Top 10 Golf Outings

A new study has identified the states best equipped for a round of golf, with North Dakota claiming the top spot.

Casino Zonder Registratie analyzed data from Golf Link to tally the number of golf courses in each US state. This data was then adjusted for population size to calculate the number of courses per 100,000 residents. The ranking was based on states with the highest number of courses. Additional insights were gathered from Tripadvisor to assess the average ratings of all golf courses in each state.

North Dakota ranks top, with 14.67 golf courses per 100,000 people. The state is home to 115 golf courses which are made up of 69 public, 42 municipal and four private courses. North Dakota boasts an average course rating of 4.31 out of 5, with its longest course measuring 7,166 yards and its oldest course being established in 1907.

Second place is South Dakota, with 13.27 golf courses per 100,000 residents. Out of 122 golf courses, the state has 81 public, 34 municipal and seven private courses. South Dakota’s oldest golf course was founded in 1905, and its longest course is 7,245 yards from the back tees. All the courses in the state have a combined average score of 4.26 out of 5.

Third place is Iowa, with 11.35 golf courses per 100,000 inhabitants. Iowa’s oldest course was established in 1888, now having 364 golf courses. The average course rating is 4.01 out of 5.

Nebraska places fourth, with 11.12 golf courses per 100,000 people. The state is home to 220 golf courses. Nebraska scored an average course rating of 4.31 out of 5.

In fifth is Vermont, with 10.50 golf courses per 100,000 residents, a total of 68 golf courses. Vermont’s oldest golf course was founded in 1886. Every course has a combined average score of 4.04 out of 5.

Wyoming is #6, 10.27 golf courses per 100,000 inhabitants. There are 60 courses with average course rating 4.34 out of 5.

Maine is #7 with 9.67 golf courses per 100,000 people. The state is home to 135 golf courses. with an average course rating of 4.25 out of 5.

Montana is #8 with 9.18 golf courses per 100,000 residents with total of 104 golf courses. Montana’s oldest golf course was founded in 1900, and all have a combined average score of 4.37 out of 5.

Wisconsin is #9 with 8.81 golf courses per 100,000 inhabitants. Wisconsin’s oldest golf course was established in 1893, and the state has an incredible 521 courses, the average course rating is 4.39 out of 5.

Michigan is #10 with 8.62 golf courses per 100,000 people. The state is home to 865 courses –the greatest number among the top ten. Michigan scored an average course rating of 4.14 out of 5.

California ranks last, with 2.40 golf courses per 100,000 residents. From a total of 937 golf courses, the state’s oldest golf course was founded in 1893. Every course in the state has a combined average score of 4.15 out of 5.
