Fire and Ice Festival
ELY - Ready to get to know the coolest (and hottest) winter fest in Nevada? Head for the annual Fire and Ice Winter Festival, hosted by one of the best mountain towns in eastern Nevada. A signature annual event that’s been part of the Ely story since 2003 the festivities are normally headquartered at Cave Lake State Park, the Nevada Northern Railway, Ward Mountain Recreation Area, and Downtown Ely.
It all began as an arts festival featuring ice sculpting. Teams came from all areas to compete for create their pieces of art on the ice at Cave Lake State Park. This has since grown from bowling to art sculpture bonfires, tournaments to live music, historic train rides and a fireworks display launched from a moving steam train.
During the day, watch the multiple snow sculptures come to life (weather cooperating) at Broadbent Park. This year no events will be held at the Cave Lake State Park as usual. While in town, be sure to tour the White Pine Public Museum or take in all the murals in downtown Ely. Test your skills in darts, disc golf, horseshoe, and cornhole tournaments or paint ceramics at Desert Rose Ceramics.
Once the sun sets, you can participate in a pub crawl, rock out at a concert, or hop aboard the Fireworks Express Saturday or Sunday at the historic Nevada Northern Railway and East Ely Depot Railroad Museum. This is an experience you and the whole family are sure to remember forever. After all, where else will you be able to experience fireworks blasting off a historic, early-1900s-era locomotive while riding? Be sure to get your hands on tickets in advance, as this one always sells out!
The art sculpture bonfire is the icing on the festival cake, scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday. Judging of the ice sculptures will take place Sunday at 3 p.m. Movies will be shown at Central Theatre.
No matter how you decide to experience this top annual Nevada event, it’s safe to say Ely has something going on all over town, all day long.
