Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, allowing us a chance to share our favorite foods while noting the things for which we are thankful. That first Thanksgiving in Plymouth, MA and each one to 1941 was declared an annual celebration until Theodore Roosevelt signed it into a permanent law. While the holiday still focuses on family and remembering our blessings, modern day society has encouraged a highly commercialized holiday weekend with Black Friday and Cyber Monday following as the biggest shopping days of the year. A survey by the National Retail Federation also found that 34 million people planned to shop on Thanksgiving day in 2018. So with that in mind, this issue focuses on markets, shows, unique shopping destinations and holiday events to help with your gift selections. To help Americans find the best places to go for Thanksgiving without breaking the bank, WalletHub compared the 100 largest U.S. cities based on 20 key metrics. Their data set ranges from cost of Thanksgiving dinner and share of delayed flights to volunteer opportunities per capita and forecasted precipitation. Food Fun M

y husband is from Texas. During the past thirty five years, I’ve learned a lot about having a Texas point of view. The best way for me to express it came from a radio commercial which summed it up quite well. “If you refer to a cookout for 350 people as a ‘casual backyard barbeque,’ then you just might have a Texas attitude.”

Cooking for a large group is something most of us do only during the holidays. It is typical for meal prep that is usually for two to eight, to become cooking for twelve to thirty. This is a huge undertaking for most. The possible exception being professional cooks or in my case, Disaster Relief volunteers. Experience has taught most of us how to walk into a kitchen, take a quick inventory of available ingredients and whip up a tasty meal, sometimes while supervising a crew and planning the next meal at the same time. Then there are those who must have structure and order. When cooking, they need exact recipes, a grocery list of specific ingredients and a schedule of when to do

what so it will all be ready at the right time. Relax, I’m here to help – with one meal at least. There is an abundance of recipes and cooking tips available related to Thanksgiving Dinner. But let’s not forget breakfast. Without a good breakfast, your family, friends and guests will be pestering those with kitchen duty all morning long asking for taste testing privileges. So fill ‘em up early!

BAKED OATMEAL

½ c. vegetable oil ¾ c. white sugar 2 eggs 2 c. milk ½ tsp. salt 1 T. baking powder 3 c. quick oats ½ c. raisins, optional

Mix altogether and place in a sprayed 9 x 13” pan. Mix 2 ta-

blespoons brown sugar with ½ teaspoon cinnamon and sprinkle on top of the oat mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator overnight. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes the next morning. This has become a favorite among members of our Disaster Relief teams.* Oats give our volunteers sustained energy for hours without fear of a sugar crash while working. Of course, I always check recipes to see if they are versatile. This one is very easy to adjust to your own liking. Even if you add extra cinnamon or substitute cranberries and chopped apples for the raisins, it remains quite easy to prepare, especially for a large group. My very first article for this publication was the topic: Cooking for a Crowd. The recipe included still makes me giggle at the thought of something which sounds so ridiculous tasting so good. That was seventeen years ago, so perhaps I should reprint that story. Be watching for it in future issues. With winter weather coming, you’ll be sure to love it . . . even if you’re from Texas. *Special thanks to Joann for sharing this recipe!

Read a Good Book

A

s the days turn darker and colder and the season for beach holiday getaways approaches, I wanted to reach out to see if you’d be interested in receiving a review copy of BOUND IN FLAME: The Hawaiian Ladies’ Riding Society, Book #1 -- the delightful debut novel from author Katherine Kayne, just released on October 28th. Recently selected by Publishers Weekly as one of twenty-five semifinalists for the prestigious annual BookLife Prize, BOUND IN FLAME is being called “a rip-roaring, smart, and vivid romantic adventure with a truly dynamic and memorable heroine [and] an exceptionally appealing Hawaiian setting and a wildly unusual premise. Kayne’s imaginative landscape will cast a spell on readers.” A must-read for anyone who is fascinated by Hawaii and its history, prefers the feisty heroine, craves heroes with a sense of humor, and wants to believe there could still be magic in the world, BOUND IN FLAME is a wonderfully entertaining and diligently researched read with great care for and deep roots in Hawaii’s intriguing and little-known history. “By the turn of the twentieth century, Hawaii was a study in contrasts,” shares Kayne, who counts herself fortunate to live on Hawaii Island for part of each year. “Cowboys and kahunas, wild pigs and steamships, hula

dancers and rickshaws, land barons and mail-order brides made up the stuff and substance of the islands’ colorful history.” “Although BOUND IN FLAME is pure fiction, I created the world of the Hawaiian Ladies’ Riding Society to tell the stories of the fearless horsewomen of the islands’ ranches,” she continues. “If you come along for the ride, be prepared for almost anything to

happen. I can promise you fiery kisses, charming cowboys, women who ride like the rainbow to save the day, and that rarest of beasts: handsome men who like to dance.”

Singing contractors Two of the hardest-working guys in gospel music, Aaron Gray and Josh Arnett, are gearing up to celebrate the holiday season with their newest album and concert special. “Building a Christmas to Remember” is available now at all Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® locations nationwide. The Singing Contractors do more than build houses; they’re also masters at inspiring and uplifting others by building beautiful harmonies. The foundation of their musical career was laid when their video of “How Great Thou Art” while working on a job site went viral. Since that first video, they have released a successful debut CD and DVD recording, “Working on a Building, Hymns & Gospel Classics.” Since its release in early 2019, it has garnered wide acclaim - debuting at Number 1 on Billboard’s music video charts The duo recently won Favorite New Artist at the 2019 Singing News Fan Awards. Building a Christmas to Remember finds the hammer-swinging boys spreading holiday cheer with Christmas classics such as “Winter Wonderland,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The burly, bearded builders also have a bit of Christmastime fun on the album with a rendition of “The Chipmunk

Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late).” Most importantly, the pair use their God-given musical gifts to remind us of the reason for the season with the heartwarming Christmas hymns “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World,” “Mary, Did You Know?” and more. For both men, singing was a part of their upbringing. Raised in Charleston, Illinois, Gray, the son of a preacher, traveled and performed with his family band. Arnett grew up in Anderson, Indiana, and also spent time touring and singing with his musical family. These family performances are how the two met as teens. the pair later reconnected when Gray moved to Indiana and they ended up subcontracting with the same builder. After their first video went viral, Gray and Arnett shot into the spotlight in a whirlwind that included an appearance on local Indianapolis news before “Fox & Friends” asked them to fly to

New York and sing for a national audience. In the years since, they’ve been hard at work at their day jobs while enjoying the experience of making albums and traveling the country to meet and inspire others. Building a Christmas to Remember is the next big part of that inspirational journey. The album and concert DVD (filmed live at Gaither Studios) are sure to make fans’ hearts merry and bright. The Singing Contractors’ Building a Christmas to Remember CD will be available on The Gaither Store on October 25th, while the DVD will be available on November 22nd. Building a Christmas to Remember is exclusively distributed by Capitol Christian Distribution and Universal Music and will be available throughout general market stores and the Christian marketplace in addition to online retailers including iTunes, Amazon, TheSingingContractors. com and Gaither.com. The DVD features several DIY segments from the guys, who demonstrate how to create several Christmas decoration pieces as well as a behind-the-scenes interview with Arnett and Gray who share their own personal Christmas memories and traditions.

Bay B

By Kathryn Walls Guest Editor/ www.AmericanRoads.net

100 Men Hall is one of Bay Saint

Louis, Mississippi’s best kept secrets. In 1894, 12 African Americans in Bay Saint Louis created an organization called the Hundred Members Debating Benevolent Association. The group’s main purpose was to “assist its members when sick, bury its dead in a respectable manner and knit friendship.” Each member put up a between twenty five to fifty cents a month and then if disaster struck a member, he or she was given funds by the group to help out. The group grew bigger. One of the men worked on the railroad right nearby. He saw land for sale for $100. They bought it and first built an outdoor pavilion and then in 1922 they built the hall. They did fund raisers to raise needed money and were a popular venue for musicians on the Chitlin’ Circuit to play. Until 1982 it was the heart of African Americans in the Bay. Some of the all-time greats like Etta James, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Ernie Kaydo, Professor Longhair, and James Brown preformed there. It was named a stop on the Mississippi Blues Trail. When you step inside you feel the history. It suffered deterioration over the years. Katrina almost ended it; but Kerrie and Jesse Loyas saved it and restored it. They recently sold it to Rachel Dangermond. Rachael expanded from music to cultural events of every nationality and plans to add writer workshops and retreats. She has plans to restore a shed on the property for an artist in residency. They are doing a Day of the Dead celebration. There will be a Kwanzaa celebration. For Christmas there is a Black Santa. For Thanks-42- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ November, 2019

giving, there is a potluck event where the neighbors are welcome to pop in with their favorite dish to share. The Hall even has its own resident ghost, Richard. Rachel said when the previous owners were there would move a heavy table around and open and close doors. They brought a psychic in and she confirmed that Richard is present but not malignant. She told them to just tell him “Stop it, Richard,” when he manifests. That works. Rachael said she had not seen him but often feels his presence. It was convenient for Black musicians back in the day. The L and N Railway stopped at the depot just a few blocks away. After playing the Hall, a musician could just head over to the depot and hop the next passing railcar to hitch a ride to New Orleans

Blues

or their next gig. Today, the Depot has been beautifully renovated and functions as the city’s visitor’s center. It has multiple claims to fame. It once served as the centerpiece of the film, “This Property is Condemned” starring Robert Redford and Natalie Wood. It is also a museum showcasing the elaborate costumes of its two Mardi Gras krewes, some of the Bay’s history and a museum for the art of folk artist, Alice Moseley. The historic L and N Train Depot is designated a “Mississippi Landmark.” The 100 Men Hall is still operated as a 501 C nonprofit. They still raise money for things like a musician who recently died to be buried with dignity. After all these years, it is still serving its community.

Things to Do:

Relive Old English Charm at D by Beverly Kerr God bless us every one! Those words of Tiny Tim from Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” ring out over Cambridge, Ohio each holiday season as their downtown is magically transformed into Dickens Victorian Village. Charles Dickens would have enjoyed walking Wheeling Avenue in Cambridge, Ohio during November and December. The downtown becomes Merry Olde England with scenes from Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” as well as those that portray life at that time. Stroll down the street as you view the 94 scenes with 164 life-size mannequins dressed in Victorian style. They can be found under every lamppost for five blocks. Read the brass plaques to discover the connection to Charles Dickens and Victorian times. The Dickens Creative Team refurbishes the scenes each year working from February through October. Repairs are made on everything from damaged clothing to problems with the framework. The small details they include with hats, capes, and jewelry make the scenes come to life. This year a special book has been created for Dickens Victorian Village by a local writers’ group, Rainy Day Writers, with pictures and stories of each of those 94 scenes. Pick up a copy for a great memory of your visit back to Victorian times. Stop at the Dickens Welcome Center and Curiosity Shoppe to learn more about the events taking place each weekend. Here you will also find Imagination Station where guests can dress in Victorian costume and have their pictures taken with the figure of Charles Dickens himself, or in front of a beautiful Christmas tree.
