Up Close: From the Editor

I was born and raised in the city which hosted the Missouri State Fair. We lived close enough to watch the nightly fireworksfrom our backyard. Every year on my Dad’s day off, we packed the picnic basket and headed for the fairgrounds for an all day excursion. We parked in the Kathy Barnett / parking lot closest to the carnival because Senior Editor that’s where we would spend our final hours of the evening. As a teen, I worked in our church tent, allowing me free daily admission. During breaks, we were allowed to walk around (straight to the carnival no more having to wait until nightfall) with friends. Oh, I enjoyed other attractions and even won a few blue ribbons at the Home Economics building. I think the prize money back then was less than the cost of ingredients for cookies, or cake, or whatever baked goods were entered.

I met some of my favorite celebrities at the fair. My first concert was at the State Fair. Many pleasant memories were created as we enjoyed all the places to go, the things to do, and the people to see.

Today, there are over 3200 fairs in North America held each year, according to the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, and attendance is still booming. Several draw over a million visitors each year. You’ll still find most of the things you’d have seen at those early fairs today. There is still the chance to show off the best agriculture, livestock, horticulture and other products from that region. But you’ll also find a whole lot more, and part of the appeal is unabashed celebration of sheer quirkiness—where else can you find veggies on steroids, moose-calling contests, butter sculptures, and not just racing pigs, but racing dogs with monkey jockeys?

There are rodeos, demo derbys, monster trock pulls, and live musical entertainment to experiences. So pick out your favorite celebrity concert or activity, or contest listed throughout the following pages...

And we’ll see you at the fair!

American Boy Band O-Town

With almost 20 years under their belt, the American boy band O-Town is headed back out on the road for their Pop 2000 Tour hosted by Lance Bass of NSYNC along with new music coming this summer.

O-Town will be performing at House of Blues: Cambridge Room in Cleveland, OH on Thursday, July 11. Music starts at 7:00 p.m. Who says #Throwbacks are only reserved for Thursdays?

The group, which originally formed in 2000 on the first season of MTV’s “Making The Band,” will share the stage with pop sensations Aaron Carter, Ryan Cabrera and Tyler Hilton as they jam to Y2K pop hits. In addition to their Pop 2000 Tour, O-Town will be headlining shows in Columbus, OH and Boston, MA as well as supporting American pop and contemporary R&B vocal group, 98 Degrees, during their stints in Regina, SK and London, Ontario. Food Fun There’s nothing quite like having company for a week to help you see your home with a fresh perspective, especially the areas you don’t see multiple times a day. In my case, having two young relatives stay with me while their mother recovered from surgery caused me to inspect my closets, drawers and cabinets with a very critical eye. I caught myself trying to reinforce good habits in their daily routine while at the same time rummaging through a cluttered, jumbled mess of various health and beauty aids under the sink in my bathroom.

Reality check: so much for “taking that extra two seconds to put it back where it belongs.” The result? I spent two days purging a multi-decade collection of partially used sprays, ointments, creams and lotions. Some were empty, others smelled rancid and a few were dried up. You know it is time to throw them away when they rattle. There were even some tubes of body lotion which had never been opened. It didn’t surprise me there were so many. It did surprise me that I had moved some of them from house to house to house to house . . . (let me stop and count) . . . yep, one more: to house.

I found a sample I was given in a mall 21 years ago. I was to use it and be ready to answer some survey questions within two weeks.

I don’t remember what I said about it, but I must not have been

too impressed if I never finished using all of it. Then I found an array of OTC products for various ailments – all expired.

Don’t forget the collection of used toothbrushes being saved for scrubbing small spaces. Who am I kidding? If it is small enough to need cleaning with a toothbrush, it is too small for anyone to notice the dirt. Besides, I don’t use one of those but about once or twice a year. If I stick to that schedule, I have enough for the next decade and then some!

About now, you might be wondering what any of this has to do with traveling. Simple. I have found that a ‘staycation’ isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. After all, projects around the house are WORK! I found myself wishing there was something entertaining to do so I would have an excuse to ignore the work, get out of the house and go somewhere.

If there was a festival going on nearby, that would have been perfect. Alas, nothing in our area this week. However, next week is covered and the week after that. Check out all the wonderful

options in this issue. Find something interesting in your area and take the day off! Go. See. Do. All that work you are arguing with yourself about doing or not doing will still be there when you get back.

“But who will cook dinner?” you may ask. I’m way ahead of you on this one. Who says it has to be cooked? Here’s a new twist on an old favorite which is also an easy to prepare dish for picnics and cookouts. In this month when patriotism is high, in addition to making a cake with white icing topped with strawberries and blueberries to look like a flag, try this: OLD GLORY DIP In a rectangular dish, layer refried beans, guacamole, salsa, shredded cheddar cheese and then sour cream. Use sliced black olives to fill a small rectangle of the surface in one corner. Then use cherry or grape tomatoes, cut in half, and position them to create stripes across the length of the dish. Serve with your favorite chips. Easy to make. Easy to adapt. Easy to transport. Easy to eat. Easy to clean up. In other words, practically perfect in every way. Maybe our surgery patient would appreciate one more day off to recover, so I might take her some when I stop by to deliver a get well basket . After dinner she can relax with some new body lotion. That is, all except the one that rattled.

Glamping on Flor

S

uppose you love camping but your mate craves luxury hotels. There is a compromise; go glamping.

I recently experienced glamping at its best using Glamping Hub and stayed at Headwaters Jupiter, an Eco Retreat on the Loxahatchee River. You would not believe how comfortable residing in three recycled shipping container can be.

My friend and I each had our own personal space. It could accommodate eight people so we had lots of room.

There are two bedrooms and a small bath upstairs with a fridge and microwave. Downstairs, besides the bedrooms and nice bath, there is a full and well equipped kitchen, dining area, and living room. A two hour kayaking trip at nearby Jupiter Outdoor Center is included. Naturally, the air conditioning and wifi worked perfectly. The containers-turned-luxury-gamping spot boasts an upstairs and downstairs patio where you can sit out and enjoy the view; the Loxahatchee River directly behind the lodging, flowers and trees all around and a campfire and barbecue area in your back yard. Could Heaven be any better?

There is so much to see nearby.

We explored neighboring Martin County where they pride themselves that there are no high-rises blocking the beach. Nature is important here. One of their best natural attractions is Jonathan Dickinson State Park. The park is named for a shipwrecked Quaker -10- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ JULY, 2019

merchant who along with his family and others was held captive by local Jobe Indians.

Another interesting character associated with the park is Trapper Nelson, the legendary Wild Man of the Loxahatchee’ whose spirit is said to still inhabit his cabin and the park.

You usually can tour the cabin but the day we visited the tour was not running.

You can bike, hike, ride the equestrian trails or go canoeing and kayaking on the Loxahatchee River. It has an observation tower with a view from Indian River to the Atlantic.

The coastal sand hills, upland lakes, and scrub forests unique ecosystems are home to many species of wildlife. We saw two momma sandhill cranes and their babies that seemed unafraid of humans. They paraded around with their chicks and got so close I could almost touch them. The park has a campground, too.

Another great natural resource is the Florida Oceanographic Society. It’s located in Stuart, FL on 57-acres on Hutchinson Island between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the perfect mix of education and entertainment about sea life in the Atlantic Ocean.

You will see everything from stingrays to sharks. The turtle tank is inhabited by sea turtles that cannot be rehabilitated and returned to the sea. Behind the main center, there is a nature walk.

For a touch of history mixed with the paranormal take Port Salerno Ghost Tours with Patricia and Patrick Mesmer. Their tours tell of the area’s bloody history. Stories about

Local legend John Ashley, a Robin Hood style bank robber and bootlegger, is just one of the historic characters you learn about.

It is so detailed Patrick showed us a map where John Ashley’s lived.

Don Pedro Gilbert, a vicious South American pirate who frequented Martin County, is another story that provided reasonable fodder for a ghost story. The history and authenticity of the tour make it a must see.

We visited two very different houses, Mansion at Tuckahoe and the tiny House of Refuge. The Mansion at Tuckahoe sits atop Mt. Elizabeth, a 4,000 year-old Indian mound. Before the present

mansion it was a pineapple and citrus plantation. In 1936, Atlanta businessman Willaford Leach and his wife Anne Bates Leach, one of the Coca Cola heirs, bought the property and in 1939, built the Mediterranean Revival mansion.

They named it “Tuckahoe” for a Native American word meaning “Welcome.”

Our docent told us, “Mr. Leach frequently complained about what he considered the unfairly high taxes.” Eventually he sold it to the Catholic Sisters of St. Joseph for a college. The docent told us “He sold it for $75,000.” The fact that churches didn’t have to pay taxes must have figured in that ridiculously low price.

The Mansion at Tuckahoe hosts tours at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. every first and third Wednesday of the month from September through

May. The House of Refuge opened in 1876 as the second one to open. It is the only one left of ten that was construed. It was designed for refuge not rescue and was the brainchild of Superintendant Kimball of the U.S. Lifesaving Service, a precursor to the Coast Guard, who decided there was a need to offer shelter to those unfortunate enough to wash up on the beach. Over the years it became a coast guard station and later a naval station and even a turtle rescue station.

The museum focus is on that original refuge mission. Darlene led us thought the small, one bedroom home that accommodated a keeper, his family, and as many refugees as might wash up after a shipwreck were put in the loft. The home is furnished as it would have been when keepers lived there.

The basement houses many artifacts of the shipwrecks that happened along the coast. It’s a small treasure trove of artifacts, shells, placards telling about the keepers over the years, the wrecks, prehistoric and historic records of Indians who dwelt along Florida’s coast. It tells about the coast Guard years and even about the turtle rescue that existed in this one humble building. There is a corner dedicated to the equipment used to rescue people form shipwrecks.

Elliott Museum took us in a more technical environment. The first exhibit you see on entering is a Foucault Pendulum. This simple device demonstrates the earth’s

rotation by knocking down pins as the pendulum swings and the earth moves in orbit.

Mainly, the museum showcases the inventions of Sterling Elliott and his son Harmon. He was the first to build a bicycle specifically for women. His bike was the first that had a place to accommodate bustles. He went on to invent the quadricycle. Later he moved on the cars. Some of the highlights are the three antique autos; a regular gas car, a steam powered one and an electric car. Yes, the electric car is not a brand new idea. Our guide, Jean, told us her maiden name is Elliott but she had no idea if she was related to Sterling. She also showed us that this is the kind of car where the term “back seat driver” came from. The two front seats can turn to face the back and the person in back would drive the car. The car was considered very expensive. It sold for $3000.

To the back, there is a three story “car vending machine” where you pick out the car you want to see.

A robotic control picks the car and puts it on the turntable and lowers it where you can view it. Upstairs there is a lot of Americana exhibits, a general store, pharmacy, a baseball exhibit, a tribute to actress Frances Langford and more.

Our adventure was so much fun.

SACRAMENTO – The California State Fair is dedicated as a place to celebrate the best the state has to offer in agriculture, technology and the diversity of its people, traditions and trends that shape the Golden State’s future.

It has partnered with Dish to bring a series of innovative and exciting Drone Light Shows by Great Lakes Drone Company (GLDC) to Cal Expo during the fair each day. Drones along with swarm technology will be utilized to light up the night skies around Cal Expo to choreographed music, creating stunning visuals and patterns that will provide entertainment to fairgoers. The Drone Light Show will replace the traditional fireworks show and takes place at the Miller Lite Racetrack Grandstand. The visuals created by the drones can be seen as far as two football fields away.

“Our team is working diligently to bring new and exciting forms of entertainment to the California State Fair,” said Rick Picker-

ing, Cal Expo General Manager and CEO. “For over 165 years, the State Fair has been a place to showcase innovation. We’re pleased to partner with Dish to bring this technology to the California State Fair to entertain families in a more inclusive way.”

Drone light shows are considered to be more environmentally safe, and inclusive to families and those who have sensitivities to loud explosions created by traditional fireworks. Pickering noted that in 2015 the California State Fair received national notoriety when it created the Inaugural

United States Drone Racing Championship, leading to advancements in drone technology and dimensional goggles.

“We are looking forward to being a part of the entertainment line-up for the California State Fair this year, producing a 80 drone custom show with the latest swarm technology utilizing bright color-changing LED lights, creating a variety shapes, and 3-dimensional formations is sure to amaze,” said Matt Quinn, Director of Operations and CEO of GLDC. The drone light show will be available every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night throughout the duration of the California State Fair, July 12-28, and is open to those who have purchased a general admission ticket.

PUEBLO - When you attend the Colorado State Fair, you are in for some unusal, not-to-befound-anywhere-else fun. The 11 day event, Aug. 23 - Sept. 2, is chuck full of concerts, demo derby rodeo, livestock shows, horse shows, carnival, agriculture competitions and more. Then there are the one-of-a-kind events.

Many states have pageants, but only Colorado crowns a silver queen. It’s your typical pageant with one catch. Each competitor must be a nursing home resident.

At the other end of the spectrum is the Little Britches Rodeo National Championships. There’s a competition for everyone in Colorado, even the less athletically oriented because it is the only state fair offering a Pet Rock Olympics.

Several new events and attractions are coming to the annual event this year. The fair will now host the “World Slopper Eating Championship.” The competition will be hosted by Major League Eating, the same group that hosts the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Another new attraction will be platform divers. The performers

will be diving into pools from an 80 foot platform. Come join us for this lighthearted, family fun competition!

Places to Go : TAMPA - While The Florida State Fair isn’t until February, 2020, there are several events worth attending at the state fair grounds.

SharkCon is an event held on July 13 adn14 at the Expo Hall that brings those who love the ocean together for a weekend of education and the fun of a Comic Con. SharkCon has something for everyone who loves the ocean.

There will be a huge interactive exhibit from the presenting sponsor, The Florida Aquarium, which includes games, trivia, and more.

Busch Gardens is bringing an exhibit with touch tanks, games, conservation information, shark, facts and information. The Clearwater Aquarium is bringing an exhibit that will teach you about marine mammal rescue and they

will have touch tanks.

The 22 foot shark slide will be back and the pirate ship and octopus bounce house. The Go Dive Now Pool will be back to give those who have never tried scuba experience a chance to check it out.

Florida Fish and Wildlife will return with their hands on shark and ray identification. There will be tons of different activities for your kids through the nonprofit partners like Sharks4Kids, Tampa Bay Watch, Oceana, Shark Research Institute and Shark Angels.

Capt YAK will be teaching kayaking techniques. Over all there will

Western Idaho State Fair BOISE - During the Fair, Aug. 16 -25, you can literally rock and roll at night, and party every day.

The Western Idaho State Fair has literally been the social event of the summer to attend since it started in 1897.

With Boise’s strong agricultural roots, the first Fair featured three major departments: livestock (sheep, cattle, horses and hogs), products of the soil and a domestic manufacturing/home department. These bigger categories were subdivided in later years into smaller departments that can still be found today.

Featuring bona fide rock stars and country music legends, fair grandstand acts are free with fair admission. With the Boise foothills as a backdrop, the DISH Grandstand sets the stage for real star power. Jam out from a grassy dancefloor or open (but limited) stadium seating.

Illinois State Fair SPRINGFIELD - The 2019 Illinois State Fair runs from August 8th through August 18th. The Fairgrounds are open from 7 a.m. to Midnight for the duration of the Fair. The Fair Administration Office is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Butter Cow has been an unofficial icon of the fair since the 1920’s. 500 pounds of unsalted butter are used to sculpt the life size figure by hand. The process takes about five days. Don’t miss the unveiling of the Butter Cow located inside the Dairy Building!

DES MOINES - The countdown has begun for the Iowa State Fair scheduled for August 8-18, 2019.

Iowa’s State Fair is spotlighted as the only Iowa destination and the only state fair in the country as one of the world’s must-see events listed by New York Time’s Best Sellers in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. A proud tradition since 1854, the Fair inspired the internationally-acclaimed novel, State Fair, three motion pictures, plus Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical. Special features include one of the world’s largest livestock shows, the country’s largest state fair foods department (approx. 900 classes), the state’s largest arts show, hundreds of competitive events and wacky contests; hundreds of exhibitors, over 200 concessionaires selling tasty treats, and 160 rolling acres of campgrounds.

Come celebrate 50y ears of Sesame Street by seeing your favorite characters sculpted in butter. Standing alongside the iconic Iowa State Fair butter cow, Sesame Street will come alive in the John Deere Agriculture Building throughout the Iowa State Fair.

Kids of all ages will remember their favorite characters and lessons as they walk by the butter cooler. The butter cow has been sculpted at the Iowa State Fair since 1911. Various companion sculptures have joined the butter cow since 1996, including the American Gothic, Elvis Presley, the Peanuts Gang, Harry Potter and many more popular events, people or characters.

Goat Yoga is returning to the Iowa State Fair on August 12, 14 and 17 in the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center. Places to Go: Sept. 6-15

HUTCINSON - A new festival the first weekend of the Kansas State Fair will feature the treasures and tourist attractions found in Kansas communities.

The Explore Kansas Festival — a showcase of Kansas culture, history, events and attractions — will take place the first weekend of the Fair, Sept.

7-8, in Gottschalk Park.

This festival is a way to educate fairgoers about Kansas’ many attractions all in one place. Visitors will see an interactive display of Kansas byways, dig for a lost village, learn about one of the nation’s oldest town picnics and celebrate the upcoming 200th birthday of the Santa Fe Trail.

The two-day showcase creates a place for the public to discover Kansas’ unique treasures. A few of the communities represented are: Erie — famous for its annual Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion, held during the second

full week of July. The reunion features a Free Bean Feed. The beans are prepared using a historic recipe, simmering all day in cast-iron kettles over wood fires. This reunion has been conducted continuously since 1873 and is claimed to be the oldest consecutively running Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion in the country.

Ark City’s Lost City of Etzanoa — In June 2015, archaeologist Dr. Don Blakeslee led a wide-ranging field study in central and southern Kansas.

One of his primary goals was to rediscover the long-lost Native American city of Etzanoa.

He was successful. It was in the present location of Arkansas City, Kansas. This site is now available for tours.

Santa Fe Trail — William Becknell, known as the Father of the Santa Fe Trail, left Missouri for Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1821. More than half the trail runs through Kansas and many remnants of the trail

still exist. The Santa Fe Trail was the first international trail between the United States and Mexico. The Santa Fe Trail Association will have a display celebrating the trail’s heritage.

The Explore Kansas Festival can help visitors find unique cafes, fishing holes, hiking trails, next summer’s vacation spot, historic sites, natural landmarks, museums, arts and culture and events.

The fair has already filled one tent for the festival and is working on a second location.

Grandstand entertainment at the fair includes concerts by Bobby Bones and the Raging Idiots, Billy Currington, Skillet, Francesca Battistelli and Zach Williams, and Lauren Alaina, Hanson. An All Star Monster Truck Tour will be Sept. 15.

The Big E: New England’s Great State Fair

If time or budget doesn’t permit you attend one big fair each year, then New England’s Great State allows you t o visit six states in one at the Avenue of States. Fair The Big E is a 17 day extravaganza of exhibits, entertainment, agriculture, and of course food. With something for everyone, it’s no wonder that The Big E now draws over one million visitors annually to one of the country’s oldest and most revered fall festivals.

With its long and rich tradition, The Big E has transformed itself over the years to really become one of the largest and most visited attractions here in Massachusetts.

The Big E is currently the sixth largest state fair in the country and the largest on the east coast.

each New England state has its own building. The building and land that they sit on actually belong to the individual states so this is the only place where someone can visit all six New England states within a few minutes.

Come Big E time the buildings become a hub of activity as each state puts its best foot forward in displaying their wares and unique native foods. If you are in the mood for a baked potato then by all means head to the Maine state building. Have a hankering for fried clams or Del’s Lemonade, then head to the Rhode Island building. Looking for tourist information about Cape Cod, then stop into the Massachusetts building.

Each state really goes all out to promote the best that they have to offer. It’s a great way to discover

all six New England states in one convenient location.

Originally conceived by Joshua Brooks as a means of showcasing and expanding New England’s agricultural base, the 175-acre site in West Springfield was purchased early in the 20th century and developed with cattle barns and a Coliseum. When a group of New England businessmen convinced the National Dairy Show to move their annual fair from Chicago to West Springfield in 1916 the site was christened with its first event.

NOVI - Each year the day before the fair opens to the public, (Aug. 28 this year), a Charity Sneak Peek is hosted. A “Friends of the Fair Night”is held in conjunction the event, which honors the dedication of our active military members and their families.

It is one small way to recognize their great commitment and service to the United States of America. The evening will also host some of the Shriner youngsters and their families from the area Shriners Hospitals for Children® who are currently undergoing medical treatment as the result of the hard work and dedication of the Shriners volunteer organization. Children from the Detroit area Rainbow Connection and Special Olympics as well as many other local charitable organizations are being invited to join in the fun!

JACKSON - The annual Mississippi State Fair begins the first Wednesday in October each year and usually is scheduled to run for 12 days (Oct. 2-13).

This year for the first time, the 160th fair dates are being extended to include Columbus Day, Oct.14th since school will be out and many workers have paid holidays.

The Mississippi State Fair is one of the South’s major fairs with 673,098 attending in 2010. The milelong midway, free major entertainment, livestock shows, and 120,000 sq. ft. of exhibits are the main attractions.

Enjoy your favorite fair food and rides.There are also numerous livestock shows, creative arts competitions, the edge of your seat circus, and musical entertainment. Fun for the whole family.

In addition to a 13th day in 2019, the fair will also soon welcome the new Mississippi Trade Mart, which is now under construction adjacent to the Mississippi Coliseum. It is scheduled for completion

in late 2019, but not in time for the fair.

Montana Fair

GREAT FALLS - The 2019 Montana State Fair will be celebrating its 88th anniversary with another summer full of fun FROM July 26 - Aug. 3.

Born during the rise of grunge and alternative rock, COLLECTIVE SOUL broke into mainstream popularity when they rose to international fame in 1993 with the rock anthem “Shine.” The multi-platinum quintet will perform July 27. They have been making music for two decades since then and has a catalog of #1 hits under their belts. Collective Soul helped shape and define alternative rock with lots of guitars and attitude.

TRACY BYRD will take the stage on Monday, July 29. Tracy Byrd became a household name on the Country Music Scene in 1993 when his third single, called “Holdin’ Heaven”, off of his MCA Records, self-titled debut album, hit #1 on the Billboard Country Charts. The Album also included the remake hit of Johnny Paycheck’s “Someone to Give my Love to”cementing Byrd as a Traditional Country Troubadour!! ALBUQUERQUE - New Mexico State Fair officials have announced the theme and logo for the 2019 New Mexico State Fair. In keeping with the fair’s values of inclusion, acceptance, and love, this year’s theme will be “Love is in the Fair.”

The message is aimed at reminding visitors the fair is much more than concerts and corndogs. The message of love, inclusion and community is a message of unity and intended to convey the sentiment of cherished memories with friends and family.

RALEIGH - At 155 feet, the tallest mobile Ferris wheel in North America is coming to the N.C. State Fair October 17 - 27.

The new Ferris wheel towers 62 feet over Dorton Arena and will sit between the historic arena and Hillsborough St. with a panoramic view of over 15 miles. Midland & Scotty McCreery OKLAHOMA – The 2019 Oklahoma State Fair will present the PRCA Xtreme Bulls & Broncs, Double Trouble Tour & Concerts featuring rocking performances by Midland and Scotty McCreery on September 20 and 21, respectively.

Midland will take to the stage after the cowboys have left the arena during the PRCA Xtreme Bulls & Broncs, Double Trouble Tour & Concerts on Friday, September 20. Midland offers a rich sound that is rooted in tradition. Their critically acclaimed freshman album, On The Rocks launched to rave reviews and was declared “the year’s best Country album.”

There are 36 county fairs throughout this great state, and each one is a source of local pride. This competition — “The Best of the Best” — takes that pride up a notch by providing an even bigger and more public platform for competition winners from counties. Think of it as a throwback to the good ol’ days, when all roads did indeed lead to the Oregon State Fair.

The Best of the Best Competition features three primary areas of competition: Livestock — via existing FFA and 4-H competitions Talent Show — via the Oregon Fairs Talent Search Static Displays — via our Creative Living Department Livestock Competition When 4-H and FFA participants enter their animals in competition at the county fair level, winners are automatically eligible to compete at the State Fair as part of The Best of the Best Competition.

Oldest Known Fair in York

The traditions of fairs in the New World began with the York Fair, America’s first fair, held in the historic old Town of York in 1765, eleven years before the nation was founded.

The York County Agricultural Society Board of Directors has voted to change the dates of the York Fair. Effective in 2020, the York Fair will take place July 24 through August 2. The 2019 dates will remain September 6 through September 15.

“Regardless of the date for which the Fair is held, the York Fair will continue to be America’s First Fair and will carry on many of the outstanding traditions such as agriculture and entertainment that the Fair has built in its 253year history”, stated Bryan Blair current COO. The decision to change the Fair dates is based upon fair trends, research and discussions with participants, vendors, exhibitors, and Life Members. Another important factor in the change of dates is that schools will not be in session, which allows the potential for families to have more time at the Fair and to not compete with -58- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ JULY, 2019

school related activities.

“The York Fair will also look to establish new traditions around the July date and explore bringing back some of the traditions that have perhaps disappeared in recent years. The staff and board members plan to work to become a community partner and build community relations with many local organizations and individuals as we make the York Fair the showcase of the year for all things York and southern Pennsylvania.

My goal as the incoming CEO is to produce the highest quality Fair, regardless of the time of year, and we will be giving the Fair a new look that will be noticeable in 2020 to go along with our date change”, stated Blair.

The York Fair also will work to enhance the educational component of the Fair so that it can continue to give people an opportunity to learn about agriculture and local industry. Livestock is shown at Fairs throughout the

country in the summer and with the date change being announced at this time, there is adequate time for the exhibitors to make this transition here in York. The date change also allows for the potential of higher quality concert entertainment in the summer time, and Deggeller Attractions has agreed to continue as the midway provider in July.

The Outlaws & Renegades Tour featuring Travis Tritt & the Charlie Daniels Band will be coming to the York Fair on Thursday, September 12 at 7pm showtime. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, January 19 at 9:00 am.

2019 will marks the 53rd year of the Washington County Fair!

Owned and operated by the volunteers of the Washington County Pomona Grange, the Washington County Fair, a non-profit organization, has been a great New England tradition for the past 52 years! The Fair is Rhode Island’s largest agricultural event. One of the biggest draws to the Fair is today’s Country Music Stars!

all daily concerts, special acts and events, the giant midway and kiddy land area (all ride tickets and games separate), all agricultural events and shows, exhibits and displays, tractor and horse pulls, the farm museum, and much, much more!

Admission is $11 for adults, and includes all Fair activities besides rides. Children 10 years of age and under are admitted free of charge. Parking is free!

Tickets do not include rides, ride tickets must be purchased inside the Fair.

Fair gates are open from 8am to 11pm, with most activities and vendors opening at 10 a.m.

Last shuttle to offsite parking leaves at 11:30 p.m.

The Fair features the Main Stage pine grove where you can relax and enjoy some of music’s

hottest acts. The Midway is full of the rides you look forward too every year, as well as some new additions! Also, for the second year, the Midway will feature New England’s largest traveling roller coaster!

Special kid’s competition games are scheduled each day, kicking off with a Three legged race at 1 p.m. Wednesday. There will be an egg toss, a mooing contest, potato sack race, pedal tractor pull and corn shucking contest.

Free Circus Fun is in store for State Fair Visitors

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina State Fair is adding a mix of new attractions to this year’s event in celebration of its 150th anniversary fair, which has been themed “Prize Winning Memories,” Oct. 9-20, in Columbia.

The S.C. State Fair will showcase a free, daily “CIRCUS at the Fair,” featuring colorful shows under a 1,300-seat big top with live performances including high-wire artists, daredevil motorists, clowns and more. The hour-long show will take place three times each day throughout the run of the fair. There is no additional cost for attending the circus, which is free with fair admission.

“We want to offer our patrons even more ways to enjoy the fair with their families this year, and this circus will combine a mix of the new with nostalgic entertainment that has captivated our state through the years,” said State Fair Manager Nancy Smith.

Guests will also experience their favorite Midway rides, fried treats, blue-ribbon produce, musical acts and more at this year’s fair.

“Our State Fair is a celebration of everything that is great about South Carolina, and we are excited to put that greatness on display again during our special 150th Anniversary event,” Smith said.

Music will continue to play a central role in this

year’s S.C. State Fair. There will be free, daily concerts in the 1,000-seat Pepsi Place arena featuring local and regional artists.

Other notable features of this year’s fair include a special pictorial postal cancellation stamp marking the 150th anniversary, a history of the S.C. State Fair, and a display of fair memorabilia.

Traditional favorites also will return for the 150th anniversary fair, including a Midway with 70+ rides, nearly 70 food stands, arts & crafts displays, pig races, livestock exhibits, stage shows and roving grounds entertainment. This year’s fair also will feature an expanded Heritage Village with historic cultural exhibits offering snapshots of yesteryear.

There will be no price increases for this year’s S.C. State Fair. Every county across the state will be represented during this year’s fair. Discount admission and ride tickets go on sale Wednesday, Sept. 4.

People To See: HURON. – The South Dakota State Fair has announced its 2019 State Fair theme – “There’s No Time Like Fair Time!”

“The 2019 theme highlights the genuine excitement and energy people have for the fair. Fair time is a special time of year!” said Peggy Besch, South Dakota State Fair manager. “Whether you show animals at the fair or just come for the grandstand, there is something special about walking onto the fairgrounds for the first time each year. The blend of fresh woodchips, hot corndogs and sweet cotton candy rush your nose as you head to your destination, bringing back memories of nights running around the carnival or days with friends and family in the barns. There just simply is no time like fair time.”

Each year the South Dakota State Fair boasts a variety of events including livestock shows, 4-H exhibits, carnival rides, free entertainment, and top-notch grandstand entertainment. The fair also hosts well over 400 vendors for fairgoers to visit.

An updated State Fair logo has also been designed.

The 2019 South Dakota State Fair will run from Thursday, Aug. 29, through Monday, Sept. 2. Channel Seeds preview night will be Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Agriculture is a major contributor to South Dakota’s economy, generating $25.6 billion in annual economic activity and employing over 115,000 South Dakotans. The South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s mission is to promote, protect and preserve South Dakota agriculture for today and tomorrow.

Little Big Town will hit the grandstand stage Aug. 31 with their concert. The band recently received their third career Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their multi-week #1 platinum-selling hit, “Better Man,” off their chart-topping album, “The Breaker.” Their latest album debuted #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and Top 5 on the Billboard 200 All Genre chart. In the past seven years they have won over 20 awards, including Grammys, CMAs, ACMs, People’s Choice awards, and an Emmy.

Brothers Osborne will perform at the grandstand Sunday, Sept. 1. Brothers Osborne have been climbing the country music charts since their debut in 2013 with hits like “Stay a Little Longer,” “It Ain’t My Fault,” and “Shoot Me Straight.”

DOSWELL— State Fair of Virginia organizers have re-focused their energies to “celebrate all things Virginia.” The event’s leadership has adopted a new mission to “nurture, preserve and celebrate the best of Virginia’s culture: past, present and future.”

“There’s nowhere like Virginia, and no event quite like the State Fair, and we’ll be planning this year’s fair with attention to three core values: inspiration, joy and preservation,” explained Marlene Jolliffe, the fair’s executive director.

“The State Fair is, first and foremost, a celebration, and there is an incredible bounty of things to celebrate about Virginia,” she added. “This includes artists, entertainers, craftspeople and generations of farmers who showcase what they raise, create and revere. Bringing all that together each year is what the fair is about.”

Accompanying the new mission is a new State Fair logo, created by Richmond-based Siddall Communications Inc. The 2019 State Fair of Virginia will run from Sept.

27 through Oct. 6 at its permanent home at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County.

CHIPPEWA FALLS -- The Northern Wisconsin State Fair (July 10-14) has made its final 2019 Main Stage Line Up announcement with the addition of the Roots and Boots 90’s Electric Throwdown Tour featuring Sammy Kershaw, Aaron Tippin and Collin Raye who will be performing July 10 at 8 p.m. and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts who will be taking the stage July 13 at 8 p.m.
