musicians. Now just over 41 years later, Allen Levy, a practicing therapist in Anchorage and presently chair of the Psychology Licensing Board for Alaska, has published a new book, Blue Water Bluegrass: The Ferryboat Musicians. He and his son, Adam, recently set up their instruments in the front yard of his home in Anchorage and got to relive the bygones of an era from years ago. They played two 45-minute sets to an audience of about 30 people in the neighborhood. They performed an array of top ten Ferryboat music favorites - songs including I-5 South and Ain’t Gonna Cry by Steve Guthe, Slipped Disc by Benny Goodman, Me and My Uncle by The Grateful Dead, Jambalaya by Hank Williams, several fiddle tunes and songs written by Al. Al Levy grew up in Anchorage. He and his musical partners

made money while students at Evergreen State College. “For years I struggled until I realized that making a life with music is richer than making a living with music,” he said. “People had a fascination with the experience we created playing and sharing our music on the ferry boats. It made the journey profound and enjoyable - being connected, rather than alone and isolated.” Blue Water Bluegrass: The Ferryboat Musicians took him eight years to write. He wrote over 500 pages and his editor had him cut the book in two. “I respect and value tradition. But I also love making hamburger out of sacred cows,” he said. “Creativity doesn’t come from me. It comes to me and flows through me. I let go of my ego and let the story tell itself. “Music has three elements: melody, harmony, and rhythm. Ferryboat Music is public, connected, and interactive. munication. There was a dynamic give and take of energy between us— and there was joy in getting people to not just listen, but to actively participate in the music. Al offers up his lessons learned from his life as a Ferryboat Musician: 1. Turn Your Fears into Action Plans -- When your fear sounds the alarm, face it coolly, calm down, take a few breaths, and turn your brain on. Challenge yourself to identify the steps needed to overcome the challenges you face. 2. Make Love Your Antidote to Fear. Use your love to make you stand up and face forward, even when your fear screams “run.” 3. Make Your Own Music. Music gives you an opportunity to connect with yourself and with other people. Music from digital sources is okay, but don’t let it be the only music in your life. Enjoy live music every chance you get. 4, Make the Most of Your Connections. The world is your mandala—a representation of the universe organized around you as the central point. 5. Choose to Do What You Love to Do. Recognize that things are as they are, and you are a part of them. Happiness starts as a state of mind – a mood—a passing feeling that comes and goes.

EUREKA SPRINGS - Eureka Springs’ two landmark historic hotels, the 1886 Crescent and the 1905 Basin Park, will be reopening to full service on Monday, June 15. This comes on the heels of several successful “weekend only” careful openings at both properties. Both properties will continue to strictly adhere to health safe protocols as set down by Governor Hutchinson and the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) during this reopening phase. “This includes all of our services at both the Crescent and the Basin Park to our guests, patrons and friends,” says Jack Moyer, general manager and executive vice-president for both properties. At the Crescent Hotel will be nightly lodging, SkyBar Gourmet Pizza and scenic overlook dining, New Moon Spa & Salon, a full slate of daily resort activities, and the ever-popular Crescent Hotel Ghost Tours. The planning for weddings at the Crescent’s numerous venues has also been opened for gatherings up to 50 total attendees. Downtown Eureka Springs’ centerpiece, the Basin Park Hotel, will be offering guests an even more enjoyable experiential visit than in years past. This follows the recent redevelopment of this seven-story epicenter in the heart

of the town’s entertainment district. Two-bedroom suites have been added with an expanded common area and the inclusion of a soaking tub and walk-in shower. Spa1905 has added comfortable and sharply designed spa suites for guests who want to immerse themselves into the spa experience. Guests wil enjoy added service and amenities, exclusive hot tub access and are just footsteps away from the plethora of services and treatments that Spa1905 offers. Located just outside the spa on the same floor is the magnificent new outdoor gathering space, set aside a limestone bluff. This space includes an outdoor hot tub, fire pit and patio furnishings with only the sky overhead. A resort host can guide guests to everything fun and exciting to see and do in Eureka Springs plus introducing hotel guests to the well-developed list of daily programming, A totally new addition to Eureka Springs’ downtown scene is

Jack Rabbett’s Whisky Bar offering the casual atmosphere of a living room featuring plush, comfortable seating, a fireplace, pool tables, and walls of big screen televisions. This downtown getaway is located just down the hallway from the highly popular Balcony Restaurant & Bar, also being fully reintroduced, with its alfresco seating that overlooks downtown on one side and Basin Spring Park on the other. The paranormal aspect of the Basin Park Hotel has not been overlooked. Soon, a totally new experience, now in development, will be offered to both hotel guests and visitors to Eureka Springs. Patrons will be treated to hearing tales of happenings that occurred inside the limestone and pink dolomite walls of this historic structure and they will be able to partake in a unique investigation from the hotel’s roof to the depths of its hidden cave. Wine Country in W

With open spaces and a vast selection of indoor and outdoor venues, the wine country gem of California’s Central Coast offers an unforgettable experience for group events in a changing world

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY — The Santa Ynez Valley has long woven an uncommon balance of work and play into its everyday life. For this reason, the wine country gem of California’s Central Coast has long been a welcome alternative to merely ordinary destinations for family reunions and corporate retreats. As planners begin to organize their group events, the wide-open and uncrowded spaces of the Santa Ynez Valley seem uniquely fit for these changing times. The region’s laidback culture, natural landscape, and outdoor activities, not to mention worldclass wines, thriving culinary scene, and year-round mild weather, have long combined to foster unforgettable gatherings. And the region’s variety of venues, ranging from small wineries to large outdoor event spaces, and from traditional indoor facilities to picturesque vineyard settings, are particularly appealing in today’s times. “With meeting planners being asked to reimagine their approach to traditional formats, venues, and experiences for group events, the Santa Ynez Valley provides them with the setting, options, and space they need to ensure their events are unique, productive, and safe,” said Shelby Sim, CEO of Visit the Santa Ynez Valley. “Many of the same qualities that make the Santa Ynez Valley such a beloved wine country destination—rolling hills and vineyards, a thriving culinary scene, and open space as far as the eye can see, to name a few—are the same qualities that make it ideal for a meeting, conference, or corporate retreat.” MEET: With an ever-expanding roster of venues, the Santa Ynez Valley is home to conference spaces, hotels, resorts, and inns of all shapes and sizes. Resorts such as the timeless Alisal Guest Ranch & Re-18- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2020

sort, the recently renovated Flying Flags RV Resort, and the flexible and expansive options at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott, Hotel Corque, and Chumash Casino, can fully accommodate most any meeting or corporate retreat. While other, smaller properties like Skyview Los Alamos, Fess Parker Wine Country Inn, The Landsby, Santa Ynez Inn, The Ballard Inn, and the newly renovated Vinland Hotel & Lounge are ideal for more intimate gatherings. WINE: Home to more than 100 wineries, many of which have their own unique outdoor spaces, the Santa Ynez Valley can also offer a wine country event not possible in most destinations. From the vineyard settings of Brave & Maiden and Roblar Winery, to the views from Sanford Winery and Presqu’ile Winery, to the myriad options and unique architecture of Sunstone Winery and Brick Barn Wine Estate — just

Wide Open Santa Ynez Valley menus and private dining spaces, including Brothers at the Red Barn, Industrial Eats, and more. “What sets the Santa Ynez Valley apart as an event destination is just how vast the region is and how unique the choices are, with an ability to accommodate anything from intimate winery retreats and incentive travel, to larger events in more traditional venues,” Sim said. “With so many spaces that are so close to Los Angeles and the Bay Area yet feel far removed from urban life, planners are able to design an event that perfectly suits their needs at a time when safety, flexibility, and peace of mind are particularly important.” For more information, or to research events and attractions, book lodging and activities, and create a custom travel itinerary, visit visitsyv.com.

to name a few — the region offers a seemingly endless variety of winery options. EAT: The Santa Ynez Valley’s strong agricultural roots have helped foster the region’s world-renowned wine and its creative culinary scene, and evolve together. In the Santa Ynez Valley, farm-to-table is no empty cliche. The food served in most of the region’s best restaurants is sourced within 30 miles of where it is consumed, and the cuisine is diverse, including imaginative wine country fare, Italian, Santa Maria-style barbeque, traditional Danish dishes, as well as French, Asian fusion, and more. Chicago Wel

CHICAGO – Tourism & Hospitality Forward, is a new initiative to accelerate and spur Chicago’s tourism industry post-coronavirus and help expedite the City’s economic recovery. To date, a coalition of more than 250 local tourism, hospitality, meeting and event-related organizations and businesses have signed on to the pledge promising alignment, collaboration and socially responsible tourism and hospitality that will instill confidence in residents and visitors as they return to Chicago. “This current crisis has been simply devastating to so many, including the tourism and hospitality industry, and we recognize that these unprecedented challenges require unprec-24- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2020

edented and swift actions in order to restore this economic driver for the City,” said Glenn Eden, Chair of the Choose Chicago Board of Directors. “Our first priority is to promote socially responsible tourism. We will demonstrate to our guests that through the operational changes and precautions taken, it is safe to enjoy Chicago again.” As the City transitions through a phased reopening, this alliance of industry partners will work together to establish best practices and safety measures for the health and safety of residents and visitors alike when cultural institutions, hotels, attractions and restaurants return to regular business and welcome guests.

lcoming Visitors “I applaud Choose Chicago’s commitment to developing safe, collaborative solutions to the profound impact COVID-19 has had on our city’s vital tourism and hospitality industry,” said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “Despite the challenges we face, the strength of our recovery is being built on forward-looking partnerships like these which are mutually supportive and rooted in the data of this disease, allowing us to build and grow more resilient, inclusive, and powerful than we’ve ever been.” There are four components to the pledge: • SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE PLANNING: We will put the safety of our patrons and employees first by adhering to public health guidance and direction and become leaders in socially responsible tourism and hospitality. • DEDICATED AND STRATEGIC ENGAGEMENT: We will recognize the importance of taking a strategic and collaborative approach by dedicating the time to align across sectors and develop the phased plans we need to thrive in this challenging environment. • AUTHENTIC AND INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE: We will work together to spur the traffic of Chicago visitors and guests by enhancing our efforts to create unique ways to leverage all of the city’s dynamic neighborhoods and authentic assets. • UNPARALLELED CHICAGO ADVOCACY: We advocate for all that Chicago has to offer by cross-promoting offerings and collaborating on shared offers to create a mutually beneficial environment for the industry and ultimately a stronger economy for the city. Additionally, Tourism & Hospitality Forward announced an outreach and engagement framework that participants can leverage to bring visitors back to Chicago when the time is right. The

framework includes: • Promoting Chicago’s reopening in a calibrated manner with programs and promotions, such as staycations, designed to engage local audiences. • Launching seasonal initiatives to bring leisure travelers to Chicago with an emphasis on neighboring states. • Reinforcing that Chicago will continue to be the best place to do business as the City competes for meetings and events. • Maximizing all Chicago has to offer through a unifying marketing campaign. Planning has been underway with several working groups aligned by sector, including accommodations, museums and attractions, arts & culture, festivals, and special events including sports and a dedicated focus on unique and diverse neighborhoods. “These groups initially began meeting to focus on initial and almost immediate reopening strategies,” said Eden. “They have now evolved and have been rolled up to collaborate with and support Mayor Lightfoot’s longer-term Reopening and Recovery Task Force, including marketing and economic development for the City as a whole.” “The traditional visitor and convention delegate will remain our ultimate goal in the recovery process,” said David Whitaker, President & CEO of Choose Chicago. “In the early phases of reopening we are going to have to focus and rely on our local residents, nearby suburban and regional visitors and the drive market as a whole. While they will be the first to easily return to their favorite spots and activities, they can also be ambassadors as we welcome guests and visitors back to Chicago.” June, 2020 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -25-

Cooperstown / Continued... animals ... on the most fun and fabulous carousel I know. The Empire State Carousel pays homage to animals that are indigenous to New York state. Where else will you get the opportunity to ride a beaver, raccoon, frog, Erie Canal mule, skunk, pig or even a scallop? The carousel is actually a little lesson in “I Love New York,” covering important moments in the state’s history, highlighting famous New Yorkers (yep ... there’s Alexander Hamilton again), celebrating its state symbols, and paying tribute to the work of James Fenimore Cooper. The carousel won’t likely open this year, but I want you to put it on your “to-do” list for a future visit! Riding a beaver or a frog can take a lot out of you, so let’s talk about a great place in town to get a drink. It’s been a few weeks since we’ve shared a beverage recipe, so we’re probably overdue. This one comes from the majestic Otesaga Resort Hotel, which sits on the banks of Otsego Lake. In the summertime, the lake simply sparkles in the sun. When Cooper wrote about the lake he called “Glimmerglass” in his book The Deerslayer, he was inspired by this body of water from his hometown. Mix up a glass of this spiked lemonade and I’ll tell you about The Otesaga.

If we were in Cooperstown right now, sipping our Glimmerglass Lemonades, we’d most definitely be sitting on the veranda of The Otesaga in their very cozy rocking chairs, a serene setting for whiling away some time admiring the lake. We’d probably be talking about the stunning views from our rooms. Or perhaps we’d be recounting the excellent round of golf we had played on the resort’s Leatherstocking Golf Course (one of

the best courses in the state ... and named for – you guessed it – something James Fenimore Cooper wrote). Or maybe our conversation would turn to the delicious dinner we had last night at Hawkeye Grill (yes, named for the character in The Last of the Mohicans ... are you detecting a trend?). Places to Go:

Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island is one of the original relaxing beach resort areas in the United States. It was a time when estate owners escaped the business of plantation life and brought the family to the beach. There were the soothing sounds of the ocean, the anticipation of searching for that special sea shell and the satisfaction of enjoying the day’s catch for dinner. All these were part of Pawleys family traditions passed down and memories cherished. Today, families continue to enjoy vacationing on Pawleys Island, spending time together and making memories. Just as many of the classic beach homes on the island have been shared among and passed down through generations, visitors share family time here, too. Its convenient location on the South Carolina coast make this a natural gathering place. Here, you can spend time together without distractions. Once on Pawleys, there are no flashing lights or ringing cash registers. No lines or reservations. It’s laid-back, kick-offyour-shoes time. The beach and marshlands set the stage. They provide common ground, with something every generation can enjoy. Some relish lounging in locally-made rope hammocks or ambling along the beach while

others choose to explore the marshlands or take a dip in the ocean. At the end of the day, gather on the porch or around the dinner table where stories are shared, plans are made and bonds are formed. The beach houses and historic inns on Pawleys offer a feeling of home and a nod to island tradition. Known as “arrogantly shabby,” they have the character and comfort you’d expect here. The Sea View Inn, with its 20 private guest rooms, and the eight-bedroom Pelican Inn are traditionally open through Labor Day. They are flanked by beach houses, large and small, available all year. The unmatched natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere of Pawleys Island are the perfect spot for unforgettable family time. While changing tides bring new views and new

Local lore makes for interesting family discussions and imaginative speculation. Be sure to quiz the native islanders (the island has a permanent population of just over 100 residents) about favorite local tales, including the ghost story of The Gray Man and the legend of the Pawleys Island shell. Then, gather your crew on the porch for a little embellishment of your own. Enjoy a Shelling and Lighthouse Tour (Rover Tours, 735 Front Street, Georgetown, SC 29440) departing from historic Georgetown, just a 15-minute drive from the island. This four-hour tour takes guests through the waters of Winyah Bay to explore uninhabited barrier islands. Views of the historic lighthouse and playful dolphin add to the trip’s allure.

Where to eat

Pawleys Island Tavern (10635 Ocean Hwy) is known locally as The PIT and is a favorite among islanders. The atmosphere is casual and the menu features low country favorites. Bistro 217 (10707 Ocean Highway), adds a fine dining option in a comfortable setting. Steaks, seafood, pasta and specialty desserts are served. For more on South Carolina,
