Happy Anniversary to us! The staff at BarnettPRO is celebrating our 20th year of the Extended Weekend Getaways Magazine (a.k.a The Weekender). Along the way, we have expanded coverage many times, going from a local newspaper tab inserted in weekly newspapers to it’s own entity as a glossy fullcolor print magazine. What used to cover upcoming weekend events in a small area of Northcentral Ohio now covers places to go, things to do, and people to see across the United States for the fun side of life. Because we extended our coverage, we added that word to our name, Weekender Extended. That worked for several years until internet search engine optimization came into play. During the months sitting in the office because of COVID, we took the down time to analyze what and how we could make this publication even better.

After repeated meetings at the round table, surveys, search engine training, and analyzing all suggestions, we rebranded to Extended Weekend Getaways. New interest shot through the roof, doubling traffic on our website. Articles didn’t necessarily change. Our dedicated staff didn’t change. But something just clicked for us and readers are now finding us through the Google search engine. It was worth the time and work investment.

Thank you, staff, readers, and subscribers for helping us grow! And we aren’t even close to being done yet.

So again, we are excited to announce our new section addition, We’re “Going Global” So let’s go, see, and do.

Tatshenshini-Alsek River Expedition

The area where the boundaries of Alaska, British Columbia and the Yukon converge is the largest protected wilderness on the planet featuring the St. Elias Mountains, massive glaciers and ice fields.

The trip begins on a plateau in the Yukon on a small creek that doubles in size every day, eventually emptying out in the Pacific Ocean. Early in the trip are Class III rapids that give way to smoother water.

Sights include grizzlies, ravens and eagles. Glaciers descend to the water’s edge, shearing off into calving icebergs.

South Africa’s Nelson Rolihlah Legacy Trail

Gordon Nelson Mandela, widely referred to by a tribal honorific, Madiba, left us with a legacy of the values with Madiba’s Journey app, an outstanding tool that includes maps, narratives, practical information and features 27 sites that are related to Mandela. Sites and activities are offered across the country, are accessible and clearly marked and give travelers an opportunity to learn more about the Republic of South Africa and how he impacted the country.

Included are the individuals who mentored and influenced Madiba, beginning with his parents, on his journey. www.nelsonmandela.org South Africa is bordered by two oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian, and has 1,836-miles of coastline.

There are eight UNESCO sites, one of which is considered the “Cradle of Humankind”, a Hominid fossil site with artifacts that date back 3-million years. The “Out of Africa” theory is based on findings in the Sterkfontein Caves and more than 10 other sites exhibiting numerous bones. www.thecradleofmankind.net It is the largest producer of chrome, platinum and vanadium, has the world’s second largest reserve of uranium and mines every mineral except oil. The Kimberley Mine alone has produced 14.5 million carats of diamonds. Because of the country’s abundance, European settlers honed in on what they felt was free land for the taking, eventually marginalizing the native Africans (Bantus) and establishing a system of segregation in 1910 that led to the founding of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1912.

The system was legalized as apartheid in 1950 and the Group Areas Act demanded that nearly 2-million Africans be removed from cities and made to live in poverty in white controlled townships. It is into this country of vast, unequal, wealth and potential that Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918.

Johannesburg is filled with locations, monuments and memorials connected with the struggle and offers the best opportunity to gain an overview of Madiba’s journey, the country’s history and the people and cultures involved.

The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 to provide a comprehensive overview of apartheid. Exhibitions guide visitors from the origins of apartheid through the reconciliation process. Outdoor exhibits feature SA’s ancient history. Chronologic galleries interpret the story in films, photographs, artifacts and dioramas. www.apartheidmuseum.org The South Western Townships (Soweto), the most recognized of the townships, was first settled in 1891. In 1948 the government began forcing black Africans out of Johannesburg and into Soweto, situated on polluted land. There were no public services and houses could not exceed 4 rooms of equal size. Streetlights were not installed until 2010 in the township of !.5-million inhabitants. It was a site of protest and rebellion. Lebo’s Soweto Tours offers guided, narrated tours of Soweto’s famous sites by foot, bike or Tuk Tuk. The complex features the Constitutional Court, Old Fort, Women’s Jail and Number Four. White prisoners were held in the Old Fort and in 1902 Numbers Four and Five were built to house black prisoners.

Walter Sisulu, Gandhi, and Nelson and Winnie Mandela were held here in inhuman conditions. Tours of the prison are conducted by former prisoners and include Gandhi and Madiba’s cells, vivid interpretations of prison life and the isolation cells. Do not miss this tour. www.constitutionhill.org.za Mandela opened the Constitutional Court in 1995 on Constitution Hill. The location was selected to represent the new South Africa linking this place of oppression with the new order. The architectural and design elements enhance the story of South Africa. That year the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication was the site of a gathering to adopt the Freedom Charter that was used as a template for the modern constitution. Ten columns symbolize the charter’s clauses.

The 2002 Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial is dedicated to thirteen-year old Pieterson who was killed in the 1976 Student Uprising. A photograph of the dying Pieterson, displayed at the site, being car-

ried by another student gained the world’s attention and galvanized the movement.

Regina Mundi is Soweto’s largest catholic church.

It provided sanctuary for students in the 1976 protest. Police officers fired on the 4,000 students inside and a tour reveals bullet holes, a black Madonna and stained-glass windows that depict the story. Police shot off one hand of a Christ sculpture and the congregants removed the other hand because they are now “the Hands of Christ.” Michele Obama visited in 2011. www.reginamundichurch. co.za Keyes Art Mile is representative of the country’s emerging art scene. The area is a perfect blend of art, architecture and upscale retail. www. keyesartmile.co.za Durban looms large in the history of South Africa in general and the Zulu in particular. On December 24, 1497 Vasco da Gama sailed into Durban’s bay and named the area “Terra do Natal”, the land of Christmas, the next day. In 1824 the British made contact with Shaka, King of the Zulu. Shaka remains so fabled that elements of Black Panther were taken from his legend. In 1835 the area was named after Governor Benjamin D’Urban. Shaka granted permission for the British to build a trading station and Durban remains the country’s largest

port and the second biggest city. www.durban.gov. za The Inanda Heritage Route interprets the story of

the Inanda Valley just outside of Durban. Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement, his 100-acre farm and home is now a museum. The nearby Ohlange Institute was founded by John Dube and modelled on Tuskegee Institute. Dube also founded the ANC and was greatly admired by Madiba. After casting his first vote in 1994 in the school’s chapel Mandela visited Dube’s grave and reportedly said, “Mr. President, I have come to report to you that South Africa is free today.” #visitdurban The Nelson Mandela Capture Site is where he was captured in August 1962. Mandela, disguised as a chauffeur, was apprehended, after a 17-month police pursuit, on this road between Durban and Johannesburg. He stepped out of the car and onto the broader stage of history. A museum exhibits compelling photographs and many rare family pictures. A superb sculpture, 31-ft. high and 99-ft. wide is comprised of fifty steel columns that when viewed at a certain angle depict a 2-dimensional image of Madiba. The emerging picture represents his disappearance and reemergence 27- years later. The sculpture is accessed via a twisting path lined with wayside markers that relate benchmarks in his journey.

Port Elizabeth, part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, was founded in 1820 as a buffer between the Xhosa and the Cape Colony. The city was named in memory of the wife of Sir Rufane Donkin. In 1965 enforced -10- | EXTENDEDWEEKENDGETAWAYS.COM ~ August, 2022

removals of non-whites began and townships were created. The Donkin Heritage Trail links 51 historic locations and interprets the history of the city. The trail begins at The Campanile, a 176-ft., 204-step, tower with 360-degree views. www.nmbt.co.za Route 67 is an arts and cultural route that features 67 public art works representing Madiba’s 67-year journey to free South Africa. The route begins at the Campanile Monument and ends at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum. The route’s premiere artwork is the 125-ft. long Voting Line Sculpture depicting his first vote at the age of 72. The laser-cut figures represent children and people from all walks of life. www. route67tours.co.za Cape Town, known as “The Mother City”, was established to resupply the Dutch East India Company.

In 1795 the British seized the town and in 1814 the British took total control and in 1910 it became the legislative capital of the Union of South Africa.

After apartheid was legislated many of the anti-apartheid leaders were incarcerated in the prison on Robben Island.

Table Mountain has been inhabited for more than 30,000-years and was sacred to the Khoi and San people. The first European to sight it was Bartolomeu Dias in 1448. In 1929 a cable car was installed so that visitors could ride to the top at 3563ft. above sea level and no trip is complete without a visit and a view. www.tablemountainnationalpark.

org Robben Island, a World Heritage Site, was the scene of Madiba’s incarceration for 18-years. He and other activist prisoners turned their imprisonment into an opportunity to educate and to learn.

Visits begin with a boat ride to the island followed by a narrated bus ride to significant sites. Your guide for the walking prison tour is a former prisoner who takes questions and escorts you to Mandela’s cell. Other important areas are the limestone quarry where prisoners worked and the garden in which Mandela hid the manuscript he later had smuggled out. www.robben-island.org.za The perfect place to end our path through Madiba’s Journey is in Nobel Square on the waterfront. There sculptures of Desmond Tutu, Nkosi Albert Luthuli,

arrayed in the square for contemplation and photo ops. These are people who worked to become the change they wanted to see. #VisitSouthAfrica .

statement like this causes most readers to think about sports. In my case, academics come to mind. As far back as elementary school, I can remember trying to excel in my school work. It was great to get a good grade, but even better to get a score which was higher than my rival. From somewhere during fourth grade all the way through until high school graduation, he was there, excelling at everything.

Or so I thought. When the class rankings were posted at graduation, he wasn’t valedictorian. It wasn’t even close. He got bumped down the list, by a girl!

In retrospect, I realized somewhere along that journey how little his success mattered to how well I was succeeding in my efforts. For one thing, we weren’t always in the same classes anymore and he spent more time playing sports. That’s when I realized how often I enjoyed participating in games and activities simply for the fun of doing it, rather than for winning.

Recently, I was asked to be a judge for a cooking contest. Yes, the winners were all smiles, but the losers were the ones who gained something from the process. They asked good questions, listened to suggestions, developed perseverance and learned how to adapt and improve.

In the long run, their take away value was worth more than the bragging rights enjoyed by the first-place team.

Culinary competitions aren’t generally considered to be sports. I can only guess the reason: no one has taken the time to think about the physical coordination, skill and endurance

needed to participate. For example, one must have the proper mindset, for without it the food item just won’t taste as good. For cooking, mental focus is required to make sure each step is completed correctly.

Next, let’s consider muscle tone and strength: try kneading bread and you’ll understand what I mean. Imagine the stretching required to reach something which has been tucked into the back of the bottom cabinet. Balance is a big plus, especially when climbing up to that top shelf or cabinet to retrieve a specific pan, dish or utensil. Even with abundant timers and buzzers, having that inner timing is especially important when baking.

Springfield (which One?) If you’ve traveled through the United States, then you know there are some towns in various locations that have the same name. Springfield is one of those names. According to a geological survey, in the continental United States, there are 33 populated towns with the names throughout 25 different states, with five in Wisconsin alone. And that’s not including the townships.

If we’re taking into consideration the townships, then there are 36 throughout the country, 11 located in Ohio. If you’re planning a road trip anytime soon and want to visit the Springfield of America, the map below is the best route to travel.

Among the various cities, the

one in Massechusetts was the very first Springfield settled in the United States. It was founded in 1636 as Agawam Plantation, named after a nearby village of Algonkian-speaking Native Americans. It’s name was changed four years later, according to wikipedia.

One trail is actually named “The Springfield Trail” for locations withing Smedley Park in Springfield, PA near Philadelphia. In 1964, a small group organized as the Springfield Trail Club with a goal of connecting hikers to explore local, regional and international trails together

and inspiring people to embrace the outdoors. It appears that the idea may have blossomed in 1967 and in 1969, the club blazed the Springfield Trail.

Its course has changed a little over the years, due to erosion, fallen trees and progressive trail routing practices, but efforts have been taken to protect the vision of the club and maintain the trail as it was originally blazed.

With over 322 million acres of public lands, 46,600 miles of shoreline, and more miles of urban and wilderness trails than we can even begin to count, Alaska is truly a wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. We have vast landscapes and endless recreation opportunities, and it might feel intimidating to explore on your own. The good news? There’s an endless array of DIY Alaska adventures that are perfect for independent travelers who prefer to go at their own pace. Read on to learn about the best self-guided hiking, biking, and paddling trips in Alaska.

From paved urban nature trails to multi-day through-hikes in the mountains, Alaska has a trail for everyone. If you’re renting a car or RV you’ll be able to access an endless array of hiking trails along the road system. However, you don’t need a car to hit the trail. Many communities have trailheads within walking distance - and just because a trail is close to town doesn’t mean it’s an “urban” trail.

Dramatic scenery, solitude, and wildlife viewing opportunities can be found on trails just minutes (and sometimes even within!) town. Wherever you go, one of the best places to start is the local Visitors Center to get hiking recommendations and maps.

Cruise ship and independent travelers alike will find plenty of hiking opportunities right from town in port communities along the Inside Passage. In Juneau, the Mount Roberts Trailhead is less than a 20-minute walk from downtown and ascends through the boreal forest to connect to the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway for beautiful views of Lynn Canal. The Perseverance Trail is also walkable from downtown and climbs gently through a valley for views of mining ruins, a waterfall, and access to other trails.

To combine hiking with Alaska Native culture in Sitka, explore the trails of Sitka National Historical Park and walk among Tlingit and Haida totem poles nestled among giant Sitka spruce trees. A popular spot for wildlife viewing and walking in Fairbanks is Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge. Several miles of trails and viewing platforms wander among peaceful forests and wetlands.

Winter or summer, road or trail, skinny tire or fat tire, human-powered or electric-powered – you’ll find lots of options for exploring Alaska by bike.

Nearly every major community or town in Alaska offers some sort of bike rental option, whether it’s a fat bike for cruising over snowy trails, a mountain bike to explore some singletrack, or an e-bike for a little extra oomph to cover the miles. Bike rental outfitters are more than happy to provide recommendations for the best trails to explore based on your experience and type of bike – many with trails leaving within minutes of their buildings.

Looking to put a little power in your pedal? E-bike rentals are popping up all over the state to help you go the distance. In addition to cruiser e-bikes which are best for paved trails, many outfitters rent mountain e-bikes and fat tire e-bikes for dirt and winter trails. You’ll find e-bike rentals – along with conventional bike rentals – throughout the state, including Fairbanks, Denali, Juneau, Skagway, Haines, Sitka, Gustavus, Seward, Valdez, Anchorage, Girdwood, and Talkeetna.

hen you think of Arizona, it’s hard to imagine that the climate would be conducive to growing grapes. However, the Verde Valley in Central Arizona, one of three wine-growing regions in the state, has the altitude and latitude that is perfect for thriving vineyards. Look at a world map, and you’ll see that Arizona is near the same latitude as Spain and Sicily.

Cottonwood, in the basin of the Verde River, is the epicenter of the Arizona Wine Country and the heart of the Wine Trail. It’s 3,300 feet above sea level and is surrounded by mountains that climb to 8,000 feet in elevation. The valley is below the cold of Arizona’s high country and above the heat of the desert. Nearly 80% of the land is National Forest.

When I visited the Verde Valley, I stayed in historic Old Town Cottonwood at the Iron Horse Inn. The comfortable accommodations with contemporary upgrades are within a short stroll from restaurants and wine tasting rooms.

While in town, I enjoyed an excellent dinner of farm-to-table salad and made-from-scratch inhouse pasta at Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room and Osteria. The vines-to-glass wine tasting flight was the perfect accompaniment.

In the 1970s, viticulture began to flourish in Arizona when Professor Gordon Dutt came to the University of Arizona from the University of California Davis, California’s top wine school. A soil scientist and not a winemaker, he concluded that Arizona’s soils would be ideal for growing wine grapes.

Arizona Wine Country Present Day

History of Verde Valley Wine The Verde Valley in Yavapai County is often compared to the renowned winemaking regions in Greece, Italy, France, and Spain.

Spanish missionaries began winemaking in Arizona in the 1700s. Nine missions were established in the 1600s in Southern Arizona and New Mexico, where the grapes flourished. Production exceeded California’s output well into the 20th century.

Wine production and consumption halted during Prohibition, from 1920 to 1933. Even scien-

In 2010, there were seven vineyards in the Verde Valley. Today, there are about 100 with national recognition for Arizona wines.

Many Gold Medals and other awards bring attention to Arizona’s three established principle growing regions. The Federal Government awards AVA status (American Viticultural Area) for distinguished wine grape growing regions. In Arizona, they are Sonoita, Willcox, and Verde Valley.

unusual. The farm is organic; they don’t till the native grasses; they work on river restoration; the grapes are hand-harvested, and they are Dark Sky compliant.

Known for its small-batch wines, Page Springs Cellars is proud to offer 60 or more labels each year.

Producing 100 cases or smaller means there is always something new.

Page Springs Cellars hosts events every year for Wine Club members and offer tours, private events, yoga & massage, and tastings in their tasting room and bistro.

Pro Tip: Avoid visiting on the weekend because you may have to wait over two hours to get in.

When I was there, the farm hands loaded large bins of freshly picked grapes on forklifts. Luke Bernard, the Director of Sales and Marketing, graciously gave me a tour of the production barn.

As he described the process, he cautioned me not to stick my head too far into the bin because of the CO2 emissions from the already fermenting grapes.

Chateau Tumbleweed

From cellar rat to winemaker, Kris Pothier shared her wine journey with me that began in 2004.

She and her husband, Joe Bechard, relocated to Arizona and began working at Page Springs when it

opened.

Kris and Joe worked as cellar rats, assisting, cleaning, doing the numbers, and doing punch downs during harvest. They helped rack the wine, prepare the wines for bottling, bottled the wine, and moved the liquids from various places. As their careers progressed, Joe became a winemaker, and Kris assisted with the punch downs.

Joe and Kris teamed up with their friends, Kim Koistinen, the winery controller, and Jeff Hendricks, the vineyard manager at Page Springs Cellars. They brought complementary skills to the business. With the help of their mentor, Maynard James Keenan (owner of Caduceus and Merkin), they opened a wine coop, where they started producing their label, along with making wine for other wineries in the area.

Chateau Tumbleweed was born in the abandoned Clarkdale school bus barn used in the 80s. The wine production room, an immaculate space, contained

floor-to-ceiling barrels and equipment and was quite impressive.

When I visited the winery, they were awaiting building materials so they could expand. Kris said, “We’re on a growth spurt right now. We have a building going up, and we bought the property next door.”

The Chateau Tumbleweed label art is creative, kitschy, and fun.

There’s no mistaking the company’s brand.

Pro Tip: Punch downs are performed on fermenting red grapes. The grape skins and berries at the top are pushed into the juice at the bottom to extract color.

Heat is released during this conversion phase. Punch downs occur three times a day for every bin of fruit.

Yavapai College – Southwest Wine Center

Grapes play a significant role in the regional economy. At Yavapai College, the wine industry is a powerful workforce and economic development influence. As of last fall, 110 students were enrolled in the Viticulture and Enology programs–the most ever.

Started in 2010 with one acre from Merkin Vineyards, the Southwest Wine Center now farms 13 acres obtained from donors and the industry.

The winery program opened in 2014. Students enroll in a one or two-year program that takes them through the growing cycle of grapes in the vineyard adjoining the building on campus.

I visited the Southwest Wine Center during their 10th harvest.

Michael Pierce, the Viticulture & Enology Director, guided me through the facility, demonstrated the equipment, and explained how the wine tasting room and

sales support the college program.

“Our wines are clean, friendly, vibrant, and positive,” Michael said. The grapes are processed in steel, wood, and concrete barrels.

SWC produces about 1,000 cases per year.

The sophisticated and elegant wine tasting room was the first stop on my tour. Built on the college racquetball court, the Center boasts a stunning view of the Verde Valley, Mingus Mountain, and the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. The patio was my last stop to enjoy the vineyard and memorable panorama.

Michael began winemaking in college as a hobby. After graduation, he continued his studies in viticulture and enology. He took harvesting jobs following the opportunities in New Zealand, Tasmania, and Oregon. Then, his parents bought land in Willcox, Arizona, that they renovated and expanded to 27 acres of vineyard.

Michael is the winemaker, and the family produces two wine labels, Saeculum Cellars, and Bodega Pierce.

How To Get There The Verde Valley is in the geographical center of Arizona, about 100 miles north of Phoenix on Interstate 17. From the east or west, take Interstate 40, connect with Interstate 17 near Flagstaff, and go south for 64 miles.

Final Thoughts The Arizona Wine Trail is a close-knit group of grape growers and winemakers. While this trail is a youngster in relative terms, it’s one worth watching as they continue to produce award-winning wines.

Why would I drive 450 miles from Palm Springs to explore Concord, California? The answer is I have never been there.

So let’s see what we can uncover about this town 46 miles from Napa Valley and 32 miles from San Francisco. It’s an easy drive, or you can take Bart there. Am I glad I took the journey? Absolutely.

one of the more famous local bakeries, Alpine Pastry, I found a bench and observed the scene before me. Children screamed with delight as they played on the jungle gym playground while parents sat under one of the trees providing shade from the intense Concord sun.

It was time to plan my day, so I pulled out the Concord walking map tour of historic places.

I immediately wished my granddaughter was along so we could find the places together as we explored. Since I was alone, I went to a few locations out of the 28 delineated. I found the architecture of the Bibber House, built in 1912, to be exquisite Victorian style. Owned by two generations, it is now a non-profit, and the wood paneling and majestic staircase make anyone feel special as they walk through the door.

Exploring Shopping

One would not often spend much time talking about a shopping center and mall, but I can’t help myself. Adjacent to an older mall, The Willows, designers devised a plan that embraces retail and a special events area, making The Veranda accessible and appealing to all family members. This reimagined mix-use mall is worth a stop.

Wander the grounds, sit by the pond’s cooling air, and let the fountains mesmerize you as you eat gelato from a nearby ice cream shop.

Children can wear off their extra energy on the playground near the event venue. Still warm?

Dining Opportunities Abound

Concord is a highly diverse community, and its dining cuisine reflects this diversity. I have already established there are a plethora of Mexican restaurants. Still, Italian cuisine takes center stage at the Doppio Zero, located in The Veranda. With an expansive patio and comfortable dining chairs under dark blue umbrellas, it is the perfect place to slow down, relax, listen to the soft music vibes in the distance and sip some bubbly.

My review of my entree, oh my! Opting for lasagna since any cook will attest it takes a lot of effort to make in our kitchens. There

was no need for a doggie bag, and as I think about it, I wish I could have this savory, bursting-with-flavor meal again.

Years ago, Cinnaholic was featured on Shark Tank. While a proposed deal fell through, the owners have made their gourmet cinnamon rolls a franchise with small storefronts across the nation. What makes them unique? They are 100% vegan and have over 20 different frostings. When you walk in, you select your frosting and a decadent topping.

I ordered one topped with regular cinnamon roll frosting and added a white peach topping.

Since I am not a vegetarian, I was a bit hesitant, but after the first bite, I had no reason even to question the wisdom of such a delectable pastry.

While the Bay Leaf has your regular breakfast fare, the ambiance makes it worthy of a breakfast stop. An early morning breakfast found me seated on a patio surrounded by a lush landscape along a tree-lined street and chirping birds. A couple sitting nearby chattered about how much there was to see and do in the area. From what I experienced, I couldn’t agree more.

The Arts are Flourishing

Recognizing artists and art’s role in everyday life, Visit Concord came up with the slogan “Creative Concord.” It launched a month-long calendar filled with creative ways to showcase the arts throughout the community. Nine largescale murals were commissioned to grace blank city building walls. Many of them are now completed, so keep your eyes open as you journey throughout this community.

As I mentioned earlier, Todos Santos Plaza is a community gathering place. Concerts are held regularly there, and my sense is Concord is the place to visit if you want to hear good jazz music. Recently Head West Market Place, think Etsy in person, brought artists together,

enabling them to showcase their products to residents and visitors in this beautiful space.

Check the Concord Pavilion’s schedule. This 12,500-seat amphitheater, designed by Frank Gehry, is one of the largest venues in Northern California. Frankly, I cannot think of a better way to end a day of exploring, sitting out under the dark, starfilled sky, surrounded by rolling hills dotted with oak trees, and listening to someone like Dirks Bentley or the Backstreet Boys, both of whom are scheduled this summer.

With time getting short, I was already regretting I did not have more time to spend in the area. I decided to head out to check out some of the surrounding wineries. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered a number of the wineries were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. However, I have no regrets searching them out, for the beauty of the area seemed to unfold around every bend I made in the winding roads. There are more than enough wineries for wine enthusiasts to spend five days exploring the area.

I am back home in Palm Springs, and residents have taken notice of my social media posts. They are asking me lots of questions. It is obvious I have aroused interest in this community that so many have previously passed by on their way to other places. Now armed with the knowledge I have gained about Concord, I do plan to go back. Not only do I have more things to see there, but my sense is also this thriving community will have even more things to explore by the time I return.to be a wonderful reprieve from the outside world.

Travel The Historic Hot springs are rich in elements and minerals with scientifically proven therapeutic benefits. Twelve years ago, my family visited Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and enjoyed the hot springs. We returned four years ago and fell even more in love with the hot springs. When discussing a family vacation this year, we all thought it might be fun to revisit the hot springs.

I started researching and learned about the Historic Hot Spring Loop in Colorado.

I thought, “Wouldn’t it be fun to do part of the loop and visit multiple hot springs?” I contacted the folks at the Historic Hot Springs Loop, and they gave me the contact information for several of the hot springs on the loop. We planned a trip to visit six of the eleven towns on the loop. Those six towns were home to ten different hot springs and a vapor cave. Various destinations and CVBs hosted us. All opinions are my own.

Pagosa Springs

We live in Pennsylvania and flew to Denver to start our trip.

From Denver, we rented a car and drove to Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The Mother Spring in Pagosa Springs is the world’s deepest geothermal hot spring. It provides the water to all three spas offering hot spring soaks in the town.

We stayed at The Springs Resort in Pagosa Springs. We arrived around 2 AM, and once we checked in, we hit the springs.

Guests at The Springs Resort have access to the hot springs 24 hours per day. They also provide day passes to those staying off property. The day passes provide access from 9 AM till 9:30 PM when they go around clearing the pools of non-guests.

The Springs Resort has a large cool swimming pool, 25 hot spring pools with five for adults only, and river access to guests. The therapeutic water hot spring pools offer a range of temperatures and sizes, with a pool to suit every person.

The resort provides enrichment to guests with daily wellness activities like Aqua Yoga and Forest Bathing Hikes. I enjoyed Aqua Yoga, and my husband joined me for an Aqua Sound Bath. My son and his girlfriend enjoyed a yoga class.

The resort also offers spa services. I was treated to a Magnesium Muscle Melt at the spa.

Two other spas offer soaks in the same mineral waters. The Overlook Mineral Springs Spa is a short walk from The Resort on the town’s main street. It is adult only and provides soak tubs both indoors and outdoors. Some are for a private soak for a single person or tubs that multiple people can enjoy.

Healing Waters Resort and Spa is the third spa in town, offering a swimming pool and soaks in the same mineral water used at the other spas.

c Hot Springs Loop

and known as the “Switzerland of America,” Ouray is home to the historic Ouray Hot Springs.

Nestled into a valley surrounded by mountain peaks with snow on top, the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and Fitness Center is home to five pools; three are geothermally heated.

Temperatures range from 75 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit in the pools. It is a family-friendly facility with waterslides and eight lap lanes in cool water, a climbing wall, and other activities, as well as an adults-only area for those wishing to soak and relax.

Durango

Our next stop on the Loop was the town of Durango. There is one hot spring about 15 minutes from town. The Durango Hot Springs Resort and Spa was recently redesigned and is still expanding. Sitting back against the forest with mountain views, the thermal waters are infused with nano-meter and micro-meter oxygen bubbles to increase the health benefits and purity of the waters. Nature lovers will enjoy the natural setting.

The Durango Hot Springs includes a large resort-style family swimming pool and several family hot spring soaking pools. There is a splash area where a large mining bucket fills with water and dumps on those standing under the bucket. A large lawn separates the family area and the adult-only pools. Eight private Japanese-inspired cedar soaking tubs, a reflexology walking path, and sixteen natural mineral hot springs are available for 26 unique thermal mineral water features. Reservations are required.

Carbondale

The fourth stop was in the town of Carbondale.

The Avalanche Ranch hot springs are about 11 miles from Carbondale.

The Avalanche Ranch Hot Springs are designed around the Crystal River Valley’s natural landscape and rock formations. It features three natural hot springs pools in a tiered layout.

Cascading down from one to the next, each hot spring pool is a bit cooler. The largest pool is fed by a waterfall in front of a rock grotto.

The three Colorado hot springs on the property provide 24-hour availability to cabin guests and limited paid public access. Reservations are required.

Ouray

Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs is the town that got us hooked on hot springs. It was our fifth stop and boasts two different Hot Spring Experiences, plus Vapor Caves that use the hot springs to heat the caves.

Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is the world’s largest mineral hot spring pool. The size of a football field and the temperature is in the mid-90s. Lap lanes and a diving area in the pool’s deep end are available.

There is also a large soaking pool with temperatures of 104 degrees F. This is an excellent destination for families because there is much to do for all ages. The Sopris Splash Zone includes a splash pad, a pool for children, and two children’s water slides. Teens, tweens, and adults will enjoy the Shoshone Chutes, a tube ride that resembles white water rafting.

Iron Mountain Hot Springs has 25 soaking pools ranging from 98 to 108 degrees tucked into the Colorado River bank. You can relax, restore and rejuvenate in these pools in the quiet zone as you listen to soft music and view the surrounding mountains and river. bottom to enjoy reflexology as you soak.

They currently have an Experimental Pool where they match the chemical composition of the water to a hot spring elsewhere in the world. The spring they matched when we visited was the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. It was a fun experience.

There is also a Family Pool with fresh water that is approximately 93 degrees with a jetted spa nearby.

The Iron Mountain Hot Springs requires reservations and is currently offering three-hour time slots for soaking.

A vast expansion is underway and will add additional adult-only soaking pools, plus ten more Experimental Pools.

The Yampah Vapor Spa & Vapor Caves were a unique experience we had never tried before.

You descend 22 stairs into a cave area with several rooms, each at a slightly different temperature.

These are the only known natural vapor caves in North America.

While we were there, we also enjoyed a Mineral Bath. The hot spring bubbles through the cave at 125 degrees, creating geothermal steam. The moist heat makes you sweat out the impurities in your system to purify both body and mind.

Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs was our sixth town on the Historic Hot Spring Loop.

Our ninth hot spring was about 20 minutes from Steamboat. It requires you to travel several miles on a dirt road, but it is worth it. Strawberry Park Hot Springs is nestled in the forest among the mountains.

It is a very natural setting with nature and chipmunks everywhere.

There are numerous pools at varying temperatures.

You can see where the hot spring bubbles out of the ground on the hill and runs down into the pools mixing with river water, creating the soaking pools.

Reservations are required for day visitors. You can also make reservations to stay on the premises and receive access to the soaking pools from opening to closing.

The tenth hot spring we visited was the Old Town Hot Springs in downtown Steamboat Springs. Other Towns On The Loop

There are several other towns on the loop that we could not visit and will hopefully have the opportunity to see in the future.

They are located in Chaffee and Saguache Counties.

Lewis and Clark

The Lewis & Clark Bicycle Trail was created to celebrate the anniversary of the Corps of Discovery’s 1804-1806 historic journey and offers cyclists the opportunity to follow the path of the intrepid explorers Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It includes seven map sections detailing the 1804-1805 westbound trip, roughly following the Missouri and Columbia rivers, and one map section showing Clark’s 1806 eastbound return along the Yellowstone River in Montana.

The main route of the Lewis & Clark Bicycle Trail is made up of paved roads, bike paths, and unpaved rail-trails, with occasional short sections of gravel roads.

Conditions vary from rural to urban.

Lewis and Clark’s expedition traveled more often by boat via rivers than by land and this route follows the rivers as closely as possible. Occasional rough roads, narrow to nonexistent shoulders, and sparse services make this one of our more challenging routes.

Keeping this in mind, we recommend that you equip yourself with a wide-tired touring bicycle.

Also, you’ll want to include a water filter on your packing list, as many of the campgrounds available are primitive and do not have potable water sources. If you use motels, plan ahead and be ready to ride some long days, perhaps

as much as 100 miles. Distances between services in some areas can be substantial, so prior planning of your daily mileage is important.

The route begins at the impressive Lewis and Clark State Memorial Park visitor center outside Hartford, Illinois. The center is near the mouth of the Wood River, on the opposite side of the Mississippi from where the Missouri feeds into it. It was at the mouth of the Wood where the members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of late 1803 and early 1804, making final preparations for a spring departure up the Missouri.

Initially in Montana — especially if you are bucking headwinds — the riding might be characterized as “put your head down and grin and bear it” conditions.

You won’t actually lay eyes on the Missouri River for some 350 miles. But that is not to say that you will not experience some the most spectacular mountain-andplains vistas in North America.

At Circle, after turning west onto State Highway 200, the wind will be a concern; it can affect your steering and make it hard, or even impossible, to hear cars approaching from the rear. A rearview mirror, always a good idea, is strongly suggested in windy areas such as these. If you want to go there, the 60.7-mile Fort Peck Spur takes you to the town of Fort

been up to this point. At Three Forks, where the Gallatin, Madison, and Jefferson rivers merge, you’ll leave the Missouri River behind for good. Three miles south of Dillon, you will again be faced with choosing between two options, both of which include crossing the Continental Divide.

Staying on Lewis and Clark’s 1804 westbound route takes you over Lemhi Pass, which includes 24.5 miles of gravel while the 87.2-mile paved Big Hole Option represents Clark’s 1806 eastbound journey.

The Big Hole Option passes the Big Hole National Battlefield and

Visitor Center that tells the tale of the Nez Perce and their flight to freedom. On this option, you will also encounter Clark’s 1806 eastbound route over Gibbon’s Pass.

The Bitterroot Valley, in western Montana, has become heavily populated in recent years. Traffic increases dramatically as you follow secondary roads and a separated bike path that parallels U.S. Highway 93. At Traveler’s Rest — a.k.a. the town of Lolo — the route heads north into Missoula.

Although the site of Missoula was not encountered by Lewis and Clark during the expedition’s westbound travels, on the return trip east, the nine-man contingent led by Capt. Stay in the Loop Oregon’s Fruit Loop

Pies, berry picking, and wineries. Who can resist a trail called the Fruit Loop? Nestled in the fertile Hood River Valley in Oregon, the Fruit Loop trail offers the chance to eat, drink, and soak in nature’s beauty. The 35-mile, self-paced driving trail has a little bit of everything--road-side farm stands, wineries, breweries, cideries, and flower fields. Winding past the serene countryside dotted with orchards and vineyards, you can spend the day. Or, maybe spend several nights to bike, hike, and even indulge in a slice of homemade pie back at the inn.

When to visit?

No one visit to the Fruit Loop is the same.

Scenery, sips, and fresh offerings change with the seasons. In spring, fruit blossoms and wildflowers will pave the way. Most agree, however, the prime time to savor the Fruit Loop is summer through early fall. Berries are plump, juicy and ready for picking. Heavy peaches waiting to be snatched hang from branches. U-pick orchards are in full swing, and outside dining at vineyards offers snow-capped, mountain views.

Apple Valley Country Store, stop #22, will satisfy all sweet tooth cravings. In August, huckleberry milkshakes are sweet and cold. Perfectly packaged apple dumplings bubbling over with caramel and artful hand pies are comforts to eat on the spot or savor later. Jams, jellies, and sauces with endless fruity combinations can bring vivid memories of the Fruit Loop trail long after the visit.

How much time to allow for the entire Fruit Loop?

The Gorge White House, a fruit stand and winery, is the second stop on the Fruit Loop. Amelia Teyner, a native Midwesterner who lived in Oregon with her husband, Louie, agrees summer is ideal. “The views of snow-covered Mount Hood at The Gorge Whitehouse are especially spectacular,” Teyner says. “In summer, they have a food truck with farm-fresh inspired foods where you can sit on picnic tables to enjoy lunch or dinner, and sip on wines and ciders.”

In August, orchards with peaches and pears are plentiful. Even into October, a rainbow of blueberries, pears, apples, and yes, pumpkins are available. Fall marks the time of farm festivals and harvests celebrations, ciders and cooler temps.

Draper Girls’ Country Farm at stop 14 is as satisfying as it is stylish. Stocked with antiques, fruits, grass-fed meats, flowers, and food gifts–the farm promises a cherished souvenir or a savory addition to your next meal. The Draper Girls’ petting farm, gardens, farms stand produce, and more, are worth the stop. One more stop down, The Draper Girls’ Cider Company at stop 15, is probably what the Draper Girls are known for best. Award-winning hard ciders are fresh-squeezed into decorative growlers to take home.

The Fruit Loop is only 35-miles on Highway 35 and can be done in 4-5 hours. While it’s possible to just choose a few stops, reconsider. With 27 stops total, it’s best to stay a few days. Besides vineyards and novel shopping, the Fruit Loop trail winds past some of the most postcard-worthy spots imaginable.

Just stepping out over the Columbia River Gorge area where fog brushes the green mountains and the wide, deep blue Hood River calms below—time stands still here.

If possible, plan to stay overnight or longer. Accommodations are as diverse as the fruits for the picking. For a resort experience, Best Western Plus Hood River Inn has a swimming pool with views of Hood River, indoor/outdoor dining, and basic accommodations to luxury suites. More intimate choices like the Old Parkdale Inn Bed and Breakfast, circa 1910, offer a home-like feel with views of Mount Hood and local coffees and breakfast served for you. Cooper Spur Mountain Resort appeals to the adventurer with ample places for biking, hiking, and even a chair-lift ride. Adjacent to Mount Hood National Forest, the setting is made for exploring.

Hotel rooms, cabins, lodge condos, and more offer a cozy, wood-themed place to rest with rich woods.

An on-site restaurant and amenities make this a popular choice for the outdoor enthusiast looking for creature comforts. Area campgrounds are also plentiful just off the Fruit Loop trail.

Several of the earliest “studios” were located here, and since then over 500 feature films and television projects have been produced in Oregon (as well as hundreds of commercials and interactive games). Film buffs will definitely want to head to Salem with a tour of the infamous Oregon State Hospital, featured in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” based on the 1962 novel by one of Oregon’s most famous authors, Ken Kesey. It’s now a fascinating museum in its own right, the OSH Museum of Mental Health, with exhibits on medical equipment and practices, some of which were highlighted in the film.

A 215-mile long-distance hiking in Connecticut to the Maine/New The NET Hike Challenge is back for 2022! Over the last four years, almost 800 participants have completed the challenge, logging over 60,000 miles on the New England Trail! You heard that right, over 60,000 miles or points earned by you through hiking, volunteering, and exploring! Thank you for choosing the NET over and over again for your adventures.

In 2018 we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the National Trails System with our first 50-mile challenge. In 2019, we built upon this by adding an extra 100-mile challenge to highlight the 10 year anniversary of the designation of the NET. In 2020, we encouraged participants to use the NET as their close-to-home trail amidst travel restrictions. In 2021, we saw nearly 200 people complete both the Hike 50 and Hike 100 challenges!

As life returns to a (semi) normal pace, we are excited to announce the 2022 Hike Challenge!

Now more than ever, spending time outdoors has become a crucial part of staying mentally and physically healthy. Hike 50 or 100 miles (unique or repetitive) during the 2022 calendar year on the NET and submit your points to receive a special edition completion patch. Log your mileage over the year and once you complete your challenge, make sure to share your story with us!

The trail is well-marked and easy to follow. Apart from several road walks, the single track trail winds its way along traprock ridges and forested areas. However, it can be rugged in some sections with thru hikers experiencing a net gain of just over 30,000 ft. The highest elevation is Mount Grace, at 1617 ft and the lowest elevation is the Long Island Sound, 0ft.

After deciding when and where to begin and registering your thruhike, you will need to plan your resupply points and know camping regulations along the NET. Overnight camping is only allowed at designated sites along the trail. Where there is no campsite, thru-hikers are expected to leave the trail to find overnight accommodations. Allegrippis Trails 36 Miles of single track trails Designed by mountain bikers and built by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, the Allegrippis Trails at Raystown Lake is a premier single-track mountain biking trail system located in the Eastern United States.

The 24 trails in the system were designed and built to provide sustainable trails for a variety of human uses including mountain biking, hiking, trail running, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

The Allegrippis Trails are arranged as stacked loops, giving the user the opportunity to plan a route as short or as long as they would like.

There are nearly endless combinations, so even riders who come back time after time have the opportunity to use a new route each time.

Although the trails are rated “easiest”, “moderate”, and “most difficult”, they can all be safely traversed by users of all skill levels, but users should expect their normal pace to be slowed as the difficulty increases. The ratings are provided to give all users a good idea of what challenges to expect. These ratings only apply to trails in the Allegrippis Trails system, they should not be compared to other trails or their difficulties.

Get to know this 20.1-mile loop trail near Hesston, Pennsylvania. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 7 h 24 min to complete. Either beginning in Alabama or ending in Alabama, the trail map for The World’s Longest Yard Sale (WLYS) is 690 miles of shopping fun! What better way is there to combine an extended weekend getaway with finding bargains for back to school, collectible gifts or items to redecorate your home? bargains The sale runs through six states; Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama with the majority of the route following US 127. That includes the entire western side of the Buckeye State.

This year the sale will take place August 4-7. Two prime places to shop in the Greater Grand Lake Region include the neighborhood among the majestic homes that line North Main Street in Celina and at Niekamp’s Farm Market, about 7 miles south of Celina. Both locations offer multiple venders making it easy to park and stroll for bargains and treasures.

Some best WLYS tips: Wear comfortable shoes, pack plenty of water for good hydration and drive with caution along the route as cars and people are not always careful when sale sites appear along the roadway. Indian Creek Trail Check out this 4.3-mile out-and-back trail near Jasper, Arkansas. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 1 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, so you’ll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. You’ll need to leave pups at home — dogs aren’t allowed on this trail.

The road to Kyle’s Landing closes about 1.2 miles from the trailhead periodically and this will add extra mileage to your hike, including a steep finale. As this is not an official trail and it is unmaintained, it can be very dangerous. Proceed with caution. Indian Creek trail is known for the most accidents in the Buffalo River trail system. To reach the falls you must scramble through a rocky creek, at times wading through water or you must travel on the sheer edge of a high bluff, or a combination of the above. The reward is in the scenery.

The Historic Bartram Trail

Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge

William Bartram, one of America’s first naturalists to visit and write about Florida, piqued the interest of Dr. Tony Abbott at Stetson Universit. He retraced Bartram’s travels across Volusia County and created a brochure to guide visitors along Bartram’s sites. It is called Experience William Bartram’s Florida. Let’s begin at the Bartram Gardens and Trail in DeLand at the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center, a ten-acre natural area on the shores of Lake Beresford. The gardens are native plants and interpreted with signage using copies of Bartram’s original drawings. Bartram traveled from Lake George southward towards Lake Monroe on the Seminole County line.

Staying true to Bartram’s route, head for Astor and visit the Bartram Oak on Highway 40 just east of the Saint Johns River. Spalding Upper Indian Trade Store, the last European settlement

west of St. Johns was just across the river. William Bartram spent several weeks here in 1774. He describes searching for curious vegetable productions, collecting seeds, planting and growing roots in boxes.” The oak would have been a sapling at that time. So the legend grew and it became “Bartram’s Oak.”

This is where the Saint Johns River earns the name “River of Lakes. The river forms Lake Dexter, a few smaller lakes, and then Lake Woodruff. This group of lakes is where Bartram describes the anhinga, or a Snake Bird.

It’s also where he describes the multitude of alligators found here. He writes, “The alligators were in such incredible numbers, and so close together from shore to shore, that it would have been easy to have walked across on their heads, had the animals been harmless.”

The refuge was established in 1964 as a migratory bird home to more than 230 species. It is the second-largest pre-migration roosting point of swallow-tailed kites in the United States. Swallow-tailed kites are easily identified by their distinctive black split tail that forms a perfect V. These black and white birds of prey winter in Brazil and return to Florida each spring to build their nest.

There is a good chance of seeing bald eagles here. You might see deer, marsh rabbits, otters, and gopher tortoises while you hike their fifteen miles of trails.

Other wings to see are Erica Group’s Swallow-Tailed Kite Wings murals as part of the “Wings of The West.” They represent something about the location where they’ve been painted.

The interpretive center tells the history of the island and the wildlife you might see. You can camp there, stay in a primitive cabin, or rent a kayak, canoe, or bicycle to explore the island.

Egret at Hontoons Landing

There’s a good place for lunch just across from the park, Hontoon Landing Deli. Aside from a great sandwich, you might meet two sand hill cranes near the outside dining area in front or an egret perched on the rail while you dine overlooking the water.

Blue Spring State Park

DeLeon Springs State Park

There is no recird of Bartram visiting here. If he had, he would have loved the spring with a constant 72 degrees and depths ranging from 18 inches to 30 feet.

The Visitor’s Center has exhibits showing people lived here 6,000 years ago. These earliest recorded dwellers were the Mayaca. Evidence of their lifestyle was found in shell mounds they left behind.

The site was once a plantation and during the 1950-60s, a resort. The park is on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. You have a choice of the Wild Persimmon Hiking Trail, a four-mile loop, to spot deer, turkeys, wild hogs and Florida black bears, or the halfmile paved wheelchair-accessible nature trail. Had Bartram passed here he might have seen a cypress tree now more than 600 years old.

If you are on the water, you can canoe or kayak into Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Another water adventure here is the 50-minute eco/history boat tour on Spring Garden Run aboard the M/V Acuera.

A unique dining option is the Old Spanish Sugar Mill Restaurant built on the remains of a

sugar-making operation from the 1830s. Remnants of the mill, the brickwork, boiling kettles, mill machinery, and the original mill wheel hub are located behind the restaurant. The tables are each equipped with a griddle where you can make your own pancakes.

The waitress brings you pitchers of batter and your choice of addins. You just pour, flip, and enjoy.

Hontoon Island State Park

This park can only be reached by boat. Bartram described it as “A delightful little bluff consisting chiefly of shells.” It was here he sheltered as best as he could from the hurricane writing that it was “a large islet or grove of Oaks and Palms. Here I intended to seek shelter, and abide till the fury of the hurricane was overpast.”

The shells were most likely the remnants of the Timucuan settlement once here. Today, there is an Owl Totem replica. The original was recovered in 1955 and is in the Florida State Museum in Gainesville. The totem’s located between the visitor’s center and the playground/area. The Timucuan used the totems to show which clan lived in an area.

West Volusia, being such an outdoor treasure, has three state parks. Blue Spring is the most famous as a manatee area. They come into the spring beginning in November and stay for the winter months. The spring remains 72 degrees year-round, and the manatees are sensitive to the cold so this is one of their favored refuges.

While Bartram was staying at the Beresford Plantation recovering from his brush with the hurricane, Charles Bernard, the caretaker and good friend, took him to visit Blue Spring. Bartram found the spring water to have “a most disagreeable taste.” He describes the spring as “boils up with great force, forming immediately a vast circular bason, capacious enough for several shallops to ride in, and runs with rapidity into the river three or four hundred yards distance.”

Since he was here during hurricane season, he would not see any manatees. It is the largest first magnitude spring emptying about 100 million gallons of water a day into the river. In late November, we saw about ten manatees. From November 15 to March 30, the run is closed to swimming and human water fun. It is reserved

for the manatees. This past season a record breaking 583 manatees were seen.

Interestingly the manatees are named. Their genealogy is traced letting science learn so much more about their habits. One man, Wayne Hartley, has traced manatee families and named them for over four decades. I was fortunate enough to meet him on this trip as he was doing his daily manatee count.

A baby great blue heron that has not turned blue yet When you visit I highly recommend you take the Blue Spring Adventure pontoon boat tour. On the two-hour tour through the Saint Johns River, try to identify all of the birds as the guide offers educational and entertaining information about the river and the wildlife.

We saw birds of all kinds and ages. The limpkin, a well-camouflaged brown bird, sometimes called the crying bird, because of its call, lives in the shallows of the river. We learned it’s screaming call was used in the early Tarzan movies for Cheetah’s voice. We also saw plenty of alligators, turtles, giant herons, egrets, ibises, wood storks, and so many more.

Aside from the natural aspects of the park, there is the Thursby House built in 1872 by Louis

Thursby, one first European settlers, in the area although primitive people lived here for thousands of years previously. In fact, he built his home on top of one of the early middens. The location on the St. Johns River gave him a means of shipping the oranges he grew here.

The park offers camping and cabins.

Lyonia Environmental Center

Lyonia Environmental Preserve’s 360 acres are a bit inland so perhaps Bartram did not get here. That’s his loss. It is rich in wildlife and one of the few places you might see a Florida scrub jay.

These birds are on the Threatened List and live only in central Florida. They have an unusual family system where the juvenile from the last hatching hang around to offer protection as an extra set of eyes watching for predators while the next babies hatched. They need a scrub environment, which is also a developer’s favorite land type. Sandy Falcon, Center manager, led us through the preserve.

It’s an easy hike as the trails are wide and not very hilly.

Inside the center, there are a lot of interpretive exhibits and some real wildlife including some king snakes, a ball python, a pair of turtles named Tuttie and Frutti, a few fish in the turtle tank that were intended as food but survived and now share the tank, a blue-tongued skink named Igor, and more.

Outside, adjacent to the beautiful butterfly garden, you find another set of wings, the Scrub Jay Wings from the Wings of the West series.

Gemini Springs

Bartram, described Gemini Spring as “having three heads within 30 yards” and covered with “duck meat,” the term then used to describe duck weed.

It’s a 212-acre park today that pumps about 6.5 million gallons of sparkling fresh water up from the two springs each day. I spotted a large flock of Florida white ibises there browsing around the spring. Another bird, a beautiful blue heron, was grazing among what Bartram may have referred to as “duck meat.”

The park had a nice paved trail that wanders across the spring run as well as several wooded trails.

There are a campground, a dog park and lots of picnic tables.

Green Springs looks like a small emerald dropped into the forest.

John and William Bartram described it as a “pretty stream of sweet water.” It’s one of Florida’s few sulfur springs which Native Americans considered sacred and believed it had healing power.

It was once part of Baron Fredrick DeBary’s hunting estate. You can tour DeBary’s home but that’ll be another story.

Mississippi River Birding Trail Sparsely populated and heavily cultivated in cotton, corn and soybeans, the Northeast Louisiana Delta has served as one of the last homes for the ivory-billed woodpecker and Louisiana black bear. Agriculture and hardwood timbering fragmented this once-contiguous mosaic of bottomland hardwood and and cypress-tupelo swamp habitats, virtually exterminating both the woodpecker and the bear. The ivory-billed woodpecker may be lost forever, but the Louisiana black bear is making an impressive comeback, thanks to an intensive wildlife conservation program initiated by both federal and state wildlife agencies. To date, hundreds of thousands of acres of abandoned farmland in this region have been purchased and restored to their former forested glory.

The Mississippi River Birding Trail consists of 30 bird watching sites in 13 Louisiana parishes.

Red River Birding Trail Long storied throughout American history for its role in U.S. “Wild West” culture, the Red River changes character considerably as it enters Louisiana. Red clay bluffs, vast pine forests and pileated woodpeckers replace the rocks, bison and rattlesnakes of the river’s upper reaches. Geologically, the Red River neatly bisects a large “shield” of exposed, high-elevation tertiary outcroppings, which form the entire northwestern quadrant of the state. This tertiary shield supports many of Louisiana’s rarest plants. To this day, the Louisiana segment of the Red River Valley is best known for its timber resources, and interest in its mixed-pine forests culminated in the formation of the 600,000-acre Kisatchie National Forest system. Most of the forest’s districts lay along the Red River Trail. The Red River Birding Trail consists of 82 bird watching sites in 18 Louisiana parishes.

The Lincoln H

Along the 179-mile Illinois Lincoln Highway, you will find over 30 interpretive gazebos and murals that help tell the story of America’s First Coast-toCoast Road. Dedicated in 1913, the Lincoln Highway runs about 25 miles through the Chicago Southland from Lynwood in the east to New Lenox in the west.

A series of nine murals were completed in 2012 featuring local and national Lincoln Highway history. The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition created these murals with support from a National Scenic Byway Grant from the Federal Highway Administration and an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Tourism, Attraction Development Grant. 2013 marked the 100th Anniversary for the Lincoln Highway.

Jay Allen, owner of ShawCraft Sign Company, created the interpretive mural series and shares some of the secrets he left in the paintings for you to find. For example, all of the murals have a very subdued “Allen- Hueg-Marshall” or “Allen-Marshall” logo painted on them along with the year they were painted.

Lynwood Mural

Sauk Village Mural

Location: 1 Sauk Trail Plaza (near the intersection of Torrence and Sauk Trail on the Fairway Foods building) The mural shows the early history of the Sauk Trail where automobiles and livestock “share” the Kalvelage Bridge in route to their destinations. Sauk Trail was designated as an original part of the Lincoln Highway through eastern Illinois and was a major road for daily commuter traffic.

Can you find it?: Hidden family names in the tree, and a message to Jay’s wife, Jody.

Chicago Heights Mural

Location: 21460 East Lincoln Highway The mural tells the story of Carl Fisher, the father of the Lincoln Highway. Fisher believed that the popularity of automobiles was dependent on good roads and in 1912 he began promoting his dream for a transcontinental highway.

Can you find it?: The initials RG for a departed friend and fellow artist Reneata Guzman.

Location: 137 East 14th St. Mural: The Mural is based on a vintage photograph of the McEldowney Bridge where the Lincoln Highway crosses Thorn Creek. The bridge included advancements like separate and protected pedestrian walkways and concrete lanterns. The first Field

Secretary of the Lincoln Highway Association, Henry C. Ostermann, crossed this bridge bi-annually as he inspected the new coast-to-coast highway.

Can you find it?: A small plaque is painted on the mural with the names of the people who made the mural trail possible. There are also two golden screws that were put in place by Chicago Heights Mayor David Gonzalez and Illinois State Representative Anthony DeLuca that mark the completion of the nine mural trail in the Chicago Southland.

Park Forest Mural

Location: 348 Victory Drive Mural shown abov: The mural commemorates the proclamation of the route and the naming of the first coast-to-coast highway in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. Because the founders of the highway needed to rally Americans from all walks of life, the highway was dedicated to Lincoln as a lasting memorial and that the establishment of a paved highway was everyone’s patriotic duty. Can you find it?

There are very small hidden family names and the RG initials mostly in Lincoln’s hair.

University Park Mural

Location: 580 Farmview Road in the Riegel Farm Complex In 1916, Adeline and Augusta Van Buren set out to prove women could ride motorcycles across the country to serve as military dispatch riders. They became the first women to make a solo coast-tocoast trek on the Lincoln Highway traveling from New York to California in about two months. No secrets are found in this mural. According to artist Jay Allen, this is the most detailed of all the Lincoln Highway murals and should be viewed close up; so it wouldn’t be appropriate.

The Mahler family’s garage was there to meet the needs of the increasingly mobile public. The mural is displayed on the actual building that is shown in the mural. Holes on the sides for binding and photo mounting corners on the images make the mural look like a page from a family photo album.

Can you find it? A plaque on the tow truck that details the project. The birthday of Jay’s wife Jody and “I miss you, Dad” dedicated to Jay’s late father.

Frankfort Mural

Location: 11008 West Lincoln Highway Mural: In July 1928, four Eagle Scouts were selected for a nationwide safety tour to promote the Lincoln Highway and the upcoming national scouting event in which the Lincoln Highway concrete markers would be installed. Location: 125 West Maple Street The trolley line that served New Lenox ran between Chicago Heights and Joliet and although dependable, it was quite slow. With the development of the Lincoln Highway a new form of independence

National Toy Truc The 32nd Annual National Toy Truck ’N Construction Show will be held Aug. 12, 13 and 14 at Wyndham Indianapolis West, 2544 Executive Drive in Indianapolis, Ind. “Plan to come early and stay for the whole show to join in the fun we are planning,” said Cathy Scheibe, publisher of Toy Trucker & Contractor magazine, which sponsors the National Toy Truck ’N Construction Show. “It’s no secret that the past three years have been difficult for many of us, but this year’s show promises to be the best one we’ve done in many years.

We have talked with the hotel and their scheduled remodel is on track. Ballrooms are finished. All hallways and doors are again open. The rear section where we had floor level vendors and our hospitality room three years ago will again be available for us and those vendors who were in that area.”

A special feature for the 2022 show: Ken Reimer and Aaron Hoffmeister plan to have on display an 8x8-foot diorama of the Tri-State Commodities Inc. yard, located in Greeley, Colo. Reimer is building the diorama and Hoffmeister will be furnishing trucks from his Tri-State collection.

Tri-State Commodities Inc. was

started in 1971 by Ivan D. (Jack) Shupe, who has been in the trucking industry almost his entire life, according to the company’s website. Over the last 40 years, he has watched Tri-State grow from a small one-truck company to a fleet of almost 50 trucks. Shupe

is still working at Tri-State Commodities, although he leaves the operation of the company to his two sons, Grant and Gregg, who have worked at Tri-State since graduating from high school. Other family members involved in the business are Grant’s wife, Wendy, who began working for Tri-State in 1983 and is now president of the company; Grant and Wendy’s son, Chad, who has also started working at Tri-State; and Gregg’s sons, Preston and Elliot, who plan to work for the company to con-

tinue the family tradition.

Another feature of this year’s show will be a live auction.

“We talked with our auctioneer, Darren Bock, and he tells us he has some very nice pieces going onto the auction and expects to have the online catalog ready by mid-July,” Scheibe said. “We are also contacting a few people we know to see if they would like to put some unique pieces on the auction that you will truly want to see in-person. Keep watching our website for further information on the auction.”

Sunday. General admission is $10 for adults for all three days of the show; children ages 12 and younger are free with a paying adult.

The show, now in its 32nd year, followed talk about a publication devoted to the toy truck hobby between Claire Scheibe, at that time publisher of Toy Farmer, and Gary Anderson in the early 1980s.

The result was American Toy Trucker, a newsletter, with Gary as publisher from 1983 to 1986. In July 1986, Dennis and Marge Lowry purchased the publication from Gary and then, in 1990, Claire and Cathy Scheibe took over, changed the name of the publication to Toy Trucker & Contractor magazine and the first issue was published in March 1990.

The Scheibes, who had experience with hosting the National

Farm Toy Show, sponsored by Toy Farmer, started the annual National Toy Truck ’N Construction show to spotlight die-cast truck manufacturers, along with toy dealers and custom truck builders.

At first, the event alternated show sites between Dyersville, Iowa, and Rochester, N.Y. At that time, Ertl was still producing trucks in Dyersville and Winross made trucks in Rochester. For the past several years, it has been held in Indianapolis, except for 2017, when it made a one-year return to Dyersville.

The National Toy Truck ’N Construction Show usually draws collectors from around the world, who get a chance to talk to representatives from many of the die-

cast companies which produce the collectible replicas, as well as families who appreciate the friendly atmosphere and various events featured at the show.

My favorite accessible waterfalls are in one of Michigan’s 103 State Parks, Tahquamenon Falls State Park. A little over an hour from Mackinac Bridge, you can find fantastic hiking trails and some of the most beautiful waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The North Country Trail travels 16 miles within the park, including a 4-mile trail between the Upper and Lower Falls. Part of the trail along the river is a boardwalk near the Lower Tahquamenon Falls, a series of five smaller cascading waterfalls around an island that can be reached by rowboat and a newly constructed bridge on the south side of the island.

The Upper Tahquamenon Falls is almost 50 feet tall and over 200 feet across, with over 50,000 gallons of water cascading over the edge of the ancient sandstone. The coppery-colored water is from the natural tannins leached from vegetation near the river, which you can see up close after following a

short-paved trail to the 90+ steps to get down to the edge. Watch out; you might get wet from the mist rising around you.

Pictured Rocks Bed & Breakfast The Tahquamenon Falls State Park has a campground where you can stay, but there is more to see in the U.P., and staying in the heart of it would put you in Munising. Munising is where you will find breathtaking scenery while enjoying fabulous hiking trails, waterfalls upon waterfalls, and spectacular sights of the colorful Pictured Rocks. The best

place to stay overnight in Munising is the Pictured Rocks Bed & Breakfast, providing views that make you think you are directly on Lake Superior’s Munising Bay. Lakeshore, along with over 100 miles of hiking trails. One trail, in particular, is Lakeshore North Country National Scenic Trail, a 42.4-mile trail between Munising and Grand Marais. This trail is one that I recommend but on a much shorter distance. The hiking trail from Munising Falls is wellmarked with a 3-mile wooded path that will take you to Miners Castle, the most famous landmark in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

This is the magnificent beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Pro Tip: It is recommended that you use a shuttle service, Altran Alger County Transit, at the beginning of your trip, where you park your car at Miners Castle, take a shuttle to Munising Falls and hike back to your vehicle.

Dogpatch

After a full day of hiking, head to the Dogpatch in Munising, home of the Legendary Vittles.

They offer a huge food selection, including soup and salad Bar, country breakfasts, seafood, steaks, and sandwiches. You can’t go wrong ordering anything in this restaurant, the fish dinners are tasty, and the burgers will fill you up. Don’t be surprised if you have to wait for a table as this place gets busy in the evening as the Pictured Rocks sunset cruises dock.

Canyon Falls and Gorge

It takes about two hours to reach Canyon Falls in L’Anse from Munising. Canyon Falls Roadside Park is 15 miles south of L’Anse on US 41. There is plenty of park-

ing at the roadside park. The scenic trail starts at the parking lot with a boardwalk leading into the woods. It is an easy trail for a family, but be careful of the tree roots, boulders, and uneven boardwalk planks.

In approximately half a mile, you reach a gorgeous view of a series of rapids and small waterfalls on the Sturgeon River. Most people turn back here, but if you have the time go further on the trail, which becomes more naturalistic. As you follow the river deeper into the woods, you will eventually come across Canyon Falls. Canyon Falls is considered the ‘Grand Canyon of the U.P.’ with the fast-moving river flowing over a 30-foot large chute of smooth black slate going directly into a 300-foot-deep box canyon. This magnificent trek is a 3.9-mile round trip and takes almost an hour and a half to complete.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a nature adventure waiting for you once you drive over the Mackinac Bridge. Whether you discover the trails that lead you to see amazing sights like Miners Castle at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, rapids in Canyon Gorge, or the largest waterfall east of the Mississippi (besides Niagara Falls), Tahquamenon Falls, there is something for the entire family. Just remember, up here, we “Take Nothing but Pictures, Leave Nothing but Footprints.”

Participate in the BOONVILLE - The Ford tractor and farm equipment will receive the honors at the 59th Annual Back to the Farm Reunion when it takes place in September. Ford tractors, cars, trucks, and Fordson tractors will be featured.

The Ford-Fordson Collectors Association, Inc. has scheduled their national show in conjunction with the event. These events will take place Sept. 8-11 at the Brady Farmstead Showgrounds.

They are being hosted and organized by the Missouri River Valley Steam Engine Association.

Families who attend may learn more about the equipment with various ongoing demonstrations.

There will be blacksmithing, threshing and rock crushing with steam, straw baling, lumber sawing, and historical life skills. The children can enjoy a train ride and petting zoo. Don’t miss out on the themed tractor games Saturday.

The parades of power occur each day at 1 p.m. You won’t want to miss the tractor cruise on Friday at 8 a.m. This cruise will travel approimately 39 miles and lunch will be provided. Welcome to Katy Trail State Park, the longest developed railtrail in the country. Katy Trail State Park attracts people of all ages and interests. The section of trail between Cooper County and St. Charles County has been designated as an official segment of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Katy Trail is also part of the American Discovery Trail, has been designated as a Millennium Legacy Trail and was added to the Railsto-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame in 2008.

Trail users have the opportunity to wind through some of the most scenic areas of the state with the majority of the trail closely following the Missouri River. The park also takes users through a slice of rural history as it meanders through the small towns that once thrived along the railroad corridor and reflect the rich heritage of Missouri. Information at the trailheads makes a ride or walk on the Katy not only a healthy adventure, but also an educational one.

Let’s Go On A Farm Wagon Trail Ride CLAY CENTER - Among all the scheduled activities of the Old Trusty Antique and Collectors Show, a favorite organized by Larry Overy is the annual trail ride on authentic farm wagons pulled by horses.

“It gives the kids a true idea of what it was like to be on a farm back in the day and it brings back a lot of good memories for the older folks,” said Larry.

As a rule, there are usually 1012 owners of horses and wagons The rides are free other than the overall regular $7 show admission. However, it is best if those wishing to join in the fun should call ahead and make reservations.

Paying tribute to the Allis-Chalmers tractors and equipment as well as scale model engines, the organzation is also hosting the Gathering of the Orange.

Join in the fun of the kids pedal pull, a draft horse and mule show, as well as adult stock antique tractor pull. Tractors for this event must be 1959 models or older.

People to See:

Tracking Down Neb Jesse James used the rugged terrain of the hills along the Missouri River to hide from posses chasing the infamous outlaw. His and other outlaws’ stories are the foundation for the historic Outlaw Trail along Highway 12, one of Nebraska’s nine historic scenic byways. During your adventure from the Missouri River valley through the majestic Sandhills, you’ll witness impressive views and encounter history, along with a few unique finds.

1. Siouxland Freedom Park

Located on the east end of the Outlaw Trail in South Sioux City, Siouxland Freedom Park recognizes veterans with a half-size replica of the Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC. The park also includes sculptures and a visitors center along its walking trail. The only Freedom Rock located outside of Iowa is located here.

2. Ponca State Park

home to the oldest tree in Nebraska, dating back to the early 1600s. Whether it’s a day trip or extended weekend getaway, Ponca State Park is one of the state’s most-popular state parks. 3. Ionia volcano historical marker

Check out the Ionia Volcano historical marker in Newcastle. During the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804, William Clark believed a set of bluffs above the Missouri River was on fire, caused by a volcanic eruption. It was later believed to be pyrites falling into water, creating fires.

4. Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area

Located about 12 miles north of Crofton, the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area offers boating and swimming fun near Gavins Point Dam. The 25mile long Lewis and Clark Lake, constructed as part of the Missouri River dam system, is divided between Nebraska and South Dakota.

Cruise the lake on a sail boat, water ski, or just relax on the beach as part of a day at the state rec area. Consider staying overnight at the Historic Hotel Argo Bead and Breakfast, with themed rooms. The B&B is believed to be haunted.

5. Ponca tribal headquarters museum

Learn the history of the Ponca tribe with a visit to the Native American museum and education trail,

Afterward, explore the trail, as it winds past sculptures, information placards, and earth lodge, culminating at the statue of Chief Standing Bear. Surrounded by a floral garden and medicine wheel, the statue of Standing Bear recognizes the person who won the first civil rights case involving a Native American.

6. Monowi

With a population of one, Monowi is the smallest town in the United States. At its height, the village in Boyd Count had 150 residents. Elsie Eiler owns the Monowi Tavern and serves as the town’s mayor. She lives a few steps from the tavern, and also maintains Rudy’s Library, with about 5,000 books, named in honor of her late husband. Stop in for a burger and drink; maybe you’ll meet Elsie.

7. Smith Falls State Park

At more than 60 feet tall, Smith Falls is Nebraska’s tallest waterfall. It’s also the coldest. The waterfall is fed by a small spring and is situated mostly in the shade, so people line up to stabs under the cold water. Travel another 50 feet downstream and the water is much warmer. Hike an easily-navigable wooded trail, including an old highway bridge converted into a pedestrian walkway across the Niobrara River, from the camping area to the waterfall. The river is perfect for canoes and kayaks. The state park, on the western end of the Outlaw Trail, is part of the Niobrara National Scenic River, covering 76 miles of beautiful natural views. While in the area, visit Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, home to nature trails, as well as a bison herd and other wild animals.

8. Valentine

Pick up a postcard and drop by the Valentine post office to get a Valentines Day-themed postal stamp.

ie stop in front of a romantic heart. Check out the area’s cowboy influence at Young’s Western Wear, a nearly-block long store with clothing, boots, saddles, and other western accessories. Enjoy time on the Cowboy Trail, a converted rail that features a wooden bridge east of Valentine that stretches a quarter-mile across the Niobrara River and is almost 150 feet above the river.

LANCASTER — Visit Fairfield County has several interesting trails, but the Sweet Tooth Trail remains a favorite among visitors.

The area consists of approximately 100 miles of primary, secondary, and tertiary trails for many different levels of OHV riding.

WRANGLERS HORSE TRAIL

Blue Ridge Craft Trail The completed, drivable craft trails now cover 25 Western North Carolina counties, all in the Blue Ridge mountains and foothills and the Qualla Boundary, home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Chandler says the footprint of the Blue Ridge Craft Trails is equivalent to the land covered by the state of Maryland.

“Western North Carolina is one of the most distinctive cultures in the United States,” said Angie Chandler, executive director of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area (BRNHA). “We have amazing craft artists and galleries with such variety and creativity. They are ready to welcome locals and visitors alike.”

The Blue Ridge Craft Trails offer a new reason to visit the mountains and foothills, get outside and explore hidden gems. Destination Analysts new American travel research shows travelers will focus on fun in 2022, going to less crowded places and enjoying the outdoors.

The Blue Ridge Craft Trails answer the need, including wellknown destinations such as Ashe-

ville and stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It also invites visitors to small towns and communities such as West Jefferson, Murphy, Sparta and Waynesville to meet artists and makers. Regional itineraries on the website home page combine craft stops with local food, culture and outdoor exploration.

In addition to attracting visitors to small towns, Chandler says the project also connects makers with buyers, bringing economic development to the region.

“Our heritage area was established to preserve traditional and contemporary craft as a living tradition in Western North Carolina,” explains Chandler. “I have long family history in this region.

When you think about it, art is an inspired response to the mountains, foothills, forests and fauna around us. Craft is in our cultural DNA.” Items you are sure to see when visiting are Cherokee crafts, fiber arts, furniture, glass, jewelry, pottery, quilting, sculpture, woodworking, instruments and printmaking.

Ancient Ruins Trails Let’s combine some history with the outdoors. Explore the remains of the old fire tower residence on Paris Mountain, or follow a trail along a river to discover the ruins of an old mill. Prefer old railroads? Check out these trails to ancient ruins in South Carolina that lead to amazing sights.

1. Fire Tower Residence - Paris Mountain State Park, Greenville-After last fall’s massive fire it seems perfectly fitting to trek up to the ruins of the old residence of the fire tower at Paris Mountain. The trailhead spurs off from another trail.

The above map should help you figure out your best route of getting to the trailhead to see the ruins. The trail to the fire tower is only four-tenths of a mile long once you reach the trailhead, but you’ll hike another trail just to get to the trailhead. 2. Landsford Canal - (Landsford Canal State Park CATAWBA - Explore the ruins of a defunct canal once used to bypass the rapids on the Catawba River. The canal was no longer needed once the railroad arrived. Explore the remnants of this canal which are still embedded in the ground -- and then walk around the remains of the lockkeepers house. The trail to the canal site is 1.25 miles one-way and is flat terrain. Head out on this one in May or June and you won’t be able to miss the largest stand of spider lillies in the nation. They practically cover the riv-

3. Old Railroad Trestle ALSTON - Follow along a trail bed of an old railroad on this passage of the Palmetto Trail. You won’t need to walk the entire 10.8 miles to discover ruins. From the trailhead in Alston you’ll cross an 1,100 foot former rail trestle and enjoy incredible views of the Broad River. From there, the next 10 miles includes 13 more wooden trestles. 6. Whitestone Springs Resort ruins SPARTANBURG - Access the Whitestone Springs Spur (approximately 3/4 mile long) from the 3.4 mile Rocky Ridge Trail at Croft State Park in Spartanburg. At just over 4 miles each way, it’s no short hike. But the payoff is, you get to visit the ruins of a once-famous hotel that sat on the ridge next to White Springs.

Even if you miss those peak days (usually in late October), vivid pops of yellows, oranges, plums and reds hang around until cooler temperatures give way to winter scenes in December. Explore these hikes and walks for idyllic fall views.

Rotary Park

Rotary Park is a wooded city park that offers about six miles of moderate hiking on 12 designated and intersecting trails. Some trails are pedestrian-only, some mountain bikes only, but most are dual-purpose. The most popular trailhead for hiking is the area by the Creekside pavilion where a concrete ADA-compliant path follows then crosses a creek to connect with several intersecting trails. A newer access point that’s just a scenic is adjacent to the new Wade Bourne Nature Center near the back of the park. Take the sidewalk to the wooded playground then hop on the Boy Scout Camp Trail, a downhill jaunt with switchbacks that connects to Barn Path East. This flattens out and follows a creek, borders a few disc golf holes, then climbs back around for several more options of intersecting trails. Here’s a great trail map.

Tip: Since you’re walking east at the outset, hit the trail early and catch the filtered morning light, then enjoy brunch or lunch afterward. New restaurants nearby are 931 Cafe serving gourmet breakfast burritos, freshly-made juices, and açaí bowls, Kadi’s Tacos. a food-truck-turned-storefront with

breakfast burritos, and Dock 17 offering Southern gourmet brunch and burgers, along with local brews and craft cocktails.

Upland Trail

Clarksville’s downtown Upland Trail is an urban trail that connects the Cumberland Riverwalk into downtown through a series of meandering paved trails. Along the way, you’ll spot public art and a gazebo, cross an abandoned railroad trestle (or two, depending on your route options), and still enjoy fantastic river views. Approaching downtown. the historic architectural gems are the highlight of this trail system.

Tip: Begin at the Spur Line Park trailhead for a meandering park entrance gated by remnants of the historic bridge. Then enjoy some of Tennessee’s best BBQ at Legends Smokehouse & Grill, a new dine-in restaurant that recently opened following years as a successful food-truck, or for lighter fare, enjoy Hot Pita with customizable fresh-ingredient pitas and bowls.

Cumberland RiverWalk

Easily turn time on the Upland Trail into a longer outing by connecting with the ever-expanding Cumberland Riverwalk.

History buffs will enjoy the Park’s RiverCenter at McGregor Park with visual representations of Clarksville’s development from that point at the river. It’s fascinating to see how both droughts and floods affected the city before water levels were controlled by dams. Heading north along the wide paved walkway, you’ll encounter the convergence of the Cumberland and Red Rivers where Clarksville was first settled in 1784. From there, the newer sections of the trail parallel the Red. These peaceful treks showcase scenic bluffs and are near water level, which may appear bright green or rusty red, depending on recent rainfall.

Tip: If you want to enjoy the full extent of the combined trails -- about seven miles round trip -opt to rent a B-Cycle for a leisurely ride. Benches are also dotted along the trails to relax and take in the glorious river views.

The Clarksville Greenway

The Clarksville Greenway is a 9-mile paved walking and biking trail that allows you to escape the hurries of the city. The variety of views along the expansive trail keeps an outing here interesting from start to finish. The main trailhead is at Pollard’s Road, which is about the center of the trail. A recently expanded parking makes this popular spot much easier to navigate. Both directions offer bluff-lined and tree-covered experiences, wildlife, and open vistas.

Heading south includes more hills. Heading north is flat and will bring you to one of the most Insta-worthy spots in Clarksville, the Hand Pass, a 600-foot pedestrian bridge. You can also access the greenway at trailheads further north or south, and BCycle rentals are also available at the Pollard’s Road entrance. Here’s a trail map.

Tip: The Greenway is an ideal place for younger bikers, even with training wheels. The even payment and mostly flat areas are perfect for perfecting those skills.

North Ford St. Mountain Bike Trail

This mountain-bike only trail is one of the more serene spots in Clarksville. And, like the Green-

way, it’s tucked away behind a residential area where you might not expect to find such beauty.

Located just south of the Clarksville Greenway, the 3.5-mile trek will soon be connected to the full Greenway trail system. The volunteers who maintain the park (Clarksville Area Mountain Bike Alliance) are top-notch and continue to work hard to create new trails and areas that are both challenging for advanced riders, while offering simpler options for beginners. They recently installed a children’s-only area, so it’s a terrific place to take the whole family for some fun. Riders under age 15 must be accompanied by an adult on the main trail.

Tip: Follow the CAMBA TN website directions; don’t rely on your vehicle’s GPS.

Port Royal Historic State Park

The trails are short at Port Royal, but the history and surrounding rural scenes are a worthy venture.

Enjoy a drive along the winding, tree-covered Hwy. 76. The natural switchbacks are a big hit with motorcyclists. You might find that you immediately breathe a little slower and longer, relishing the rolling countryside views and firing tobacco aromas. Sulpher Fork Creek intersects with the Red River at the park, which became a thriving town during the tobacco trade. It’s also part of the National Trail of Tears Historic Trail. So, there’s much to learn in this small park.

Tip: In October, make a stop at Boyd’s Pumpkin Patch for a corn maze, games, photo opps and plenty of pumpkins. And, be adventurous enough to explore some of the smaller side roads near and around the park for beautiful agricultural and barn scenes.

Dunbar Cave State Park

Last, but far from least, is Dunbar Cave State Park. This area provides magnificent fall scenery, as evidenced by the number of photographers you’ll have dodge.

The 144-acre park is popular year-round for both visitors and residents, hikers and trail runners.

Between May 1 and September, the cave is open for guided tours, which sell out quickly. During fall, winter and early spring, enjoy scenes along the wooded trails that wind around the cave and over the small lake. You’re guaranteed to see a variety of wildlife, sunning turtles or maybe a flock of baby ducks. A lesser-known section of the trail is a .75-native grasslands trail after crossing Tom Dillard Lane.

Pets on leashes are welcome at all city and state parks.

Be a Waterfall Wanderer

The nation’s newest national park, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, is drawing white water rafting and rock climbing adventure seekers. Still West Virginia’s latest attraction is worth chasing, waterfalls that is.

Outdoor enthusiasts can take on West Virginia’s Waterfall Trail, the nation’s first-ever statewide waterfall trail. Falls span the state, from West Virginia’s Northern-most panhandle headed south to the national park.

Splashing, falling, and roaring-these waterfalls are worth discovering. Find Blackwater Falls that plunge from high, rocky bluffs of the Allegheny Mountains. Hear

them thundering loudly before you can see their awe-inspiring beauty. White ribbons of water land below transforming to amber-colored waters, dyed from the nearby fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. Retire to the Blackwater Falls Lodge, cabins, or campground in Blackwater Falls State Park.

Another favorite, Sandstone Falls, stretches 1,500 feet wide creating panoramic cascades that beg to be seen in person. Between the falls are mini islands with blooms and greens. Thanks to a boardwalk, the falls can be easily enjoyed by all in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

den gem, Finn’s Falls, is adjacent to ACE Adventure Resort. Just a little over a mile, a picnic bench waits for those who wish to relax to waterfall sounds while enjoying lunch.

The Rettig Family of six, including four teenagers, decided to stay several nights at ACE Adventure Resort this summer instead of their usual beach vacation. With her oldest twins headed off to college in the fall, Katie Rettig says this was the perfect trip to take.

“Our kids are really at the age now where they want more adventure-filled, active vacations.

All four teens loved staying at the chalet near New River Gorge National Park. We went whitewater rafting, hiking and spent the day

at ACE’s water adventure park,” Rettig, says.

Staying several days also gave the family a chance to explore part of the waterfall trail. “The trek to Sandstone Falls was short and easy,” says Avery Rettig, age 15. “Families were pushing babies in strollers on the boardwalk. It’s really a trail for everyone. We also went off trail where we could touch the water at the base of the falls and throw rocks,”she says.

Six of the Waterfall Trail falls can be found at New River Gorge National Park. From tall tumbling falls to gurgling multi-layered cascades, the location promises favorite falls with some hidden gems.

Outside the park, more waterfall wandering awaits. Just north, Babcock State Park is home to Glade Creek Grist Mill Falls. The scene transports back in time with the old mill framing the peaceful cascades. These falls might look familiar as they are one of the most photographed spots in West Virginia, especially in fall.

The northernmost spot, West Virginia’s panhandle, might not have the majestic waterfalls found elsewhere. Yet, what Oglebay Falls lacks in size, it makes up for in relaxation. Oglebay Resort is lush with green hills dotted with deer, and 2,000 acres of public park land. Local history, fine dining, lodging, golf, museums, and period architecture are just a sampling of Ogelbay’s offerings.

Being a waterfall wanderer in West Virginia also comes with rewards. Travelers use their smartphones as a Waterfall Trail Passport to earn prizes.

Check in to “stamp” your passport at three stations to earn a sticker, 10 or more an aluminum water bottle, and 20 or more a waterfall wanderer T-shirt.

That way, long after you return home, waterfall memories will return.

Taking the trail can be adapted to anyone. Whether you seek wild or mild, waterfalls are waiting.

Steep treks to jaw-dropping heights or peaceful strolls listening to the waterfall’s music–it’s all on the trail. Spend a day, spend a week, or go back again and again.
