Following along the scenic Ohio River in the southern most tip of Indiana lies a trio of charming towns waiting to be discovered. From the historic allure of New Albany to the vibrant energy of Clarksville and Jeffersonville, this extended weekend getaway promises a delightful mix of culture, history, and entertainment. Join us on a road trip through Southern Indiana as we uncover the treasures of the region.

New Albany

Our journey begins in the quaint town of New Albany, where history comes to life on every corner.

Our first stop is the majestic Culbertson Mansion, a masterpiece of Victorian architecture frozen in time. Step back into the opulent world of the late 19th century as you wander through lavishly furnished rooms and marvel at the intricate details of this Gilded Age gem.

After immersing ourselves in the splendor of the Culbertson Mansion, it’s time to indulge in a culinary adventure. New Albany’s vibrant culinary scene offers something for every palate, from cozy cafes to upscale bistros. Take your taste buds on a journey through local and international flavors and savor the unique culinary creations the town has to offer.

We find ourselves drawn to the vibrant energy of New Albany’s downtown district. Explore the charming boutiques, eclectic galleries, and local artisan shops as you uncover hidden treasures and souvenirs to commemorate your journey.

Clarksville

As the sun begins to set, let’s make our way to the Derby Dinner Playhouse, where world-class entertainment awaits. Rise and shine, adventurers! After a hearty breakfast, today we venture out for spectacular views of the Ohio River and Indiana’s natural beauty.

The Falls of the Ohio State Park offers history ranging from prehistoric fossil beds to the Lewis and Clark expedition. The park features the largest exposed Devonian fossil bed in the world and is part of a 1,404-acre National Wildlife Conservation Area.

Spend some time at the Interpretive Center to view the educational exhibits. Hands-on attractions for the younger set is a great asset. There is also a nice gift shop for souvenirs.

After delving into the fascinating world of fossils, it’s time to satisfy our craving for adventure with a stroll along the Ohio River Greenway to neighboring Ashland Park. Take in breathtaking views of the Ohio River as you meander along walking trails, soak up the sunshine, and perhaps enjoy a leisurely picnic by the water’s edge.

Be sure to check out Clarksville’s newest park - Origin Park. The first amenities opened in 2023, including the Croghan Paddling Launch, a canoe launch and fishing access, and Mill Creek Trail, a natural surface trail winding through woods and wetlands.

If you’ve worked up an appetite, grab some regional brew and a stone fired pizza at Ten20 Brewery in Clarksville, located in the shadow of the historic Colgate Clock. For dessert, try ice cream at Widow’s Walk Ice Creamery located across from Ashland Park.

Jeffersonville

On our final day, we make our way to Jeffersonville, where small-town charm meets modern sophistication. Our first stop is Big Four Station Park, a picturesque urban oasis. Take a leisurely stroll across the historic Big Four Bridge, once a vital railroad link between Kentucky and Indiana, and marvel at stunning panoramic views of the riverfront and Louisville skyline.

It’s time to treat ourselves to a culinary adventure in downtown Jeffersonville. From farm-to-table eateries to trendy gastropubs, the town boasts a diverse array of dining options sure to satisfy even the most discerning palates.

The Howard Steamboat Museum, a tribute to the golden age of steamboat building along the Ohio River. Step aboard a bygone era as you explore meticulously restored steamboat models, vintage photographs, and artifacts that offer a glimpse into Jeffersonville’s rich maritime history.

Before bidding farewell to our weekend adventure, we take one last stroll through Jeffersonville’s historic district, where beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture and quaint cobblestone streets beckon with tales of days gone by.

As our road trip comes to an end, we reflect on the memories made and the treasures discovered in the charming towns of New Albany, Clarksville, and Jeffersonville.
