Oh, the places we can go and things we can do when we hit the roads in our RV. Fast becoming the hottest trend this summer, see more on page 10.

Up Close: From the Editor

My first memories any form of camping go back to summers under the dining room table. you see, summers can get very hot and muggy in Missouri and we did not have central air condining. In fact, I can vaguely remember my mother placing a bag of ice in front of our only fan to try and cool the air coming from the twirling blades. One particular summer, however, the fan just did not do justice. After budgeting and saving for what seemed like two forevers, the big day finally arrived when my father brought home a long-awaited box containing a room air conditioning unit. The another forever of waiting until all instructions were studied and the right tpe of plug-in was installed to secure the window unit. There was no discussion of central air until many years later. So once the dining room/living room had cooled enough to shut out the heat from the rest of the house, we certainly didn’t want to leave and go to bed. Thus, the invention of draping quilts over the dining room table and one chair (for the entrance) and dragging our pillows with us to the comforts of our makeshift tent. Oh, it was so much fun! Eventually, we enticed Mother to let us bring in the reclining webbed lawnchairs inside to make it seem more like an extended weekend getaway at the beach. With camping as an exploding trend for families due to COVID-19, we are focusing the different options of places to go, things to do and people to see while staying safe in this issue. So readers, as we venture back out into the world from home, let’s take a much-needed break and make some new memories to cherish for years to come. Enjoy!

For the Bargain Hunters coronavirus crisis. They won’t keep their 80%-off sales going one minute longer than they have to. Tips: 1. Will the company offering the largest discount still be there? Book with some of the bigger brands of hotels, resorts and cruise lines. They’re far less likely to go under during these difficult times.

Three for Two

Guests who are members of the free-to-join Wyndham Rewards program can book a stay of two consecutive nights or more at www.WyndhamRewards.com/ freenight to earn a one-time 7,500 points bonus – enough for a free night at thousands of hotels – upon the completion of their stay. Stays must be booked directly with Wyndham Rewards from July 16 through September 8, 2020 and completed by September 10, 2020. The 7,500 bonus points are additional to any points normally earned for the stay. Guests must be members of Wyndham Rewards, which is free to join. To register, book a stay or view full terms and conditions, visit WyndhamRewards.com/freenight

2. Check the cancellation terms carefully. Look for those that allow complete refunds if COVID-19 continues past your travel date. Travel companies are changing them almost by the minute. Make sure you get the rules in writing before you make a reservation. That means print out a hard copy or take a screenshot.

3. Use a credit card. If the airline, cruise line or hotel goes out of business, you can file a chargeback and obtain a full refund. If you pay by check or cash, your money is as good as gone. 4. Follow the news closely. Coronavirus is affecting destinations differently. For example, you may be fine visiting one state in the near future. However, you’ll want to avoid the state with fresh outbreaksand rising numbers. Keep an eye on current events as your trip gets closer and don’t be afraid to invoke those generous cancellation terms if the situation takes a turn for the worse.

COVID - 19 TRAVEL?

No one knows how long the deals will last. Airfares may be at their lowest point now, but cruise tickets and hotels could drop further, depending on the rate of recovery. The conventional wisdom seems to be: If you see a deal you like, buy it now. Travel companies will try to raise prices as soon as they can to make up for the revenue lost during the

Column Feature-Things to Do:

By Kandy Derden Things to Do Editor

Cooking With a Purpose I love to read. It is a well-known fact about me among friends and family members. There are a few kindred spirits within this group who completely understand why I don’t allow books near me during particularly busy weeks. Otherwise, I spend my time immersed in a good story and nothing else gets done. And if it does get done, it isn’t on time. Time spent reading is never wasted. In addition to the entertainment value, I learn about a wide variety of subjects. For example, as a writer I have gleaned many tips and pointers along with an even longer list of do’s and don’ts. In one instance, I read a book years ago about an author who wrote a paragraph where her heroine ran into a building and up the stairs to . . . to what? She was stumped! After giving it a bit of thought, she rewrote the scene with her main character running down the steps and out the door to the wide open street. In so doing, she realized the possibilities for her character’s story became endless. This month, we are focusing on the great outdoors. As you might expect, the opportunities there really are unlimited. Even with social distancing, there is camping, hiking, bird watching, biking, jogging, running, grilling, picnicking, scenic route driving, swimming, fishing, canoeing, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, sand pit volleyball, tennis, baseball and more! The list goes on and on. What’s your favorite? Which one is best? Doesn’t matter. They all have their pros and cons. What do they all have in common besides being outdoors? They all make you hungry! There may not be a large amount of eating establishments close by most -8- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2020

of the above listed activities. And if there is one, it might still be closed, so it is a good idea to take something to eat with you on your excursion. You might be in the minority if you keep a supply of protein power bars or trail mix on hand. I try to keep such items in my desk at all times. I’ve learned from working with diabetics the value of never going anywhere without something readily available to ward off a sugar spike. That being said, it helps if it is a tasty snack. This recipe is a cross between caramel popcorn and Chex party mix. I first tasted it years ago as a food judge at a state fair. It was quickly declared the first place prize winner. POPCORN SNACK MIX 3 quarts popped popcorn 4 cups corn or rice Chex 1 cup brown sugar ¼ cup margarine

½ teaspoon baking soda 4 cups Cheerios 2 cups salted peanuts ¾ cup corn syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla In a large greased roasting pan, combine popcorn, cereal and nuts. In a large saucepan, combine brown sugar, corn syrup and margarine. Bring to a rolling boil. Boil for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, quickly stir in vanilla and soda until light and foaming. Immediately pour over popcorn; mix well. Bake, uncovered, at 250 degrees for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool completely. Store in an airtight container then toss some into a zipper bag to take with you when you visit the great outdoors. It’s an excellent way to nourish your muscles. Oh, and if you’re like me, be sure to take a book along to feed your mind.

Tips for Perfect

T

By Lauren Strait Strait Talk pr

he one positive thing trending in America today amid the coronavirus pandemic is a good old American pastime – a family road trip. Before airplane prices became more affordable for middle America in the 1980s, road trips were the main event for many American families. With the lasting effects of the coronavirus pandemic still unknown, one way to escape the world for a bit all while maintaining proper social distancing is road tripping in a recreational vehicle. More than 20% of Americans surveyed in the summer of 2020 have been more interested in RVs as a recreational travel option, according to the RV Industry Association. About half of those who plan to take any RV trip this year said health concerns increased their interest. The best part of this type of travel is the advanced technology, gizmos and gadgets that have made this type of travel more comfortable, convenient and accessible than ever before.

First Timers

With cruises cancelled, limited flights and closed international borders, venturing out RV style can certainly seem like an overwhelming, yet intriguing alternative. The first thing you really need to decide is where you want to go and how far you want to travel away from home. There are so many ways you can make this decision. With travel, you can openly dream of winding roads, landscapes and cities you wish to immerse yourself in, and then find a way to make those dreams come true. Whether you are trekking through a forest, paddling down a river, bearing hostile weather conditions, testing your adaptability or hoping for some sort of revelation, travel is a healthy outlet for our sanity that can be done even during a pandemic. For most families, enjoying the basic concept of “Get Outside” is the number one goal. This means, finding places where they can entertain themselves with the purity and scenic backdrops of nature. The whole family can get involved in destination plan-10- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2020

ning by talking about what types of nature they would like to see – this can be a waterfall, or activities by a river, ultimate hikes, or beaches we have on our bucket list. From there, they can get together and research areas that may have these features, and map out their trip that way. Other families talk about bucket list places they want to visit such as National Parks, monuments, places that are close to family that they don’t get to see often, or even experiences that are only available for RVers, such as becoming a harvest host, which involves free camping on a farm or vineyard in exchange for a day of help harvesting fruits and vegetables.

Planning

If this sounds overwhelming, don’t worry. There are also several apps to help you along with planning. Some highly rated ones include Boondocking, FreeRoam, Campendium, Dyrt and Hipcamp. These apps can help you from navigating roads, to special stops, gas stations, and site seeing along the way to your destination. They can also help find the best RV parks, resorts or off grid sites for your family. Each one has its own unique offering. One blessing of America, especially during times like these, is that anyone with a vehicle can go anywhere. This makes the next decision simple – what type of RV you would like to travel in. From renting to buying, there so many options to choose from. Rental options range from companies that own their homes on wheels, like Cruise America, or marketplace platforms where you can find someone else’s RV to rent.

From personal experience, Cruise America makes it easy to rent. “We focus on a ‘no frills’ strategy, which allows for easy use and nothing to break,” said Randall Smalley, executive assistant vice president for global marketing and business development. Their vehicles are purposely built by their own employed Cruise America teams to withstand vigor-

Summer Camping ous vacation use. They really do keep it simple to make it easy for families to use, drive and operate so the only thing you need to worry about is how the fun you plan to have with your home on the road. Their economical family units can hold from three to seven people. Features of their vehicles include air conditioning, fresh water toilet, gas cooktop, generator, refrigerator, microwave, shower, beds, kitchenette and folding table. Plus all of their vehicles are pet-friendly for those who don’t want to leave their furry family members behind.

Cruise America’s rental fees range between $50$150 per day. This includes insurance and third party liability, which is an added bonus for those who are nervous about accidents that may occur on the road or during your trip.

RV Travel Benefits - - - - -

Your own bathroom Your own bedding Digital detox Reconnecting with nature Enjoying the in-between destinations

- Creative camping meals - Freedom of your own schedule - It’s affordable

There are so many benefits to travel via RV, that are even more attractive during a pandemic like this. First and foremost, let’s have some potty talk. Having your own potty has to be one of the highest benefits on my personal list. Effective social distancing requires limited contact with others and limited interactions at rest stops, gas stations and fast food restaurants. Having your own potty eliminates the exposure of using public toilets completely. This pandemic has changed how everyone does business, and in small towns, this can mean either completely shutting down, or not allowing you to come into their stores or restaurants. It is a blessing to have your own potty for that special emergency. Getting out and into nature also has its own benefits. It allows for a true digital detox, especially after all of that Netflix and chilling you have been doing recently in between conference calls and laundry. It gets kids off their gaming systems and allows them to refocus on their surroundings. Research has even proven that environments can increase or reduce stress. Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases August, 2020 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -11-

pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. In addition, nature helps us cope with pain. Because we are genetically programmed to find trees, plants, water, and other nature elements engrossing, we are absorbed by nature scenes and distracted from our pain and discomfort. At the end of the day, Richard Louve stated it best when he said, “time in nature is not leisure time; its’ an essential investment in our children’s health, (and also, by the way, in our own).” Those who own or rent an RV can stock it with their own bedding, their own food and personal items to give them the feeling that it’s a safer option than flying, staying in hotels or dining in at restaurants. Plus this is another way you can stay isolated and properly social distance from others to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

So Why RV Travel Now?

During the middle of a pandemic, why venture out in an RV for the “Great American Road Trip” now? Although many restrictions are still in place, travel is slowly starting up again. People locked down for months want to stretch their legs, see something other than a screen, and reconnect with nature. Here are some reasons why RV travel Visiting National Parks are possible while social distancing. You can successfully avoid big crowds in the great outdoors. The key is keeping a six-foot distance. A good practice at a park is to pretend

-12- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2020

that other people are grizzly bears and stay away from them. Check the National Park Service’s find-a-park website to see if the park is closed or partially closed (restrooms and food services, in particular), for limits on numbers of visitors, and other rules like mask-wearing. There is so much to see in America. As an incredibly diverse nation, people from all over the world immigrate here, providing multicultural experiences from coast to coast. Along back roads and far out farmlands are small towns and attractions that don’t get the attention they deserve.

Small shops, restaurants, and abandoned sites often get passed by because they are seemingly meaningless. But you never know when you could be missing out on the chance to discover a hidden gem among what appears to be a plot of nothingness. With all the different types of landscapes across the country, there really isn’t a bad view. From mountain ranges, to rolling hills, desert cactus to sunny beaches, there is a postcard-worthy view that you’ll want to capture as the backdrop for your next selfies. And lastly, The National Park System encompasses 419 national park sites in the United States. T0 get to one of these is not far from reach, no matter where you live in the U.S. They span across more than 84 million acres in each state. RV travel is quite affordable. With so many people out of work, or reduced pay, RV vacationing can stretch the dollar bill further than you can imagine. Think about how much you typically spend on a vacation. For our family of four, we have to consider airfare, hotel stays, our food budget, our activities budget and then of course all of the little “extras” that we forget about including in that budget that arise like an urgent care visit, that extra souvenir, etc. Your daily rental cost of an RV includes your actual travel cost (minus gas), AND your hotel stay (minus an RV resort or campground fee). Your meals include what you bring with you on the trip (minus an adventure or two of take out at select destinations), and the entertainment can really be a minimal expense, especially when visiting national parks or simply

enjoying the surrounding nature. I bet if you need the math, an RV trip could fit into your budget quite nicely. At the end of the day, we sometimes forget about all of the incredible places that are right in our own backyards. Instead of that little Italian restaurant outside of Tuscany, what about venturing off to an American vineyard for fresh wine? While nothing will replace the pyramids in Egypt, the Grand Canyon, one of the world’s wonders, is within our reach. The part news is that living in the United States, we ultimately have the freedom to get out an explore and get on vacation, and I think we can all agree that this is something we all need right now. This way of vacationing allows for an upgraded life under the stars. You are in control. You are not on someone’s schedule. You create memories that your children will never forget.

RV Apps

Here is an overview of my favorite travel apps. FreeRoam - This app for finding free campsites on public land, as well as a directory of reviews for established campsites. However, it’s greatest power lies in finding new campsites not otherwise documented. Campendium – This app has tens of thousands of places to camp, from swanky RV parks to free remote destinations, vetted by our team of full-time travelers and reviewed by their 275,000 plus members. Hipcamp – This app filters campsites and lodging according to your travel needs, including price, group size, structure type, pet-friendliness, amenities (from toilets to outdoor kitchens), and access to activities such as hiking, fishing, and surfing. Dyrt – This is the ultimate camping app, with over 500,000+ user-submitted locations, reviews and tips across the U.S. The platform is free to use on the web, iOS and Android, with additional functionality available in the paid PRO version August, 2020 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -13-

People to See:

Nev Schulman By Allison Kugel While the world may still be socially distancing, people are online now more than ever looking for connections and answers. The eighth season of MTV’s Catfish: The TV Show will go to the ends of the internet to find them. For the first time ever, Executive Producer and host Nev Schulman and co-host Kamie Crawford work together, remotely, to do what they do best: track down the truth. This season, Nev and Kamie have their work cut out for them as they must play by new rules, encounter new obstacles and dive headfirst into the world’s “new normal” to uncover lies and potentially find true love. Allison Kugel: When the pandemic hit, whose idea was it to take Catfish: The TV Show virtual? Nev Schulman: I don’t know if it was one person’s idea. We know that obviously most of the entertainment industry was going to be shut down. A lot of shows, because they require a studio audience or a lot of people on set, couldn’t resume production. It occurred to us that our show, in many ways, already exists in a digital world. While we do love

the aspect of the show where we travel and meet people, and the whole idea of finally bringing virtual interactions into the real world, that doesn’t change the core function of our show, which is just to get the trace on someone. We all looked at each other and thought, “Is there a version of the show where we can do it from home via Zoom?” We did the first episode and right away we all saw that it does work, and we were super excited.

somebody without ever actually seeing that person? Schulman: I liken it to the banks of a river. I don’t know if you did this exercise in science class as a kid, but riverbanks generally start mostly straight with a smaller stream, if you will. Then, over time slight imperfections in

“I hope the show is having a positive effect on people ” Nev Schulman

Kugel: Although most people are meeting online these days, I can’t imagine that I would be motivated to continue to build a relationship with somebody without ever actually seeing them in person, or at least on video. What causes a person to develop deep feelings for

a relationship. Before you notice, all of a sudden you are months and months into this thing and you’re so far down the river that it’s too late to turn back. I think that’s how it happens, very slowly and you almost don’t even notice it happening. Kugel: Wow, interesting analogy. Where did the term “Catfish” come from? Schulman: We heard a story when we were making the documentary film, Catfish, back in 2008. Our film was a story about a woman who had, in fact, catfished me, the way a fisherman used to use catfish to chase cod around in the tank of these giant fishing boats. In life, there are people who kind of do the same thing, who make everyday kind of interesting and exciting, and kind of just keep us all guessing and on our toes. So, we thought it was a beautiful analogy for Angela, the woman who catfished me, and what an interesting and unexpected name for the film, and subsequently the show. So, it started off as a refer-

ence to that story, but it has now become part of the English language. It’s just so wild. Kugel: Life is crazy! Do you ever sit back and reflect about how your personal experience with heartbreak and being catfished led to your television career and this pop culture phenomenon of sorts? Schulman: I do. I think about it every time I film an episode, because it gives me a lot of satisfaction to know that the experiences that the people are having on the show might just be the thing that changes the direction of their lives for the better. Kugel: What kind of impact do you think Catfish: The TV Show and your MTV platform is having on adolescents and young adults who watch the show and follow you? Schulman: I can only hope and speak to the sort of things people have said to me, directly. I hope the show is having a positive effect on people, both young and old, because the thing

that was most highlighted for me after the documentary, Catfish, in terms of what people said to me was how surprised and relieved and impressed they were in terms of how we handle things. People specifically liked the way we handled the situation with my relationship with Angela, the woman who catfished me. We handled it with so much compassion and understanding. We gave her an opportunity to tell her story, and we took the time to understand, although it’s not an excuse, the reasons and motivation that led to the lies she created. I think the show, if it does nothing else, gives people a much-needed respite from the constant judging and cancelling and teasing and bullying that takes place in everyday life. It shows people that even when someone does something that warrants being scolded or yelled at or cancelled, you can still be compassionate. You can take the time to sit down and engage with them in a mature way, and give them the opportunity to explain themselves. You can, both, learn from them and teach them, and hopefully they can learn from their mistakes .

California beaches, parks, and scenic drives await—all on your own terms. Here’s how to get started on your own RV adventure.

California is home to nine national parks and 280 state parks— as well as thousands of park campsites that range from the nofrills wide-open spaces of Hungry Valley in Los Angeles County to the sumptuous redwood scenery and big campsites of Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Gold Country. The state’s deep inventory of private campgrounds and RV parks further increase your options, many having pools, cafés, and even tennis courts. Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most favorite places to visit. There are big Disney-like boulders to scramble over, hiking trails to explore with incredible vistas, quirky Joshua trees, rock climbing, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and the quiet, it’s ever so quiet there. One day is equivalent to 5 in this magical place! Many who RV their way through California enjoy the “I-5 Challenge,” going north or south on Interstate 5, to or from Oregon. Along the way, you can stop to see the alpine scenery of Mt. Shasta, the olive-oil hub of Corning, the state capitol in Sacramento, and

the beaches of San Diego. Want to create a hike-filled trip? Check out CampCalNow’s 52 Hike Challenge. “The adventure travelers and backpackers go more along the 395 corridor,” Kelley says, referring to a thoroughfare that provides easy access to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Mammoth Lakes, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. “Or maybe you just want to be on the coast all the time—you could create an entire trip out of beaches.”

Dillon Beach Resort, near Tomales Bay: This resort of charming, tiny house–style cabins sits on 55 acres along the Marin-Sonoma County Line and has big views of the Point Reyes Peninsula. You can rent a surfboard, chill on the private beach, and eat at the on-site locavore cafe. Casa de Fruta RV Orchard Resort, Hollister: Located about 15 miles from the garlic-loving town of Gilroy, this 300-space RV park sits on the grounds of the fabulous fruit stand, sweets shop, and 24-hour restaurant Casa de Fruta. Kids will love the on-site playground, miniature train, and carousel.

GROVELAND /PRNewswire/ -- Guests who are looking to enjoy the outdoors with lodging in a Yosemite Area cabin have the choice of many types at Yosemite Pines RV Resort. Some offer full kitchens and bathrooms while others may opt for an adventurous stay in a Conestoga Wagon, basic cabin, or yurt with beds and microwave and mini-fridge. ing, etc. can be found at https:// tinyurl.com/y9j9ultb where a comprehensive Yosemite Pines Activity Guide (pdf) for the Resort and surrounding area can be downloaded. To visit Yosemite National Park, a reserved day pass is required as no passes will be sold at the Park gates. The FAQ’s at www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/covid19.htm have all the information for YNP passes. Two important policies are that although the YNP pass is good for seven days, the pass must be used on the first date. Also, twenty percent of the passes will be held back until two days before the requested date, allowing for some spontaneous travel. The other option for YNP entrance is to purchase a ticket for the Sonora route YARTS. com shuttle that leaves from

Since the shuttles inside YNP will not be operating, travelers should consider bringing their own bikes that can be carried on the YARTS or renting a bike in YNP. Yosemite Pines Resort is implementing COVID–19 policies to keep guests safe. “We are very pleased that so many people are making reservations to enjoy the outdoors with their families, even with the restrictions in place. Lums Pond State Park

BEAR - Lums Pond State Park is nestled in an oak and poplar woodland and surrounds Delaware’s largest freshwater millpond. Before the pond existed, St. Georges Creek flowed through the hardwood forest and was the site of several Native American hunting camps. The creek was dammed in the early 1800’s when the C & D canal was built. Water from the pond was used to fill the locks of the canal and power a small mill. This area was first used as a state park in 1963. From hiking to fishing and biking, there’s plenty of recreation for visitors to enjoy. For horse lovers, the park features more than 10 miles of equestrian trails and is home to the Sunset Stables Equestrian Center, which offers riding lessons. The Go Ape! Zip line Treetop Adventure Course is also onsite, offering two

zipline courses, one for beginners and younger children, and a second course that offers a two- to three-hour adventure high up in the tree canopy. The park features 66 full hookup RV sites. The newly-renovated campground offers sites with three-point hookups (water, electric and sewer), as well as four horse campsites without hookups. If you prefer a bed to a bedroll, stay in one of our yurts! These round stationary structures with canvas walls feature a single and double bed bunked together, a double bed-sized futon, an outdoor seating area, and outdoor deck. 2020 RV Campsite Rates: $25 - $40 per night. T

he long-awaited St. Pete Pier™ and the St. Pete Pier District opened to the public this week. The 26-acre engineering feat is designed to celebrate the city’s historic connection to the waterfront and marks the latest arrival of a gleaming attraction in the city’s picturesque downtown— ringing in a new era for this world-class city. As an entirely new district, this latest iteration of a pier employs the technology and innovative aesthetics of a new generation and newly vibrant city. Redefining the capabilities and features of a modern pier, this entertainment district is an extension of St. Pete’s bustling city center, offering a picturesque urban beach area, a vast, design-forward children’s playground, variety of dining spots, seasonal marketplace with local vendors, tree laden walkways and hidden copses, an ecotourism center and so much more. From children to seniors, nature lovers to art enthusiasts, fishermen to foodies – the St. Pete Pier has something for everyone. “St. Petersburg’s icon has long been our public waterfront, one of the largest in North America. The new pier is an extension of our icon and is sure to draw both residents and visitors from all over the world” said Mayor Rick Kriseman, City of St. Petersburg. “Further, it is truly a pier for all people, with so much to enjoy regardless of income. It is a gift to our residents and future generations.”

The Brand New

From its earliest days in the late 1800s, St. Petersburg and its pier have been intricately linked. There have been many iterations of a pier over the years. In the last decade, St. Pete has become one of the hottest cultural, artistic, culinary and environmentally conscious destinations in the world, and it is getting a new Pier to match. St. Petersburg has become one of the most recognized cultural hubs in the Southeast.

And downtown St. Pete is its epicenter. Featuring museums devoted to artistic legends like Dalí and Chihuly and street after street adorned by colorful murals both large and small, it is easy to see why “Art Shines Here.” The St. Pete Pier and Pier District will be no exception. Not only is the pier itself a work of art, but it hosts installations from four internationally renowned artists: Janet Echelman, Xenobia Bailey, Nick Ervinck

and Nathan Mabry. Art installation images here. The pier represents a significant civic investment by the City of St. Petersburg in the city’s bright future. The latest pier is the result of close collaboration between several internationally renowned and local designers. Under the guidance of the City of St. Petersburg and Mayor Rick Kriseman, the design team led by Rogers Partners, ASD|SKY, and Ken Smith Workshop collaborated

with builder SKANSKA and pier management to accomplish the vision for a new and revitalized waterfront experience. It is the City of St. Petersburg’s goal to provide a safe and entertaining exPIERience for all individuals. The Center for Disease Control and the City of St. Petersburg recommend wearing a mask or cloth face covering when social distancing is not possible. We encourage visitors to the pier to wear a mask whether indoors

or outdoors; however, local directives require masks to be worn when inside places of public assembly, such as restaurants. This will be enforced within the St. Pete Pier District. The Southeast’s largest waterfront entertainment district, the St. Pete Pier, comprises 26 acres of activated space in St. Petersburg, Florida’s vibrant downtown. Redefining the definition of a pier, the district is an extension of St. Pete’s bustling city center. Each day, visitors will be able to enjoy countless experiences, from pop-up performances to inspiring public art installations. In addition, The Pier will host major events throughout the year, including concerts, markets, and more. www.stpetepier.org. You can make reservations nearby at Fort De Soto Campground in Tierra Verde. It is a 238-site family camping area with facilities including picnic tables, grills, water and electricity. Their huge lawn features 24 RV campsites with 30- or 50- amp hookups. Guests can enjoy several activities – including fishing, boating, volleyball and crabbing – and nearby attractions such as Down the Bayou Shrimp Tours, water activities on Lake Boudreaux, and authentic Cajun restaurants like CeAna’s Cajun Cookin’. 2020 RV Campsite Rates: $30 per night; $125 per week; $300 per month. Owner Joey Verdin was born and raised in South Louisiana. He grew up in a commercial fish-

ing community where he hoped to follow in his dad’s foot steps and become a commercial fisherman. Due to cheaper foreign shrimp imports, this dream disappeared and a career in the Oil and Gas Industry followed. “Although the Oil and Gas industry was good to me and my family, I always had the ambition of owning my own business,” said Joey. “This opportunity came when Swampman RV Paradise came up for sale.” He purchased the RV park in 2015 when it was mostly permanent rentals. Currently, this park hosts 24 sites with the experience being just as memorable as the larger RV parks. It has been known for it’s “Louisiana Experience.” “I had one visitor tell me I

was treating him like Royalty,” he said, laughing. “But that’s something I love to do. We treat our visitors to crawfish, crab and shrimp boils. Fried fish, shrimp, frog legs, alligator... You name it and we cook it.” Locally caught, shrimp trips/ fishing trips and boat rides are offered. Since 2015, landscaping has been upgraded, a fishing pier was built, and a fence around the park was added. This fall their first cabin should be available to rent. Another goal is a play set for the smaller kids. Open 24 hours, for more information call 985-860-8198 or visit www.swampmanrvparadisellc. business.site/

Things to Do:

Relax w/Adventure

Relaxation, adventure, escape, and quality time with family and friends are among the many reasons why camping is a beloved Minnesota pastime. Whether you’re ready to take on the Boundary Waters or prefer the comforts of an RV, a Minnesota camping trip will surely be one to remember.

Camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a badge of honor. There are no roads, buildings, motorboats, and definitely no cell phone service. The only mode of transportation is via canoe, with more than 1,500 miles of waterways to explore. When it’s time to set up camp, simply paddle to an open campsite and pitch your tent. Every campsite is private, so you’ll have a little piece of the wilderness all to yourselves. Adjacent to the Boundary Waters, the Superior National Forest has a wide range of camping op-

tions, from primitive “dispersed camping” sites up to drive-in sites complete with bathhouses and electric hookups. Also in this picturesque part of the state, the Superior Hiking Trail covers nearly 300 miles of rugged terrain above the North Shore of Lake Superior, with more than 90 campsites along the way. If you’re looking for a more laid back and family-friendly camping experience, Minnesota has about 500 privately operated campgrounds, most of which are on a lake or river, with sites for RVs as well as tents. Many are at resorts that also rent cabins and other indoor lodging. Many of Minnesota’s most scenic spots are in state parks, and most have campgrounds with tent and RV sites. The settings range from forest to prairie; scenic hiking trails and access to a lake or river are among the highlights at these popular parks. For more camping details, see www.exploreminnesota.com.

Things to Do

Go Primitive For an extended weekend getaway, cruising the Blue Ridge Parkway is a great way to begin a camping trip. Start your adventure in Asheville, cultural, culinary and craftbeer hub of the Western mountain region. This region also boasts Pisgah National Forest, home to Mount Mitchell, the state’s tallest peak. Rising over 6,600 feet above sea level, it is the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. Drive to the top for 360-degree views and plentiful picnic tables. Next on the agenda is a backpack trip through the Great Smoky Mountains, where you can pick up 71 miles of the Appalachian Trail. This national park’s ridge of forestland winds along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, offering over 800 miles of hiking trails. Backcountry camping is available at about 100 designated camp sites and is also allowed in the immediate vicinity of most of the 250 shelters along the Trail. Head to the central Piedmont region where you’ll find the state’s largest cities, including Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham. This area is best enjoyed from Hanging Rock State Park. Climb the 2+ miles of sheer rock face or fish and boat on the lake. Hanging Rock State Park has 73 single-family campsites located on a forested ridge in the beautiful Sauratown Mountains. Campsites are suitable for tents, trailers and RVs. There’s also 10 cabins and 5 group sites available. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers -58- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2020

and laundry sinks. Make your way east, where Carolina Beach State Park and the Outer Banks beckon. The Tar Heel State’s 300 miles of barrier-island beaches offer charming coastal towns and soft dunes perfect for pitching your tent. Primitive beach camping is especially rewarding at Cape Lookout National Seashore where the lighthouse and wild horses create once-in-a-lifetime photo options. All camping within the park is primitive beach camping: there are no designated campgrounds. Permits are not generally required for camping, but to minimize the spread of COVID-19, the beaches are closed to groups of more than 10. So let’s go hiking, swimming, surfing, fishing, clamming, crabbing and sit around evening campfires. These are the things that memories are made of.

Loudon County

Now is the time to plan a getaway on roads less traveled. Known for million-dollar views of the Great Smoky Mountains, wide, meandering rivers and sparkling lakes, Loudon County is located between Knoxville and Chattanooga with convenient access from I-75 and I-40 East. In Lenoir City, Highway 321 is the most scenic and least congested route to the Smokies, but the secret sweet spot is here, away from the crowds in the ultimate mountain lake retreat. Relaxation includes picturesque drives, stunning sunsets and trademark misty mornings on the water. Ten-

nessee Valley Authority reservoirs create a lake and river highway with many recreational choices: swimming or skiing; motor or sailboating; fishing or floating, paddling or pontooning. Four key lakes including Fort Loudoun Lake make for some of the best fishing in the state. Hydroelectric dams create differing water temperatures that support 51 species of fish from bass to stripers. Waterside hiking is vast and varied; on Tellico Lake the East Lakeshore Trail system of nine trails are designated as a National Recreational Trail. A Civil War walking/driving

trail shows how men fought “brother against” brother in a deeply divided state. Loudon’s downtown charm and authentic attractions give visitors plenty more options for engaging entertainment. Loudon and Lenoir City offer antiquing and walking tours amid architecture from the early 1800s to the late 20th century. Sweetwater Valley Farm crafts 10 varieties of award-winning cheeses, and visitors can sample and see the process. www.VisitLoudonCounty.com. For more on Tennessee
